Just returned from dinner at this local establishment. I was less than impressed. Thursday dinner hour and I was the sole customer. I am a trooper so I was seated for dinner. Decor wise, this place is nothing special. Standard Japanese decor, but a top 40 radio station was playing on the overhead. Odd. My server was nice enough, but really suffered on her English. Not her fault as I could understand her but still. Spread out over the bar were newspapers and personal mail. That was not appropriate for a business, but after all if you have no customers, why care how things look when the rare customer enters? I ordered steak and shrimp. The soup and salad was typical mushroom soup and salad with sweet ginger dressing. Nothing special. They wound up being the best part of the meal. The chef came out and half-heartedly did his show, but stopped once one of his friends came to eat, and from that point on, I was pretty much ignored. My food was bland. Little seasoning was detected. You got a lot of it, sure, and that got the the second star, otherwise it was largely unremarkable. I waited and waited for the server to come ask about my meal. No such luck. Interestingly enough before the chef started to cook, I asked if I could get extra mushrooms. He said they ran out. Really? They were in my soup, and you had no customers. No you did use them up at lunch, as you only opened at four. Also, in the same plaza is a grocery store. Come on..... A lot of reviewers say to not be deterred by the exterior. Agreed. Be deterred by the quality of the food and lack of customer service. If you want a full belly of tasteless food, step right up, otherwise keep driving. I visit Maine several times a year. I will never however visit this place again.

We left happy and full! I have sat here debating whether or not to rate Shogun four or five stars, but ultimately the incredible service we experienced pushed me over. This is not the fanciest or swankiest Japanese steakhouse I have ever been to, it's not the biggest or the most expensive. It is a fairly normal, fly under the radar place. If you judged completely on appearance you would have probably did a u-turn in their driveway. But we didn't. We were hungry, two cranky kids (16 months and 11 years), and decided we would take a chance. We were greeted by an older gentleman, who was so incredibly sweet and happy. Better word: Grateful. He was grateful that we had come in. Our server was quick and also very friendly with the children. Though her English wasn't the best- she took our order and in no time was bringing out soups and salads. Our Hibachi chef came, and verified our orders. 11 year old was getting kids meal steak, I ordered filet and hubby ordered the seafood combo (lobster tail shrimp and scallops). The little one was scared of he fancy knife works and the stranger in front of us, but the chef knew some magic tricks to keep her interested and entertained. The kids LOVED it. I wish I had gotten the chefs name, because he was one of the best I have seen! Our food was delicious and bountiful- you won't leave there hungry! Perfectly seasoned nothing burnt. I have been to lots of Hibachi and almost everywhere I wish to change some thing. This was so good! We were the only customers there on a midweek night in April, so maybe that was why the service was over the top great! We left a great tip and can't wait to go back someday!

Pros: Large Portion Sizes on main meal, cooks were friendly. Cons: Wait time was horrific, waitress staff was extremely lackluster and/or ignorant of us and the food was average at best: so you really did not want to finish your large meal. We decided to go to Shogun Japanese Steak House on a gamble as they were close to our B&B and they appeared more legit than the other finds off of google. Boy were we fooled... The Hibachi room in back was filled to the brim with 3-4 birthday parties or sets of parties, we were squeezed in after 15-20 minutes to an empty table and while our alcoholic drinks came quickly the water we requested AT THE SAME TIME, did not. Eventually they came around to taking our order, and the waiting began, and we waited, and waited. Finally the waitress realized we had not received our appetizer, soup or salad. When she came to take our empty bowls (soup was ultra watery and tasteless) we finally got her attention and got the water we had asked for. Eventually the owner (or whom we believed was the owner) came over and began to cook our food. While the portions were extra large, my wife (who loves hibachi style fried rice) could not stomach the bland and flavorless rice. The vegetables, Filet Mignon and chicken were cooked to order, but were sub par in comparison to past experiences. Our recommendation: Skip Shogun and order from Panda Express!

The restaurant was recently sold to new owners. My review reflects that of the NEW SHOGUN! Shogun is a typical Japanese Hibachi Steakhouse. For the price of your meal (which is on the lower to average side of what I have encountered at other comparable JSH restaurants) you get a bowl of soup, a salad, a shrimp appetizer (2 shrimp), mixed vegetables, fried rice and your protein of choice. No matter which entree you get, I can assure you that it comes with a very decent amount of food and that it will taste great. The thing that sets Shogun apart is its exemplary customer service. The serving staff and hibachi cooks were all first rate. When I went the sushi bar wasn't yet up and running, but on retrospect, I had plenty of food without it. Finally, get the volcano cocktail...It is a good price and has a very decent amount of alcohol.

Nice and fun restaurant. Very small though. The service was okay only. The food was alright as well. Basically you come/pay for the show. The show was fun.

Had a reservation for 6:00 for 6 people for a friend's birthday and waited an hour. Another party was sat ahead of us that had a later reservation because they had more people. I've heard good things, but I'm disappointed with the lack of customer service...will not go back.

The food here was delicious. The portions were large but for the price I would have been disappointed if I didn't have leftovers. The best part of this place was the staff. They were accommodating and made you feel like you were family. The only downside was the outside appearance. Some people will miss a great meal if they just look at the outside. Overall I would definitely eat here again.

We had a taste for hibachi, and this was close to home. Had always meant to try it for that very reason; just hadn't yet. Reviews were OK, so what the heck? Very easy to get a table (we were the only three there, aside from a group that had just finished) especially considering it was 8-ish in a Friday night. That told me something. Menu offered the standard combinations. Looked as though there may have been sushi offered at one point (counter seating was available with one of those sushi fridge display case things near the bar), but the case was completely empty; not even a shelf for the fish. This suggested they don't get enough business to offer sushi & still keep it fresh. If I'm wrong about that, sorry. Soup was unremarkable; salad was unremarkable. Dressing clearly bottled, as was the horseradish dipping sauce that was delivered to the table. Had a chicken-steak-scallop combination; while a huge portion, all the proteins were meh. And j prefer a seared scallop preparation; these were just kind-of warned through and tossed around with teriyaki. The veggies were OK and the fried rice was OK. The old man who greeted us was AWESOME. VERY SWEET & charming. We'd called ahead & said we were bringing a party of three; he addressed us as "hey the party of three" as we entered. The hibachi chef was very nice. The server was prompt, but she had no other tables, so Duh. In sum, Shogun wasn't bad; just not remarkable. Nothing we haven't had better, elsewhere. Might be back, but not as long as Fuji & others in Portland are still options.

The food was good. Sadly the place was empty, we had the place to ourselves. I wish they offered sushi as their website shows. Would we dine here again Yes!

Very tasty, very fresh. Needs a little updating on the outside and inside but don't pass this place by. Pablo was our amazing chef!! Oh and I know it doesn't look like much from the parking lot but give it a chance. We almost u turned in the parking lot.

After spending a cold rainy day in downtown Portland, I decided to stop for some dinner at Shogun before heading on my two hour evening trek back to NH. Shogun is a hibachi style Japanese restaurant where they cook your meal in front of you on the hibachi grill. This restaurant is pretty old school inside and outside, including the red wooden waterwheel outside. The place was several hibachi tables, each with 2 grills (8 seats) and accommodates up to 16 diners. I arrived here around 5:30PM and the place was fairly busy, though not packed. Several large parties were already seated and I was seated immediately, BUT I was seated by myself at an empty table. After 5 minutes, the hostess moved me to another table, BUT I was seated solo again at one half of the hibachi table (8 seats), while the other half had already 7 diners (college students) seated and just finishing their soup and salads. I ordered quickly Hibachi Chicken ($15.95) and I was brought out ice water, salad and soup. The salad was very average, iceberg salad topped with a cold syrupy ginger dressing. The broth was clear with mushroom slices. The hibachi cook arrived and went over what everyone ordered including myself, who was sitting still separated from group, which did not make sense since he was cooking my meal at the other grill. Why couldn't they sit me at the available chair with the 7 diners? The other diners also welcomed me to join them. I finally moved myself to the empty seat since I needed to get my dinner as it was being cooked and served out. At some of the other tables, there were birthday celebrations going on and the staff sang happy birthday shaking tamborines and maracas. If you're ever in Manchester NH, visit the Shogun there on your birthday and the owner will sing a very memorable rendition of happy birthday that's sure to please the crowd. Our hibachi cook played it safe with the hibachi tricks and flames compared to the other tables which had huge flames. First, the fried rice was already precooked (brown color with soy sauce) and the cook did the spatula routine and added eggs. He did flip some pieces of egg into diners mouths too. Next, the shrimp treat and meats were cooked and then the vegetables (sprouts, carrots, cucumber, onions). The flaming onion tower was done with success! The food came out pretty decent and tasted good. Our hibachi cook was friendly and conversed with the group and he is a college student going to school in Portland and learned a lot of his hibachi skills from watching You Tube videos, hehe. The other diners were all coming back from a Kid Cudi concert from the night before down in Western MA and still had a drive to Bangor that evening. Overall, the meal got off to a rocky start with the seat changes and being seated solo. I initially assumed more diners would arrive, but when the hibachi cook started cooking at the next grill and check my order for hibachi chicken, I had to move over (3 feet to the right) on my own. Once seated with a full group, things went smoothly and the meal was good. I did catch some of the Pats game on the TV at the bar before leaving.

To say I had an amazing time at Shogun would be an understatement! Delicious, and I mean delicious, japanese hibachi, awesome customer service and cheap Taiwanese beer...there's really nothing which satisfies greater than this dynamic trio! For dinner, I went with the chicken and shrimp combo. The fried rice was a tasty precursor to the main dish, both of which knocked my socks off, not to mention the perfectly cooked vegetable tempura, yum! Listen, if you're in the area, and find yourself looking for a relatively inexpensive place to dine...hit up Shogun! You'll be glad you did.
