This place has more of a homey feel, is small and not high-end like other Greek restaurants in Greektown, and the menu is small, typed up and laminated. But the Gyro meat is out of this world! I've never had better fillings and meat in a Gyro. They also do have a full bar, you just have to ask for what you want. I dock one star because the pita bread is very dry and stiff (but NOT stale), it breaks when folded and wrapped around the fillings.

I met a friend here for dinner after work. The wait staff are very nice and made the experience pleasant. Unfortunately the food was not good at all. It wasent fresh and my stomach didn't agree with the four bites of food before I gave up attempts to eat any more. The place is in need of a food thermometer, bucket of soapy water and good scrub down. The location is great, near a like themed casino and the staff are nice but I'll have to pass on any more invites to eat or drink at this restaurant.

I've been coming here for 30 years. It's dirty (yes, I saw a mouse run across the floor) and small but the best gyro I've ever had. They are not as generous as they once were but it's still worth the try. Give the octopus a try, very good. So if you are in Greektown and have a hankering for good food with a 3rd world feel, The Golden Fleece is for you

35 year's eating there. I Don't bother with the menu, go for the gyro and some flaming cheese. Always good, always consistent. In and out, your food usually within 10 minutes or less. Drawback it's tight, so if you want to eat in a hurry and don't mind rubbing elbows with others this is the place.

This is the only "original" Greek restaurant in Greektown. It is reflected in the excellent food quality, but also in the fact the interior looks run-down and dumpy. I continuously come back to this restaurant because of the Gyros. Unlike many lower end Greek restaurants where the gyro meat is pre-packaged then fried up upon request, the Golden Fleece has large skewers of meat that are roasted all day. This allows for the fat of the meat to melt into the muscle, which results in a fuller flavor. When you order a gyro, they slice the meat fresh and warm off the spit, and serve it with pita, tzatiki, raw onions, and tomatoes. The hot sauce at the table is a must-have on the gyro. Service here is usually pretty bad. My pop was flat (basically sugar water), and the waitress took it back offering to change the tank and bring me a new one. When I asked her about it 10 minutes later, she said she was "too busy and didn't have time". At least she comped it though. If you're just coming here to eat, be sure to park in the casino garage parking structure. It's free, well-lit, and safe. Also only a short 5 minute walk down the street. I give Golden Fleece 3.5/5, good food, but the services and atmosphere does not reflect the price.

I'm only knocking it down a star because it gets so hot in here. The gyro sandwich is my go to. Good bread, meat, sauce and fresh onion and tomatoes. It's also massive. The only downside is how messy it is. They just opened up a new outside seating which looks pretty awesome as well. Cheaply priced. If you are looking for a good gyro definitely check this place out.

I grew up on Mediterranean food and am rather picky about it. I absolutely loved this place. Cute, small, been here since 1971, long-time staff, authentic, delicious food. A must eat if you're in Detroit!!

This used to be a favorite as a kid. Recently ordered Gyros. I must admit eat-in may be bettr than carryout. Solid but not as great as I remember. I must admit the meat, tziki, and pitas are much better at Little Daddy's.

I discovered The Golden Fleece in 1978 as a student at Cass Tech. The food was excellent! Delicious ground lamb, huge basket of fries and big chunks of tomato and onion. I have probably eaten here 40-50 times in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Around 2000, I noticed that the quality dropped from 4 stars to 1. The gyro meat tasted old, gamey, and bad. The portion size dropped from gigantic to enough for one person. It was always divey, run down, and a little dusty, but we high-schoolers didn't care, it was delicious food on the cheap. I have been back 2 times since 2000, just to see if they got their groove or mojo back, but the lamb still tasted like cheap, inferior quality, old meat. I switched to Pegasus and New Parthenon for my gyro fix but they are just passable. I even tried to eat Olga's gyros, but they are a bad joke on the Greek Gods.

Forget all the hype preppy places in Greek Town. The Golden Fleece has the best gyro on Monroe. A bit divy but good food. The Gyro w rice plate 9.95 will satisfy your appetite. Also the shish kabob is done in true Greek Fashion. Highly recommend.

I used to eat here three days a week in law school, and I started frequenting Exodus before it was a legitimate club. I graduated law school in 2009, and I have to say the quality at both establishments (here and Exodus, the club upstairs) has fallen dramatically. On the positive side, they FINALLY updated the interior a bit, got rid of that hideous hanging trellis, and the fake plastic, nasty, dusty greasy grapes. That said, I'd take the nasty decor if they would bring back the old food. Things have changed in terms of food quality, and it's not a welcome change. The red sauce for their rice seems watered down now, their tziki sauce lacks flavor, and worse than that, their meat... Well, their soulvaki is not lamb, like they advertise. It is definitely pork. What bothered me most was, I asked for mine medium rare. Their food was always great, but occasionally you would get a dry shish that had been sitting around, so I always custom order mine cooked medium or medium rare. Instead of explaining to me that they no longer serve lamb, they just brought me pork shish kabob cooked medium (undercooked for pork, for sure) instead. I had many long dates with the toilet the following day. Another sad fate for a once great restaurant that will soon be resting on former glories as business dwindles, or a destination for uneducated patrons that flock here for mediocre fare. Sad. Makes me wonder if Yonne's Dad knows of the changes, or it's all coming from lower down the line. Looks like Rub Hub, and 5 Guys are my new go-to Greek Town food destinations. I'm not happy about that. How about they bring some of those great Cork Town restaurants to Greek town? Quality food in Greek Town is severely lacking.

This has taken over as my favorite Greektown restaurant. There food is always cooked to perfection and the portions are large. There is nothing fancy about the restaurants decor at all, which puts some people off when comparing it to other Greektown restaurants. For me it's about the food. The grill is up front and is the first thing that you see when you walk in. One plus that I put into my opinion of this place is the combinations. They are great and huge. Almost forgot, they have a nice beer selection and to me it seems like they have more Greek beer than anywhere else on the strip.

The Gyros were nothing special. The octopus salad was bad. The octopus wasn't tender, it was too soft. Kinda like when meat been left in acid too long.

I hate to,write bad reviews but we have a bad experience. I choose Golden Fleece because back in the late 1980's it was the go to place for great Greek Food. I loved the fresh marinated octopus. I made reservations for a group of 32 at lunchtime on a weekday in June 2015. The reservation was made about 1 month in advance and confirmed the day before. When we arrived, the waitstaff had just learned about our reservation. The servers were polite and kind, but not prepared for a large party. The octopus on my salad was either over marinated to the point of crumbling apart or it was canned. The Saganaki was rubbery and was not melted. A very disappointing experience.

We have been going to Greektown for 20 years. This was our first visit to Golden Fleece. The food was horrible. Our group was all concerned once we ordered and the waiter said "don't order the green beans, my last customer ordered them and left and said they were never coming back" The salads were full of wilted lettuce, the roasted potatoes were uncooked and tasted horrible. The lamb shank was solid fat and the rice tasted like cardboard with lemon squeezed on it. We asked to speak to the manager, a large man with a dark beard, who incidentally never stopped to speak with anyone having dinner the entire time we were there, the waiter said he was unavailable and the chef was gone for the evening? who is cooking the food...the microwave? As we left the restaraunt we saw the manager sitting at the bar next door texting on his phone. Bottom line: in any other city this place would be bankrupt. Horrible food - horrible service - too many other restaurants to go to - don't waste your money at this place - it ruined our evening. obviously the ownership couldn't care less.

We wandered in here, hungry after a Tigers game. We were seated, ordered, and had food within ten minutes. We both had gyros, and they were delicious! They come deconstructed which threw us off for a minute, but you can assemble yours just the way you like it. The onions had a nice kick and the pita just a touch crispy. I had fries, which were amazing. Hot, crisp, and no grease! Boyfriend had rice- yum. What a treasure and the bonus is they're open late.

It's old dingy and overcrowded. With that said, it's one of the few old school Greek places left in Detroit's lovely "Greek town" and it's pretty awesome Solid 5 stars on service. These folks never screw around. Anyone available to help will offer. On my last visit, I was asked 3 times while sitting if I'd been helped. I've had to have been here over 100 times, starting when I was just starting to go to St. Andrews for concerts as a teen. I've had 3 things from the menu over the course of my visits: Gyro with rice and sauce Chicken Gyro with rice and sauce Greek Salad Other things look really good as they head to customer, but why mess around when these things are so good and so fast to get. The same guy has been slicing down juicy pieces of meat for as long as I remember. He's friendly and wants to make sure you get your food fast. They must go through pounds and pounds of onions and tomatoes in a week because they are always fresh. It might be worth ordering a second piece of bread because there is so much meat and toppings that 2 nice size Gyros could be built from one order.

  • Grace K.

The best gyro I've ever had in My Life! The meat was oh-so-very juicy and tender and full of flavor, and I was relieved to see it wasn't too thinly sliced. It was a pretty sizeable gyro packed with plenty of lamb. Thinking about it induces a pavlovian response where my mouth starts to water. I want to get a lamb gyro here every time I am in Detroit. It's a cute little establishment that's not the most trendy looking, but it's got history and I promise the lamb will be worth the visit.

We were out with some friends on a Saturday evening, and I had my eye on this place since forever. Though I might have been going out on a limb by trying this dive for the first time on a Saturday night, I took a chance anyway. I walked in and just went to the counter. My only intent this visit was to try their lamb gyro sandwich. I didn't even bother grabbing a menu; I was determined to try this, since I love all things related to lamb. There was a couple in front of me paying their bill. The nice young gentleman asked me what I wanted, so I told him simply, "lamb please." He nodded and the older gentleman next to him proceeded to slice the juicy meat off the spit. I was so excited! Shortly after that, the sweet young lady at the cash register processed payment, and the total came out to be $7.25. Holy moly, for the size, it is a bargain; enough for both Husband and myself. I walked out with my to-go box and plastic bag in hand, and tried a small piece of the meat. Juicy, tender, well seasoned, and the perfect thickness. It was a little greasier than what I'm accustomed to, but it was still so good. One of our friends sampled a piece, and we all agreed in unison that this was some delicious meat. We couldn't wait to dig in more, but it would have to wait. The next day, we tried it after heating it briefly, and I have to say that it was just as good if not better as the previous evening. I agree with the rest of the Yelpers in that there is enough meat to make two sandwiches out of it. Next time I'll have to ask for an additional piece of bread. I am not in this area that frequently, but next time I am here, I will definitely spread my wings and try some of their other dishes. But man, that lamb meat...mmmm...I'm not sure if I can pass on that. The taste of it still lingers in my mind. :)

ON POINT! Gyro plate is a consistent winner. Nice crispy and generous pieces of beef, onion and tomato. Tasty rice with fresh tomato sauce and some greens. A fresh, fantastic and well balanced plate.

Learning the hard way the best Greek food is no longer in Greektown. It's really sad how the quality has gone down. It's not just here we tried the Parthenon last time and were disssapointed. But I think it was at least a bit better there (but more $). The worst part is we have been scared away from trying other Greektown restaurants because of two disappointments. If you just want an old Greektown restaurant experience and aren't used to great Greek food somewhere else go ahead and enjoy it here. The atmosphere is good.

I go to the Golden Fleece all the time. The food is unbelievable. I always get the gyro and shish kebab, start off with a saganaki. All the appetizer dips are outstanding. The service is always friendly and fast. When in Greektown, this is my spot!

  • John K.

I am floored people still go to Greektown as a tourist destination. I don't understand that noise at all. At any rate, have no idea what authentic Greek food is, never been to Greece and I couldn't give less of a shit. I am all about those Gyros though, Holmes....and those tasty fries. That is all I have ever grubbed on here and I dig this place. I like it very much when I am sloshed after a good show at St. Andrew's or a Wings game. I REALLY love it when I am "Batman" drunk** because the layout and the tables are such that if you are wobblin a bit you can always grab your small round table and somewhat eeease yourself back into your seat after you peed all over the floor of the bathroom. (don't judge, smells like everyone does that) Bonus if you haven't already been "over-served", they sell booze. Hot sauce is made in house which tends to be sketchy at times, this stuff is legit but it will stain anything you wear if you are a sloppy fool. (guilty!) Divey, open late, always good service, great value. **"Batman drunk" is when you are lifting your skirt over your head for anything other than sex. One more thought, it should be perfectly legal for one to round house another in the back of the neck / stab one in the face if said person pronounces Gyro by saying "Guy-Row"...just sayin.

Oh, Greek Town, how I miss thee. I'm out in AZ and we have nothing that can even compete, not even close. Your chicken gyros were huge and wonderful. So huge you probably can't eat the entire thing. They are generous with the sageki, which I appreciate. I miss the Fleece's old school feel of the place, no frills, just great Greek food. Grab a friend so you can down some fried artichokes served with their scordalia. It packs a garlicky punch that will keep vampires at bay for a week, but it is so worth it.

  • Jeremy T.

Love love love! The ambiance is non-existent, but it's open 24/7, they serve Greek (ask for a freshly opened bottle if ordering by the glass), and the service staff is lovely. The food was out of this world good. So fresh!

  • Jenni P.

Flaming cheese had residual flavor like burnt oven. Greek salads had liquid at the bottom like the lettuce was served wet. The gyro meat was not evenly sliced like I'm used to. Spanakopita had too much dill and was soggy. Also not the cleanest establishment on Monroe. At the end of the day, these Detroit tourists can still say we ate Greek in Greektown. But we won't be back. We would not recommend it.

    (2)
  • T S.

I would not go back. Nothing about the meal was good. The gyro meat was subpar, even the salad was mediocre. Keep walking and try another Greek restaurant.

Came here with some co-workers for lunch recently. Haven't done too much Greek in the Metro Detroit area, so we figured we would check this place out. AMBIANCE- as soon as you walk in, you spigots of lamb meat rotating on a spigot. Definitely a plus in my eyes. This place really is not that big (seating for about 40-50 maybe), though they do have a roof, but my party did not go up there. Definitely not as done up as some of the other restaurants in Greektown, this dark dank restaurant definitely has some hole in the wall charm. SERVICE- we got to this place at about 11:20am. Mind you this place opens at 11:00, there was no one there to greet us when we got there. If I hadn't walked back to use the restroom, it's possibly the people in the back would not have even known we were there. When we finally got settled in, our server was polite and attentive. Other customers were getting in after us, and getting their orders taken care of first, but given the size of our group (9), and the fact that we were in no rush, this really didn't bother us. MENU- Food was broken into sandwiches, entrees, American sandwiches and Greek specialties. I must admit there were a few things on the menu I had not seen at other places (again, a bonus in my book). There was a garlic potato spread that sounded pretty good, but no one in my party was feeling too adventurous. Your standard Greek favorites were of course on the menu (gyros, souvlaki, spinach pie, saganaki). They also had lamb chops and lamb shanks which sounded pretty tasty. Sandwiches start at about $7, and entrees run anywhere from $10-$20 depending on what you get. FOOD- our table started with two orders of saganaki, which they lit on fire (OPA!). The saganaki was served with Greek bread. Neither the bread nor sagnaki were mind blowing, but decent. For lunch most people at our table got either a gyro (lamb or chicken). One health conscious coworker got chicken with vegetables, and a few got the chicken souvlaki sandwich without fries. I myself got a gyro platter (basically a gyro with fries). I could've (and should've) gone without the fries, but I felt the need to get them anyways. The platter, unlike the sandwiches, is basically a deconstructed gyro sandwich. I must say the amount of meat (and onions) is probably enough for about two sandwiches. Or if you're a pig like me, one really nice sandwich. The sandwich was tasty, and well worth the $9. OVERALL- solid. I don't know if I'd go out of my way to come here, but if I were in Greektown, I know where I can get one heck of a gyro. CELEBRITY RATING- Adrian Grenier

Great place to grab food after a night out with friends in Greektown. I got combination #1, the gyro and souvlaki. It's $13 but the portions are huge, perfect for me since I was super hungry and wanted to try different items on the menu. The service was good too, very prompt and checked up on us enough. Greektown definitely didn't disappoint, would come back again.

  • Rod H.

There is no care put into the food. My gyros was below average, the waiter said that this was the best thing on the menu.....well you guys are in trouble if that's the best you can do. Karen had the octopus salad, an ugly looking plate of refrigerated octopus marinated in a vinegar concoction. I have seen prettier vomits. Don't go here, there are plenty of other options around here.

You know when you walk into a place and you get a certain feeling that washes over you? You smell the food cooking, you see the people enjoying their food, you look for the person that is going to seat you. None of that happens here. You walk in the door and get a blast of heat from the spits that would burn the eyebrows off of Satan himself. How is that cook back there not sweating? Is he on drugs? But I love it. I love it. I love it. The atmosphere and corny Greek crap on the walls. The fake grapes on the ceiling that have been there since the trial and death of Socrates. The waiter douses his hands in vodka or whatever is in that vodka bottle. Oh my god, it's great. The souvlaki is great, the gyro meat is great. This is the best gyro sandwich I've ever had. I want to be Greek now.

You know what you are getting when you go. Home made gyro. The souvlaki is amazing. Nice beer selection in bottles. No taps. Staff is always friendly and willing to go the extra mile to make sure you enjoyed yourself.

Very poor service. Server was friendly but she took 15 minutes to show up to take our order, disappeared for an hour then brought our order (which was cold). Food lacked flavor but might be due to it being cold. Paying was just as painfully slow. Sorry Golden Fleece but we won't be returning.

I met up with family on Friday night, they wanted to go to Greektown and eat at the Golden Fleece. I've always gone to Pegasus. What a pleasant surprise this little dingy hole-in-the-wall was. We ordered 3 lamb gyros. Our meal arrived quickly, it was delicious and very affordable. I will definitely be back. I rated them 4 stars because of the structure. It seems dirty and old, even looks like there could be mold on the ceiling...I might not have ate there if my Aunt didn't swear it was amazing food. Service and food are 5+ star.... :) It's time to remodel guys!!!

    (4)
  • James M.

I have eaten @ every restaurant in Greek town. The food @ the Golden Fleece is the best. This would be a 5 star if they would just clean & update the place. Took my wife, & she walked out. She said, "I don't know how this place passes health inspection?!?!?!" Food 5 star, service 4 star, cleanliness & ambience half a star.

Wow when I have a craving for a big fat juicy Gyro I'm coming here. Great food you can watch them make it, Cozy atmosphere and a full bar. It Taste and smells as authentic as it gets. Caution you will smell like garlic for 2 weeks after you eat here :) but so fabulously worth it!

The menu on yelp is completely inaccurate. They do not honor the check in coupon. The food may be on par with Pegasus and Parthenon; but I recommend going to those places first for a better overall experience. ****The young man who was the day manager just sent me a long direct response detailing how he didn't like my review, so let me give a more detailed response. (if i can find his response thru yelp, i will take a snap shot and post it. As it was, Yelp closed out before I could finish my direct response to him.) We came in specifically for omelets. The waitress told us No. We stated it was the primary reason we came in because it was listed in the online menu. A manager came over to discuss it with us but said no again; and even attempted to paw thru my phone like we were best pals to see the menu I mentioned on yelp. We ordered coffee and soup, in which we said please and thank you every time there was an interaction. The day manager came back 20 minutes later to confirm that the posted menu on yelp is not theirs and then offered to make us an omelette. We declined. Since food review is primary to this Apps function, the coffee was excellent. The soup was only warm and high in salt. To the Young man acting as day manager - dont stand on 50 years of restaurant operation as your personal track record for customer service. As a caveat, you never know who you're speaking to. I can state with accuracy that I've been supporting Greektown with my business for over 30 years and feel secure in complementing service and quality when deserved as well as being honest when dissatisfied. Moreover, when I was in last Sunday night after the Wings game, I gave you a fantastic review complete with photos on Facebook. Looking at this positively, you've now made it much easier to chose where to go in Greektown.

This place has won award after award for their lamb gyro and it lives up to the hype. It is like no other lamb I have ever had. What makes this place truly special is their staff. I have come here sober and a little intoxicated and every time I have been treated like family. A must have for gyro lovers.

The first step is admitting you have a problem. I admit, I have a problem. I love Greek food...and I'm Irish! No 12 step program for me, I'm not willing to give up my addiction!!! Golden Fleece isn't a fancy place but the food is amazing. I've never had a bad meal here...since 1991, I've been a customer. They have the best gyros, soulvaki and rice. It's my stop before every RedWings game, auto show, and even after the Detroit Marathon. Don't be too impressed, I only did the 5k ;) It can be busy, hectic and crowded...all worth it to get your fix of the best greek food in Greektown. Enjoy...Opa!

DONT and I mean DO NOT come here. Why you ask? I'll tell you why! We had lunch with a mouse! I went to take a picture of it and realized I wasn't brave enough! It was limping and half of it's fur was gone... By that time I was done with my lunch and it was going to be coming right back up. I was going to review how their food was still not that bad. Not sure about freshness. Their portions have gotten smaller. Place is not clean. Oh my God, who am I kidding! Why review them. The mouse was cruising around the restaurant the whole time. Enough said. My skin is crawling.

Don't expect anything fancy or even great service. You go to Golden Fleece to eat their food and to smell like the restaurant when you leave. I always go to the Fleece when I just want a really good gyro. I have been here more times than I can count and I have never tried anything else.

I'm a big fan of the gyros at Golden Fleece. Typically I get the take out and watch the chef cut the multiple strips of delicious lamb or chicken while frying the accompanying french fries and adding the side of salad and toasted pita to the plate. The Greek dressing and fresh onions add to the overall flavor and complementing tastes of the gyro. I've been going to the Golden Fleece for several years and have enjoyed every meal. It also seems that the same guy is always there preparing the food! I have to go 4 stars and I'll definitely be back...

Best Gyro I've ever had! This place is a little bit of a dive, but in the best way possible. My table got saganaki, which was delicious. They bring out some really good bread to go with it and they'll keep it coming if you ask. I got a gyro and it was seriously the best one I've ever had. The meat was full of flavor, cut thick enough to be an amazing medium rare, and was piled on so high that I was a meat and tzatziki sauce mess by the end. I'll definitely be back for a bite whenever I'm in Greektown!

  • Ganymed S.

Ingredients seemed super low quality and old. Chicken had weird taste, tomato had weird unedible fibers in them. Generally no care given to quality of anything here. Ripped and dirty table cloth. Tomato sauce tasted as if it was from the cheapest can they could find.

The food is horrible and way over priced. I ordered a Greek salad with gyro meat. The lettuce was brown and I could taste the freezer burn on the gyro meat.

There are a lot of places to get a gyro on Monroe St, but Golden Fleece seemed to be calling us. Literally. There were two dudes waiting for take out near the doorway telling us how great it was. Turns out these two dudes were right. Both the gyro and souvlaki were excellent. The place is cramped in a good way. The service is friendly. And plenty of people order the flaming cheese, so you can get the experience of cheese on a plate on fire even if you're watching your dairy intake.

It's probably the diviest place on the Greektown strip, and I certainly wouldn't order everything on the menu, but the gyro (sandwich, not platter) is worth the price of admission all by itself. The best in Detroit, as far as I'm concerned. Like any good gyro joint, the meat spins in the window, dripping greasy goodness as it sizzles. I've never really bothered with the other items (that appear to be causing some of the lower ratings here), since you go to Golden Fleece for the gyros. You can eat it there, or they'll make it for you to-go -- either way it's delicious. Unlike a lot of places, they cut it into rough, thick, juicy pieces. Then they load it with tzatziki and onions, and wrap it all in an oversized warm pita. It's the hot, juicy meat that sets this sandwich apart, so you'll want to eat it quickly. 4 stars, since the other items have never looked outstanding, and the ambiance isn't spectacular. But try a gyro there and you won't be disappointed.

Took my family here before a live WWE event last night. It was loud, not very clean, over crowded and the food was just average if not slightly below. We could barely hear each other and they were stacking other people up right on top of us. It was really uncomfortable, I doubt we'd ever think about going back to this place ever again, it was not a good experience.

Golden Fleece is not the most delicious Greek food I've ever had, but it is cheap and open until 4am so it is my go-to place after going out in Greektown. They also do serve beer & wine (not sure about liquor) so you could even get some drinks with your gyro.

Hands down, this place is just not clean. If you can't even wipe the dirt off the front door, how can I trust that the proper hygiene is being used in the food prep? The food was fine. Moussaka was a bit burnt on the bottom. Service was attentive, but we were one of 4 tables in there at prime time on a Friday night. I used the pepper shaker, and thought that I probably should sanitize my hands before touching my pita. Yuck.

Every Greek diner I've ever been to served burgers and fries and little else. The Golden Fleece is a low key version that serves solid Greek plates. Stick with something simple and you won't go wrong. The staff is great. I was brought here by a friend that's greek - that has to count for something.

Golden fleece is a no frills little divy diner for great Greek food...I love their Dolmathes...my favorite! They just go down so good...yum...with a little hummous... I like...I like a lot!

Cheap, filling meaty gyros and shish kebabs, prompt and hearty service... this place won me over with its cheesy yet pleasant greek themed walls and hanging grape ceiling, as well as the greek folk tunes.

Came here after going to the Auto Show for a late lunch. Walked up and down Greektown and decided to give this place a try since it had some sort of award for Best Greek Food in the window. We walked in to a little old place. Tables crammed in, a small open kitchen to the side with the souvlaki roasting before our eyes. I instantly knew this place would be good. I ordered the seared chicken breast. It was fresh and delicious. My only complaint is that they use too much oil. The rice was covered in it, and it made the food a bit less enjoyable. You can definitely tell that it's still a family establishment. A lot of the other places in Greektown are closing and remodeling as fancy new places, which makes me sad. I would recommend this place to anyone who comes by. Even though Greektown is nothing but one little block of one little street, it's a fun little area.

Saganaki was excellent had to do it a couple times cuz it was my first time lol. Although the service here was a little subpar. Waiters did not seem so motivated and engaged in conversation.

Pretty tasty gyros at a reasonable price for the Greektown area. Plus they have super-cold shots of ouzo!

I had the trio dinner plate here, which meant a heaping plate of spanakopita, pastichio & moussaka. I'm sure none of the previous three food items are spelled correctly. The spinach pasty pie was pretty tasty and way more of a vegetable wave than I've had at other places. The pastichio was strangely good for what seems like Greek lasagna or pasta casserole. The moussaka was a huge festival of ground cowmeat and what seemed like potatoes on top. Since you really don't have enough carbs, there's a giant mountain of buttered rice with tomato sauce on the side. Tried a Marathon beer...nothing to call home about.

Order their gyro sandwich that comes with either fries or rice. The gyro platter is also very good. Probably among the best authentic gyro I've had anywhere. This place can get crowed very quickly as there's not many seats but be patient, it's worth it.

Golden Fleece is badass, like a honey badger...they don't care. Prices and a menu similar to a coney island, with a slightly more "restaurant feel". I would rank it above it's neighbor, Plaka -- which IS a Coney. We had the gyros and they were tasty and delish. The Tiki (I'm not going to spell it) sauce mixed w/ our shaved lamb, and the tomato and onion beautifully separated on the plated w/ a delicious fried pita thrown on top. More than enough food for two Gyros -- which means if you ask for extra pita (which is a zero charge) -- you get to take away another meal. My boyfriend had the lemon rice soup, and it too was good -- although I would have liked a smidge more lemon flavor in it. Our service was also amazing. I think our waitresses' name was "Kelly" -- I wish I could be sure, because she deserves a shout out. Quick and attentive. Courteous without lingering -- just all around great. If you're down in greektown and want a great meal for a fair price, I recommend GF over any of the others.

This place isn't the nicest restaurant in Greektown, but they never claimed to be. If you want cheap, delicious Greek food fast, this is your spot. It's not the cleanest (avoid the bathrooms if you're a germaphobe), and the waitresses usually seem to have a little bit of an attitude. But I always leave with a happy, full stomach, and with a few bucks left to spare in my wallet. Oooh...but if you call and order something for takeout, the takeout prices are raised considerably higher (probably an included gratuity or something). 2 gyros w fries for take out were $18!!!! I advise eating in.

We stopped by Greek town on our way out to the west coast and we decided to give the Golden Fleece a try. The restaurant was dark and a bit cluttered but the service was very fast and our waitress was very nice. The food (we ordered, a small greek salad and a chicken gyros platter) was only mediocre. Both the salad and the chicken gyros were drenched in dressing/sauce, the rice tasted microwaved and the pita rock hard. Aside from all of that the chicken was rather tender. I would go back. Not recommended.

It was OK, not great, but OK. Nice interior, food was just average. Greek salad was great, gyros just OK. The waiter had too many tables so wasn't as quick as we'd like. Overall, staff were super nice.

My favorite place in Greektown. The kids call it 'the fancy coney'. I don't know about fancy, but the Gyro is 2nd best in the state. I won't dilute the review by plugging the other place, but just know that this is the best gyro in Greektown. Order the platter and share it.

In Greektown Detroit, a bit touristry location, not sure if the food is touristry since I am not well-versed at Greek food. Very very busy and boisterous when I was there for supper. I had the souvlaki, overall it was decent but the lamb was a bit too well-done. My sisters had the Greek salad which they claimed to be decent. Prices are okay for the location, but not dirt cheap as others claimed them to be.

This place is really cool. It's in the Greektown section of Detroit, MI. I stopped in with my friend Tina for lunch while getting a personally guided tour of the city. The food was delicious and plenty! The Saganaki (OPA!) was a treat for an appetizer and my Chicken Souvlaki was big, hot & tasty! Very quaint, charming and worth popping your head in and having a bite to eat for lunch! I can't wait to go back!

Came here craving an octopus salad. After doing some quick & dirty math, realized I could get both the taramasalata (wanted my love to try it) AND the octopus AND spanakopita AND grape leaves and hummous and skordalia...for $2 more. Sold on the Pikilia, which is their Vegetarian Variety Plate. I did find it very odd that despite it including octopus & fish egg salad, it was "Vegetarian". LOL Greeks for you: "You don't eat meat? Here, have some lamb!" My thoughts on my meal: 1) Our waitress did not know what kind of red wine they had. I was presented a huge goblet double pour (ok by me) of Cabernet but it was ice cold from the fridge...(tsk tsk). 2) The taramasalata was highly diluted, not even salty or fishy whatsoever...whipped with mayonnaise or something. Yiayia would not be pleased. Did not eat. 3) The skordalia was WITHOUT A DOUBT prepared not only with instant potatoes from a box (unmistakable flavor) but way too much. It was like cold *slightly* garlicky mashed potatoes. Gross. Yiayia would be appalled. Did not eat. 4) Hummus was fair. 5) Spanakopita was good. Not quite crispy, but great flavor! 6) Grape leaves were mushy globs..forgettable. I recently made them at home for the first time and did a far better job. 6) Octopus was ...well...prepared in the standard vinaigrette per usual. I think it comes from a jar. Can't go wrong. Partner in crime got a cold beer, great fries and great lamb gyro. My recommendation? For Beer, Gyro & Fries - you've come to the perfect place...4.5 stars. Anything else? Go far away.

Went there because my boyfriend loves this place since he is from Detroit. The restaurant wasn't busy. I ordered chicken lemon soup and quail. I got my soup right away but my boyfriend and his friend got their food and were pretty much almost done eating. I waited and thought it was just taking a while to cook the quail and finally my boyfriend asked someone about the food. Apparently the waitress forgot to put my order in. She apologized for it and gave me a free desert but definitely ruined my first time eating there.

The is not great greek food but it is good greek food. I've been frequenting this tiny diner for multiple decades. The food is consistent and served up both fast and hot. I highly recommend the gyro. Very tasty with much flavour. Prices are reasonable for the area. There is a good selection of both draft and bottle beer. Along with wine choices. The cooking area is located out in the open in the front of the restaurant for all to view. No secrets here that's for sure.

I used to love this place and go there on a regular basis. Then the Saganaki was not being cooked all the way (one night we had to send it back 3 times before we got one that was cooked!!) and the cleanliness went down hill. The service went bad as well. For the same amount of money, better food, and a cleaner table/bathroom you can pick another place in greektown.

No problems here. Good authentic gyro, hot, with tomato and onion and cucumber sauce. (Maybe a little.too much sauce.) Good price, excellent atmosphere. They had two TVs, but this was no sports bar.

Best Gyros in the COUNTRY!! Hands-down! The very first time I ever had gyros was from this restaurant! When I was only 8 yrs old, my dad brought home a gyro plate from here and I loved it from the first bite! We've been going here ever since the early 80's and i JUST left there a couple days ago and got a good old gyro dinner...needless to say, it was DELICIOUS! Tastes just like it did way back when I was a little girl! I also tried their souvlaki and it was VERY YUMMY! I particularly love this place because they MAKE their gyro meat from scratch and use fresh ground lamb. Not the processed stuff you get at your average "greasy-spoon". I live in Chicago but whenever I come home to Detroit to visit, I ALWAYS ALWAYS have to stop in here for a yummy gyro! Very filling and super reasonably low prices. :o) BTW: Their avgolemono soup is EXCELLENT! Try it! Very zesty!

Best Gyros in the U.S. Low-end, low down, real deal....so real and DETROIT!! I've been going there for like 4 decades as a resident and now as a visitor. The boisterous atmosphere, funky decor, wonderfully tacky plastic grapes. Building is old and really beautiful and thank goodness there has never been any sort of remodeling to ruin it. This place is utterly perfect to wallow in the essence of Detroit, its charm is its lack of 'false' charm, gritty, real, energetic and just plain good honest food and thick yummy gyro, the likes of which I have just not found anywhere else in our country. If you go off hours, energy level may be low and music off, have them turn it on!! Get Greek here as its a preserved 1920s Athenian street place frozen perfectly in time in the ancient ruins of Detroit!

Enjoyed a tasty meal here this weekend. The flaming saganaki was a fun appetizer, and all four of us gave a thumbs up to the gyros served (love that the lamb meat is on a spit as you enter and is carved off for each order, but the pita was a bit dry). The greek salad was good, as the dressing was nice and tangy (lots of vinegar, not creamy). The waitress brought us a free slice of baklava to share - the perfect complement to the greek coffee we ordered and the perfect sweet ending to our meal. It is not the cleanest place, nor is it the biggest or most popular in Greektown. I personally like the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere, especially when the food is good.

yes. the GRUB: - Flaming Cheese is a requirement - OhhhhhhPAH! - sheesh kebab here was out of this universe... the smell alone gave me boners. - i would bathe in that Lemon Chicken Rice Soup - their gyro meat is probably the best on the block... tasty as all hell. - rice, pita, beer... give it all to me! the JOINT: - quaint and hoppin! - festive old world decor. greek action at its finest. - i loved my waitress, who knew greek chicks were so sassy?!?!? - accross from the casino the SQUEEZE: - cash and cards accepted - no strain on the wallet at all FINAL SAY: this was the highlight of my greektown experience.

I am really sad about giving this place 2 stars. I went to school w/ the owner's son and they hosted a little party for us upstairs, which was really nice. My friend and I stopped here last night. We got there early, and there were only a few tables full. There was no wine on the menu except the house wine in a carafe. We asked about any white wine & she said they had it, but wasn't sure what (wanted Pino Grigio) and it was $5/glass. We asked for a bottle since we knew we'd have at least 2 each. The bottle arrived barely chilled, almost room temperature. Maybe this is how it's served in Greece, but we're in Detroit. It was super hot last night, and hot in the restaurant, so warm wine wasn't that appealing to us. We ordered Saganaki, and gyros. The bread for the Saganaki was a little stale. The food was delivered fast, before we were finished w/ the app. I loved the rice & the sauce on it. Great flavor. I also really like their gyro. We were both disappointed in the pita. It was basically pocket pita, which we weren't expecting, and it didn't hold anything together. Our waitress was terrible. My friend asked for a glass of ice & extra napkins 3 times before she finally brought it to us. It took just as long to get our bill. With all of the other options for Greek food, I'd rather go somewhere else next time.

Wife and I went here for lunch, after checkin out the reviews here on yelp I thought to give it a try. we both ordered gyros I had fries and wife had rice, I Thought the gyros had a good taste, a little diffrent other greek resturants, the fries were o.k a little on the small side but everything had good portion size, wife was a little dissapointed, she noticed some of the meat was a little pink for her taste but were both still briething so thats a good thing, the prices are o.k. our waitress was very friendly and there were 5 cops that came and went so that would be a good sign that this place is pretty good. , the decor is a little busy but Im not complaining, I will defintly return to the golden fleece ( but maybe next time without my wife, but dont tell her, ssshhh )

One of the few remaining authentic Greek food establishments in Greektown. It survived many years because it's simply fantastic. The food is very fresh and you can tell it's homemade. Forget chain food gyros from places like Olgas (I believe Arby's has gyros now? yuck.). You can't go wrong with the Fleece.

Golden Fleece is an amazing Greek restaurant! They have the most authentic Greek food in Michigan! My server was very polite, Missy, She explained the menu in detail and was aware of all the wines that went with the Greek menu items! I had he Sauteed Chicken, My husband had the Trio, and My children shred the Gyro and Shish Kabob Combo! Everything was great! I would recommend ths place to all of my friends and family ANYTIME! Thank you Golden Fleece for a GREAT experience!

My review is going to shadow Marueen's below, well, because I was the friend mentioned in her review. She suggested it after noting that she didn't have the best recent experience at my favorite, Pegasus. So, I reluctantly agreed to try this place. The bottle of white wine we ordered was room temp so we asked for glasses of ice to put some cubes in it to chill it a little. The only problem was getting the waitress to come back once in a blue moon to give us ice or water or ANYthing. The place is cramped. Some rude a-hole came in and was trying to sit behind me just about when we were leaving and my chair was pushed out a little in what he thought was "his" territory I guess. He made some big production of bumping his chair in to mine so I made a comment to him that was less than lovely. I can't stand passive-aggressive turds like that, considering I didn't realize I was in "his" space and if he'd have approached it differently then I'd have happily helped a brother out. I am generally considerate, sometimes overly-so, but sometimes we don't realize things. Anyway, so yeah...the place is cramped. If you have long legs, I'd consider going elsewhere unless it's not busy and there's room to spread out a little. Stale bread, yuck. Gyro meat was OK but the pita was disappointing. It's the kind of pita bread you get at the store when you're on a diet and trying desperately to make something that tastes like normal food so you throw this pita in to your cart to make some "pita pockets". Read: dry, tasteless pocket bread. Even the eye-candy working in there (who unfortunately was not our server) could not bring me back to this place.

I am reluctant to give this two stars because of the prices you are paying simply due to the location. This is in addition to fairly average greek food and even more average service. This is not to say I didn't enjoy my meal but I simply can't recommend the golden fleece if other options are available to you.

This place is all about the food. No pretentious decor (or really, decor of any sort. But that merely adds to the home-cooked-meal-feel of the joint), no elaborate specialty drinks or servers in ridiculous costumes. This place is all about the food, and boy do they do that food well. Their Gyro's contain enough meat for 2, and their classic Greek dishes (particularly the Moussaka) taste like you just walked into someone's grandma's kitchen. Don't bother with those other, fancy-smancy places in Greektown; if you want good food, this is the place to go.

  • Brian G.

I am giving 4 stars because I really liked the food, place and the experience. My father and sister however did not like it. I very much enjoyed the vegetarian platter. It was the best spinach pie I have ever ate! The flaming cheese is SOOOO good! The waitress was so nice and even brought my dad a new chicken since he said it was dry. All he asked for was sauce, so it was a very nice gesture. I know I read that others thought the place was dirty and the service was bad but I couldn't disagree more- it was very clean and the staff was warm, friendly, and actually quite fun. I would definitely go here again!

I want to start by saying I have been going to Greektown for over 20 years and REALLY wanted to give the Fleece more stars but just couldn't for multiple reasons. Remember a 3 star is "A-OK" and is not bad!!! I was released from jury duty early so hit Golden Fleece for lunch. It was 1pm and there was only 2 other people inside. Hmm...interesting! The inside is cluttered and needs some cleaning. They do have a lot of Greek decorations, which I like, but just too much stuff everywhere. It's simple... organize and clean a little. They also serve their food on a paper plates which for this type of food just doesn't work good. I ordered the Greek Salad and Gyro sandwich. They don't have a combo so you have to order separate and was $12 plus $2.25 for a soda. They do have good bottled beer but I was driving so a no-no for me. The Greek salad was just OK. PROS: a lot of feta, beets and tomatoes were fresh, and decent size. CONS: salad was very very water. Not sure if it was the lettuce or the dressing but I had a salad soup when I got to the bottom. Also, lettuce was pure iceberg, nothing else. As for the Gyro, the Pros: HUGE, and I mean huge! Meat was tasty, tomatoes were fresh, yogurt dressing was good. Cons: the only cons I had was I asked for no onion and it had onions. If I went back I would order the Gyro and no salad. The gyro was good and definitely big enough to fill a big eater. I seem to be tough on Greektown restaurants because I believe it's such a huge part of Detroit and they sometimes become lazy because they know they will get traffic because of location. Thursday at 1pm and no Detroit lunch folks??? This is amazing to me because I know a lot of people that work down there and go out to eat almost every day. Most people flat out say "It's just not that good anymore and it's pricey". Ok I don't want to get off topic and into a Greektown discussion. LOL! Golden Fleece summary: Gyro was good, Salad was just ok, location is GREAT, inside it cluttered and needs some cleaning. Service is fast and usually not crowded.

This place always impresses me. the Gyros are amazing and the rice is really good.. the garlic dip was the best I've had so far. Even with the size of the opening day crowd for the tigers down town they were really quick at getting you sat and taken care of.

We wanted to try some food from Greek Town, and this place had the best Yelp rating, so off we went expecting a great new experience. We were seated right away by one of the waitresses in the front window, who tells us that we get the best seat in the house just for us! Then just as she motions us over there, the guy in the kitchen tells her not-so-nicely that she should have seated us in the back! Since the kitchen is right there out in the open when you walk in the front door, this conversation wasn't even close to discreet, and it had me wondering why he would say that to her so rudely. I let it go and decided to focus on what's up with the menu. The waiter suggested the Greek beer (Marathon), which was good enough and refreshing after a long day of work. The flaming cheese was spectacular, and delicious...which I carefully admit, as I am not normally a fan of goat cheese. The menu doesn't even indicate that it's goat cheese, so Capricorns beware! ;) All jokes aside, the Greek Salad was good, and the chicken gyro delicious and fresh. I was loving the perfectly ripe tomatoes. I would love to have given a better review, since the food was really good, yet our experience that had begun to redeem itself with good food, was again compromised. As I checked into the restaurant, I noticed that there was a 10% off entire order offer, so I showed it to another waitress when requesting the bill (I think they all help each other out...), and she wasn't actually aware of the offer. She showed it to her manager, who turned out to be the same guy griping at the first waitress, and he starts openly yelling at her that he has no time to look at the offer and that the customer is supposed to print out the coupon to redeem it...again, we are sitting right there...So at this point, the waitress starts to take my phone to the back of the restaurant to somehow print something from my mobile device which of course isn't even possible, and I have to call after her to say forget it. She doesn't need to go to the trouble of getting yelled at like that for a measly little 10% off our order. This place could do itself a favor and get a new manager that knows how to appreciate his employees and treat them with respect, at least in front of the customers.

I will give this place 5 stars for what it is. It is not trying to be the New Parthenon or Pegasus. So thanks to that. It is what I would consider a "Greek Diner" it doesn't have all the fancy stuff those other restaurants have. My dad and I always go in here when we want some Greek food fast. The place always seems to be less crowed then the other restaurants. They have great Greek salad, souvalki, and octopus. All I have tried at other Greek restaurants down town and they all taste similar. So why not go here and pay $2 to $3 per entree. Granted the ambiance isn't as "Greek" as you may like it... it works. If anything though the small round tables and the "outside" feel of the restaurant is more like eating in Greece than any of those fancy restaurants. While I was visiting Greece I don't think I ate at an indoor restaurant once. I have seen some of the bad ratings from people, but hey what can you expect from only a half-busy restaurant. Monroe Street just isn't the same anymore.

I've been frequenting this fine culinary establishment since the summer of '87. "What are your specialities?" is a common question fielded upon my entrance. The gyro's have gotten smaller over the years, but the quality hasn't suffered. Top notch. The taste provides me an aura of satisfaction not encountered in recent millenia by any other establishment.

First, the hummus and the tzatziki - just plain "close your eyes and savor the flavor" good. Secondly, the kebabs were tender and not overcooked, comes down great on a starving tummy. I'm not big on tomato sauce on buttered rice, but it's pretty okay. I would've preferred just having the buttered rice, but it's really my fault for not telling them everytime I eat here. They have a pretty good baklava too for dessert. Filo pastry warm and gooey with the nuts... can't go wrong with that. Best part, we had a great server named Roman who was friendly and gave good recommendations. Sadly, I never got to try the opa before I left Michigan.

I've been coming here since I was born and my parents have been loyal since they were in high school. I know I'll be loyal for years to come I've never had a bad experience here and the food has always been delicious. I always go for the chicken kebabs with rice and the flaming cheese.

By far the freshest Greek food in Greek Town. The atmosphere may not be what some of the other places are but you can't beet the food. The lamb is so fresh. The dressing on the Greek salad is out of this wolrd and the staff is always friendly.

Do they still have the fake grapes and vines hanging from the ceiling? I hope they do. I hope the Golden Fleece is as I recall it back in 1989-91, when I was in grad school at Wayne State and living on Larned & Congress. I could walk there, in the heart of Detroit's famed "Greektown" . . . have shish-kebab for about 3 bucks, jump on the People Mover (local elevated metro line) at Trapper's Alley Station and go to the Detroit Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena on the river and Canadian border. It was before the Wings won Stanley Cup numbers 8-9-10, but they were good and so was the Golden Fleece. Now, 16 years later in California, I still think of it and when the Wings are in town, I go with my Detroit ex-pat buddies and pull on my Gerard Gallant #17 Wings sweater, I want Golden Fleece as my pre-game meal! 3 Stars + 1 for nostalgia.
