I'm bummed, I had a great review written for Lai Thai and my phone froze up, so I'm looking for the words to write this one... LOL I went there on Friday, April 29th around 2pm... I took Friday off and after stem cleaning the carpet, shopping for my 6yo daughter's birthday and fixing a lean in the kitchen sink, figured it was time for a nice, hearty lunch. I felt like Thai, and since the place I used to love down the street left my pocket book quite thin from the last visit, decided to give Lai Thai a chance to win my business. The last time I ate there was 2 years ago, so I went in with mid-expectations... From the moment I walked in, I remember why I didn't really care for eating in. The booths are somewhat tight and kind of a bear to get into for this 250lb dude. LOL I order 2 spring rolls and the lunch order of Pad Cashew with Chicken and HOT... Gotta have it super spicy at thai.. LOL Well, they brought out some soup that was similar to a hot and spicy, but the waitress had no clue what the name was. She said, "He just threw it together this morning." I thought "wth?", but just let it go. I was just ok, nothing really special at all... Next, my 2 very well done spring rolls came out smoking hot & petrified. Literally.... I crunched my way through them, Thank God for the duck sauce and finally my Pad Cashew came... The first thing I noticed was the plate was smaller than I remember. Overall, it tasted good, but was not spicy at all... Needless to say, it was not the kind of lunch I had envisioned... :-(

My first time visited here for take out lunch. I ordered chicken pad thai. Even though the lady took my order was not friendly at all barely said anything to me, the food was really good...so I'm happy what I paid for. The portion was little smaller than other thai places in the area, so i give 3 stars.

Great home-style thai food in a family-run restaurant.

Usually good, it seems like I've been getting a bit of attitude lately, and I don't know why. I walked in and sat in a booth. After 10 minutes of waiting, the owner asks if she can help me. "Um, if like to order? Am I sitting in the wrong spot?" 'No, you sit where you like' she responded. I ordered and she immediately brought the spring roll over. A few minutes later, my red chicken curry arrived. It's a lot more bland than the previous times that I've ordered it. It tasted like the chicken was just tossed in a minute before serving, and no flavors really blended together. She doesn't speak to me. I hear her jokingly talk with the other customers at the table, just never says a word to me. Even when she just brought over my bill, she didn't say a word. I had to ask for a box, though she just asked the only other table if they needed one. Anyway.. Normally I'd call this place my second favorite Thai place to eat (second to my mom's Thai cooking) but the more I come here, the less impressed I am. She at least said thank you and goodbye after leaving her a 40% tip.

Pad Thai was excellent.... Service with a smile.... Curry dish was great... Best Thai in the area....

Best Thai in the area. After living in Bangkok for 2 years, we have struggled to find authentic Thai food in metro Detroit. We found it here! Fabulous place.....now only if they had mango and sticky rice!

A friend and I went here to enjoy what we thought would be good Thai food, but were sadly disappointed. The Tom Yum soup just had raw mushrooms and three shrimps. The Pad Thai was decent, but the dish my friend ordered was literally ramen noodles. Considering I have travelled to Thailand my expectations can be a little high, but Lai Thai had to be the worst Thai food I have had in the States.

We went on a Sunday evening and the food was very good. It tasted fresh and it was more than enough. I believe 2 people could easily share. My husband did mention that his soup was better than when he comes during lunch. The service was quick and friendly. We will defiantly come back. The only reason it is not getting 5 stars, is that our heart is still stuck in our old place in CT. Otherwise it would have earned 5 :-)

My first time, I had a curry fried rice for lunch. The portion size decent for lunch and the cost was inexpensive. You get a small cip of soup too. The main issue is the ingredients and how they are different from other Thai places. Cashews, pineapple bits were put in the fried rice. The taste was not great but not bad. The food was not spicy at all even though I asked f or Medium+. It was also warm but not hot. I enjoyed better Curry fried rice at other Thai restaurants.

I've never had a dine-in experience here before, but i can say that the carry-out is very quick and easy, and they have some very delicious Pad Thai. I order mine with Chicken and it's always cooked perfectly.

The only reason for 3 stars is the poor customer service. The owner during slow hours is sometimes rude. The pad Thai is excellent, spring rolls great - in a strip mall it's decorated good thai designer inside. Tea was fresh. Take out is packaged well.

I have been here a few times. The place has great Thai Food. The Gang Ped and other Vegetables with Chicken with shrimp are good. I tend to like my dishes medium + and the spicy is done just right. The Spring rolls are also good. Good place for takeout or dine in. I have found other locations that are not as expensive.

Cheaper and better than the more sung about Thai place down the road. It is an especially good steal for lunch. The food here is cooked as you like it. Extra cilantro, no worries. Extra garlic, great. Extra hot, ummmm you might wanna rethink. Portions are big. Service is good and friendly. I have tried a variety of items over the years and have never been disappointed. Food is never greasy or heavy. I really like anything with the perfect fried tofu. The spirit and river noodles are good. I like the green curry, pad khing, pad gra praw and the sriracha fried rice. Spring rolls are crisp, I like the curry puffs and satay is nice. In the summer the yum apple salad is so refreshing. I especially love the desserts in here, tiny little baked ramekins of custard and coconut ice cream yum.

Not sure if the cook was just tired or lazy, but the prik beef that I ordered was kinda bland and the sauce was watery. Service was okay though. The food needs more seasoning.

My worst experience among all the Thai restaurants I've ever been to. The service is so horrible that made me wonder if I should just get up and leave. The waitress was literally droping the plates on the table. Didn't even had the courtesy to ask if the food was good, anyways the food was nothing to be proud of. I would rather go hungry than to eat at Lai's Thai. Damn you yelp I don't want to give a star but you forced me.

My coworker and I decided to give this place a try today. Both of us are big fans of Thai Cafe on Main in Plymouth, especially their peanut sauce, so we like to compare. I was very excited to see that they had Pra Ram Long Song on the menu. I haven't seen it anywhere except Thai Cafe (one of my fav dishes). The peanut sauce was very similar and yummy! I ordered mild to play it safe this time, but will definitely order medium next time. It could use a little more flavor or kick, not sure which it needs. The broccoli was very fresh and crunchy, which is a big plus in my book. The soup that came with our lunch was just okay. I think it was the ramen noodles that turned me off. Even though it's been about 15 years since I lived off of ramen noodle, I am still sick of it. The fresh cilantro was very nice though. Service was a bit slow, but they were busy and only had 1 server. This has to be the largest dining area I've seen in a Thai restaurant lately. Not that I have been to every single one in the metro Detroit area, but that seems to be the trend. Our waiter was very nice. Prices are a little less than the places in Plymouth, but the portions are also a little smaller. Not a bad thing though. It just means I will be able to eat my entire entree instead of taking leftovers. I only gave it 3 stars for now because it was our 1st visit. We will definitely be back to try again!

I have many fond memories of Lai Thai, as it was one of the first Thai restaurants I had ever tried. I'm happy to report the food is every bit as authentic and consistent as those early visits were more than 10 years ago. As I mentioned above, I've been coming to Lai Thai for more than a decade. I started meeting my mother here for lunch during summers off from school and often stopped in to pick up their Tom Yum soup when I had a craving for the spicy, lemony soup (I only get it with the fried tofu!). Everything here is consistent, is reasonably authentic and has been family run and owned as long as I've been going there. My favorites are the Pad Prik, the Tom Yum, the Yellow Curry with Shrimp and their Potato Curry Puffs. You are always provided a soup of the day during lunch hours and dinner prices are very reasonable. The family that owns it is absurdly friendly, and if you're in more than once, they'll no doubt remember you and strike up a conversation. They never fail to ask me how my mom is doing and warn me that I always ask for too much spice in my food. It's very small, is always crowded during lunch (usually with the Japanese, Indian and Arabic businessmen from around the area who know and seek out the authentic spices and ingredients Lai Thai is known for), so bring your patience. Food is always out quick. They're great with substitutions, a reminder that it's made fresh. Great prices, incredibly consistent and locally owned and operated are the recipe for success here. If you're out Ikea way, keep driving past it down Ford Rd. past the big box chain restaurants and make a Right into the strip mall where you'll see Murray's Discount Auto and McDonalds. Nestled between Murray's and a Middle Eastern Restaurant, you'll find a little slice of Canton Thai heaven.

Ok. I thought maybe my first review was a little harsh, so I stopped by here again to see how things were. I was seriously craving the Tawana Noodle dish. I am writing this review from the parking lot. Why? Because this sort of "exceptional" service needs to be shared. I stood there for 5 minutes and failed to even get someone to acknowledge that I was there. I went in and stood by the front for a minute waiting to be seated, but nobody came. There was an employee on the phone near the register taking an order, so I went and politely waited for him to finish. He didn't even glance in my direction when he was on the phone. When he was done, he hung up, scribbled some stuff on a pad, looked up at me like he was wondering what the hell I was doing standing there like an idiot, and then walked away. He ignored friendly "hello" and ignored my "excuse me" as he was walking away. Classy. Now, I don't go to restaurants because I expect the waitstaff and employees to treat me like I'm royalty. I am not a fussy eater, I don't customize my orders, or ask for substitutions. I don't expect comps if my order is screwed up, and I tip a minimum of 20% for even average service. But in normal everyday human interactions, I expect people to behave, well, like normal humans. You know, like shaking hands when you meet someone, or making eye contact when you speak. Normal everyday stuff. People that can't do these things set off red flags when you interact with them, and generally these are the types of people that most other humans avoid. Usually with good reason. That being said, I have a hard time patronizing an establishment where its principal employees are unable to accomplish the simple task of treating me like a human being, let alone a customer. I ended up walking out of the restaurant, again. That's twice in the last two trips. So I'm done. Good though the food may be, I am not willing to weather the horrible service and rude staff in order to eat here. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area.

I went to this place a few nights ago w/ my bf as I was craving Thai and he'd said this place was great a few yrs ago when he went; the first thing I thought when we walked into this place is wow, these booths are close together, but as I pondered a bit longer it settled on me that it was quaint and kind of homey so I dismissed my earlier discomfort. Our verbose "mama san" style waitress seats us and brings us water, then proceeds to disappear for 15min before returning for our orders which don't arrive at the table for another 45min... Wait, I'm getting ahead of myself, while not trying to beat my head into the table to stave off hunger I was engaged in light conversation, but also noticed a poor gentlemen seated at a corner table who was receiving worse service than we were; it took them about 20min to bring his beverage and his food was just arriving as we were leaving (so I wasn't quite as indignant). Back to the food, we ordered spring rolls that could best be described as generic, I got a bowl of tom yum for myself that was off putting I guess; they fried the tofu before putting it in the soup? So the texture was way off and it was bland. I ordered spicy garlic and basil tofu (something or other), my guy orders pad thai (because that's what he gets every time), those two dishes followed suit by being oddly tasteless for Thai food... So after being supremely disappointed (and having to wait far too long for the privilege) our bill arrived and for some reason our waitress is convinced that a bit of nonsensical banter would earn them a pass on the sub par food and poor service. Needless to say, we left a poor tip and will NOT be going back.

I ordered pad Thai and there was NO flavor...it looked like the "sauce" was water and the chicken was dry...

Lai Thai is certainly much better than the highly accoladed "other" Thai place in Canton. The decor does need a little help, but the food is great. Spirit noodles, Pad Thai, and my favorite the Panang curry with chicken are fabulous. The Thai iced tea is not to be missed, and the cucumber salad is wonderful. The only thing they don't have that I miss are shrimp chips, weird I know, but I've grown to like them over the years! Soup is just not the same without those strange styrofoamesque little gems. Skip the place down the street where the oil floats on top of the curry (appetizing!) and try Lai Thai instead.

I used to like this place. Until today. I was back in my hometown of Canton, and took my mom out for lunch to Lai Thai, a favorite of ours for many years. My mom mentioned to the waiter that her son had come all the way up from Kentucky for work and wanted to come to Lai Thai for lunch. He smiled, gave us two free bowls of soup, and took our order. Mom ordered the can't-go-wrong Pad Thai with Scallops. I ordered the Pad Almond with Tofu. While we were waiting, the old female server went around, refilling drinks and playing nice with the guys/businessmen on their lunch break. When she got to our table, she didn't so much as crack a smile. You'd think there was a funeral at our table or something. When our plates arrived after about 20-25 minutes of waiting (lunch rush was in full effect), I immediately noticed that my tofu was overcooked. But Justin, how exactly did you notice? I'm glad you asked. The tofu was rubbery and dry, and just entirely dissatisfying (check the pictures. There's an example of what the tofu is supposed to look like). I wasn't going to say anything, but the more I thought about it, the more upset I was. When I motioned to the waiter/manager/whatever the hell he is, he came over with the bill, and set it on the table. I then told him that the tofu was overcooked, and he came back with "Ohhh, it's not overcooked, you can have it cooked any way you like." I replied, "I've never been asked how I'd like my tofu prepared." His reply? Looking at my mom, he said, "Oh what does he know, he is from Kentucky!" Now, I'm not an angry man. It takes a lot for me to yell, but wow, was I close to standing up and clocking him. I may not be from Kentucky, but I do take a certain amount of pride in the place that I live. For him to boldly insult Kentucky and assume no one here knows about tofu is a slap in the face. I left a $1 tip on a $15 bill and a little note at the bottom of the receipt. And that's the story of the last time I ever went to Lai Thai!

Went to Lai Thai with a co-worker today -- first time visitor. I'll go back because the food was good. The place is a little run down on the inside though. There's enough dirt in the corners or crannies between counters that I'm a little concerned about cleanliness.

I'm a little taken aback by the rancor of the past reviews. Although I've only been to Lai Thai twice, I've been really pleased with the experience. I went for dinner with my friend just today. There were a fair amount of people present for dinner (being a Friday) but the host gestured for us to seat ourselves where we wanted. I've always liked the interior of Lai Thai because I find it warm and cozy. My friend and I chose a booth which wasn't too cramped (although we are just two teenage girls). We were promptly handed us our waters and we were attended to by the older female server. Someone mentioned previously that she seemed only friendly in the presence of the businessmen, but she made pleasant small talk and asked after us even though we're just two girls. I ordered the Pad Prik with pork and my friend the Tawana Noodles with chicken. Both arrived promptly (within 15 minutes I'd say) and both were very tasty. I was scraping the bottoms of both of our bowls. I'd say the sauce in my dish was especially exquisite. If I could have boxed that alone up, I would have. I asked for medium hotness in my dish and accordingly there was a slight kick, but nothing that had me reaching overmuch for my water. My friend's Tawana noodles were also very tasty, although I didn't get to eat very much of those. The slow and unfriendly service seems to be a big dealbreaker with many past reviewers but I've found no fault with it... in fact I'd even go so far as to praise the kindness of the server we received. The food was yummy as well. I can't attest to the authenticity of the dishes but I can say as a human being that they definitely pleased my taste buds. The amount of spiciness was attended to and the flavors were pleasant. 5 stars for the sauce on my dish alone. Not to mention that the prices are entirely reasonable for the dishes we received. Overall the atmosphere in Lai Thai is cute and very welcoming. I enjoyed my experience a lot and encourage anyone who may be interested in trying it out to do so.

They have great thai food. I really love the curry dishes. I usually order green curry chicken whenever I go get thai and La Thai's green curry chicken is great. I also tried the yellow curry chicken and the pineapple curry chicken, both were enjoyable. Service is decent. Only one person was there for waiting on a dozen tables and only one other person cooking the food. We got our food in a reasonable time and it was well prepared and fresh. I would definitely go back.

Very good food and pretty decent service! Usually only one or two waitresses on at a time, so when the restaurant is filled up they sometimes forget to brig your water or extra sauces...other than that, amazing food :)

Not bad, nice little lady there. Have to ask for extra lime and cilantro which makes it complete.

Great dishes, but you need to be knowledgable what you will and won't like in your dish. Funny server lady who's pushy is always a plus as well.

Although this resutaurant does have a few dishes that are unique, their service is not that great. In addtion, their take-out sizes for dinner are as small as their the size for lunch. However, the price for lunch is 30% less than for dinner. I asked the owner why the dinner take out sizes have gone down in size over the past several months. He laughed and asked me if I was there for lunch before. I said I have been, but that was at least a year ago - I usually always do dinner there. I said if the serviing is so small for dinner, I can't think of the serviing size for lunch. Check out other Thai places - their serving sizes are signifincalty larger in size, and have equal or better quality.

I love #4 Lai Thai Noodle with my heart and soul. It is always consistently delicious. Yes, sometimes the service is a little slow, but that is OK, since the golden yellow noodles swimming in a spicy coconut curry pond make up for the wait.

Brrrrrringgggggg... Brrrrrringgggggg... *click* Hey man... I went back... What?... Yeah, again... Shut up... Yes I know I'm trying to lose weight... YES, I realize that eating Thai every other day isn't going to help me reach my goal of having a normal sized ass some day... Listen... No YOU don't understand. It was PINEAPPLE CURRY! I haven't had it in forever... What?... No, still no jasmine rice... I don't know why nobody serves it here... Thai food NEEDS jasmine rice!... I don't know... Maybe they are all too cheap... Yeah, the food was good. Didn't I say that?... Really good... No, not THAT good... It was delicious, there were just a couple of off points... I know, I'm too picky... Yeah it was pretty similar... Well, they put some tomatoes in it, and they are out of season so they were a little orange and kinda mushy... Also the bell peppers were strange... Like how?... Like, too green and too dense... Yeah, I don't understand either. I thought bell peppers were all the same... What?... Yeah, other than that it was great. I love the way the pineapple mixes with the curry... I freakin' inhaled it... Other stuff?... Oh, yeah I got the Curry Puff appetizer... It was yummy... I love cucumber salad... What?... Oh the wait staff?... Yeah the main lady talked to me some more... She must think I'm becoming a regular... Their kids were playing in the dining area though... I thought it was weird too... I mean it's cool that it's family owned... Yeah, I know... Anyways, I gotta jet... I'll see you on Mario Kart later... Haha, funny. 'Bye, fatty' to you too... Ass..." *click*

Excellent food, but no beer. I started with the Tofu Tod appetizer and a Thai tea. The tofu was hot and soft in the middle, and the peanut dipping sauce was just right. The Thai tea was very tasty and thirst quenching. I ordered the Panang Curry w/chicken, as per the hostess' suggestion after I asked which was her favorite curry. I ordered medium spiciness. The white rice came in a big covered serving bowl with its own spoon. The curry came in a dish. The curry sauce was not thick, but it was spiced "medium" exactly how I expected. The total came to $13.47 after tax. I thought the bill would be more actually, because the entree alone was $9. I will definitely go again for the food. The only drawbacks were: Cheezy Thai music playing Cheezy Cheap decor Plexiglass table tops which were cracked (every table). Time to upgrade to real glass. No beer or alcohol is served here, but the Thai tea is really good.

I love this place. They have the best spring rolls ever. I always get FR5 (srarachi fried rice) with chicken and no spice. It is so good. They always have great service, and the restaurant itself is a really cute little place.

The family who owns this restaurant are some of the nicest and friendliest people which make the restaurant 5 stars for me. The Rama noodle on the chefs special menu is one of my top 5 favorite meals. I dream of this dish! I don't know what I would do without it haha. Their cucumber salad is great, and their Thai iced tea is the perfect blend. I've been eating here since 2006. I wish I lived a little closer so I could eat here more often.

Good Thai food. Enjoyed the N3, the rest of my table liked the pad Thai. Go a level up when asking for spiciness, not as hot as you would think.

Consistently the best Thai food around. We always go out of our way to get Lai Thai. The service is friendly and welcoming We've had the same waitress for the last decade and she always goes out of her way to acknowledge that fact.

The best Thai food in Canton. I have to warn you it is very addictive meaning after you go you might have to come every week to get it. The owner is really nice and waitress knows your name after awhile. She is super friendly too. Everything I have ever gotten is great.

My search continues for good Thai food in Southeast Michigan. I love Thai Thai in Ypsilanti, but their limited hours always impedes my access to great Pad Thai and curry. I found the food at Lai Thai to be wanting. The Pad Thai was not very good, it was okay, but almost tasted fast-food-ish, such as the kind you get from "No Thai" (which I consider "Not Thai"). Coconut soup tasted less tart than I'm used to, almost chicken brothy and mild; it was good, just different. Due to their cheap lunch prices, I would definitely return if I'm doing a round of shopping in Canton, but would not seek this place out for Thai cravings.

  • Randy C.

Very good Thai food with lots of vegan and vegetarian options. We started with the Tom Kha soup, a coconut milk based soup with plenty of fresh vegetables. It was very tasty with hints of spiciness (we ordered medium). Then we got the Drunken Noodles (no egg) and the Massaman Curry with Tofu. This was served with a small bowl of white rice. The food was very good. Service was very good. Prices were a little higher than I expected, though it seems like lunch here is a great value. On the other hand, the place is a little more upscale than I expected also.

  • Emily S.

We asked for egg rolls, they gave us spring rolls. They were good. The Pad Thai sucked, it was lacking flavor. The Tom Yum was good, but I wish they didn't fry the tofu. The C3 didn't come with a very large portion and the scallops were so small. I will never be coming back to this place. Thai Bistro is right down the road and I think their food is so much better. I was less than thrilled with my experience and will never be returning.

Not my first choice in the area when I'm craving Thai, but I wouldn't decline a friend's invite to dine here. I have yet to find my go-to dish at Lai Thai, but the Pad Thai and green curry are OK. Others have mentioned the seating - I'll add my two cents - tight, hard wooden booths.

I usually come in at lunch time. Their food is decent. Most of the time I order the Spirit Noodle. It's made with rice noodles and is very good. There are different soups which come with the meal depending on the day. My favorite is the hot and sour soup. Theirs is different from other places, but quite tasty. One minor complaint is the food isn't very spicy, even if ordered hot. The brown sauce is good though. The rice noodles are too. Prices at lunch are very reasonable for the amount of food you get.

  • Elisa C.

I love this place and have been coming here for about 10 years now! The staff is friendly and the service is great. My favorites are the curry dishes and the fried rice dishes. If you are ordering an appetizer, I recommend the veggie curry puffs or a spring roll. Their Thai ice tea is delicious and I usually order it to drink. The food portions are generous so I never make it to the dessert menu. Be aware the fried rices are meant to be had as a meal. Don't try to order it as a side, you will not be able to finish both the rice and another dish. If you have never had Thai food before try the Panang Curry or the Pad Thai. The spice scale is accurate: mild is mild and extra hot is super hot. I love spicy food so I usually order my food medium plus. Lai Thai is also veggie and vegan friendly. You can get pretty much every dish prepared veggie/vegan.

  • Christopher W.

Perfectly adequate Pad-Thai but what ups this place is the friendly service, the soup they serve (comes w/ the meal) and here's the big one- lunch pricing. Most Thai places I go to cost $7-$10, so the option of Thai for a $5 lunch holds a lot of appeal. I'm not a fan of the crab cream cheese but I don't like it as a dish to begin with. Best Thai place in Canton.

  • Cantonite P.

My wife has a strong affinity for classic thai Druken Noodles and Spring Rolls of any variety, so we had to get some carry out here from the closest Thai place in Canton. (There's a new Bangkok Flavor 2 opening in the near future, next to the Asian Grocery Mart, which is about 2 miles closer, so we can't wait to try that). Anyways, we got take out, but the ambiance and decor of the restaurant was tastefully Thai and clean and pleasant. The food itself was definitely good and authentic enough for us. We are not foodies by any means, but I can usually tell the difference between good and not so good. Her drunken noodles (which i guess is some other name, but the nice lady figured it out), were hot, flavorful and plenty of veggies- she gets no meat/tofu because she doesn't like it. My beef pad thai was good... i always order mild because anytime i go somewhere new, i don't want to risk medium until I know better. It was well sauced, not too wet or dry, and had a good amount of tender meat. Also, our spring roll appetizers (1.20 each?) were still golden, crispy and delicious even after my 8 minute drive back. The filling wasn't anything out of the ordinary, but it was classic thai. Overall, this is definitely a quality Thai place... it's not Siam Spicy or Pi's Thai excellent in my book, but if I need a spicy pick me up in noodle form, I would not hesitate to come here. I will have to branch out and try some of the other items later on... there's just a ton of food options around this area, it's hard not to get something different every time. But still a good Thai place regardless... maybe i'd have to try that one down the road to compare.

First time I visited, I ordered a noodle dish. I was served a bowl full of those dollar ramen noodles with some veggies and meat that I could've made myself for less than $5, and that put me off of this restaurant for a while. The second time I visited I ordered the pad thai, which was pretty good and also the only thing that prevented me from giving them a one star review.

I have been going to this place for years. It's a great little family-owned neighborhood restaurant. The restaurant is not huge, but not too small either. The menu is typical Thai and the dishes are wonderful. The service may be slow for some, but I like taking 45 minutes to a full hour for a meal and not into fast food. So it suits me just fine. Gives me a chance to chat and enjoy a good meal with friends and family. I am rating it 4 stars, because that's as high as I rate. Gives me room for that one reeeeeaaaally WOW place that I am yet to find.

I had my reservations about Lai Thai at first, mostly because I'm a snob about what I like in Thai food. That being said, my family, friends, and I went all out! Starting with the appetizers: * The small cucumber salad sides were Delicious! Loved the "dressing" very refreshing. * A4 Curry puffs were very good. A little heat, a touch of curry, very tasty. I'm not a fan of curry in most cases but I'll make an exception here! * A5 Kong Nang Roll was very good. Excellent dipping sauce. Hot fresh and tasty! *Won-ton soup. This is not your Chinese mother's won-ton. These freshly made dumplings have great flavors. A touch of sesame pepper oil complement the meaty taste. The broth actually is good too. Not just plain water tasting! *SF1 Yum Apple Salad. OMG!!!!! All I can say is that I would NEVER have tried it based on the description (my sister ordered it). It is PHENOMENAL. *SF2 Yum Ta Lay salad is LOADED with fresh seafood in a light cilantro sauce (I ordered this one). Scallops, shrimp, squid, crab....Perfect!!!! OK, the main courses at our table: *FR3 Kow Pad Gra Praw (hot). This was an excellent basil rice dish. I had mine with chicken. The ingredients blended perfectly, and I couldn't stop eating it. Hot was just the right amount of heat, but I may try extra-hot next time just for fun. I'll definitely have it again. *N11 - Ba-Mee Heang. This noodle dish was ordered by my younger second cousin, so was skeptical. It easily could have been the best dish at the table! He had his without any meat which was good, but I really want to try it with tofu and chicken! *E6 Pad Prew Waan (sweet & sour). Our friend ordered this and said it was good. It was very colorful and the presentation was awesome. I tasted the sauce because I'm not big on S&S dishes, but this was relatively mild and tasted pretty darned good. It's on my future order list! *C9 Yellow Curry - My sister ordered this with shrimp, and my daughter with tofu. They both said it was great. Personally not to my taste, but as I said, I'm not a big fan of curry. The presentation of all of the dishes was very nice and obviously well thought out. The service was PERFECT. Prompt, courteous, speedy...everything I could ask for. The food came out hot, fresh, and quick. This is my new go-to Thai place. If you haven't tried it...take the plunge now. I'll be seeing you there!

This place must have changed quite a bit over time, since one reviewer talked about the huge lunch portions, but you coulda fooled me--it's def more like Dave K says: 1) booths are TINY, and I'm not even a big person but it just feels cramped, 2) the main dish plates are TINY, and 3) it seems like, for one of the servers at least, this is THE most unfavorite job in the world, rushing customers through decision making (it wasn't even busy in the restaurant) or, alternately, making our table wait a long time before coming to get our orders (like the place is so big you can't see from one area to the next? Not). I've had Pad Thai, Pad See-Ew (sp?), Tom Yum soup, and curry puffs there, and things were pretty good for the prices (lunch is a better bargain, but even dinner entrees are often under $10, which is a good deal and indeed more reasonable than the well-known thai place down the street). One table diner said the "hot" pad thai he ordered was totally mild; all my stuff was mild and they stuck true to that. The Pad See-Ew was way too sweet for my taste, but maybe that's the dish--it was the first time I had it ever, so I can't compare to anything yet, not that I will try it again if that's the standard. Anyway, in overall conclusion, nice place once in a while if you go with properly calibrated expectations.

Lai Thai is the best thai food in America. Period. Definitely a reason to visit Michigan even if you don't want to be in Michigan.

I have eaten at Lai Thai countless times, and it is our favorite local Thai place. The food is reasonably authentic, and varied. It is a plus that almost all the dishes can be customized in terms of ingredients and spice level. Not only does this mean you can make a few changes to satisfy your preferences, it also indicates that the food is made fresh. It is a smaller restaurant, and usually busy, which I take to be a good sign. The prices and portions make for a good value at lunchtime, and a little less so when ordering from the dinner menu. I've always found the food to be fresh and of a high quality. I certainly recommend this restaurant for those in need of a quick Thai fix.
