Me and my fiancé went here the first day they were open. They didn't have an atm or accept cards at that time, so we told them we would come back at a later date to try their food. Louis and his wife proceeded to give us a few half arepas, with rice and beans for free. It was one of the nicest things I've seen, and I've been eating there ever since. This page sums up what an arepa is, but you will never know it's true glory until you have had one for yourself. The crunchy exterior with the fluffy interior is amazing. My personal favorite is the shredded beef with cheese (extra for cheese, but 100% worth it), while my fiancé love the avacado with cheese. The Yuca plate is also incredibly delicious, along with their rice and beans. The fresh cut french fries are another one of our favorites. There is honestly not enough good things I can say about this place. If you wind up anywhere near Saco, Maine, do yourself a favor and stop in. You will not regret it!

Really really delicious arepas. Not the biggest selection of fillings, but when the everything about the thing is on point, you don't need a bunch of choices. I've never had an arepa be so light in the middle while also so crispy on the outside. We really enjoyed the service as well. Very pleasant and familial. The green plaintains/tostones were oh so addictive and crispy. If you are unsure about price, one is certainly big enough for a meal with a side like green plaintains. If you are adventurous and like value, the 6 half arepas platter would surely feed two hungry adults. Overall a great experience and we will be back for more soon!

Came here based off of the Great Yelp reviews however, I have to disagree with what's on here. I left from there about an hour ago and I have already thrown up twice. The server was extremely patient/ nice with us because we had no clue on what to order and for that, the extra star was added. Please stay away from El Plato and El Trio. The ground beef was extremely salty and possibly undercooked/ microwaved? We are on vacation from NY and this was the last thing that we needed.
(2)Gordon R.
Loving, family run operation. Luis and his wife make amazing arepas and the best French fries you will ever have. Do yourself a favor and meet Luis and his family!
(5)Jessica W.
Very sweet clean place with excellent reasonably priced food, about 2 miles off exit 36 on 95N. My husband has a zillion allergies and they made him a wonderful plate of food that he could eat. I would definitely go back if I was in the area.

Look here is the thing I'm sitting here on an evening and only one other person is here. I say this because this place should have at least another 15 people in here. The only place around to get Venezuelan food and it's delicious. Tired of burritos and tacos? ( I know how is that possible? But hear me out) Arepas are a great alternative. Imagine a pita made of cornbread and lightly fried then made into a pouch. Still with me? Fill said pouch with rice beans beef/chicken/avocado/tuna/turkey your choice! And then....wait for it.....Fried Plantains!!! What I'm getting at is this place is awesome and you feel like you traveled to Latin America without all the fear of being abducted by gorilla fighters every American tourist has. I feel that way when I go to Canada so it's cool. Come in and order some great food. P.S it looks like a house.
(5)Jasmine R.
This place is so good! Try their tostones with avocado spread...yum! The staff is friendly and well-versed in the world of arepas. I can't wait to go back!
(5)Hieu H.
I love this family run place, the El Plato was absolutely delicious. The fried yuca and green plantain was delicious. I am traveling through New England on vacation and so far this had been my best meal, beat out the lobster roll I had today and 4x cheaper.
(5)Todd R.
Love this place!! The rice and bean plates with chicken or beef remind me of back home in New Orleans where we eat beans and lots other things over rice!!! And Luis's is right here in Saco!!
(5)Neva N.
This place is very yummy and I am craving it right now. My husband and I were there last month on the 10th of October. I didnt actually go inside, but my husband did. He ordered one chicken arepa with avacado and cheese and he loved it. I watched him shove it in his mouth and made yummy noises. My man is hard to please when it comes to food. I hade the ground beef arepa and the flavors were fab!!! My mouth is watering while thinking out it. WHen we got to the shreadded beef arepa we were full. It was still good, but thats one that we would like to try again. The owner Luis also gets an A plus. My husband said he was super welcoming and that made a huge impression on us. I love bussiness that care about customer service. We will be back next October and I can't wait. I'm craving it here in California and can't find anything at all like it.
(5)Vanessa L.
Shredded chicken with avocado & pabellon (beef). Very good, accommodating. Gluten free arepas are baked seperately - the bottom of the arepa is soggier & the top crispier as expected with baking. Would have been better with more if the shredded beef, which was Delicious!
(4)Ryan H.
Good quality, fresh food, great prices, fun music, and a friendly atmosphere make Luis's an awesome place to eat! Will be going back!
(5)Julia G.
Great find! Fantastic food, friendly and helpful customer service and easy parking made this a great lunch stop on the way to Portland. We ordered the 6 half arepas, fried yuca with toppings, horchata and coffee for under $25. Ground beef and avocado/tomato were our favorite filings.
(5)Maria S.
My fried plantains were burnt out and cold inside. when u add avocado to any arepa u get some kind of soggy salad with almost no avocado instead of the slice shown in the menu pictures. My food took 17 min
(2)Sara P.
Wow... Can't believe it was my first visit to this place. Will definitely be back very soon!! Delicious sandwiches, fresh and made to order. Friendly service who explained the menu in detail and made great recommendations. Plus sandwiches are gluten free. Easy parking and comfortable and clean inside.

I am in love with this place. In a tidy little building just outside the reaches of Saco heading west on Rte 112, you will find some pretty unique food to this area. I am making the assumption that not many Mainers have ever sampled Venezuelan cuisine but judging by the steady stream of customers, people in this neighborhood are really very lucky. And thanks to the wonderful reviewers on Yelp who directed us here! We took the advice and ordered the beef arepa and my DC the shredded chicken as he steers (no pun intended) (well, okay maybe it was intended :) away from beef. The owner is so customer-centric and quickly acknowledges your presence, doesn't rush and is happy to make suggestions. So the good news is you can eat here for 2 meals out of the 3 every day! I'm anticipating my next visit. I just loved my experience here and walked away sated with that feeling that all was right with the world. On another note, being the first day of my summer vacation, I didn't eat properly. Hmm...I had in this order at home...coffee, asiago cheese grits, a half bottle of somewhat flat coca-cola and twizzlers spread over an 8-hour period. So when we arrived stomachs growling in Saco near 6 pm I was definitely ready to EAT. Everything was so well prepared and I was glad I opted for some guacamole on my perfectly crispy arepa. Also note that it is gluten-free as the arepa is made of cornmeal. Completing the meal was a side dish of perfectly caramelized sweet plantains. I was reminded of my visit to South Beach Miami several years ago when attending the Art Deco Festival. I couldn't help but notice the little arepa stands set up along the parade route on Ocean Drive and though I was intensely curious, I didn't end up trying one but they looked delicious. Who would have thought that I would finally get the opportunity in little 'ole Saco Maine?
(5)Christian M.
Had a Carepas sampler. I've had plenty of Hispanic food my life but hadn't tried this before. It was a good change of pace. If I could do it again if just get the beef probably the chicken was good too. I thought the cheese and bean options not as good
(4)Pam C.
So good! Gluten free and tasty. The plantains are delicious.
(4)Don W.
We finally went to Luis's for dinner. Eating outside on a gorgeous night was amazing and we had all the food we could eat for $25. I really like Luis's and I'm glad that they seem to be doing so well.
(5)Brianna W.
This place needs to be on diners drive ins and dives! It is amazing and everyone should try it!!!
(5)Bonnie M.
I had a hard time deciding how to rate Luis'. My husband would rate this a five star. I am less enthused. I like a *wham!* punch me in the face flavor, and I just don't get that from the arepas. I would give three stars so we'll split the difference and go with four stars. The food is all fresh but I always have to add a good amount of salt. While I do like it, I wish the arepa shell had more flavor. It just doesn't quite knock my socks off. I've had the chicken, beef and guacamole/cheese arepas and my husband always sticks with the beef. He loves it! We'll pick it up again, but I'll be searching for more flavor every time.
(4)Johnny S.
What a great find by my wife. I'm no arepa expert, but as had been mentioned before, everything we ordered was delicious and fresh. We ordered to go, and brought it back to our campsite. We tried one of each of the arepas, all great. 2 ground beefs could come in handy after a night of a few drinks..They packed the bag with everything we needed. Nice family run place too. Skip all the fast food places on Rt.1, check them out.
(5)Marty L.
Just discovered this place around the corner. Great shredded chicken arepa...fully loaded with avocado and cheese. Luis was super friendly and even offered me his own dinner until I insisted. I'll be back several times I'm certain.
(5)Krista L.
I don't even know where to start! My taste buds are still dancing and I am already planing my next trip! I walked in from a recommendation from a Portland food blogger and I will say I was not disappointed! I ordered a bean and cheese Arepera with avocado. As I took my bag and headed home the first thing I noticed was the enticing smell. Not only was I now excited to try something new but now I was in pure imaginative bliss of what was to come. The first bite was everything I thought it would be and more! Not only was the helping very generous but when I bit in and felt the nice crunch of the Arepera and the comforting tastes of the fillings I couldn't help but sigh in relief. It felt like it had been too long since my hopes and expectations would be met when it comes to fast comfort food. If that wasn't enough the owner was beyond sweet and very friendly! My recommendation is to run and get a little "pocket of melty heaven" from this adorable shop off the road!
(5)Ryan D.
The only bad thing about this place is when your done eating, your done eating :( you just can not go wrong here. I recommend adding avocado sauce to your Arepa's and try the yuca with garlic salt. It is cash only but they do have an ATM inside.
(5)K W.
This is one of only two places in the area that we visited more than once on our vacation. Lovely, crisp corn arepas stuffed to overflowing with delicious fresh fillings. Makes a great change from lobster rolls!
(5)Ms M.
Delicious, authentic Venezuelan Arepas, served hot and made to order with fresh ingredients. This tiny place is deceptive from the outside, but it's clean and the food is exceptional and they have a friendly, helpful staff too!
(4)Walter D.
Well I got the Tuna Arepa & lg hand cut French fry priced at $9.70. The Tuna Arepa was very delicious and the fries were a bit chewy. The place is very clean and the owner is very polite. He does have some seating inside and out. Also this place is cash only but does have an ATM inside as you walk in. I will be back and I'm sure I will be trying something different the next time.
(5)Bryan P.
Wonderful family Venezuela restaurant! The food was great and had fast friendly service! I'm so glad that we tried it and will stop there again every chance we get.
(5)Katie P.
A great find in Saco. I'd never had Venezuelan food and it was quite a treat. Very casual and friendly. I had the arepa with chicken and avocado, it was delicious! Next time, I'll add the cheese too. We also tried the yuca fries and tostones, crispy and perfect with some sort of siracha mayo sauce. Can't wait to go back and try some other items on the menu!
(5)Sweta S.
I was really excited to try this place and disappointed at the lack of authenticity. They use regular cheese, plantains were oily, beans were bland (wouldn't be surprised if they were from a can). The bread tasted like a an oily corn cake. Not at all fluffy or a sufficient vehicle for a "sandwich". The actual product looks nothing like the pictures on their website.
(2)Joe C.
I've turned into a regular at Luis's and not just because it is a block away from my work. I would drive miles and miles for an authentic cooked meal like Luis's arepa and tostada meals. Now serving delicious and flaky empanadas!! Try the Venezuelan Coffee while you're there.
(5)Chad P.
100% delicious food at a good price. The staff is friendly, the place is clean, and I'll be heading back again soon.
(5)Ronald D.
If I am lucky enough to know my last day on Earth, I want my last meal to be food from Luis's. No bullshit. This is the most delicious and heart warming food I have ever eaten. While the arepas, with sweet corn buns and meaty filling are exquisite, my favorite menu item is the fried plantain salad with avacado sauce. I could eat this EVERY day and never tire of it. Luis and his beautiful famly are friendly, warm and gracious....and super patient with us gringos and our thousand questions. There is a wonderful welcoming vibe in his arapera with his family nearby, it's like eating in a friend's living room in Caracas. And like a home it is pristinely clean. I love this place.
(5)Brian S.
Great hole in the wall joint! Luis is friendly and helpful, and the food is delicious, different, cheap, and very filling. Perfect.
(5)Peggy K.
Very good food at a reasonable price. Although it is listed on Yelp as Spanish, they are actually Venezuelan/Colombian. I had an arepa with meat, black beans and fried plantains. It was tasty and the fresh cilantro was nice. I also had a mango pineapple smoothie - very good. The restaurant is very small and casual, but neat and clean.
(4)Ky L.
This place is AMAZING I would give it 200 stars if I could I love the beef arepera and the guacamole arepera. I tried it for lunch the other day, I liked it so much I went back and got it for dinner the same day.
(5)R E M.
You would never guess this place was in Saco. Hard to find, but worth every bite! Absolutely amazing food, homemade, fresh and different. The owners are great as well.
(5)Gabriel N.
Good for a quick, cheap meal. Service is friendly and the food is good, if a bit greasy (the beef arepas, at least). Definitely worth at least a visit.
(4)Christian B.
I'm in town on business and have been looking for a good experience. I saw all the great reviews on yelp and had to check this place out. Believe me, they have earned every one of these 5 star ratings. Food- all made from scratch, fresh and delicious. Pricing- Incredibly reasonable for the quality. Service- Luis is very friendly and personable. The only conceivable downside is that it's cash only, but that is so minor compared to everything else. I will be going there again soon.
(5)arturo b.
I have contacted them and they have confirmed there is no food from Spain offered there. They call food from South America "Spanish" food in the same way they call food from North America "English" food.
(3)Burl H.
Wow! Delicious! Inexpensive! Everything on the menu is worth trying, but I love the areperas filled with chicken. Or the shredded beef, or avocado. Not to forget the black bean, the tuna, the cheese... Convenient take out, but they also have a small comfortable dining room with a beautiful fish tank. And there's seating outside!
(5)Monica F.
My boyfriend and I stopped by last night after reading the great reviews here. We ordered the shredded beef aperas, one with guac and the other with cheese. We also got the fries, which were delicious. Overall, a very good meal with good sized portions. The owner was very nice but his wife didn't seem overjoyed to have a customer when we walked in around 7:00 pm. Maybe she was just tired. Wish we could pay with a debit card vs cash. Who carries cash these days? :-)
(4)Lindsay B.
Great, authentic food unlike no other! The shredded chicken arepa with the avocado sauce is unreal. This quality of food paired with the speedy service is unheard of. I love, love, love Luis'!!
(5)Sarah D.
I'm actually giving this place 5 stars because of the fact it is so Gluten Free friendly. Since the arepas are naturally GF, I didn't have to substitute anything-which was kind of exciting. However, since they do share the frying oil with all foods, you can call ahead and see when they last changed the oil, or they will bake your arepa instead of frying it. Their fries are hand cut an yummy. Oh, and add the avocados, you won't be disappointed.
(5)Sharon D.
Another Yelp gem! Authentic Venezuelan food, without the scary "street vendor" vibe. We got arepas, empenadas, fried plaintains, and rice and beans. All very flavorful and not overdone at all. The restaurant is a small take-out counter with a few tables, very clean and well kept. And Luis, himself, is great! Friendly and happy to talk about the food he loves and where it comes from.
(5)Tracy A.
Um, just go here. Delicious arepas, unbelievably friendly service. They will take the time to explain to you the food items and how its prepared. We loved our dinners. Too bad licking your plate is considered bad manners. We are considering going back tonight!
(5)Marie A.
Excellent arepa pabellon. I lived in Venezuela and I ran into Luis' place by coincidence while at a conference in town. What a surprise to run into this great place and too bad it is so far from Boston. I can't wait for the cachapas!
(5)Charlie C.
My daughter and I found this wonderful place to eat by serendipity! We took the wrong exit off the highway and it was our good fortune. The food was authentic and wonderful. The proprietors are warm and friendly. The establishment was very clean. Prices quite reasonable. Couldn't ask for more!
(5)Cassie C.
**AMAZING** I've heard of areperas and seen them on tv before, and have always drooled just looking at them, but never would I have imagined I would be able to get the chance to try them for myself. This place is just outstanding. I had the shredded beef with cheese (that is how Luis recommended it- and boy am I glad he did) and sweet plantains. My young son loved them just as much as I did! Living just minutes from this little piece of heaven is so exciting to me, knowing I can have such delicious food anytime I crave it. Not only were the owners so super friendly, they were also kind enough to give me a small sample plate of friend yucca with garlic salt, on the house. I know where I will be sending friends and family when they want a real authentic meal!! 10 stars and a customer forever :)
(5)Robin J.
Totally by luck, and I mean luck, did I find Luis's Arepera and Grill which serves absolutely DELICIOUS Venezuelan Cuisine! I had picked up my daughter at college in Lewiston to bring her home to be with family for her birthday weekend. We both decided we were hungry and I needed a pick me up to finish our drive to South of Boston. We took the next exit which led us on 195 East. We exited 195 the first chance we got, Exit 1, to locate food. At the end of the ramp we chose to go left onto Industrial Park Road which dead-ended shortly. Should we go left or right? We took a left out of shear chance onto 112. Right down the road on the left was a small place that had a sign advertising Vegetarian (our preferred choice). We pulled in and parked and I am overjoyed that we did! Never having had Venezuelan food we decided to order two items which turned out to be unbelievably delicious! We ordered one Avocado Arepa which is a quickly and super lightly fried corn "pita" that they slice in the middle and heaped with veggies and tons of avocado. The other item we ordered was Fried Yucca with cheese and avocado sauce which was unlike anything I have ever eaten, but so delicious! I know these items are very lightly fried and I usually avoid it, but this was so light and not greasy and the veggies and avocado are so satisfying. I will return any chance I get and tell everyone headed north on 95. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE! ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!

This Venezuelan eatery just opened in May 2012. (Yelp doesn't have a "Venezuelan" option, so I picked "Spanish" because it seemed to be the closest fit.) My husband and I passed it on the way to the gym and decided to give it a try. A small, friendly place with a few inside tables and outside picnic tables. Owner is very friendly. Arepas were excellent! We got them to go. The corn pastry was perfect - crispy outside, tender inside. We had two: the Pabellon Criollo (beef, plantains, and beans) - Yum! And Shredded Chicken with cheese, peppers and scallions. Yum on that one too. They are open all day long so you can get breakfast, lunch and dinner. Prices are more than reasonable ... $4.99 for a good-sized arepa. They also have Empanadas, a bunch of appetizers including yucca fries and hand cut potato fries. Breakfasts include a variety of empanadas and arepas. There are also vegetarian options. And churros for dessert! Visit this place ... they just opened and need the support. The food is good! Nice to have a choice over the multitude of pizza houses, sub shops and burger joints in this area. They don' t have a web site yet - you'll just have to stop by.

i wrote a great review for luis's arepera & grill. why was it filtered? i will say it again: the food is GREAT! it is a nice change from all the other restaurants in the area. i go here all the time and i like it. try it once and you will be hooked.
(5)Kathryn H.
This place is a hidden gem on North Street in Saco -- since discovering it shortly after moving to Scarborough, we've stopped by every chance we get. They specialize in "arepas," which are a bit like tacos, but with a more substantial crispy cornmeal shell, and are filled with your choice of meats, beans, cheese and more. My favorite is the pabellon criollo, which is filled with shredded beef, beans, cheese, and delicious sweet plantains. My husband and I also love to share the fried yuca, which comes with a creamy avocado sauce, and diced tomatoes. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, though, and it's all very well priced... They also sell huge bottles of Sriracha for just $4!
(5)Kristin B.
Go to Luis's! The food is fantastic, and Luis is an attentive owner who cares about making his patrons happy. A great, affordable meal. Support this local business!
(5)Kev I.
delicious arepas, and warm, friendly service from Luis himself. this place may not look like much, but the food is excellent.
(5)Danielle L.
Absolutely delicious. My Mother and I stopped in to grab some to-go on the way to the beach, areperas make perfect handheld snacks. Everyone working was really friendly and courteous. I can't help but admire a small business owner who truly cares about delivering a quality product to his customers. Luis's is 5 minutes down the road from my house, so I'm sure I'll be a familiar face in no time. I'll also be dragging my friends here often!
(5)Michele G.
This was a nice place close to our hotel. Staff was very friendly and explained the food. I had the beef arepa with cheese delicious. Would definitely go back to this spot again when am in the area.
(5)Meghan L.
What a treat! Really great for a quick, affordable, unique meal. On our first visit my boyfriend and I had the beef and pabellon arepas and split an order of fried yuca w/ avocado and cheese. Every was delicious and the meal was really filling. We left with happy, full bellies and have been back twice since!
(5)Jayne D.
What a gem! Interesting and delicious food isn't easy to find in Saco but Luis' certainly is it. The shredded chicken in my chicken arepera was very tasty and moist and no mystery bits. I'm getting the sweet trio next though. Win!
(5)Danielle S.
I went to Luis's tonight and got two arepas; a pulled chicken and pulled beef. Both were only $5 and absolutely delicious! I really hope they stay in business because I'll be back! It is so nice to have something completely unique to the area and its locally owned as well so I am happy to support that. It was close to their closing time and he offered to put avocado on my arepas for free when they usually charge extra. Staff was helpful and offered me a recommendation. They also offer vegetarian options. Not very much seating inside but there are picnic tables outside. Lots of drinks available in the cooler- both cans and bottles. Parking lot behind the building.
