Not very good. At their attempt to create nu-Asian, fusion rolls, it does not turn out very good. At these prices, you can get much better at any other sushi restaurant in Oakland County. The sizes of the rolls were rather small. This restaurant does not fit into the Birmingham stereotype of "fine dining" or "classy," but does fit into some other ones such as "expensive."

Ate at this place twice for lunch (once dine-in, the other time carry out). Very good lunch menu. Sushi is delicious. I can say that the service is mediocre (probably because of language barrier). But, don't let that hinder you... the food rocks and thats the most important part!

Nice place a little but up from the main Street. Sushi was very good. Outside seating provided and at a nice Sommer Night what else you can ask for.

We should have walked out. We just left and this place left a bad taste in our mouths...mainly because of the service. We initially wanted to go to Sy Thai, but it was 9:40 and they were only doing carry-out. Seeing that this is next door and open until 10:30 we decided to give it a go. The first waitress approached us and said "are you ready to order." She then repeated her demand and yelled it at us. I had to ask for a sushi menu. I felt scolded and wanted to leave. - The bill was brought before the main course - I was charged for tamari and sriracha - my roll didn't have much fish in it All in all I hope this place closes. If you can't treat your paying customers nicely and generously you don't deserve to serve the community.

Fabulous Sushi! Fresh & delicious. I typically get takeout, but the few times I've dined in the service was pretty slow. It's not the cheapest, but it's pretty good!

It's a shame, and I'm disappointed to say I can't give it a good review (even though the food is great) due to the service & attitude of the owner. It's a bummer that it is now the only option for sushi in downtown Birmingham. I've dined here numerous times in the past 5 years (used to frequent weekly for lunch when I worked downtown Birmingham). Service has always been an issue, we've never seen the same server working there twice, we always have to seek out & ask servers for refills on drinks (even water) and the servers seem genuinely scared of the owner. My most recent visit was my last. They are overpriced for what they give you (even though the quality, presentation & flavor of the food are all great). Very small amounts of fish in the sushi. My husband ordered the BiBimBap with beef and he asked for extra beef in it (which he does at most Korean restaurants), willing to pay the extra charge. When it arrived it MAYBE had 1-2 oz. of meat in it. The server double checked and assured us that the chef put extra beef in it. We then asked for more, again willing to pay the extra charge for it. The owner refused to give us any extra beef... and then proceeded to argue with us about the dish and what it's "supposed" to be (focus on rice & veggies). We understand that, but still wanted more meat. She then insisted that we order a whole other dinner of Bulgogi. Bottom line is that the owner needs a serious attitude adjustment and a crash course on how to properly provide cheerful customer service as well as train (& treat employees) correctly so that she can actually keep a consistent staff.

The food is okay, but I expected it to be better quality for the price. I definitely think it's worth the drive to Noble Fish if you're craving sushi. The portions here tend to be on the smaller side. I do recommend their Sunday Brunch roll if you're looking for a larger roll. I have been there several times and have had mixed experiences with the wait staff, from downright unfriendly to doting.
(2)Brian H.
Really good sushi overall. I like the restaurant decor and how fresh its bibimbap and sushi are. I will definitely go there again.
(5)Shelley Z.
I'm not a big sushi eater but I do like it every once in awhile. This place has ok food and a pretty good selection. It's not the cheapest but I do stop in due to the closeness to work.
(3)Lizzy L.
I love sushi!! I liked the shiitake mushroom sushi and the edamame is delicious!! Overall I would go there again!!
(4)Rebecca B.
Okay so the food is still okay. But today they sorta pissed me off and I witnessed another upset customer... They had 2 tickets today at lunch, one was a carry out the other was my dad and I. I ordered a "lunch box" with 3 rolls and soup, my dad ordered 2 rolls and soup. His tea had a tea bag dangling on it - really? They can't brew a pot of tea? Sigh. Anyway, I asked if I could have the 3 rolls (as ordered it was cucumber, cucumber/avocado, and asparagus) be all the same (3 avocado rolls...which was CHEAPER than the ones in the box according to the menu) instead. Originally I was told yes, however the young waiter came back and told me that the chef couldn't substitute. I could understand if they were busy or if I wanted a more expensive roll in my box, but it was a cheaper roll and we were the ONLY people in the restaurant. Fail. THEN the carry out order person came in. She had a huge order which they placed all on one tray. She said, " these are going to different places in my office, can you separate them please?". They looked at her like she was nuts. She called her office and you could tell she was agitated. When she got off the phone, she asked again if they would please separate the rolls. They said no. Great, two customers and an office that won't return. Their food is good but their manners aren't.

This is my absolute favorite Sushi place! I'm always surprised that it's not busier. The staff is friendly and the food is fantastic. I personally recommend the Lion King Roll, The Firecracker Roll, and the Spartan Roll. My one issue with this place before was the price was too high to go regularly but the last time I went they had dropped the prices considerably, I absolutely give this place my highest recommendation.
(5)Ian S.
Crunchy California roll was delicious. Although when paying I paid for my meal with a card and was tipping with cash. When an employee saw that there was no tip, she gave me back my receipt and demanded I tip. Needless to say my tip stayed in my wallet.
(2)Aman S.
First time to this place. I liked the atmosphere. Miso soup was excellent. Spicy tuna and salmon rolls were good but I enjoy them spicier. I'd come here again.
(3)Carole H.
Very good sushi at reasonable prices, in downtown Birmingham. This spot isn't fancy - you don't take a first date here to impress them. But, once you've gone out a couple times and have things sealed down, this would be a great choice for a more casual weekday date. :) The menu has everything you'd expect and want a standard sushi joint to have - from specialty rolls to the traditional, to sashimi and nigiri, and all the non-raw options in between. We sampled a few rolls along with an appetizer of potstickers, and it was all very good. Wasn't very crowded when we were there, so our server was able to be very attentive to us. I don't often find myself around Birmingham, but next time I do, I'll keep this spot in mind. :)

We used to go to this place every time we go to Birmingham, not many sushi options there, the food is good, we are vegans so we were limited to choices in the menu, anyway, that is not why I'm giving one star. I noticed before there was a lady (guessing the owner), talking rude to the waiters, anyway, tonight was my last visit there, my husband has a service doggy, we never had a problem until today, she was rude, mean, she told me the dog couldn't be there, I tried to explain her why he was with us ( my husband was in the bathroom when she approached to the table, luckily), even the young waiter was being nice and trying to explain her but she didn't care, she said :" I don't care about your service dog card I'd or if he is a service dog, he is not allowed here and I am the owner", she said that so rudely and several times not letting anybody talk", she left and the young waiter apologized to me for her behavior. My husband got out from the bathroom and when I told him he simply told me "let's get out of here"... some people was walking in when I passed by her and told her "thank you for the nice treatment", she got nervous and started smiling, ( that smile looked so ridiculous on her face), I guess she never smiles, she doesn't even know how to... Never ever going back to that place, disgusts me so much this woman, the way she treats her employees and costumers, I hope someone opens 10 sushi restaurants in Birmingham and shut her down forever... What an A.....s.
(1)Jeremy G.
The food Is very good. The service is Very terrible. Be forewarned. It could easily be 4.5 but the service ruins that.
(3)Kathleen K.
This is within walking distance to our home, so we go here a bunch for take out or to dine in. We bring the kids and usually stick to mainstream Japanese items - rolls, dumplings, miso, etc. The staff is friendly and the food is solid. The atmosphere isn't great, nor is the physical menu - and a beer or sake would be nice, but we shouldn't complain - we're happy to have an accessible sushi restaurant in the hood.
(4)Tanya L.
Mediocre sushi. Ordered three basic rolls--spicy tuna, spicy scallop and "real" crab rolls, a miso soup and a seaweed salad. The rolls all tasted more or less the same, meaning tasteless. The crab one tasted like "krab", but not like real king crab it was advertised to be. The miso soup had TWO pieces of tofu, which was highly upsetting to my two-year-old. A bill of nearly $30 for store-grade bland sushi and a skimpy soup? That's what I get for blowing the closing time at Noble Fish.
(2)Idina L.
Update after going a few more times - Today we definitely had the 'substitute chef' and not the main chef. There were some temperature inconsistencies which is an instant ruined-sushi for my tastes. Plus, the rolls were too big and cut unevenly, and they were smothered with too much sauce..the delicate balance that we usually find at Birmingham Sushi Cafe was definitely absent today. Owners, please fire your off-day chef and hire someone who will pay attention to the fine details and make the sushi as well as your regular chef. It's sad to have such a good recipe ruined by temperature mistakes, lazy cutting, and over-saucing. The condition of menus is unacceptable. They were charmingly beat up when we first started going there, years and years ago, but they are completed tattered now, with scrawled Sharpie notes and price corrections and striked-out ingredients. I don't mind a well-worn menu but barely-legibly scrawling 'Contains Peanuts' in purple sharpie and then striking it through with black Sharpie is just ridiculous. Get it together. Maybe I'll print and laminate our own menus (they have nice menus on their Facebook page) so I don't have to deal with their scrawled and tattered menus, haha. Just to prove a point and to be annoying. Lastly, our server didn't know what 'saba' was, even though that's a common sushi fish, AND it's written on the menu. I had to order it in English, 'mackerel.' That kind of stuff just irritates me. That said, this was one bad experience in about 10 postive ones. I still love the unique sushi rolls that they offer and we'll definitely go again. I'm hoping the drop in preparation quality was a Sunday chef fluke and not a trend.

I was finally able to enjoy a sushi place close to home!! My group sat outside - where the service was not its best - a tad bit slow and forgetful with silverware, soy sauce, other basic things. but you have to be appreciative that there is a patio at the restaurant! I had a bim bim bap - which was exceptional !! there were more vegetables than other places I have tried in the hot stone bowl. Unfortunately, only their lunch special includes the miso soup and ginger salad -- therefore since it was dinner when I went I had to pay extra for the salad. The ginger dressing was delicious ! Overall my meal was about 20$ reasonable, but could be cheaper if I had eaten there for lunch.

It's the only sushi place in Birmingham worth going to-period. That's not to say that I am obsessed, because I have had better sushi, but when I don't feel like driving a long distance for sushi this place will do the job. I guess I take a knock down to this place because they don't offer alcoholic drinks, and I enjoy a glass of sake with my sushi. That being said, the service is fast and the place is clean. The rolls are inventive, and some are very good.
(3)Olivia S.
Very good and clean. A lot of variety. Must try!!

Hard to find good things to say about Sushi Cafe in Birmingham. I think the staff and the entire construct of the Bham location is quite different from the Troy mall location. - Sushi was old. Rice was starting to turn. Fish wasn't fresh. - Wait staff was young, confused, brough sushi before our soup. Forgot to give us chopsticks. Overall I'd say it was very disappointing. I would not return.

Posh without being pretentious is a good way to describe the decor of this newish addition to Hamilton Row. The artwork is pretty and the wood beams and hanging paper lanterns gives this place a cozy feel. The booths are somewhat private too. The food is fantastic. This may not be the cheapest place to get your sushi fix, but the food here is very fresh. We started with a seafood pancake ($7.00) for an appetizer. It was much like okonomiyaki, a Korean pancake, but with shrimp, scallops and mussels. It was delicious. It was about the size of a salad plate so it made for a great starter for two. The mixed greens house salad had a slightly spicy ginger dressing. The shrimp and veggies tempura was attractively presented and the tempura batter was perfectly crisp. My meal, the Salmon on the Fire maki roll was very flavorful and had a bit of a bite to it. I don't recall all the fillings, but it had cream cheese, crabmeat, avocado, asparagus, a spicy mayo and was topped with a thin slice of salmon. It was then topped with panko bread crumbs and baked. Not the cheapest maki at $13.00, but worth the indulgence. Some of their entrees are as high as $37.00 for Kobe Beef or $24 for Chilean Sea Bass. However, you can stop by after a movie at the Palladium and partake in an Avocado roll for only $3.50 and a mug (no little cups here) of Stash green tea ($1.50). They have over 50 maki rolls to choose from. I wish this place well. The service was pleasant and quick. It is right around the corner from the big parking garage behind the movie place and with two hours of free parking you can take your time to savor some of the freshest sushi in town.

Waitstaff was nice, sushi was soggy? but I will be back.

I would like to have a NA rating as there is no wine or beer. I had the DT's so badly I can't remember what the food was like. The two servers who took care of us were very sweet to my 6 year old daughter.
(3)Lenny Liliana M.
I have been here twice. I ordered miso soup and vegetable rolls. I loved them!

"Talk about massive potential for growth" - Bill Murray, "Stripes" Every now and then I try a place expecting the absolute worst. Some of the time it has to do with multiple negative Yelp review and I'm just curious to experience the horror first hand. Other times, and I know this is shallow of me, it will just be about my experience in the restaurants in the surrounding area. For those of you who follow my reviews, you will note that my opinion of restaurants in the Birmingham area hovers around my opinion of pond scum and in some cases (Quattro, this means you) lower. I have typically found the high end eateries in B'ham to be all style, no substance. Ironically, my favorite restaurant, Forest Grill, is also in Birmingham, but on the Troy side of Woodward.... hmmm, I wonder if that means something. Birmingham Sushi Cafe is a place that I was expecting the worst for the latter reason. I am happy to report I was wrong in this case. I like what they're doing at BSC. At first glance, I truly thought I was in for another B'ham craptastic restaurant... Highly stylized interior... check Multiple ethnic cuisines... check I'm the only one in the restaurant... check Sushi menu comprised of a gajillion deep fried, cream cheese laden, sports team named rolls... blank????????????? Sushi chefs of non-Japanese persuasion.... blank????????? I was stunned! Japanese sushi chefs and rolls that you actually find in Asia (there are a couple of nontraditional type rolls). Buoyed by this, I decided to stick to sushi only. I ordered maguro (tuna), hamachi (yellowfin), saba (mackerel), amaebi (raw prawn), unagi (fresh water eel), and my favorite, uni (sea urchin roe). All, save for the uni, were nigirizushi. (The uni, because of its general phlegm-ball consistency was of the gunkanmaki architecture). Every single piece i received smelled like the ocean. They served the prawn heads deep fried (you don't see that too often around here). You could eat each piece in 1 bite, and no one batted an eye when I ate my sushi with my fingers. While all the fish was excellent, the saba and the uni were the stars. The saba, which has a tendency to go bad rapidly and become very strong was almost delicate in flavor. The uni, which goes bad even faster, tasted like butter (seriously!). I must also comment on the knife work of the chefs. One of the things that really bothers me about most sushi places in the D is the scattershot knife work. The chef who was working on mine... I watched him make the sushi... managed to make each cut of fish uniform in size, shape, and thickness. Well done. As this review reflects my one, and so far only, visit to BSC, the three star may be considered only temporary. If the quality and execution of the sushi remains at a high level on subsequent visits, the review will go up in star power. There is massive potential for growth at BSC.

I cannot believe I did not know about this place sooner. Every time I go is a great experience. The staff is great, the food is delicious, and it is surprisingly fast. Who could ask for more.
(5)S W.
Fantastic restaurant, highly recommended. We appreciate the very nice staff who are always attentive.
(4)Mike M.
This place is average when it comes to the sushi and asian dishes. However, what warrants the truly average rating is the out-of-date pricing. We were taking a walk this past weekend and saw the menu posted on the front window. It was cold out, so the spicy seafood soup sounded good at $5. However, when we received the bill after ordering two of the soups, the bill had the soups charged at $7.95 each. I can see some mistakes being a little bit off, but when we are talking about around a 60% price increase I think it's important to update your menus, especially the one posted on the window and front door. We would not have come in for a bowl of soup at that price. Faulty advertising does not earn repeat business.
(2)Colleen C.
Went here on a Friday, had miso, a spicy salmon roll, and decided to take a walk on the slightly wild side and try a tempura sweet potato roll. Both were awesome. I also tried the green tea mochi ice cream. The server was very polite and quick. The place was very cozy and classy. Prices were very reasonable and the menu had so many options and things I've never tried before. I will definitely be coming back and hopefully they'll have some sake to try too!
(4)Henry B.
Went here with Brian B. and Dave S. before going to Laser Quest (review for LQ upcoming. You're pretty excited about that, I can tell). The service here was pretty good. The place was empty on Christmas Eve Eve so that might explain it. Sushi here was pretty average. It was good, don't get me wrong. But it's really hard to stand out as a sushi restaurant. Sushi is like burgers. It's hard to find some truly stand-out ones. I don't like the fact that there is not fountain soda. Just canned. I'd eat here again but I wouldn't take my wife here for our 5th or 10th year anniversary. Maybe an oddball year like 6th year. Henry out.
(3)Nikki B.
Not bad, not my favorite. Good place to go when other places are closed at lunch (Ronin). The spicy tuna reminded me of salmon because it tasted smoky. It has avocado in it which surprised me. The spicy California roll was tasty, but the sauce is on top and tasted kind of watered down. The California roll was ok. Lunch specials. Got all 3 rolls with a salad for 16 bucks. Would rather wait for Ronin to open at 5p.
(2)Nickie P.
Got takeout from here the other day, and everything was great! I loved the spciy tuna roll.
(4)Cyndi J.
Service was quick and the food was awesome. Spicy Tuna wrapped in cucumber and the spring rolls were so fresh and delectable!! Mmm!!
(5)Gina S.
Just.not.a.fan. Meh. It was expensive and the seating was horribly uncomfortable...I don't care how authentic it is or how cool it looks from a decor standpoint. My back hurt when dinner was over. The rolls were fairly expensive for the size and quality. There is no alcohol served there. Our server seemed inexperienced and not particularly attentive, welcoming or friendly. Oh, and let's not forget the added bonus of dealing with the clusterf***of parking, since you share the closest garage with the theater and a bajillion other restaurants. Not impressed. Won't be back.
(2)Sarah M. B.
I for the most part agree with the other 3 reviews....however, my service here blew. It blew hard. Then it blew harder. I got seated and saw other tables come strolling in and I just knew it was going to be one of those "don't drink all your water because you will be fucked if you want more" nights. However, I am willing to overlook this because I am pretty sure they were unprepared for how busy a new place would be a on a cold thursday nite. When my friend joined me she tried to shoot the shit, I said, "Don't talk because when the waitress comes we need to have our entire order ready" 15 minutes later my friend got her water. 10 minutes later our full order was taken. That sucked because we felt so rushed to have our order ready we couldn't really review and take our time exploring a new place. Now on the the important part, after my rant-the FOOD. Granted, our veggie tempura appetizer came when we were almost done with our sushi, it was good, just as tempura always is. We started with 2 house salads with the ginger dressing and this was one of the more impressive basic house salads I have had at a sushi place...aside from the fresh strawberries in it, it was large and fresh and had an array of greens instead of a handful of iceberg out of the bag. The fish was fresh and flavorful and the rolls were average size...I have had rolls with a little more fish in them before. However, I was satisfied. They also offer a brown rice option, which I would have liked BUT I knew on a night like this that was asking for trouble. Someone else mentioned the Firecracker roll....it was FANTASTIC(keep your water glass full) and I cannot wait to go back and have it again. It's pricy but filling and spicy-crab tastic. I also loved the soft-shell crab roll...the basics were done as expected-tuna roll, philly roll, etc. I am looking forward to going back with someone that is more into the 'raw fish' sushi than the super american-ized rolls. I will for sure go back, and hopefully they will have had their wings under them at that point to be properly staffed and organized, should it get busy. I was glad I wasn't in a hurry and with a friend whose company I enjoyed AND I got good food, eventhou I had to wait...otherwise it would have been one miserable experience. I hope also they at least get a beer/wine license eventually too, that will only increase business tenfold and ensure the death of nasty ass Tokyo sushi down the street.
(4)Danyal C.
I went here on a recommendation from a friend, inside is very modern down to ikea tea mugs. Reading the other reviews on this place, I expected poor waiter service. Which in part was correct, as much as it appears upscale to have the waiter sparingly visit the table, it really hurts the level of service. My tea was never refilled and was served to me in a mug with a bag. For a sushi establishment I'd like to see fresh green tea or at the very least ditch the bag. Onto the sushi, I found the quality to be very good and the fish was very fresh. I had the "strawberry roll" that was fantastic combination of sweet, spicy and savory. A first for me. This cafe also serves Kobe beef, which is also top notch. They fit very well with other higher end eateries in Old Birmingham. I would come visit this place again if I was traveling out that way again. The chefs are all Japanese and produce a quality product. Surprisingly there isn't a jar for them which is really were the tip should go. Perhaps sticking to the custom of not requiring it. My favorite sushi place in this area.
(4)Brian B.
I came here thinking I was going to be ordering a lot of sushi, but was excited to see that they offered quite a bit of Korean food as well, so that completely changed my mindset. The service was fine, but my party was the only one in there. I was a little surprised by that, but it is the holiday season. There are a bunch of sushi rolls that can be had here and a huge plus is that they list what is in them. I was mulling over several of them until I spotted the Korean food part of the menu. I can't resist bulgogi. I simply can not. I did order one roll just to try. Spicy Tuna. It was just OK. I really want to come back and try more before I make a final judgement, but for now, I'll stick to Noble Fish based on price and deliciousness. Back to the bulgogi. I ordered it and wasn't disappointed. I was moderately impressed with the portion. A lot of places I've been to, the portion lacks. The meat was tender and very nicely trimmed. I definitely want to come back to try a few more of the Korean meals. Kalbi, seafood pancake, etc.
(4)Dave S.
I'm finding that more times than not when I get sushi in Macomb or Oakland county, the quality is much the same. Obviously not all sushi restaurants are created equal and some seem slightly fresher than others for various reasons. All in all I think BSC stands up to most other places I've been to in terms of food and fish quality. Unfortunately, for me, once you look past the fish, it's like a diner. If I worked near Birmingham I would say this is a great place for lunch. No flash, no flair, no fuss. Just in and out, a quick and painless dining experience. Couple reasons why I didn't go higher on my review... 1.) Salmon. I thought my salmon nigiri was a little meh. The color and taste was sub-par. I know I said earlier they were on par with most places in the area but this was one piece out of my entire meal, so why let one bad apple spoil the bunch, right? (note that I also had yellowtail and tuna nigiri and both were a-ok) 2.) Spicy Tuna. I usually use a spicy tuna roll as my benchmark in comparing one place to another...as well as salmon or tuna nigiri. One thing I do not like is when the spicy tuna is served as a blended or chopped up mixture. There may be a more formal term but chopped up mixture should be good enough. I prefer the tuna to be in nice healthy chunks and coated with the spicy mayo. I prefer this for several reasons but won't go into all of them here...I can already see this review stretching itself. 3.) Presentation. I like a little razzle dazzle when I go out for sushi. My meal was not arranged in any manner that showed me the chef put any extra thought or effort into it, almost like fast food sushi. It was also presented on a plain white dish. A more unique serving plate/plank would have been nice as well as some more of flair with the rolls, nigiri, wasabi and ginger...rather that just slapping it down. 4.) Menu. I liked the amount of specialty rolls offered and the fact that all the ingredients were listed (not like Noble Fish). However, I thought the nigiri selection was slim and I was disappointed to not see any specials or specialty rolls/nigiri based on what was in-season or fresh into the store. On the plus side, I enjoyed my meal on a taste level. Not mind blowing but certainly not sub-par. I thought the spring rolls were delicious and the portion was right on. The staff was friendly and accommodating, no issues here. If I am footing around Birmingham to shop or catch a movie or whatever, I wouldn't hesitate to stop into BSC if the mood for sushi should strike me, but I'm not going to go out of my way to dine with them when there are places I like closer to home.

I have been going here for years and one thing for sure the quality and service has been in a steady and consistent decline. My experience today was bad enough that I had to come to Yelp to protect the masses. First, It took forever to get our waters which really sucked because the weather was hot and humid. Second, our waitress was taking forever and never came to check on us. Third, the quality of the spicy tuna was shockingly low, It looked look a cross between salmon, tuna, and a hot dog. Fourth, the waitress messed my chicken teriyaki up and had to return it while i waited 10 min and my fiancee finished her meal by then. The chicken teriyaki had vegetables that were not fresh which is really tough to eat. In summary, everything took forever, the food was low quality, the orders were mixed up, and the waitress didn't seem to care or even offer any courtesy credit. I had to ask for the owner who then sent me his son who agreed on all my points and decided to take a whopping $2.63 off of my bill which was truly slap in the face. Im done with this place and wont come here ever again.

It's a bit pricey for just ok sushi. I don't know where they manage to find the servers, but they seem to be consistently clueless (yet I keep going back so the blame is on me). The last time I went, I took a group. That time, for whatever reason, the waitress grouped all the ordered sushi on one large plate. When asked what was what- she didn't know. Then she disappeared never to return until time to drop the check. We had to sort out the different rolls and still couldn't fully sort it out because what little she did tell us was wrong. She clearly did not know the menu and wasn't pressed to learn. The time I went before that the deep fryer was broken and the owner(?) was arguing with the poor repair man that she wasn't going to pay him for the service call. She wouldn't sign his paper or give him her name. What a mess. I want to like this place just out of the lack of other sushi options, but they're making it hard. I probably won't be back

This is my favorite Sushi in the Birmingham area. I love it. Everyone who I've brought here loves it too. The service is great and fast too. The sushi is really fressh
(5)Andrew F.
Anybody ranking this place higher than two stars is completely ignorant of fresh sushi and/or decent food in general. I'm sure 95% of customers walk in, glance at the menu, order a california roll and proceed to give this place 4-5 stars. This was my experience - I walk in and notice some investor has dumped a decent amount of money into the decor. Chuckling to myself, I sit down next to the bar at the window looking over the menu. I notice an incorporation of korean food ( hence two stars ). Quickly scrolling the restaurant with my eyes, I see an empty room and no service. Finally after 10 minutes of being seated, an inexperienced 18 year old takes my order, which included the bulgogi, a spicy tuna hand roll, a piece of yellow tail and a piece of tako (octopus). The bulgogi was high grade dog food, my spicy tuna hand roll came in a regular 6 piece roll, the yellow tail was old, and the octopus was partly frozen. After having the octopus removed from my bill with a bit of hostility from the waiter, I scribble my signature and run out. Immediately upon jumping into my car, I light a cigarette, trying to remove the taste and experience.

My cousin and I love sushi, she lived in Japan for a year and majored in Japanese culture so when we have the money, we like to go out and try different sushi places. Tried Sushi Cafe for the first time last night and let me tell you, the food was delicious, the decor was trendy, the chairs comfortable. But I will never, ever go back here. The service was absolutely abysmal. We were sat at a table for 2 in the very back of the restaurant, and given our menus. We decided what we wanted to order in about 2 minutes. About 10-15 minutes after we had decided what we wanted, closed the menus and put them on the edge of the table, our waitress comes by and says, "is everything alright, do you need anything?" I was confused, but politely told her that we were set to order - 2 Hot teas, 2 miso soups, a small Tempura appetizer and 4 sushi rolls to share. About 10 minutes later our soup and tea came out (which was served with the tea bag in the cup, something I've never seen at a sushi restaurant, but we'll let this one slide). I was enjoying my miso and conversation with my cousin when I put my spoon down, only to have the half-full bowl of soup swiped from me by the waitress - I tried to say something but she was long gone. Another 10 minutes go by and our sushi rolls come out. We haven't received our appetizer, we don't have any plates, and there is no wasabi or ginger served with the sushi. The waitress says "I'll be right back with plates" and disappears for a good 10 minutes. I finally got up, walked to the front of the restaurant and stood at the hostess stand for a minute before anyone asked if I needed something. I told the "manager" who addressed me that we were waiting for plates, wasabi and our appetizer - she walked away without acknowledging what I had said. Then the waitress comes back to our table and asks "how is everything tasting" - note: we haven't tasted anything because we don't have plates. She comes back with plates (that are dirty by the way) and our Tempura appetizer - no apology for the delay. At this point, my cousin and I are laughing because you only see stuff like this in movies...it was amazing how horrible the service was. To top it off, when they brought us the bill (which totaled well over $50) I asked the waitress if there was any way she could comp our $7 appetizer since it came out well after the rest of the meal. She asked the manager and came back to tell me, "you ate the food, you have to pay for it". I was sure there was some kind of misunderstanding, so I asked to speak with the manager. 10 minutes later she comes over, not asking if she can help but telling me (in a loud voice) "you ate the food, you must pay". The continues with "if you didn't like the service, you don't have to leave a tip." My cousin burst out laughing, and I just smiled and told her no one in that restaurant was getting a tip from me. I handed her my credit card and wrote a big fat zero on the tip line (I have never done this in my entire life). People that sat in our area waited over 15 minutes to get their order taken or even be greeted. Some got up and left, I don't even think the waitress noticed. Another girl behind us go the wrong food sent to her & they didn't even try to fix their mistake. The waitress just said, "oh sorry, the chef made a mistake" & left the table. We weren't the only ones experiencing this kind of service... The food was good, but if you have to have it - save your sanity and order take out - I'll never set foot in this restaurant again.

I've eaten at the Birmingham Sushi Cafe twice. The first time, the meal and the service were excellent. My wife and I ordered a mixture of rolls and sushi, and the food was excellent, brought in a tiemly manner, by a pleasant wait staff. But, a little pricey. I liked it so much, I returned to place a large carry-out order a few weeks later. It was late, just before 8:00pm. The place was empty, and the waitress was disinterested in waiting on me. I think they all wanted to leave. I placed my order (and left a nice tip in the tip jar that the shusi chief had to notice), and waited. And waited...and waited. Finally, the order was finished and packed up and off I went after spending a small fortune. Got home and opened the package.....it was like a was short-changed. Tiny pieces of sushi, little tiny rolls, very dissapointing portions. The food tasted a little old. I just shrugged it off to the timing...... I will go back one more time (it's really close to my house). If it's good, I'll return, if not, never again. Will stick to Sushi Hanna on Woodward & Square Lake Road. Always good quality at a good value. Nice people, good service.

Good sushi and nice service. Definitely the best affordable sushi place in Birmingham. I consider Chen Chow to be more of an upscale restaurant than a typical sushi house. I have had better, but they have great rolls and the food is fresh.

LOVED it! Haven't had sushi in a while - last time was a not so pleasant experience, but went here with my family. It was amazing! White tuna rolls, delish! But tried something I normally don't, the tempura sweet potato roll! OMG! Like a slice of heaven. Now I'm craving it everyday! Will be back this weekend for carryout! Super cute, clean, big fan!

It's pretty hard to screw up Japanese food, right? Nope, not here, here they succeeded at every level. This place is a complete disaster. Let me explain: Let's start by stating the fact that it does not even server beer not to mention sake, wine, etc.... The decor, well, why would anyone place a massive (50+") TV covering an entire wall next to a sushi bar? It doesn't fit the motive and is like crack for your eyes as you attempt to have a conversation with the person sitting next to you. To top it off they were broadcasting some football game in grainy low-def. The experience was like having someone smash your eyes and wave multi-colored glow sticks in front of them. Food? Fresh is apparently not an option here. The tempura shrimp included 2 shrimp and 4 vegetable items in a thick chemical tasting batter. The tempura sauce was watered down soy sauce. At one point I noticed the exact color and oil pattern flowing on it as on the soy sauce next to it. Sushi? Honestly, I've had better rolled, more fresh sushi at Target. Zero taste, just stale, salty fishy garbage. The two sushi "chefs" at the bar failed to even make eye contact which is a first after hundreds of sushi bars I've sat at worldwide. So simply stating that the food here is bad would be giving this dump credit. It's a massive FAIL at every level. Absolute garbage not worth the inflated check.

I love Sushi Cafe. I do feel that their pricing is above what it should be, but it doesn't stop it from being a family favorite. Everyone in my family loves the bibimbap, served sizzling in a hot stone bowl with fresh vegetables, egg, meat of your choice and spicy sauce. The rice continues to sizzle and crisp where it touches the bowl. Delicious. I know that the sushi snobs are probably turning their noses up but you should not knock their deep fried sushi until you have tried it. It is just flash fried to give the outside a nice distinct crisp. Try the bomber roll if you like it hot, and the fusion roll is my second favorite deep fried roll. For special occasions we have gotten the sushi boat - a beautiful assortment of sushi presented on a model schooner. Lots of food for a group to share and fun and unique. No alcohol served here so if cocktails are a necessity better look elsewhere. If you are looking for a fun food adventure, try Sushi Cafe.
