Had a pretty good Turkey and Salami sandwich. The price of the meal was a little higher than other places, but I got to sit outside and look at the faces of my beautiful family...so I guess it was all worth it. Wife had the Fried Matzoh, and she liked it. Son had a Caesar salad and said it was good.

This is the toughest review I've ever done.... If you ordered the Reuben, matzah ball or chicken noodle soup, this is FIVE stars for sure! (And you would also pay five star prices) But if you're doing breakfast, you wouldn't find anything too special. (And you would still be paying five star prices) When my daughter is sick, this is e only chicken noodle soup she will eat. (And I pay $15 for the carry out). The rice pudding is pretty amazing too. But for lunch the other day, I had a cup of tomato basil soup, (good soup but not life changing) and the lox appetizer. (A few pieces of lox, a small bagel and some lettuce/ tomato). My friend had a half turkey sandwich and a bowl of the same soup. Throw in one diet coke and tip and we were at $50.00!!!! For $50.00 we could've/should've/would've been downtown Birmingham at an upscale bistro. So I don't know. Some food is a one of a kind but most, not so much. Most of the time the service is the crabbiest you've ever experienced. They really are not happy to see you coming and even less so if you chat and dally during lunch.

I had the jumbo all beef franks, they were good grilled, but a little tough. Nothing special here really. Average food.

Good but getting more and more expensive. When I have to order triple cheese cause it's paper thin, that's just ridiculous. Service is usually pretty good but sometimes it is off. Be prepared to get friendly with your table next to you cause they are in top of each other.

I live not too far form Steve's Deli, so it tends to be a neighborhood favorite for me and the rest of the people that live around me. The place is very busy and even busier around holidays with catering. I can't understand why they are so busy considering they are so expensive. The sandwiches are big, but run around $14 each. Those are Midtown prices in NYC! But for some reason they still pack the place. I normally get the number 2 which is pastrami and corned beef with swiss cheese and Russian dressing. I get the grilled challah or grilled rye. If I don't want a sandwich, I get the salmon special if they have the hot food. The soup is really good. House made broth. The chicken noodle is what my kids get. They mix the noodles, carrots, and chicken when you order, so feel free to customize the ingredients.

A solid deli. Overpriced, so is Stage but Stage has better variety for my palette and a much better dine in atmosphere. I also am more impressed with their food but I digress. This is about Steve's and Steve's is a very good choice if one is craving deli food. I think the Reubens are the way to go. I am more of a corned beef girl but I am less impressed with the corned beef here than the pastrami. Corned beef is pretty good, the pastrami is much tastier. Grilled is a must, Steve's sammies do not taste as good served cold. For that it will never be a five star for me. The size is generous and the price is done accordingly. This is a treat deli, not an everyday deli. The pickles are good. I thought the potato salad was meh. I am uber picky about potato salad though. The chicken soup though? Yum! Any way you want it, it will be tasty. Yep that soup is my fave thing. The mish mosh seems to be very popular here but the chicken and rice is good, basically anything involving chicken and soup is a winner. My husband had a swanky franky, wrapped in bacon and with cheese, he thought it was a winner. That and some fries and he was happy. He is not into traditional deli faves. James is not a huge fan of corned beef or pastrami. He usually ends up with some kind of club. I think he enjoyed having something else to pick from. It is kind of a hike for us. We would come back if in the area but likely will not hike out specifically.

Some friends took me here on my first visit to Detroit since I was a little kid. This is a cute little place where they cram everyone into tables against the wall. You can watch the counter while you eat, as people come in and out for all the traditional deli foods. They have a large selection of sandwiches and salads, and per recommendations from my friends, I went with the Ali's Salad. Not bad. Chicken, hard boiled egg whites, and tomatoes with iceberg lettuce. It was a large portion and definitely fills you up. Nice service, fun place. Check it out for lunch!

The food is always great and the service always sucks. Never enough wait staff. This morning 1 waitress for the whole restaurant? Who does that. Taking forever to get food. They charge top dollar for the food but can't hire anyone for service. We are boycotting this place from now on.

Yes, it's expensive for a deli but it is honestly so worth it. They have the best Reuben ever. Their skinny fries we delicious, and I love their soups too! I've never had a bad experience here!

This is directed at Steves carry out! The resteraunt is great. Probably one of the best deli's in town! The carry out on the other hand is hit or miss and mostly miss. I have ordered carry out from them for years and they just keep getting worse. They repeatedly mess up the order, forget to include something you ordered and then say sorry, you can come back to get it! Bummer when your home with family and friends and ready to eat. Double check your order when you order it and really check it when you go to pick it up!

Stopped here for lunch after working out next door at the new Planet Fitness. Business was pretty brisk on a Sunday afternoon but we got seated outside on the sidewalk pretty quickly and ordered waters and iced tea which were promptly brought. We didn't step inside as we were on a tight schedule that day but it must be a good place cause s lot of people were coming in and out. We ordered the julienne salad to split and I got the #12 which is they healthy sandwich ( white lawash with grilled chicken, fat free Russian dressing, healthy slaw) and my girl got the chicken salad wrap. Both were quite good and we liked the food. The service was rather slow as it took quite some time to get our food. Also one of the servers dropped a serving plate worth of water on a little girl across the aisle and some of them were a bit loud and obnoxious when speaking. Come over to me and say something instead of yelling. Also it took a good 20 plush minutes to get and pay our check. Needless to say we're late to our next engagement but the food is definitely good!

Go here and order a Reuben. Immediately. The sandwich is so good. Reason for 4 stars is that the cupcakes I picked up were not as impressive and a bit dry. But I've heard their other sandwiches and soups are great as well. I'll have to try some of the other items. But everyone needs to get a Reuben from here, now.

After leaving my home at 7 am and having a day of errands . .Steves seemed a logical last stop before home at 5pm. Was craving the Rice Pudding Parfait $5.95 Although pretty steep, it is quite good. Also saw the spinning dessert carousel & fetched the bride a glamorous cupcake $4.95 ( yep for one cupcake) While waiting for my order, I did admire the hot food buffet & 2 full sized turkeys & a very large /juicy ham. Speaking of prices, y'all on the west side, must never ever suffer from Sticker Shock as I glanced at the menu for a future Pastrami Sandwich & $13 And thought WOW! Hopefully its made with 2 pounds of deli meat..

We were very disappointed with the food and service at Steve's. We both ordered the cup of soup and 1/2 sandwich. The corned beef was dry and hard. I had ordered the cabbage soup which was over cooked and the the cabbage was mushy. Not to mention with a drink was $17. I asked for only new pickles, both an old and new pickle came on my plate. We had to hunt down the waitress more iced tea. I told her no more ice and she totally ignored both me and my Mother and filled our cups with ice. We used to go for the food and ignore the poor service. However now there ispoor food, we have checked Steve's off our list.

  • Chicki D.

Food good. Waitresses friendly. Wait is terrible whenever you go and the prices are out of line in my opinion. $13.99 for a salad in a strip mall?? Come on, this is Bloomfield Hills, not Paris. Have to say the chicken soup is probably the best around other that homemade. ;) And at lunchtime, forget hearing anything your lunch partner says. Its LOUD. $$$$$

Visiting from California. A friend brought me here - best pastrami sandwich I've ever had.

  • Matthew P.

Three stars vs. four because the price does not match the quality IMO. - Corned Beef: Some of the best Corned Beef i've tasted. Even after a bite that is packed full of slaw and russian, + extra russian the corned beef lingers on my tongue and the back of the throat, just as if I had taken a bite of just Corned Beef. Props to them for that. I've had equally good, and if not better sandwiches for $5 less though. - matzoh ball soup: Quite good, well worth the try! - Service: All three visit was sucky for me. Twice I asked for extra russian when I placed my good order to same them an extra trip, twice it didn't come and when I 'made him/her get me some' it was a total ordeal full of sass. I get the feeling the mentality is they can deal with you business so if you don't like it, don't come. Challenge accepted...

  • Evie B.

I just can't justify the $14 for a sandwich. Yes it tastes good- corned beef w/ chopped liver not humungous so you can actually eat it without slopping all over yourself. Potato salad was ok. I wish 1/2 sand was an option ( not with a soup or salad)

  • Robin L.

I love this place and often meet my husband here for lunch. I think I love it because it reminds me of Corky and Lenny's from my childhood when I lived in Cleveland. It's a real deli and so yes, it's pricy. You can get anything here! My husband loves their lean corned beef. And, I love the matzo ball soup and mish mash (matzo and kreplach)! Yummo! They also have great salads that you can get chopped up or not. I also really like their egg white vegetable omelet. And, on the weekends they serve a cinnamon french toast that is spectacular, although I haven't had that in years.

When to Steve's Deli Ordered the Pastrami on rye good sandwich kinda pricey due to the amount of meat

  • RJ W.

I was thinking about the cornbeef for hours after I left. I only had that. The place was clean and busy and they wanted you in and out. Almost a new york vibe to it. It was full of meat and on rye and just tasty. then you have the big pickle spear. I love this kind of ambiance and vibe. They also have a deli area with all kinds of stuff . I would love to come back and check out some of those things. I will come back again when I am in the area.

I have lived in Bloomfield Hills for 16 years and keep going back to Steve's every 3-4 years to try again. Unfortunately, the result is always the same: Poor service and mediocre food. Tonight takes the cake. Went in to get some soup for my sick kid. Can't get anyone to wait on me so I had call in the order. Result: they gave me the wrong soup and I didn't find out until I was home. Not a complicated order--only the soup. I think this is finally it for me and Steve's.

    (2)
  • Sandra v.

Overpriced for decent bagels. Two bagels (one with egg whites, one with cream cheese), a coffee and milk cost $17. Really?! There are better bagel joints in West Bloomfield. I can't comment on the rest of the menu since this is all I've eaten there. Doubt I'll go back as I felt they were also rather rude.

    (3)
  • Timothy E.

Chicken pot pie was awesome. Mac and cheese a little unusual in flavor. Looking forward to my next visit but i will need to save up for it $$$. You get a lot for the money but it was still more than I thought from a deli. The did have more than just your regular deli.

So my hubby, Steve, and I went the other day to Steve's. We've been there probably a dozen times in the past 10 years. The server literally threw the menus down on the table. We both ordered the turkey meatloaf lunch plate. My husband ordered the mac and cheese side. It was so gross and tasteless. I had mashed potatoes with brownish, very salty gravy. The meatloaf was tasty. We had to flag the waitress down, and they were not busy. This meal, I think he had a diet coke, me: water, was 30ish dollars. Also, on their TVs they have the Fox Channel broadcasting. We won't be back.

Ordered for Passover. $9.00 for ONE piece of kugel. ONE piece!!! Everyone knows the prices are high, but this is offensive! I thought they made a mistake, so I called them. Nope. There is no justification for some of their prices.

This business is very unprofessional. I called to speak to the owner and whoever i was talking to hung up on my face just because i asked is this the owner speaking. I wanted to complain about horrible service and now you see why. Also their food is poor quality and poorly prepared. if i could leave 0 stars i would. LEARN HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS

I can only comment on the one dish that I have been getting here for years: Their reuben and fries is outstanding. I keep coming back like an addict, despite the fact that they charge too much.

It's good, but just know what you're getting into. This place is nothing special. Two sandwiches, a quart of soup with a bag of chips will run you almost $50 here.

We had lunch @ Steve's today. chicken pot pie chicken DRY the creamy filling was solid.. Looked like paste. NO favor the WORST. My husband had egg salad sandwich, dry falling from his sandwich in clumps. Waitress was totally uninterested in servicing us, never came back to ask us how our lunch was! Tried to pay but unable... Had to find out waitress. Bus boy/man was VERY helpful. Not the Steve's Deli we have been going to. OVER PRICED not going back!

Nice to have a place like Steve's around. It has a few vegetarian choices and plenty for the meat eaters. There are many deli's around but I try and support the businesses that have been around and support our community. We've had service vary but overall have had some pretty good servers. I've read some of the other reviews about ownership and management and that's a shame if true. I haven't had any problems and if I do I'll update this review quickly. Actually I've seen some customers who were pretty rude to the servers. As always it would help if the servers knew something about good vegetarian or vegan options. It's pricey for a sandwich but it's a nice place to get something light or some sides. Friends have liked the egg salad sandwich with the delicious potato chips as well as the veggie sandwich and the veggie burger. I liked the veggie reuben minus cheese. It's nice to have healthy options like the lavash wrap. There's a lot on the menu but if you want to keep it simple for about $4 you have some good options such as hot cereal, two eggs any style, a fresh fruit salad, OR a side of hash browns (make sure they aren't cooked in lard for you vegetarians). That's a pretty good set of options on any menu.

Eh - I grew up in Bloomfield Hills and have been to Steve's a million times. I've never really been blown away by anything but the price. Generally speaking, the atmosphere and attitude of staff is pretty cold and bland - nothing offensive but certainly not warm. I was there two days ago and an interaction between one of the managers and a customer is what drove me to write this review. An older couple came in and sat down - they were rather rude and unpleasant, I will say. The couple waited a few minutes for a server and when she finally came they asked her to turn on the Tiger's game on the TV near our tables. She apparently went to the manager to ask him to change the channel, and a moment later he emerged with the remote... He walked up to the general area of where I was seated and where the older couple was seated and blurted out, "Who wants the channel changed!?" He said it again and the older guy said he did. He then walked up to their table, very close, and then said loudly and rudely, "WHAT STATION?!" The older guy said "the tiger's game," and then the manger said even louder, "WHAT STATION!?" So the older guy said, "Fox sports" and the manager changed the channel. He then stomped away. What stunned me the most was the way the manager GLARED at the customer. Like, I would shoot someone this exact look if they insulted my deceased mother - it would've burned a hole through you. It was intense. I wouldnt' say I wouldn't go back, but I was shocked. Also, the place is REALLY pricey. My dad and I both had regular deli sandwiches and two pops, and our total bill was $28. Crazy.

LOVE this place- Take anyone here, your kids, grandparents, picky eaters, dieters. The muenster and honey cup mustard on Steve's Deli chicken sandwich will be the death of me. It is SO good, and definitely my fave. Pricing seems a little high for the typical deli, but that's not to say I don't enjoy my meal every time. Ingredients are always fresh, hot, and they prepare any meal any way you want it. If you want a quality lunch or dinner in a deli atmosphere, this would be a great recommendation for you, if you want somewhere cheap, don't go here.

There is something about a sandwich during lunch time that is comforting for me. Not only is it convenient to eat, but the insane amount of choices you could have make the decision process that much more difficult. I was early for my hair appointment and looked up Yelp on my phone, so decided to pop into this place and try it out. Considering that Annette J. gave this place a great review, I figured that it'd be worth a try. :) I'm a fan of reubens in general. Whether it's corned beef, pastrami, turkey, anything! I'll try it. It's total comfort food, and with the blazing sun casting its rays on me, the experience was even more glorious. I walked into the take-out area of the deli, and noticed that they had a manager's special of the day, which happened to be.....PASTRAMI REUBEN! Oh, and with chips too. All for $8.99! But boo, it said it's available after 11:30am, and I was there at 11:15am. I then asked the gentleman if I could still get it, and he said, "No problem." That was nice of him. :) It was meant to be, so I ordered that. Not having been there before, I wasn't aware that I had to go around the front corner to pay the bill, but the gentleman who took my order was so nice and told me so. After a 10 minute wait (there were other hungry patrons before me), I got my sandwich. It was stuffed to the max with thin layers of pastrami and sauerkraut. The texture of the meat was moist and not super chewy, which I liked. It had the right amount of saltiness to balance the sour/acidic flavors of the sauerkraut. Not only were the flavors in harmony with each other, but the proportion was right on. With a little more of the sauerkraut than the pastrami meat, I was thoroughly enjoying myself. Some people like to have more meat than vegetable, but I prefer in a Reuben, just a little more of the vegetable to offset the saltiness in the meat. However, you can specify with these guys. They'll do it. :) Probably the only thing that I didn't like as much was the amount of butter they slathered onto the rye bread. Because it was grilled, the brown grill marks were executed well, but it was just a little too oily and greasy for my liking. Not a deal breaker, but had it had less butter, I would have been able to finish the entire half of my sandwich. The chips were made in house, and were light and airy. Not greasy at all. The pickle was okay, but didn't seem to have been pickled long enough. Still tasty though. Overall, for a quick lunch, I was happy with Steve's. It's nice that it is next door to Liquid, so if I'm craving a Reuben I can simply pop on by before or after my hair appointment.

The Reuben sandwich on challah bread is what I come here for. Super clean, not fatty and deliciously cured. Huge portions which I ended up splitting with my hubby. I'd give it 5 stars for the sandwich alone, but the service is unique. I felt like I was living back in NYC with the waitress' sass and attitude which threw me off. I'm use to attitude in a cultural context (NYC snippy, surly) but in Michigan? I will go back again but only order carry out so I don't have to deal with the unfriendly, NYC-snotty attitude. Perhaps, the attitude is to deal with the majority elderly high-maintenance customers. Also, not kid-friendly at all. We asked for a booster seat and they said they had none.

Just had the worst experience ever at Steve's deli. Waited a hour and a half to get oatmeal and toast and then the oatmeal was very runny and inedible. Sent the oatmeal back and then 25 min later the first of three bowls came back. 15 min later the next one came out. It took another 20 min for the final bowl to come out. At the end of the meal they had the audacity to charge me for the oatmeal. I had to ask for the charge to be taken off.The manager couldn't be bothered to come out to apologize.

Just because of the name (my name is Steve too) and the fact that I love delis, I had somewhat of a fond attitude even before I set my foot in the door. It was around 5pm on a Saturday and the place was about 20% full. One thing that was noticeable was how many people they had working behind the counters. It seemed like there were somewhere close to 15 people working at the time. Overall, it gave me the impression that the business was good. I had the corned beef sandwich which was recommended by the waitress. It came with two pickles, each of different kind, and a side of coleslaw. The sandwich was packed with corned beef and I had to take some out to make it manageable. Unfortunately, the meat was a bit dry And kinda lacking in flavour. I'm not sure if they are going for the lean taste but it was too bland that I had to ask for some more sauce. For a $15 sandwich, it was pretty disappointing. I've had corned beef at Cityscape Deli which is just about a mile north on Telegraph and Long Lake and it was way way better and cost only about $10. I thought 10 bucks was steep at the time but after this experience it seems like a bargain. To be fair, portion was okay and the service wasn't too bad either. I think the area in general suffers from lack of competition and that is why places like this can stay open while charging that much for a mediocre sandwich. I've had a pretty good look at the overpriced menu and I don't think I'll be going back any time soon so with a little benefit of the doubt, I'll give it 3 stars.

I was served the worst egg salad sandwich of my life. The egg salad was all ground up and it had no flavor. The corned beef sandwich was dry. Our server did not check in after bringing the meal. Waited a good 20 mins for the check. The food was extremely over priced. I can't believe a cup of soup and a half sandwich for two people came out to $30. I immediately regretted not spending that $30 at trader joes next door. I would have atleast had a delicious and satisfying meal. I would never go here again.

Terrible service!!!!!! Hidden charges everywhere! Two waters, two half sandwich and soup specials and a side of kugel $44.00... Go to stage deli, don't wast your time here... This place could be great, needs better service and cut the hidden charges!!!! Never again!

Food? Yum! Service? Spectacular! We needed some quick respite from a working weekend and off I went to Steve's to pick up food for my development team. They had a couple of trays put together in no time and fantastically assisted me with some tantalizing suggestions. It was just what we needed to make it through a hard day. You know sometimes the basics of good customer service and fresh offerings make all the difference. Thank you for making my life just a bit easier today!

You guys, I don't know why but the last couple of days I was hardcore craving an egg salad sandwich. I know that's kind of random but it is what it is. So God bless Steve's for hooking me up with one this afternoon. Popped in before a hair appointment next door and was thrilled to see the egg salad on the menu. I ordered a cup of chicken rice soup and the sammy on challah and pulled out my laptop to do a little work. The soup was great. I'm spoiled because my grandma makes a fantastic chicken soup and they did a fab job getting pretty close to her awesomeness in my eyes. The egg salad was exactly what I was craving. It wasn't anything mind blowing or crazy but it did the trick. It doesn't sound like egg salad would be a tough thing to pull off but I've been underwhelmed by many a place recently. Between over cooked eggs or way too much mayo, they just didn't hit the mark. They got it here, though. Although I could have used it a little saltier I did enjoy it. The challah was soft and sweet. Perfect! My waitress that served me and the hostess that sat me were both so incredibly nice. Making fun small talk and just being helpful and friendly the whole time. The space itself is really cute. Very much like a cute little diner. White tables, red bench seating. Very comfortable and clean. I was seated next to a rotating cooler of desserts that featured some of the biggest cakes I had ever seen. Massive layer cakes, huge cupcakes, and the most massive slice of cheesecake I have ever encountered in my life, for real. I was too stuffed when I finished my meal to try anything but next time, I shall give something a shot. I'm so glad I was finally able to pop over to a hair appointment early so I could try this place out. You'd better believe I'll be back to enjoy their other amazing looking dishes. Maybe next time I'll be craving something a little wilder than egg salad but even if I am, I'll leave here very happy!

I tried to go to Andiamos last night but the wait was almost an hour so we walked across to Steves instead. I shared The chicken in the pot and a sandwich with a friend which was more then enough for two people. My soup was cold but ended up being good. The corn beef was packed on way high when i have been seeing a lot of deli's in the area skimping on their sandwiches. We walked in maybe an hour or so until closing and Our waitress seemed very tired and not in a good mood. I don't think she smiled at all. The customer service we received was not the best. She checked on us one time and had to ask her and other wait staff for several things until we finally felt settled to eat. The food is good but the customer service is not.

It's decent food and I would give it a 3 but the prices are ridiculous for a deli in a shopping strip center. $14 for a Reuben (sandwich only) plus $5 for a side (not basket) of fries. Add a soft drink, tax and a tip and it was $26 for lunch for one. Definitely not worth it.

I'm updating my review, ONLY because of the bad service I've experienced lately. I should note that I used to live nearby and have been going here since the 1990s. The women who work at the cash register are always rude and snotty. (Waitresses, if you eat there, and the guys who take your order at the takeout counter are great.) But...I almost exclusively get carry out now and the last 7 times (I'm being generous, it's probably closer to 12 times) I've ordered food and needed to pay at the counter, I'm either ignored, had my order take much much longer than anyone else, or had at least part of my order wrong. I've tried calling ahead, but it's like they don't even make the food until I've been waiting 10 minutes (past the 20 minutes they told me on the phone). It doesn't matter if they are busy or slow. It makes no difference if I'm extra friendly. Always rude. But this time took the cake, I ordered three things to take home, drove the 45 minutes home, and found that two of them were completely wrong. Congrats, Steve's, you just lost a longtime loyal customer!

I have been watching Steve's go downhill over the last many years but after our experience today we have officially written them off. We catered from Steve's and after ordering a tray for 25 people we picked it up and it only had a few pounds of meat total. Also, the chopped liver was frozen and crumbled when put on a plate. We went back and complained and their management disagreed with our assessment and said they would do nothing for us. We have ordered many times from Steve's in Chicago as well and have seen this issue before but they always fixed it when asked. One more good deli gone bad.

Screw this place! God forbid you request a small change to a sandwich! It's like they have to part the Red Sea. The food is better at Stage Deli on Orchard Lk. Road, go there. Everyone here, from the servers, to Bob the "chef" are assholes!!!!

Stopping into Steve's deli was in my list of things to do while I was here in town, and I finally stopped in after a shopping excursion Wednesday morning. I came in during lunch hour, and ordered half a hot brisket sandwich with a bowl of matzoh ball soup. Holy cow was it good! This is how deli food should be. Soup was perfect...matzoh ball was huge, it came with lots of little noodles, carrots and a slice of bagel. Delicious! Hot brisket sandwich was delicousness! Service here was good, and seating was ample. One of the better delis that Ive been to in my day.

Don't take my three stars the wrong way- I frequent this deli and enjoy my regular order. It's just not quite a four. I typically do the Maurice salad, chopped, and a turkey on rye with cole slaw, Russian, Swiss and tomatoes. Yum. I've had several other sandwiches here and wouldn't consider them like, amazing. I suppose if I liked corned beef or brisket I could have a different opinion. I was less than wowed by the chicken sandwich as it came, maybe some add on's would help. Despite my three, I'm here a few times a month. Everything is always very fresh, and the meats are quality but not organic. This deli is very, very expensive - so be warned. I would usually not mention this but when I order my sandwich and salad it's over $30.00. That provides me with three meals, but I would rather pay less and have more manageable portions. This deli is known for their soups, both matzoh and chicken noodle. Next to my Grammie's, this chicken noodle is the only soup Ill accept when I'm under the weather. If I get around to ordering their dinner style foods, I will update. Friendly staff but very fast paced. Good for me, maybe not for everyone.

I enjoy deli food. And though the sandwiches at Steve's are tasty, they are way overpriced. As in most delis french fries do not come with the sandwich - which is fine. But an order of fries is $4 and they are more like potato sticks than french fries. The servers are surley and entitled. Overall if you don't mind paying through the nose for okay food and rude treatment, then you'll love Steve's. It's not for me.

Steve's has always been a favorite of my family's since I was little. This place has been in business for what seems like forever, and when somewhere is open that long, it must be doing something right! I feel like I enjoyed the place more when I was little and wasn't worried about watching my weight, but some great things on the menu are the chicken noodle soup with the bagel cracker (I know this sounds basic but you have to try it), the corned beef sandwich, and I really love their shoestring fries. Also their lox platter is fantastic. Don't leave without grabbing some bagels (they're fantastic, my dad always brings them home). Also make sure you get a Dr. Brown's soda to round out the Jewish Deli experience. I'm only giving them 4 stars because their healthy options aren't nearly as tasty, but at least they're on the menu! I get the Telegraph salad chopped with turkey off the bone and FF raspberry vinigarette dressing (good portion, pretty tasty).

Fabulous deli... I wish we had a deli like Steve's in AZ. The prices are steep, but the food is quality! We met my friend Jeff here today for lunch. I had the egg white pizza omelette - it was fantastic! Jared went with a combo plate - pastrami sandwich and mushroom barley soup. I had some of his soup and it was the best mushroom barley i've tasted! Jeff had a lox/sable plate - it was humongous! The people dining next to us had salads that looked delicious! I know if I lived in Michigan, I'd eat at Steve's all of the time! Great quality and huge portions... you can't go wrong at Steve's!

I've been going here since I was a kid and I remember it being expensive, but I always liked the variety of salads, pastas, and prepared foods so I never complained. But today took the cake! I ordered 3 club sandwiches, 2 cokes, a cookie, and a salad with chicken and balsamic dressing... $72.40!!! I was like WTF?!?! Damn that's expensive! The salad was all a la carte so ended up being like 25$ ... 9 for lettuce, 3 ea for two veggies $6 for chicken... Etc. I kept askin for a salad that was on the menu, but he kept tellin me it's ok build ur own salad! Now I knew why!! why didn't they tell me!?!? The club sandwich was not all that, very dry, and has that turkey meat taste that I don't like... Very animal like heavy taste. Won't ever order that. I hope my mom loves her salad! Also didn't give me plastic ware, now she has to eat it with her fingers, bummer. Also the people really are NOT friendly at all. If it wasn't for their selection and great soup, this would be a 2 star review.

Steve's is a unique deli that has a lot to offer! My family and I go here every so often for a mug of matzo ball soup and a traditional Reuben sandwich. I love every sandwich I have tried here and always order the soup. The desserts and liver pate here are phenomenal as well. One of the only things I found to be a nuisance was the size of the space. It can get quite crowded and everything seems a little packed together. I'm sure I will be returning to Steve's Deli soon!

Love Steve's Deli, everyone is so friendly, the food on display looks like you want to order one of everything. I get either the Chicken Noodle or Rice soup there all the time and for good reason it's awesome. and a fun fact is if you get any soup to go they put in a really nice see though glass jar all layered where you can see the carrots on top then the huge chunks of chicken and then rice...i should of took a picture of it in the jar, but lookie at it in the bowl deeeelicious

Today was my first time going to Steve's. It was in my list of places to eat at. To say that I was impressed would be a lie. Steve's was just food for me. There was nothing special. It wasn't bad, but I will not go there again.

Just went to Steve's to get 3 egg and cheese sandwiches and 3 coffees to go. The service was rude from the get go. When we got our coffees they were filled to the very top and the blonde helping us told us to dump the remaining into the garbage can and to get cream and sugar off one of the servers dine-in tables. We paid 22 dollars for these egg sandwiches and coffees. When we left we realized it was just scrambled eggs on bagels. They forgot the cheese on all 3 sandwiches and had nothing else. They tasted like nothing. Won't go back.

I'll be short and not so sweet. While you'd imagine working in Manhattan would earn me free reign on the world's best delicatessens, nothing further could be from the truth. Katz's was too far, Carnegie too busy...2nd Avenue was great but the visits were few and far between. Fast forward to this evening - after years of living out east, I come home and as a ceremonial first of many metro Detroit Sunday dinners, my wife asks me to bring back some great deli. Sadly I passed Star and made my way north up Telegraph to Steve's. Now I've been to Steve's countless times, so in my opinion their bar is set high given their own standards. Twice since coming home and I am disappointed to report they aren't reaching the bar. This evening I approached the carry out counter and put in my meat order. For some reason the man taking my order gave us attitude. Lean corned beef was met with an eye roll. Turkey pastrami? A snicker. When I got to a loaf of bread I got a "We don't got it." Really? You don't have bread? Pretty hard to make a sandwich then eh? I could forgive the rudeness if the food justified it, but besides their incredible chicken noodle matzo ball soup, they have nothing to stand on. At least not on Sundays. The corned beef was bland. The turkey pastrami looked as though it were sitting out for a while. Given the price tonight, I was simply not happy. Steve's Deli used to rank somewhere between Star (The best of the best in metro Detroit) and Deli Unique. As of this evening though, they need to do a lot to earn my patronage back.

Been there twice in the last month and it continues to disappoint. A plate of steamed vegetables arrived....cold. One potatoe pancake is $4.00?? My bowl of soup was good but not memorable because once again it wasn't hot. Restaurant is overpriced with mediocre food and surly wait staff.

I have been craving Steves Deli for 2 weeks now. I had been there in the past and love love there Matzo Ball soup. So this is the only reason I am giving this place a two stars after today's experience. I was so excited to show my friend how great this place was, so we made a special day out of it just to go there. Well, I had such a horrible experience with customer service that even though there Matzo ball soup was still great I will probably not return. We were treated horribly and I do want to note that we were not in any way "high maintenance" customers. First of all the girl who waited on us was just plain rude right from the start. If you ask her a question she seemed totally put out. Second, when our order came up she literally threw the food on the table and walked off. Third, my friend noticed that her bread did not come with the order so she asked if it came with bread (to be nice) and the girl with some major attitude said, "yeah, did you want some?" What the heck, of course she wants it seeing it is on the menu and she is asking. Fourth, she took my soup when I was not done. Oh and fifth, she never gave us our silverware and was no where in sight to ask for it , which to be honest, i would have beeen afraid to ask for it with the attitude she threw out. The service was some of the worst I have had. So bad that we decided it is best to say something. So we went to pay and told the girls up front about the bad service and they could have cared less. So, I will not be back to this place.

I suppose maybe I was lucky that my service at Steve's was actually quite good. The prices were high, but my rueben was worth every penny. My only knock is the cramped dining space, but I suppose I can't expect anything else from a deli. I'll be back.

Huge portions of corned beef on their sandwiches will test the limits of how far your jaw can open! Pretty tasty fare, though the prices are high for what you get. A solid local deli choice with an extensive menu.

Chicken noodle soup, excellent. The only thing better is to have it with matzo ball! The meat knish is a melody in your mouth. Yum. Corned beef sandwich is perfection. Melts in your mouth. Cheesecake is "like butta"! I've had several delectable items there. Never a disappointment. Traditional deli menu. Lots of choices.

My only good experience was a take out reuben. Great sandwich. But, the star rating was dragged down from a 4.5 on that FIRST take out order by my dine-in experience. The majority of the meal was an utter disgrace. My matzoh ball soup was good, but my wife's meal was horrific. She ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, and an order of fries. The chicken was so overcooked, I'm guessing it was leftover from MORE than the day before. The bun was stale.....becoming bread crumbs with her every bite. She discarded the bun, choked down the chicken, and pretty much relied on her FOUR DOLLAR FRENCH FRIES, on a small side plate. I would be embarrassed if I owned the place. Walking out, I saw a little bucket full of frosted shortbread cookies-on-a-stick. 8.00. Unreal. With other delis in the vicinity, I won't be going back to this overpriced, arrogant establishment.

The soups and sandwiches are delicious but they nickle and dime you for everything. Don't bring children who need a booster seat or high chair because they don't have any. The place is small and can get really cramped during service rush hour. The staff seem overworked and resentful.

  • Juju J.

I'm probably rating this higher than I should. The food is good, which is four stars, but you have to deal with some other annoyance if you eat here. The chicken and tuna salads are great, especially their fat free versions (really). I love their sweet and sour soup, but hate the price for the tiny cup and high price for it. The sandwiches are good and a nice size, a wide variety of salads and some unique breakfast items (like the breakfast omelet "pizzas"). If you come here you'll have to deal with a somewhat annoying clientele and some attitude from the waiters and management. I almost feel like the management feels entitled that people are coming there. The space is small, there's usually a wait during peak times and they charge you for EVERYTHING. There's even a sign in the kitchen (on the way to the bathroom that you can see) that says something like, "Give the customer any thing but charge." Overall, though, I keep on coming back because of the food. There are very few other delis I like as much in the area as this one.

We came in here on a week day looking to grab lunch on the way home. We were displeased when we saw what others were eating. When we looked at the menu and saw the absolutely outrageous prices for the small portions of food, we simply got up and left. There's really just no reason to pay so much for simple, small meals.

I knew that if both Gabi and Andrea recommended Steve's I had to give it a shot. I stopped in a while back for lunch, and had one delicious, giant bowl of Matzah Ball soup. It really was food for the soul -- made me feel cozy and ultimately very, very full! The waitress was sweet, and I thoroughly enjoyed that there seemed to be a lot of regulars. As soon as I sat down, a sweet older man struck up a conversation with me about how much he loved the hardware store down the way, how he knew the waitresses father, and all sorts of tales. He was charming and I think that in itself added to my experience. Looking forward to heading back to try a salad and a sandwich... but given the portion size, I'm sure I'll try one at a time!

Their chicken soup take out will cure you of whatever ills you. The thick pieces of rye bread are wonderful. Their coffee is a good dark blend with plenty of flavor. As far as sandwiches, pastrami on rye with cole slaw and russian dressing may not be a dieter's delight but it will make you feel well satisfied.

This place is amazing.. Probably the BEST deli I've been to in a long time! The service is FAST, the food is hot and delicious, what more could I ask for?! Went in for breakfast and tried the Healthy Breakfast Wrap! Delicious!! Egg whites, feta, and spinach! Divine!!

Good: Reuben sandwich was fine, Nothing spectacular. Lame: Our server sucked, was disinterested, not timely, did that phony friendly crap in the last 45 seconds, etc, but most of the other servers around seemed pleasant enough. Syrup was out on the Sprite/7 Up, server said it was fine to her. Hmmm. Gross stuff on/in both of our glasses. Pretty damn expensive, for what it was. Sinful: Asked for cheddar and salami sandwich. Received that goofy cheddar/American cheese mash-up. No respectable deli would do this to a person who just asked for cheddar. They served two kinds of pickles on each plate, one of which (the darker, brinier one) was in really rough shape, like it may have been good a few weeks ago.

    (2)
  • Cheryl C.

This is the real deal. Authentic deli with the fresh pickles ( no vinegar) I love. All the food is great. I love matzo ball soup and the broth is rich and the matzo is fluffy and huge. Expensive. Worth every penny.

I finally had the gefilte fish today at Steve's. I have quite literally been trying to order it for some time, but have never had any luck. I gotta say, they do a pretty good job with these little fish dumpling thingies. Actually, the gefilte fish was not 2 or 3 little dumpling thingies as I was expecting but rather 1 mondo-sized behemoth that threatened to crush the bagel sitting next to it. Despite it's girth, it was tender and moist all the way through and as flavorful as one would expect it to be, which is to say very subtle. It was served with the traditional accoutrement of horseradish. Sadly, there was none of the gelled fish broth that sometimes comes with the dish. I also had the noodle kugel which I found to be well balanced between sweet and savory. The noodles were done just right. Steve's consistently serves good deli.

had read about steves in the past and what stood out in my brain were that they had knishes. Have missed knishes in the past few years after moving to metro detroit. happened to be in the area and finally stopped. didn't think twice about getting one for each of my family (4) and the choc. cake looked fantastic to a hungry me so i ordered a slice. note: there are no prices on any items and i didn't see any posted. but did not think it was a problem till i got to the register and the girl said $32. i thought it was a mistake. No, their knishes are $6 a piece. I paid since i had got this far. could not wait to call a Jewish friend in NYC. When I had moved from that area, knishes were a buck or so.Thus i ask my good buddy what a knish would cost at an upscale or Jewish deli. He thought and said $3. So my point goes back to my original thought at being skinned alive for $6 knishes; I would not recommend putting yourself into this highway robbery position of buying Steve's overpriced items. The quality and taste was just OK. Nothing stood out as superior or earth shattering. Again, there must be better deli's than this around.

    (2)
  • Liz L.

Steve's tries for the NYC deli feel. There is a lot to like--the selection, the tradition and the vibe--but it ultimately is just too expensive and rude for the Midwest. If you end up going, you won't be sorry that you had the Mish Mash soup, however, regardless of the number of carbs in it, no chicken soup, should cost $10.99 a bowl!

  • A T.

Very disappointing!!! Ordered an overstuffed corn beef...it was more like a skinny @ almost $12!!! Not worth the money! Mostly fatty meat to top it off. I'm disappointed bec I used to go here many years ago and it wasn't bad until now!!! Super overpriced.

  • John N.

Steve's is sort of an annoying to me. Situated inside of a small strip mall, you can not enter through either of its 2 exterior doors but must instead walk into the mall and stand in line, flag down a waitress, and then hope to be seated. The food itself is OK. I had the Reuben and it was just fine. The fish plate got mixed reviews from my lunchmates. But the service is pretty poor (missing placements, refusing to split a bill etc).

    (3)
  • Sarah M. B.

If you can eat for 2 here without spending 20 bucks, good for you...but it can only be done the way my hubby and I did it....split a sandwhich, got one side of potato salad and drank water.... However, our sandwich, the 9.99 California Club was excellent for a 'lite' item. It was def. piled high with turkey, avocado, tomato, and turkey bacon on Challah bread, but 9.99? Yikes. A side of potato salad that is probably half a cup worth for almost 3 bucks??? Also, yikes.. but it was damn good! In these times it's hard to justify spending 30 plus dollars at a deli for a quick afternoon bite and that is what the bill would have been like had we not ordered so conservatively. I have been here a couple times before and the matzah ball soup is amazing, because they add noodles and carrots and celery to it instead of plopping a matzah ball in some chicken broth like at other places in the area. Potato pancakes and lettuce wrap breakfast sandwhich are all great and a little more reasonably priced than most of the sandwiches. The desserts are HUGE and homemade and nothing is better than that!! The portions are LARGE, as fellow yelpers have mentioned and you certainly won't leave hungry for what you pay, but this is not the place for a quick, cheap bite by any means.

    (4)
  • Jen F.

Steve's is a staple of my life. I've eaten endless potato pancakes here and I love it every time. It's always going to be on the pricey side so you'll have to get over it. But they have a great prepared foods/deli area and a really clean well kept seating area as well. I enjoy their bagels and variations on them and lately I have been getting a Cobb salad from them daily for takeout. I always hold the bacon, add beets, and swap the deli turkey for freshly cut. Once I get it on the plate I use half the container of ranch and a lot of lemon and create a really extraordinary salad masterpiece. Try it, I promise I don't disappoint!!!

For the price and quantity of food Steve's gives me.. it's just not worth it to me. Please do not be mistaken.. their portion sizes are huge. But when you pay to dislike A LOT of food.. now that's just plain wasteful. Every time I have been there (time out- here's what I've ordered): -Chicken salad -Smoked Turkey sandwich -Chicken Noodle Soup .. it has been SO bland! maybe I'm ordering the wrong thing- I'll definitely check it out again and maybe use some of the tips of my fellow yelpers... I'll keep you updated!

I've always enjoyed their corned beef sandwich. I like the bread with the crispy crust. As for service, seriously, what do you need from them? It's a mall deli with formica tables. Get over yourselves. - extra star for no high chairs -

I am not sure what has happened to my favorite sandwich shop in Michigan. I was there yesterday and the corn beef sandwich was super fatty. This really affected the taste. It might be time to find another sandwich shop.

I think the best way for me to compliment Steve's Deli is to write about what it is not. Steve's is not a place where flavored cream cheese is served. That, my friends, is a good thing. Why? If a place serves flavored cream cheese, I don't want their bagel. I'm sorry. A place that serves flavored cream cheese has unholy abominations that pander to the lowest common denominator, the American sweet tooth. You'll find things like "spreads" or "shmears" in flavors like strawberry, honey walnut, and honey almond. Frankly, I can't deal with whipped cream cheese, which, to me, is half-flavor, half-strength, diluted cream cheese. Now, these shmears and spreads are whipped. Plus, they're all sweet. To me, the bagel and what goes on it are about the savory. Please don't make my bagel a cheese danish or other sweet pastry. No berries, cinnamon, sugar, or nuts deserve a place on a bagel. The greatest sin committed by these flavored-cream cheese places is the near complete lack of lox and the shunning of classic bagels, which have things like poppy seeds, salt, onion, and garlic. What do they have in place of lox at the House of Shmear? They have abominations like a lox shmear, which really just tastes like salmon-colored cream cheese with a little saltiness but nearly completely devoid of salmon flavor. Come on. That's like a Caesar Salad without the anchovy. The flavored-cream cheese places and their Cap'N Crunch, Fruit Loops, Apple Jacks and Raisin Bran bagels represent a corporate, sugar-laced dumbing down of deli staples much like Starbucks represents half-assed coffee whose beans aren't roasted enough to bring out all the flavor in the coffee. Let me now compliment Steve's for what they do have. They have lox; bagels; full-strength, full-thickness, plain cream cheese; sable; whitefish; gefilte fish; beef tongue; matzoh ball soup; pastrami; corned beef; chopped liver; egg salad; knishes; latkes; liverwurst; rye bread; Russian dressing as a sandwich topping--things a real deli would have. For me, there is a lot to be said for keeping classics alive. That is a process of preserving a culinary history, which served generations. This stuff is important. Over the years, I have enjoyed many of these deli classics at Steve's. I can't say that they're the best examples I have had of these classics, but I give kudos to Steve's for keeping them alive. There are some technical problems here and there. My salami and eggs were dry and overdone yesterday, for example. Generally, the portions are large, if that's a concern to you. Personally, I prefer quality over quantity. So, large portions are not something I actively look for. Let's face it. Many of us eat too much in this country. Maybe, eating smaller amounts of better quality food would make us a healthier country, but as our national food history after World War II suggests, it has been cheaper to make half-assed food with far too many sugar-rich, corn-derived (read: sugary, chemical, artificial, not in any way artisanal, corporate nastiness) "ingredients" in huge quantities than to make higher-quality food. This is plainly evident in our nation's groceries, restaurant chains, and our own bellies. I rather have a smaller amount of food from a place that has higher-quality ingredients like Zingerman's or Katz's. I'm sure I'll end up paying more, but I'll be getting a better experience. Unfortunately, Steve's doesn't reach the heights of places like Katz's and Zingerman's. Unfortunately, they also sway too far into the territory of quantity over quality. But hey, no Cap'N Crunch-Fruit Loops-Apple Jacks-Raisin Bran bagels are anywhere to be found. No shmears or cream cheese spreads are present. Lox and poppy seeds are in the house, and that, to me, is important.

I find Steve's deli to be very convenient for the area i run in. If your into quality foods and freshness then Steve's is your place. Today i had Tuna Noodle casserole! I like Steve's. Like all places, there are some great items and some more average ones on the menu. The Rueben sandwiches are really top drawer. They are humungous and well prepared. I highly reccomend these. And the soups are great too, albeit a bit pricey for take out. I have ordered a few of the dinners and taken them out a few times and I was la bit less than impressed as compared to other local deli's offering the same kind of fare (Stage on Orchard Lake Road for example). Seating can be spotty as there really are not enough tables, especially on a weekend. I also disclike that they close so early as this makes it impossible to get a takeout order to bring home dinner for me. I rarely can be there before closing time. The people at the counter and those that serve are all very freindly and accomodating and the quality of the items they sell, such a fresh bagels and rye bread are really good too. Occasionally we see coupons in the paper for specials that offer freebies if you order over a certain amount of food and when we see these we take advantage of them. They are usually good deals. Steve's is reccomended.

  • Haroun K.

The sandwiches are some of the best deli sandwiches in the area. No one can deny this. But, christ, the prices are obscene, bordering on Zingerman's. Yet Zingerman's sandwiches use far superior ingredients, and are far larger than Steve's sandwiches. Also, the fries are unreasonably thinly cut, and seating is uncomfortably cramped. The lines are crazy long because of the great sandwiches (which earns 4 stars), but there are better deli dining experiences in the area, especially the Stage.

This place is kind of an institution, and a lot of people like it. There are a million things on the menu, pages and pages; something for everyone I guess. Definitely quantity over quality. Food is passable, maybe, but nothing I would ever crave. Impatient, cigarette smoking, Blackjack-dealer style, old school waitresses try (unsuccessfully) to be funny and cute. I've been here twice, and would not go back. It's just not my style...but it's not a bad place really. On Yelp, 3 stars means "A-OK." That's about right. Uninspiring.

  • John S.

I've been to Steve's Deli on and off over the past 10 years and have always enjoyed my meals there. While the food is always very good during my last two visit's the service has been less than gracious, it almost seems like the servers are going out of their way to assist me. Maybe this is part of the allure for some however I feel that customers should not be viewed as interuption of your work but rather the purpose of your work.

Salt bagels, salt sticks and corned beef sandwich. That's what delis are about to me - and it made a good last meal in Detroit before heading back to the deli-deprived land of San Francisco. So, ordered the corned beef sandwich on rye bread with a side of Russian. I didn't go wimp and order lean - gimme the fat - and the sandwich had the good balance where it was not too fatty, and was the perfect last meal before I got on the plane (well, besides the saltiness of corned beef). Oh, and had a Dr. Brown's Black Cherry, because you have to. On the way out, I bought three salt bagels - best damned bagels in the US are in Detroit, well, second best - and noshed on them on the plane. Yay! Nirvana.

We returned to Steve's Deli today, and I have to say that while service was not great, it was okay, the food was really good. Corned beef and pastrami are what they do well here. Two adults could easily split a sandwich. They are huge! My almost 3 year-old daughter was in love with the fries and the pickles. It's cheaper than other delis in the area, but more expensive than some. Although the fact that you can split a sandwich will save you a lot of money here.

Wow, what can I say about this fabulous deli? I think sometimes people who aren't familiar with the portion-price aspect of a deli get a little bit of sticker-shock. But when your food comes, you see why. Cheesecake the size of a sneaker... a sandwich the size of your head... pretty standard (for delis and for Michigan in general). I've been here many times and have had it catered at work many times. The mashed potatoes are excellent. The salmon is good. Sandwiches, soups, everything has been delicious. Desserts are, like I said, gigantic and it's great to split it... or split it five ways. Their blintzes aren't as good as Bread Baskets but this a very good deli. If you ever need something catered, I'd consider this place as well. It has a home-cooked feeling to it that warms the heart.

My favorite spot to eat in Bloomfield Hills. Not on par with Zingermans by a long shot, but they have excellent corn beef and I pretty much everything I have had here with the exception of the large cupcakes which taste like cake from a box is of very high quality. Chicken Schnitzel is exceptional. Service is not great.

the closest deli to the 'ham area without having to go all the way to the WB. i love the chicken soup that has noodles in it, with matzah or without, it's the perfect cure for the common cold. you can take an entire jar of it home. the salads and omelettes are bomb too. detroit does deli right - and steve's is one of my favorites.
