Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The BEST Mexican food in the entire US! We've lived all over the country and nothing compares to Evie's. The best tamales, caldo, huevos rancheros, beans, rice...the list goes on. Pretty much everything is excellent, and the prices are dirt cheap. Whenever we come back to MI to visit, we always make sure to stop here at least once for a meal!

This is an authentic Mexican restaurant. Every thing is good, not great.i have met my buddies there for lunch many times and always been happy. You can even mix and match the luncheon specials for no extra charge. I mean you can get any two food items on the special, such as one beef enchillada with salsa verde and one chicken with mole, etc. etc.. Ordering lunch can be fun, not a chore. Service has been fast and polite. I also like choosing my own free cookie for desert.

Early one morning, I went on a journey for a real Mexican breakfast, so I cruised on down to Mexicantown. Completely by accident, I ended up in front of the storied Evie's. Why not? So I went in. I was immediately struck by the warm atmosphere, the staff that gave you the impression you were their family and they were anxious to feed you. I ordered two breakfasts so I'd have a variety of stuff to try. Everything, from the chorizo to rice and beans was absolutely fresh, lovingly prepared, and delicious. I literally cannot wait for an excuse to go back to Evie's.

The opportunity to finally eat at Evie's presented itself when a friend and I found ourselves in SW on a Friday afternoon for lunch and the place we had intended to dine at had closed its doors for good. Evie's keeps pretty odd hours for a restaurant, in my opinion, and we've never actually seen them open until yesterday. You can imagine our delight when we were actually about to dine at the elusive Evie's. This place was pretty much a disaster, although clearly a popular place. Lots of locals chowin' down on heaping plates of Mexican goodness. I saw a plate of chimichangas that made me swoon and I now know I have to head back to Evie's (in spite of our less than stellar experience) just for those. With regard to the food, the chips and salsa were better than average, and the hot salsa in particular had excellent flavor and heat. I ordered the tamale meal (a steal at $4.50) and got one each of the chicken, pork and spicy pork (the three varieties they had that day, which rotate). The beans and rice were meh, but the tamales? Oh my. So good! They are tinier than any tamales I've ever seen, but this makes for an excellent meat to corn mesa ratio, in my opinion. They do not have the soft corn tortillas for the tacos, but I had a bite of my friend's fried-flour one and the tortilla was yum, but the chicken inside not so much. The service was meh. No refills on our water or chips, but whatever. Sometimes you just have to chow down on some ice cubes to quench your thirst. The real downer was the ick factor, which I can get over if everything can make up for it. Everything was sticky and the bathroom was terrifying, with carts full of the plates from recently bussed tables nearly blocking the doorway. Not exactly appetizing. I don't know. It was good. Worth the hype? Probably not. Best tamales I've had to date? Probably.
(3)Kelly B.
Best tamales ever! We got there early on a Sunday morning no crowd got a dozen spicy ones to share for $8. Fast service, great price and they were delicious. Nice heat, perfect meat/masa ratio and moist. Yum.

Maybe I am sheltered in the area of tamales but for years, Evie's tamales are those which I've compared every other tamale I've eaten to. I have been eating them since I was a kid and to me they are truly a little piece of Heaven in your mouth. Someone mentioned that they are dry but I haven't found them to be per my taste, and I love dipping them in the sauce. I have not eaten anything else at Evie's and normally I get the tamales in bags to go. I am a die-hard, long-time fan of their tamales though. While my experience at this place is perhaps not a well-rounded one, I based this review on what I HAVE eaten there - just the tamales!
(5)S F.
I really like Evie's. It's a small, mom-and-pop, sometimes overlooked restaurant in Mexicantown. I've had the tacos/burritos dinners with beans and rice...all basically standard fare that is not anything out of the ordinary from other mexican restaurants. The only time I do come here is to satisfy my cravings for any of the following things: 1. tamales - best I've had in town 2. chicharrones - freshly fried bite-sized chunks of crispy, fatty, porky goodness 3. Mexican meatball soup (albondigas soup) - very comforting and flavorful Their mild salsa is really good with light spice and sinced it is cooked, sometimes during wintertime, they serve this warm with your chips which is a nice touch. The prices are extremely reasonable as you will see from other Yelpers.
(4)Sally B.
I'm surprised by some of the mixed reviews for Evie's, because we find it to be consistently delicious. I thought I'd been around the tamale block, as it were... perhaps not. These are the best tamales I've ever had, including the ones I had when I lived in the Southwest. We love the hot sauce (admittedly, sometimes it's not very hot), it's always tasty. On the weekend, they often have Albondigas (meatball soup with lots of cilantro)... yummy! Everything is good - - tacos, Mexican sandwich, enchilada suiza, and that-fried-chicken-whose-name-escapes-me.
(5)Patrice W.
Delicious!! I love tamales, however most places don't have vegetarian tamales, so I rarely get to eat them. Evie's has bean tamales that are great! My dad loves their chunky beef burrito. We have been going there for 6+ years and their food has been consistently good. They also have great service and always remember us. Lastly, you can't beat the free cookie from La Gloria at the end of the meal. Authentic goodness!
(5)Jacquie T.
I've been going to Evie's since I was a wee one (my grandpa was Mexican), and they've ruined me from ever enjoying any other tamales. I don't even attempt to order tamales at a Mexican restaurant because I know they'll never compare. I can't say that I've ever actually eaten dinner/lunch at Evie's, but I always make it a point to stop in and get a dozen (or two) of their masa-filled goodness. Make sure to ask for extra hot sauce. If you're reheating them, be sure to keep them wrapped in the husk to keep them moist.
(5)Ala M.
Delicious mexican food very authintic love the chorizo and eggs! only thing is the workers need to greet there customers when they walk in and should be more attentive.
(4)Jonny P.
Was cruising around this past Saturday and decided to swing by to pick up a bag of tamales. They were good & I definitely want to come back in for a "special order." I was a bit disappointed by the sauces. Over all they weren't quite up to par with the "mid-night" specials I would get from Claudio in Chicago but they were tasty. Will update this review in the future...
(3)Julie S.
I no longer live in the Detroit area, and although not of Mexican heritage, consider myself quite particular about my tastes in Mexican food. Because I am unable to find a decent homemade tamale in all of West Michigan, we now make our own. Evies is still the standard to which I hold all tamales. I truly can find NO fault with them, and find it difficult to visit Detroit without a pilgrimmage to this establishment. It just ain't a trip back to Detroit unless I stop in here for breakfast. I've never even bothered to branch beyond the pork tamale in regard to the varieties they have available. Why bother to? Why mess with perfection? Their carnitas are also very respectable. Don't bother going if you want an aesthetically stimulating experience. That's NOT what you go to Evies for. It's about the tamales.
(5)Carmen M.
I had the botanas and the pick 3 combo- two tamales and a chunky beef burrito. Atmosphere was so- so. Food was pretty good, rice and beans not good at all. I did get some tamales to go which were very good. The free cookie was a nice touch. I would go again.
(3)Chad C.
My memory of Evie's from when I last lived in Detroit back in 2001-05 was a 4-star place, but the tamales and breakfast I had this last time around was simply fair to middling. The salsa (even the hotter one) didn't make the food taste any better since it was so watery and tasteless. The greeter (Evie?) and server were nice folks though. Hopefully I just caught them on an off day.
(2)A C.
the best tamales around!!!
(5)Travelin B.
The tamales barely seemed home made! I have no idea what people see in these tamales...if you are getting tamales to go then go to Algos Especial Mercado on Bagley near the Honey Bee market. Evi's were dense with little meat. But I will say the salsa is damn good. I'm from L.A. so perhaps I am a little more particular, but really these are the worst tamales i've ever had in my life.
(1)Marty M.
My grandma used to live on Toledo st near grand. She made the world's best tamales. I live in SF now and the tamale lady comes to Zeitgeist to sell her homemade tamales. Then there's Evie's. Right in the middle. Actually, much closer to grandma's than the crook selling tamales to drunk people at $3 a pop. $3??!! I hope she sleeps on a big comfy bed. Because otherwise there's no reason she should be sleeping well being the plunderer of drunks that she is. I'm hittin' up Evie's for lunch today! 5 stars is reserved for Francesca Garcia.
(4)Atom G.
Always a favorite for lunch. The specials are great and get at least a dozen tamale. Save room for the pastry.
(5)Jack L.
This long time regular patron has fallen out of love with this place. I can put up with them having to tell the busser to lay out chips and salsa for each new customer (how complicated is that job?) or having to ask for water (shouldn't that be automatic? especially when offering hot salsa?), and I'll forgive the time they decided to put the salsa in squeeze bottles and it sprayed all over me (hello? chunky sauce through a narrow opening, they didn't see that disaster coming?) but my last few visits the food was just bland. And they close the kitchen while still open. Obviously nobody understands the business. Yesterday was the worst. They were out of beans so they offered double rice. Whatever. When the food showed up the burritos were half size. This is how you compensate for being out of a menu staple? Scrimp on the rest of the dish? Like I said, they don't understand their business. I heard a while ago that the owner was thinking of closing. Maybe they should do that if they think they can just phone it in.
(2)Tony M.
The tamales I had, jalapeno-cheese and spicy chicken, were great. Here is the surreal phone conversation I had in order to buy them: Me: "I'd like a dozen jalapeno-cheese and a dozen spicy chicken, please." Them: "You gotta order those ahead of time." Me: "Isn't that what I'm doing?"
(4)Dan J.
Not the cleanest restaurant ever. I thought this was an abandoned building for several years. Maybe it adds to the appeal. The food is great. The prices are better. $5 is all you need to have a full meal here.
(4)Kathy H.
I love Tamales! So when I heard of Evie's I had to make the trip down to Mexican Town from West Bloomfield. This review is based solely on the tamales. Evie's does make a good tamale, not the best I've ever had but good enough that I still took an extra dozen home with me. I'd love to see them season the pork just a bit more but the masa/pork ratio was good. The prices were very fair and the restaurant staff were very pleasant. I'd go again since it is hard to find a real decent tamale in this area.
(4)Chad W.
Best tamales without question! If you're in Mexicantown, skip the high prices and come here.
(4)Kyle K.
Come here to get tamales all the time with my family, we don't ever go anywhere else! If you are in Detroit and looking for a nice meal to share with your friends, come here to get a dozen tamales! You may want to get more, because they're additive. They are some of the best I have ever had, and remain one of my favorite things to eat!
(5)Mark M.
Go to spot for Mexican breakfast! Always fast, tasty and cheap! We have been hitting here for years before games or lunch and I'm finally yelping them! We even brought in a case of beer before a Lions game and they provided us glasses ( they're classy like that) The tamales are the best and available in qty for takeout, the many breakfast options are all awesome. I've always loved their chorizo but lately it's been the huevos rancheros...make sure you have a cookie for desert!
(5)Wanda S.
Great food, good service. I had the combination plate and it was awesome. Prices are very reasonable.
(5)Rachael B.
We have only been here once, but we will be going back. We went on a Sunday morning around 10:30 on the way to Motor City Casino. Since it was still fairly early, it wasn't crowded. We ordered the nachos, which were DELICIOUS. Probably the best nachos we've ever had! I ordered beef burritos, which were also good. They don't have a fountain pop machine, just cans. Which normally this would be a no no for me, but the food was so good I don't even care. Next time I want to order the pork stew burrito. I didn't notice that it was listed on the specials board until we left. Oh well. Can't wait to have another Evie's/Casino day.
(5)Steve C.
Top notch Mexican. Like grandma. If she was an excellent cook. Laid back. Don't go for the fancy decor. Stay for the well priced and Delicious food. Been here a few times over the years. The guacamole was fantastic and the beans were smooth as butter.
(5)Alvarezzza A.
Great Tamales, good service and great prices. Highly recommend over the other restaurants in the area!
(5)Michele B.
So yummy! So cheap! The tamales are 80 cents and delicious. The chimichanga was ok as well as the breakfast burrito. They pass out free cookies that were a yummy treat. It's a little family run business and it's worth it if you're in the area.
(4)Al M.
You gotta love Evie's...even on a drab, gray and rainy day in the bowels of Detroit's Mexican Town. Often overshadowed by the larger and more well known establishments of this ethnic neighborhood like Xochimilco, Mexican Village, El Zocalo or even Taqueria Lupita's, Evie's holds it own with great Mexican fare at ridiculously low prices. Their lunch special runs $ 4.25 for your choice of two tacos, burritos, enchilladas or tostatas along with a plate of Spanish rice and beans! Are you hosing me? ...$ 4.25! One could easily spend twice that for lunch at McD's. Like I said...you gotta love Evie's when doing the Vernor/Bagley area of southwest Detroit. Quatro estrellas all day long.
(4)Nichole V.
We been coming here for over 10 years. Hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants around. Not touristy which is nice for this strip. Prices are cheap and the food is always spot on. I highly recommend trying this place out!
(5)Ann Marie B.
The BEST food ever for Mexican Cuisine!! Simple, fresh and so delicious. Serves is friendly, efficient and fast. I highly recommend Evie's for breakfast, lunch or dinner!!
(5)Eldwin L.
You're a fool if you don't stop in the owner is here at 5 a.m. every morning making $1 breakfast burritos they always give you a free cookie with your meal and the portions are good sized you cannot say the word tamale in Detroit without thinking of evies three quarters of the tamales in Detroit come from here when people dispute how good the tamales are somewhere else you might be hard pressed to know you're really eating evies this place is a Southwest staple with no frills don't expect a fancy interior but if you want homely tex-mex cooking and a hug from the owner when you leave.! this is part of the restaurants and establishments that make Detroit great and kept it alive with the you can't knock me down attitude before it was cool to be here ( some people never left and just put in the 16 hour days that this city needed .) before going to a hop cat or sugar house go somewhere that deserves and need your business ....
(5)Mike M.
Awesome tamales. Flavorful and delicious. The chorizo breakfast burrito and salsas are the best breakfast when you're hungover.
(5)Mary J.
The best Tamales anywhere! We used to go to Mexican Town for our tamales. But, after getting dried out tamales on three separate occasions, we decided to try Evie's across the street! I am so glad we did! The tamales are made fresh and are delicious! You have to call ahead or they may not have any left for the day! That's because they don't make and store them , by the hundreds , in the freezer! Unlike their competitors the give you a fresh , delicious tamale. We will never go anywhere else!!!! In fact we are having them today!!!! Yummmm
(5)Maya T.
THEE best tamales in the world! I used to live in Detroit and am so thankful I found this gem when I was just a teenager. Now living back in Alaska, I make sure I stock up on a few dozen to bring back home with me or expect my sister, who still lives there, to bring/send me some!
(5)Tamara Y.
I've been picking up tamales for Christmas for the last 4 years from Evie's. Always delicious, but I must say, this year's bean and jalapeños are exceptional. I wouldn't consider any other place. Always friendly, even @ 5 AM.
(5)SJ C.
Very fast service. Try the spicy pork tamales. Better options require a call in advance.
(4)Gregory S.
Cheap, but you receive quality meals, and the service is excellent. Only thing is no bar, but hey it's always the party store. Some of the dishes aren't authentic, but they're still delicious. My girlfriend, who is of Mexican descent, and from Mexico said the tamales weren't any good, I enjoyed mine, but she would know, but if you're not worried about the authenticness ( my word, you can make one up as well) then go for it, everything on the menu is satisfying, and delicious, well besides wanting more steak, but with the sides any more meat will make you burst.
(4)David D.
Hand down the best Mexican food around! I've been coming here since I was a young child and have never been disappointed! It's a whole in the wall place but the food makes it worth your time. The family that owns and runs it are very friendly too.
(5)Alice A.
Yum. I love good Mexican food. And the lunch specials at Evie's are just amazing. The chips and salsa are above average - not the greatest but definitely tasty. The rice that comes with your plate is different, but delicious. I had the burritos and it had munster cheese melted on top which add a layer of depth. A great place to go for lunch, the service is quick. Plus who doesn't like a free cookie.
(4)Mark S.
Food was very good with large portions. Atmosphere is no frills and service was a little slow. Place is small, so it makes it a little crowded. People were very friendly.
(4)Urbn U.
for vegetarians Mexican food is usually nice because meat can usually be subbed with beans, when trying to order take out I was told they don't have beans and on top of trying to order a tamale without meat after the outright lie they assumed I didn't want the tamale (more than likely the reason they told me they don't have beans). I won't discredit the food but the service is simply horrendous.
(1)Jess G.
I have had just about everything on the menu here. I have never been disappointed. The tamales are the best around! If you are a first timer, I suggest getting a lunch, or dinner combo. Then, get some tamales to take home. For under $10.00 per person, you can get two meals.
(5)Bruce F.
Great carry out Tamales by the bag. The Pork Tamales are ready to go. You can special order others like Spicy Chicken or Bean & Jalapeno with a 2 hour notice. They have other menu items, but I just buy tamales by the dozen in a bag. Make sure you get the hot sauce that comes with it! You might try the Menudo Soup made of tripe and hominy to cure what ails you. 4 stars for the Tamales alone.
(4)Andrea C.
Great prices, great food! Love the Botanas, the tacos and the salsa is just spicy enough. The service is quick and friendly, and the prices are great! Always a treat to order from Evie's!
(4)Bob N.
Being hungry for breakfast and yearning for something different I decided to go to Evie's. Chicken enchiladas at 830 in the a.m. you say? You betcha, and were they yummy. Moist chicken gooey cheese and zuisa sauce. with some nice creamy refried beans, not the dried up glop you usually get. And of course if your at Evie's you have to get tamales. The Breakfast of Champions. Five stars because I've yet to have anything go wrong or taste bad. And compared to the local competition they are far and away better.
(5)Anthony B.
My Favorite Place in all of Mexican Town! Great Service, Amazing Food, and the Most Authentic taste this side of Mexico!
(5)Donna R.
When you are jonesing for something fast, fresh, and Mexican, this is it. I have only had tamales from here and they are heaven on earth. Grab a dozen bag of their tamales. Any kind. See how far you get without busting into the bag. We have gotten them and didnt make it past the service drive. We parked in a weedy pebbled lot behind Bagley and chowed them down like a couple of fools. Then we chased down the cart-pushing ice cream man for pina colada and banana Mexican popsicle-ice creams...my idea of fine dining. Aye carumba!
(5)Cara W.
AMAZING!!!! This is the second Sunday (in a row) my boyfriend and I have traveled to Evie's for b.fast. So good - fast - and CHEAP plus they give you a free cookie!!!! How much better can it get. The staff is friendly - Love it. Get there.
(5)john s.
best Mexican breakfast around. Great menudo- just get lots of onions in- and egg dishes are all good. Then you get a Mexican cookie to wrap it up
(4)RE A.
Tamales fit for a king. Fresh and frozen available usually. Food is delicious texmex style. Inexpensive great family take aways. Kids welcomed.
(4)Dea A.
It might be criminal to say this, but I've had better tamales. I actually like the bakery's tamales better (just down Bagley). But you can buy a dozen tamales to go, if you want something in particular (like spicy pork or chicken) call ahead (before 12 or 2pm I can't remember) in order to have them ready for you. They also have some on hand that are already frozen. The hot sauce that goes with them is great, spicy and fresh. The tamales themselves are a little on the dry side. $6 for a dozen tamales plus 3 hot sauce containers.
(3)Andrea C.
I'm hard to please when it comes to finding good Mexican food, and after eating here I'm very impressed...and full! Great portion sizes, rice and beans are top-notch, excellent salsa, and the chimichangas I ordered were delicious. A+ Evie's Tamales!
(5)Wally S.
I was on a quest for enlightenment. I went to Evie's looking for tamales, but found something much more. I was told by many that Evie's had some of the better tamales in Detroit's Mexican Town. I was afraid that it was to close to the touristy area of M-town to have even a chance of having good food. I was wrong. Although I never did get a chance to try any tamales, I dove into Evie's lunch special of the day, Carnitas and forgot what a tamale was. Carnitas is a succulent piece of pork that has been marinated and then slow roasted to perfection. Evies serves you up to of these boneless gems each about the size of a softball. The crusty skin explodes with flavor. The best way to enjoy the carnitas is to pull the pork and place a large amount into the warm folds of a corn tortilla. This is something that needs to be experienced. top it off with some salsa if you wish, but it isn't needed. The lunch special also came with rice and beans that were pretty much the same as every other rice and refried beans you've ever had. Do yourself a favor; skip the rice and beans and you'll save a few dollars on your lunch, but you'll still be plenty full. Some day I'll get back to Evie's to try their tamales, but for now Evie's is my go-to restaurant to get carnitas.
(4)Anjelica A.
One of my favorite spots, and not just because my family lives around the block! I've been coming to Evie's for at least 10 years (more, now that I think about it) and it has never disappointed. Their tamales are the obvious choice, and they are delicious and cheap (I believe .60 per, last time I was there). The rest of their menu is great, too - I recommend their botanas, which are huge and very filling. As for the atmosphere: this is a smallish place, not at all commercial and therefore it will not have the styled appearance of other places. However, there are decorations and it is very clean. The service is always fast and friendly.
(5)Tamara Y.
This is the best place for tamales, hands down. Granted, you're not coming to this place for the ambiance. It's a mom and pop shop with mismatched plastic table cloths, in a constant state of chaos. I would say that the chips and salsa are average, maybe a bit above average. The hot salsa is definitely the better of the two. The tamales are excellent and the prices are ridiculously low. I usually order the tamale meal ($4.50), and get one of each variety -- chicken, pork, and spicy pork. The meal also comes with rice and beans. The rice and beans are ok, nothing to get excited about. (Seriously, though -- does anyone EVER get worked up over the rice and beans??) And then there are the tamales ........ what can I say? They are heaven. A good meat to masa ratio, and the masa is tender and delicious, not rubbery or dense. The service is pretty hit or miss, largely depending on the amount of chaos. If the place is jamming, and there's a long carry out line, you better enjoy your beverages and chips and salsa, because you're not likely to get a refill.
(5)Harper V.
Order the menudo! My 92 year old Uncle says theirs is the only menudo that tastes like what he grew up eating in Saltillo and south Texas. The chilaquiles are awesome. And, of course, people come from everywhere in the Detroit metro area to get their tamales for the holidays.
(5)Sandra B.
I really like Evie's for Mexican in general. I agree that their tamales are a little dry (unless you put chili on them which does improve them drastically). I personally think that Evie's makes an excellent Mexican Sandwich - if you have never tried it, you should. I like their enchilladas as well. Take note: no liquor license - which is fine by me, but every now and then, you do need a good margarita or three.
