This cafe' is located in the basement of the International Institute across the street from the DIA and CCS. They are very reasonably priced with good food. The presentation is simple, as an inexpensive student/local cafe' will be. The curry chicken I ordered was yum, though I had to dodge various sticks and twigs of fresh herbs and accidentally bit into a large black cardamom seed which was... not so yum. The Mango Lassi beverage I ordered was a treat and gone way too soon. Very nice lunch spot, just watch out for the twigs and seeds. =)

I ordered the chicken curry. It was very tasty and totally worth the price. The service was very quick, too, everyone was super nice. The environment was a little uncomfortable, especially if the eating area is mostly empty. It was pretty quiet and I didn't want to stay there for too long.

The food is pretty decent. I had a falafel sandwich, which was pretty tasty. The service is friendly enough, though they can be a bit slow even when there is no one in there. The ambiance is terrible, as it's just a bunch of cheap chairs and tables in a basement. The menu is pretty varied, so there's something for everyone here. Prices are low, so you can easily eat lunch for under $10 here.

This is a great Wayne State/ midtown secret. You'll NEVER find this place without someone pointing it out to you. It's in the basement of the International Institute, down Kirby (a side street off Woodward) across from the DIA on the north side. The food is a relatively wide spread of "international" dishes that makes multiple visits rewarding. The service is fast and super friendly. Just don't go in with any illusions. It's like a really good quick-version of different strains of Indian/Asian cuisine. Tasty as hell when you're looking to chow down 'round lunch time between classes or work - but absolutely NOT fine-dining by any stretch. Everything on the menu is a solid B. (The only thing I'd caution against is the mango lassi... it's composition is inconsistent, so I've learned not to trust it - ie. sometimes too sweet, sometimes too yogurty, sometimes the flavor is a little off). Just stick with water or their fresh brewed coffee which is quite good.

Sometimes I lament the loss of the international restaurant that used to fill this space, but the current incarnation is decent on its own. I dock it a star because sometimes the food quality isn't up to par, but in general they have a pretty impressive selection of international foods, their prices are very reasonable and their service is quick and friendly. Great lunch spot in the Medical Center / Wayne State area.

A colleague of mine recommended this place, so I agreed to buy him a birthday lunch if he drove (it's really close to work though). Cute place, food is decently priced. I ordered the vegetable curry, despite the fact I have rarely had curry. It was really good, and there is more than enough food for at least two meals. I have to admit that I was also excited that they sold CANS of Pepsi. Will definitely be back for lunch. The main reason I'm giving three stars is because the restaurant was out of lamb as well as something else my colleague wanted. He settled for curry chicken and a samosa, which he did enjoy.

I'm going out on a limb here, since I haven't been back in 3 years- but I really miss it. While I was going to school, I'd frequent this place for lunch. It was great for getting affordable and quick and pretty darn delicious curry for lunch. You get a great amount of food for the value, perfect for a student's budget. Nothing like lunch and dinner for the price of lunch. I always would get the Mango Lassi to accompany one of the various curry selections- I usually would go veggie. I really love their potato curry with peas and nice big chunks of curry potatoes, it's delicious and they pair it with rice- of course- as well as a little refreshing salad on the side. The atmosphere is nothing mind blowing. It's incredibly small and you'll usually see some DIA employees there along with random worldly artwork adorning the walls, but the food is tasty and fresh. It has a great vibe, friendly staff that really give the feeling like they're taking care of you, not just serving you.

Great little find with wonderful food. This spot gives you the feeling and tastes of having a home cooked meal from various spots around the world. I would suggest the Indian cuisine, it's my favorite. I had a three bean curry that was just delicious. Sitting over basmati rice the beans were flavored with just a hit of curry that didn't over power. Go in on a Wednesday and they have a $5 dollar special.

Oh boy do I miss this place. I'd frequent here about once a week in between my grueling class schedule. It was a nice escape. Located in the basement of the International Institute, this place is quite the hidden gem. Don't expect to be impressed when you first enter the restaurant...but expect to be impressed when you receive the food. I'd suggest the vegetable curry (DEEEELICIOUS) and also the samosas they have for $1!

This is a wonderful family-run business in Midtown, adjacent to the DIA and College for Creative Studies. As other reviewers have mentioned, the curry dishes are the best I've found in Detroit city limits. The Mid East Feast is also fantastic and the pizzas are very good. To be honest, I have eaten some things here that were not so great (i.e. chicken soup out of a can) but if you know what to order, this is a delicious, fast and chill go-to spot in Midtown. I love the people who work here - they are so kind and friendly. That goes far with me. Note, they are only open 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m on weekdays.

Two words: CHICKEN CURRY I could tell you all a really long story about food and how good this dish tastes (only thing I've even bothered trying here) and blah blah blah but instead I'll just tell you that when I was 17, I skipped school one day to go eat here (not open (or wasn't) on weekends) and I decided to go "give my compliments to the chef." When I get back there, I'm like "hey man this food is really good how do you do it?" Instead of answering my question he looks at me and he's like "you look arabic, are you lebanese?" I say yes and he asks me what my last name is... dude claims that he is from the same village as my Lebanese ancestors and then proceeds to tell me more about my family's village than anything related to food. So killer. Dude would give me some free samosas to go every time I came in after that. I didn't go back for some reason for a couple years. Got the chicken curry again recently and it's still just as tasty except I think it's a dollar more now. Wasn't this place called SMALL WORLD CAFE? Way better name. I remember, the first time I went, the chicken curry was definitely 5 bucks. Then I think they changed owners or something and now i think it's like 7.99 or something. Total WTF man. Heard the old owner got seriously screwed on the deal too. GREAT use of cilantro, tomato and onion. This is where people who work in midtown go to lunch. You should try it though. I'm only giving it 3 stars because of it's weird history. The chicken curry is a 5 star dish and is pretty much the only reason to go to this place. HARSH.

This a a tucked away spot right by College for Creative Studies and the DIA. It's a quiet, relaxed space. A good place to come for lunch if you're wanting to read that book you can't put down while you eat. I have only eaten the Indian based dishes, so I can't speak for the other offerings. The menu is fairly large and if you don't like curry I'm sure you'll find something else to full you're belly. I will say though, it seems that the Indian/Asian dishes are their best, so perhaps keep that in mind if you're visiting the International Mini Cafe. I love the three bean curry! With fall in the air (kind of) I find myself wanting hot, comforting foods and this fits the bill. I ask them to make it spicy because I think they leave off some of the hotness for patrons who prefer a milder experience. Very flavorful and filling. This is my little happy place for lunch during a crazy day. Try it!

Great little hidden gem in the Wayne state area off of Woodward, don't drive down the street expecting a business front. This little cafe is located in the basement of the international institute. I'm only basing my review on the Indian dishes because that's all I've had here. If your looking for authentic Indian dishes this is your place ! Fresh food, friendly service......what else can you ask for ? My only complaint is that they close kinda early around 2:30pm
