This place has really gone down hill and is now just an expensive version of Taco Bell. You no longer get lettuce, guacamole, or sour cream with anything unless you ask for it. Also the service is terrible, even when the place is relatively empty. Don't bother ordering appetizers because you will not get them until your meal comes and better hope you don't need refills on your drink because the waitresses don't come back to check on you!

Pretty freaking good Mexican food for the UP. Probably one of the only Mexican restaurants in the area, so not much competition. Went here frequently, as the husband loooves Mexican food. We always had solid service and good food.

I was just up visiting my kids, and I'm glad my youngest daughter suggested Carmelita's. As others have said, I too was surprised to find good Mex in Calumet, MI. (4 stars for Mex vs. Mex, 5 stars for Mex in the Keweenaw Peninsula!). The chips they start you off with are the standard good chips you get lotsa places, but the salsa is better than most...we finished every bit of it. I had the spicy pork burrito, good and crispy, lotsa meat! I also ate every bit of the rice and refried beans...and there have been many other Mex places that I usually left some behind, but Carmelita's did it up really well. My daughter had a burger that she really liked...I had a couple bites too and it really was good! Also got a good dark chocolate swirled cheesecake to go that had a very slight peppery taste mixed in for a kick...good good good! I'm moving back to Houghton soon, and Carmelita's will definitely be in my dining rotation...gotta get back to try their Margaritas along with more of their menu!

What a breath of fresh air for Calumet! A clean, up-to-date, big city menu restaurant with good margaritas! I ordered chimichangas and a house margarita. The chimichangas were fried to a perfect crisp, served with beans, rice and sour cream/guac. The food was hot and our orders (6 of us) were delivered quick. I didnt see if the margarita was made with a mix or not, but it was good! Oh, all tables get chips & salsa too. Keep up the good work! I will be back in summer to experience the outdoor seating.

If your into tex-mex this is one of the only places in the area to get it, they have everything and its very good, They were a sponsor for the local hockey team and everyone went, makes it a very people friendly place. good waiter servcie and nice place.

Pretty much the only Mexican food that your going to get in the area besides Taco Bell. I'm not a huge Mexican fan but I didn't mind the food when I was there. They also have a new place down in Houghton right next to Michigan Tech.

Traveling in the Keweenaw, this place is an unexpected gem. Friendly staff, air conditioned, Pink Floyd full album followed by Janis Joplin, Mexican bistro decor. Outdoor patio if you like. And really decent American Mexican fare. Coming from Detroit and having lived in LA, this is middle of the road or better. But up here, so amazingly unexpected. Good times.

The only reason I am writing this review is to warn others. This place has gone down in quality so badly that I stopped going there at all. Our out-of-town friends who used to live here wanted to go and so we did. It was a disappointment all around. A Mexican restaurant and on the night we went, they said they were out of rice, beans, and beef! Really? How hard is it to make the rice? And no beef? Seriously? I still cannot believe it. Why didn't they just close the restaurant? The server was trying to be all cutesy and calling herself poopy because they didn't have rice and beans. Which only irritated me even more because I don't want potty talk at dinner. Well, that's the UP for you. And she made mistakes over mistakes in taking our order and serving our dishes. Why do I give two stars? For thimbleberry margaritas, they are the only/good game in town. Go there just for drinks. The food sucks. Service is typical UP. Chatty.

From someone who grew up in the Southwestern US, I was very reluctant to try what is probably one of the northern-most Mexican restaurants in the US. Let me put your concerns to rest, this is absolutely some of the best Mexican places I have ever been to. I have never had a bad meal there, and while most of the food is americanized, it is still very flavorful and amazing. Most of the portions are quite large, so you really get a lot for your money. I also highly recommend the extremely unique and incomparable Thimbleberry Margarita, which is an sweet and boozy treat. If you are ANYWHERE near the Keweenaw, you have to try Carmelita's.

My husband would give them a 4 STAR rating. My husband liked the burrito he had. Lots of rice and beans come with it. I got the chimichangas. Size was good. I was not impressed by this restaurant at all. The mild sauce they use is a white sauce. They over load the plate with rice and beans. And More expensive for someone on a tight budget. also to bring food home they just use little sheets of foil. my husband wanted the beans and rice but we couldn't bring them. had the chips and salsa. that was great. all I ate. Wait staff was very nice.

The food on the frontside was great and 4 star by far. The guy who was selling the pill's out the back door in broad daylight , not so much.

We've been here a few times now and have always had good food and service. I had the chicken fajitas and was quite tasty. Will keep coming back!

Just had an awesome chicken fajita buritto and my wife had a seafood enchilada. Both meals were great, as was the service. We will be back soon.

Man do I love this place. After always driving right through Calumet on my way to Eagle Harbor, I finally decided to stop with a few friends. I love Mexican food and it is rare in the UP. The thimbleberry margarita is tasty (even though it is nothing more than thimbleberry jam mixed with margarita mix!).

We stopped in for a beer and sat at the bar. Ordered a couple draft beers and chips and cheese. Beer was good, but don't remember the label, because... Chips came with salsa and VELVEETA! Really?!? It doesn't have to be queso, but you could get a cheap chunk of cheese and grate it over the chips! So glad we didn't get a meal, we saw a guy on the bar with a burrito that had the same Velveeta stuff on it. I don't know what the standard is for Tex-Mex in the UP, but this is not it!

I wish that I would have seen the review from Lei T. before I went. We got the chips and cheese. These are the same chips and cheese that I can get at a hockey game -- wait, isn't this a Southwestern Grill?? How can you claim to be a Southwestern Grill when you open a can of nacho cheese and call it good. I had to ask for salsa -- shouldn't have. Again, a can opener was used to get our salsa - but they opened the wrong can - I think it was just a can of tomatoes. No flavor/spice whatsoever. My Aunt ordered a salad with Cilantro ranch dressing. It had no flavor. Seriously. It was like taking a sip of water. She asked for a different dressing, their Thimbleberry Vinaigrette (and was informed that there would be an upcharge for their 'specialty' dressing). Only sign of a berry was the red coloring; it tasted of oil, and nothing else. My chicken chimichanga was made out of a 6" flour tortilla (not kidding- and got the lite portion, which was only one) with a teaspoon of sour cream on the side and covered in red sauce (my other choice was green)... small portion of rice accompanied this sorry meal. Sad. Go a few blocks, buy a brick of cheese, ANY damn cheese, and grate it over your store-bought chips if you are going to charge $4.95 for them. This place, I am sorry to say, is a joke. Open a restaurant if you love food and love to cook. Don't bother going into business if you are just trying to keep Reinhart or Sysco afloat. This place is shameful.

Carmelita's is a diamond in the rough; I recently moved away from the Keweenaw and though I've found a new Mexican restaurant to meet my needs, I will always remember Carmelita as my first. The place can get pretty busy seeing as its one of the only restaurants in Calumet (except for Jim's, and I hate anise so I don't enjoy their licorice-flavored crust). They also have a place in Houghton where you can get take-out of some of their more popular items. The enchiladas and quesadillas are great (with huge portions), and if you're not a native of the Keweenaw, you must try the thimbleberry margarita. You will be pleasantly surprised. Also, they have live music every so often and the place has a cute little charm that makes you want to snack on the endless chips and salsa all night long.

It's cool to find awesome stuff in the U.P.. Carmelita's is one of those cool things. we stumbled upon this cool little joint on a day trip up from Marquette. Boy am I jealous. we don't have any Tex-Mex in Marquette at all. the Chimichanga's were yummy and the Margarita's were cheap, in fact good prices all around. Also the place was cool looking, with neat stuff on the walls. Calumet is a pretty legit town.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
