Love the deli/cafe part of Herman's, but I've never enjoyed the restaurant. The food is always too drenched in oil or butter. I always try something else because I would like to like Herman's haha (I'm a huge foodie and there's not many dining options in Cadillac), but the food is always lack-luster for the price... just doesn't taste good to me and is way over priced. On the other hand- soups, cheeses, croissants, breads, etc. are magnifico!

The staff is quite impressed with an average breakfast place. The hype around the place (their own cookbook) lead me to think they could pull off 2 eggs bacon and some toast. The order took 27 minutes, because the cook didn't get the messenge he was there to cook. The coffee was a no brand assortment of "flavored" blends occasionally found in fancy gas stations. In the middle of this charming scene was a beer delivery guy trucking kegs through the diningroom, proping the door to the below zero temps outside, which brought the inside temps to the 50's. The in-meal entertainment was some old guy running around in a 5 Star chef costume berating the staff. I guess he appears on a local tv news show and is drinking his own kool-aid. It's an average breakfast you'd expect in any diner but with the atmosphere of a wannabe fine dining establishment.

Wow, Amaaazing service from our super cute waiter! We had a pre-planned large party celebration for my Grandma's 90th birthday (love). Our waiters were so friendly and efficient. We started off with bread and an olive oil & super garlic mixture. I tried the morel soup which everyone raved about on yelp, Nice and creamy, but a little on the salty side. Our group tried a bunch of entrees which everyone was very happy with and the portions were gigantic (see pix) Highly recommend this place if you're in the area and it's especially good for big parties.

I've been coming here since I was a kid. I love grabbing a quick lunch at the Chef's Deli. The soups are delicious and home-made. The sandwiches are made to order with quality ingredients. Don't forget to buy a cookie!

Ate breakfast and lunch at the deli for 2 days. Exceptionally delicious, Boars Head meats and cheeses, flakey pastries and wraps for the sandwiches. Good choice of brewed coffees (in carafes). Charming. Locals seem to like the place, along with the Chef. That's always a good sign.

Very overpriced for low-quality, poorly presented food. I was disappointed on both of my visits. Last time I had a "whitefish topped with wild mushrooms". The portion was abundant but the fish tasted like vinegar--the wild mushrooms were pickled. Yuck. The morel soup is too rich. The traditional German faire seems to be the safest bet--sauerbraten or schnitzel with red cabbage or sauerkraut and spaetzel--you know, the stuff that tastes pretty good from the jar.

Best food in Northern Michigan period. Great wine selection. Top notch staff, knowledgeable staff that knows food and wine. Check out Opas butcher shop and talk to Lalli for great wine and fresh meats and seafood items. Great nightly specials, food is always prepared perfect, and Chef will greet you with a handshake and a smile.

Since it's fresh in my mind I thought I'd better get this one going. Nearly the ENTIRE three stars were for the Morel soup. It was so delicious, earthy, nutty. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. The waiter was a little inexperienced but still ok. I asked for whatever the chef prepares best. The waiter said he suggests the fish special and I said I want WHATEVER the chef prepares BEST. I don't care what it is, I simply want his best meal. He returned with telling me the chef suggested another choice off the "special" list. I said that is fine. My boys had chicken fingers and cheese burgers. (whoops forgot the cheese) The burger was taken back, a slice of cheese dropped on and microwaved to melt. My son didn't eat it :( My husband ordered a sausage and pork loin dish. It was basically 1 sausage, and 3 thin slices of pork loin for 30 dollars. If these were house made artisan pieces I would say the value was there. Instead they were just basic sausage and pork. Nothing special. My dish was a veal cutlet topped with shredded crab, white asparagus, some brown sauce, and a bechemal sauce. Let me say that the sauce was so overpowering that I lost all the delicate flavors in the rest of the meal. I had a delightful soft veal cutlet, covered in sweet crab, topped with delicate white asparagus, and an amazing bechemal, DROWNED IN HEAVY BROWN SALTY GOOP. I am sorry if this was the chefs best meal. I did see chef out visiting in the restaurant and he stopped by our table which I thought was nice. The meal was okay and I realize there isn't a lot of top gourmet places in Cadillac, MI but I just didn't see the value.

Hermann's is wonderful. We have eaten dinner twice and will be back. Everything is very good. The morel soup is a treat as well as the Austrian specialties. Nice wine selection and beer tasting. We enjoyed the small plates option and tried a variety of entrees. The deli was closed, but we would like to come back when it is open.

The soups and sandwiches are great. The Deli is great food for great prices but the restaurant side is a rip off! My group was craving French fries so we ordered 3 fries from the restaurant and it cost $15.26!!! Are you f'ing kidding me?????? I thought it was a typo! We talked to the waiter and his response was "it's Hermann's baby!" give me an effing break- you're a deli in Cadillac,MI. Then we talked to the owner just because he was there. He asked how our meal was and we said, "great, except for the $5 fries." he laughed and said that wouldn't be changing anytime soon. Wow. Just get the soup and sandwiches and you'll be fine. Oh and the giant cookies but the restaurant food is a rip off!

We were in Cadillac over night and per the reviews on yelp decided this was our best bet. We ended up getting carry out because we wanted to eat by the water and on the website it advertises 20% carry out after 4pm..which they gave us. Anyway we got salads and they were really good. MY salmon was cooked to perfection and my girlfriends salad was great too. It would have been slightly pricey had we not gotten the 20% off and the decor inside the restaurant itself seems a little dark and outdated. I also overheard one of the younger waiters swearing and complaining about having the olympics on even though a customer requested it. kind of unprofessional if you ask me. Regadless the food was really good. Not 5 star good but good for a small town with limited choices.

Hermann's is overrated, overpriced, with mediocre food and often poor service. Perhaps when the restaurant opened it was better, but now seems to be resting on its laurels. Having a meal there after years in Traverse City, where there are at least twenty restaurants that are far superior, taught me the lesson never to return.

The Brie appetizer with sautéed apples was amazing. The apple salad I had was ok, nothing to rave over but it was decent. The apple vinegar dressing could have been better. The warm rolls and garlic spread that comes out before the meal was also really good. A bit pricey given the area and the menu is not huge, but other comparable choices are few and far between.

We stayed at Hermann's (it's a Hotel / Deli / Restaurant) for one night for a quick trip. The location is downtown and our particular room had an partial view of the lake. The room was very pleasant, good price, and they allowed us a super early check-in. We had breakfast in the morning; oatmeal, fruit, and coffee. Very nice. Overall the staff was kind, the facilities clean, and we left well fed and well rested. We would stay here again.

A good recommendation to buy your quality food and drinks for picnicking or boating. You don't have to settle for cheap commercial food when Hermann's is open and concerned for your comfort.

My husband and I eat here with his family whenever we come into town and its always a really good dinner, its really a gem in the area. I have eaten here many times, but the last night I got the ahi tuna burger with broccoli. The tuna itself was good, it went well with the wasabi mayo, however, the grilled bread it was on was a bit cold, as was the broccoli pieces in the middle of the bowl. Aside from the temperature problems this one time, I have never had a dinner here that was not delicious. We also had the mushroom caps and escargot appetizers, both very tasty. My husband got creme brule dessert which was perfectly cooked, and I had some raspberry chocolate thing that was pretty wonderful. Over all, a very satisfying meal. There is also a connected deli next door where you can get sandwiches, soup and cheeses. This first thing I ever ate here was the morel mushroom soup, which is a must have. The only negative is that the restaurant itself could use some updating, its got a 90's feel to it, and the centerpiece decorations for the tables need to be replaced with something more appropriate for finer dining.

Stopped in for a quick meal this afternoon before heading back to Grand Haven based on decent Yelp reviews. The broth in the French onion soup was bland, and the haloumi in the haloumi salad tasted stale/dried out compared to every other time I've had or prepared haloumi. My husband's chicken piccata was largely chicken breast coated in an omelette, but the pasta was good. The service was friendly but not very attentive, we were never asked if we were happy with our entrees, so we didn't complain. We also arrived for a very early dinner and were not offered the specials as were customers who arrived 10-15 minutes after we did. We would not return after today's experience.

Amazing!! I was here for an educational seminar and had a steak fillet with mushrooms. Could have been the best I've ever had! The morel soup was also fabulous!!

We returned to Hermann's for and overnight ski trip to Caberfae Peaks on our anniversary. There are some hotel rooms upstairs from the Cafe, which are not fancy but clean and spacious. Once again, the food at the Cafe was absolutely fabulous, which is the reason we returned to Hermann's. I had the escargot, a perfectly cooked steak and great bottle of wine. The service was just as good as last time, attentive and not pretentious. We plan to make this our annual anniversary trip. I love this place. However, if you are staying at the hotel, the Sunday "breakfast" is not good. It consists of a cheese and cold meat plate with an orange placed in the fridge in the cleaning closet. They really need to rethink that practice as it's a complete buzz kill on an otherwise fabulous romantic overnight adventure.

Excellent food, we had a grilled hallumi (sp?) cheese sale (awesome!), fish tacos (yum) and a few kids meal that were all eaten completely. The food was great, the outdoor experience was confusing, having to pick from several menus as the seating is in font of the but hatcher shop, and they re connected to two other places. Anyway, I ended well and everyone was happy.

Stopped at Cafe for 2 espresso drinks (lattes). Noticed the barista didn't have grinder but scooped the pre-ground espresso out of Tupperware. Also the espresso shots were under extracted (not tamped) and thus were weak. Temp of drink was also too low. Owners should invest in fully automatic machine or better train their baristas. Drinks had no coffee taste. Disappointed in cafe side, but our past experience on restaurant side is quite good.

3.75 stars if I could give it. A standout place given other choices about 50 miles in any direction. The mussels appetizer was great. We had to ask for bread which seems like it should just come to the table - especially with a mussels in broth dish. The house salads were fresh, plates were chilled, and the dressings were house made. I ordered a ceasar but got a house with ceasar dressing. Ate it anyway and was quite pleased. My wife had broiled whitefish with many al dente vegetables on top. I had peppercorn steak. The meat and the sauce were outstanding. I did not read the menu correctly and was was suprised when my half portion meal came with only steak and sauce. No starch or vegetable. The waiter said my salad counted as the accompaniment with half meaning main and one side as indicated somewhere on the menu. I then ordered fettucine with morels. It came quickly, it was full of morels, and the flavor was great. The wines by the glass offered a good value. At 6:30-7:30 on Saturday night there were almost no other patrons there. The staff indicated they had some special buffet night on Friday the night before which packed in the regulars. We took home a couple of walnut topped sweetrolls from the attached cafe. They were homemade and loaded with distinctive maple/flavors.

The food here is flavorful. A true Austrian chef with great tasting food. I could go on and on but you be the judge. The prices are higher end, but then so is the food. If your looking for flavor, you won't be disappointed.

Recently we dropped in to Hermann's European Cafe for lunch. The service was professional: efficient, caring and non-intrusive. The lunch was very reasonable, with a good dessert. I would like to see more local ingredients on the menu, especially some Northern Michigan cherries in the desserts!

Hermann's has been in Cadillac for a long time and we're pretty lucky to have it. Cadillac is not Traverse City, we're conservative, blue-collar, and pretty limited on the culinary front. Hermann's is the place to bring guests to dinner, or your significant other for a romantic, well executed meal. The staff is led by several veteran and attentive waiters (ask Derek to bust out his uekelele), there's a consistent and astute bartender and very good dishes. Great news! As of this year the chef is offering most of his entrees as "half-plates" which means you and your guest can leave with dinner and drinks just shy of $50.00! Stand outs on the menu IMHO are the Beef Tenderloin "Au Poivre", Pork Tenderloin and bratwurst, and Chicken Picatta. Don't shy away from the specials. I had a great Seafood and Chicken Paella 2 weeks ago. They also serve Hendrick's Gin which is hard to find north of Grand Rapids.
