Though I want to root for the local business that is established and a mainstay of Berkley, I simply cannot bring myself to give Kam's more than 2 stars. It is outdated WWII era holdout Americanized Chinese food and not even very good at that. I have had serviceable enough Egg Foo Young, Sweet & Sour Chicken, and Sesame Chicken from Kam's. But everything else I've had was either borderline bad or nearly inedible. Dumbed down flavors and complete lack of spiciness even when dishes are ordered "hot". My wife happens to love the place. She grew up around the corner and this is the Chinese food she grew up on, so I think they're is a certain amount of nostalgia at work there. Myself? I couldn't really think of any other reason to go here aside from the fact there is literally nowhere else in Berkley to get Chinese food. I'm considerably more into Thai/Vietnamese (and even Japanese/Korean) than I am Chinese food however... particularly so vs Americanized Chinese food. So take my criticism with a grain of salt if you don't happen to share my bias. If you fantasize about big plates of sweet & sour chicken and almond chicken and egg rolls and fortune cookies this place might just be for you. Prices are also a little higher here than they should be (for what is is) and just like every other reviewer has mentioned... Cash Only.

I love this place!!! I don't understand the low reviews for them on Yelp. Order the chicken with "all white meat". The General Tso's chicken is very spicy when you order it "very spicy". It is the spiciest Chinese food I've ever had. All other stuff we've had there was also excellent!!! Cash only. Go here and you won't be disappointed.

They advertise that they are the best Chinese in town. They forget they are the only Chinese in town. I have lived on every corner of the country and I grew up on Asian cuisine in Seattle, and this is the absolute worst Chinese food I have ever been exposed to in my life. Anyone who eats here seriously needs to go anywhere else for a pleasant surprise. I live only 200 yards away, so this place is a massive disappointment.

Consistently good Chinese carry out. I live in royal oak but travel to Berkeley because even though I pass about six other carry outs Kams is so much better. Personally I like the shrimp in lobster sauce and the sweet and sour shrimp. Cash only.

I would give negative stars if that were possible. Very poor customer service and I can say the same for their food. My order was not correct. I brought that to their attention and at no time did they offer to remake my meal or offer your refund my money. This was not the first time they have messed up an order of mine. Kam's has lost a customer.

I wish I could write a positive review about this place because I bet they are honest people trying to earn a living, but the place just doesn't have good Chinese. All around, I have had much better at other establishments. Add that I need to pay in cash and can't not use my debit card makes it even less likely for me to return.

The rating for this chinese restaurant depends on what you are looking for. If you want authentic then this is by far not the place. If you are looking for Americanized Chinese food with lots of sauce to eat with your rice, then this is the place. I think this place is a good stand by if you don't want to go farther or pay more for Chinese food. My wife loves the veggie lo mein. Nice slurpy Cantonese style noodles with plenty of gravy to make it slide down. If you are a fan of Americanized Chinese food, this is a solid place. The locals love it.

Poor Kams! Don't yall know it wont be authentic from the get go? This is not the best place ever but coming from the south as I did, where the Chinese restaurants are ATROCIOUS, I am quite pleased and usually fulfilled! I get all my sauces on the side when ordering from Kams and it helps out a lot and the Three Gem Lo Mein is super YUMMY! My husband and I are fans! And who cares if its cash only! They get taxed on those machines and if you can't find someplace to pick up 20 bucks you probably shouldn't be going out anyways! Its cheap. its Close. Its food! The End (The Wizard Has Spoken)

On Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, hubby & I got carryout from Kam's Express and were miserably sick with diarrhea!!! We ordered Chicken Lo Mein, General Tsao's Combo Plate, & Almond Chicken. First, when we opened the containers, the Almond Chicken gravy was very lumpy and cold (we only live 1 minute from them), the Chicken Lo Mein had old crunchy rice noodles mixed with soft noodles, and heavily coated with gravy to camoflage the old & new noodles. Funny..., I was turned off when I looked at and started eating the Almond Chicken & the Lo Mein, but I was so hungry & had been craving Chinese for some now. Within 30 minutes, I first had the most severe stomach cramps and ended up in the bathroom (I'll spare you the gory details). I hadn't yet mentioned anything to my husband, and within minutes he was running upstairs with the same stomach issues! I've had food poisoning before, but never to the extent we did that evening! We will NEVER eat Kam's Express food again! Maybe we got carryout on the WRONG night, but it left a lasting impression! BIG MISTAKE!

Oh Kam. Your spring rolls are so fresh. Your General Tso is so dope. You are the best Chinese food place in town, and not the slightest bit modest about it. You shun modern technology, like a credit card processor, as if you were Amish. You charge extra for duck sauce. The old lady runs the place like a prison yard boss. Kam for the win.

I got the Mongolian beef dinner combo and some fried wontons. This place is cash only and pretty cheap with large Portions That said, the Mongolian beef was slimy and didn't taste very good. Chicken fried rice that came as a side was pretty much just brown lookin rice with maybe some veggies or chicken in there but rather flavorless. The wontons had barely anything in them and were more or less just eating fried wonton wrappers. If you like that no descript brown sauce plus veggies and meat which is classic american Chinese food then go for it, you'll get a lot of food for your buck Personally I ended up tossing most of the food after a few bites - if I'm gonna eat greasy junk food and get fat, it should at least taste good. I won't return

I really wouldn't eat here again. I would not even send my worse enemy here to eat. I ordered hot and sour soup and a General Tso's chicken combination plate. The hot and sour soup was not spicy at all. When I eat hot and sour soup I want it to be very spicy and I was looking for that spicy kick and it never came. In the combination platter; The fried rice was just very bland. Honestly, it didn't even taste like fried rice. It taste like rice that was boiled and they just threw random pieces of small meat in it. It had no vegetables and dry pieces of meat. I only got one pack of soy sauce like that was going to help I asked for medium spice in my General tTo's chicken and it taste like it didn't have anything in it. The only good thing about the dinner was the egg roll. I will never ever eat from here again. Very Disappointing

45 bucks, for veg fried rice ,veg low main+ tofu, sweet and sour chicken , general's tso combo plate, 3 orders of spring rolls, they forgot my crab ragoons, rip off, she adds it up by hand who now's about her math, don't ask for extra hot sauce you might get one, food isn't bad just not worth it for the price. Like to keep it local but come on kams, try a little harder.

Finally tried this place after years. I have a few Chinese staples so I often stick to them. I really wanted to like Kam's. They only do carryout - New York style. Worker was nice. Got shrimp fried rice extra green onion. Was solid but nothing standout. Liked there were many bean sprouts. May try another dish here or there. Liked the Yelp sticker on the door. Should hve photographed it. One cool thing is many Chinese boxes hve ditched the metal handle. Which is old school and not microwave safe, thus probably why they hve faded. Kams uses the old school metal handle boxes.

Cash only veggie heavy Chinese food. Had the cashew chicken and was not impressed with the taste or composition of the dish. There was barely any chicken or cashews and the amount of celery was comical. Overall a pretty bland dish. Not worth the $10. Also, they do not accept credit cards and there is no ATM on site; the closest ATM is in the CVS down the street. If you are a vegetarian looking for a quick dinner option, this place is perfect for you!

I really hate to blast a place when it's probably just some good people trying to make an honest living, but man...their food was SO bad. We ordered the almond boneless chicken and General Tso's. I also ordered hot and sour soup and an order of spring rolls. When my gf opened up her almond chicken, it looked like there was a thick layer of brown jelly/sludge all over the top. It didn't really look like the gravy one comes to expect on almond chicken. The flavor wasn't horrible and the portion was quite sizeable, but I'd definitely trade an uptick in quality over the gigantic portion. I like food. A lot. I rarely leave leftovers, but in the case of Kam's...I only ate about 1/3 of my soup and General Tso's chicken. The soup was very thick...way thicker than I normally expect for Hot and Sour soup. It seemed like it was almost the consistency of the gravy on the almond chicken. The General's chicken was overly breaded, lacked spice, and tasted like it wasn't very good quality. The spring rolls were overly doughy and tasted like something you'd expect out of the frozen food section of your grocery store that you'd microwave (which is probably what they did). I don't know. Again...I hate to come to Yelp to slam a place, but I'm looking out for my fellow Yelpers. The stuff doesn't taste fresh. It seems as if everything is probably bought in bulk - frozen. I hate wasting food. I hate feeling like I didn't get my money's worth. Even in the most dire of circumstances, I would not be eating Kam's again. Oh...and if you want a fortune cookie, you need to order them by the dozen. Because everybody needs 12 fortune cookies. As for the debate about Americanized Chinese food, etc. I love me some non-authentic Americanized Chinese food. I'll suck down General Tso's chicken like it's going out of style. That being said...this is not good no matter how you slice it.

Extremely disappointing !! Moved here recently and was pleased to have Chinese food in walking distance.. Won't be back!! Beef and broccoli and supposedly other veggies was tough beef? and overload of broccoli stalks...!! Not one but two orders!!! They made quick visit to trash can .. past my dog!! Guess their sign " best Chinese food in town " means the only Chinese food in town!! My advice, leave town( Berkley) for good Chinese !!!

Hmmm....tried it for the first time yesterday. General Tso chicken and Sesame Chicken. It's the same chicken pieces, just different sauces. It was "OK" not Yummy or WOW. I'll tell what I liked and didn't like, since you may think different. The chicken pieces were the smalled curled up kind, not like the puffed breaded kind, if you know what I mean. Like thinner breading maybe? and the ends all curl up and stick together to make bigger clumps. The sauce was good, but thin and runny. I like the puffed breaded chicken, and a thicker sauce, almost like a glaze, and there was NO spice at all, for being General Tso, so you may have to specifiy better how spicy you would like it. I didn't eat it all, so for $9, it's not my cup of tea. The lady was nice, it was fast service, but I don't think I'd go back. At least not get any chicken dish if I did. Some times places I've been too, use larger flat pieces for the Almond Chicken, if that's so, I may try that. Egg roll was typical.

I wish this place was better because I love that I can walk there. That aside, they only take cash which is just a pain. The general tao chicken was pretty bad. Some of the other food we've tried from there was eh okay. They are closed on Mondays which is just odd. Probably my least favorite Chinese place that I have ever been to.

EDIT: The last several times I've gone the food has been very subpar. I used to love this place and would drive out of my way to go here. I won't be back again. If I want the low standard of food they are now serving, there are plenty of local places to get it from. The last few times I've ordered they barely put any sauce in the meal. They used to load it up with great tasting sauces. The last General Tsos had a watery sauce that was disgusting. The last Sesame chicken barely had any sauce, try eating dry Chinese fried food, bleh. The last meal I ordered was sweet and sour chicken with a fluorescent pink sauce resembling the cheapest Chinese food restaurants around. No veggies, a couple pieces of pineapple. Hard to believe this was the same place I went to. Then I asked for an egg roll with my combination, NOT the double rice. I got the double rice any way. Maybe times are tough and they have to cut back? Well serving garbage food isn't going to keep people coming back. --------- The food is better than most Chinese places around here. I have had the General Tso's and Sesame Chicken, both are very good and with a good share of vegetables. The price is about $9 per serving. I just have a couple issues. One is, and BEWARE, they consider a combination as a plate having "extra rice". If you want a spring roll, you have to ask for it. I'm guessing a lump of extra rice is much cheaper than a spring roll. So I feel this is kind of a scam. I've never been to a Chinese restaurant where a combination didn't mean "with spring/egg roll". The other is minor and typical of other Chinese restaurants; learn some customer service. When I call in, finish the call with "it will be $9.75 and ready in 15 minutes". Don't say "ok" then hang up. You sound like you don't need any business and it makes me wonder if you actually have my order.

Would give 3.5 if possible. This is Chinese American cuisine, not strictly speaking Chinese. It is what it is they aren't claiming that you are stepping into a Chinese experience. I'm not going to review it by comparing it to a different cuisine. It's tasty and CONSISTENT. Consistency is important to me. When I know that I can order something and know exactly what I'm getting it makes those "tough decision/too tired" nights MUCH easier. I've eaten at Kam's since 1998 and have tried a lot of the menu. It tastes the same as it has since the beginning. All of it has been fresh tasting, good decent proteins - chicken and beef are nice and tender so you know its good quality. Veg are fresh, have good color and are quite tasty. As an aside, absolute favorite is the Crab Rangoon - they do a great job with it for sure! Is it a great value? Unfortunately no, but its okay. A few of the reviewers have said that it's bland, and I have to agree. I get the impression that perhaps thats what people used to really want. Over the last 20 years Kam's has been open some tastes have changed quite a bit. We do season it additionally at home - a little red pepper flake, garlic, pepper, a dash of I would love to see some dumplings such as Guotie (pot stickers) or dare I say spare-ribs? - something simple and really especially Chinese. While I won't review the food based on the fact that they don't accept credit/debit cards I will give my humble opinion: Okay this really bugs me. The resturants which don't accept credit cards are being very short sighted. We all know that 2.9%, or so, is pretty much the highest fee charged per transaction. This is a pretty busy little place, they may even qualify for a lower percentage. So come on, enough is enough, either your in the service business or not? Maybe they could do a survey and find out how many people would come in MORE if they didn't have to stop at a friggin' ATM first! Give them a try if your in the neighborhood.

I feel the need to warn people away. The food is bland, expensive and definitely cooked in shortening. How would one know? In a cool room, the oil thickened and became grainy on the plate and on the food as we ate. No one goes for Chinese take-out for their health, but cooking with shortening is just unacceptable. We ordered three large portions of Szechuan dishes with different proteins, extra spicy. They consisted mostly of onions and bell peppers, with a few shreds of carrot, some msg and a little white pepper. It was real bad, and at about $10 for each dish, we were definitely irked. The spring rolls were ok, certainly not worth an additional $2. The rather curt lady at the counter eventually softened to being merely disinterested in telling us about the menu. She was perfectly friendly to the regulars who came in to pick up orders while we waited for ours. So unless you're already on the list of regulars who don't get yelled at or whatever, you may want to find a different place that'll overcharge you for Crisco, onions and rice.

No me gusta. I ordered the egg drop soup, General Tso's Chicken and Kam's Lo Mein. Let's start with the soup. I love egg drop soup and order it every time I get Chinese food. This soup was extra thick and tasteless. Moving on to the Kam's Lo Mein. I couldn't even allow myself to try the chicken for it looked still alive. I will say the noodles were good but that's about it. Lastly, the General Tso's Chicken. The chicken fried rice was even more tasteless than my egg drop soup. It was also hard and clumpy. There was nothing wrong with the General Tso's chicken however it was very sweet and not spicy at all (and I am one who is such a wimp when it comes to spice levels). Needless to say I would not come back :(

Unfortunately, the food went right into the garbage can! no joke. and to top off the lost $20, I have a hangry girlfriend to deal with! My meal the general tsao's is ok. no complaints there. unfortunately my girlfriend is a vegetarian and ordered a tofu dish. The tofu has some weird slime on it, is barely cooked enough to hold shape with more of a consistency of oysters than a tasty morsel of fried tofu like we were hoping for. Seriously, this stuff looks like slimer from ghostbusters had his stubby little paws in it! Help! does anyone know of good chinese food in southeast michigan? I'm striking out. however, Chicago has some killer spots! Next time, I'm going to brave the headache and wait and go to tongue thai'd, and pretend I never wanted chinese food.

I don't miss a lot about living in Berkley but Sesame Chicken from Kam's in one of them. The only thing keeping it from getting 5 stars is that (as with a lot of Chinese take out places) ordering is always an adventure. I think they only messed up my order a few times in 5-6 years but I just keep repeating what I wanted and hope for the best when I arrive.

It's cheap. And it's near my house. Those are the nice things I can think of to say about Kam's. Everything else...yuck. The spring rolls are especially abysmal; tiny and disgusting.

We are new to the area. This was the worst Chinese food I've had. Just as others said, it went straight to the trash. It was really expensive too. Shame on them for serving such a poor product. I would expect more from a restaurant in this area.

So I have to laugh at this place because they have a sign in front of the restaurant stating "Best Chinese food in town." Not that they don't have good food, but they are the only Chinese place in Berkley. I am pretty easy to please when it comes to Chinese food. My husband is tougher to crack though. Kam's was one of our first places on our quest to find good Chinese food in our area. My husband wasn't super impressed so we haven't gone back. I thought it was pretty decent Chinese food, I got the standard sweet & sour chicken. From what I recall the egg rolls weren't fantastic and I think that's how my old man judges a good Chinese place. But all in all, it's a decent place to get some Chinese take out for a reasonable price.

DeeeeeLISH! This is Kam's is one word. If you need an almond boneless chicken fix or a truly fantastic cup of soup, chop suey or chow mein this is the place for you. I have experimented around the menu and have never been disappointed. The owners are a sweet couple and one of them is always there. They are always friendly, they are clean, quick and consistant.....and I LOVE them. Cash only and a small fee for sauce on the side and extra noodles and such, but really, the food is worth it and the fair price of these gigantic meals, really is right.

The sign out front says "Best Chinese Food in Town", and that's probably true, if you're just talking Berkley, and maybe even as far as Oak Park. For my money though, I'll drive to Royal Oak or Ferndale, or maybe even Birmingham, to get some food that's much much better. We've tried a couple items, and were mildly pleased. The Broccoli chicken was fairly bland--bright white chicken with a bright white sauce, and the aforementioned broccoli. Uninspiring. The General Tso's Chicken was better, as was the Pork Lo Mein. Egg drop soup--fair. The ladies behind the counter are quite friendly. Food is ready when they say it's going to be.

Growing up in Berkley, Kam's was my first introduction to chinese food. I will forever compare all other food to Kam's. My favorites on their menu: Sesame Chicken - sweet, with just enough spice, not overly battered Crab Rangoons - classic four-point syle, crispy Beef & Broccoli Shrimp with Lobster Sauce Take out only, but usually very friendly staff.

Good Chinese food is not so easy to find in the metro-Detroit area. I am not claiming that Kam's qualifies as haute-Chinois, like Peking House. But, in my opinion, they have the best veggie fried rice in town. It is full of vegetables, and if you mix in some of their packets of hot sauce, it is just so tasty. As for other items, I have no idea. It is take out only, and cash only, though the price is right. I have had mad Kams cravings for a long time.

Excellent take out establishment in Berkley, Mi. The food quality is not only very high but incredibly consistent visit after visit. I have tried many chinese restaurants in the area and Kams is the best. Highlights include almond chicken, beef and broccoli, crab Rangoon. Cash only, quick pick up times, excellent customer service. I'm in constant search for better chinese food around work area and was pleasantly surprised to find that their food is not only above average but their Won Ton soup is hands down the best for any type of fast takeout chinese.

Kam's is outstanding in every aspect! Great menu, (I love the Curry Shrimp!) reasonable pricing and quick service. I only wish I still lived closer to make it a more regular part of my dinner rotation!

Ordered 3 dishes, 3 soups and 2 orders of spring rolls for the 5 of us. There was enough food for probably 7. Huge portion size on the ABChicken, tender, those that ate that loved it. Chicken Subgum was heavy on the celery, but all the veggies were crisp tender and fresh tasting. General Tso's was the strangest I've had, kinda vinegary...it grew on my though and I really liked it for what it was. The Wonton soup was a favorite and those that ate the egg drop liked that too. Hot and Sour soup was, well, hot and sour. The spring rolls were meh. We have leftovers. Cash only. Very nice owners. I give it a 4 comparing it to other take out chinese places (I have a favorite that it can't come close to, hence the 4) It's probably a 2 1/2 to 3 compared to a good quality sit down restaurant. Overall, everyone was happy and stuffed and for the amount of food we got, it was affordable.
