Impeccable service, good tacos, great atmosphere* This was my first time at Los Altos, and the restaurant itself is really cozy, one of the best designed taquerias in SW. Great lighting (and light fixtures), big plush booths, sentimental and tuba-driven norteño music at a low volume. The * is a qualifier. While the interior was great, throughout my meal there was the loud and erratic sound of a power buzz saw from somewhere out of sight. Construction? Beef carcass dissection? Not sure, but it was a small nuisance. Also, just before we finished the meal, the restaurant FILLED with the mighty smell of dried shrimp. It came in a thick wave, increased in intensity, sat around for 10 minutes, then disappeared as quickly as it arrived. It was so strong, me and my partner laughed out loud about it. Not at all pleasant. (were they making dry-shrimp cakes in the back? I was REALLY hoping the smell was not related to the buzz saw noise!) The menu has an impressive and diverse range of dishes, but i particularly noted the long taco list (!) and the separate seafood section, for the fish-eating vegetarians out there. I made a bit of a cavalier decision over the menu, since I thought I'd also dive into unexplored food terrain - which is risky if you're going to review a restaurant you've not been to before, because, you need to be able to distinguish between your thoughts on the unfamiliar dishes from the restaurant itself, to some degree. There's no basis of comparison, for instance, whether you don't like something ever or you don't like the way it's been served on that occasion. Well, I ordered with a blind double-header: menudo (tripe and chili soup) and tacos de buche (which can be either fried pig's cheek or fried pig's esophagus - being my first experience, i couldn't decipher, but i'm guessing cheek). I thought the tacos were exciting without being a new favorite. There's kind of a double texture to this taco, as each piece of meat has two halves, an almost crispy outer layer which covers over a much more silky layer of pork fat. I liked the texture very much, and it had great rich flavor, but was a bit too salty, something akin to bacon. The menudo, which I'd also not had before, didn't make a fan out of me. I was actually surprised at how much I did not like this dish. The soup is a deep and attractive red color, however, and what I could make of the chili flavor was probably the best part. If you're a fan of tripe, this bowl was loaded with it, and the texture was pleasantly surprising. I feared tripe would be rubbery, but actually it was more like the consistency of seared scallops. The taco dinner came with FOUR tacos in wonderful corn tortillas, so it was filling and satisfying. Very cheap too. Horchata was ok. The chips & salsa were good and plentiful. Did I mention the service? Yes I did, because it was super attentive! Best service so far this year. Thanks! I'll be trying this place again soon, in hopes of a less surprising round of tastes and atmospheric conditions.

I went again for a Saturday lunch with my teenage daughter. The waitress came to the table speaking only Spanish, until she realized that we were an Anglo and an Asian/Anglo fusion, and then she switched to English. I get the impression that few Anglos come here outside of the weekday lunch. I had the Chicken Chile Relleno and my daughter had the Burrito Gigante. They were totally delicious and huge. $12. Repeat $12. This may be the best value in Detroit. Get here folks.

Now this is authentic cuisine! We went for lunch on Sunday. There was ample parking and the staff was incredibility helpful. They had a huge variety on the menu. As soon as you arrive they bring out this giant tray of different types of salsa's and guacamole with chips to munch on. The food arrives within 5 minutes of ordering, the waitresses tag team and just bring it out as the food was done. I enjoyed the tacos ($1-1.5) and beans/rice. I stuck with the whole beans due to the yelp review and did not regret, I enjoyed the bacon and spices added to it. Additionally I got the Sopapillas for dessert--super good. It was cut into crispy chips with a little bit of whip cream on top. Please note just ask for the bill they don't usually just drop it off. Surprisingly this delicious meal was less then $10/person!!! It was worth the trip and I am so glad I finally made it down there:)

We went to Los Altos as a preliminary to our mini bar crawl. I had heard great things, and wasn't disappointed. I had the botana (sin chorizo) and it was tasty. I also appreciated the the chips and salsa platter included so many different salsas and also RADISHES! My friends enjoyed their tamales, enchiladas, and tacos. I personally prefer El Rancho and Mi Pueblo, but Los Altos is tasty, and much cheaper. Note: there is no alcohol. Only juice drinks.

Great down to earth food. Excellent bbq items. Great egg dishes as well (nopales, chorizo, ...) I like a lot of the detroit places - lupita, mi puebla; but come here the most. (The taco trucks across from mi puebla are outstanding as well.)

I'm not a foodie, I just know what I like. I like being the only gringo in a restaurant. I like the waitstaff telling me my Spanish is cute and improving. I like getting a ton of great food for two people for under $20. This place is perfect if you just want great food with no pretense. I am a big fan of their $1 tacos, fresh pico de gallo, fresh radishes and tamarind Jarritos. The fact that it is authentic helps too. My advise. Bring cash, nothing else is accepted. Come in clean, several Detroit officers eat hear regularly. Avoid desert. You'll be too full and it sucks anyway!

Wow! Thank you fellow yelpers! This is an excellent find! My husband and I went there today with a couple of friends, and we were all very pleased. The food reminded me of the food we ate on our honeymoon in Mexico. I ordered chicken flautas with rice and beans ($6). The flautas were served with sour cream and guac - they were very good. What really turned my head, however, was the rice. I am so sick of the bland rice that is typically served in Mexican restaurants - this was very flavorful. I would go back just for the rice! The chips and several dips were excellent - although they could have had a hotter sauce option in the mix. Top quality Mexican food on the cheap. I really felt like I was back in Mexico - give or take 40 degrees outside.

5 STARS?!?!???!???!???? Without a doubt, this is the best mexican taqueria in the Detroit area. Unlike Middle Eastern Food, great Mexican food is tough to get here. But this place is just like eating in the Mission. Not only is the food delicious- it is also served to you by women that speak no english (oh yeah, and it's cheap). Now, the place is a bit run down, and very hard to get to, and the person serving you probably speaks no english, but this delecable gem is definitely worth the trip. This trip is not for the faint of heart. This is no Xochimilco located right off the highway (which I liken to ChiChis). This takes a bit of a drive. This takes some work to get to. This is what makes it even more worth it. It is an adventure. You can order unique dishes such as Coctel de Camarones and Lengua and an entire fish and they even serve you four dishes of salsa with your chips. You can also get Jarritos and Horchata. If you are not of hispanic origin, you will be the only person that is not Hispanic in the entire restaurant. The waitstaff is exceptionally friendly and the ambiance is very unique. Enjoy the Mexican Music and use the bathroom before you get there. The bathroom is tiny and run down.

This place is amazing! If you're in to the glorified Taco Bell (Los Galanos, Mexican Gardens) feel with cheese on your tacos instead of pico de gallo and freshly squeezed lime you are MISSING OUT! Oh, please try the carnitas with corn tortillas instead of flour. The waitresses do not speak english but usually they are pretty cute girls so it definitely makes ordering easier. The menus have brief descriptions in english so just point to what you want! I also like the fact that if you order soda they give you a can and a plastic cup with ice. For some reason little things like that make me realize that the spot is the real deal. If you're coming from the serious burbs they have their own private gated lot so thats a plus... me, I park in the street. HAHA Hands down this place and food are authentic as it gets...ENJOY!

Fantastic! Couldn't believe how cheap the food was at this neighborhood joint! The tacos were amazing but the trio fajaitas stole the show!

A friend and I are on a mission to try every Mexican restaurant in Mexican Town (M-Town) for a) tacos and b) queso flamado (if they have it), and thanks to some lovely yelpers, I discovered Los Altos on the outskirts of the area we know as M-Town. I'd say it's a couple of miles outside the main drag, but for $1 tacos and because it's owned by the same people that own Lupitas (one of my all time faves, Mexican or otherwise), we made an exception. We didn't do Queso Flamado here because it's terrible at Lupitas and we figured this place would be no different, so we stuck with our traditional Al Pastor tacos (excellent!) and ventured into Chile Rellanos territory. I thought it was excellent and spicy, but I immediately wanted to put cheese all over it. You get the same incredible chips and salsa tray as you get at Lupitas and the restaurant itself is much bigger, but cozier due to better lighting and decor. The biggest difference to most people, I'm guessing, is the availability of alcohol, which is not available at Lupitas. I'm only giving it 3 stars because the service was terrible, which is unacceptable when you are one of 3 tables actually eating. I never got the fork I asked for, the water was served at room temperature (6 melted ice cubes in our first glasses and zero in our second) and, after waiting for at least 15 minutes for our bill, they overcharged us by over $5!!! Obviously, that problem was remedied when we questioned the bill at the cashier counter, but still. Did they think we wouldn't notice? I'm sticking with Lupitas.

Yum, yum, yum!!! Thank you from the bottom of my big Texas heart, fellow Yelpers!!! The Mexican food here was great. The pastor was tender and juicy, the salsa was fresh (though not very spicy) and all on the cheap! the hubs and I left with happy full bellys. Worth the drive for great food, we'll be back.

Wow, this place is a gem. We loved this restaurant. Very authentic food, our first waitress couldn't make out what were saying in English, so they got us another waitress. Everyone was very friendly though! We got Chile Relleno, it was really good, nice and crisp. I got the tacos. The Al Pastor was AWESOME! So, flavorful. When they first come to your table they bring you this awesome relish tray for your chips and entrees. It comes with great salsa, pico, and guac. We got a lot of food for a great price. We will definitely be eating there again!

This place is a must! Be prepared to speak spanish too! I've been there twice now and both times the server didn't speak english. They immediately realized they couldn't understand my broken spanish, so they called over someone else who spoke english pretty well. Los Altos is off the beaten path of Mexican town and it's completely worth it. You get authentic mexican and find some things on the menu you'll never see elsewhere. Both times the dishes were outstanding. I recommend trying the corn tortilla tacos, particularly the Lomo. It is marinated pulled pork, a delicious treat. The second dish I had was something I've never seen on the menu at other places, nopales (cactus leaf). If you've never tried it, you should order it the next time you're there. Very different. The entrees are super cheap too.

YUCK! We wanted to try this place based on the great reviews. The avacado stuff with the chips and salsa was horrid. Our glasses were dirty. The dishes we wanted to order from the menu, they didn't even have. We will be going back to our favorite spot in Mexicantown after this experience.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
