    We went for a friend's birthday and couldn't have been happier. The staff brought out ice cream and sang to her--then the manager came out and sang her a solo. It was very fun and she was very embarrassed (mission accomplished). The sushi was good, but the star of the night was the steamed edamame. Give it a try!

    sometimes they mess up our order, but ALWAYS they make it better. great sushi and they offer delicious brown and black rice substitutes for white rice. I eat here a few times a week carry out or in the restaurant.

    Love this place. Gf and I always come down when she is in town. Has an authentic sushi bar feel but the prices are quite reasonable. I tend to get the Sushi dinner and that normally fills me up when combined with the miso soup and ginger salad. I think I have been there about 7 times now and the quality and freshness of the fish has been consistent One star taken off because the waiters aren't always the best at listening to your order.

    Miki really let us down. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer and needed a knife and fork to cut it--it was too tough to bite! The teriyaki (chicken) was overcooked and drowning in thick, sugary sauce. And the sushi was mediocre at best. With all of the other fantastic restaurants in the area, don't waste your time and money on this place.

    I came to Miki last night with the family for dinner. Overall our dinner was pretty good, the big gaping hole was on the service side not the food side. We started with some apps, just edamame and shumai. Both delicious, but took forever to come out. Most sushi places the edamame at least come out almost immediately (as soon as they're hot), 10 minutes+ for edamame seemed a bit much to me. But again very delicious. There was then another somewhat long break until we got our sushi. Not sure what the delay in the kitchen is, but it certainly wasn't work load since the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Once we got our food though we dug in like crazy (partyly because we were so hungry from waiting a little longer than expected). All the rolls we got were so good. My absolute fave was the blushing madam. Perfectly crispy and spicy, but not too much. I'll be back but maybe opt for sushi bar next time.

    After reviewing my rating distribution I noticed that I was lacking 3 star reviews. They're just not memorable or fun to write. So after visiting Miki last night, I decided I would fill the gap. It's a math thing. Miki is a very average sushi restaurant, or as Yelp would describe it, it's "A-OK." The quality and freshness or the sushi really varies by day and by type of fish. The rolls are very average. Make sure to ask for extra dressing for your ginger salad because they don't give much on the first go around. If you're looking for that non memorable Tuesday night sushi dinner downtown Ann Arbor with your girlfriend/wife, Miki will fit the bill. Just go ahead and grab an asahi beer and come on down.

    Visited here a week or so ago to check it out since its transition of ownership. Still very good! Wonderful, long selection of specialty rolls and a pretty good selection of Japanese beers and sake. Good service. Relaxing, dimly-lit ambiance (good for dates). Recommended!!

    Best vegetarian rolls in town! I am always impressed by the extensive menu that showcases a lot more than just sushi rolls! Many traditional dishes from many parts of Asia and plenty of hot food options.

    After so many years of wondering what Miki was like, I finally went there on New Year's day because I had a coupon. The good was good, and the service was nice, the atmosphere of the restaurant is nice too. Good for a date. But they don't use avocados in their spicy tuna either, unlike my favorite sushi restaurant on the other side of downtown. I'm glad I went to miki, it's nice.

    I feel like American sushi places go after one of three feels: romantic dinner for a 1980s lawyer, student grab-n-go, or friendly little raw-fish bar. Miki is firmly in the 1980s-lawyer camp. The sushi was mostly fine, but bland --- the unagi didn't have the rich, savory taste I look for, the inari was fine, and the California-plus roll was passable. The Ahi poke was served nicely, but was almost tasteless --- the fish was glittering, translucent, and just felt absent. (Also no rice, which I consider important in a poke). The tamago similarly lacked any real egg flavor. On the other hand, I was definitely put off by the colored-and-flavored flying fish roe (bright red? bright green "wasabi" flavor?), and the spicy salmon skin was far too fishy-tasting, more like a kingfish --- makes me wonder about the freshness of that particular item. Back to our hypothetical lawyer: the lights were low, the booths well-enclosed, and the server friendly but deferential. Certainly beats Yotsuba on that front --- similar approach, better executed. However, I'd much rather be at a friendly little raw-fish place --- the quality here just didn't compare favorably with Sushi Town. If the fish matters more to you than the wall hangings, head over there.

    The sushi is on the pricier end but it surely is delicious. It's probably the best in Ann Arbor. I went with a group of six and we ordered 6 rolls and a lot of sushi. We loved the caterpillar roll, the eskimo roll, and the kiss roll. The dragon roll is an absolute must try!! It has eel and avocado, and it is a perfect combination of sweet and savory. The bento boxes are also quite nice, and they come with tempura. The desserts were okay, not as great as the entrees- would like to try the tempura ice cream next time Go with a group of of people! The servers are wonderful. They let you your time. We stayed around 2 hours, and the servers were very take accommodating. The lighting is a bit too dim for my liking, but the feel is nice and relaxing. The sushi comes on fancy boats as well!

    Best sushi place ever!!! Their prices are very reasonable and you get a free ginger salad and miso soup with your order. They make the best spicy tuna roll (i get the hand roll). The seaweed is nice and crunchy and everything is real fresh. Great Udon as well! If you are in Ann Arbor and like sushi don't miss out on this place!

    Gotta try it!: The food is good and the special rolls look really interesting. Had the salmon teriyaki combo -- loved it, loved the teriyaki sauce, loved the salmon. For those who like sushi but don't really want to eat the rice part (yes, there are people like this out there), there's the French Kiss roll. However, its too creamy for my liking -- couldn't really tell what was in the roll because everything was well blended in the sauce. Service was not great, I was always waiting for my tea to be refilled. But overall, the food and the experience is good. definitely the best Japanese restaurant I've been to in Ann Arbor!

    14.... 14 years... that's how long it took me to return to Miki... not because I had bad experience or because of the food, etc., no nothing like that... I just followed the original owners to their new location and haven't been back.... when the original owners sold the place, the new owner was a Korean and when that owner sold the place, the new owner was Korean.... so based upon all my experiences of Korean owned Japanese restaurants, I'll have to give Mike 3 stars. What brought me back? Restaurant week... Their offering during the week was interesting and wanted to try it. I made it just on time to get a beer in before their happy hour ended... and I went with dinner A while my friend went with dinner B. We also ordered yam yam roll, spicy salmon and spicy tuna rolls with our dinner... Sushi - the rolls were decent... probably about the same level as other sushi places in ann arbor, granted a lot better then some places... but overall, on the same level as other places. Portions - decent for the $28 we paid... for dinner B, the place was an oversized bamboo shallow bowl... the food to dish ratio was too big... they should have used a smaller bowl. Service - decent.... our waiter did his best to check-up us... granted it took some time to get our food... we were there around 6pm and it wasn't too busy... I think they could have done a better job on brining our food out without us waiting long time in between dishes. Overall - not bad... parking is annoying to a degree... park in the lot in front of the restaurant or the parking structure... they will validate your parking though, so make sure you ask for validation, if they don't offer it. On a side note, the interior hasn't changed much.... while I can see some minor changes here and there, the chairs, tables, etc. all look the same. I'll have to go back during non-restaurants week to see how it compares with the offering giving during the restaurant week... so stay tuned... granted it might be a while before I make a return visit... granted, it won't be 14 years :)

    I guess I'm biased cause I'm a Japanese girl from Hawaii. Checked out Miki cause it had great ratings on urbanspoon and whatnot. I should have remembered that we are in the Midwest after all so sushi is not gonna be as good as what I'm used to. it's not bad as far as satisfying an urge goes but I'm not sure if I'd go back otherwise....but remember my idea of good Japanese is super skewed because of my upbringing. I still give it a 3 star.

    So my boyfriend and I had a sushi party. 5 rolls. 2 people. Spider-Man 2. Got a grub hub deal due to laziness. So we didn't really think about what 5 rolls meant. My goodness! And they gave us lots of fried sweet potato garnishes. We got 2 crazy boys, 1 crazy girl, and a eel avocado roll. I had asked to replace avocado for cream cheese because of a minor allergy but I don't think that came through for all the rolls I requested. Sadly I discovered there was something in the spicy tuna roll I was REALLY allergic to, so the avocado was lesser of 2 evils. Delivery was fast, sushi was really good despite my itchy mouth, and I loved their extensive menu. A bit pricy, but a bit tasty :)

    I was here on Friday evening, and was quite surprised they were not packed with customers. They have a drink menu, but it took a long time to get our drinks that we ordered. My friend did not like her Tokyo Tea- but they did replace it for something else which was nice. Soup and salad came free with it- I was surprised that the salad with ginger dressing was a "spring mix" as opposed to normal lettuce like most asian salads. The soup was tasty as well. The tempura appetizer was pretty good- 2 pieces of shrimp and a few vegetables. Our sushi was pretty tasty- a lot better than some sushi you can get in town. Parking is kind of a pain if the lot is full- but it was worth the walk from the parking structure :)

    HOLY LUNCH SPECIAL !! whoa... !! 11.95 for a bento box - this is the bento boxes of bento boxes - a huge piece of teriayki salmon, cucumber avacado rolls, seaweed salad, crab salad, a bunch of lightly battered delicious temperua veggies - like zuc sweet potato brocc squash etc, AND black rice ( which is healthy high in antioxidants ), and 3 pieces of raw fish sushi !! huge helpings of these. i got bimbimp bop !! which is really delicious, and you can tell the "ground beef" just really meat tho - is a real quality. theres a lotta veggies in this bimbimpbop - not too greasy at all, i got siracha in addition bc the chili sauce was not so hot they have crazy rolls - lots of creations and options - BEST SUSHI in town!! by far !! it may be a bit pricier - but it really is THAT MUCH BETTER. street parking, booth seating love it !! green tea is legit, its authentic and pure.

    This is our go-to sushi place in Ann Arbor. Why not more stars? Because I'm from California... and pretty spoiled when it comes to sushi. That being said, the spicy tuna roll at Miki is just as good as any I've had in California. Additionally, their negihama maki is pretty darn tasty, and the service is usually good. I'd stay away from their deep-fried rolls (but that might just be personal choice).

    The sushi here is not as great as Yamato's, but the ambiance + food presentation is what earned this place a 5th star :) Down one street from Main Street, Miki's makes you feel like you're dining in some kind of urban setting. There's a parking lot right in front, so if you get there early enough, you can grab a spot for $0.80 an hour (something you definitely won't be able to do in a real city, but these are the perks of fine dining in Ann Arbor :) Don't forget to try their red bean or green tea ice cream for dessert :)

    After living in San Francisco for the past 3 years I was worried I'd never find decent sushi in Ann Arbor, until I found Miki's. My husband and I had dinner here a few nights ago and it was amazing. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and a "love boat" with an assortment of great pieces of sushi. Everything was fresh and so tasty and reasonable priced. We will definitely be back. Also, if they have fresh wasabi on the menu, Get It, it's amazing.

    Despite the poor rating, I will go back. My next visit will determine if this review was too low or too generous. Right now, the food stopped this from being 1 star. We stopped by early on a Saturday evening on a whim. When we showed up, there was only one table, and nobody waiting. At the front desk was either a manager or an owner. He did not greet us. When I stepped up to ask if he had availability, he literally held up his finger indicating that I should be quiet. Incredibly unprofessional, and a level of rudeness I am not accustomed to in the service industry. He then proceeded to take a phone call for a reservation, then a second phone call for a to-go order, and then entered the to-go order into his POS terminal before even acknowledging me. This was at least 5 minutes. Imagine standing in front of a hostess stand for 5 minutes for someone to even acknowledge your presence. My husband tapped my shoulder and indicated that we should leave, but it became a grudge match. I wanted to force him to acknowledge me. He did finally look up and just said, "2?" No apologies for making us wait, but did seat us in a booth by the sushi bar. Looking through the menu, they had an entire page dedicated to explaining Omakase, and had multiple price points. Wow, I didn't know anyone in Ann Arbor did Omakase, so I instantly forgave the poor service at the beginning. When our waiter came over, I asked him a question about the different price points on the Omakase. He just told me they wouldn't do it. I was curious and asked why not. He said he'd go and ask the chef. He goes behind the sushi bar, they talked for a couple of minutes, pointed to me, then the waiter came back and said once again that they wouldn't do it. No explanation. I was pretty pissed off by the pointing and the whispering, so I asked why not. The waiter explained that it was Saturday and it was too busy for them to do an Omakase menu. I'd be completely fine with that, if 1. there were more than 2 tables in the restaurant, and 2. if there was some indication on the menu that it wasn't available during peak hours. In fairness, by the time we left, the place was packed, but I have a feeling that the real reason I didn't get Omakase was because the chef didn't feel like doing it. We went on and ordered some sushi a la cart. And then began the long night of ordering and the waiter having to go and check if they had anything. They were missing several staples. While it wasn't his fault, it would have been nice if the waiter used this as an opportunity to make some suggestions. But he didn't, instead disappearing for 10-15 minutes at a time to check to see if they whatever I was ordering off the menu. It became increasingly frustrating, so I gave up on ordering anything exotic and just ordered a few pieces of sashimi and a couple of roles. The food was good compared to the other sushi places I've been to in Ann Arbor. Well cut fish, the rice was well seasoned, etc. That alone will make me go back. I do want to have Omakase and see what the chef would prepare. But it is very hard for me to forgive the terrible service I received from the moment I walked in the door up until I paid my bill.

    Well, I screwed up. I broke one of the rules of Japanese restaurants, and one of my own personal rules about great food service; I forgot to bring cash to tip the chef. There is artistry in being a Japanese chef (and a chef in general), and it is always customary to tip the chef if you sit at the sushi bar. So, don't be a dummy like me. Bring a few bucks in cash, regardless of how you're going to pay for the meal. Anyway, lets talk about the place. I don't live in Ann Arbor, and was just visiting for the weekend, so I need to preface this by saying that I know of a *single* good sushi bar in my home area. The rest are either calling fake crab rolls sushi, or trying way too hard to be kitschy and appeal to the alternative or foodie crowd. I didn't get that feeling with Miki as much as I do with the places in my area. It felt more like a place that was tastefully decorated in mixed modern vibe and would be okay to bring a family, or eat solo like I did. Oh, right, the food. Yes, of course it was good! The sushi itself was served at a comfortable temperature. I say this because I've had sushi from other places that seemed either too warm, or too cold. I don't really know the rules on serving raw fish, but I can say that with me personally, there is a temperature range at which the fish tastes best. The Firecrackers appetizer was decent, but i expected it to be spicier. The presentation of the food was exactly what you'd expect from a place that cares about presentation, but doesn't want to be overly pompous about it. And the service? It was good. I think I was greeted, seated and eated in a span of about 20 minutes, give or take, which is exactly what I'd expect. Next time I'm in town, I'll stop in again...and yes chefs, I will certainly remember my cash! You should all know that you were all doing great work anyway!

    I suggest that we don't go to miki restaurant called the order I'm meals wait 35 minutes later they called to tell me room to make gas angry because too far 10 to 15 minutes room is it far they also send 3 times before how don't say much

    Alas, I must now update this review to reflect my last experience, which was really subpar. Do not order delivery from here. (I'm not sure whether this is a thing in MI, I'm newish here, but yes, it is common to get delivery from sushi restaurants in other parts of the country.) The delivery fees are stupid. The prices are, as noted below, ridiculous. I was desperate for sushi so I got some, but my sushi was lukewarm and did not taste very fresh, which felt a little like playing roulette with my stomach for $40. Is this the end of my Miki experiences? Looks like I'll have to leave Ann Arbor to survive.

    I've eaten at this restaurant about four times and I've never been disappointed. Usually I have some sushi and some dinner. This last visit, I found the seaweed to be tough..too tough to eat. I almost choked on it. The food is good though and I do recommend it, just avoid anything with seaweed. Miso soup..omg...it's so yummy. The waiter, as it turned out, was a Chinese math major who couldn't wait to move to California. She was great though and I really do like this place a lot. I'd go back and I do recommend it.

    When sushi calls, we go to Miki just steps off Main St. in the heart of the Deuce. I saw the "Under New Management" sign in the front window as we walked up to the front door on a cold late October Friday night and I suddenly questioned our plan to consume a few rolls at this pillar of Japanese cuisine in A-squared. Once inside, the ambiance of Miki is in a word..."soothing". They had some cool, soft jams going on in the background and the lighting was low, soft and warm. We chose to start with our favorite appetizer - the Veggie Tempura. This one never fails to please with mixed vegetables very lightly battered with a little soy accompaniment to dip into. An exceptional combo with some of Miki's unique French wine blends. The complementary soup and salad with any order are a nice touch. We did the obligatory "MSU Roll" which is full of crab, avaocado and cream cheese, tempura fried and drizzled with a delicious eel sauce. At $ 6.75, you can't beat it with a stick...a chopstick that is. We tried a few other house specialty rolls and went home well satisfied. Despite the new management, Miki continues to be our go-to eatery for Japanese when dining downtown. "Oishii ryori!"

    By far my favorite sushi place in Ann Arbor, and I've tried all of them. The menu has pages and pages of different types of rolls, and the fish tastes so fresh. The cocktails aren't bad either!

    I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time since Yelp reviewers have rated it as one of the best sushi restaurants in town. The decor inside is very nice and comfortable. The menu is a combination of japanese and korean dishes. I opted for the tuna donburi bowl. This was the largest tuna donburi I have ever had, there must have been almost a pound of tuna in it. It was fairly fresh and the rice was well executed with a good firm texture and seasoning that was not overwhelming. Overall, I'd say this is a nice place to have sushi and a safe bet but nothing special.

    I have gone to the majority of sushi restaurants in Ann Arbor and for a nicer night out-- this is by far my favorite. I love going on a slower weekday, when the servers are particularly attentive and the manager is walking around, encouraging you to try new things. I've learned a lot from eating here (which is a bonus!) and tried out a few new types of sushi. It's a little on the pricier side, but for the quality of fish and service, it's well worth it. I generally avoid eating sashimi at "grungy" restaurants, but try to always order their dinner plate because it's beyond delicious. The miso/salad with your meal is awesome, too! Overall, a good bet. Also, they play really good, modern, chill-edm a lot of the time. We were there for a grandma complaining about how annoying it is, at the same time we were complimenting the manager for such a progressive choice.

    Miki's is the closest sushi joint to my house and it's a good thing it's pretty tasty otherwise I'd be seriously sad! The space is fairly large which means it's not hard to get a table at all but parking can be a bitch. There's the paid parking lot right across the street but if it anywhere around dinner time any day of the week you're not going to have much luck. Kind of a pain but I don't really mind parking a few blocks away at the Ashley/First lot and walking over. But if that's an issue for you it's something to consider. The sushi itself is good. They have a TON of different options, both traditional and a bit more creative, and the fish is pretty fresh for being in the midwest! The presentation is the real star here, though. It's quite impressive. They do it up very fancy. I'm always a little sad to dig in and ruin it! I'm blanking on the name of the roll but they have one that's wrapped in mango and I love it. It's a great juxtaposition of savory and sweet. I also like their desserts. Tempura bananas are awesome but the fried ice cream wins my heart. Price points are a little high. It's not SUPER cheap but if I'm eating raw fish I don't think I want it TOO cheap. It's pricier than other sushi joints in town (especially the ones closer to campus) so it's not a place I hit on the regular but if I'm craving a nicer sushi meal I'm happy to take in a meal at Miki's!

    This place is phenomenal! My boyfriend and I literally dine at this restaurant at least once a week. The service is always wonderful and the food beyond delicious. We previously lived in California and have never had better sushi. Also, very reasonably priced! Great date place! Quick service. Never had a complaint

    I think Miki management must have seen the bad reviews on service from the past, because every time I go nowadays, I've received nothing but exceptional, attentive service. Seriously, one time I went and the sushi chefs made a mistake with our order and our waitress apologized twice, the manager spoke with us and apologized profusely and we were also given a free roll. Some of my favorite rolls- Carribean roll, ruby roll, spicy salmon roll, and the tiger roll. They have the ambiance of an upscale restaurant, great service, DELICIOUS rolls and reasonable prices. Miki is definitely my favorite sushi place in Ann Arbor, better than Yotsuba by a long shot!

    I made the mistake of getting a Korean dish in a Japanese restaurant and was sorely disappointed. I had the bulgogi dinner and could hardly force myself to eat it. I picked out some veggies and ate the rice and that's about it. I tried some of my husband's sushi and it was decent and the salad and miso soup were good, so that's what saved this from a 1-star rating.

    I feel like this place has undergone twenty different renovations/changes in management. Right now I think they got it right -- I had a pleasant meal here. Comfy booths. Attentive servers. My dinner was a little expensive, but overall I'd say it was probably worth the price.

    I went in last night. After a very long wait for our food and a heartfelt apology from our server (who was great), I had the "Stir-fried chicken and vegetables with spicy sauce and rice." I was expecting something like Dak Galbi but I wasn't particular about it as I like Korean food. (Yes it says "Japanese Restaurant" but I bet this is a Korean-run restaurant from the Korean dishes on the menu.) I got a gigantic platter heaped with what looked like several pounds of diced chicken breast. It looked like a specially-constructed bodybuilder's protein meal. And all of it was dry and chewy. The sauce was indeed spicy -- I think because of the Gochujang as I expected? But beyond spiciness there was no other flavor. After the long wait for the food I couldn't entertain sending it back and getting something else, but the chicken was inedible! I ended up picking out the zucchini and throwing the rest away. What an unpleasant experience.

    Gross. Rice quality is very important for sushi but this rice was overly wet, sticky, and unseasoned. Rolls were messy and bland. My husbands chicken dish was awful looking and judging by how little of it he ate, not very good. This place is too expensive to be this bad. Portions are huge but I'd rather have less food and better quality.

    We went to Miki with a group of friends on a Sunday night. Though the night started a little slow (two servers had called in), the manager of the restaurant jumped in to help and gave us some of the best customer service I have ever had! The food was fantastic and the presentation was beautiful. The price was appropriate at about $9-13 for the specialty rolls. The portions were generous. One of my friends ordered the "Chef's Surprise" and it was incredible! The ambiance was nice. Though the restaurant was pretty full, it was easy for us to carry on a conversation. The location was great-- right downtown across from a parking lot. I will definitely be coming back. It seems like a great place for a big birthday dinner with friends or for a date-night.

    I think Miki has the freshest fish of all the sushi places around campus. Ajishin and Noble Fish are too far for weekday excursions, but Miki makes me pretty happy in any event. There's been only one time that the uni tasted a little weird; otherwise, Miki deserves a solid 4 stars - taking off a half star for its priciness, and another half because I like my fish at room temperature (it's a tad cold). My favorite fish on nigiri are the saba, sake, uni, and shiro maguro. They make delicious rolls as well, although I've never tried the fried and fancy stuff. I'm a simple girl. :)

    I go to this place more than three times a week for months but I have to say that it upsets me a lot! The owner or manager uncle Lee is sooo stingy that he add less and less miso to soup so it taste different. And crab salad I always had becomes a 8 dollar dish with a pinky finger amount! I give up the place eventually even though their sashimi is great.

    Man, my first visit here was so pleasant that I'm afraid this is the honeymoon period and it won't last. I hope that's not the case. Let me feel right about saying "'til death do us part." I didn't expect much from Miki. My S.O. had worked here about two years ago and I had reports of not-so-awesome fish. But we got a Living Social thingmajig so off we went. The waiter was phenomenal. Never there when you didn't need him and always there when you did. The manager checked in with us as he did with the other tables. Again, not pushy, just attentive and thorough. They seem to really care about revamping their restaurant reputation. The sushi chefs are Japanese and they crank out some mean cuts of fish. Their rolls are also nice and tight - well-seasoned rice. Even on the side of more American, ingredient-heavy rolls, there was a nice balance of flavor. The yellowtail is quite possibly the best I've had in the past, uh, 8 years at least. The tuna was also good. The salmon was fairly average. The interior is spacious and can accomodate all kinds of groups. It can be romantic or casual any way you want to use it. Under new ownership, indeed. This might become a regular dining spot for me. Arigato to you, Miki.

    The sushi here was fairly good. I went here for my anniversary with a girlfriend and ordered a couple appetizers and the smallest sushi boat. Everything in the boat was pretty good and the boat itself looked impressive. The sushi tasted very fresh and there was a large selection on the boat itself.

    Very pleasant experience. Although we arrived late (after 8.30pm - and they roll up the sidewalks in Ann Arbor before 10) we were not rushed at all (party of 6). Service was great, food was very good, and the portions were large. Presentation in "boats" - see my pics, was a nice touch. We had a plethora of sushi selections, seaweed salad, and I hogged the lobster tempura (again see my pic). The lobster was perfect, and the price was good for the quality and portion size - around $21 as I recall. It was a Wednesday night so an added bonus was that wines were half-off. So we enjoyed 3 bottles of an OK Australian Merlot for $12.50 per bottle. A great deall - be back for sure.

    My wife and I walked in on a Friday night at 6 or so, and was chastised for not having reservations. You kidding me? This is Ann Arbor and you are NOT top notch. We got seated in a secluded corner, waited +10 minutes to get acknowledged by the server, and +20 minutes for our drinks to arrive. Luckily, the appetizers and sushi came out promptly, or save for miraculous sushi, this place would have been 1 star. The sushi was OK. I'd rather go eat at the place next to the hardware store for half the price and none of the arrogance.

    Not my favorite sushi place in Ann Arbor--honestly, I wasn't wowed by the sushi and it felt kind of slimy when I was eating it--but the service was fantastic. The prices here are higher than at the other places I frequent, but downtown Ann Arbor is what it is. I would eat here again.

    So Just got back from lunch here and wanted to write my review while it's still fresh in my mind. I went with some girlfriends for our weekly lunch and it's my second sushi restaurant in AA. I had the chirashi bowl and it came with soup and salad. The salad was the standard salad you get at any sushi restaurant. The soup was pretty good too, even though the waiter forgot to bring it out so we got it after he already gave us our meals. (no biggie) Everyone's meal was nicely presented and my bowl was very pretty. Lots of big cuts of fresh looking sushi. A mix of salmon, tuna, white fish, fake crab and some others. Everything tasted very fresh except maybe one or two pieces but I'm very sensitive to fishy smells/taste. (crazy I even eat sushi, right?) Well any FRESH fish shouldn't be fishy! I did however find a bone or something hard in one piece... that's why the one star off. The sushi rice was flavored well and perfect consistency. They did load up on the rice so I hardly made a dent in it but I did finish most of the fish. (It's a lot!) We had a coupon clipper so we got $10 off $50 which was nice. The prices for lunch are what you would normally see for dinner so not really that much cheaper for lunch. The service was great and it wasn't too crowded or noisy so I would def come back again. Winning! ps. Don't sit by the door on a cold day... Brrrr

    I got the flaming hawaiian volcano roll and it was a great presentation (ON FIRE!!) and the sushi was good too but the soup and salad and overall experience was better than avg but not particularly note-worthy.

    So sad that this place has gone downhill in their food. This was my childhood sushi place for like, 20 years. I dragged my husband here for our one year anniversary, expecting the same delicious sushi I am accustomed to, but boy was I wrong. The sushi was awful; the rolls were chewy and yucky and the sushi did not taste fresh. I had to force myself to eat it. So disappointed. My family and I have been going here for years and I guess I will have to find a new sushi spot next time I come visit my parents in Ann Arbor.

    This place has been consistent with their food quality and service even with new management. I don't know what the other person talking out having less miso soup lately. Uncle Lee actually is very generous those type of stuff. Rolls are always filled with good food inside. Our family's favorite for sure.

    Anytime I think about how far Michigan is from the ocean, I get a little wary of how fresh sushi might be. I know, I know - the miracles of modern transport. It's psychological maybe. However, I found the sushi at Miki to be great. I came here for lunch. The pricing is similar to their dinner menu, but you get soup and salad. Honestly, one big roll (plus the soup and salad) was a perfect sized lunch for under $10.00. Out waiter was fantastic - super patient with our big group not being ready to order, and then trying to use a coupon. This place is big, and you should have no trouble getting seated. But if you sit by the door, keep your jacket. It gets chilly!

    I'm going to be blunt. I grew up on a coast, and I have a discerning palate for fish. Miki's sushi may be among the best in Ann Arbor, but it ain't all that fresh either. The sushi here, honestly, is FINE--it's not going to harm you and some of the rolls have good flavor. But if you're accustomed to really fresh fish, you will notice that you're in the heartland when you bite into this sushi. I find myself shying away from trying the sashimi. The last time I was here, my bento box included (cooked) salmon that was actually poor quality--I couldn't finish it. On the plus side, Miki has really excellent weekday lunch specials that boast enormous amounts of food for around $10. I like their miso soup a lot, and they have lots of tasty noodle dishes. Service tends to be good, and they're very accommodating of large lunchtime groups, including splitting checks. The vegetarians in our group find lots of options at Miki, too. If you want to try Miki, head over at lunch and get one of the specials, especially if it focuses on a food other than sushi.

    Nice atmosphere and our waitress was really nice and knowledgable. The Bento Beef Teriyaki Box was decent proportion except the piece of beef used could have been fresher and cooked thoroughly. The buffalo wings aren't really traditional wings but boneless popcorn chicken bites with sweet and sour sauce. My wife got the sushi box and she said her pieces of tuna did not seem fresh. Overall after hearing people rave about this spot I was disappointed but I did like the atmosphere. I felt it could have used fresher meat and fish but maybe it was because we went on a Sunday night.

    I love going here for lunch. They have great lunch specials, and large delicious slabs of fresh sashimi. For a Japanese restaurant, in downtown A2, I think their prices are reasonable, the quality of their food is excellent, and the service is great! The atmosphere balances out in a "business casual" kind of way. It's not the most authentic Japanese restaurant, but only because Miki does well in catering to the clientele. There's a mix of authentic Japanese cuisine with a selection of familiar Americanized items like the California roll.

    I recently went to Miki with my Boyfriend and another friend of mine. If was a wonderful meal and the Pistons roll, as well as the Michigan roll are my new favorites. It is a little pricey but the free salad and miso soup makes up for that. The lighting is also a bit dim. Presentation is beautiful and our server was very attentive.

    The Las Vegas roll is, hands down, the most pleasing gustatory experience possibly anywhere, anytime. I havent been everywhere but it is hard to imagine enjoying anything more than this cheesy, gooey, crunchy roll of deepfried perfection. Las Vegas roll I miss you! Also: extra points for quircky servers, extra strong drinks even when not requested ("Yeah it's strong; it's half vodka and half sake."), and comfortable if perfectly generic ambiance.

    My co-worker and I just ordered carry out from here. While my sushi-lunch special is delicious, I was surprised to see the salad and miso soup that was promised was not in our bag. Thinking this was just a mistake, my co-worker called and was told that soup and salad isn't included in the carry-out. Then I called and the gentleman who answered stated that this has been the practice for a year or so. I said, that's fine, but somewhere on your website you need to state this. I also wondered if the price was the same- it was still $11.99. I stated that I didn't think was fair and that I planned to write my displeasure on to Yelp. The man stated he was sorry and said that the manager doesn't want to include the soup and salad unless you are in the restaurant tipping them. I said it doesn't really matter to me the reason- it should just state this on the website because I was expecting- and looking forward to- miso soup and yummy ginger carrot salad! He did not offer any help.

    The first time I ate at the Miki, I about fell over from the price of the food. This was back in 1995, and I had picked up my friend Susan, who was a grad student at the University of Michigan. She had car trouble up in Milford, and was stranded there is a auto repair place. Susan's car died on her, and since she was from Taiwan the crooks at the garage took full advantage of that fact, especially since English was not her first language. Nonetheless, for going up to Milford and picking her up, she wanted to treat me to dinner, and we decided on the Miki in downtown Ann Arbor. This was mostly since all of her friends had told her about the place and how good the sushi was. I had heard a lot about this place myself, since it was the only Japanese restaurant in town back in the 1990s. Several of my Japanese friends and students told me that Akisan was a master sushi chef, and was by far the best in the area. So when I got there, I was looking forward to trying their food. When I arrived there, the atmosphere inside really didn't do much for me. I expected a more traditional setting, but found it more Americanized than I hoped for. Moreover, I was not impressed with the bathroom as it was rather untidy, and could have been cleaned up much better than it was. Likewise, the smell inside was enough to knock a skunk out. Finally, we got down to ordering dinner, and I selected the following: 1 California Roll 1 Spicy Crab Roll 2 Skewers of Yakitory 1 Bowl of Miso Soup 1 order of Seafood Tempura as the main course. My friend Susan ordered: 1 Spicy Crab Roll 1 Skewer of Yakitory 1 Bowl of Miso Soup 1 Large bowl of Salmon with Spring Onion Noodles. The waitress we had seemed to stop by less often than we liked. In fact, I saw Elvis walk past our table more times than I did the waitress, only because there was an Elvis impersonator contest going on in town. However, she did bring us our bill and I about fainted. All of the above food came to $190.00! This also included a 20 percent tip they added on. I felt so bad for Susan, who was in a state of shock after having the waitress check the bill over again, that I offered to pay for the meal. However, she wouldn't hear of it, since I had come to her rescue. Nevertheless, I treated her to dinner at Wah Court over in Windsor, Ontario before she went home after graduating. The second time I went to the Miki, the quality of the sushi has dropped since Akisan has retired. Thankfully, the price of the food has also come down as well. With that said, if you like middle-of-the-road sushi, then this is the place to dine at.

    We used a Living Social coupon here last night (Friday). Arrived around 5:45 pm, so it was not busy at all. Our food came so quickly, I was very happy (we have a 2 yr old). My husband had the chirashi, and it was chock full of huge slices of fresh fish. I was so jealous (I am pregnant). This is my post partum dinner request!! He said it's the best chirashi he's ever had (and he has had a lot). My son had the kid's bulgogi meal and he loved it. I had three rolls, two were tempura. They were good. They have TONS of interesting rolls, but I was limited b/c I cannot eat raw fish right now. I was pleasantly surprised that my rolls came with soup and salad. Servers were very attentive. We had lunch here not long ago and it was also delicious.

    Miki was bought out about one year ago (Spring 2011) by the owners of Sushi Zen in Brighton. I must say that all of the great things about Sushi Zen have come through at Miki. It's not like some of the pretentious uber-preppy sushi places in A2, this is a down to earth, reasonable priced gem of a Sushi restaurant. Bring all of your friends because this place is AWESOME!!

    As fans of Sushi Zen in Brighton, my best friends and I decided to give Miki a try, as we were going to be in Ann Arbor for the evening. We were a little wary after reading some reviews about the service, but we were absolutely pleasantly surprised. We were seated immediately, and our server was very efficient and friendly. When he found out one of us was vegan, he went out of his way to make sure we knew exactly what had animal products in it. The food was absolutely delicious, and the prices are fairly decent. I loved the atmosphere as well. It's a good place to go on a date or just a nice get together with friends. All in all, I absolutely recommend checking it out.

    I came here for my fifteenth month anniversary with my gf. Having lived in a college town for a few years, my expectations ha greatly diminished. So when I ran into Miki, I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is nice, the price was reasonable, and the fish was fresh. Most importantly, it kept my girlfriend happy!!! Highly recommended :P

    Just not sure I get the hype on this place. Went for the lunch crowd, and though it's good prices, it definitely was not my fave. The only saving grace was the service, which was awesome. Completely pleasant and helpful. This sushi kinda reminded me of a time I tried to make my own. Needless to say, I go out now. :) My spicy salmon wasn't too spicy, and my tuna avocado roll was a little soggy and sticky.... (I know, it's sushi, but ....) I doubt I'll go back, I have other places to head to that are better.

    Craving sushi, I came here and ordered the tuna, salmon, and unagi. I also ordered the yakisoba. The yakisoba was inedible. Overpowered by what seemed like tarragon? I'm not quite sure. The sauce was thick and unappetizing. I was terrified of my soon-to-come sushi order. The miso soup didn't help my expectations either, it was almost flavorless. After waiting an extremely long time, the sushi came. The presentation of the sushi was nice (though like another reviewer said, the plate was strangely large), The slices were so big, even for "American" slices, that I had to eat it in two to three bites. I was expecting it not to taste good based on the food I'd just had, but I was actually impressed. The fish were fresh and delicious. Might be worth it to pay extra for the 'real' wasabi. This place only gets two stars because the wait for the sushi was annoyingly long. And when I told the manager the yakisoba wasn't very good at all (though I praised the sushi), all she did was say, "Aww." Not only did she not ask if I would like something else, she didn't even apologize. Even this place is just a couple blocks from where I live, I won't frequent it much because of this experience. It's slightly pricier sushi and for that price I expect more consistency in quality, and definitely better service.

    Weh-weh! If you want Vegas-style sushi with a whole lot of flair with not much flavor, Miki is your place. The sushi plate featured a giant orange peel Pom-Pom and a miniature strobe light, but the sushi itself was majorly UNDERwhelming. The entree was fine at best, but served on an obscenely large plater. The whole thing felt like a bad episode of top chef rejects. Nothing authentic here, so you might as well go somewhere else that cost less. If you're here for the cocktails, then good for you, but then why call it a restaurant and not a mediocre nouveau riche cocktail bar?

    Miki is one of my favorite sushi places in Ann Arbor. Both times I have gone were on a Thursday which is lady's night and includes three drink specials. The sushi is fresh and they have a wide selection. I like to stick with simple/plain rolls but if you like tempura, cream cheese, sauce or etc this place is for you. Service has always been super friendly and helpful. Def one of my go to sushi places!

    Miki's is definitely my favorite sushi restaurant in south east Detroit. The sashimi is very good and there are multiple choices of rolls. My all time favorite is the Salmon on the Beach roll. It's a California roll with baked salmon on top and a sweet sauce. Absolutely amazing! Sometimes my wife and I order two of them :) Just a note, management has recently changed but we did not notice any change in service quality.

    Our first trip to Miki was a memorable experience. Clean tastes, fine presentation, elegant surroundings and non-invasive waitstaff. We ordered 4 items but the Yellowtail sashimi and the Firecracker Roll were the best out of the 4. The prices are what you see in most Japanese restaurants here in A2. If I have any complaint it's that the waitstaff could be a bit more attentive - it was not very busy when we were there. However, they were very pleasant and warm in nature. We will be back for sure.

    The NEW Miki was definitely worth a try. As a few people mentioned in previous posts, Miki is under new management, so they do still have some kinks to work out, but I think they are well on there way to being a great restaurant. I thought the restaurant's atmosphere was very nice and romantic. It was a little too dark for my tastes and half way through the meal they made it even darker. I guess it's good for people who want a more intimate setting or someone who wants to feel like they are in a really, trendy place, but I prefer being able to see the beautifully presented food in front of me. Speaking of beautifully presented food, the Miki sushi chefs do a great job of serving the sushi in creative and beautiful ways. The sushi was very good and there were a lot of different special sushi rolls to pick from. Yes, there were a lot of specialty rolls, but the simpler rolls and sashimi to order. Some were simple, but something I had never seen before. One thing that I didn't like was the plates they use are way too big, so it is hard to fit everything on the table. The restaurant was not busy so we spread out across three tables, but we could not have done this on a busier night. I actually decided to get the steamed vegetable udon soup. I liked it, but the description in the menu made it seem like there would be more vegetables. I even had to ask the waiter to add tofu. Although I enjoyed the soup, I felt like it was just a big bowl of miso with noodles. We also ordered the dynamite appetizer. We knew that it would take a while so we ordered it at the very beginning before we ordered anything else. We did not get the appetizer until the rest of the food came out, which was unfortunate. The appetizer was spectacular, but not for someone who wants something lighter. The dynamite app is very rich and heavy. We all felt the server was really good and very nice. He lacked some knowledge about the food and all the ingredients, but he was not afraid to ask and made sure he got the answers if he did not know. The manager also came around a few times to make sure we were enjoying our meals and everything was okay. Another thing she mentioned was that they are constantly reviewing their reviews on Yelp and taking the comments to heart. If you go to Miki, provide some constructive feedback and they'll listen. One more thing, the bathrooms were really clean and the women's room had feminine products for free. This is very nice because if you've ever been in a situation where you really need something, but you forgot an extra, having them available in a restaurant bathroom is incredibly helpful!

    I had the absolute worst service at Miki that I've had anywhere in years. We did not have to wait for a table, but we waited about 20 minutes for a menu and some water. Once we ordered, it took a full hour to get our food, which was just 3 or 4 sushi rolls. We were not offered a complimentary drink, a reduction in the bill, or even a simple apology. Our food was decent and they seemed to have some interesting sounding rolls, but the service was so bad I won't be going back to try them. They are near the bottom of my list of A2 sushi places just above the place in the mall. I'd recommend Godaiko, Yotsuba, and Melange for quality A2 sushi. The places on South University are still decent and less expensive. Ichiban was fine too. Avoid Miki/Sushi Zen.

    I must say that I was very suprised with Miki. I didn't really have high expectations of it, but it really impressed me. First impressions are everything, and Miki did a great job not only with its first impression, but also throughout the whole meal. When we first walked in we were greated by an very very very happy Asian man who directed us to our seats. He had such a huge smile on his face, and spoke in a voice similar to what you would sound like if you won the lottery, that my SO and I couldn't help but look at each other and laugh. I found it rather entertaining and charming opposed to annoying. They have booths and tables, but we were seated in a booth, which was in a circular shape, and was quite nice for our date; it would also be nice for a small group of friends. We were greeted by our server with hot towls, a very nice touch which you don't see often, at least in AA. Our server was very nice and bubbly and prompt, which, even with my high expectations of service, made it even that much better of a dining experience. The sushi was pretty good also. Although I've gotten larger portions from other places for the money, the sushi was quite tasty. I can't remember exactly what we ordered, which isn't a slam on the fantasticness (yes I just made that up) of the meal, rather a slam on my horrible memory. I do remember though that everything from the soup and salad, to our app, to our sushi, left me smiling and holding my belly when I left. Overall, I will def head back to Miki, and if you haven't been, its definitely worth a try!

    Good prices, good rolls. The service was outstanding. I thought our waiter was amazing. He was super friendly and totally attentive. We started our meal with edemame, which is always good.The rolls were very well prepared and very attractive; they were put on the plate very nicely. The restaurant was nicely decorated and very cozy. Why not four or five stars? Coast Sushi in Chicago still trumps all sushi restaurants that have ever been. I don't think I can go beyond A-OK.

    we went here on my birthday and it is fantastic! The service they provide is warm! and the food is sooooooooooo great! I have tried most of the Japanese restaurant in AA, including Ayaka and Sadako on the S. State. I have to say that Miki is rank the first! (followed by ayaka and then sadako) I was offered a dessert for the b-day and it really surprised me! They even put a candle on it! I guess this is my favorite japanese restaurant in AA! definitely worth a try!

    We were very impressed with Miki, the interior decor was not at all what we expected from outside - very relaxed, yet refined. We ordered one sushi roll - the ruby - which was very nicely executed. I was thrilled that they have a variety of Michigan beers on tap and bottled, a definite plus! We ordered the Shabu Shabu, which we felt was very reasonably priced, and then we saw all the food that came with it and felt that it was a great bargain. The meat and veggies were all fresh and delicious, and the miso soup and salad that came with it were absolutely the best we've had in any of Ann Arbor's many Japanese restaurants. Definitely give Miki a shot, and they validate parking for the lot across the street.

    I really love Japanese food. In fact, I have been to Japan over 100 times. It's hard to believe, I know, but early in my career, I had responsibility for several of our main suppliers over there and had to manage day to day issues. product start ups, negotiate deals and the like and sometimes I found myself in Japan over 15 times in a year. So as I not being shy about eating anything and everything, I got to try a lot of authentic Japanese fare and was able to compare different places. So when I go to a US Japanese restaurant, I can be a little picky. I don't enjoy Americanized Japanese food and I don't like stuff that isn't close to authentic. I don't care how cute the decor is, I want good Japanese food. Miki had it's strong and it's weak points. On the positive side, the Sushi and Sashimi were not bad. I have been there a few times and was never served fluorescent died fish for example. And it was always fresh. It wasn't the top quality stuff that I have had at a few of the more elegant sushi-yas, but it was above average. And I would order it again at Miki. I also have tried the Tempura at Miki. That was not so hot. Literally, not so hot.... In Japan, the best way to have Tempura is to sit right at the counter and order a "course." The Tempura chef watches to see when you are finishing up one round so he can properly time the cooking of the next one. When served this way, the hot delicacies are laid out in front of you directly from the hot oil and placed on paper in front of you. The Tempura is light, hot, never greasy and always crispy and fresh. That is the way to eat Tempura. But at Miki, I was served somewhat soggy and limp tepid shrimp that because it was pretty cold, tasted of grease. I cannot recommend that. I also have tried the Nabeyaki Udon at Miki. Now I really like Nabeyaki Udon. For reference, it is supposed to be scorching hot soup served in a cast iron pot. And it should contain at minimum, the broad udon noodles, pieces of chicken, vegetables, a cooked egg, scallions, a slice of fish "doily" and of course really good both. The broth is typically a combination of shoyu and tuna based. Good Nabeyaki Udon has a drizzle of sesame oil on top and is served with Shichi-mi. Shichi-mi is a blend of seven spices that you add to taste and it makes the flavor wonderful. When I had Nabeyaki Udon at Miki, it was not scorching hot. It had lackluster tasting broth that was curiously kind of sweet and it was not served with sesame oil or with Shichi-mi. So I asked for Shichi-mi and the server did not know what I was talking about. I asked him in English. I could have asked him in Japanese, but I didn't. Finally they sent someone else out to help and I was able to describe what I wanted. The brought me a shaker of the stuff, but alas it was pretty flat tasting. It was probably way too old. So scratch the Nabeyaki Udon at Miki too. I guess I have been to Miki four or five times. I go mostly because friends ask to go with me and because they like the place. But given my druthers, I would try another place first. And if I go again, I think I will stick to the sushi and sashimi.

    My husband and I just had a GREAT meal here. Excellent service. Fantastic food. They welcomed us like family. My husband had a variety of dishes including sashimi, a hand roll, the Ruby Roll (awesome), black rice, seaweed salad, and more. The spicy tuna and avocado spring roll appetizer is delicious. I don't care for raw fish, but ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box and it was perfect. They have half-off wine on Wednesdays, which we were happy to take advantage of. As if that wasn't enough, we split a dessert - tempura bananas with chocolate sauce and three flavors of ice cream (the plum wine ice cream is incredible). I would highly recommend this place. We just moved to the area and with so many great restaurants to choose from, I know we made a great choice.

    Love this place! Have yet to find a better sushi restaurant in Ann Arbor. Love the atmosphere and always enjoy the food. I have gone here with my boyfriend, in a small group, and have also had bigger groups here for dinner parties---Always a great experience. There have been a few times I wish the service was better, but overall I can't complain.

    Have you had their shabu shabu? First of all, you are supposed to use meat broth, not vegetable broth, to cook your vegetable and meat. NEGATIVE - the broth was basically regular WATER. That basically ruins the entire premise of a shabu shabu. Also, the vegetable that was served with the shabu shabu was not fresh at all. They looked like they have been refrigerated for a day or two too long. Definitely looked bruised and unhappy. If you don't want to be disappointed, then stay away from Miki's shabu shabu.

    Admittedly, this is was our third choice for a night out. By the time we had traversed the streets of Ann Arbor on the food quest, our appetites had reached the danger zone. As in everything-looks-good-I'll-have-one-of-each zone. With sushi this can be particularly painful. But the bill wasn't. . . in fact, for as many jewels of rice and raw fish we ingested, it was perfectly reasonable. So, I say squash the "overpriced" notions right out of your sweet little academic heads, Ann Arborites. Use your loans and go for it. Sure, the salads were iceberg (can we abolish iceberg? to whom can I address my firmly-worded request?) but the sushi was fresh, flavorful and filling. I love when you order a roll and get 8 pieces. For $5.50. We had all the usual suspects: spicy california, spicy tuna, philadelphia. . . and a sweet concoction made of tempura sweet potato and fried banana. Meh. Just go for ice cream at Kirwin's after and leave the sweets to those who know them best. They let us linger until the kitchen closed, order rolls as we went and just be zen about it until we felt up for the stroll home. Miki made a memory.

    I've been meaning to write a review about Miki for a long time. As in long, I mean since I first joined Yelp and started eating at Miki (circa 1997). Eleven years of eating at a restaurant should make you some sort of expert about the place, but I've found that it actually makes it difficult, given you know a little too much about the people who own it, the background about the place, and the people that run it. However, I'm going to give it my best shot. Food: The sushi there is second to Yotsuba. With that said, it's the best sushi you're going to get in the downtown area including all of the new sushi bars that have pooped up near campus. However, it's also much more expensive than your Sadako, Sushi.com , etc. With that said, the problem is that Miki hasn't recovered from losing their main sushi chef, Akisan. Akisan was a sushi chef with 30+ years experience who had expert hands and a warm heart. My friends and I would sit up at the bar just so we could enjoy his company. From a food perspective, it's never tasted quite as good since he left. Ambiance: Ugh. Miki has struggled in this area for a while. While in the last couple of years, the owner has made a few improvements, the place really just needs a complete makeover. I tend to think of a restaurant's quality by the impression the bathroom gives you, and as far as I know, the can at Miki was absolutely atrocious. Maybe they spruced it up in the last few years, but I haven't gone in there for that long. I usually wait until after dinner at the next place we go to. Service: Usually good. There are a few in the wait staff that have literally worked there for close to a decade. Those people are usually on their game. You'll get your occasional flake, but hey, this is an Asian restaurant. Inconsistent service is part of the game. As far as what to get there, I'm going to provide my list of favorite pieces at Miki: Sashimi: yellow tail, salmon drizzled in ponzu, sweet (raw) shrimp (comes with a tempura-battered shrimp head..delicious), fatty tuna Pieces: Spicy scallop, bbq eel Rolls: Spicy tuna

    Very overpriced yes and mediocre. $53 for lunch for two?? 3 rolls and a lunch special? Wow! As usual the rolls are WAY too big for one mouth. Fairly decent concepts (Spider Roll, French Kiss) but Tortorro still rules for Ann Arbor (so far). They are the only ones who make special rolls sized for the human mouth.

    Went here for the first time with a friend as a stumble upon/not planned type deal. A weekday night, had almost the entire place to ourselves. Ordered a boatload of various rolls, and nigiri. Everything was excellent. However, the Unagi in particular was outstanding. If you like eel, Miki has the best eel we've ever had. Will definitely be back.

    I hadn't been to Miki in about 6 months until very recently (wasn't thrilled last time) but some friends had been raving so I decided another visit was in order. What we got (sorry about my spelling in advance): - Nabeyaki Udon - California Roll - Fatty Tuna sashimi - Niku-titaki - Veggie Tempura - assorted nigiri (saba, tobiko, tuna) - Goma ai Pork Ramen - Hot-Hot roll (salmon, tuna, cream cheese, eel sauce, few other odds and ends, covered with crunch tempura batter on the outside) Verdict: Rolls were quite good, very fresh fish - good texture/flavor to the rice. Nigiri was also very fresh and well-prepared. I usually don't like any dairy mixed in with my sushi, but the Hot-Hot roll was pretty darn good. The Nabayaki Udon was very pretty but was completely lacking in flavor -- broth was too sweet for me, reminded me of sukiyaki stocks that I have tasted at other restaurants, but it may agree more with someone else. I didn't like the noodles either - had a strange, "asian grocery packaged noodle" taste that was quite chemical in nature. Ramen noodles were much better, had the miso stock instead of the soy stock and it wasn't too sweet. I didn't care for any of the appetizers, were expensive and bland. My husband hated the Niku-tataki and he usually loves it (tasteless and flabby in texture...had some fat which had an off taste as well.) Service was wonderful, but overall quite expensive. If you want rolls/nigiri Miki is good. Want cooked dishes? Go elsewhere.

    GENERAL: For sushi in the Ann Arbor area, they are #1. I come from Rhode Island, so I am used to the best fresh fish, and I am very, very picky. Being in Michigan is often difficult in getting fish to taste great. WHAT GOOD THEY HAVE: I highly recommend the "Hot and Hot" rolls- omg, to die for. Yum. I love all the textures they put together, crunchy, soft, etc., and they tend to mix a lot of sweet and hot types of flavorings in their selections. Flair is the game here, so if you want very traditional stuff, you'll get some, but not a lot. They also remodeled last year and it looks nice in there now. I always loved the booths that remind me of rat-pack style Vegas seating. Uhm...but don't worry the decor is Asian, not Vegas. THE FEW CONS: Only one room for a party of maybe 10 at most. I believe you have to reserve it in advance, of course. They are pricier than other places (but well worth it.) Too many cream cheese based options. They need to have one option with cream cheese, as I don't like cream cheese on my sushi. It seems too American to me. yuck. OVERALL: Yum. yum, yum. Go now!

    I have been here a couple of times with my boyfriend during the school year. I remember that we ordered a special roll, which was delicious (I regrettably don't remember the name!), also, we ordered Bi Bim Bap, which we found pretty good. The crab salad was.......... Barely any crab at all, however. The service was lacking, too, unfortunately.... And I know this for sure because I myself work at a Japanese restaurant... I can tell who's working hard and who isn't and sometimes the reason. The pricing was recognizable--to milk cash from college students... very typical in this part of town. It is business, after all. Over all, this place just hit a bit higher than the typical, generic Japanese restaurant, but no sparks here.

    October 20, 2011 a spur of the moment decision lead us down to Miki's on First Street -A2, now called Miki Sushi Zen. The new management has been in place for about 6 months and has developed a keen eye toward the guests and their satisfaction. Daniel the host worked the floor like a pro and stopped to insure we were enjoying the experience. Meghan our server could not have done a better job even as the tables were beginning to fill she never lost sight of her customers and the timing. Lynn had the Chicken Bento dinner which was loaded with chicken, shrimp and a couple dumplings. All cooked perfect, although the dumplings were not as "off the stove hot" as they should have been everything was seasoned wonderful and very tasty. The compartments with-in the box were a work of art, with food arrangements as attractive as they were good. I on the other hand cannot go to a Sushi joint without that being what I get so settled in on the Sushi/Sashimi Bento. This also was a work of beauty, more so then any of the other sushi places in the area I have been to. A very generous plating of three sushi over rice, a roll cut into I believe 6 pieces sprinkled with eel sauce, three handsome pieces of four type sashimi and a seaweed salad. The freshness could be seen and tasted immediately as one of the chefs' top selection criteria - no surprise he is a skilled artist. For desert we had the "Kitty Kat" which is tempura fried apples and bananas covered with whipped cream and laced with a caramel - very good and a totally different experience in desert samplings. By the way both our plates came with the traditional soup and salad and the Sapporo beer isn't bad either. We will go back probably sooner than later and will expect, as this trip, not to leave hungry and at a fair price. Jack and Lynn

    Good but not great. If you have eaten sushi on the coast or in Hawaii recently, better postpone your visit here until you forget what you had there. But if you've been stuck in the midwest for months, you could really enjoy it. Life is tough, and we're a long way from the ocean. Added: we had nice sushi at the sushi bar recently -- Oct. 07

    We came for lunch on a Saturday the place was not busy but the service was very slow, there was just one server and she was doing everything. Food was good but the sushi was cut far too large and there was way too much wasabi on each piece. We are not from Ann Arbor, be we stop in town often. We love the restaurants in Ann arbor - that's why we stop. This one is ok and I mean just ok. We have eaten sushi around the world and have eaten the full spectrum, from gross (London) to the best (Seoul yes Seoul was better Tokyo and Hiroshima hands down). For the price I'm sure we can find a better place in town.

    Miki is very good for sushi in the midwest. I went with a friend of mine who lived in Japan for a year, and he said that their soba noodles were actually authentic, which doesn't happen often in Michigan. Their eel is consistently good. The prices aren't bad either - never been for lunch, but I noticed that they have some really great lunch specials. I'd definitely recommend Miki if you're looking for a step up from the campus-area japanese restaurants/sushi places.

    Miki is delicious but generally a little rich for my blood. I go here maybe once a month for sushi because it's a little pricey for my weekly sushi needs. I recommend the spicy tuna don and the agedashi tofu, both of which are delicious and have have good portion sizes. The atmosphere is a little more formal than, for instance Sushi dot Come or Totoro, but casual dress is typical. I like that they give you hot towels to wash your hands before your meal, a tradition that is typically omitted in sushi joints around Ann Arbor.

    My favorite place, hands down. I have been to every single sushi place in Ann Arbor, and I don't care what anyone says, this place is the best. Their rolls are big, and tightly rolled (ie: no falling apart and no loose rice), and their presentation is pretty good. I have only had bad service one time in the last 5 yrs; usually it is pretty good. Their sushi chefs are very well trained and know what they are doing, for sure. And their prices are excellent for what you get-- especially considering it is a relatively nice sit down restaurant. Sit at the bar-- they have huge plasmas and we have watched many sports games while eating there...

    So my husband and I went here yesterday for dinner. Overall, I have to say it was alright. I ordered sushi (Tempura California rolls, spicy tuna and a few nguri) it was fresh tasting, and I have no complaints. My husband ordered the Tempura Soba, which was a little more broth and a little less noodles than I've seen it made other places, but otherwise not bad. We also got Miso soup, which was exactly like every other cup of Miso soup made in Ann Arbor. My overall impresson? Just not impressed. K & C Sushiya is somewhat better, and also cheaper. I probably would have given 4 stars, but our waitress wasn't great. We sat for 45 minutes after she had cleared the table before we were succcessful in flagging her down to get our bill. When she did finally bring it, she brought the wrong bill, and it was another 10 minutes before she returned to the table so we could tell her. She was very apologetic and seemed very sweet, if perpetually confused. Overall this isn't a terrible place, but they do expect you to part with a little more money than the food is actually worth.

    I have eaten here several times and I have found the food to be flavorfull and the sushi very fresh. The waitstaff are the nicest people, and you never find yourself sitting and wondering where they went. My seaweed salad was not as good as I'm used to, but my rolls were great. I will eat here again I'm sure. The atmosphere is cozy and calm except when there are a bunch of screaming students at the large table in the front.

    Miki Japanese restaurant is fairly overpriced for mediocre sushi. The rolls are like any other generic Japanese restaurant rolls. If I taste-tested sushi with my eyes closed, Miki sushi would not stand out from the rest. After months of Japanese food drought, I gave in. And like any other Ann Arbor person, I was disillusioned into thinking that this is the best Japanese restaurant in the college town.

    Miki oh Miki, I miss you...and by the way- how do you stay in business now that I've left town? Anyway- you would think there would be amazing sushi all over the LA area and for cheap right? Wrong! I've hit every top rated by the general public great sushi place out here and am pissed about all that lost money! But I was NEVER pissed about any amount of money I spent at Miki, now was I? NO REGRETS EVER. Once, when I was incredibly depressed and lost and barely hanging on because I was working in a ghetto hell hole school in Detroit that made me cry every monring on the way to work- I would just come to Miki three nights a week and order up for me and any friends I could get to come by in waves- I figured if I spent every penny I earned on incredible food to store me up- and keep me from quitting that job till I could find something better- then I was breaking even, and actually therefore WINNING. It worked! I made it out of that nightmare....downside: I also am far away from my career saver- dream eatery Miki's.
