This place is special. They make you feel like they really valued my business. Each staffer was sooooo kind. Not just nice, but friendly. And the bagels were perfect. Generous with cream cheese and creative with flavors. Big, clean space to hang out, work, relax. Love it.

Food rules, place rules, people rules, it's the way to go if you want some bagels. Super friendly people! Buncha fuckin' sweethearts with good coffee and killer bagels. They keep a clean shop too. Go there, get full! If you don't, ya blew it and are blowin' it.

Friendly service, great atmosphere(love the brick work), and great bagels. What are you waiting for!? Go get your bagels.

Pricey, but very good. Consistently good bagels and sandwiches. I wish they had better coffee, but that doesn't stop me from going regularly. I love the bagel breakfast sandwiches. Great service and great food.

Amazing. Best. Bagels. In. Detroit. I took my family of 6, which included 4 preschool aged children and had a great experience. The bagels are perfect. The quality and care is obvious and the brick and mortar place they've done up is a great addition to town. We got a dozen assorted which were all great but I recommend the bacon, cheese and egg sandwich with avocado.

The DIB gets Dib's stamp of approval. The rosemary/olive oil/sea salt bagel is a winner! Very cool spot. Will be back again.

The best bagels I've ever had, hands down. I didn't even think I could enjoy boiled bread this much. I just ordered 2 dozen of these to go for my office. I had a designated pick up time to make sure I didn't get stuck in a line and could continue on with my day. I arrived and everything was ready to go, no line. The best part out of all of it was that the bagels were still warm or they warmed them, I don't know which. I've never come across warm bagels in bulk so this is pretty astonishing and amazing. The bagels themselves were delicious. I had a rosemary sea salt but I heard from my coworkers everyone enjoyed the other flavors as well. My favorite part out of everything is that they have multiple non-cream cheese spreads like hummus and lentil. I've been waiting for more places to incorporate some of these healthier non- dairy options. People may be lactose intolerant or simply not like it. This place gives you multiple options to please a group or individual. They cost more than your average bagel but are 100% worth it. I can't wait to try one of their sandwiches.

Great place to go on a Sunday morning for a bagel and to do some work. Very well decorated and nice vibe overall. I have yet to try the bagel dog, but everything is solid.

Fantastic bagels (the kind that are too good to toast) and great coffee, you can tell they put a lot of care into the food they create and the space is really nice. They have a good amount of seating which is nice as it was quite busy on a Saturday morning and I always appreciate not having to wait for a table.

Just stopped in for a (baker's) dozen this morning, and had to eat one the second I got home because they smelled so good in the car. These are bagels done just the way I like them, not too big, not too doughy, the outside has a little crunch and the inside is perfectly chewy.

Late December 2013, some friends and I headed up north to the chilly winter woods. The DIB had some leftover veggie chili, which we carted up to the Keweenaw peninsula and ate later that evening in the sub-zero temps. It was incredibly delicious, and I'd recommend it to meat-lovers and veggie-lovers alike. The DIB's bagels are a really nice consistency (good crust, chewy on the inside) and hold their own with many toppings, but you can't really beat an everything bagel with cream cheese. Keep up the good work, guys.

Great bagels and all-around experience. The DIB has perfected the art of bagel-making. I have had my fair share of bagels in NYC and the DIB bagels are right at the top. The prices are very reasonable given the quality of the ingredients and the conditions and values the owner promotes. The DIB and others are doing cool things in the Detroit/Corktown area. If you are up for a great bagel and want to support a local business that is doing cool things for the city of Detroit, then DIB is the place to visit.

Massively overpriced and be prepared to wait a half hour for anything even if there's nobody in line to order before you. Can't believe I bought into the hype. Find better suppliers. Bagel + Cream Cheese: $3. Lox: $5. Capers, tomato, red onion: 50¢ each. Add it all up and thats $9.50. So why is a sandwich that combines all of those $11 and only shows up with one thin single sheet of lox, no more than half an ounce? Garbage. Avoid.

Noam K.
Got the goat cheese & roasted beet on an everything bagel. Definitely delicious. Something about $6.50 for a bagel sandwich seems expensive, but when you realize it's just as filling and delicious as any other type of sandwich, the price seems just right. Great decor too. Lots of natural light. Go DIB!

My son and I really enjoyed our visit to the Detroit institute of bagels. The atmosphere was very inviting and made us want to hang out awhile, I thought the pricing was fair and everything was fresh and tasty. I would highly recommend it to anyone and we will definitely return.

Bagels with the absolute correct chewiness. The Sandwiches are life-changing! I cannot eat lousy bagels ever again. Worth a trip. Support Detroit!!

We used to have to drive to Southfield to get REAL Bagels. FINALLY Detroit had them. So far all of the bagels we've tried are really good and the flavored cream cheeses are equally as good. We haven't tried much else...we just want a real bagel once in a while...not the bread rolls that you get at Einstein's. My only problem (which is why I gave them 4 stars, not 5) is the price. Last time we went in I grabbed us about four bagels with some different cream cheeses and the price was astronomical. I guess we saved on time and gas though since we didn't have to drive to Southfield!

Still delicious......but with more flare! : ) Love the bold new flavors they were offering this past weekend: Cheddar Bacon Blueberry Lime Rosemary Sea Salt I tried their zesty Blueberry Lime bagel, which screamed summer with the cool citrus flavor of lime and the bursting flavors of fresh baked blueberries. Also tried the Rosemary Sea Salt bagel, which was very aromatic and it had a rustic focaccia-ness flavor to it; the rosemary and olive oil were def enhanced by the sprinkles of sea salt, simply delicious! BE SURE TO CHECK OUT DIB AT EASTERN MARKET ON TUESDAYS FROM 11-1

i had the rosemary sea salt bagel. there is no salt on it, that i can find. it's tasty but pricey

1. Avoid the less than positive reviews especially given the fact that they were made during the growing pains stage of a new business. e.g. training staff, ironing out the kinks, etc. 2. Yes they are more expensive than some other bagel places but this is a great example of you get what you pay for. The ingredients are high quality and you can tell. For example the blueberry bagel is made with real large fresh blueberries.Their bagels are made the way they should be and are slightly crispy on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside! This place also pays its staff fair wages which equates to better customer service and well made products. 3. Try the RosemaryOlive Oil and Sea Salt bagel, the Bacon Cheddar bagel with Jalapeno cream cheese and the Blueberry Bagel. 4. On second thought, try everything because you will not be dissapointed. 5. Finally- while they do not have official "gift cards" the management created one on the spot for my co-worker! Now that is an example of excellent customer service.

A-OK - exxxxxcept my bagel was SUPER messy and when asking questions regarding which bagel would be best, the staff wasn't very friendly. I think that contributed to the issues I had with the insides going all over the place when I bit down into a hard bagel - CREAM CHEESE EVERYWHERE! However, the taste was there. I'm also giving 3 stars on the price - two bagels and two coffees were around $25 - that is extremely high for a breakfast sandwich on a bagel. Can get much cheaper breakfast of great quality several other places in the D.

I was so excited when I heard DIB was going to be in my town last weekend. Red Hook was hosting a pop up event with Anthology Coffee and DIB, so I decided to check it out. They said there would be a limited number of bagels, so I got my ass out of bed extra early on a Sunday to try one of these bagels. It was not necessary to get there so early, but so worth it to try their bagels. They had two offerings: rosemary olive oil sea salt, and cranberry orange zest. I am not a huge fan of dried fruits, so I went with the rosemary. Wow! It was so fragrant and delicious. The rosemary smelled amazing and the sea salt was not too strong like many salt bagels can be. I wish I could have bought more than 2...I would have had it for lunch and dinner!! I can't wait to try more of their flavors. They all sound very interesting. Hopefully there will be more of these events around town so everyone can try some of this deliciousness! Good luck to DIB! I hope you guys can get a storefront soon!

Terrible, inedible bagels. Tiny with the "freshness" of teething bagels for babies or dogs. My 7 year old asked if it was okay not to eat anymore because the bagel was hurting his teeth. Lenders frozen bagels are better. Detroit needs better - and cheaper - alternatives.

Toasted sesame seed bagel with STRAWBERRY CREAM CHEESE hmmmmm and a coffee (with a little cream and sugar please) and I'm a happy camper! That's the winning trifecta right there. I've eyed other people's bagel sandwiches before and they look fantastic but I can't stray from my winning combo. I love it so. They have a good variety of bagels to choose from, all the standards plus some more unique flavors they make in smaller batches such as jalapeno cheddar and rosemary olive oil. It's a great space, very bright and cheery. Decent amount of seating in the back and front of the restaurant. I prefer the seats in front since it puts you right in front of their expansive windows and you can get a nice dose of sunlight with a view, albeit not the most exciting view. Only con I can think of is sometimes the wait can be long depending on what time of day you get here. I know I've spent a good ten minutes in line before waiting to order when there was maybe four people in front of me and then another five minutes to get my bagel. You would hope for a little faster service for a bagel place. Once I got my bagel though, all was forgiven.

Bagels in my belly Don't need jam or jelly Just a slab of schmear Oh bagel please come here Bursting with flavor, salt and a crisp If you like bagels put DIB on your list Filled with egg or cheese They'll do it how you please On Sundays there is a long ass line Bagels this good take their time Just be patient, grab a seat and enjoy I hope you trust my review, even though I'm a goy

Are you kidding me? These have to be the best bagels in metro Detroit! First time here and I loved the Cheddar and Jalapeno bagel. These are not oversized chain bagels, and are not overpowering on the flavors (i.e.: salt bagels with enough salt to melt an iceberg). The cheddar flavor was fresh and the jalapeno was just enough to give it great flavor and the slightest bite. The coffee is amazing, the atmosphere is cool, the staff was very friendly, and the location is perfect. Even for someone like me who doesn't work downtown, the two minute side trip off the freeway is worth it. I love finding new "go-to" spots and this is it for bagels.

As I like to call my girlfriend high maintenance, this is a high maintenance type place. I guess I'm so used to going to New York Bagel or Brueggers and paying a certain amount. We paid quite a bit to have two small but tasty bagel sandwiches, a coffee, and Snapple (or whatever Jess B ordered. With tip, I was in for 25 dollars. For this kind of money, I really thought I'd be blown away but was not. The bagels are crispy and are very good but I just think the prices are way too high for me to want to come back. I know it is very popular but the day before we went to the diner down the road and had two amazing breakfast and coffee for 15, including tip. I think maybe I'm not hip enough to fully appreciate this place.

I've been meaning to update for awhile now--DIB had just recently opened when I wrote that review and my lone complaint was that the bagels seemed a tad too hard. This is no longer the case! The last several bagels I've eaten at DIB have been perfectly chewy on the inside, and best of all, the everything bagels are everything'd on BOTH sides! Whaaaaaat?! I sure could go for one of those beet sandwiches right about now...

I used to eat a lot of bagel sandwiches for breakfast but haven't really found a place in Detroit that makes them in a way I like til now!! Bf always gets the lox bagel (the smaller portion) and enjoys it a lot. I always get the bacon cheese egg sandwich on a toasted Rosemary, olive oil, and sea salt bagel. We've learned that toasted bagels are much better than untoasted or even half toasted. And the sea salt was too salty for me, so I just scraped off the sea salt crystals!! Coffee is also yummy, and they sell iced coffee from anthology. Love this place and my bagel sandwich!! All DIB needs to do now is sell mango/peach/strawberry slushes/juices and they'll be tied for first place with my fave bagel place in California! Oh. And service is friendly. Place is clean and bright. You can sit on their patio or inside. I've never been lucky enough to score a patio seat, so I just sit in front of their huge windows and stare out at Michigan Ave!

Went for lunch today, I got the roasted red pepper bagel sandwich on an everything bagel. It was great! All of the vegetables tasted incredibly fresh. I've never had a sandwich like this at a bagel shop before. I also got a half dozen bagels and a spicy lentil spread to go. I made a bagel for dinner with the lentil spread and I was very impressed, I've never been to a bagel shop as unique and all around impressive as Detroit Institute of Bagels.

Next to the Lodge freeway. Parking lot in the back of the building. Went early Sunday morning and fortunately not busy yet. Cheerful wait staff. Bagels are on the smaller side but are delicious! Crisp outside and chewy inside. Had a jalapeño bagel with egg and cheese. Reasonable price at $3.50. They take cash and all major credit cards. Bagel sandwich comes in an auto parts bin - very Detroit... Have Anthology coffee and a variety of other beverages along with free water. They recycle!!! The interior is clean and trendy. Very hipster. Will be back!

My partner and I have breakfast here almost every other weekend. When I dream of breakfast sandwiches, it's the ones at DIB that are most prominent. As a cream cheese fan(atic), I am totally in love with their Herb schmear. Eggs are made to order NOT IN A MICROWAVE!!!!!!! Hell yeah DIB. Keep on being perfect. Only thing stopping me from doing 5 stars is that I wish they had iced coffee on tap or otherwise in addition to the cold brew they get from Anthology. Also, it's kind of pricey, but so delicious I don't mind. Plus, I'd rather pay more and support a small biz than get a gross bagel from some larger corporation.

Got to try their brand new bagel sandwich that they're officially rolling out this Friday called the Fish & Chips. The smoked lox, herb cream cheese, and salt & vinegar chips inside were AMAZING. I highly suggest getting this on a Rosemary & Olive oil bagel. I think I might just get another one before I leavelol Follow my food account @motorcitymunchers

They make a decent bagel that totally satisfies your carb cravings. Their breakfast and lunch bagel sandwiches are on point - the eggs are made fresh, the sausages are tasty, as are all of the other ingredients they use. While these bagels are not quite as good as the bagels on the east coast (yes, I'm totally biased), they are still the best in the area. I usually stop here after a workout at Detroit Tough, and grab a cup of their coffee. Oh yes, they serve some of that Anthology coffee-goodness here, as well as Anthology's cold brew (check the fridge). The space is also very open and full of natural light. A great place to stop for a bite to eat, or even catch up on some work.

Lived here every morning for about a month straight during finals... Not a single regret. The light and complete vibrance of the place is perfect; feels like home. Always get a sesame toasted with scallion cream cheese, and their coffee is amazing. If you ever need a good hideout in the morning to read or get work done, this little slice of heaven is the place to do so

Perfectly sized bagels. The DIB knows how to make a bagel sandwich, too. Can't wait to go back to grab a few bagels and some housemate cream cheese to take back to Ann Arbor with me.

I'm sorry, but if anyone tries to tell you there are better bagels in Detroit, they're crazy. Someone brought in bagels from DIB for our office, and I've been hooked ever since. I actually get angry when it's bagel day and someone brings them in from anywhere other than DIB. That's how greedy I am now that I won't eat a free bagel from anywhere else anymore after having DIB. They're not the disgusting, over-sized bagels that could feed a small family like every other place in the area. They also have amazing flavored cream cheeses that I could eat with a spoon. If you want to know why I'm freaking out over these bagels, go in and get a rosemary one with jalapeno cream cheese. It's the shit. I could put that jalapeno cream cheese on pretty much everything I eat. My coworkers also love the breakfast sandwiches, especially the lox, but it's not my thing, so I've never had it. The only con I can think of is that it's a little more expensive than other places in the area. But whatever, I'll pay an extra $0.50-$1.00 more per bagel for the quality of it and the cream cheese.
(5)
Rachel O.
The best bagels I've had in a very long time. Also the cream cheese. Just YUM. They have a great selection of house made sandwiches breakfast and lunch style. You can beat them on any of the bagels they have available. there is lots of seating in a sunny dining room area. The atmosphere was clean, laid back, but professional and fun. I enjoyed all the other customers as well. This is a great little location that I would love to visit more more often.
(5)
Devin S.
Good selection of bagels. Only complaint is there are not enough kinds. I wish they had a salt stick and more salt on their salt bagels. Other then that great location and cool building. Great service also. I'll definitely be coming back!

The Detroit Institute of Bagels manages to serve amazing, specialty/gourmet food without any of the pretension that normally comes with amazing, gourmet/specialty food. The Rosemary, olive oil and sea salt bagel might be the best bagel I've ever had (and I'm from New York), and their butternut squash tahini is the best idea you never had (I could probably eat a jar of it with a spoon). The store is light and has good seating, if you want to plant yourself there with friends or work. The coffee is also really solid. A+

Stopped in here for breakfast. I got the bacon, egg and cheese on a plain bagel. Overall it was good, not great. Cost was $5.50 which is ok, but again not great. This is Detroit after all, not NYC. The place tries to hard to come off as "trendy" in my book and for a min, you might think you are a hipster until you realize the view from the windows in the front looks out onto homeless people and a car wash. The place is clean and they do have their own parking lot which was an added bonus.

Really loved this place! I want to come back when we can spend more time. We got our breakfast to go today. There was a line less than 20 minutes after the doors opened but it moved fast. The employees were very helpful and friendly. My favorite part of the store is the stairs just inside the door, I love the greenery!! I had the bacon cheddar bagel with herb cream cheese...super yum! Warning: there was as much cream cheese as there was bagel!! Personal preference, but next time I will ask them to go easy on the cream cheese! Hubby got the avocado, egg and cheese bagel sandwich and it was extremely messy. Might be okay if you're dining in, but if you're planning on eating it as you drive grab lots of extra napkins! I think this place will be insanely popular for years to come! Nice job guys!!

Didn't actually go in but I did happen to catch a pop up kitchen in the courtyard. This was by far one of the coolest, random things that I have done in the D. Check this out: tinyurl.com/q9ty45g . Keep up the great work! You are what makes Detroit so awesome.

Wow this was a real treat! We purchased specialty bagels and yes they are worth the up charge! The coffee was good and the atmosphere was terrific, very upscale yet comfortable. Bring your friends and family.

Who doesn't like bagels? Personally, I love bagels and was happily surprised to find the DIB offers several vegan selections. Hurray for vegan bagels that taste like regular bagels! The sandwiches are creative and the bagels are the kind you savor. Large outdoor area that's great to hang out in when the weathers nice. Friendly staff and perfect location. I would give the DIB 5 stars if they had a better tea selection. Because bagels and hot tea seem to go together for me. I wish they had more than just two name brand bags. Where are the Detroit tea makers?!

Not a bad bagel place. The things I like most are that this is a local shop with a hip atmosphere inside. The service is good and the staff are friendly and helpful. There is also a very cool outdoor seating area with colorful brick wall murals and big tables. With all of this in mind, I'm happy to pay a little more as long as the bagels are up to snuff. However, for my taste (and based on multiple visits), I found the bagels a fairly tough/chewy. Typically I've found that fresh bagels are much softer inside, which makes me wonder how often they are baking new bagels. Also, as others have mentioned, the "hole" in the middle of the bagel is rather large. Generous toppings (cream cheese, etc) help mitigate some of this, however. Overall, a cool scene and passable (albeit expensive) bagels.
(3)
Mike N.
Only reason it was not 5 stars is I feel almost 16 bucks for a bagel sandwich and large coffee is a bit excessive. Cost aside, it was the absolute best bagel sandwich I've had in a long time. I had the salmon bagel #7. Best cream cheese with a touch of lemon zest, and the bagel itself was awesome (crunch but not too crunchy) and tons of salmon. I will certainly go back, no matter the cost because it was that good.

I grew up outside of NYC, so I have high expectations for a bagel. Unfortunately, I moved to DC a decade ago and bagels (as well as pizza, for that matter) are not something that this place has mastered. I don't even eat bagels anymore as a result. So, when I looked up places to eat in Detroit on TripAdvisor and the Detroit Institute of Bagels came up with a reviewer saying it tasted like New York I knew that I had to make it there, in my less than 24 hour trip that included a wedding. So, I woke up the morning after the wedding and I hiked it to the DIB for a bagel. And, it was AMAZING!!! I wanted an onion bagel, but they didn't have those. A little disappointing, but I love an everything bagel, too, so I went with that. It was so good. The texture was perfect. I just got it toasted with cream cheese and for the 10 minutes it took me to eat it I was in heaven. I bought a bag of a dozen to take home with me!!! So, anyone who can enjoy the simple things in life--like a perfectly crafted bagel--should check this place out, if you happen to be in "The D", as they call it.

THE BEST BAGELS IN THE CITY! They remind me of delicious NYC bagels. They are so full of flavor. I love the sandwich options with the bagels. I opted for egg, cheese, and bacon on a cheddar jalapeño bagel and my husband had lox on an everything bagel. My coffee was hot and roasty. We had to grab some bagels to go on the way out. I only wish they were sold at more locations in the area, and dare I say, the 'burbs too.

super fresh and delicious bagels here. Get there early to avoid a line and get the pick of whatever flavor you want. The service was super friendly and quick and they do not skimp on schmear or sandwich toppings! I personally ordered the turkey gouda sandwich and was super satisfied with what I ordered. It tasted great and the ingredients were fresh and plenty. Boyfriend had the egg sandwich bagel, and again it was fresh and there was lots of egg on there. Can't wait to come back to Detroit and have bagels from here again!

Fabulous spot for breakfast or lunch. Bagels are fresh and delicious and the atmosphere here is nice. They proudly serve anthology coffee and it was great!

Not a bad bagel...the breakfast bagel sandwich was good. Nothing that will make me rave, but if I am in the area and need a quick breakfast bite I would come here. Now, I do appreciate that they use their own, cooked-to-order eggs - I hate the fake egg stuff. They also use fresh and locally roast Anthology Coffee which was great!!

This is a neighbourhood gem. The space is beautiful and clean with a nice outdoor space (it was raining but looks lovely). Service is friendly and efficient and the bagels are delicious and inexpensive. My boyfriend and I each had a delicious breakfast sandwich. If we lived here we would be regulars. Well executed design and food. Nice work.

The revitalization of Corktown might just be one of my favorite parts about the positive changes happening in Detroit. With its historic landmarks, Corktown has the character and sense of community to be the comeback neighborhood. Detroit Institute of Bagels, among many other small businesses, is contributing to the turnaround of what once was the home of the original Tiger's Stadium. We had a difficult time deciding on what to get as the menu is full of creative options, but settled on a #6 Breakfast Sandwich with egg, cheese & avocado, ($5.50) on a small batch Cheddar Jalapeno bagel (+ $1) and Joseph Wesley Tea $2... everything was fresh and delicious. Detroit Institute of Bagels is reasonably priced with a variety of sandwiches, soups, bagels and spreads on the menu. Breakfast sandwiches are $3- $5.50 and lunch sandwiches $6- $11. They also have a display of Michigan-made products available for purchase. Fresh, friendly and tasty... all things you should look for in your bagel & coffee shop. Detroit Institute of Bagels is comfy and welcoming. You can grab a pick me up or some food and plop down at their counter overlooking Michigan Avenue or get cozy at a table, either way you will feel relaxed and satisfied with the vibe and taste!

I hate to write a mediocre review about a really cool place. However, I've been here twice now and had the same experience both times. First, the good: The atmosphere, decor, staff and location is perfect. And the coffee is amazing. I would go back for that alone and I appreciate the friendly staff. And all ingredients are definitely high quality, including the veggies and sandwich fillings. But I found the bagels just OK for the price. I won't be rushing back anytime soon. My dining companion had the same sentiment. The bagels are a nice texture but I found the ratio of harder, chewy outside to softer inside to be off. Both bagels I tried just seemed a bit too hard and chewy on the outside and I like my bagels chewy. I think the problem might be the size of the bagels since they are on the smaller side. I have tried the rosemary, olive oil and sea salt (in an egg and cheese sandwich) and the jalapeno (with just cream cheese, which they do very well) as well as the cheddar jalapeno (in a veggie sandwich), which was very disappointing since I could not taste any jalapeno in the bagel.

GET HERE NOW! Excellent customer service, exceptional facility, and wonderful staff who truly make the dining experience. We have been coming here for months and each visit is fantastic. The bagels are delicious! I love the small batch bagels (Rosemary Sea Salt and Jalepeno Cheddar). The bagel sandwich offerings all feature fresh local, quality ingredients. Coffee from Anthropology is a win. Plenty of vegan/vegetarian options too! The ice cold cucumber water is a nice, refreshing addition. If you're a fan of the Zingermans (Ann Arbor) philosophy behind food and customer service, you will feel right at home here. I look forward to supporting this business on a weekly basis! Keep up the great work, DIB!

I stopped by this morning with my fiance and got a turkey, bacon, avocado, and spicy mayo bagel sandwich. It was as good as any bagel sandwich I've had, and the price was fair too. We had a chocolate chip and sea salt cookie for dessert, which I thought was even better than the bagel. The staff was super friendly and the place had a great vibe. The only fault that I found with it was that the seating situation could have been improved a bit. It was pretty packed when we stopped in (Sunday morning), and a fair number of people ended up standing around eating their bagels when they clearly would have preferred a seat. (Warning: nitpick ahead) We sat next to the window and were a bit blinded by the sun as we ate; some shades for that time of day would have been greatly appreciated. Overall, we had a great meal, and I'm definitely going to recommend DIB to my friends.

Coffee so hot you'll think about Seinfeld. Good coffee too. Awesome bagel sandwich selection and the 2 i had were pretty dang good. if i had another day i would have tried a 3rd. egg, sausage, ham and cheese etc. salmon cream cheese is crazy good too. bagels themselves arent very impressive. i tried a few kinds and none blew me away even when i got them with just butter. just not a lot of flavor. personally i think salt is the best. (blueberry tasted like plain) i would go back if in the area and was hungry but i wouldnt rave about the place

This place is super cute. Little wooden tables and chairs, low prices for delicious bagels. A lot of room for a small place. Also have outside seating for lovely weather. Super nice and fast as well! I will be back, and bring others!

Congratulations on taking the big JUMP and investing in Detroit! I stopped in on a Saturday toward the end of the day to find a packed house and the smell of bacon and cheddar lingering in the air. I devoured the Bacon Cheddar bagel- a tasty cross between chewy, crispy but not too soft, cheesy, salty with just enough piggy..then washed it down with some AAAMAZING Anthology Coffee; Eli Gallardo Rojas Typica. There is something for everyone from raisin, salted, sesame, rosemary, bacon, cheddar and cucumber water if you're on the cheap. It's a great change up from ordinary tap water and soda. Don't forget to add a dollop of housemade cream cheese; veggie or regular. VERY GOOD! Support local business!! :)

Homemade bagels, tasty cookies, and a great space. This place is awesome! Also, can I tell you how refreshing the water here is? Cucumbers in my water - oh, so refreshing. My sister brought me here while I was in town and I got the rosemary bagel with egg, cheese, and avocado. It was a bit messy and I couldn't fit my mouth around it, but I was happy! 2 yums up and it made me want more. The space is clean, simple, filled with light and plants on the stairs - which makes me want to decorate my house the same way. When I go back to D-town, I will be sure to stop in again.

First time here but definitely not the last. My recommendation five stars run don't walk. What a good cup of plain coffee.

It was almost 7 and I was running late for work anyway, so why not stop for a bagel at the Detroit Institute of Bagels? II sat in the car for about 8 minutes until they opened. Where I was sitting, I could only see one door on the side of the building. I did not see the door facing Michigan Ave. I went to the side door that had a walkway leading to it, so it was clearly a door that is usually in use. There were several employees on the inside, one of which was a man who had just turned on the "open" signs. I pulled at the door and it was locked. I just figured they forgot to unlock it, so I stood there for a minute... in the COLD. He glanced at me and kept on about his business behind the counter. Then another employee walked past the door. Then finally a customer pointed around to the front. That alone made me want to leave. But since I was there and had already spent over ten minutes at this point, I went on and followed through with a purchase. I got a plain bagel with PB&J for $3. The menu, in general, was very pricey and I get that they are using pricey ingredients or whatever, or trying to be a craft bagel spot, but eh... The bagel was good, don't get me wrong. It was moist, I'm sure it was JUST made, as I was there as soon as they opened the doors. I'm sure everything on their menu is delicious, but I don't need to race back there. At least I tried it.

A little pricey for a college student budget, but they've got the best bagels I've had, maybe ever. I tried the Rosemary/Olive Oil/Sea Salt at the Eastern Market and have been hooked since. They have a cute little shop too which is great for grabbing breakfast/lunch and hanging out.

Really delicious bagels! I am officially addicted. New York Bagels in Ferndale has been my go to spot since it is much closer, but these bagels are tastier. They are, like others mentioned, on the smaller side, but they seem to be made with care. Also, the bagels are a tad more expensive than other places, but I'd be back. I wish they didn't close so early (3pm)!

Amazing bagels brought to you by local Detroit entrepreneurs. I especially like the Bacon and Cheddar bagels. Now open in Corktown.

Detroit Institute of Bagels has become my favorite breakfast spot in the D. The service is always GREAT, bagels are fresh and the coffee is good. A few items on the menu and pricey but not any more expensive then any of the other coffee shops just opening up in Detroit. I wish they had later hours but it's still one of my top 5

This place had it all! A clean and bright building filled with staff ready to greet you in such a welcoming way that you feel like you are at home. I had the lox and lemon cream cheese sesame bagel which was so delicious that we ordered a 1/2 dozen to take home along with the veggie cream cheese. Sooo goood. We found the order short a bagel and when I contacted them, they were helpful and sent a more than generous gift card to our house with a personalized note. This is what true customer service is for me.

i like this place a lot and wish i could come more! it's a small space though, and it's oftentimes been too crowded for me to want to fight the lines. that's a good sign for them though, i think! the bagels are really good - super springy and chewy, on the smaller side. the rosemary one is my favorite, and i get a sandwich on it. i've had the one with beets and the reuben without dressing. both are stuffed full and are really filling. the corned beef one might even be too intense because of how much food it actually is, but i guess no one said i had to eat it all. the coffee is good and the so are the big soft cookies! yum. i like working here when there's space. there's really only one big long table and the rest is a round table and counter space. if you can get the big table, it's a really good place to do work and they play totally ambient innocuous music. otherwise, not ideal for spreading out, but super light and cozy for hanging out. the people here are really nice and willing to help you talk through your big bagel decision. the prices are on the higher side, but they do have a premium space so they probably have to make up for that. also it's just worth it because it's good and you won't leave hungry. oh they also have day-olds by the dozen sometimes that are cheap. i wish they had better hours! closed at three just makes me sad, as i've often wanted an evening bagel sandwich.

I stopped in for a fast lunch with fresh food. My sandwich of choice, roasted red pepper, avocado and cucumbers, was delicious. I had it on a rosemary olive bagel with sea salt. To drink I ordered a bottle of cane sugar sweetened root beer. The staff was friendly. The place is clean and beautiful. And they use local products when they can. It doesn't get much better than this.

As a Brooklyn transplant i figure I'm a pretty good read on good vs. bad bagels. These definitely fall into the "Good" column, for sure. Good hard/waxing outside, doughy inside - good stuff. Only issue I have (and with New York Bagels in Ferndale)... Size Does Matter, guys. I dont want to be able to see through my bagel. It's not a donut. I "know" there's a hole - i don't need to look through it. They should/could be almost twice their size - then you'd get the full 5 stars from me. Better than the alternatives - but not sure it conjures up feelings on nostalgia for NYC anytime soon.

I guess because they are a Institute of Bagels is what makes them so freaking expensive. $12.75 for a everything with a schemer and lox, and a rosemary salt bagel with a plain schemer. I mean they are good bagels but that just seems a bit out of whack price wise. Sorry but with those prices I'll continue to go to Eastside bagel.

Great food & service at a reasonable price. Very nicely done interior also. Definitely on our list of places to return to.

Cork town has a different feel then downtown. And the Bagels are supreme. Yes; I realize I capitalized it. You will too when you try it. Kid shmear. Egg and bacon sandwich. Whatever you get order based upon compatibility with the Rosemary Sea Salt bagel. Two bagels with the aforementioned and two large coffees: $18.
(5)
Alyssa G.
I'm hooked on the avocado and egg sandwich but the beet+arugula and red pepper ones are right up there too! While you wait, go grab some cucumber water and chat with Mary. Also... If you're feeling gutsy, ask for Tina. They say Tina tastes so goooooood.... (Bacon?)

Leeann D.
Really impressed with this place! The rosemary, olive oil, & sea salt bagel is absolute perfection, and a sandwich on it is heavenly. Sandwiches run from $5-7 or so, which felt reasonable -- they were very, very generous with the fillings. Service has been outstanding. I love the welcoming, spacious interior; this would be a great place to spend the morning getting work done. I hope they'll extend their hours later into the day soon - I know I wouldn't be the only one stopping by for a late afternoon or evening snack.

Savory B.
$13.50 for two bagels, one with lox schmutz, and a small coffee is too much. The bagel was good, the service was hipster standard OK, but I'll grab a Zingerman's bagel with actual lox and coffee that's better and (something I thought I'd never say) cheaper. The breakfast sandwiches are reasonably priced. If I return I'll definitely go that route rather than venturing into the exotic bagels and shmears.

Favorite place for a quick brunch. Small batch bagels are amazing but if you're looking to keep your cost down, go for one of the regulars (I recommend jalapeño).

So proud of this place for their grand opening day. I ate their small batch rosemary sea salt olive oil bagel with butternut squash tahini crem cheese. They're open to flavor suggestions for cream cheese and bagels, too. Visit soon and return often.

Super duper happy that there is finally a good bagel place in the city. The bagels are full of flavor! Chewy and crispy not too soft and not too hard. The bagel choices are plentiful including classics like salt, sesame, everything and raisin. Their standout bagels are the bacon cheddar and rosemary olive oil. They have all the basic schmears like veggie and lox, and the lox cream cheese has a hint of citrus. Really good flavor. Bagel sandwiches on the menu and coffee, natural bottled sodas and juices make air one stop breakfast or lunch place. The place is huge open and clean and the cucumber water is a great change from just tap ice water! Gotta go! Yummy!

This is one of my favorite bagel shops. They have decent breakfast sandwiches and a good assortment of other breakfast selections. A must stop if you're in Corktown looking for a quick meal.

Had kind of an odd experience. The lady in line in front of us took about 10 minutes to order a few bagels to go and some cream cheese - she had a billion questions and it was pretty frustrating. Obviously, this is not really in DIB's control. But, everyone in the bagel prep line was just waiting because there is only one cashier, and all orders go through the single cashier. Growing up working in a bagel store, we always had multiple cashiers and people taking orders to avoid this kind of bottleneck. DIB should consider a similar system of having multiple people taking orders. Anyway, after this frustrating waiting experience, I finally got to the bagel (everything with vegetable cream cheese) and it was a very solid bagel. Good chewiness, I liked the caraway seeds mixed in with the usual everything bagel toppings, good veggie cream cheese. Only two minor complaints - bagel was on the smaller side, and it wasn't cut in half (it was cut in half to put the cream cheese on, but not cut again down the middle). Overall, I'd say 4.5 stars, but rounding up bc of lack of other bagel stores in the area. The few issues are pretty easily fixed.

There really isn't any reason to get a bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel anywhere else. I had a go-to place when I lived in Chicago and ever since moving to Michigan, I longed for that perfect combination, that perfect combination of all that was right in the world...of breakfast. I had given up my search after so many metro Detroit let downs. BUT my spirits were renewed when I had that first bite of DIB bacon, egg & cheese on a sesame bagel. Now I know that when I need that perfect bagel, I need look no further than this friendly, Corktown staple. Ps I love the cucumber water

I'm revising my original review after another comparison with another local bagel shop. Taste is on the money. And that's also coming from quality ingredients as well. I'll have to ask next time and be 'that guy' who wants to know if everything is local, organic, what farm it came from, etc haha. But I trust it's generally in that direction. Everything is pricier. I was a little unsettled at first, but if the ingredients list justifies it, so be it. If they are paying their employees a better wage, so be it. There are a few things that could be a wee bit less expensive, like the basic plain bagel and house cream cheese comes in at a whopping $3.00. Many are used to paying $2 which is easier to digest. The bagel size is smaller in traditional to original NY-style bagels, as opposed to the monster half-loavers that stole the scene in the last few decades and got trendy with the big chains. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere appropriately up to snuff considering the location. This is artisanal, craft, hand-made, insert-trendy-adjective-here, bagels. Although local competitor NY bagels has been around quite a while, I'll be blunt: if I see canned ingredients, that's a no-no. So the fact that DIB is using fresh, local or high quality ingredients convinces me to pay the premium. For my personal taste, if I can afford it, I will come. Naturally my wish that good quality food be moderately priced is a little pie in the sky, but that's more of a problem with a game than the player.

There was a beautiful lady who seemed to be in charge and a very witty young man rang me up. The bagel sand which I got was really good. The butternut tahini spread is so tasty. Too bad I usually end up wanting to go on Mondays, the one day they're closed.

This place is special. They make you feel like they really valued my business. Each staffer was sooooo kind. Not just nice, but friendly. And the bagels were perfect. Generous with cream cheese and creative with flavors. Big, clean space to hang out, work, relax. Love it.
(5)Matt A.
Food rules, place rules, people rules, it's the way to go if you want some bagels. Super friendly people! Buncha fuckin' sweethearts with good coffee and killer bagels. They keep a clean shop too. Go there, get full! If you don't, ya blew it and are blowin' it.
(5)Patrick E.
Friendly service, great atmosphere(love the brick work), and great bagels. What are you waiting for!? Go get your bagels.
(5)True D.
Pricey, but very good. Consistently good bagels and sandwiches. I wish they had better coffee, but that doesn't stop me from going regularly. I love the bagel breakfast sandwiches. Great service and great food.
(4)Jason N.
Amazing. Best. Bagels. In.
(5)Dib D.
The DIB gets Dib's stamp of approval. The rosemary/olive oil/sea salt bagel is a winner! Very cool spot. Will be back again.
(5)Ericka D.
(5)Daniel M.
Great place to go on a Sunday morning for a bagel and to do some work. Very well decorated and nice vibe overall. I have yet to try the bagel dog, but everything is solid.
(5)Carrie B.
Fantastic bagels (the kind that are too good to toast) and great coffee, you can tell they put a lot of care into the food they create and the space is really nice. They have a good amount of seating which is nice as it was quite busy on a Saturday morning and I always appreciate not having to wait for a table.
(5)Kathryn A.
Just stopped in for a (baker's) dozen this morning, and had to eat one the second I got home because they smelled so good in the car. These are bagels done just the way I like them, not too big, not too doughy, the outside has a little crunch and the inside is perfectly chewy.
(5)Elizabeth L.
(5)David S.
(5)Peter K.
Garbage. Avoid.
(1)Noam K.
Go DIB!
(5)Richard R.
My son and I really enjoyed our visit to the Detroit institute of bagels. The atmosphere was very inviting and made us want to hang out awhile, I thought the pricing was fair and everything was fresh and tasty. I would highly recommend it to anyone and we will definitely return.
(5)B R.
Bagels with the absolute correct chewiness. The Sandwiches are life-changing! I cannot eat lousy bagels ever again. Worth a trip. Support Detroit!!
(5)Lori G.
(4)Maria B.
BE SURE TO CHECK OUT DIB AT EASTERN MARKET ON TUESDAYS FROM 11-1
(4)Becki K.
i had the rosemary sea salt bagel. there is no salt on it, that i can find. it's tasty but pricey
(3)Anthony B.
(5)Angela S.
(3)Michelle L.
(4)Stephen G.
(1)Bill S.
Great Bagels, very cool space.
(5)Lori K.
Yes, they are coming to Corktown, Yes!
(5)Samantha L.
Simple but done right. Had the egg & cheese breakfast bagel & a regular bagel with cream cheese. It was delicious!! Fresh cream cheese and the iced coffee that is bottled from anthology is a great touch to breakfast.
(5)Kathleen S.
(4)Katie M.
(4)Tim G.
(5)Chris M.
(3)Chelsea H.
(5)Michelle N.
(5)Ricky A.
(5)Richard T.
(5)Bre R.
(4)Jay Arra M.
(5)Nellie T.
(4)Hillary F.
Lived here every morning for about a month straight during finals... Not a single regret. The light and complete vibrance of the place is perfect; feels like home. Always get a sesame toasted with scallion cream cheese, and their coffee is amazing. If you ever need a good hideout in the morning to read or get work done, this little slice of heaven is the place to do so
(5)Katie K.
Perfectly sized bagels. The DIB knows how to make a bagel sandwich, too. Can't wait to go back to grab a few bagels and some housemate cream cheese to take back to Ann Arbor with me.
(5)Nicole S.
(5)Rachel O.

(5)Dennis Z.

(4)Denny P.
(3)Mike N.

(5)Cathy S.
Fabulous spot for breakfast or lunch. Bagels are fresh and delicious and the atmosphere here is nice. They proudly serve anthology coffee and it was great!
(5)Caleb Y.
(3)Adele R.

(3)Jenna K.

(4)Susan L.

Had the rosemary olive oil bagel w plain cream cheese it was so perfect ! The rosemary flavor wasn't overpowering and the bagel the perfect soft/crunchy mix . Yum!
(5)Adrienne D.
Trendy interior Delicious food They have a leave a book take a book section They recycle
(5)Nicole W.
(4)Melissa L.
(5)Richard F.
Amazing bagels brought to you by local Detroit entrepreneurs. I especially like the Bacon and Cheddar bagels. Now open in Corktown.
(5)Jennyfer C.
(5)Angela D.
(5)Kensey W.
i like this place a lot and wish i could come more! it's a small space though, and it's oftentimes been too crowded for me to want to fight the lines. that's a good sign for them though, i think! the bagels are really good - super springy and chewy, on the smaller side. the rosemary one is my favorite, and i get a sandwich on it. i've had the one with beets and the reuben without dressing. both are stuffed full and are really filling. the corned beef one might even be too intense because of how much food it actually is, but i guess no one said i had to eat it all. the coffee is good and the so are the big soft cookies! yum. i like working here when there's space. there's really only one big long table and the rest is a round table and counter space. if you can get the big table, it's a really good place to do work and they play totally ambient innocuous music. otherwise, not ideal for spreading out, but super light and cozy for hanging out. the people here are really nice and willing to help you talk through your big bagel decision. the prices are on the higher side, but they do have a premium space so they probably have to make up for that. also it's just worth it because it's good and you won't leave hungry. oh they also have day-olds by the dozen sometimes that are cheap. i wish they had better hours! closed at three just makes me sad, as i've often wanted an evening bagel sandwich.
(4)Lynn B.
(5)Christian C.
(3)Bob N.
(1)Brian S.
Great food & service at a reasonable price. Very nicely done interior also. Definitely on our list of places to return to.
(5)Darby W.
(5)Alyssa G.
I'm hooked on the avocado and egg sandwich but the beet+arugula and red pepper ones are right up there too! While you wait, go grab some cucumber water and chat with Mary. Also... If you're feeling gutsy, ask for Tina. They say Tina tastes so goooooood.... (Bacon?)
(5)Leeann D.
(5)Savory B.
(3)Julie M.
Favorite place for a quick brunch. Small batch bagels are amazing but if you're looking to keep your cost down, go for one of the regulars (I recommend jalapeño).
(5)Sherrie H.
So proud of this place for their grand opening day. I ate their small batch rosemary sea salt olive oil bagel with butternut squash tahini crem cheese. They're open to flavor suggestions for cream cheese and bagels, too. Visit soon and return often.
(5)Joy S.
Gotta go! Yummy!
(4)Brook B.
Like this place... Good fresh "home made bagels". Fast and friendly.
(4)Roy A.

(5)Jess M.
(5)Aaron B.
(4)Hot Sam R.
There was a beautiful lady who seemed to be in charge and a very witty young man rang me up. The bagel sand which I got was really good. The butternut tahini spread is so tasty. Too bad I usually end up wanting to go on Mondays, the one day they're closed.
