This place is the cats pajamas! It's conveniently right off of Woodward, on the northeast corner of 14 mile. It's a classic setup, order and pay at the window, and moments later a hand extends out with your cone/cup/bowl in hand! The selection is also classic ice cream and frozen yogurt fare, with twists, flurries, sundaes, and all the tasty fix-ins to throw on top to choose from. The one dish that they offer that is a MUST TRY, is the bumpy cake sundae. If you've never heard of this, or have never tried it, it is simply amazing. Rich, silky, and sweet, it'll satiate even the strongest sweet tooth, and leave you feeling euphoric* (*results may vary, as I left feeling euphoric, with a bit of sleepiness, dreaming of swimming in a sea of bumpy cake) The pricing is fair, and the service is quick, given how the lines can justifiably get long on summer weekend evenings. Stick around on said weekend evenings, and you've got a front row seat to the Woodward Dream Cruise fanatics getting a head start, coasting down the avenue in their classic cars.

I grew up in the area but it wasn't until AFTER I graduated from college that I learned about Dairy Deluxe. To be honest, I'm a little sad that I missed out on 21 years of deliciousness. Dairy Deluxe has a simple exterior but don't let it fool you... the treats here are tasty and despite its Birmingham location the prices are more than reasonable! I highly recommend the Turtle Sundae. They make the perfect combo of ice cream, caramel, chocolate, and pecans. I haven't found a turtle sundae that is better anywhere.

What the heck took me so long to try this place? I clearly was missing out on their tasty soft serve. I tried their flavor of the day which was soft serve fresh berry twisted with vanilla and dipped in chocolate, holy yummy! I can't wait to come back again. Keep in mind it's cash only but they are super cheap so chances are you have enough change in your car to cover a cone.

***Review for the soft serve ice cream I have to say, being from Southern California who's exploring the Midwest, this might be one of my favorite soft serve place to go! Everything about this place is just so classic, and classic is kind of hard to find in today's trendy food world. This location is outdoors and you order your goods through a window. They have this big soft serve in a cone neon sign that I think is so adorable. The staffs are friendly, and their service is fast. You can park your car in front and some in the back; kind of cramped but doable. Then again, I find Michigan's streets kind of weird. It's also CASH ONLY and inexpensive. On my visit, I ordered the Boysenberry soft serve with almond crunch toppings in a waffle cone. Out of this world combination! Boysenberry soft serve was so delicious; it was something I never really had before. It was not too rich or too sweet, and really had this good aroma on your taste buds. The texture of the soft serve itself was a thick, creamy consistency. Maybe it's the cold Michigan weather, but the ice cream just doesn't melt as fast. The almond crunch topping taste like candy nuts. It's sweet, super crunchy, and beyond addicting. Get it on everything and anything, it's killer even on plain vanilla! I am happy to find a place that has delicious soft serve ice cream that is well worth it anytime, in any type of bizarre weather!

I love love love their almond crunch topping and they are the only ones who have it. Good soft serve and the staff has always been nice and friendly. We've been coming here for years. And when I say years I mean that my babysitter used to bring my brother and I when we were like 8 years old and now I have an 8 year old! This has been a long run. Did I mention the almond crunch topping? Yes, I will travel for it when I get the hankering. Sooooo tasty!

Great location. Great service that is always quick and makes the long lines go fast. Nothing super fancy or unique here, just a good solid spot to go grab ice cream after dinner in the summertime -- at least that's what my family used to always do. I recommend the Brown Cows (root beer float mixed up like a milkshake). My favorite thing on the menu by far!! I prefer Dairy Deluxe to the other ice cream shop nearby on Woodward (just south of 14Mile).

This is one of the best soft serve places ever. The new "mounds" creation is awesome! My family frequents the dairy d at least once a week in the summer.

Go to spot for an ice cream fix. The mix-in type cups are super good although I usually have a vanilla ice cream cone dipped in cherry shell. FAST and efficient servers. Go. Get your ice cream and sit along Woodward to watch the cars race down the street.

I've been going here since I was a kid, and it never disappoints. From a simple frozen yogurt to a decadent sundae, there is something for every type of sweet tooth here. I also like to ride my bike here and pretend that it cancels out the ice cream. That might be my favorite part. Prices are just right, too!

It's a cool ice cream stand and the people that work there are always friendly. They have crunch coat topping which is really good, but their chocolate milkshakes use the world's cheapest tasting chocolate syrup. Is that Hershey's syrup. They probably should use something better.

Best soft serve! Almond crunch topping is the best. Sundaes are good.. Lots of choices. Double D is our favorite!

This is the place I go for soft serve on Woodward IF I have cash. The others around the area take credit but it's cash only here. What I love about this place is the giant Soft serve cones and for $2, it's quite a deal. The soft serve frozen yogurt is also really awesome but cost a little bit more.

I can't get enough of this place!! Salty caramel, black forest, peanut butter sundaes among my favs. Everyone hangs out outside during the summer with their kids, dogs, friends. Lovely atmosphere, great soft serve. Def a must do in B'ham.

Just your standard soft serve. Good but not amazing. Granted, I had thought it would be frozen custard, so I was setting myself up for a world of disappointment. The chocolate soft serve was decent and chocolatey. The vanilla soft serve, on the other hand, was completely lacking in vanilla flavor, and sugar for that matter. I couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe if someone made a creamy sawdust flavor and completely eliminated the dusty/choky aspect. On the plus side, Dairy Deluxe has a ton of flavors, toppings, mix-ins, and other options; their prices are very cheap; and the roadside sign is very cool. In my opinion, Erma's trumps Dairy Queen, which in turn trumps Dairy Deluxe. I still need to try Custard & Co. though. Note: cash only.

Best soft serve. Ever. And with 5 other ice cream shops within a three mile radius, that says a lot. The bumpy cake sundaes and flurries are amazing, and they even let you come up with your own personal combinations! I was also surprised (in a good way) to hear that their pumpkin pie shakes are made with real pumpkin, nothing artificial. Quality ingredients and quality prices!

There was a time this summer where I was dropping by Dairy Deluxe almost every day - after the gym, no less. Their soft serve frozen yogurt is the most reassuring flavor and texture in the world. Plain vanilla or vanilla swirled with mango or blueberry or whatever special they have - out of this world. We would sit at the wooden fence at the parking lot as the sun set and have our cones and it was pure summer joy.

Every winter I look for the opening date for this shop and the countdown begins. I eat ice cream in February if they are open, I don't care. This is one of my favorite stops since my childhood. I really love the ice cream sundaes. My particular favorite is the black forest or turtle sundae. The blizzards are also amazing. I might go so far as to say it's the world's greatest soft serve. I was disappointed when they switched from fudgy fudge to syrupy fudge and increased their prices .50. But this place still churns out the goodness every spring and summer.

Dairy Deluxe is a teensy notch above A-Ok. There is always a line here, so it must be good, right? Well, it is good. It's just not mind-blowing. It's still just soft serve. They do make some good mix-ins/flurries. My daughter got the cake batter flavor, which was yummy! I've been here maybe three or four times, and I honestly can't really remember what I've had. Except for the chocolate dip. And I only remember that because it was disappointing. Dairy Deluxe gets points for being open before almost any other seasonal ice cream place...I think it was January 25th or something of the like this year! Awesome! I would personally rather go to Custard and Co just south of this place on Woodward, but if it's closed, then Dairy Deluxe makes an acceptable substitute.

This is my favorite ice cream place of all time. When I am in town I stop by for either a suicide slush cooler or a cherry dipped cone. It brings back one of the best childhood memories- of driving up Woodward on a summer evening with my dad in his MG. We'd stop at the hobby shop that used to be next door after getting ice cream. Even though I would be bored with the Hobby store in a matter of minutes, the ice cream induced release of endorphines left me singing Madonna to myself (this was in the 80s) while looking at toy trains. I love Dairy Deluxe so much I have a picture of the neon sign in my apartment for the mere reason when I look at it, it makes me happy. Definitely stop by for a flurry, ice cream sundae, cone, etc etc etc. They have it all.

Now this is what I call soft serve! A little bit of a farther drive down Woodward (cough cough like two minutes). My favorite flurry is mixing oreos and peanut butter cups! soo good! I'm pretty sure here they don't use Hydrox cookies like dairy mat. Also, chances are you might run into a Piston here... I believe it's a personal fave of Rip's! My beef with the place is the parking... too many people want ice cream- not enough parking! I can just hear people now saying, "there are people who don't have the luxury of even eating ice cream..." well, we do, and I want a better parking situation (please understand in no way am I poking fun of those less fortunate. seriously).

It beats Dairy Queen. Flavor of the day today was boisenberry and the vanilla has a buttery flavor. But the chocolate dip is pretty poor. They have huge selection of items including some old timer soda fountain classics. This is a neighborhood favorite and always a group of people hanging around and eating their ice cream. You don't find that at too many soft serve ice cream shops. Although right on Woodward, they are on the corner of a dead end street that dead ends at their back door so there is plenty of neighborhood feel in the back and side.

The raspberry yogurt shakes are excellent. There are many other excellent choices here.

The Best! Choices include a very good non-fat yogurt. Make sure to try the blizzards, especially, the pumpkin pie and cupcake! Open from February thru late November.

I am totally in love with Dairy Deluxe. Living in Royal Oak, I have a gazillion ice cream places close by, but we still make the trip to Dairy Deluxe when we want some ice cream (like we did last night). No other place even comes close! And you can feel guilt free while chowing down because the ice cream is 95% fat free! I have been coming here since my childhood, so I have a little experience with the menu...my current favorite is a mint chocolate chip and oreo flurry, but I also love the cupcake flurry with sprinkles (but no fudge and just vanilla ice cream). However, if you have not yet tried the upside down banana split then go there right this second and try it.. It consists of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, bananas, strawberries, pineapple, fudge, nuts and whipped cream. It's amazing...but order the small unless you are sharing with a group. Trust me, the medium is so big that it's pretty much served in a bucket.
