Took my Daughter here for a late lunch on her Birthday. We chose this due to it's proximity to Guitar Center where she got her new ukulele (SP?). The food was actually pretty good here. We started out with an app of firesticks, which were very tasty and slightly spicy. I ordered the Lasagna, which I almost never order in a restaurant because it's usually disappointing. This was actually quite good too, and well portioned. My Daughter ordered the grilled chicken salad, and it looked exactly like a grilled chicken salad (go figure). The bread was OK, but not necessarily fresh. The service was good, and everyone was very cheerful. All in all if I was in the area, I'd certainly consider stopping back in. Overall they got 3 stars because it's a bit pricey, and it is after all a chain.

We waited 6 months to return here hoping thing would have changed but they haven't. The food is good but the service is still horrible!!!!! We ordered the all you can eat salad with entree, just like we did last time and once again by the time we received our second salad our meal came out! So, once again we feel rushed to eat the salad so our meal doesn't get cold .I don't get why it take 5 minutes to get refills on salad, drinks, and get a to go box. Is it all hiding in the back?!?! Very disappointed we won't go out of our way to go back !

First, I want my $48.00 back. Second, Johnny should be ashamed of himself. We ordered a shrimp pasta dish "made for two". I had the soup which was TERRIBLE and my fiance had the salad...it was a basic salad so it was ok. Let's get back to this "made for two" hogwash. HOW IN THE WORLD is a shrimp pasta dish made for two when you're only giving us 6 pieces of shrimp in a huge bowl?!?!?!? It wasn't even tasty at all. To be honest Johnny Carino's is the exact same as Friday's. This food is not fresh..it can't be it's premade and they probably throw it in a pan to heat it up and they couldn't even get that part right because our food was lukewarm. My drink was crappy as well! Even if it was good I wouldn't step foot in this crappy place again! The prices are a joke as well $48 for this crap I was so upset!! The service was good. That's the only good thing.

Monthly. Wine. Dinners. I urge everybody to a.) Join Carino's mailing list and b.) Attend one of their monthly wine dinners. It's held the last Tuesday of every month at 7 pm by reservation only. It's a decadent, four course meal with wine pairings for each course -- FOR ONLY $29.95 ++ This last one featured 2, count em, TWO wines per course. #WINNING!! It's led by Mike Cain of National Wine & Spirits. He gives a brief intro, then briefly explains each wine and how it pairs with the course, then he lets you have at it. It's really a good time and is a standing date on my calendar.

This is my hangout. I visit quite frequently because its close to my house. The service is what I love because John the bartender has always taken great care of me! The place has so many great deals from half off wine wednesday to the happy hour specials. They do wine events monthly and there a lot of fun. This place makes it affordable to literally eat here everyday. The food is good for being franchised. I have always enjoyed everything that I have ordered. The happy-hour is between 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. which includes half off small bite appetizers that work out to be two dollars per selection. The flat bread pizzas are half off and are five dollars. The drinks are two dollars for house wine and small drafts and some specialty drinks. The best part is that happy-hour starts right back up at 8:00 p.m. until close. Just remember this place is a typical franchised restaurant and has excellent service and good simple italian food. If you looking for place to eat I advise you to stop in and see why people have really enjoyed there experiences at this location. You might even find me at the bar.

Been here twice. Both times the food was horrible. The first time I did a carry out so I gave it another try and dined in, the booths were ripped, the place was messy and the food was just a bad. I will never go there again.

Great food and service! Came on a Wednesday and bottles of wine were half off. Chicken Parm was VERY good, and our waitress (Stephanie) was AWESOME! Cannot complain about anything! Plan on coming back soon!

Chain or not this place at least used to be decent. Visited this weekend, since it is only a few blocks from the house. First bad sign was that the place was only half full at 6 pm on a Friday. Started with a Bruschetta appetizer, that turned out to be the best part of the meal(4 Stars on the app.) I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana that left alot to be desired, I could get this meal at any Rams Horn or Family Diner. The cheese on top looked like a slice of white american. Is it to much to ask from a Italian place to use some real cheese? The wife ordered her usual pasta dish which she has always enjoyed, and her comments were that it just was not as good as it used to be, she felt they maybe went to cheaper ingredients. SInce we did not enjoy the dinner we decided to order the Tiramisi, bad choice since whoever made this batch forgot to soak the Ladyfingers in Expresso. Just dry Ladyfingers and Mascarpone sprinkled with Cocoa Powder. They also do not include salad anymore with the dinner entree which is pretty wierd for a Italian place. Will go to Olive Garden from now on for Chain Italian.

3.5 based on the service Pretty reminiscent of an Olive Garden. The atmosphere was pretty dark, but comfortable. Our server was very friendly, and accomodating to all the requests of our party. The menu was pretty big. Not really "authentic" Italian, but decent food all the same. I had a panini with the shoe string fries, my friends got lasagna and bowtie festival. Portions are pretty decent, and the prices arent' too bad. Anyone who has read my reviews knows my predisposition to chain restaurants (I'm not sure if it's a chain, but it sure had that kind of feel to it). Service- good, food- average; at least we got seated quickly.

We were on our way to the airport and found Johnny Carino's on our GPS. I wasn't expecting much, since I'm not from Detroit and was just wandering in off the expressway. Have to say it was GREAT! We had our two children and they loved it, too. The dishes were unique, and the service was excellent. Way better than Olive Garden. We're from California and I'm going to see if we have any out here. I rarely review anything, but had such a positive experience (everyone in our group enjoyed their meal) I felt I had to review.

Seriously awful food and the service, not much better. I was on my way to the airport area for my last night in Detroit. It had been a long week and during my crazy week I had eaten on the run quite a bit. I was looking forward to a nice relaxing sit down meal and figured a chain restaurant would be safe. Boy was I wrong. I checked out the reviews on Yelp and decided on Carino's. Not stellar reviews, but it should be okay. When I arrived I was greeted promptly and offered a booth, a good start since I prefer a booth when dining alone. Again, my server stopped by right away and took my drink order. So far so good. She came back with a small loaf of what could be considered Italian Bread by some people, to me it had the texture of Wonder Bread with a crumbly crust...blech! I was trying to decide between the Eggplant Parmesan and Rosemary Chicken. My server recommended the Chicken so the chicken it was. I added a Caesar Salad to start with. The bread should have been my first indication of what was to come. The salad was equally bad. Wilted lettuce in a salad that had been prepared ahead of time and refrigerated. I barely ate half of it. When she brought my entree, which took forever it looked great. The taste, not so much. The chicken obviously wasn't grilled on site, it had the obligatory "painted on" grill marks. The "rosemary" part of the chicken was a sprig "stuck into" the chicken breast. It had absolutely NO rosemary flavor to it whatsoever. The pasta and vegetables the accompanied the meal were slimy and overcooked. I ate the chicken and left the rest. Interestingly enough there was a family of four directly across from me that told their server how great their meals were, especially what I assume was the wife/mother of the party. She kept raving about her food. I wanted what she was having!! Or, it could have been that she enjoyed it so much because she didn't have to cook that night. Who knows. It took forever to get the bill and I was glad to be able to leave. Relaxing dinner, yes. Good meal, far from it. Next time I'll go somewhere else, you should too.

Mediocrity at its best! Poor flavored, and over priced. Soup was super bland. Pasta was so-so. I have tried a few carinos around the country, they are all the same. Not worth another visit. PS. The bartender/staff were very pleasant.

Johnny Carino's has good food. Equivalent to Olive Garden at similar prices. I hate to be the guy who faults a place for a bad experience, but I had one here. At 7pm on a Wednesday, they were out of lasagna. No big deal, I told the waiter, and may I speak to the manager? The manager came out and was disrespectful and rude, and made no attempt to offer a similar-tasting dish for me to order. I was there for a birthday party so I was obliged to behave, but I wanted to lash out at the terrible attitude of both the wait staff and the management. Customer is definitely NOT right at Johnny Carino's.

Jonny Carino's was wonderful! Our waitress was very amiable and just as receptive to my attempt to hook my gay friend up with a straight waiter. Oh, and the food was delicious, too.

An Italian researcher I used to work for in a genetics lab gave me a piece of advice. "Friends don't let friends eat at Olive Garden." I wonder what he would have thought of this place. We have a comparable place on the east coast called Carrabas Italian Grill. I went with the Italian wedge salad and the Chicken bowtie festival. The Italian wedge salad was a wedge of lettuce, bacon, tomatoes, apple, candied walnuts and gorgonzola cheese. It was pretty tasty. The savory flavor of the bacon went well with the sweetness of the apple and candied walnuts. The Chicken bowtie festival was bowtie pasta with grilled chicken, bacon, tomatoes, onion, and garlic in a cheese sauce. It was good but the portion size was smaller than I would have liked. The meal also came with bread and olive oil to dip. The prices weren't too bad. The service was pretty good. The decor pretty much looks like every chain of this genre. Note that this is a family restaurant, so expect to find kids there. If you don't like kids, you should probably avoid this place especially during the dinner hour. I don't mind the little buggers. Is this authentic Italian? Probably not. Is it a decent place to go for Italian-ish food? Sure, why not?

"... reminiscent of an Olive Garden" I'd say significantly better than Olive Garden. Good value for lunch. Unlimited Soup, Salid and Bread for $5.99 and the soups are outstanding (specially the Italian Chile). Their Spicy Shrimp and Chicken Pasta dish is outstanding.

Johnny Carino's has drawn some inevitable comparisons with Olive Garden from earlier reviewers. To be sure, the food and ambiance are a little nicer at JC than the OG. That being said, its not great food and certainly isn't authentic. The gorgonzola penne was surpisingly bland since it was just mac n cheese after all. My girlfriend's garlic bowtie dish was better and had a nice little kick to it. The soup and salad were both sort of pedestrian. Service and pricing were both fine.

  • Samantha K.

My favorite place for italian food! I love the italian nachos and the bowtie festival dinner. I find the food very good and have never had bad service. The only thing I find strange is that no soup or salad comes with your meal. Almost every italian restaurant at leaves gives you one or the other.

This is a safe bet for reasonably priced italian fare. It's cheaper that Macaroni Grill, and not quite as good, but a lot better than Olive Garden. The service has been very good the last couple of times I went. Overall, the food will not blow you away but you'll leave satisfied. I'll definitely go back, especially since it's close. And by the way, they often have really good limited time deals.

Well, our waitress sat herself down and proceeded to tell us all about her most recent unplanned pregnancy, really starting our date night off on the right foot. She suggested the bruschetta, which we ordered, unaware that a large plate of regular bread and oil was on it's way. Maybe if I had paid closer attention to her life story I would have know better than to trust in her decision making abilities. The food was Olive Garden at best, at double the price. The only saving grace was the blackberry cream soda, but that's still no reason to eat here. Do yourselves a solid, steer clear.

I was there on Sunday, Jan 25th. First we were told that there was a 15-20 minute wait due to the fact that they were short staffed (at 5.45 on a Sunday). We opted to wait. Short staffed - okay. Less than 1/4 of the tables filled - the staff they had should have been able to handle it. Once seated, our server walked by a couple of times before acknowledging us and bringing a beverage.. The wait for our mediocre food was a good 30 minutes. Salad looked good, but had cheese when she asked for the cheese to be held. The potato and garlic was good, should be a little warmed. I had the shrimp in a garlic scampi. 8 shrimp, 3 cups of noodles, a little cheese and very little garlic. Will I go again? Only if I am outvoted.

I debated between a one star and a two star. I went to a Johnny Carinos at Corpus Christi, and it was pretty good. So, my wife and I decided to give it a try here. The food wasn't bad, with an asterisk. The service started out well, and then quickly faded. We went on a Monday night, and it was relatively dead. So, service should easily be good. We never had our glasses refilled. I even set my glass on the end of the table, just to make sure the waitor saw it. He didn't. I had the Chicken Basil Pesto Ravioli. It tasted good. However, I did have some food poisoning last night, indicating that the chicken was not good to eat. The appetizer bread/dip was alright at best. But it was clearly inferior to almost any other Italian restaurant. At the end of the day, there are too many other places to eat at to come back to this particular restaurant.

We came in on a Saturday night with a lot of people... 6 adults, a kid and a baby. They had 95% of their tables open (at 6pm on a Saturday... what?) so we were seated right away. My fiance and I had the steak and pasta dish... it was tasty. My mom had lasagna and she liked it. Two people at my table had salads and they said they were "okay" but definitely not bad. One of them had to send hers back because they didn't follow the instructions she gave about what to put on the side when she ordered. My child got fetuccine alfredo and she liked it. I can't remember what the other adult in my party ordered but he didn't complain. Overall, the food was delicious but I'm not sure I'm ever going to go there to spend $17 on steak and pasta ever again. The most irritating part of our experience here is that the place was dead as a door nail and you would think with that in mind and also the fact that we were a large party that our server would be up our hiney the whole time trying to earn himself a good tip. Our bill was over $100 so he stood to walk out of there with $15-30 tip! That is a big difference to work hard for if you ask me. But no... at one point, out of the 7 drinks on the table, 5 of them were bone dry. For several minutes. That is one of the most irritating things on Earth to me. If our server can't peel himself away from folding silverware (because there weren't even many guests in the restaurant to be tied up with) to check our drinks, why should we give him a tip at all? Or jeez, why didn't any of the other 6 bored servers stop by and top us off? On top of that... we were seated on the other side of a large paned window from the host station, and this creepy host sat there staring blankly (again, bored, because nobody was eating at the restaurant) at the window frame the entire time we were eating... so every time I looked up from my meal I saw this weird girl staring at me. What the heck??!!! I won't ever go back. Don't waste your money. This says it all: You'd have a better experience at OLIVE GARDEN!

Worst dining experience I've EVER had. I use to love this restaurant. We drove 45 minutes out of the way to come here because I was craving their food. Not only did our food take 40 minutes to come out, there was a pubic hair on my plate! I will NEVER go there EVER again.

When I was here it was after a wedding rehearsal, so the bride and groom rented out the entire back room. It was pretty packed in and was buffet-style, which was good and bad. They offered us Bud Light, red and white wine. (The red wine wasn't bad, although I can't recall what it was. Not a big wine-o.) They gave us bruschetta and mozzarella sticks to start off ...the sticks were pretty solid. For the entrees they had rolls (which were above average), spicy chicken pasta, eggplant parmesan and Italian sausage. There was also pretty good salad, and it was probably the best eggplant I have ever had -- and I can count on one hand the amount of times I've eaten eggplant. It was pretty good. Not the best and not the worst. Curious how service is without a whole room booked for a wedding party, though.

The only thing I enjoyed was my Pinot. The floors were very sticky as we were being led to our table. I really wasn't feeling that great and was looking forward to eating a salad at least, even if I didn't have an appetite. So I ordered a salad as well as my brother did and my bestie. I also ordered the calamari as my entree because I really was not that hungry, was really only there to see my bro. My brother ordered the chicken caesar panini, and my bestie ordered the seafood fettuccine Alfredo. Service was slow slow slow. And the place around dinner time was really not that busy, what was the problem. The cooks were short handed and backed up. Our waiter asked if we received our salads, I politely told him that we haven't. As he was walking away to grab them for us, our freaking entrees came. That really didn't get me upset either, I don't blame our waiter at all. There is some form of miscommunication that needs to be worked on. So he said he will take the salads off the bill, and brought our salads for us anyways. Which weren't that bad. My brother loved his sandwich, and my bestie inhaled her pasta. Wish I could've tried them, but I plan on coming here again when I'm feeling better and want to go on a carb binge.

Terrible experience service was bad, the seating was right in front of the open kitchen, where you could hear all the cooks and waitstaff swearing and yelling, real nice considering I had my young daughter with me, I had to send my food back because it tasted completely inedible. The waitress said they've been getting that dish sent back all day. WHAT?! Why would you continue to serve it! To top it all off we all got food poisoning! DO NOT GO TO THIS "RESTAURANT"!!

I ordered a carry out family size garden salad. A month ago a co-worker bought the same salad. It came loaded with 3 dressings, bread dipping sauce and a container of croutons. Well unfortunately, mines came with 1 1/2 dressings (don't know why) and a few croutons in a big container. I was kind of bummed. I would buy the salad again, but I will check my bag before I leave.

Came with a big group from work - there were 45 of us. They gave us the front room and one and a half servers. Food was on par but that poor girl that was our main server was way overwhelmed. She did her best and I give her 5 stars but the manager set her up for failure.

Yummy! Went here Friday afternoon after work for a Happy Hour and boy were we happy. If you have not tried the Combo Nachos it is a must! It comes with Italian Sausage and Chicken with cheese on top of Nachos! OMG - this is the Italian twist on Mexican Nachos. Very delicious and our waiter was so very nice - shout out to Endril! He had a infectious smile on his face and it permeated the entire bar area! Not only that but he had tickets to the GUN show - see my picture and you will understand this! Definitely a do again thanks Allen Park for having this fine Italian Restaurant within your city limits!

Overcooked pasta. Slow service. When i called the waiter over, he took my fork and stirred around the dish as if he didn't believe me about the pasta. They need to shut down this location or get a new chef.

Really nice place to eat, the food is good, but can be really expensive depending on what you get. Wished it was more variety on the menu. When we go there's usually a long wait on food to be prepared, but that's never a issue for us as long as the food is hot & fresh we don't mind waiting and they also bring rolls with olive oil, nuts mix which is really good. I would rate it a 5 star if they changed the menu up a bit, and added more of a selection.

This place is disgusting. There was what looked to be a tiny landfill of garbage and food debris under our table. There were fries, crayons and wet napkins all sloshing around under our feet. Hideous. The server seemed out of it and forgot to bring plates for the bread and never cleared the table after salads. The food was not served hot, but barely room temperature. The seats were still wet with whatever slop was soaked into the washrag they wiped them with. I will NEVER go back here. Someone should put this place out of its misery.

A cheaper alternative to Andiamo. Fantastic bread, decent prices, great service, but the food just misses the mark. I would consider going back, and perhaps rerating if the food is a bit better.

Today was declared my last visit to Carino's. The food is not that good, and the service is slow. I had lemon salmon, and didn't like it that much. The salmon that I cook at home is much better than what I had, and I'm not a good cook by any means. Nothing special to make me want to visit again.

Always come here for work events. The separate room is great for parties. The wait staff is hit or miss. Yesterday was a miss, our waiter seemed disinterested in life. The bread is amazing. I know the bread isn't why you go, but it's the best tasting thing they have. Their Italian food isn't really flavorful. I add more seasoning in my own kitchen.

Although our waiter was very nice, it was clear he did not know about the menu. When I received my Chicken Marsala, the chicken was completely freezer burned. I couldn't even cut through it. My husband order the lasagna which was suppose to be their specialty and it was warm on the outside and cold on the inside. Just save your money, not worth the effort!!

Waitress didn't know what veggies came in the dish I asked about. When the food arrived, I received something altogether different than what I ordered. Sent it back and when they brought me the right dish, it had the wrong type of pasta and the carrots were almost completely raw. Too much pasta, not enough sauce, what sauce was there was bland. Overpriced, underwhelming food, even if you can get what you ordered. Will not be returning, ever.

I've downgraded my last review. This service in this place sucks, slow and stupid. I'm sorry, but I'll never go back again this time.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
