Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

El Rancho is a family tradition of mine. We come here each time my sister visits from LA (sometimes twice: divorced parents, lol) but despite the place reserved in my heart due to novelty, it isn't a place I'd go to if I was looking for a meal that tantalized my taste buds. No, this is the place to go to for quality, yet not quite intriguing "home food". And if you take a look around, I think most people agree. It's standard Mexican American fare served with a friendly and warm smile that makes anything you eat taste comforting. Most patrons come with family or friends and the hospitality of the entire staff in undoubtedly what brings return patrons. Sure, their food is good, but it isn't authentic Mexican and it's not even the best Mexican American in the area. I would highly recommend their breakfast, however, since it seems like they have a larger menu than other nearby establishments. Additionally, it's a nice buffer restaurant for those of you desiring Mexican without jumping all the way into taquerias.

OK, el rancho. i feel bad for you. i came here on cinco de mayo. they had good cocktails and good happy hour prices. they had a really good botana and it was covered with oozy cheese and lots of good fresh veggies, including avocados. the chips were just horrible. they tasted like old supermarket chips. the salsas were boring. when a salsa is boring, its the worst thing you can say. the other food my friends ordered really weren't very good. the problem is, i have at least three really great restaurants within walking (or a short drive) distance. those restaurants serve fresh, interesting mexican food. love, juston

I've been hearing about El Rancho for a while from friends that work nearby. They swear by it. We had a late lunch today and both had egg dishes. POSITIVES: The chilaquiles were quite good. The eggs were perfectly cooked. Still moist - not cooked to death like many other places. My wife's nopalitos were similarly well prepared BUT had quite a bit of cheese thrown on top. I've not been to another place that put cheese on eggs with cactus. The restaurant itself is spotless and had a nice kind of casual feel. The service was good. They have a liquor license. They also have their own large parking lot behind the restaurant so you don't have to park on Vernor. NEGATIVES: The chips seemed a little old. The 2 salsas were just OK. I've gotten used to the radish/salsa/chips at places like Los Altos or Los Corrales ===== I'll definitely go again and rounding up to 4 stars.

A decent neighborhood place that caters to the American Mex Palate. Being a former Energy Efficiency Employee Ive been in the Kitchen to do some upgrades and It's one of the Cleanest Ive ever seen. Thank God. Because their Super Nachos are out of this world good!!!! They have a huge menu and their pretty quick and theyre fried ice cream is pretty good.

I used to go there a lot about 15 years ago and just went back today. I was delighted at the authenticity and simplicity of their food that made me love the place. I used to get huevo rancheros but this time went for margaritas and tamales. DELICIOSO!!!!

Take-Out Taco Review Total Average Taco Score: 6 (low 5.5 high 6.5) type: large restaurant price: $2.50 ea. (seems like A LOT - I wonder if they double charged me...) 6 - atmosphere: ehhhhh - I kind of imagine it like if a Denny's were in Mexico? Some sparse Mexican decorations and a brick archway - but mostly brown vinyl booths. Was completely empty on a Wednesday night.Nice murals on the outside though! 5 - salsa to go: red and chunky - tasted a lot like Pace 5.5 - carne asada (steak): chewy - only flavors are meat and pepper 6.5 - pollo (chicken): on the drier side, but good texture between thick and tender - slightly marinated N/A - al pastor (pork): they don't have pork tacos I'm nonplussed with the tacos and the salsa really turned me off. --------------- Notes for list: - I go in blind - no reviews no nothin' - just me and my own palate - parading down the Vernor Hwy strip (and some offshoots) - ranked out of 10: 10 being the best street tacos from Mexico (in small towns and big cities) - short and to the point: sorry, no fancy artful writing - a girl's gotta plow through these puppies!

Ive been going to this place for many years. Its always been good to me. I would definitly recommend this place. They will make your chorizo And eggs with egg whites also. Great place for breakfast lunch or dinner.

Great food, amazing service. My favorite is their breakfast. Its the best mexican breakfast in the city for your money. Staff is friendly and helpful, and management is always there greeting customers.

Delicious margaritas and homemade salsa...why isn't this place packed?!

I'd give El Rancho a 4.5 for breakfast and a 2 for lunch. I've been there for breakfast more than once and they have deals for $5 that is more food than you can eat. The nopalitos and chilaquiles are reliably rich and delicious Lunch is just as good of a deal, but the food simply isn't as good. I've only gone twice at lunch, thinking the first time was a fluke, but I think considering the other options in the neighborhood, it's just ok. Go for breakfast and you won't regret it.

I walk by El Rancho at least once a week when I'm on my way to lunch. I finally had the chance to visit with some co-workers a group of 6 at noon. We were seated quickly. The chips were decent as well as the salsa. I was surprised when the soup came out. It was good, but one of my group members could not eat it because they do not eat meat. I choose the lunch special of chicken enchiladas, which was pretty good. I have had better in Mexicantown though. It has a nice location and the price is very reasonable.

I can honestly say I have never been a big fan of this place. Yesterday's visit for a late lunch, just sealed the deal. Let me say that I entered with an open mind, thinking that perhaps I had previously misjudged. We arrived around 4PM finding only two other tables with diners. I viewed at least four waitstaff meandering around. After ten minutes elapsed finally someone brought us menus. Then another ten minutes, chips only arrived. We actually had to ask for the salsa, what is up with this place? I made the mistake of ordering the shrimp cocktail. Half of the shrimp were overcooked. My S.O. ordered the combo plate which he enjoyed. I sampled the tostada. I do admit the tostada was tasty, but the frijoles where cold. Why? Normally they are warmed up a bit. Let me not forget to mention the flies , yes I said flies, that I spotted buzzing the main dining area. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, this occurred on the way out. Needless to say I will never return!

I have been too many restaurants around the world to include Mexicans, I have actually eat food made in Mexico. I would not recommend this restaurant anyone expressly Mexicans. The clientele was of low class as was the food they searched the sauce served with the chips was obviously made in New York City probably from the dump.

Excellent service. The food is OK...nothing spectacular.

2.5. :-/ I was hoping it would be better. It came highly recommended to me by my friend from "the res." But I think the later at night you go, the worse it gets. My chile relleno came out a sopping mess and not very spicy at all. The chips were somewhat stale. The salsa, however, was quite good. And I got to watch a tele-novella while waiting for my food so that obviously improved my mood. I'm sure I'll be back and I just hope I can justify the 0.5 star I've rounded up to.

I always order shrimp with a red sauce on a quesadilla. I don't know what cheese combo they use but it's great. My staff meeting are usually held here and they seem to love the the combo plates they get. This place is always clean and your waiters are always on the ball!

We're at the point, in our quest to try every restaurant in Mexicantown/Southwest, where we're just going to places to check them off the list, so I didn't really have high expectations of El Rancho. With that said, I'm going to take a moment to complain about the rating system. There desperately needs to be 1/2 stars available. Seriously. I'd happily give El Rancho 2.5 stars because while, yes, my experience is "Meh. I've experienced better.", I truly believe that this may be everything that some people look for in a restaurant, but I'm not quite willing to say it's "A-OK" for me. I digress. On to the review... When we walked in, it was kinda like walking into the 70's. It definitely seems like a place that could and should be hoppin' at times, with the hanging Corona piñatas, and general Mexican/southwest motif. I kinda wish, just once, we'd walk into a place during the week (besides Xochis) for dinner and have it be lively and energetic. I can't remember the last time that happened. A couple other tables (of locals) were seated after we'd been there for about 1/2 an hour, which apparently was their cue to turn on the music and then things seemed a tiny bit more lively. As for the food, which is what really matters, I mean, based on the other reviews, it's no surprise that I wasn't blown away. The chips were good, but the salsas were nearly unforgivable. The mild may as well have come out of a jar, and the hot was bitter and just totally uninspiring. It didn't stop me from eating them, because we waited a long time for our food to come. We'd ordered the queso flameado as an appetizer, but everything came out at once. For my meal, I ordered the Taco Combination Plate, which consisted of three tacos (one beef, one chicken and one bean ) with beans and rice for $9.99 with the cheese. My companion ordered 3 tacos a la carte, which were a hefty $2.59 a piece, plus $1.00 for cheese. Yowza. That's fairly outrageous pricing to me. There was a little chili pepper next to the queso flameado on the menu, indicating that it was "Hot and Spicy". The flavor and texture were okay, but it was not spicy... in the slightest. It was a generous portion, but it should have been for the price. Once again, the curious three tortillas, rather than four, came with it. I don't get that. My taco dinner was totally passable Tex-Mex. The deep-friend corn tortillas were super crispy and greasy, but they had good flavor. The beef was ground, the chicken shredded, and the beans refried. I added some of the queso flameado to them, to add some flavor to their otherwise blandness, since I wasn't really interested in the salsa. The beans and rice were actually the highlight of the plate. I'd break down my rating to this: Atmosphere/Decor - 3.5 stars (this is in comparison only to other places in the area) Service - 4 stars Food - 1.5 stars Likeliness to Return - 0 stars It's just another one checked off the list. I can't say they have nothing to offer, but certainly nothing to offer me when there are so many amazing and, more importantly, less expensive options.

Loved the chips fresh out of the oven and the hot salsa. I got the enchiladas, which were pretty good and had a yummy frozen margarita. The wait staff was also very nice and friendly.

It makes me sad to have to write this review this used to be one of the most popular restaurants in Detroit a few years ago. I stopped in on my way to a concert the other night with my husband the only about three people in the entire restaurant on a Friday night around 7. I should have taken that as the first sign. It took about 20 minutes for a waitress to come tired able to take our order. My husband ordered cheese quesadillas and I ordered chicken taquitos. When the food arrives and was literally so much last how to type that it filled up an entire empty plate. My husband said his dinner was borderline okay. My taquitos were so over cooked what black on the ends and sharksof black chicken inside. The rice had a burnt taste to it and the refried beans for extremely bland. We were waiting for our waitress so we could get refills on our drinks couldn't figure out where she had went I stopped in to the restroom and found her, she had been in the restroom talking on her phone. I could not believe our dinner there this used to be one of the most popular restaurants when I lived in southwest always packed on a Friday night....It's very sad to see how things change.

Honestly my favorite place to have Mexican food. The food is delicious and the staff is always great. Fast and very courteous, usually never have to ask for napkins or refills. When the food is good the food is gooooood. However there have been a couple of times when the food just seemed off, the enchiladas had a different sauce than normal, and the caldo de res not as flavorful as usual. Not sure what happened those times, maybe cook called off but overall usually a good experience.

This is a hard review to write because, first and foremost, the service is among the best in SouthWest and the owners keep the joint sparkling. I really appreciate the work that the servers are doing. And even more, the manager is one of the friendliest guys in town. I've had several really interesting conversations with him about food, local politics, and international relations, just while waiting for some to-go orders. He's a super guy to meet and get to know. Unfortunately, over the course of many visits and samplings of the menu, I've just lost interest in the food. I will credit it for being big portions and very very low prices. But the quality of all the dishes just comes short of being anything more than average. The sauces TEND to be a little bit weak. The salsas TEND to lack a little kick. The meats TEND to be missing just a little flavor and texture. It's all very subtle, but over time and in comparison to the other contenders in the vicious arena that is Mexican food in SW, the wonderful and enchanting staff and manager could not ultimately account for the lackluster food. This is particularly disappointing given that they are one of only TWO places in SW, to my knowledge, that serve sopes! i love sopes! but the sopes at El Rancho, while pretty good, are just not quite at the level of making your head spin. Nevertheless, if you've never tried sopes before, I think it's the best thing on the menu and it's worth visiting El Rancho at least once to have them. You'll be excited to discover how great this dish is. If you're new to Mexicantown, I wouldn't start here. If you're overly familiar with the line-up along Vernor and you're looking for something new just for the sake of difference, El Rancho will do just fine, but you won't be writing home about it. With just a LITTLE re-working of many of their standard dishes, I think they could re-birth themselves as a more serious contender - like a little phoenix of guacamole. Up the flavors. Up the ingredients. Up the preparations. And you'd have a devoted return customer of me. Until then, it's dropped too far down to the middle of my go-to list that I barely notice it anymore.

El Rancho is good without being super. I do crave it occasionally and have eaten there quite a lot. Quite a few different shrimp dishes. I've had shrimp with peanut butter mole, shrimp with a green sauce, and these dried shrimp patties with nopales. They're all tasty, but the mole and the patties are super-heavy, greasy really. The green sauce is kind of novel; I don't see in on all that many menus. Nothing wrong with the rice and beans, but they're not all that special either. A good place to check out sometime, anyway. (And I should note the good service and prices as well.)

Yes! This place is definitely worth the drive from Ann Arbor or Suburbia. It is located right next to a Mexican grocery store, which is also definitely worth a visit (cheap avocados and Jarritos (!)). The food here is super super fresh, and the service is amazing and bilingual. Order a large side of Guacamole, and it comes in some stone masonry bowl/statue. The quantities are large, and I can't overstress how wonderful the food tastes. It is not the cheapest, but it's not unreasonable, and probably would vie for the title of best Mexican food in the city.

Some of Detroit's BEST Mexican food can be found at El Rancho! The menu has something for everyone and the prices are reasonable. Be sure to try the Botana, it's one of my personal favorites :)
