This is your typical greasy-spoon/diner type of restaurant. Good coffee, very polite and attentive help, nothing surprising on the menu. Eggs, egg-accessories (toast, bacon, etc.) and such. This isn't a place where you let your culinary imagination soar - if you order Eggs Benedict, expect said sauce to come from a package. But again, the coffee is hot, the service is good and the food decent and decently priced.

I've eaten here a few times, and it's a great relaxing atmosphere, with great service. The breakfast food is decent too. It's a good spot to stop in at, when in town

We were a party of 6 and were told to sit anywhere as soon as we arrived. Food was excellent. Homemade hash and the homefries were well seasoned and cooked golden brown. Service was prompt. Steak and cheese special onlmelette as well as plenty of other things to choose from including lobster and cheese benedict.

I like the down-home small-town atmosphere here, I like the old-school lunch counter with barstools. I like the friendly wait staff. The coffee is OK, barely. The omelets can be quite good. Their spuds and hash are nothing worth writing home about. Price is fine. But WORLDS better than Rosalindas down the street.

Food was delicious. I had the Canadian bacon eggs Benedict and it was one of the best I've ever had. Service was friendly and quick, and the environment is cheerful and bright. Will definitely be back.

I had the Belgian Waffle with strawberries and whip cream. My friend had the lobster scrambler. The food was good and the service was solid. The only reason I wouldn't give all 5 stars is it's a little crammed inside, but otherwise a good restaurant.

My day is SET now that I had lunch here! WOW. The Greeks gave us Democracy, Zorba, Ouzo, and great food. I had the spinach pie w/Greek salad, baklava & coffee. I'm sitting outside on the sidewalk table under the umbrella, enjoying this fine afternoon in Maine. All is right with the world - the only thing missing is my Wife, but I'll have to come back with her if only to eat here, then fly home! Friendly staff, roomy indoors, outdoor seating, and great food. If you live in Saco Maine, go here. If you DONT live in Saco Maine.....fly here.

Great place for breakfast or brunch, and it's right next to the train station. Huge pancakes! And good omlettes. Nothing fancy, but a good place to grab a simple bite.

This is someone else's breakfast place. First, the good news. The Golden Rooster has a ton of curb appeal for a storefront restaurant, it looks clean, and their service is really good. There are enough people working and they're generally on top of things. The only time we needed to flag down a server was to ask for more coffee. Unfortunately, our meals were surprisingly devoid of flavor. The home fries, eggs, and even the corned beef hash looked good but didn't have much taste. The only reason I was pretty sure that the corned beef hash was homemade was because of the huge piece of gristle that I found in it. I think that the flavor problem has to do with a lack of spices. Not salt, spices. The clientele was mostly older and I know that many of them don't like things particularly spicy. I think they know their customers and they're giving them what they want. Unfortunately, I thought it was incredibly bland. And the coffee wasn't very good. It was drinkable, but that's about all. They've recently opened for dinner and their somewhat Greek menu sounds interesting but there's no mention of this on their web site. I'd love to try their dinner because the area is sorely lacking in Greek food but for breakfast, I think I'll try someplace else. Four stars for atmosphere and service, but two for the food and coffee averages out to three. But you might want to add a star if you prefer your food to be fairly bland.

We found the service friendly, but very slow. Our meals sat on the kitchen service window for about 10 minutes before our waitress grabbed them and brought them to our table. This, of course, made for our meals to both be cold. The worst part, however was trying to get our check when we were done eating. We sat there with our dishes stacked on each other for 20 minutes before she finally asked if we were done and wanted our check. Then.. It took another 10 minutes for her to grab it and bring it to us. The coffee was ok, until I got to the bottom of the cup that was full of grounds... We will not be going back to the Golden Rooster.

Let me start by saying that I recently moved to the area. I have had the joys of living in Portland and indulging in their food scene for awhile. Although this place seemed busy it seemed to cater to an older crowd and in the long run left me unimpressed. The menu selections were not bad, but it wasn't anything special. In the three times that I have ventured to this establishment it just seemed to lack something. My boyfriend who is a big hash lover was highly UNimpressed. He explains that it was like "eating hash out of a can". The homefries were cold most of the times that we went and seemed to lack a real distinguishable flavor. The toast I have had has been a bit too hard and had the crunch of a cracker...not what I wanted to eat with my eggs!!! The waitstaff is very friendly and are very accommodating (which is the main reason I haven't brought this down to two stars) but once again...there are just other places I would rather go to get breakfast for real flavor. With the lack of excitement for breakfast I don't know if it would make me want to venture there for dinner.

Stopped in for lunch while passing through and had a good meal. Nicely located right on Main Street this restaurant wasn't very busy but had good service and good food. Tried the special soup of the day (loaded potato soup) and it was very tasty. Defiantly worth stopping in if you want a good food that is priced very well.

Pretty standard breakfast joint, but defniitely nothing special. Found it through yelp, and decided to go when I read that they were rated "#1 breakfast" 4 years in a row. i think that may be because they're the only ones!! but anyway.... After being aloofly greeted and told to seat ourselves, we waited a few minute before menus were brought over. After a little more waiting, our orders were taken. Food came out quickly, but thats about the only plus with the service. definitely expected more, and had experienced much better in other parts of Maine. Ordered a Belgian waffle with eggs and bacon. eggs are eggs. was given like, 2 strips of bacon. and the waffle was kind of crumbly, not chewy like i'm used to or prefer. Overall, it underwhelmed, especially for a place voted #1, 4 years in a row. So overall, below average to average service and average food. Definitely didnt meet expectation. Perhaps I ordered the wrong thing.

Driving through and stopped for breakfast. Cozy little place with ok food. The french toast i had was a bit soft and underdone for my taste, but maybe that's just a style choice. I liked the little bar area seating up front, and even though i took a while to get the check, i had a decent meal.

This is not a fancy place, but frills free and affordable. My brother was on the lookout for lobster eggs Benedict, he got the last one of the day. He stated it was tasty. I ordered the standard 2 egg breakfast, bacon, English muffin. My bacon was just right crispy, the English muffin toasted to perfection, the home fries had a nice flavor, and my eggs cooked eggs-actly to my over medium order. Our waitress, Melanie, is a diner pro greeting patrons by name, calling those she knew well "hon" and enthusiastically chatting with us about the best menu items. She emphatically told me how much she loved her job when I complimented what a doll she was. This diner's real gem is her personality. The only thing I noted was a nasty diner patron seated directly behind me that complained from the moment she sat down but hardly the fault of Melanie or the establishment. We left full and satisfied of an accomplished mission. Do check it out if in the area.

It's a great, affordable restaurant, and one of our favorite places to go to when we are in Southern Maine. There aren't really any unique menu items, but the food is high-quality.

One of my favorite places to get breakfast while in southern Maine. The omellete here is amazing, I always get bacon, cheese, ham and mushroom. Cute place in downtown Saco. Been a fan of this place since 1998.

This is a good breakfast and lunch place, but they are not open during the evening. The food is good, basic diner food, breakfast served whenever they are open. I was a little disappointed one time when I ordered an omelet and the vegetables in it were mostly uncooked, not a major deal, and everything else I have had is very good. The best part of this restaurant is definitely the avgolemno, or lemon-rice-chicken soup. The taste is excellent! My friends and I have gone through bowls of this stuff and can never get enough. It's not obvious on the menu, but just ask for the lemon-chicken-rice soup and they'll bring it right out! The prices are low, the service is good, and the food is basic and tasty. You can't ask much more from a little diner, and they do a great job here!

we came here on a bad day - it was a very hot summer day and their electricity was down. it was an interesting experience. the food was reasonable diner breakfast. the service was good. the decor was typical neighborhood diner.

I've been searching for a good place for breakfast in this area for awhile. Very casual, but don't let that fool you. The omelete was perfect. The I ordered the Rooster Omelete without tomatoes and the vegetables where cooked perfectly. The waitstaff could not have been friendlier and offered to warm up my coffee several times during the meal. If you can find it, I strongly recommend veering off the beaten path.

Normally I give places at least two tries before posting a negative review... however I will never be coming back here again! We took my husband's grandma out for breakfast on a Sunday morning and had an awful meal. The Greek omelet had so much spinach in it you couldn't taste the egg or any of the other ingredients... like literally an entire box of the frozen kind; and the home fries on the side were cold and bland. My husband ordered the pancake special which was served with the two eggs literally on top of the pancakes, making them wet and soggy (on top of already being burnt). Grandma's French toast was fine, although nothing to write home about. Our waitress was completely MIA after dropping of our food so we never got refills on our coffee and tea, try as we might to call anyone over to our table. My husband had just gotten up to go ask for the check when finally we caught a different waitress' attention. All in all, this was a gross meal with poor service and we will not be back.
