We stopped at the Brass Compass for an early lunch as we made our way up the coast to Bar Harbor in late September. Main Street has wonderful artsy shops and the Brass Compass is a good choice for lunch. We both ordered lobster rolls, and they were delicious, served cold with a touch of mayo on warm toasty rolls. They server was helpful and knowledgeable about the town and area. As we left we complimented the cook and told him it was our first lobster roll ever. He said we should have told him that and he would have made them extra special!

The Brass Compass albeit makes a fine Lobster Club sandwich, I have 2 valid complaints the amount of Lobster on the sandwich and the price point being 21 dollars. You dont have to make me the sandwich that beat Bobby Flay but more Lobster for the price would be Awesome!

Serving breakfast today until noon...nice for Sunday brunch fare. At short wait at the front door just confirmed this is an awesome eatery and popular on the weekends as well. Homemade giant muffins and cinnamon rolls + a long list of brunch items on the menu to tempt your taste buds. Decided to try the Penobscot Benedict with 2 crab cakes and home fries - YEAH...definitely a great choice. The food at The Brass Compass is first rate and served up fresh to fill your belly. Parking is tricky...grab a space on Main Street when available or use free municipal parking and walk over a block or two. Open 7 days a week from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.!

Television chef Bobby Flay had a "lobster club throwdown" awhile back in which he pitted himself against the owner of this restaurant. We watched as Chef Flay did his darndest to get the upper hand with his version of a lobster club sandwich. But the simplicity and finesse with which these are made at the Brass Compass won over the crowd and the judges. The sandwich looked so delicious on TV we decided that when next in Maine, we would have to stop into the restaurant to try it for ourselves. The Brass Compass is a cute place on a busy street. Although we found a nice table on the outside patio it wasn't the quietest spot in which to have our late lunch. While there is a full menu of many delicious sounding foods, it was the lobster club that we wanted. We were not disappointed. These triple-decker sandwiches are stuffed with luscious lobster meat that is gently mixed with just a bit a of mayo so that the fresh, clean taste of the lobster is front and center. The addition of the bacon (which any good club sandwich will contain) was icing on the cake. The sweetness of the lobster with the saltiness of the bacon was the perfect taste combination. Since I'm really not eating bread these days, after a couple of bites I de-constructed my sandwich. I was left with a beautiful and fabulous mound of fresh lobster meat. It was filling and delicious. These club sandwiches were $19.99 a pop and while pricey you do get a lot of lobster. The sandwiches come with a side of golden fries and some pretty darn good cole slaw. Service on the patio was a tiny bit on the slow side but we were in no rush so for us it was fine. The lobster clubs provided a very substantial lunch, so much so that all we wanted for dinner much later on were some salads. I would definitely return to the Brass Compass Cafe but I'm not sure if I would be able to try anything else on the menu; it would be hard to go there and turn down what I now know is really a fantastic lobster sandwich.

My family looks forward to coming here for breakfast on the last day of our annual visit to Rockland. The blueberry bread pudding is always a hit. Usually, everything is great, the servers are friendly and fast. But this year we had a different experience (and it sounded like a few tables nearby did, too). I ordered the Compass Muffin, a simple english muffin with egg and cheese and a side of home fries. Everything came out overcooked. The english muffin was so burnt it was black, the egg barely recognizable. The home fries were cooked right and the flavor was good, but I was surprised when I chewed them and crunched sand. Sand is unmistakeable - I've had enough sandwiches on the beach to know what sand feels like. My mom had the special raisin french toast, the menu claimed 4 large slices. Her 4th slice was the end piece of the loaf and barely a sliver. The quality control seems to be suffering here, which is unfortunate because it's a great little local breakfast spot.

The Brass Compass is a really solid bet for breakfast with a Maine twist. They have many omelets and eggs Benedict variations involving local seafood, and homemade breads. It's not hip, at all, but it is really good. The service is quick and friendly (waitresses will likely call you "hon" or "deah") and the prices are totally reasonable for the size of the portions and the freshness of the ingredients. You can substitute a grilled blueberry muffin for toast. Yum. And they're open at freaking 5am Mon-Sat, and 6am on Sunday.

We went here for lunch on Easter, after it being recommend to us. First thought upon walking in was, really the area they cook on is out in the open, on blocks of wood!! The specials are not on a typed up piece of paper, but hand written on a scrap. The duo seafood platter my mother-in-law and husband ordered came to the table so greasy, you could see it. The fries on the bottom of the plate were burned and soaked in grease. I ordered the grilled chicken Caesar salad, that came with dry, non grilled chicken, and no flavor. Disappointed to say the least. The place needs a makeover, and they need to move the kitchen out from the dinning area, a waitress had small bowls fall and almost hit her in the head, and smashed on to the floor and broke, all less then a foot from us. I will not eat here again.

Had the famous lobster club and fries really good but I thought it was priced a little high ....staff was great

(We passed this by for years as a tourist trap - the snobby fools we were!) The lobster club is destination dining for a hundred miles or more, except in January and February when it's much harder for them to know how much to get. Chowder is brilliant - not pasty, flavorful. The fried clams are always sensational (compare with Cape Cod and Ipswich, MA). The pies are worth it, if you can save room for dessert. Check out that brass compass from China - it shows the importance of knowing where you are!

The Brass Compass dropped the ball. I rarely go out for breakfast, so when I do, it's a treat. I always seek an omelet with unusual ingredients and ALWAYS ask that my eggs be wet so that the ingredients be better incorporated into the eggs. I received a rubbery slab of eggs that clearly was generically cooked without ingredients in mind, and was then put on a plate adding my stuff and folded over. Sooo disapointing. Potatos well cooked but bland and great bread (7 grain) but paper thin.
(2)Aiden C.
It was good food, but obviously a little pricey due to the face that Rockland is a tourist town. Overall, I was pleased.

Service was, quite frankly, atrocious when we came in yesterday for brunch. The place wasn't that crowded but it took forever to get our food and once it came I got the wrong toast and there was another order of homefries and toast missing. But I have to give it 4 stars for the lobster omelet alone. I've gotten many lobster omelets in my day but this was ridiculous. I think there was more than one lobster in my omelet based on the amount of meat. With homefries and homemade toast, the $18 price tag was ludicrously cheap. And the homemade toast was really good. My meal saved this from being a 3 star review. Luckily I wasn't in a rush, otherwise the service would have been unacceptable.
(4)Barbara C.
Best breakfast ever! The sausage omelet was excellent. Home fries were great the first time....not so great the second time. Very local place and only place I would want to eat breakfast in Rockland

I don't visit Rockland very often, but was in town today for work and a local friend asked me to meet her for lunch at the Brass Compass. She said she had never been, but had heard the food was great. We went at noon, and there was a crowd at the door, but it turned out to be a large party waiting to be seated. The hostess greeted us and was very friendly in telling us it would be only a few minutes, which it was. We were seated in a little cramped spot on the way to the kitchen and I started to worry. But as soon as our waitress came by my fears were put to rest. The staff was really friendly, funny and sweet, and it wasn't an act - they were just good people. My friend and I got a "Tuesday Two-Fer" - two fried platters in one. I had whole-belly clams and haddock. It came with really good 'real' fries, homemade and hand-cut, and a delicious colorful slaw. It came super fast, especially for that time of day and with that crowd. In fact, our waitress came and said "not to rush you, but I'd love to take your order before that table of 8 if you're ready, to get you served faster." We were, and we appreciated her offer. It came within a few minutes and we remarked about that to the (another) waitress who brought our food. She said , "sometimes we're quick, but sometimes only half-fast...." :) Our adorable waitress checked on us often and always with a smile and something nice to say. There was a TON of food - too much for either of us to finish, though we tried because it was delicious. As we left the cook called over to us and thanked us for coming in. HIGHLY recommended!

A decent casual atmosphere. I have been there several times over the years, but won't go back. If you do go there stick to the lobster rolls. The kitchen seems unable to handle other items on the menue. My most recent experience was a sandwich that was allegedly grilled but the bread was soggy with a butter or butter like substance. Not browned at all. The waitress offered to replace it and when she did it wasn't what I ordered. I haven't tried the fried seafood so can't speak to that.

OK, so the wife and I are at the Lobster Festival in Rockland, ME. We are standing on a street corner all morning on Saturday and watching this small town parade go by. After the parade we turn around and there is a banner... WINNER of Bobby Flay Lobster Club throwdown. What the heck, we decided, why not grab lunch here ? We sat outside and started our meal with deep fried whole clams. While I enjoyed it, my wife had two of them that weren't pleasing; maybe not fresh or not cleaned properly, which she politely spit out into her napkin. We then split the lobster club. A nice sized portion, but we both felt that the addition of the extra slice of homemade white bread in the center was really a bit much, From an architectural standpoint, I understand the need for that slice of bread to maintain sandwich integrity, however, we both simply wound up eating the sandwich with our forks. Flavor ? LOBSTERRIFIC !!!!!!!!!!!
(3)Rob D.
Went here for a late breakfast on our way home. The lobster club was delicious and huge. A little too much mayo for my liking. If you love mayo you will love the sandwich. The home fries that came with it were good as well. Come here for the lobster club. We tried a cinnamon roll which was also pretty good. My daughter had a blueberry muffin which was homemade and also decent. The eggs were nothing special, I almost ordered skillet #1 which was a mix of corned beef hash and a few other things which sounded great. But, the lobster club won. I am actually glad it did, because as we were going to the bathroom, the door was open to their supply closet which was right by the bathrooms. THe corned beef hash is from a large can of SYSCO brand corned beef hash. Not home made. They had a lot of canned goods for pre-made stuff so it makes you wonder what is from a can and what is home-made. Its a diner type of feel and a lot of diners I know make their own stuff! Especially staples like corned beef hash. Kids had french toast, pancakes and eggs all which seemed very run of the mill and nothing special. Go here for the club. If you are looking for a unique dining experience or getting something you can't get anywhere else don't bother. Get the club to go and move on. Service was good and staff friendly.

Stopped here for lunch recently while visiting Maine. Outstanding food and service! The lobster roll was the best I had over five days along several coastal towns. We found it based on Yelp reviews, glad we stopped.

So I've heard mixed reviews about this place and since I'm new to town I figured I'd try it for myself. First and foremost the waitress that sat us was rude and basically threw our straws at us. We ordered an omelette and pancakes next and thought how could these be messed up. As we we waited for our food to cook I watched a waitress touch money, menus, and seat people then go over to the cinnamon buns that were uncovered in front of a customer who was eating, pick one up with her bare hands and place it in the microwave. She then wired for it to heat up and touched it again to make sure it was heated. GROSS! Our food arrived and my girlfriends pancakes were no where near round and looked like they have been through the war. There was black specks from the grill all over them and a piece of bacon cooked into it. She hates bacon to say the least. My omelette came and there was so much grease and oil I could start my own car lube shop. I ate about three bites as she ate about three of hers as well and our stomachs started to turn. Needless to say I suggest you pass by this spot and save your stomachs!

My wife and I love breakfast places and the Brass Compass didn't come up as one locally in Rockland but it absolutely should! Big portions, fantastic omelettes, at a good price. Try the homemade white toast. I found the service to be very fast, friendly, and my coffee was never empty.
(5)K W.
We went here for breakfast & it was a pleasant experience. The blueberry pancakes were delicious and eggs were made as requested. The waitresses were pleasant & hardworking. It's a popular place, so don't be surprised if there's a little wait to be seated.

Our first planned stop in Rockland wasn't open for lunch so we decided to walk around the area to see what was available. We happened upon The Brass Compass and saw the giant Throwdown sign outside and realized, we've seen this episode! So inside we went. It's a small homey restaurant with a open kitchen and waitresses running around everywhere. One thing to note - they cannot serve alcohol outside on the patio, because it belongs to the city. So we sat inside and I had my wine :) We found out that Lynne gets up every day at 3am to make bread, go fruit picking, etc. for the restaurant. Hence they are only open for breakfast and lunch. Lobster club - of course I had to order this! It was huge, with perfectly toasted white bread (made in house daily), perfectly crispy bacon, and perfectly cooked lobster with minimal mayo. Cold/hot/crunchy/creamy/sweet/salty mm mm good! I got onion strings alongside that were also delicious. BF ordered the haddock melt - a good fish sandwich. Fried haddock with cheese, lettuce and tomato, on a burger bun. Good fries and slaw too. Our dessert was a blueberry bread pudding. A little too dense, and it wasn't warmed all the way through, but it did have good blueberry flavor and wasn't too sweet. We really liked that Lynne stopped by all the tables to check on everyone, even with her doing so much cooking! She was a great lady that really seemed to care about her product. Lucky detour for us!

We had the lobster BLT sandwich....it was packed full of fresh maine lobsta and amazing! We went during the lobster fest and at the end of lunch time. The server was friendly and still gave great service after what must have been a grueling day.
(4)Ken M.
I'll agree with Joanna that waiting an hour for food after sitting down is absolutely unacceptable, but also that the food is delicious. I had probably a half pound of crab in my omelette. The homemade bread is a great touch. Make sure you specify that you want the homemade so you don't get store bought (they have multiple varieties of each for some reason). Prices are a little high for Rockland, but pretty much worth it for the quality of food that you get. I'll also note that the prices on some of the menus are not correct, they are actually higher. The bathroom also wasn't as clean as it could have been.
(3)Kel S.
In the lobster roll challenge of 2012, this lobster roll does the trick. For the price, $17, you get a decent amount of meat. It also comes with a buttered hot dog bun and cole slaw. The wait to pay (we ordered ahead to take out) was a bit long, as they were closing and don't have a dedicated line for the credit card machine. But it was not too shabby.
(4)Tina D.
Great service... very quick. Tasty sandwiches and salads in downtown Rockland.
(4)Chad W.
Had the biggest lobster and bacon three piece of homemade bread masterpiece. You might of seen this sandwich on Bobby Flay challenge. Well it was delicious and would be a tough sandwich to beat. This is a gotoo.
(4)Nigel K.
AWESOME lobster sandwich, I'm a big guy and had to split it with my wife. Everyone should go here when you go to Rockland Ma
(5)Anne S.
Brass Compass was the first place we stopped in Maine and we had an awesome meal! Never having been to Maine before, I had to have a lobster roll and I was definitely not disappointed! The clam chowder was really good too. The service was nice, quick and friendly. I'd definitely visit again while in the area!
(4)Gabby C.
My family ate here the other day. Service was not good. They were out of a lot of drinks. Place was not clean and outdated. Lobster roll was small, expensive and undercooked. Hand-cut fries tasted like they were cooked in old oil.
(2)Benjamin C.
Grubby, open kitchen area with overflowing trash can visible from my table, server in flip flops with long hair not tied back, slow service, a glass display case filled with layers of eggs, several broken and leaking..... first impression not good. My burned burger and stale bun stacked with wilted lettuce and an orange and crunchy tomato was not good, but at least it was really expensive! My wife had the fabled lobster club. It's not a miracle. Who cares about the bobby flay hype. It's just lobster meat in a sandwich. You can buy a lobster for less than a pound of good bacon now. Why the crazy stupid price? Places like this are very over rated. But tourists will rate anything with lobster in it with at least four stars.
(1)Dexter M.
This quaint diner had the small town feel and hospitality I had not seen in many of the other restaurants here in Rockland. The decor was very nautical and filled with breathtaking photographs of Maine. The owners also run Archer's which we ate last night and also feature the "king of clubs" sandwich featured on "Bobby Flay's Throw down", having eaten it last night And not being impressed, I opted for the lobster roll and my gf had the blackened haddock Reuben. Both came out quickly and were very good. The lobster roll was fresh, simple, and delicious. Much better than Rockland Cafe's. The Reuben was zesty very pleasing. For dessert we shared one of their huge whoopy pies which was incredible. The cake was super fresh and soft yet slightly crisp on the outside, simply perfect.

We had the pleasure of meeting Lynn at the inn we were staying during happy hour this past weekend. Clearly, after hearing her victorious story over Bobby Flay, we had to stop by. We had brunch at the Brass Compass yesterday - it was DIVINE! My boyfriend got the throwdown winning lobster club sandwich and I had the lobstah roll. The King of Clubs (I think that's what it's called) was huge and looked extremely appetizing. My boyfriend inhaled it raving about the home baked white bread. My lobster roll was DELICIOUS, too. We could not believe how light and crispy and amazingly perfect the onion rings were - so sweet and crunchy and just ideal! I had the clam chowder (yum), he had the shrimp stew or chowder (yum). We hope to come back to Rockland soon and when we do, we're hitting Lynn's spot up first thing on the drive in!
(5)Nicholas O.
The Brass reminds me of Ihops slogan, "come hungry, leave happy." Being a local I've had or sampled almost every dish on the menu. The more dishes I try, the harder it is to decide what to order next time! This is not five star dining, nor is it any cafe on the street. It is a balanced medium where seafood and a little extra love in every dish make this the favorite cafe of many locals, including myself. Good size portions and reasonable prices. Favorites are The Mexican omelet for breakfast (huge portion), and the Lobster club for lunch.
(5)Darlene G.
Best Lobster Club Ever !!!! The wait staff was awesome very pleasant !!!! Can't wait to get back there !!!! :)
(5)Albert M.
I will be short and sweet. This place has one of the best and most inventive sandwiches in the world. The lobster club. We all know and adore the club. Triple decker held together by toothpicks. Bread, meat, lettuce, tomato, lettuce, and bacon. Imagine the meat is not the traditional turkey we normally find on a club sandwich, but a pound of lobster......thus sandwich heaven!!!!
(5)Jacob S.
I'm not just a fan of the brass compass, I'm a Massive fan, Grab a lobster club or a giant breakfast!!! you can't go wrong at the compass!
(5)Lindsey J.
We weren't looking for an expensive restaurant when we stumbled upon this place; we just wanted a place were we could let my nieces run about. The Brass Compass Cafe fit the bill. It has outdoor seating on a small square on the corner of Park and Main streets. On the day we went (a sunny summer Saturday), indeed it was. There were almost no people inside. The food includes the Maine Seafood Standards (lobster roll, crab cakes, seafood salads, burgers, and sandwiches), but they also carry a dinner menu that is surprising upscale for a place that looks like a dumpy local lunch diner (salmon steak is just an example). The quality of the food is 3 stars at best and is probably the weakest point of this restaurant. However, you could really eat much worse for the money. Giving the once over to the clientele, this is more of a locals' place than a tourist trap, and the meals are priced accordingly (the most expensive dinner entree was $14 and most ranged from $7-9). The patio seating is at a premium, but I can imagine that there will always be ample seating inside. Beware, they do not serve alcohol on the patio due to open container laws. The location is prime but you could easily over look this place as it is unassuming. I would think it would be a good place for people on a budget, families with kids, or someone who just wants a local place to eat.
(4)Ron S.
The best omelets in the Mid-Coast area!! Period!
(5)Maggi B.
Best. Diner. Ever. This is a staple for breakfast in the midcoast and when I was pregnant, all I craved were bacon cheeseburgers from the Brass Compass. The food is typical diner food with the addition of some tasty seafood entrees - but I stick to the cheeseburgers. Worth every penny ...plus, the owner and waitstaff are no nonsense - but sweet as hell.
(5)Jan M.
Three of us ate here on the last day of the Maine Lobster Festival, at the recommendation of a friend. It was packed, and the servers were rushed. I had the lobster club, friend S had the same but without bacon, and friend C had soup. I thought that the bacon overpowered the lobster. Friend S said that's why she ordered it without bacon. Friend C doesn't eat lobster but enjoyed her soup. We thought it was overpriced and not exceptional in any way. Although, it was a hot day, there is no A/C, and it was very crowded.
(3)Laika W.
Four and a half barks. Great place. The lobster club won the Bobby Flay smackdown, and for good reason. Superbly balanced with the bacon, and fresh fresh fresh. The blackened haddock club was excellent too if you have overdosed on lobster. I even ate the fries, which I rarely do. Sensible prices, nice service, and many other great entrees in a slightly above diner atmosphere. I will be back!
(4)BJ C.
My favorite place to eat breakfast each time I visit home, the last morning.
(4)Jana L.
Ate here twice on holiday last week. 1. Lobster roll for lunch. Delicious. Fresh lobster meat tossed lightly in just the right amount of mayo and quite a generous portion compared to many other local places. 2. Crab cake eggs Benedict for breakfast. Excellent. A lot of crab and quite heavy with the Benedict sauce and breakfast spuds! My recommendation is to pan sear the crabcakes in less oil or butter and make them slightly smaller so they fit into the english muffin. It was a lot of food and slightly greasy. But still tasty and I managed to eat 75%! Casual atmosphere, friendly staff and be sure to try their ginormous Whoopie pies.. Good for sharing!
(4)Curly H.
Pros: Good food, ambience. Cons: Not open for dinner, or on Mondays. Being fans of the Food Network, we didn't have to think twice about trying a restaurant that was on Bobby Flay's Throwdown. Our lunch was - what else - the Lobster Club. We decided to split the sandwich - definitely a wise choice, given its "market price". We were unprepared for the shear amount of lobster that they were able to pack into the sandwich, and we both left the table stuffed for a decent price. It gets a tie for the best lobster 'sandwich' I've ever had - with Red's Eats of Wiscasset. In all, if you ever have fantasized about lobster and bacon, this is the place to go.
(5)Krystle D.
If you're the odd girl out and all your friends like seafood except you, what do you order? The all American berry french toast--soooo good. Coffee is great here too!!!
(5)Joel B.
Stopped in here as one of the local places to get lobster and some beers. Whole group enjoyed their meals. Split between lobster rolls and lobster club. Very generous amount of lobster with our lunch. Shipyard Summer Ale hits the spot after flight and drive here. Server super pleasant. Would come here again for another meal.
(4)Eilleen B.
Absolutely horrible service. Would not recommend this to anyone. Bad reflection of the food network and Bobby Flay. No stars if I could do it.
(1)Anne A.
The thing to order is the lobster club sandwich. The owner beat out Bobby Flay on the Food Network for best lobster sandwich. Huge, hearty bursting with flavor. I shared it with two of my cousins and we devoured it!
(5)Andy L.
A great breakfast at a great price. Very friendly local gentleman was sitting beside us and stuck up a conversation. Introduced us to the owner who thanked us for coming in. Wife loved her French toast. I was very happy with my meat lovers scramble and completely stuffed when we left. A very welcoming place with really good food.
(4)Dona S.
I stopped at The Brass Compass Restaurant for lunch and was not disappointed by the comforting atmosphere and wonderful food. I ordered the lobster roll which came with French fries and homemade coleslaw. The lobster roll was one of my favorites in Maine, and the portion of lobster was very very generous. The decor was wonderfully cozy and made me feel right at home. The people there were so nice and helpful in many ways. I also went another day for a fried haddock lunch which was delicious. Definitely a restaurant to dine at when in Maine. Dona S.
(4)Jae E.
Well located, easy to find, in walking distance to public landing and lighthouse museum. All female staff, slinging bacon and eggs and potatoes, pancakes and sausage and gravy. There were clearly regulars, and although the decor and carpet were old, the place was nice. Indoor and outdoor seating makes for plenty of space. Fruit salad was a mix of canned and fresh, and pancakes were made from Costco-sized boxes of Aunt Jemima mix, but muffins and pies looked scratch made, and there was a good selection of fresh, whole grain breads and fresh veggies.
(3)Jenny B.
If I had to chose my last meal would be here! Onion strings, clam chowder (best I had in Maine), and the Lobster Club! It was the best sandwich I have ever had!
(5)Frederick W.
This place is so over-rated simply because Lynn beat Bobby Flay in Food Network's throwdown with her Kick-A lobster sandwich and gets popularity ever since. The food is, I must disappointed to say, no longer keep the standard as-is. The lobster sandwich was not even fresh from what I can taste. Fries soggy and overly fried. Make sure you go to Archer's on the Pier. Better ambiance, nice location and with Lynn herself be there. Maybe pricey but at least worth the price.
(2)Hannah C.
I've been eating for 29 years now so if there's one thing I know, it's sandwiches. I have found the BEST sandwich I have EVER had in my life at The Brass Compass. It's the lobster club! A 1.25 pound lobster, 3 slices of homemade bread, lettuce, tomatoe and bacon....holy crap it's delicious! It seems expensive but it's actually more food then you'd get ordering just the lobster roll and it's amazing. But seriously, only order it if you're ready to except the fact that you'll never have another sandwich as good as that one.
(5)John E.
The lobster club was very tasty, as were the fried clams. Another place that is not in the uppermost echelon, but certainly above average.
