If you love roast beef and gravy, this is the place for you. It's tender and delicious. The only complaint I have is they don't salt it very much. I find myself using the salt shaker a lot, but once I do it's very good. Their mashed potatoes are made from scratch, and you can tell. The salads offer a good variety of toppings and dressings. I also love their dinner rolls with real butter available to put on them. I was disappointed when they closed their Westland location because it was much closer to my house. Now I usually go to the Dearborn location on Sundays after church. This is definitely an old people's place. I feel like I'm the youngest person there who doesn't work there. No big deal though. Older people tend not to be noisy or have crying babies with them. That's a plus. If you sign up for their e-mail specials they will occasionally send you a printable coupon for a 15% discount on your meal. It's definitely worth doing.

A variety of salads and shrimp cocktail lined up side-by-side in this cafeteria-styled restaurant. Guests can make and dress their own salads or select coleslaw or potato salad before moving onto the main course. There, the roast beef looked good so I pretty much ignored everything else. The beef came with mashed potatoes and a lot of dark gravy. Despite that, the meal was largely bland. I also got a chance to taste the mac and cheese and Brussels sprouts, both of which were below average. The folks at the counter were informative and friendly. I appreciated their enthusiastic welcome and desire to help.

I love this place. I am under 50 and the old people sigma doesn't bother me one bit. The food is always delicious and you can control the amount you eat because of the buffet counter setup that allows you to interact with the person dishing out your food. The waitstaff takes your tray to the area you want to sit at and checks in on you without being intrusive, a not very easy task and they do it all while being nice and pleasant. Biggest bonus for me? The free pickle, beet and horseradish station! Like I said, I love this place.

I went today for lunch. Within 20 minutes after leaving, I began to feel sick. I'm still sick and now it's 6:32PM. Hot and cold sweats, bathroom runs multiple times, stomach cramps...the works. I don't know if it was the beef, mashed potatoes, broccoli/rice/cheese..or the beets that did it. I would call over there to let them know...but I figured this was the better way to go and get the word out. Today is May 21, 2014 by the way in case anyone else got sick from eating there this afternoon also.

I love Beef carver. Its inexpensive but fresh. The waitresses are very polite. I'm a fan of the scrod or the mushroom chopped steak. Just don't go 10 minutes before they close. Its cafeteria style...so all the good food is gone by then..

Ok, if you are in the under 60 crowd you will feel a little out of place here, but don't let that deter you. The food here is very good. The scrod fish that they have is always fresh, and the roast beef very tender. They have an abundance of sides to choose from, and wonderful desserts. The free beets and pickles are great too! While this is cafeteria style, there are still waitstaff around to refill drinks, and they are very attentive. Great place to take the family for dinner as there is something for everyone.

Before I could even taste the food, I was super impressed by the staff at Sign of the Beefcarver! As many other reviewers have noted, this place is a hub for senior citizens but it's the care the customer receives that sets them apart from other places. I took my grandmother here for lunch and although she is nearing 90, she has the energy of a 9-year-old. This means that every outing is an 'adventure' but can also be tiring for the average person. It seems the staff had encountered people similar to my grandma because they knew exactly what to do. They answered all her questions about the food, helped her take it to her table, showed her the pickle/beet bar (it's worth a visit just for that!), etc. I could't thank them enough! The food isn't bad and you'll love it if you're the type who enjoys food swimming in gravy. I tried the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. One lunch serving is enough to have you stuffed. Not the best place for vegetarians but there are salads, good bread and the pickle/beet bar. The interior is exactly what you'd expect from a 'beef carver' with brick fireplaces, overhead lights that look like lanterns, etc. For the carnivore who doesn't mind food served cafeteria style, this could be your new place!

I love Beefcarver! It's too bad there aren't more of these around. Let's not sugarcoat it this is an old folks place. But I love every part of it! Old school cafeteria style line. The food is fresh and the staff is extra friendly. The selection of food is large and and there are never a lot of people. Plus where can you find a pickle and beet bar?!?!??? Exactly. 5 stars! Next question.

Decent Cafeteria style food. If you are just under 40 like me, you will feel super young at the Beefcarver, where it seems the average median age is around 70. The beef is alright, but the sides could be a little better. It seems because of the geriatric crowd, they do not use alot of salt or seasonings in the food. The Au-Jus is almost always tasteless, and I end up dumping a bunch of salt in it. The desserts are average, but they have this one egg custard dessert with raisins that I can never say no, for some strange reason. My favorite part of my trip to the Beefcarver, is the people watching. Nothing better than the the gray hairs line up at the Relish bar for the free beets and pickles.

When you want a good meal for a reasonable price, follow the old folks. When you want a meal that is only decent but overpriced, follow the college aged crowd. Granted, I fall into the grad school age bracket, but still, I'm a 60 year old at heart. I love cafeteria-style food, from Morrison's Cafeteria to Piccadilly. I got the roast beef, carrots, sweet potatoes, side salad, and sweet potato pie. The roast beef was good but they don't give you much of a choice as far as how you want it cooked. It was on the well done side as opposed to the rare to medium rare that I like. The carrots and sweet potatoes were pretty good, not too sweet. The sweet potato lacked the spice that I was looking for. It could have used some more cinnamon or nutmeg. Overall, the flavors were pretty tame basically because of the clientele. All that food for about 13-14 dollars. The service is pretty good (basically consisting of them taking your food to your table and checking on you every so often for refills and whatnot). You pick your food items just like in any cafeteria, be it school or hospital. Then they carry your tray to a table of your choosing. The staff is incredibly friendly. This is how I would have liked it if I grew up in a white family. When the older female staff come around, it's almost like you are being served by your mom. This feels good especially if you're on the road a lot like I am. Let's be honest though, is this place really good for kids? They have all the foods that I hated as a kid. Lima beans, cauliflower au gratin, carrots. If you can get your kids to eat all that stuff without having to resort to the tactics of the mom from A Christmas Story then more power to you.

I used to LOVE Beefcarver, before they closed the location I liked in Allen Park. Cafeteria-style line with hostesses who carry your tray to the table. I loved the roast turkey and roast beef dinners I would have on Sundays with my Pastor and the Adult Sunday School class from my church. The closest thing I can find now is Piccadilly in Hollywood, FL - but it is not the same. I miss Beefcarver.

Beefcarver's a pretty solid option if you want decent cafeteria-style food. The beef is usually good and tender, flavorful, and juicy, and while some of the sides aren't my favorite (their mashed potatoes tend to be a little on the bitter side for me) most of their fare is quite good and you get what you pay for here. It's also an old-folks haven, so it's quiet, calm, and peaceful inside, and the location here is rarely packed. Just be careful of their hours - on some nights they close as early as 8:00 PM.

We had an excellent dinner. I'm never disappointed when I come here. The roast beef is the best quality that you can get. I usually don't get the hot vegetables because I always get the pickles and the pickled beets which I absolutely love. Of course my coconut cream pie was so high I could see heaven and it was so Snowy white I thought I saw angels. The employees were extremely nice and the cashier accepted an expired coupon which they always do. They've been doing that since the beginning of time. Boy I sure hope to god they don't close this one down so make sure you people keep giving them your business.
