Great sangria. Great food. No wait at 3 pm on a Sunday.....Awesome!

I went here for my birthday and loved it. The chips and salsa are really good, as is the guacamole. I got the enchiladas poblanas, my mom got the enchiladas rojas and my dad got the nachos and we all shared- all dishes were really good, but I was especially impressed with the enchiladas poblanas, I will be going back for those for sure. I got a sangria/margarita mix drink, I think it was around $9 which I thought was a tad excessive until I saw that it was massive. It was really delicious too, and one was certainly enough. The only tiny negative was that our waitress wasn't the friendliest, but hey, everyone has off nights. Also, a lot of reviews on here say it's a loud place (which concerned me, my parents hate loud places) but it wasn't at all in my opinion. I'll definitely go again!

I really wanted to like this place more given that it's in my city and I love to support local businesses. After finally making it over for lunch, I have to say that I wasn't overly impressed. We had a group of 5 come in on a Sunday afternoon and the place was virtually deserted, but our service was still a little on the slow side. We all split some guacamole and queso and honestly, $8 for the large guacamole is pretty steep for what you get. The queso was alright, but nothing really wowed me. For my entree I ordered the enchiladas with the poblano cream sauce, but because I am a little picky about my enchilada sauces, I requested the sauce on the side, which they happily provided, but my enchiladas came out totally naked, no cheese melted on like you'd normally see, and the waitress took care of that right away by bringing me out a little side of queso. Okay, I guess I was expecting the standard queso fresco or whatever the white cheese you always see melted on enchiladas. This seems like your standard Tex-Mex place and I'd give it another shot but I don't think I'd go out of my way for it.

Mojave is near our home. The margaritas and chimichangas are delicious. The staff is great as well. Casual and fun. Sitting on the patio right now:)

Went here for the first time with friends. Finally, A GREAT Mexican restaurant within walking distance from home. The food was outstanding. I want to make this my top Mexican restaurant in the Detroit Metro area!!

Have been here a couple times. We would probably never go on our own, but if people are meeting there, we'll show. The food is good, not great and definitely not authentic. Obviously. But it's OK. A little pricey for what it is.

I don't get the hype. There was nothing wrong about the but there was nothing remarkable either. Americanized Mexican food and some creative drinks. Save the long wait and loud crowd and try any of the dozens of traditional Mexican restaurants in town.

Went in on after being done at sec of state, needed something lively yet comfortable. And this did it! No wait at all! Friendly staff, hated how the waitress said the Spanish words super English style at a Mexican establishment (I'm Mexican it's a pet peeve) but what can you do? Lol Ordered the enchiladas poblanas, they were really good, rice and beans good too, only complaint was the cheese they put on top the beans but that's typical here, still not terrible. My partner had the chicken tacos Mexicanos and he liked them. The salsas were good too. Oh and the drinks! Delicious! Tried the hornitos lime shot that was good. I'm not a fan of sugary drinks (too many calories, can't taste the liquor, and give you a headache) so I took a a chance and tried the raspberry mojito and it was really good. Used real raspberries, I'm pretty sure because I could see the chunks and seeds and wasn't sweet at all but had the flavor, tasted the lime and mint and the only thing that could have made it better was if I were poolside or on a tropical beach. Overall I loved it. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the cheese and the crowd was older, but I will be going back this weekend at night to see how it is then. Definitely will be returning frequently to try more things.

Tried this for the first time and was thoroughly impressed. Loved the look of the interior when we walked in, and we have been looking for a good Mexican place for a while. Our server, David, was awesome! He has a great personality and immediately charmed (and teased) everyone at the table. The food: terrific. The salsa is amazing and, unlike almost every other Mexican restaurant in the area, the chips were not stale. My daughter is a super picky eater and she immediately proclaimed her tacos were good. My husband had the tacos Mexicano which he thought were great. I loved the veggie quesadillas. The only criticism is that the management needs to work on the fruit flies. Otherwise, a must try.

My friend and I stopped in here the other day around 3 pm for a late lunch. The chips and salsa were yummy! I think that they make their salsa which is cool. I had the shredded chicken tex-mex tacos an she had an enchilada. Both our meals were good, but the show stopper was their $4 happy hour margaritas. They had a bunch of different flavored choices. I had mango and it was pretty out of this world. I would suggest stopping here to grab a bite to eat and some drinks if you live in the area!

I've been in a quite a few times for dinner and lunch. The service is always top notch. My favorite dish is the fish tacos. I will sometimes order them to carryout if I have to eat on the run. Their guac is amazing. They had an apple cider martini during the fall. I need that recipe. It was to die for. The only downfall is that their manager can be a little bit of a pervy creeper when you walk in. I think he's harmless. I've met Phil the owner a few times, he seems to be a solid person. I will be back!

My husband and I frequent this little Mexican restaurant in Clawson. The owner is very friendly and the food and service are always good. It's a local business, not a chain which I would rather support anyhow. The chimichangas and enchiladas with the green sauce are my favorite!

I feel like I caught them on a bad night. When we arrived there was a wait. Ok, fine. It was Saturday night after all. But, there was no hostess. The manager (maybe owner?) was buzzing around and taking people's names down, which is fine, but he would randomly disappear to do manager things for awhile. So new groups would wander in and not have any idea what was going on until one of the other waiting groups would fill them in on the situation. They were also seating lots of groups at once, which was odd. Like, they would seat 3-4 tables at once followed by a long wait and another 3-4 tables. Doesn't seem like the best system, and I hope the hostess was just sick that night and this isn't how they always do it. We finally sat down and it took our waitress quite awhile to get to us. The other 2 groups that were sat at the same time had their margaritas before we ever saw our server. Normally I'd just chalk that up to a bad server, but it clearly wasn't her fault. She had a big party right next to us and at least two other tables. So four tables and one of them was a 10-12 person party. It's too much. She was running around and doing her best trying to get to everyone but it was just too slow. These two things kind of worry me about this place. I'm hoping they had multiple call-offs that night and this isn't the norm. A hostess would have kept the queue moving better and our waitress was very good, just too busy. She got everything right and brought the sour cream I asked for right away, but her manager put her in a bad position. It concerns me that this is the kind of place that tries to run on a skeleton staff to reduce payroll but to the detriment of it's employees. Annoying your customers with an unorganized wait system and slow service only punishes the servers because they get bad tips. Anyway, on to the food. It was ok. The chips and salsa were very good and the highlight of the night; the salsa was different from the typical kind you find and I was impressed. The margarita was middling, but at least it was cheap. I probably should have gone with the special one for a few dollars more. I feel like a better house margarita for $8 would be preferable to a mediocre one for $6, but maybe this works for them. My chimichunga was bland. The chicken had no flavor to it at all, but otherwise it was a well-made chimichunga. Bonus points for giving me guacamole without charging extra for it. The rice and beans were fine. My gf had similar comments about her tacos, so maybe this was just an off-night for the kitchen too, since neither of our dishes had much flavor or spice to them. Overall it was ok, but based on this meal I would not be eager to return. I will go back to see if we have the same experience, because I'm really hoping it was just a bad night. And no I did not tip the waitress poorly since she was doing the best she could under the circumstances.

I went here for the first time recently and I'm mad I didn't try it sooner. The food was great, service was better and the house margarita was pretty good too. I tried the chimichangas and they were the best I've had in a while. The place is also clean and well set up. I will definitely be back!

Upon walking up to the restaurant, one of the employees was sitting on the outside bench smoking, so we had to walk through that before we even got into the restaurant. When we walked in the Manager did greet us right away; nevertheless, the wait staff was chatting a lot among themselves and laughing a lot. At the bar to the right of the entrance, the bartender was cutting up a cake someone had brought from the outside. This was just my first impression of the place. Once we were seated the waitress and the Manager gave us some chips and salsa. I love their salsa. We ordered some drinks and dinner. I ordered the chicken Chimichangas. $9.00 and my friend ordered Pork Tacos Mexicanos $9.00's. The food tasted like it was frozen and they just heated it up. Now I love Mexican food and I am used to homemade Mexican food. So sorry to say this, but it did not taste anything like homemade food. The presentation was nice on the plate, but I did not even finish my plate of food. The drinks tasted watered down. Service: I feel we got a new waitress. She was sweet and nice, but did not know "Waitress 101". For example: Extra Napkins or take away extra glasses or dishes. If you see spills, maybe offer to clean it up, so people can have a conversation after dinner with a clean table or maybe fill up your customers water glasses. None of this happened on its own. I had to ask for it all. The wait staff: The seemed to chat a lot and laugh a lot on the dinning floor. The Manager: My hat goes off to him. Once the bill was brought over to us, he did seem generally concerned about our feed back on the drinks and did say he would pass it on. Atmosphere: The decorations were trendy. They had some large screen TVs on the wall. They had a nice outdoor patio. Overall I did not like the food. Our waitress was sweet. I do wish this place good luck and hope they will keep working on the overall customer experience.

We love this place. It's fresh and delicious and the service is always very good. HOWEVER, and this is huge, it is incredibly loud in there! Do not plan on being able to carry a conversation with anyone at your table, it's impossible. It would be perfect if there were something set up to absorb sound in there; this is a big deterrent for us. We try to sit outside if possible, but patio is very small & not always an option because of weather.

I so wished for this place to be good but Ethnic food should be authentic. I've had some amazing mexican food in my life so it's hard to eat at these kind of places. This place has good ambience and service but food is nothing special. If you want happy hour with alcohol & mediocre food then this place is for you.

fast service, good atmosphere, the BEST fish tacos! They use a home made coleslaw with a "kick" in the tortilla. (Order 3)

Ouch! My stomach and rear end hurts. Decided to try this place last minute and it was a bad decision. If you like your salsa mild, you won't like theirs. You will also want to dust some of the salt off the chips. I had the tacos mexicanos and the meat was overcooked and tough to chew. Usually with tacos mexicanos the onions aren't cooked. Overall, it seemed like someone doesn't know to cook. The service was ok. The atmosphere was pleasing but crowded. The tables are very close together. Don't bother, go elsewhere.

We (my fiancé and I) really wanted to like this place as it is close by, casual, and there really aren't any Mexican places near Clawson.. However, our experience was a disaster. I did try and take into account that the place is new and still trying to work out the kinks, but from the time we sat down until the time we walked out (with one of us having never been served our food!) was just bad. Though our server appeared to be trying hard, she among everyone else on the staff (aside from the bartenders) seemed totally lost. First, we placed our orders for food and drinks.. After a long wait for the drinks, and half way through our cocktails, our same waitress comes back and honestly asked if we were ready to order?? Considering she took our order 10+ mins prior, we thought it was a joke. No joke. She assured us she did put in our food order, and we even reminded what we ordered. Finally when the food came out, one order was totally wrong! We sent it back and ordered an $11 cocktail, resolved to wait for his meal. Well, the 3x we asked about the cocktail and more chips and salsa from 2 different people never came, so we cancelled the delayed order and got out of there. Needless to say, we will not be trying this anytime soon. Food was ok, but not worth the poor service and lost staff.

Meh, I've had better Mexican. The food in my opinion was just decent. The chicken in my burrito was very bland, and my husband said his entree was better after he smothered it in hot sauce. When we got out waters they had floaters in them, sent them back and they still had floaters. I feel the prices are too high for just being mediocre.

Visited this place on a Thursday night in August around 6:30. Just about the only good thing about this dining experience was the manager greeting us at the door when my friend and I walked in, and being sat right away. But I will say that the manager should perhaps consider buttoning his shirt up another level or so to avoid looking so sleazy. And hairy. SERVICE: awful. No refills on drinks, no extra napkins, no return checkup, and this was all the while there were about 4-5 servers as well as the manager sitting around looking bored out of their skulls. Horrible image to set for your diners. Either teach them how to look busy, or don't keep so many people on staff. FOOD: mediocre at BEST. I had some version of their enchiladas, which were bland, greasy, and barely warm. The margarita I ordered was quite weak (just FYI). Chips and salsa are okay, and the "sopapillas" are disappointing. Pass.

I would have to say this was one of the worst Mexican restaurants I've ever been to. If it weren't for the guacamole, I may have stormed out. It took 30 minutes to get our tacos, huh? So I guess I had plenty of time to leave, boy I wish I did. Would not recommend to anyone.

Went to Mojave for lunch...they just opened, so I understand that they are still learning. I love the decor...very mission viejo California...the wood is great, the colors are awesome, the doors are fantastic...I should end here on a positive note. I ordered the $7 traditional Mexican lunch special with 2 tacos al pastor and tortilla soup. The pork was almost sawdust dry and had no flavor. I almost tasted the cilantro but it was completely overwhelmed with the sautées onion flavor. The tortilla soup was heat hot...that was the only flavor. The stips of tortilla made for a nice textual contrast, but there was no flavor whatsoever. The chips were OK...the thick kind...the mild salsa had HUGE chunks of tomato, the hot salsa (Mojave) was bland, and the Diabla had a great kick!! I don't know why restaurants insist on taking the Mexican out of the Mexican...but I will try again in a while...at least for the decor; otherwise, I guess it's back to El Guanaco!!

I'm actually very surprised about the negative reviews on this place. There are a lot of Mexican places in the area that I've been to, and this is hands down the best. I went there for drinks and dinner yesterday, and for being a Friday night, the service was awesome and the wait was short. There were lots of servers and our waitress was very attentive to our needs. The place was also packed which was great to see. The margaritas are huge and cheap- I could barely finish mine by the end of my dinner, and it wasn't the pre-made mix other restaurants around here have (ahem Cantina Diablos). Great place to order these and get you in the summer mood! The food was fantastic- came out quickly, was warm, and very tasty! I ordered ground beef Enchiladas Poblanos and it was great. They were full of flavor. The ground beef had a special seasoning to it and was very moist- not dry at all. The Poblano pepper sauce was fantastic. I finished every bite. You also get chips and salsa. The salsa has a tang to it- not overpowering with spice, which does not mean a bad salsa (it's super easy to make something spicy). Overall, avoid the negative reviews of unhappy people and check this place out. I definitely will be coming back!

Three words: Don't Eat Here. I have never had "mexican" food that was so unlike food from Mexico. It was all bland... from the spiceless salsa to the entree', Tampiquena. Seriously awful stuff. I'm sooooo sorry I didn't take the advice of the other one-star reviews. Drive-thru Del Taco instead.

Went this past Saturday evening around 6pm and there was no wait. Very nice on the inside and lots of parking. We had the margarita's (I think Cadillac)- Yummy, Guac with bacon - Yummy, the chips/salsa that come when you sit down- not too salty and my husband thought the salsa was a little hot while I did not. For main dishes- I had the Fish Tacos and they are the BEST I have ever had in Michigan!!!!!! YUUMMMMYYY. Hubby had chick/steak tacos- he said they were OK but he loved the beans & rice so very much. Not too expensive, not too much on the menu (just right) and the service was very friendly. The whole experience didn't totally blow me away but we will be back- very casual and comfy!

Great chips and salsa and the 6 dollar lunches are a nice touch. Lunch burrito with cholula sauce is big and hot. Clean and fresh atmosphere, main dining room seats 86 plus the bar, 6 TV's looks like the patio is going to be opening soon. Classic pop music from the sixties enjoyable. Waitress was rather unknowledgable and service was not fluid. She seemed to linger longer than needed and lacked server protocols as she did at Baileys ( "do you want it wet?") Easily fixable. This place will do well with some careful promotion.

The chicken fajitas are huge and delicious. I was a bit bummed to be charged around $3 extra for a side of guacamole when I asked for it instead of sour cream, but what can you do. The vibe is mellow, although it gets a bit loud in there, and they have good happy hour deals. It is not exactly the Mexican food that I am used to (coming from California) but it tasted like something homemade which gave it an air of authenticity. It still has the feel of a new place - it was our waitresses first day so she had to confirm a few things in the kitchen, and didn't remember our order. Also when we left there were like 7 waiters/bussers standing around aimlessly blocking the back exit, and there had been three outside smoking on the way in. We'll be back for sure!

We went to Mojava Cantina last night for the first time ever. Inside, it was as festive and fun as it appears from the street. Every table was taken, so we had a short wait at the bar. I had a skinny margarita, which was OK but tasted too much like pop with alcohol in it. My friends both had beer, and the selection of microbrews was pretty good. We sat down and were given chips & salsa. The salsa was excellent, but the chips were not. They were kind of stale and didn't have any salt on them. We thought they tasted like baked tortilla chips. For dinner, I had a steak salad. It was merely OK. The steak wasn't anything out of the ordinary. I might as well have been at Applebees. My fiance had chicken floutas and he said they were OK. Our other friend had a beef burrito, and he said it was barely OK. Worst of all was the guacamole that I ordered as a side dish. It took a long time to arrive and when it did it was pretty much flavorless. Also, it was really cold, as if it had recently been defrosted from a frozen state. Our waitress was really nice, but in the end even good service and a fun atmosphere can't make up for a Mexican restaurant with bad chips, mediocre food and bland guacamole.

Ok, I've been there a few times and the experience has fallen back to earth. The food is constantly lukewarm/cold. They also serve the main course shortly after the appetizer/soup, giving you little time to enjoy the soup. It's obvious they microwave everything. I personally don't care how it's heated as long as it tastes good, but the bottom line is it shouldn't be cold. The only consistent thing is the tortilla soup and the chips/salsa. I'm pretty disappointed. I'm not a Mexican food snob, but there aren't many decent places in the area either. Not sure if I'll bother to come back.

Having tried a similar "cantina" in Royal Oak the day before, I wanted to try this for comparison. I've read that the lunch and dinner rushes lead to a cramped dining experience. I went at 2:00 pm, so I cannot speak to that. The waitstaff was prompt and courteous, and our food came quickly and was very hot. The salsa that came with the chips was interesting....almost sweet with perhaps figs or raisins in it? Not bad, just different. What I did like when I ordered the enchiladas pablano was that the plate was not slathered in thick cheese, which seems to be the trend lately. Yes, there was melted cheese, but not to much that it dominated all of the other flavors. $22.00 for two dinners and a soft drink for me (my son's lemonade was no charge). I will heed the advice of others here and avoid the busy times.

Best mexican food in the area. The service is pretty good and the salsa is very tasty. If you like spicy food, ask to try "salsa diabla" it's so good! I've only ever gone for lunch when it was not busy. My only gripe is the scarcity of vegetarian options, there was one thing on the menu I could find. I'm not a strict vegetarian but it's my preference, I'll sometimes eat seafood. Either way, there wasn't a whole lot for me to order. Last time I went, there was a mixup with something I ordered. I asked for fajita vegetables for my taco (ie sauteed onions and peppers) and she brought broccoli and squash. I mentioned it to the waittress and she fixed it immediately. Annoying because I didn't want to eat until the veggies came so my food got cold. But it was really nice of her to fix it.

    (4)
  • Rina B.

The menu was somewhat limited and needs more vegetarian selections. My husband had a burrito without meat and I had fish tacos. Our food was okay. We were definitely not thrilled and will probably never go back. One thing that was nice is that they had ten craft beers on the menu.

  • Jason G.

I have not had anything on the menu that wasn't at least good or better and I've had almost everything on the menu. The cervezarita is a must try. It's clean and I've never had to wait long. The down side is that it is a bit noisey and on really busy nights the staff runs behind.

Bland, overpriced food. Slow service. Salsa was some of the worst I've ever had. Would not recommend to anyone.

I ate here with some friends and were excited to try it out. However the food was a complete waste of our time. My husband got the flautas, which were so dry he could barely eat them. His food looked and tasted like it had been sitting in the heat lamp all day. For $10.50 it was a huge rip off. I got the tacos Mexicanos, and the meat was flavorless and so dry. I would not recommend coming here at all. Costco does better tex-mex.

I have to say, I was excited about a new Mexican restaurant in town, and was looking forward to trying it out. We got there, and the front walk was not shoveled (it hadn't snowed for over a day at this point). Then when we walked to our table, my shoes were sticking to the sticky floor. Our waitress came right up with waters for us, and that was great, but the glasses were very dirty. So dirty in fact that I wouldn't let my daughter drink from it. I pointed this out to the waitress, she apologized and took the water glasses, but when our drink glasses came, THEY were dirty too. The food was very good. I got the Botana which I really enjoyed, and my daughter got the Tex Mex Classic Tacos - and she really enjoyed that as well. Other notables - the salsa was Fabulous. The servers though, were all sitting at the bar eating, and it was difficult to impossible to get anyone's attention when we needed something. If I was judging the food alone, this would easily be four or five stars - but the dirty floor and dirty glasses bummed me so much that I'm not sure we'll go back. Why? Because if we can see that much "dirty" how much "dirty" can't we see?

I really don't know what the fuss is about, this place is mediocre and expensive! We sat outside on the patio and had so-so service, and the food we ordered looked like a pile of slop on a plate. Chips and salsa were good, beer was cold. That's it, nothing special, there are many other restaurants that are much better food wise and less expensive. Spent $46 for drinks, dinner and a side of guac. Not going back.

Guacamole excellent. Food delicious and fresh. Plenty, enough to share. Prices fair. First visit was during soft opening early evening on Wednesday. Owner partners came by to ask us to review and comment. I like owner presence in food establishments. Had a fabulous Margarita. Easy parking in Claw son. We were impressed on how the City of Clawson actually was helping in every way to get this restaurant up & running. I can see why business owners are attracted to Clawson vs Royal Oak. Second visit was a Friday lunch for Lenten fish tacos. Food is great. Service staff in learning curve. Love to go to Clawson, MI

Food is decent, not much selection though. The salsa for the chips is much to bland for my taste. Their Chicken Quesidilla was very tasty and the Iced Margarita I got was excellent. The interior of the restaurant is very nicely done. It has promise I'll give it some time.

So far, I've been to Mojave three times since they opened. Twice for drinks, and yesterday for lunch. If you lack taste buds, this is the place for you! The house salsa they give you tastes like tomato jam, very sweet, no flavors of onion, cilantro...just sweet. We asked for other salsas (they have 5 to choose from, I believe). The smoky-hot salsa was decent, it's the only flavor I tasted that had more than one dimension. The "hot" salsa has absolutely no flavor, only heat. We sampled the queso al tequila...it tasted like pizza. Which, I like pizza, so I guess it wasn't bad...just unexpected. As for meals, I got steak and chicken fajitas, a friend got a burrito and my guy got tacos. I knew right when they sat our plates down that we had a Code Orange Tex-Mex disaster. Orange cheese on the beans. I just got served a big ol' platter of white trash Mexican. It's called queso fresco or chihuahua cheese, people. It's delicious and it is best friends with beans, tacos, fajitas and the like. The cheese that came with the fajitas was shredded cheddar and muenster. I understand that chihuahua cheese is pricey, but c'mon. To my surprise, it got worse. The steak tasted like it was cooked 2 days ago, refrigerated, nuked in the microwave, and placed on a sizzle platter. Dry, tough, and tasted like refrigerator meat. Disgusting. In another hilarious turn, the chicken was marinated in what tasted like Wishbone Italian dressing. Are you kidding me? No. No they were not. The shredded chicken in the tacos tasted pretty good (not like Italian dressing). No one was particularly impressed with their meal, however. When the waitress came back to ask how it was, we all dodged her question. No need to upset her and ruin her day. Even if we did send the food back, I doubt it would come out much different. As for drinks, I was so looking forward to a Clawson establishment that served an array of margaritas. I've tried 3 so far, the house, the pomegranate and the cervezarita. While they don't taste bad, not too sour, not too sweet, there is a distinct lack of tequila. If I suck down a $10 drink...I'd at least like the benefit of a bit of a buzz. On our first visit, it did take close to an hour for us to get our margaritas. First, we ordered cervezaritas. 20 minutes later the waitress came back and said they didn't have the "jumbo" glasses, so we had to pick something else...however they were out of pomegranate and clearly anything "jumbo" was ruled out. We order 3 house 'ritas. 35 minutes later, we had our drinks. The owner came around sometime after to ask how it was, and he said to be honest. So we were, we said it took a long time. Immediately, he was on the defensive (pet peeve of mine...), saying he didn't even know that they had the cervezarita on the menu, didn't know they didn't have the jumbo glasses, and it took so long because of computer problems. This made me wonder how restaurants ever functioned before computers came along... Conclusion: Probably won't be back...at least not for a long time. Maybe they need some tough love and time to iron things out.

Great guacamole. Fajitas were good too. Salsa is smoky and a little different than your regular salsa. Very good food! Nice attentive waitstaff as well.

I agree a lot with Matthew N. I had the same lunch with beef tacos. The meat was greasy and cafeteria like. The soup was bland as he stated too. HOWEVER, clean atmosphere and great service.

Busy spot, a bit loud. The servers did a fine job with beer and food delivery. Food was great, chicken tacos and fish tacos being the choices for the night. Don't be afraid to try this place, We found it really very good!

I really wanted to love this place. I spend alot of time in Clawson and I was very excited for a new type of restaurant. However I can honestly this will not be my new go to restaurant . My husband and I spilt a pitcher of red sangria (because they were out of white) and started with chips and salsa. The sangria was very good. The first dish of salsa was a very mild tomatoey salsa and the second was a medium with a smokey kind of heat. Both were good, as were the chips, I just didn't realize there were salsa options, they just changed colors and temps on me. We decided to split two entrees so we could try more. We had chicken fajitas and beef enchiladas poblano . It felt like it took a little while for the food to come out, but that could have been because we were at the bar on the aisle all the food comes down. It was very crowded, and there was another room closed off next door that was obviously part of the restaurant but it seemed to only be seating for the wait staffs beverage cups on a busy Friday night. Anyways, the food comes and the fajitas were ok. Chicken lacked some flavor but portions were good. However, the enchiladas' beef had a strange texture and flavor that I could not stomach. I asked the girl sitting next to us at the bar how she liked hers and her response was similar. The rice and beans were ok, the beans a bit dry. The staff seems very confused. The bartenders were nice but everyone just seems lost I am giving a two just off the sangria, chips and salsa and bartenders. I would maybe go here for a drink in the summer but I wouldn't bother with dinner.

My husband and I actually didn't try this place because of the mediocre reviews. My boss took me and a coworker here to lunch today and I'm glad he did. The place is very clean and cute. They were moderately busy and our server Bree did a great job. She was sweet and on top of recommendations, descriptions, refills, etc. My boss had the burrito, my coworker the lunch tacos, and I had the Tacos Mexicanos (steak). Theirs looked great and mine was exactly what I was hoping for. Small authentic street tacos on soft corn tortillas with cilantro, lime, and onion with beans and rice on the side. The steak was cooked perfectly and they were outstanding! We also split Guacamole which was sooo good! The chips were fresh, warm, and perfectly salty. I will definitely be coming back with the hubby!

My husband and I were very excited to hear of a new restaurant in Downtown Clawson! We love supporting local business. We went to Mojave Cantina on a Saturday evening and there was a 30 minute wait - it was packed, which was great to see! We were seated in the side room off of the main dining area. It was seriously SO loud in that room that we could not even hear each other talk. There is obviously no sound proofing in that room because everyones voices echo in that room and creates a piercing sound. Other than that, the food was good, margaritas were excellent, and we will go again - however request a seat in the main dining room!

Typical mexican food. Very loud and cramped layout. Just OK.

My family and I chose this restaurant based on some other reviews. We were not disappointed. The food here was wonderful. Very flavorful and filling. The service was pretty good. We got there just before the dinner rush. We will be going back to this place.

  • Dawn K.

Not the best...mediocre but this place has so much potential, and we locals keep returning because we want so badly for them to succeed! We've given them 3 shots. Drinks have always been good. The food is bland in my opinion. The refried beans have NO seasoning. I picked up my tacos and water literally poured out of them. Made me wonder if they start with frozen chicken and microwave it. There's not a black bean to be found in many of the dishes. (would be a great addition to their salad along with some corn , avacado, and cilantro). We will probably return simply because it's close, and it's Mexican, but I'm hoping they find some good authentic recipes and spice 'em up. On a positive note: the salsas were excellent.

We have been twice and sat at the bar both times. Ernesto, the bartender, was very pleasant both times and helpful with choices. The fish tacos are wonderful. The raspberry mojito is also very good. We enjoyed the Mexican tacos and the Mexican pizza. So far, both times were good experiences. Seem to have some fun options coming in the near future with tequila tastings and Cinco de Mayo. We will be back.

Wonderful food, attentive service. The salsa and guac are great and the chips were not at all greasy nor over-salted. The Sangria is very drinkable. Our mains were all really good - I recommend the Mexican style tacos or the enchilada poblanos. The menu is short but that gives me more confidence in the kitchen's ability to execute well. Go and enjoy.

I have been here twice now and I have been pretty pleased with the food. The last time I was there I had the chorizo tacos. They were really good, topped with caramelized onions and cilantro. My friend had the poblano enchiladas which were great! Today I had the mojave salad with the lime cilantro vinaigrette, which was simple but tastey. The staff, although very friendly, was not well versed in the limited menu. The decor is nice but the tables are crammed in. Overall the experience was good, I will be back!

Love the décor. People and service were fine. The food was bland, bland, bland. I was excited for this new restaurant. I have yet to find a great Mexican restaurant in the area after living in Phoenix for the last seven years. This was not it.

Went here last night for dinner and drinks and we really enjoyed it! I've spent some time living in Mexico and always looking for a good place to go. The chips and salsa they brought out to the table were great - the chips were really salty and the salsa had a great kick to it. Perfect for me, too spicy for my partner. I ordered a house margarita and was really happy with it. We ordered our food and it took quite a while, so they brought us another round of chips and salsa. When our food came out, my partners was perfect and mine was beef instead of chicken. When I told our waitress she was really apologetic and put in my order again, which came out with chicken this time around and super fast. By that time I was filled on chips and salsa anyways so I took half my food home. For the inconvenience, I got another house margarita. I was happy with the taste and alcohol level in here. I agree with someone's comment below that some nice mexican cheese would have been better with the meal than shredded whatever it was melted on the top. Overall, the staff was really friendly and the food was delicious - the salsa and sauces tasted truly authentic and it seemed like everything was really fresh. One of the best Mexican food experiences I've had this side of the border in quite some time.

Food is ok. Every time I've come (I think this our fourth) I've been so disappointed in the service. It's awful. I keep coming back hopeful that something has changed , but it hasn't. Our waitress asked immediately what we wanted to eat without bringing out the chips and salsa they offer free to guests. When I asked for them she was short and honestly seemed annoyed that we wanted them. When it was time to order she seemed annoyed that we wanted to split something bc we weren't starving. I had to ask for silverware when our food came. She never came to ask how our food was or if we needed a refill (which I did). She dropped off our check and didn't even say have a nice night or thank you or come back again. No smile, no personality. Nothing. As we left the manager was stuffing his face at the bar and the other servers were standing around and texting; no goodbyes, no have a nice night, nothing. I will not be returning, nor will I suggest this place to my friends.

Margarita bar that has food as an afterthought. Don't bother going past the appetizers on the menu-guac was fresh and tasty. Have your drink, have a snack. Then if you really need to eat a taco or burrito in Clawson, a better bet is the Del Taco a mile down the road.

We've been here several times and the jury is still out on this one. We chose this restaurant because Royal Oak is too crowded on a Saturday evening. My glass of wine had a swimming bug in it. I would have thought the replacement glass would have been complimentary, but it wasn't. We split a $14.00 entree, yet our bill was $30.00 (and he only drinks water!). A bit pricey, but the food is good. Will hesitate before we go back...

Have been several times and tried something new each time. Have not been disappointed yet. We like to sit at the bar and the bartender is very friendly. Drinks are great and the medium and verde salsa is very good. We have tried the steak quesadillas, sampler, ck chimis, and the fish tacos. My fave was the chimis. Guac is also great. Did not think I would like the guac with the bacon, but it was surprisingly good. We plan to return soon.

When I lived in Clawson this was a favorite of mine because I could walk from home. The drinks are good with a great selection of margaritas, the food is good and so is the service. Family owned with pride and it shows. There is plenty of room and a nice bar to sit at with TVs if you like that. Did I mention the endless chips and salsa? Their tortilla soup is awesome, as is their wet burrito. Generous portions so I always end up with a box.

Had high hopes, but left disappointed The good: The salsa, refried beans The bad: The chips tasted store bought and lacked salt (trend with this place) and didn't taste like much. I got the steak fajitas. My wife got the enchiladas. Food arrived the steak was rubbery and oddly tasted like it was reheated. Even looking at it you could tell it was cut into strips from something like a rump roast. No color on it just a sad grey.... It also didn't taste like anything. The peppers and onions were good, but when you put everything into the tortilla all you could taste was the corn tortilla. The beans were good but you can tell they are from a can. As others have said the rice is definitely from a box or something like that. It reminds me of that rice in a pouch that you hear up in a microwave. I didn't try my wife's food but she said it was just ok. ll in all everything seemed to be premise or store bought. We probably won't be back where there are so many other good Mexican places.

Pass... We eat out a lot and have tried a lot of Mexican restaurants in the area. This one was disappointing. My bf wanted to check this new place out. Nice restaurant/bar area/outdoor seating. Cute decor, large TVs around the restaurant. Location is great. Ample parking. To start off with, we ordered the special bacon guacamole- it wasn't anything special. Tasted better mixed with the salsa. Chips were good. BF ordered the $18.50 steak tampiquena- it was too chewy and his meal was disappointing. The chicken enchilada on the plate was good though. The regular guacamole had too much lemon/lime juice. My BF had to scrape it off his plate so it wouldn't touch anything else. That's how much he didn't like it. (And we both usually LOVE guacamole.) Refried beans were too salty. The rice tasted like it came out of a box. Lucky me, I got the carnitas special for $12. The pineapple mango salsa made it was sooooo good! If we ever came back, it would only be for that dish. And that's why they got a 2 star and not a 1. Waitress- didn't know the tequilas, didn't know the specials, I had to wait 2x for over 5min for drink refills (ps- other waitresses saw my empty cup but didn't do anything about it), forgot a set of tortillas (waitress said they were still cooking them, LOL) and my veggies (which came way late during my meal), and then forgot to bring the bag we asked for for our to go containers. BF wants me to add that the steak knife had to be asked for to go with his steak. We have both waited tables, we think she needs some training. :)

Mojave has some decent Mexican food and it's not the crazy busy scene you'd get downtown Royal Oak at Cantina Diablos. I enjoyed sitting outside on a nice summer evening having some sangria and burritos. Their chips and salsa were really fresh and tasty. My only negative comment would be the fact that there was no fruit in the sangria, which is kind of what makes it a sangria. But not a deal breaker. My burrito and rice and beans were very good and our server was diaper friendly.

Service and seating: seated very promptly and at a table outside like we requested. Waiter was funny and went beyond the normal call of duty as filling up our drinks, bringing is chips and answering questions on the menu items. The waiter brought two different sized boxes and let my mom select which one she would prefer and was exceedingly professional in every aspect of his job. Food: The chips and salsa were endless and pretty good. The chips were a little thin but had good taste and texture. I ordered the beef quesadilla and it was delicious. The beans given on the side for no added charge were delicious as well. Overall the restaurant was very good and exceeded my expectations on every level. If you're in the Clawson area and in the mood for Mexican I would definitely suggest this restaurant to you.

Went here when they opened at 11am and waited for someone to greet us. We noticed someone sweeping the floor and asked if they are open. He ignored us and went into the kitchen - a few moments later a gentleman asked what time it was and when we told him 11am he said "No, we are not open - we have a cook here but no server" So, we left. We ended up walking to another restaurant that was open and running....

We liked it.. Our waiter was on point.. The prices were decent and I did notice happy hour prices and such.. My drinks were yummy... I got the 3 tacos in different beefs I didn't like the 2 but the pork taco was insanely good! Made up for the others and now I know just to get all 3 pork tacos.. My boyfriend got the nachos and days later he keeps saying how he's cravin more Mojave nachos.. We will be back:)

People are nuts if they don't like this place. The portions are humongous, the drinks are humongous, it's spacious. It's not super duper authentic. So what? It's great. If a Mexican Poncho was that delectable I'd eat it. Fast service, Oakland County pricing, nicest service/management ever. We had like a goodbye processional as we left. Definitely our new spot for dinner out especially now that I'm vegan, they definitely have that covered and accommodated. Go. You won't be disappointed. Unless you expect like a dude on a donkey making you mole at your table. Then you will be.

The chips are not my favorite but the salsa was pretty good- smoky flavor with just enough spice. I ordered the black bean and corn salad. It was an extreme disappointment. It was just canned black beans and corn on top of iceberg lettuce with a few red onions thrown in. The cilantro lime dressing tasted just like oil with cilantro floating in it. Oh and there were slimy "roasted red peppers" on it too. I was only able to eat the salad by removing the peppers and putting salsa on it instead of the dressing. Overall, don't get the salad!! Maybe their other food is good.

Visited Mojave a few times, the most recent being for lunch. The food and service is decent, it's a nice location with decent parking, and although I've never been "wowed" I've never been extremely disappointed either. Personally, I like this place for lunch. Their lunch portion menu has a nice selection of their menu items, and the prices are better. I still get enough food and the bill is cheaper, which is nice considering that the food is good but not great. I love their salsa but am not a fan of their chips. The queso is a bit bland, so I'll skip that next time. The chicken in my quesadilla was cooked perfectly - not dried out at all. The tacos always look good...but it's kinda hard to mess up tacos, IMO. Food is more Tex-Mex, so if you want authentic this probably isn't your place. Also, they have a few tv's nicely placed so you can see from almost anywhere you sit. Usually have whatever Detroit team is playing on, which I appreciate. The hard floors and decor make the place seem a little loud sometimes but nothing unbearable. All in all a decent place if you're craving Tex-Mex type food.

I want to love this place but I just can't. Chips always taste like they came out of a bag and the bag might have been left open for a while. I can look past that. Enchiladas are just okay, the poblanos sauce is very bland. Enchiladas are my favorite and I just can't order them here. The only positive note is that the fajitas are good and have lots of flavor. But the worst is their margaritas. I don't know what their recipe is but it definitely needs help. I shouldn't gag after every sip but I also don't want to waste it because of the price.

I had the Ranchero Chili Enchiladas and my girlfriend had the Mojave Chicken Salad. The enchilada tortillas were a touch soggy but the meal was otherwise good. This could have been a result of our order sitting for a few minutes in the carry out window. The salad was a little bland but the lettuce was crisp. The lime cilantro vinegarette dressing probably would have brought some nice zest to the salad but it was all oil --probably a result of not shaking it before serving. Overall, the food wasn't terrible but there it could have been better. I am thinking we might give it another go sometime in the future. Probably as dine in.

  • Mike G.

Probably the furthest from authentic Mexican you can find. Overpriced and barely a notch above Del Taco a short drive down the road. Be careful of "hidden upsells" that conveniently miss being included on the menu (things like requesting half beef half chicken in the burrito translates to "add beef, $3"). Drinks are not consistent with Clawson pub/restaurant area pricing. You would do yourself a HUGE favor to head east down 14 mile rd to Grand Azteca. Seriously.

This place is amazing!! Best Mexican Food in Michigan!! This place really cares about cleanliness by always keeping things spotless. My favorite is the shrimp fajitas and mojave sampler! Margaritas are great and cheap since I only need one to feel tipsy! Go see Amber at the bar...she's super nice and cute. I've had the best of times hanging out here with my Clawson peeps. Can't wait for the patio to open!!

I'm not quite sure where all other reviewers who raved about the food ate, but it surely wasn't Mojave Cantina. The service was great. The waitress was both friendly and upbeat; if only the cool had the same enthusiasm about their food that the waitress had in serving us. They seem to use a cheap, low moisture cheese that doesn't melt (except under high temperatures), the rice was water logged and tasted like a bad packet of pre-cooked rice you find on a grocery shelf, and the beans are straight from a can. The chips and salsa were good, but the salsa tasted slight like mildew "fridge smell" (I apologize that this is the best analogy I have). The chicken in my enchiladas was ok, but the tortillas were sub par and the cheese in my girlfriend's enchiladas did not seem correct as it wasn't melted properly and seemed more like the same shredded cheese that had also not melted on top. Better quality cheese (as well as selecting the appropriate cheese for a menu item), more flavor, and more passion for cooking (such an easy menu) and I would return.

My review of Mojave Cantina is long over due. We have visited this restaurant on several occasions. It is close to home and satisfies my craving for Mexican food when I don't want to drive to downtown Detroit or out to Lake Orion. One must remember this is more tex-mex than true Mexican. One of our favorite items are the Taco Mexicano which we get with grilled chicken. You get three small corn tortillas filled with chicken, grilled onions, and cilantro. These are served with beans and rice. These really are delicious, especially when the chicken is hot and fresh. I also like Felipe's corn and black bean salad with grilled chicken. Its a delicious light salad. The queso is also very good. I do have a couple complaints to share. The cost of the queso is 7.50, which is pretty pricy for a 1/4 cup of cheese. We ordered it once as a carry out and the waitress brought me a Styrofoam cup, which even looked less than a 1/4 cup and no chips! I had to ask for them and she looked at me like I was an alien requesting chips with the queso. Their rice has changed recently and I'm not sure I am loving it and in the past month on two separate visits the chicken in the Taco Mexicanos was dry and it was quite clear it had sat around for awhile. Not sure if they are having issues in the kitchen or a new chef, but I hope they figure it out. Oh and last but not least, the margaritas on happy hour are cheap, but for a reason, I think they skip the alcohol!

When here for lunch about a week ago and already going back. Had the sampler appetizer and a peach margarita (yes on my lunch hour) appetizer was good, drink was excellent. Patio seating was available but weather conditions kept us inside which was just as nice. Staff was friendly and our waiter was great. Today I'll probably try an actual entree. We will see how it goes the second time around.

My co-workers took me here for lunch to celebrate my pending nuptials. The atmosphere was nice and friendly. One co-worker wanted a TV changed due to it being March Madness and the manager had no problem doing so. The restaurant let my co-workers decorate the tables with balloons and other goodies. Most everyone seemed to get the quesadillas, as did. The quesadilla came with rice and beans which were pretty good. The lunch specials were great, lot of food, and responsible price. My fiancé and I after we ate said we had to come back here for dinner.

What do you get when a half Chaldean-half Greek guy opens a Mexican restaurant? Mediocre "Mexican" food. I'll start my review by complimenting the waitstaff, our server was quite prompt, refilling my beverage generously, and was polite. I ordered a sort of sampler meal, it had a rib eye steak, 4 quesadillas, and a shredded chicken chimi. The steak was dry and bland, the "chef" seems to have the same exact grilling skills as my father. The quesdilllas were soaking wet, thrown into the steak juices radiating out of the meat. The shredded chicken chimi was merely a flour tortilla featuring shredded chicken, topped with what seemed to be Prego pasta sauce, and a few sprinkles of the ol' shredded cheese. My wife had some weird dish, I accidentally talked her out of getting the "Mexican" dishes there, which perhaps was for the best. She said she liked it, but she had one of those looks your spouse gives you when they're lying. We consumed no alcohol, my gal had water and I, a diet coke. (I prefer the taste to regular, not cutting cals) and our bill was $50.00. I generally have absolutely no issue paying twice that for meals on a once weekly basis, but for that I would have rather had Taco Bell, I've had better attempts at "Mexican" food there, honestly. To those of you who consider this food in anyway "Authentic Mexican", than you truly have never lived. Stay on 14 Mile for about 9 more miles, El Charro's is on the right.

Probably the worst meal I've ever had and it pains me to say that. I have wanted to eat here since it opened and now I understand why I should have waited. To start the salsa was great and the chips are a bit greasey. I ordered the flautas which were incredibly disappointing. Four flautas with guacamole on top and the rest of the plate was just beans, lettuce, and rice. They felt cheap and I've had better taquitos from 7/11 and out of the microwave. My dad ordered a wet chicken burrito in which half of it was ground beef. During our time no manager came by to notice our disappointment in the food. I do not and will not recommend this restaurant to anyone I know. If you want to know how to do flautas right check out Cafe Tutu Tango in Orlando, Floor.

Best place for Mexican food outside of Mexican Town. The burrito with steak was very moist and tasty and my wife loved the taco salad. I am well aware that these dishes are generic American Mexican and to get authentic you need to be able to see the Ambassador bridge but Metro Detroit, it's pretty good.

Still the best Mexican food in the area. I have tried many of the dishes on the menu and have always been happy. The biggest problem I have is not being completely full of chips and salsa before my meal gets there. This has become a family favorite!

Okay, I understand this place has a three star rating but I have no idea why. The place is clean, the service is good, and the food is actually excellent. The chili was sublime, meaty and complex with tons of flavor. The table side chips were fresh and homemade, the salsa perfect with a nice smokey quality and a good dash of Cilantro. I had the chorizo botana for an entree and I couldn't finish it, it was simply excellent. If you want to try a New Mexican place this is a very good option. I loved this meal. Plus they had negro modelo on draft, what is wrong with that?

Mojave has quietly become our go to establishment- close, easy parking, good food and beer. Wait, that was until a recent change. Much to my chagrin, they have replaced the locally brewed Brick Red with Miller Lite. Will return one more time and if this is a permanent decision I think you can find us at Renshaw or Main Street.

My first visit and I hope there will be more. The restaurant was a nice size, we got seated immediately at a comfortable high top table on a Friday night, so we were happy right off the bat, having left another place with a 30 minute wait. We started with regular margarita's - one with salt, one without, they got that right and they tasted good. I ordered chicken enchiladas, my bf went for tacos and got one of each, chicken, beef & chorizo, it's nice that they let you mix it up. I was really happy with my choice and he said his tacos were delicious. I also ordered a small guacamole and added it to my enchiladas, the guac was really tasty. The only thing I wasn't crazy about were the chips - I thought they tasted stale and were kind of hard and the salsa didn't do much for either of us. But - that was minor, the main course is why you're there. Service was good and the prices aren't mexicantown cheap, but then again we only had to drive 1 mile, not 18, so that wins for me.

I had a positive experience here last night! Stopped up for a friends birthday, by the time I got there from school, the place was empty, and our group of 10 were pretty much the only people in there, so our service was excellent. Alberto (I think) took care of us cheerfully, and I had a Cerveza-Rita...which was great! I also had a queso dip and chips, it was different from what I was expecting..but not bad. I was there with authentic & certified Mexican and Mexican American friends... MA's love this new dive, but the M's thought it was okay, not the most authentic, but they are literally straight from the heart of Mexico, so they gave them their good graces, as nothing is going to be just like home. I did notice things were salty...salty chips, and I did try a bite of the beans, which one of the MA's stated to her cousin the (other MA) that these beans were not like their Grandmas....too salty. I would definitely go back to try more food items, It's in a great location, and it had a great vibe.. Happy hour anyone? :)

07/2014. 2-stars. I was so excited to see a new restaurant in downtown Clawson, but disappointed with the experience here. As some other reviewers complain, the food & service are below average & a little overpriced for what you're getting. To their credit, there's a happy hour & outdoor seating, plus the beer options are ok. If you just want to drink outside in Clawson (the only thing I can really recommend here), there are better options with better service within walking distance. 2015 update. 1-star. I love downtown Clawson & decided this place was worth a second try. Really disappointed. Numerous dirty tables hadn't been bussed, with food & plates left on them. The floors were dirty. The staff were just lingering around, not attending to the seated customers or cleaning the tables of the ones that had left.

I went for lunch on a weekend in November. For expected Tex Mex, it was a decent spot. Chips and salsa on the table, the standard beers on tap, and the cheesy fried goodness you expect and want from a TM restaurant. Matt got a burrito that was literally the size of his head. There was a mix up in the kitchen with the tortilla soup (they made the batch too salty and had to remake the whole batch before it ever appeared at the table), so our waitress informed me of the wait and the final product was good. And I appreciated not getting something i would have wanted to return. I wouldn't go out of my way to bring someone here to try it, but I'd definitely come back.

We went here because this establishment was the choice of one of our friends who was having a goodbye (moving) party. The only thing that I can say is, why in the heck haven't I found this place sooner! Since I am vegetarian, I ordered the bean enchiladas that was covered in a mild green sauce with cheese. This dish was so good that I was craving for it the next day. The cheese is very light tasting and the beans were flavourful. My kids ordered the steak tacos and ate all of it! - which they normally never finish their dishes. We will be back!

We have visited this restaurant on several occasions. It is one of the few remaining Mexican restaurants in the area. We ate here with our kids, ages 3 and 5. The kids loved the guacamole. I had the chicken fajitas. They were very good and the order was enough for two people to split. My wife had tacos, which were good too. We like this place and especially the outdoor seating when the weather is nice.

This place was good! We came here on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy at all, no wait at all. The inside is super casual and kind of weirdly designed. The salsa you get is actually really good! I got enchiladas I believe and they were just fine. My boyfriend got a burrito with a stewed pork or beef or something. I tried some if his and did not like it at all. It was completely overpowered by cinnamon. To me it was inedible. The bf fought through some of it before he had enough of the sweetness. Not a fan of that. Overall I would try this place again some time. I wouldn't go out of my way though.

My husband and I drove past Mojave Cantina on our way to Clawson Steakhouse. We turned around once we got there because we thought Mexican food sounded great and we had been meaning to come here. When we stepped into the restaurant, we started doubting our decision. It took a few minutes for the manager to come seat us, and during that time we heard a waitress yell at a bartender and watched another waitress stop and stare at us before wandering off. Once seated we realized this place is LOUD. It's hard to have a conversation with normal indoor voices. That was a major turn-off. The service was mediocre, too, which left us feeling funny about the whole place. My margarita tasted like it came from a mix. My steak fajitas came out on one of those sizzling platters except it wasn't sizzling -- not even a little! This is probably just my conditioning because I have eaten at many, many midwest Tex-Mex places, but honestly, that is just how people do fajitas. If fajitas come out on a non-sizzling platter, you're doing something wrong. The fajitas were also really strongly flavored -- lots of chili powder, or something like that -- and it was fine but not my taste. The flour tortillas are definitely not made in-house. My husband liked his enchiladas poblanos well enough, and he finished both his and my portion of beans and rice. The salsa was smoky and good. We might come back because it's the best dine-in Mexican place we've found in this area, which is really more of a statement about Mexican food in Metro Detroit than the quality of food here.

I hate to give bad reviews but the food here was really disappointing. Most of our meal seemed to be lower quality food than I expected for the higher prices. The restaurant itself had a great atmosphere and was comfortable. The waitstaff was very nice and did a great job. We sat outside which was nice and clean. I stated with a margarita which may not have even had tequila in it, I couldn't tell it was too sweet. We ordered guacamole with our chips and salsa which was not bad but there were large, solid chunks of not quite ripe avocado so it was a challenge to get onto a chip. I ordered the Tacos Mexicanos with pork and chorizo. The chorizo had good flavor but reminded me of taco bell quality. The pork was dry and I didn't eat much of it. The rice and beans were dry and had clearly sat on the plate for much longer than we were even there. Again, I hate to give a bad review because I want Clawson to have good business but this place needs to step up their food quality if they want to stick around. Overall the place was nice but the food was not worth going back for.

It was very crowded on a recent Friday night, but we gave it a try. My memories? Too many TVs. I tried to behave and have a dinner salad only. But the salad tasted exactly like it came out of one of those Doles salad bags from Kroger. Most of it simply not worth eating. Felt exciting and popular, but once was enough for me.

For a change of venue from Grand Azteca I thought I'd give this place a shot. It was pretty decent...not amazing but pretty good all around. I tried their white sangria which was fruity without having any actual fruit in the glass...kind of like a yellow Hawaiian Punch. Their salsa is made in house from what I could tell and I think they use roasted veggies...it was mild but nicely done. I liked it...and with their guacamole it was a great start. I ordered the Tacos Mexicanos...three al pastor pork tacos with dual soft shell tortillas and rice and beans, with limes on the side. The tacos were filled nicely and the meat was tender with fresh ingredients and the rice and beans were great. I'd order these again...for $10 I got a decent amount of food. It's nothing fancy or spectacular but they do a nice plate of Mexican food. That said, I'd like to see a little more creativity but this isn't Imperial. Service was very friendly and attentive and seating was mostly comfortable except for the tables by the pole, which were very wobbly. Worth a try but you don't need to go out of your way to get here right away

It's Saturday night so I called ahead to make reservations for the fam and was told there wouldn't be a wait so we gladly skipped over and were welcomed by the ever-so-friendly staff! We were promptly seated and I couldn't help but fall in love with the whole ambiance of the place. The place was packed and that could only mean one thing- great food! But before I get to that , we have to talk about the amazing service! Our waitress, Cynthia was fantastic! She constantly kept our waters full and was very knowledgeable about their menu. The owners came out and asked how everything was and were actually roaming around and talking to their guest which I love! Like I said, super friendly! They also give you chips and home made salsa which were great! Now about the food- I actually let her pick out my meal for me since I'm not a picky eater and was surprised on the quality of food. I had the enchiladas poblanos with beef and they were superb! Everything from the sauce on top to the side of beans was a great price and great meal. The fam all loved their meals as well. The churizo tacos were tasty! I'm so glad we finally have a great family owned place that's actually local! Definitely would recommend this place and will be going back! If you care to see pictures be sure to check out my Instagram account for a better look at the meal! @tasteofmichigan :)

I'm going 3.5 on this place (3 star) Had a great lunch here. Nothing to write home about, but the food was good, service was nice. I think to be a 4 star they'd have to have something really special that would get my ass off the couch to go visit them again. With that being said i'd totally stop there for lunch if i was in the area.

They rocked Cynco de mayo!! Drinks came fast. service and the food was great!! The wait to get a table was deff worth it. Bartender and waitresses where asking if we wanted drinks as we were waiting for a table witch I also thought was awesome. even though they were so busy they still had time to take care of us standing there I recommended this place. It's a clean, very friendly staff. I will be back in no time!!!!

God awful! Michigan gringo Mex all the way. Don't waist your money on this place! Chipotle Mexican Grill has them beat on flavor and I'm not comparing this place to authentic Mexican cuisine that you would find at Mi Pueblos or in Mexico. If I did that... they would get half a star. Let me start with the salsas. Tired three of their salsas and there was really no difference between them none whatsoever with the exception of slight hotness and even then it wasn't anything to mmm about. But what was so gross is the tomato skin that was present in all three salsas. When making a fired roasted tomato salsa you always remove the skin after broiling or fire roasting the tomatoes. Simply score the tomatoes before broiling and the skin pretty much comes off, then discard the skin before blending the tomatoes into the salsa paste. The guacamole, don't bother it's just a mashed avocado with a sprinkler of tomato and cilantro on top. Yikes! On to the food... so I ordered the Tacos Mexicano dinner which wasn't really anything to rave about. The refried beans were obviously from a can, the rice almost tasted like Rice-A-Roni Spanish Rice but that was a hit. The grilled chicken on the tacos lacked the slightest taste of any mexican seasonings or seasoning period. The person that was with me... also from San Diego ordered the Enchiladas. After the first bite she looked at me and said "this tastes like lasagna or pizza", They must of put pizza sauce or some kind of marinara on it. She asked me to taste it and sure enough it was a heavy tomato sauce with lots of oregano which made it taste so much like pizza. To top it off they used mozzarella cheese in and out with a flour tortilla. I'm not going to give you the recipe on enchiladas but they really screwed this one up beyond belief. I would never recommend this place to anyone nor will I ever return. The only reason I'm giving this place a two star is because of the waitress was so nice and apologetic.

My wife was cool enough to take la familia out for some grub tonight and what a bonus.....she took us here again! Met the owner and his partner (presumably "business" partner) who were beyond cool. He is a MSU grad so he must be pretty smooth. The owner's daughter waited on us. (GREAT service!) Another terrific experience. Looking forward to my leftovers tomorrow with some college football. Uh....Shadoobie. This place is awesome.

Don't see the reason for all these reviews giving more then 3 stars? Rice was only warm as were the beans that tasted like they weren't cook enough, guessing they came straight from a can? My Burrito was rolled like Taco Bell where you eat through one ingredient to the next. The rest of my party of 5 didn't think their meals were any better. None of us felt the food had any flavor? None of us felt we would come back.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!! The atmosphere is LOUD, can hardly hear someone from across the table, everyone talking in the restaurant creates the most god awful echoing. The food was inedible. I had the chicken quesadillas. Literally there was NO TASTE. it was a tortilla, grilled chicken and cheese. It was bland. It came with a side of shredded lettuce and tomatoes. There was no sour cream, guacamole or anything to give any type of flavor. The only decent thing about this place was the salsa. At least it was homemade. The chips are straight out of a bag. There was live music on Tuesday when I went. It was one redeeming thing about this place. Service was pretty good as well.

Food was not very good, The service was worse. In a slow lunch hour you seen the server standing around instead of coming by refilling waters or asking if you needed anything. None of the service were very friendly or hospitable.

So dissatisfied, just left this place, everything was bland, bland, bland! My Sangria was like watered down juice, the taco shells were swimming in oil, I literally wrapped my napkin around them to dry, the chorizo was red, but had no taste at all, the chicken was dry and not seasoned... I had high hopes, I so wanted a good Mexican food hangout so close to home, I'll drive to Mexican village, the 2's are for the waitress.

I went to lunch with my mom at Mojave Cantina yesterday. Here's the breakdown: The good: The tortilla soup was FANTASTIC. So yummy. Well worth the $2 upcharge. Seriously - I could have had a bowl of that and been satisfied. The decor was nice. They had a lunch menu. The chips were hot and yummy. The waiter refilled my water without me asking. The prices were very reasonable. The bad: The food was kind of...bland. I like a little kick to my Mexican food (not a ton, but a little heat isn't a bad thing). The salsa was homemade. It was smoky and blah. The chicken in my burrito was also lacking spice. I added hot sauce to almost everything, which helped. I think they've still got a few bugs to work out. I'll give them a try in a few months and see if things improve.

I was really excited to try this new restaurant. I was surprised to see my friend and I were the only people in there on a Thursday night. My first impression of the food was that it took way too long to prepare. Who else are you cooking for? It was only us. The chicken quesadillas were really good! They had lots of meat and cheeses. The sides that came with it though were very disappointing. Tasteless beans and rice that was cold and chewy. They also come with some lettuce and chopped up tomatoes. If you wanted a little cup of sour cream... Add .50. It cost me over $10. For just a quesadilla? Really.. My friend got the enchiladas which I thought were so boring and they were cold! I gave this place another chance today but once again it was empty and our waitress was not were accommodating. Boo! HI asked if there was anything else I could have instead of the beans and rice and she said they had a corn and black bean salad but that was it. Much to my surprise it was very tasty. But she didn't offer anything else to me to make me happy. I'm paying $10 for a quesadilla. Your restaurant is empty!!!! COME ON. The food was good but I don't think this place will last very long with the prices they charge and the overall quality of the food.

Loved the fish tacos!! The taco has a nice size fillet with crunchy coleslaw sprinkled on top...I only had two tacos but I was filled up. The place was clean, waitress was very on top of our table. Someone else had the Mojave salad and raved about it. $4.00 margaritas....?I!?!?!? I will be back:)

This review is meant to be more of a 2.5 stars, but I couldn't bring myself to give it an A-OK rating. We arrived around 5:30-ish on a Sunday evening, and although we were seated promptly, I was doubting our dining choice before I even sat down. First, it was LOUD, not just "people dodging the 90-degree heat and enjoying their margaritas" loud, but "frat boy sports bar with the Tigers in town" loud. Second, our table was crammed so close to the adjacent one, I LITERALLY could not squeeze into my seat until my husband moved the other table's chairs (thankfully uninhabited) without any assistance or apology from the hostess. Normally I wouldn't complain about tables being tight but...when I say "literally," I mean I LITERALLY was unable to squeeze into the two inches of space allowed between the seat back and the table. Thank goodness for my husband's maneuvering, because when that table was seated shortly thereafter, I'm sure I would have been accidentally bashing skulls with our fellow diners. Then we sat and waited for quite a while before a waitress (who was very friendly) approached our table. We both ordered margaritas, and my husband's came out wrong. He gamely told the server that it was fine...at some point, a margarita is just a margarita, and those weren't what we were there for (good thing, since I think the booze was measured out with teaspoons). The chips were good, the complimentary salsa was decent, but luckily we ordered the small guacamole and it was DELICIOUS. The flavor was absolutely excellent, and I'd highly recommend it. I ordered chicken fajitas and I can definitely say they bring you plenty of food, although only three small tortillas. I'm sure they would have brought more if I'd asked, but I was thinking "to-go" at that point. The amount of filling for your fajita vastly outweighs the wrappers they initially provide. My husband ordered a burrito, and said that although it was good, it was nothing to write home about. Two margaritas, small guac, chicken fajitas, and a burrito came to just over $47 before tip. A bit pricey and I doubt we'll be back. I'd recommend it for a happy-hour after-work drinky and guac snack, though.

Mojave Cantina is the perfect Mexican restaurant in the area. It's chill enough to get away from the hussle bussle of life. The decor is simple enough to encourage conversations with your party. Their salsa served with warm tortilla chips has a smokey flavor (similar to Miguel's Cantina). It is not spicy, and has just the right amount of heat. They have the perfect size menu, with everyone's favorite Mexican dish. When you order a dish, you also have the option of ordering a side of one of 5 (or 6?) salsas - these vary in heat from mild, to extra hot (pico de gallo, verde, caliente, etc). The guacamole is perfectly balanced, the margaritas are wonderfully tart, and the service is exceptional.

Nice service, cozy place but food is flat. Salsa and guac are pretty bland. Steak and chicken fajitas tasted like they were cooked yesterday. I would consider it above average ambience with below average food. Maybe some of their other dishes are better.

People are crazy, this place is good. I'll tell you what, I like it better than Grand Azteca, Camelias, or Juan's Hacienda. I still like Mi Pueblo in Mexicantown the best but this is a great option when we don't want to drive down there. The chips aren't my fave, I like thinner ones, but their salsas were fresh and flavorful. My husband got the chimichangas dinner and I got the enchiladas Rojas. We each got them with a mix of beef and chicken. Our beef wasn't greasy and our chicken was flavorful. His chimis came with a large dollop of guac on top and were drizzled with sour cream. The accompaniments of refried beans and rice were alright. The rice was bland but I feel like it is at most Mexican restaurants. I liked the beans. They had a bit more substance than the runny ones you usually receive. We weren't in the mood to drink but they have a lot of options for you. A long list of margaritas plus many draft and bottled/canned beers to choose from. They didn't have any drink specials yet but both traditional and late-night happy hours would get us to come back. I think this is a great addition to the Clawson restaurant scene and worth a visit!

Food was pretty good, a little pricey for what you got but not bad. The service was so so. They seemed nice but just not really friendly. The place was clean and for being in downtown Clawson it had free parking in back. Over all it was not bad and could be good if they lowered their prices by a buck or two or kept them the same and just improved their quality or recipies.

Overpriced, flavorless, bland food. Overall I left feeling ripped off. I will never return here again. They say hunger is the best spice, and arriving hungry, everything still tasted bland and lacking of any trace of seasoning. I knew I was eating something but couldn't taste anything. The chicken was by far the worst part of the meal. It had an odd chewy texture to it that had an artificial feel to it. The refried beans seemed to come from a can. When I dine out, I expect to have an experience I couldn't otherwise have at home. And for $14 per person, you'd expect flavor and fresh ingredients. At home, we make amazing, organic, crunch wrap supremes with fresh ingredients and grease free. Why couldn't that be replicated in a professional kitchen with, I'm assuming, a chef with a culinary arts degree/education?! Mexican cuisine is not that difficult... Meat, cheese, and tortilla! Oh and probably exotic spices from the region such as salt and pepper. I really felt terrible about my experience there. Spending so much money on mediocre food and leaving so much of it left on my plate. I couldn't go through with another bite. I think what bothered me the most about the experience was my waitress' reaction to taking my plate away. She wasn't fazed at all seeing how much was left on the plate. As if she was used to taking full plates away. Additionally, she never asked how it was. She knew... She knew what this was... My family and I vowed to never return to this place. Roto-Rooter will be sending a bill regards from my wife.

We often want cheap food and a buzz, so we go to Grand Azteca on 14 and John R. Open this week, Mojave Cantina has better flavor with less "make your stomach hurt crap"! They make their own beans and rice full of flavor and without the use of animal fats. Five stars. Street tacos had carmalized onions. Delicious and half the price of similar places in Royal Oak. One of the best places in Royal Oak/ Clawson area to have dinner and watch the sunset, but some shades might be a good idea. This is a new favorite. I look forward to summer and hopefully a patio. Huge space and full bar featuring Michigan made products. They are figuring it out wonderfully. Please support small business and Michigan made, dine here. I hope they buy into a local CSA to source local produce this summer! The wait staff made you feel like you were at a five star. Can't wait to welcome summer here!

A full fajita platter heaped up with peppers, onions, steak and chicken! It was very flavorful, loved the diced tomatoes too. I mean who doesn't love having so much to pile on? Not too worried here about authenticity. I just want fresh, tasty mexican and not a plate of saucy mess that maybe got microwaved. Their salsa was fresh and flavorful too. My sister's mexican cobb was fresh and she loved it. My grace-mom's chimichanga was good, she was very happy with it. And since I am gluten sensitive when they said they were out of corn tortillas they got me nice big lettuce leaves to use. I was thrilled!! GOOD JOB!! I wanted our waitress to be a bit more engaged with us, we were having a great time and celebrating a birthday which she didn't seem too interested in being too friendly but she took good care of us. Drink selections were plentiful too. I have to go back to try the enchiladas, can't wait! Also love the windows and bright ambiance. I will be back, more than I should. Good thing warm weather is here so I can jog the calories off. Oh and abundant avocados in things sure makes my mouth water, this place is doing it right. I will post again after I try the enchiladas.

Mojave Cantina is good to have in the area. I like it more than than Cantina Diablo and Azteca. I've had two of their taco offerings including the taco mexicano's and the tex mex classic which were both pretty good albeit basic. I had their burrito with pulled chicken yesterday and it was fresh but the chicken lacked flavor. Their salsas are better than average with their salsa diablo being my favorite. Make sure to ask about the different types of salsa they have because the servers don't mention them. Mojave's fajitas were also legit and do come recommended. I have yet to experience their fairly extensive tequila menu but look forward to slamming some shots on their patio this summer. They could be a little more generous with their portions of meat but that's just me being greedy. In this economy, I'd say their portions were fair. Pro's (1) Pretty good and slightly upscale mexican food in a convenient location. (2) Fantastic atmosphere and a great layout with clean surroundings. (3) Wonderful wait staff who are attentive and friendly. Con's (1) It's pretty much guaranteed that the rice and beans will be served lukewarm. (2) Management looks at customers as walking dollar bills instead of humans. (3) You can drive a mile down the street to El Guanaco for cheaper food and better quality.

I love the shrimp tacos! The fajitas are "okay" but probably wouldn't drive too far to eat here. The frozen margaritas are decent; and the prices are exceptional at happy hour.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
