This review is long overdue and much needed. My husband and I used Firebird for an after party venue for our wedding. Tony (one of the owners) and the crew went ABOVE AND BEYOND anything we could ever have asked for. The upstairs is perfect for an event. Exposed brick, a cool bar, lots of seating for those tired of dancing. The DJ provided was even better than our wedding DJ! The catered food was phenomenal as well--those pretzel bites went fast. The staff was phenomenal. So wonderful, polite, and attentive. Thank you all so much for a wonderful ending to our perfect day. If you're looking for a place to host a rehearsal dinner or other such special event this is it! :)

Quality pub food and good TV viewing. Fine beer selection and nice location in Greektown. The soft pretzel appetizer is a must and the shoestring fries are awesome.

Really like the atmosphere of this place. The wood everywhere makes you feel cozy and welcome. I have not actually eaten anything here so this review is just based on the drinks which are very good. The service is good. The bourbon cherries (I believe is their name) are phenomenal. I could eat way to many of them. Will be returning.

Food and drinks are awesome! Was there tonight with friends. Brandy and Nicole were the best bartenders. Great personalities and made sure our drinks never got low. Definitely recommend this place!

I finally decided to give FIrebird a shot the other day. My friend and I walked in and sat at a table. We had three different people approach us for a drink order. We sat at a table where we could see the bar so we watched them make our drinks. We see the bartenders trying to pick something out of one of the drinks with a straw so as soon as the drinks got to our table we checked them out. My friends drink had two bugs floating around in it. The guy sees we noticed and comes over takes the drink and makes us a new one with a half hearted sorry. What angers me about this is they knew the drink had bugs in it yet they still brought it to the table. Also the prices are a bit unreasonable. I will never be back.

I have been going to the Greektown area for several years bouncing around to the various bars offered. I can even remember when the Firebird Tavern was Marilyn on Monroe's. To be honest I always walked past Marilyn's thinking the establishment was closed for business even though it wasn't at the time. From the time Firebird opened it has been the 'it' place to go for not only my friends and I but thousands of satisfied customers. Typically a new place opens and it is all the rage for a short while until the hype dies down and the patrons find a new hip place to go. This has not been the case for Firebird and for good reason! From the ambiance of the bar, the amazing friendly and knowledgable staff, the great good, the well thought out mixture of drinks that is continuously added to, and the awesome owners who are very much front and center instead of only behind the scenes. Also, did I mention you can schedule events here too? From business meetings to birthday parties to black tie events, you cannot go wrong! They have the ability to accommodate exactly what you are looking for and more! Firebird is a place you can go and be completely comfortable like you are at your neighborhood bar. If you have not visited this lovely gem yet, what are you waiting for?!?! I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Awesome burgers, great atmosphere, solid selection of drafts. The crowd is fun, the staff was awesome. Please try it!

Wings! Sweet. Delicate. Crunchy yet soft. I appreciate the real life Parmesan they sprinkled upon the wings. I like the open brick. Good music. Also the Lana del Ray look alike waitress was nice!

Really like what they've done here. First and second floor are amazing. Great beer selection and prices. If you get a chance stop in here for lunch. Plenty of HDTV's to see all the games on. The look and feel of this place is just like the corner bar, but offers so much more.

Great drinks, service, and very friendly atmosphere! The beer selection is pretty impressive, and the mixed drinks are delicious yet affordable.

My friends and I go to Firebird on a regular basis, and have spent plenty of money. But after last night most likely will not be going back after our experience. We had meet a birthday party there around midnight and they were seated at the table in back in the first level. Everyone decided to go upstairs, 4 of us stayed behind to get a drink. All the sudden a waitress starts telling us we didn't pay a bill at the table. Which none of us had a tab at. After trying to explain that is was someone else at the table and one of us could try to go find them upstairs and get them so they could pay. Before we were able to the owner walks out from the back. He started to accuse and yell at us for the same thing (his breath reeked of alcohol, clearly drunk). My bf tried to explain what happen and the owner tried to start a fight with him. After standing at the bar awkwardly blocked in by these two, we decided to pay the $24.00 tab. Just so we could try and enjoy the hour left at the bar to celebrate a birthday. Won't be heading back after this display of poor customer service.

The upstairs bar staff didn't know their way around and seemed completely overwhelmed despite not being full. They might have been extra help brought in for St Paddy's Day. I hope they weren't regular staff. The service was terrible and I have no interest in going back.

Impressive beer selection highlighting some of Michigan's best on tap. The food is delicious, unique, affordable and flavorful. It's exactly what you would expect from a New American Tavern experience. Great spot for lunch, happy hour, a sporting event or any night out in the D. Everything Detroit needed in food and beverage establishments.

You have to try Owen's grandmother's recipe sausage ricotta cheese with arugula. Grandma always knows best! I will be back for more!!!!

I keep wanting to go, but my husband was resistant due to their limited menu. But I won out today due to crowds at other Greektown restaurants. I'm sad that we hadn't visited earlier, and I know that we'll be there often through the spring, summer, and fall. We both loved this place! They do simple food, but they do it really well. I appreciate that. Some restaurants in Detroit get a little precious with comfort food and it comes across as trying too hard. I love a good burger, and this one is delicious. No, it is not one of those huge things that drips juice down your arm. It's a diner burger. But it's delicious. And the fries...I don't normally eat all of my fries (after just a few, I get tired of them), but I ate all of mine and some of the enormous side order that my husband had ordered. And truffle mayo...mmm... I'm looking forward to going back for poutine soon! My husband got said fries and the Michigan salad with chicken, which he said was good, too. The staff strikes the perfect balance of being attentive and not being too overbearing. And they truly wanted to make sure that we enjoyed our food. Congratulations! You have some new fans.

Nice new spot, great beer selection. Food looks good but we didn't have any. On a Saturday night it had a pretty decent crowd. The DJ was playing good music upstairs. The door man was really nice when we got there too.

Stopped in on Sunday evening at about 8 there was maybe about 6 people in the whole place. Took a seat at the bar waited about 15 minutes the bartender never greeted us or even looked our way. Two people walked in after us and were immediately served. Disgusted by the way we were treated was excited to try out the new place but was highly disappointed defiantly not a good first impression. Won't be back!

I went there on a Saturday night. It was packed but fun. I would definitely return again and enjoyed the great cocktails they have on the menu. If anyone's downtown looking for great bar to go to I would suggest this one right away; it was clean in the crowd was young and fun. I will definitely return here again, you have to check it out.

UPDATED 3/13/15: Firebird now charges a $5 cover. This drops it from memorable to just another Greektown bar. One of the best things about Firebird was they were defiant in charging cover (even as other bars around them did). I've never understood why we should have to pay $5 to then go pay for 1000% marked up alcohol. If there is a band or live entertainment, then that makes sense, but $5 just for the privilege of buying expensive booze? Firebird is still a good place, but dropped significantly in my opinion. Firebird is one of the best places to go downtown. The atmosphere gives everyone anything they want: more of a pub style downstairs, a club atmosphere upstairs, and a nice "bonus" room upstairs where you can take a break from dancing and chat. Our bartender, Nicole, was absolutely amazing. She's been on staff twice that I have been there and each time has been one of my best nights out in Detroit. That's no coincidence: she's attentive, friendly, and pours an excellent drink. We'll be back soon!

Was at Greektown walking around and stopped in for a drink. Right off the place looked very clean, warm and inviting. I did not eat but sat at the bar. Just felt very comfortable. The food that was coming out looked really good and the place had a good crowd. They did a very nice job with the re-model.

We stopped in after the Tiger's game Sunday. What a great place. It's impressive inside, with exposed brick, original metal tiled ceilings, and beautiful wood molding and floors. What a welcomed addition to the area. The upstairs looks perfect for a private party. If it is not open, take a peek while you're there. We tried the PB & J app and the soft pretzel. Loved them both. The warm dipping cheese with the pretzel is out of this world. Could not put it down. The jelly in the PB & J is homemade, and you can tell. We enjoyed the service and will be back for sure.

I really liked this place. I came her for a Tuesday lunch with a group of friends before the Auto Show and was kind of surprised to find it mostly empty. It's got a very warm and cozy pub feel to it. We had an excellent waitress, Nicole, who really knew how to guide us through their draft beers and menu. She was really enthusiastic about her beer recommendations and picked some great winners for us(and a few small samples that got us to buy more pints!) We then decided on splitting some poutine for the table and getting a round of burgers. The gravy they put on the poutine was out of this world and works perfectly with their thin and crispy fries. To further enhance this, Nicole gave us a round of truffle mayo that added another layer of awesomeness to the dish. The burgers were very good too- I wouldn't say they were anything amazing(kind of reminded me of a simple In-and-Out double cheeseburger). All in all, it was a great meal and got me through 7 hours at the auto show! I'll definitely be back!

Nice bar located at the former Marilyn's that was nicely remodeled this year. Firebird always has a good soup of the day and great poutine. Good selection of 12 beers on tap and a full bar. The bartender is terrific --Michael if my memory serves me well -- he's quick to offer service, very friendly, and knowledgeable about the product. I didn't know until the bartender asked where I work, but employees of certain companies get a discount...about 15% off.

I went to this bar on Saturday night with my family loved the atmosphere. What I have a problem with is the fact that this establishment takes your credit card fine but over the course of the night I watch the bartenders get drunk. By the time I wanted to cash out around 1am they were completely wasted. I had two drinks and it took me 40 mins for them to figure out that there were two different people with the same last name and kept forgetting about cashing me out. Very frustrating since I am a bartender also and watched them mess up on drinks and drop things. To the point they got very upset at me and the patrons because apparently we were being rude. Well maybe if they were not wasted we would not have to be rude. I don't understand why an establishment would let their employees drink on the job or maybe they are not aware of this but something needs to change. I would love to come back but not if this is how they want to run a business.

Came in on a Thursday before a Tigers day game. Alexis was the bartender. She's quit the pistol. It was a bit too early in the day to be prepared for her sassy demeanor, but she was very good at what she does. The place has 12 beers on tap. All nice craft beers. No Budwiser on tap here. They also have a great bourbon collection, including Bookers, Basil Hayden's and Knob Creek. Got lunch, we had the Philly Cheese steak and a Fried Green BLT. The Cheese steak was very good and prepared as expected. It came with homemade chips that were a bit over cooked. The BLT was interesting. Fried green tomatoes, bacon, shredded lettuce and a jalepeno mayo. It was good, but would have been better with lettuce that wasn't shredded. The stuff on the sandwich was wilted from the hot tomatoes. We also had the big pretzel. Not as impressive as Hofbrahaus, but good none the less.

I brought some people here expecting decent quality food. I more chose this place for the convenience of location and simplicity of the menu than anything else. However, when I see a small menu I usually expect the items that are available to be exceptional. This was the complete opposite. The fries were not even worth my time. They were stringy and tasteless. And my buffalo chicken wrap had no flavor besides the average buffalo sauce. The service was fine, but overall this place was really unimpressive.

Went here last night for a going away party. The upstairs was reserved for the party and I have to say it was quite large and a nice time. Very clean from what I could see, but very very dark and loud. We didn't do food here, but we all were drinking. I first ordered a Shorts Soft Parade, but it did not taste like one AT ALL so I made a switch to Ciroc and they are pretty generous with their pours so much better decision. :P not sure if beer was just me or if it really wasn't a Soft Parade so eh. Edit: I just found our from my SO our tab for about 8 drinks or so was only 40 bucks. That was with what I mentioned and he was doing Jack/Coke. Great prices for the pours. We also definitely got two free drinks from our math, but we were also the only ones to start a tab when the upstairs was reserved for the party.

Ladies - they have purse hooks. Purse hooks conveniently placed everywhere! I'm in love with this place. They have their OWN bourbon blend, from the makers of Woodford. They have a charitable cocktail - $1 of every cocktail is donated to a local charity. The saurkraut balls with mustard were amazing. The fried green blt is as good for dinner as it is for breakfast. AND when I asked the bartender to just "make me something with bourbon" she crafted a delicious, well thought out beverage.

Best bar in Detroit!!! Tim is the best bartender ever!! If you are ever in Detroit, and find yourself in Greektown, please visit this place. Fantastic bar, helpful and personable staff. Great bartenders! So glad I came here on my first ever visit to Detroit, this was a wonderful place to show off the new rejuvenated city. It's a must when visiting Greektown. Great beer selection too!

My wife and I decided to try this place because of a referral off of television. We both had burgers and fries. They were average at best. Absolutely nothing special. Don't get me wrong here. They weren't bad. They just weren't special in any way. I can name 20 places with better burgers in the Detroit area. The fries were just blah fries. The building is an old bar with a lot of character. The service was decent with no issues.

Not sure they want to sell drinks here . Since they're pretty understaffed . More bar backs than bar tenders . Otherwise everything else is good

Great place for lunch. The drinks are a bit pricey for how small they are. The food was great I had a fried green tomato BLT, it was fantastic. The frys came out super hot as well. The server was very nice and knew what she was doing. Sitting at the bar is the way to go.

Great selection of draft beers and small but well prepared menu. Friendly staff and manager Rachael who is on top of what's going on. Great place to eat before or after a game downtown.

Came in for lunch and it was decently empty. The diner burger was pretty superb. It was a basic, no frills American burger. Double patty with American cheese and bacon. I admire the fact that this is the only burger they offer and that they hide behind nothing. In fact it comes with no sauces or crazy toppings. It is a burger that could compete with Five Guys (the gold standard IMO). The beer selection was okay. But the service was amazing. Tim the bartender was very knowledgable about was on tap and literally gave me a flight sampler on the house. A very solid place.

I haven't eaten here yet, but it looks like I should! We just came for the "club" part of the evening, and it was actually a really good time. It's big, and just posh enough without being pretentious. Everyone was dancing and singing and having a great time, and the DJ was good. I would definitely take a group of friends here to go dancing again.

The Firebird Tavern is a must visit on a trip to Greektown. Being from out of state we really enjoyed the large selection of different local beers available both on tap and in bottles. While there we snacked on some of the Poutine, which was quite delicious. All of the staff was super friendly and the service was great. If we find ourselves in the Greektown area again we will surely stop at Firebird Tavern for a few more beverages and another snack.

Came in on a Friday evening around 8pm, lots of tables were available which was convenient. I got the corned beef sandwich and my boyfriend got the philly cheesesteak. I enjoyed my sandwich, it was yummy! I love local corned beef, it always tastes better. My boyfriend didn't love his sandwich though, claiming that the cheese used on it tasted like nacho cheese, and overall, it didn't taste like an authentic philly cheesesteak. His sandwich came with chips and mine came with fries, which we were both okay with, but neither were anything special. The atmosphere was alright, bar was clean, I would return again, but only for drinks as I wasn't totally blown away by the food.

Josh makes great drinks. Great food. Great service. Everybody here is really friendly. Even got to speak with one of the owners and he was great. So far, my favorite place downtown Detroit.

Came in here a couple Sundays ago for Lions football. The place was pretty crowded. The service was good considering the rush. We split the buffalo chicken wrap and the muffaletta. The buffalo chicken wrap was really good. The muffaletta was just okay. Because it's cold, the bread is just a lot to handle and has a really dry texture to it. Fries were solid. I'll definitely be back to try some stuff on the menu again. I'll probably steer clear of the muffaletta because it's not to my personal liking. Overall I'd probably give this place 3.5 stars if I could, but that could easily be bumped up to 4 after I try more things off the menu.

    (3)
  • David P.

The buffalo chicken was pretty damned tasty. The drink prices were more than reasonable. And there's always love in my heart for a bartender that knows their beer and scotch selection well. If you're wandering around the downtown area and DON'T stop in here, you're doing yourself a disservice.

First time here and for sure not the last. Stopped in for dinner prior to red wings game with the wife. Great location: across from Fishbones, and right next to a major Parking lot. Menu? While not extensive, it had a good number of options for all. Wife had a chicken salad wrap while I went with the meat loaf- both were great. Drink list? Decent tap list, even bigger bottle list. Would we return? For sure!! So should you!

A friend and I went to a burger festival where Firebird had samples. Their burger was our favorite of what we tried that day. We were in the Greek town area recently and stopped in for burgers and drinks. The bar is in a very cool space. Dark polished wood, exposed brick wall and some still-there stained glass. The Lions were playing and they had a good number of well placed flat screens tuned to the game. They have the Goldilocks amount of TVs, not too many, not too few, just right. We all ordered the diner burger. It's not anything fancy, two thin patties, cheese, the regular toppings, with a special sauce (similar to a Thousand Island dressing) and bacon if you choose. It is a solid burger. The fries that come with are thin and crispy. I noticed on the menu they had poutine, but this seemed like a bit much during this visit, but I would try them next time. The service was great, the server did a nice job taking care of us and we had no complaints. We were here on a Sunday and I should mention, as I did not see it elsewhere, that they are only open on Sundays during home games (Lions, Tigers, Red wings).

Never ate here before, just drinks. Portions were large and food was excellent. I had a grilled BLT made with fried green tomatoes and jalapeño mayo. It was fantastic on toasted rye bread. Josh the bartender recommended and it did not disappoint

I dig this joint. The ambiance is dim, quiet and almost chalet-like with the stain glass windows while the atmosphere is chill and relaxed. There are lots of dark accents and a nice sized bar with plenty of capable staff behind it....FYI they make a really decent Sazerac cocktail. I'd recommend trying one from Alexis. The menu isn't huge which makes choosing easy. We ordered a couple apps...their Gyro potstickers were wonderful. They maybe weren't cooked all the way through but the flavors were great and alongside their tzatziki, they're a winner. Their (Firebird Balls?) were killer too. Sauerkraut in a hushpuppy type dough served with a trio of mustard for dipping...also solid. Prices are reasonable the location is just right and it wasn't packed like most of the other spots on the Greektown strip. If you haven't been already this place is worth stopping into.

An excellent place in the middle of greektown! They are setting the bar high with their incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff, delicious menu choices, and finely crafted cocktails! I highly recommend stopping in there if you are around Detroit. I had the fried green BLT with the poutine fries the other day and it was fantastic! Also ask the bartender what their favorite drink is... They made me an awesome basil gin gimlet that was perfectly refreshing!

The front guy of security 5/29/15 at Aprox. 11:45-12 was so disrespectful!!!! I wanted to cry!! Visiting my cousin out of town this is the last thing I needed to deal with. We wanted to make sure we were charged the right amount and he disrespected us! I won't and never will come back to this place, I wish we would because I love the atmosphere!!!

Went here on a first date. This is my kind of bar! Good beer on tap, our server knew what she was talking about, and an ENORMOUS pretzel! I just wish they would put the ABV of the beers on the menu. I don't know if I will see that guy again, but I will definitely be back to the Firebird!

Poor service . Couldn't get a waitress at all, bartenders just looked overwhelmed & annoyed. Way under staffed & poor training. A bar should never pour warm pop cans onto liquor over ice. Instantly makes pop go flat. But I guess when you have the prime spot by greektown they can get away with that & still turn a profit . Oh well. I'll never go back.

A nicely run restaurant! Our server, Jessica, was pleasant, efficient, and had a personality. She was able to answer a couple questions about the menu without having to ask anyone else. The owner, Owen(years ago I hung out at Pulse), was actively helping the staff and checking on tables. He offered a genuine thanks for coming to people on their way out. The menu was really perfect for the causal but nice bar that it is. The price point was surprisingly reasonable . I have 22 years in this business and have to say I'm impressed.

They have the veggie burger back and its good. My only feedback would be to have a better backup option in the event that the veggie burger is out of stock. Fancy grilled cheese?

It was pretty dead inside here for a Thursday night. I imagine it gets more packed on the weekends. We walked past here at first when exiting the parking center and debated going inside and were told by one of the lovely staff members that this was an awesome bar. She was off duty and enthusiastically expressed that its one of her new favorite places. Holt had been here before and I'm an overly curious kid. The doors are very large and almost ornate looking. It's intriguing and the outside of it is painted red. I did end up coming back after checking out the skybar for a last drink and the end of the Jets game. I must say, everyone in that bar was rooting for the Jets. The bartender was also from New York. He poured the 'special drink of the day' which consisted of gin and lime juice for the most part. A little too heavy handed on the lime. Could have used more soda and gin. But it wasn't bad and I definitely didn't taste too much bitterness which I think I actually like at times. But it was cheap for a 'fancy' drink. I think this is more of a beer kind of bar though and their list was extensive. Great new addition to the neighborhood.

My boy Chuck goes here every Friday so I know he loves it, for me I thought it was pretty darn good. Dance floor could be bigger but otherwise I enjoyed it quite a bit! Classy but not some super fancy swanky place, so right up my alley!

Walked into Firebird on accident just wandering around Greektown My friends and I did not want a a formal sit down dinner, and this was the right choice. Service was friendly and the the place was not crowded. We ordered beers, a couple of pretzels and the gravy covered fries The pretzel was top notch and a good choice, You got to have one I found the fries were "meh" at 7pm, but I think they would taste even better after midnight after leaving the club or casino.. I would probably avoid this place on a game day as it gets packed, but all and all a good alternative if you do not want to spend an arm and a leg at a restaurant.

Went for dinner before a redwings game. Cool place..lots of character and charm. However, the service was HORRIBLE. I was meeting my buddy there for the game and I got there first. I walked in, the sign said to seat yourself so I found the only empty table and sat down. I sat there for ten minutes and not once did anyone even acknowledge my existence. Servers walked by, brought drinks to neighboring tables, cashed out the table right next to me and never even looked in my direction for me to flag them down. Two people at the bar left so I went and snatched those seats and although I got a drink, the service wasn't much improved. Had to ask for menus, never checked to see if we were ready to order had to tell her we were ready just in general it seemed like none of the staff wanted to be there and wait on us. This was 630pm not even close to going home time for them so I don't understand what the deal was. The food was good.. Typical bar food burgers and wings nothing great. Will mostly likely never return and would not recommend it to a friend!

I have been to Firebird twice and everything I have had has been really great. The first time I went for lunch with co-workers. Our waiter was not too sharp, but the food was awesome. I had a buffalo chicken wrap with fries and truffle mayo and my co-workers both had burgers, which we all loved. The second time I came for dinner with my husband. Our waitress this time was great and very knowledgeable. We shared poutine, the pretzel app and a burger with fries. Both of us thought everything was amazing. The pretzel is freshly made, just enough salt and served with a beer cheese dip. The burger was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. I have to give them a extra bonus for their truffle mayo, which takes everything up a notch. The owners have been in both times and seem very invested in the success of the restaurant, always asking how everything is and making sure you are taken care of. I have to also give kudos for their updates to the building, they did a good job. We also learned there is Trivia now on Wednesday nights from 6-8pm, and I will be sure to be back for that.

Good quality food for a bar/pub.. Love the atmosphere here and the prices are reasonable.. Beer selection could use some improvement I thought.
