If $5 sounds expensive to you for a drink that contains no alcohol, you owe it yourself to try one of Vena's virgin creations, which run the gamut from fruity to chocolaty to herbaceous to spicy and everything in between. I promise you won't be disappointed, and even if you are, don't fret, they're getting a liquor license soon.

This is such a great place! A cute shop with a soda fountain in the back. We had the Chloe Cream Soda. It was probably the best egg cream we ever had. The service was great and the bathrooms were immaculate. Wish I had more time to check out more sodas in this cute shop!!

Holy mackerel! This place is amazing! I have never encountered anything like it. A bar based on non-alcoholic drinks that actually taste like top notch cocktails. I loved it! I wish there were more places like this. As a former bartender, the proprietor is at the top of his game and is a genuine talent. It was fantastic to be able to have "cocktail hour" with the kids and then continue on to do other things (you can add booze after 1700.) I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland.

He taught us about our cocktails while constructing them and had us taste the components along the way. I love having this in Portland! So fun! The house sodas/mocktails are perfect afternoon treat. He has the best bitters selection I've ever seen and is more than willing to let you try anything. As far as bar equipment the shop has a lot of quality items; A bit overpriced but as they should be to keep up with overhead. Check it out!

Delicious concoctions and SUPER nice and friendly people. We had a couple of drinks and then wanted to buy bitters, so the bartender/owner (I think his name is Steve?) gave us some great advice and let us sample a few different options. We had no idea how good this place would be - just walked in to quench our thirst.

I first went here the summer of '14 and fell in love. Now every visit to Maine requires a stop here. Their drinks are a flavorful experience. I'm a huge fan of the blood orange cordial and the mint ginger julep. With each visit, I've found their popularity growing, which great for them, but the last time they were quiet inundated with customers. A fantastic problem for a small business to have. Hopefully they add more staff or even change the seating around a bit to accommodate customers. I love this place. Prices are great, experience and décor are outstanding.

Haters gon hate. We walked past this place and noticed the awesome barware in the window, we didn't even know they served beverages in back. They have a really vast selection of vintages glassware, unique bitters, drink mixes, and fun things (banana flask anyone?) The staff is really nice, they told us we could try any bitters in the back, we ordered a couple of drinks. The 3 Berry Strew? drink contained drinking vinegars and soda. Watching the young beverage tender make the drink I was confused when he poured maybe 2 ounces of mixture into a mason jar and filled it with ice and soda water, I was ready to taste a bland bubbly fruit essence...Instead it was a perfectly refreshing sweet and tangy soda pop! really delicious. I think this place is 1 shot of spirit away from being one of the best bars around, the concepts they learn here, could be applied to any drink menu at any bar, anywhere. It was a really cool experiences. Throw 2 bucks and get one of their utlra vinegary spicy fire shots, it'll clear you up.

First of all I love Portland and this wonderful place fits right in with this terrific city. I no longer drink alcohol and they offer mock tails which are delicious without alcohol. I enjoyed the snow ball mock tail so much I wanted to lick the glass. The folks working in the store gave us a little education concerning the use of bitters and all natural ingredients in their drinks. If anyone is planning on visiting Portland stop in for a treat and try something totally different.

I love the concept of this place but I was disappointed by the product themselves. It has so much promise and is really inventive but the drinks I had were just ok. I went with the Blueberry Cream Soda, and Ginger Fizz and they tasted better on the menu than in the glass.

This place is great. Totally different than other bars in town, its owner and staff pride themselves on the chemistry and origins of cocktails. Not sure which of the 50 offerings on the drink menu menu you'd like to try? Tell them and they'll throw something together for your mood. They even offer a ton of equally fun mocktails for those who are too young or chose to not imbibe. Super nice and interested in your experience, this mixology pub is not to be missed. On your way in or out enjoy their super eclectic collection of bar supplies and elixirs they sell in their store to try at home. The only ding is for this place was the '80s music. Really? This Mid-century modern vibe screams for Sinatra, not Fine Young Cannibals. Just sayin. Even so, I will be back. If for no other reason than to try more food and drinks because it's gonna take a few visits to run out of new tasty options!

Wonderful little find that we stumbled on while walking around Portland. Johanna, the owner, was extremely friendly and knowledgable about the wide variety of cocktail ingredients. She was helpful in recommending a few products upon request and you are even able to sample any of the bitters or items you are interested in purchasing at the bar. The bar has a range of mocktails during the day, and they serve mixed drinks at night which we are planning on trying one night!

Very refreshing soda shop. You really don't see places like this anymore and after a few hours of walking up and down the streets this was a great place for a refreshing soda. We had the strawberry mint and ginger julep. The ginger soda had a strong bite unlike any ginger ale I have ever had. A strong flavor made with fresh ingredients. The strawberry mint soda was delicious with ground up mint leaves adding spice to a lightly sweetened strawberry flavor. Great shop with a good amount of traffic coming in and out. Oddly large bathroom lol. Clean and welcoming. Great place!

Get in here for a cocktail before people catch on!! Last I checked, they were only serving alcoholic drinks on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings but make it a priority if you're after an interesting cocktail with bartenders passionate and enthusiastic about what they're making for you. The place itself is all retail related in the front, and the bar is accessed by entering and going up a small flight of stairs so it's a bit hidden from view when you're just walking past, though I guess with the amount of articles coming out recently, the secret is probably out. There has been a lot more emphasis on the craft cocktail in general in Portland lately, but what I liked so much about Vena's was that there was no pretension, no prima donna bartenders, just people that are having fun embracing the creativity and excitement of crafting interesting drinks. One of the owners, Steve, I believe, was quick to answer any questions and would give me a dash of a particular bitter or syrup to denote the difference in flavor in certain drinks. I don't claim to be an expert in mixology, but I tried some really interesting drinks here and had a blast doing it!

Very cool and unique place to pop in for a sip and then some. There are a lot of cool bar ware items available for those who like to mix at home and then there's also a really cool soda shop with more than 20 different funky (and normal) concoctions available to sip on site or take to walk. A unique concept executed unevenly. The owner of Vena's will likely be waiting for you with a pitcher of soda ready to give you a free sample when you walk in. You might ask her questions about the place: How she came up with the idea; if there are other places like it, and she'll happily talk to you about it. You might go up the short flight of stairs and saddle up to the ol' fashioned bar and choose on the delicious-sounding sodas from the chalkboard menu and watch the bartender go through the dance of crafting your individual drink before your eyes, and when you drink it, chances are it will be as delicious as you'd hoped. That's everything that's right about Vena's. Here's what's wrong: 1. The time between when you order that delicious-sounding drink and get it in your hands can be way, way too long. I was waiting for what felt like forever for my soda there. By the time I got mine, the other people I had come with had finished theirs. 2. Cost. A small soda there is somewhere around $5 (I'll check the exact price and update this review later). It's a premium product, but for that price I'm not becoming a regular any time soon. 3. The third problem with Vena's is not on the consumer end of things, but a concern I have for them as a business: The soda bar area takes up maybe 1/3 of the space. The other 2/3rds of it are dedicated to mixology gear, syrups, sauces, local food goods, and other stuff that, for me, confuses the aim of the business, and they're paying rent on all that space. I can't help but feel like they found a great location with a bar that was too big for them and are occupying most of it with filler so it's not empty. It also remains to be seen how it fares in the winter when the summer tourists are gone. I love the idea of a soda bar. What an innocent and fun thing! I hope they do well, but I'm worried that for all the reasons above, Vena's Fizz House will just fizzle out (I'M SORRY).

This has become a regular stop for us on Sunday after brunch. The young lady at the front is always friendly and welcoming! The boys behind the counter are equally nice and accommodating with answering questions about the beverages. The chocolate pomegranate soda is fantastic. Of the slushies, so far my favorite is the ginger citrus with blackberry! Not a super sweet flavor, more subtle. Seems like the type of place that should have a cozy nook with board games. A nice modern spin on a soda shop. I'd recommend for any age group!

This is such a cute concept that we wanted to love-- however, the delivery and product left a bit to be desired. Drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive to our table, and did not come to our specifications (the extra sweet drink arrived with half the sweetener, and the less sweet drink arrived with twice the syrup). The teenagers working in this place seemed a bit frazzled-- which may have been part of the problem. On top of all this, the bar area was blazing hot. Bring in the air conditioner already! Though the concept and delivery is a bit of a 'miss,' we found the owner and staff to be generally very pleasant and wish them very well as they tweak their concept. Consider adding sandwiches and real cocktails to the menu-- this seems like much more of a sustainable model.

What a gem! Not only was the fizzy drink I had delicious, the owner/concoction mixer/owner was engaging. This place puts the meaning in 'service with a smile'. My youngest son and I ventured in on a whim as we walked through the Old Port today. We both left happy that we did. Riley had the Bangladesh Express mocktail, which he chose for one of its ingredients: ghost pepper. He described it as smooth and surprisingly good, with a spicy after taste. My Blackberry Coconut was light and refreshing; completely enjoyable. Worth the $5 price tags :) Today was the first of what I hope are many visits to this unique, somewhat throwback-ish establishment.

I could not rave enough about Vena's Fizz House!! We stopped in on a whim because we heard they sold bar tools, and we've been building up quite a collection. The first half of the store is more bar tools and bitters/mixes than you could ever imagine. There were vintage glasses, ice cub trays, specialty shakers, and shelves upon shelves of bitters, syrups, and mixes. The owner was extremely helpful and even let us try some of the bitters that we were unfamiliar with. The second part of the store was a soda bar with an adorable chalkboard menu on the wall. Every drink was a mocktail or some sort, and everything sounded really good. I chose the lemon basil soda, and my fiance chose the lavender basil drink. They were served in cocktail glasses, and based on how the drinks were made, you would never know they were virgin drinks. The young bartenders were skilled in making the drinks, and were very knowledgeable about the bitters and flavors that they were serving. They were also incredibly friendly. They chatted with us the entire time, which is a rare experience at a real bar. I cannot believe this place does not exist in every major city. If this place existed in San Francisco, I would definitely go all of the time. We had so much fun hanging out at Vena's Fizz House and I recommend that EVERYONE go sit at the bar and have a delicious drink!

This is my new favorite place in Portland! I was slightly overwhelmed with their menu only because it's huge, all the drinks are customizable and most sounds amazing....which for an indecisive person, it would take me until the bar closed to finally make up my mind. After briefly chatting with the 2 super friendly women manning the bar I was steered in the right direction and chose a few drinks that were both amazing. The staff is knowledgable and is more than willing to go into detail about where each component of each drink is made, how it's made and their favorite customizable additions. I'm excited to go back and try more of their concoctions. I will also forever be dreaming about love potion #9. I got mine with grey goose, my cousin added tequila and we both added a touch of extra ghost pepper. My cousin loved it so much she bought a bottle of the ghost pepper. It's definitely going to blow the socks off of our guests at our next dinner party! Oh did I mention they also have a shop that sells all of the bitters, mixers, bar equipment and even the gorgeous eclectic glassware they use?! Yup slightly hesitant on posting this review because I really don't want it to get crowded and busy every night of the week.....but.....it's eventually gonna get out that this place is awesome. I would have stayed there all night if I didn't have to be a responsible adult. There's always tomorrow

What a cute place! The front is a store selling everything from banana-shaped flasks to various drinking glasses and bitters. The bar is upstairs and offers a variety of natural sodas mixed on the spot. I tried the Bangladesh Express. It had coconut, blood orange, lime, cardamom and ghost pepper. Interesting flavors and a kick from the pepper. I love the idea of this place. Fun and flavorful drinks without alcohol. Worth checking out when in the Old Port.

Here are all the drinks I can buy in Portland for $5: - Allagash White (with an orange slice) at nearly every bar in town - An incredibly thick smoothie at Maine Squeeze - Kombucha at Hannaford, Whole Foods, Urban Farm Fermentory (or anywhere that carries UFF) - A Vietnamese coffee at Yordprom - A Bloody Mary at multiple locations throughout the city (i.e. Boru's or Local 188) - 2 pints of Pumpkinhead across the street at Dock Fore Those are all SPECTACULAR beverages for a fiver. So, if your company rolls into town and also wants to join the "drinks for an Abe Lincoln" game, they have to be pretty extraordinary. And Vena's Fizz House, in my opinion, just falls flat here. We came on a Monday afternoon and there was an incredibly informative young man working the front room. He gave us samples of a new drink they were testing, and talked to us about it's health benefits. Although, once we told him we knew how awesome apple cider vinegar was for the body, he looked visibly taken aback like we had interrupted his rehearsed speech. So, instead of improvising, he continued to explain to us what apple cider vinegar is and how it's great for our systems. We thanked him and went up the stairs to the soda bar. It's definitely a gorgeous space, and I love the concept of a "happy hour" with their mocktails/soda creations being a dollar cheaper. I think if I was ten or twelve years younger, I would appreciate it! But, it just wasn't for me now. The young man working the soda bar was supremely disinterested in working. He was leaned over the bar working on a crossword or something. Now, I'm totally cool with people entertaining themselves or staying busy on slow days (heck, I used to do it when I was a brewery tour giver!), but when customers come in - you drop EVERYTHING and give them your undivided attention until it's appropriate to let them be. When we went up to the bar, the young man barely looked at us. "For here or to go?" We told him to go, then asked him to go through the menu a little bit for us. He did - and that's when he came a little more to life. Once his speech was over though, like a wind-up toy, he just sort of slumped back over. "What would you get?" I asked (I always ask this at new places). "I don't know," he responded. "You don't know what you would get if you were drinking a soda here?" I prompted him. "Oh, well, I usually get the coffee soda with mocha... that means it's with chocolate." The boyo with me started snickering. "Oh?" I said, "Guess we'll take one of those crazy mocha concotions." The young man prepared our drink, handed it to us, and went back to his crossword. "Did you want money for this?" I asked playfully since he never charged me. "Oh, yeah, right. Haha," was his lackluster response. We left a fiver on the counter top and left. When we got outside, I took a big sip of the drink... and immediately passed it off to my partner to finish. It wasn't very carbonated, and it had a bit of an awkward, unexpected sour tang to it. The coffee and chocolate flavor were pretty underwhelming, too. All in all, the drink reminded me of an iced coffee "second drink" (y'know, when you've finished your beverage but let the ice melt down so it creates a watery "second drink" within the first drink). I like Vena'z Fizz House! I do! It appeals, like I said, to the teenager in me. The girl who was spending her every weekend hanging out in the Old Port with friends spending her disposable cash on whatever she wanted. But now, when I have to pick and choose what I splurge on... my precious five dollars just seems better suited for me now somewhere else.

$5 mixed fizz drinks! The soda shop is quite a unique experience, and this one sells an awesome variety of bitters and homemade extracts. There's a fizz bar at the back and a daily selection of sodas! We ended up ordering a large ginger and aloe fizz which was delicious, super tangy, and a nice heat was provided by the ginger. They had a large variety of other drinks, but we couldnt stay longer. I would recommend trying the meadow mocktail - a lavender, grapefruit summery concoction if you have time to stick around. The barristas are super friendly and this was a sweet first experience at fizz houses. Happy eating!

A Fizz House?! I thought these things only existed in Dr. Suess books and maybe...just maybe --- some faraway dreamland of a nine year old; nope it's real, awesome and delicious. So glad we checked this place out. The owner owns this business with his wife and they are true craftspeople in making pop (or do they call it soda in Maine?). None of that high-fructose corn syrup junk; you get some real refreshing flavors here. You can order some of this "fizz" up at the bar and they'll make it for you, similar as if they were making a cocktail (only there's no alcohol involved). There are LOTS of choices and it can be overwhelming (my wife took a full 15 minutes to decide), but I'm convinced there's no wrong choice. Truth be told, I don't remember what I ordered exactly...but let's see: it had basil, strawberries and it was superbly refreshing. The fizz is served in a mason jar and you can also buy popcorn (we didn't, but I noticed some people had some). There's a back part to the store full of books and different gifts for the craft-making aficionado. This was a cool and well executed concept -- if you're looking for a quick refreshing drink, be sure to skip on the Coke and seek this out. Who says there's not a craft to making pop?

I can't decide if I legitimately loved it or if I'm still blinded by my initial reaction to the concept / fact that it exists. The store has the biggest variety of bitters, drink mixes, etc that I've ever seen in one place. It was hard to narrow down the options to one thing I could reasonably put in my suitcase for the haul back to New York, but somehow I managed to settle on a spicy ginger syrup. Sorry, hibiscus syrups. Maybe next time. I'll admit the bar area was a bit of a head-scratcher. I don't want to sit around a bar drinking not-alcohol and, outside of Mardi Gras, it is weird to have to jockey for a bartender's attention to get a drink in a 'to go cup.' I might have minded this less if the far more interesting-sounding "mocktails" were available to go but the menu plainly said they were not, so I opted for the 'dim and stormy' - fortunately, it was super refreshing and full of zesty fresh ginger.

What a fun destination! Exciting drinks, both alcoholic and non alcoholic: perfect for kids and parents. I enjoyed the Blackberry Coconut drink: think of a tropical, frothy fruit soda. It was fun to watch them make, but very messy. This would be a great place for a kid's birthday party, or maybe a baby or bridal shower. Minus points for the disarray. Behind the bar was not organized at all. It seemed like the bartenders couldn't find a lot of things. Bonus points for the awesome vintage barware up for purchase!

The ladies at Vena's are awesome, knowledgeable and friendly. It was around 6PM when we entered so it was very quite. They greeted us very warmly and immediately start chatting. They prepared 2 delicious cocktails, one gin based and one tequila. The second round was even more cool: as they were testing some new cocktails, they prepared us something outside the menu, and it was a success. They go outside the menu with no problem and like to experiment. We ended up wondering around the lower level where they have a small shop, and bought a cocktail book and a bottle of Fire Cider, which we took back home and will keep me company during the cold winter. I really hope to go back one day soon! If only DC had a place like this..

What a great concept! It's not only a shop that sells all kinds of cocktail and soda paraphernalia, but a non-alcoholic soda bar upstairs. Two "bartenders" helped us decide from a list of a dozen or more freshly made sodas - we tried the strawberry basil soda as well as the grapefruit agave. Both were super tasty and unique. This seems like a great place to bring kids, especially teens, to have a cold, handmade soda in a hip environment.

This place is such a winner. The ginger fizz I had was the best ginger soda ever. The fire-cider was an interesting mix of hot and horseradishy, pretty tasty and clears out the sinuses. The bits of other drinks I tried were good, too. My dining companions were way into the ghost pepper bitters; there were a lot of sweet-and-spicy options. I didn't sample any of the cocktails, but I'll have to next time, the menu seemed impressive. Plus the store of cocktail books and accouterments out front was pretty amazing. As a visitor to Portland, this place is definitely on my list of reasons to come back.

Vena's is, hands down, one of my favorite businesses in Portland. Even though it's a pretty small shop, I could spend hours browsing the huge selection of bitters, shrubs, tinctures, shakers and other mixology accessories. I've picked up some fabulous cocktail additions here including angostora bitter sugar cubes, gin infusion sets (great for gifts!), and shrub sampler packs. Now that the upstairs soda shop has a liquor license, it's a total game changer. On my last visit, my fiance had some kind of cherry vanilla phosphate cocktail and I enjoyed a bourbon drink with mixed berry shrub. The owner (I wish I could remember his name) is absolutely fantastic. Wish it was closer but I'll gladly travel!

This has to be one of my favorite Portland finds. This place spans an awesome retail location, apothecary of sorts, and bar. The retail location features the largest (by far) selection of bitters and drink mixing agents I've seen in store. Additionally, they sell a ton of cute and hard to find mixing accessories. The upstairs features a bar that serves up homemade sodas with bitters, mashes and shrubs (tart/vinegar syrups). These are made Virgin up until 430-500 when the booze comes out. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable and he and his bartenders mix up a variety of cocktails from their boozy menu. They're great at taking requests and mixing up something special, or doctoring up a drink from the "virgin" menu. We keep coming back here for a reason, the amazing selection in their retail section, the devious drinks, the fact that they source and incorporate a large array of local goods, and the people, they're so nice and helpful!

This seems like a perfect thing to have at the perfect time, in a great city. I didn't actually drink anything while I was there, but I loved the selection of (over 100!) bitters and everything else, pretty well organized but still a little rough and tumble so you can root around and come across unexpected things... I bought a "just add alcohol" mason jar full of stuff, which could easily be made DIY but it's so well marketed here, I couldn't help myself. It also inspired me to buy my own mini silicone ice cube trays to make bitters sugar cubes!

I was in need of a refreshing beverage after wandering through Portland. Vena's rose up out of the sidewalk as if by a miracle. The entire staff was extremely welcoming and helpful. The drinks were light and perfect! I ordered the Ginger Lime drink from the no added sugar menu. It was the perfect drink if you like the zip of lime (I do!). The boy had a Strawberry Basil Seltzer (also from the no added sugar menu). It was subtle and not at all sweet and exactly what we were looking for. We would absolutely go back!

I am so psyched about this place. We finally popped in and headed right up to the bar while the woman at the downstairs register chatted with customers. There was a group of maybe 4 ladies together who had already ordered drinks, but the man behind the counter (who I believe may be one of the owners?) was quick to let us know there were samples of habanero hot chocolate (which was heavenly!). After a couple minutes of perusing the menu he came over to chat with us and gave us a couple more samples of some of the syrups -- also delicious. We ordered and sat down, and the woman from the front register made a point to come up and greet us personally, and brought us a bowl of complimentary snacks. My only complaint was that the bartender was a bit more into being super showy with making the drinks and chatting with everyone which, while great, slowed down the production line like crazy. It took us at least 10 minutes to get two very basic sodas. I appreciate people taking their time and crafting something awesome, but come on now. But the sodas were DELICIOUS and the excitement and genuine kindness of the two of them was really the cherry on top. Before leaving we perused the selection of bar goodies and syrups, tonics, etc, downstairs... very cool place!

I love the concept of this place, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. I was indecisive, so they took the time to actually go through the options on the menu to explain what things were (some of the names are pretty vague). I got the raspberry mint, which was fantastic and refreshing. My husband got the blackberry cream soda, which was ok - I thought it was sort of thick, but it wasn't bad. The sodas are a little pricy, though I do understand the ingredients are fresh and they make everything from scratch, but $5 for a soda is a bit steep. Great for a fun stop on vacation, but not sure I would make a habit of frequenting this place if I lived here.

Love this place! I've been here twice now with my fiancé and you never know what you might find. We first stopped here hoping to find a unique gift for my fiancé's father who enjoys a good margarita. We know he loves spicy margaritas, particularly ones filled with hot peppers or spicy seasonings. While at the Fizz House, we purchased an infuser filled with spicy peppers you could use to infuse any type of alcohol. Perfect! Another thing we bought from them was a bottle of handmade margarita mix produced in Vermont. Just recently we went back and tried out their soda bar, definitely a win-win as their all natural soda is awesome! After coming here two times now, this is a great place to come to purchase any bar related items. Their soda bar even has a happy hour so you can sip on a "mock tail" for cheap. This is the only place in Portland (that I know of) that even has a soda bar!

Curiosity got the best of me one night and I headed over here during an impromtu "bar" crawl. As you enter, you are engulfed by a mixture of Portland guides and bartending staples. Heading further into the shop, you can take a left or a right. Take the right and you end up in the land of bitters, coktail mixers, recipe books and collectible glassware. Take the left and you end up at the "bar". I took both and was sufficiently satisfied with my indecision. At the bar they have a creative menu of mock-tails and sodas. All of which you can add a shot or two of the liquor of your choosing. The bartender is also happy to show you a list of alcoholic beverages on special or to guide you to one of their favorites. i always love when bartenders make suggestions because, I mean, they know their way around a drink or too. I ended up with the Bangledesh Express which boasted that it was comprised of coconut creme and ghost peppers. Both of which I am a huge fan of. The drink was interesting and fun! I'll happily return to try out many of their other drink options!

What a great find in Portland! We happened upon this place while exploring the walkable historic area. My wife is pregnant and welcomed the idea of a mocktail. At first I assumed this would be a cheesy place to get artificially flavored "homeade" sodas. I could not have been more wrong. They made me an amazing ginger drink with fresh ginger, mint, ghost pepper, Jamaican bitters and more. My wife also had one of the ginger drinks and felt like it eased some of the discomfort she was having in her pregnancy. We were not there in the evening when they offer alcohol in their drinks, but I have to think they would make some of the best cocktails around.

Be warned: mixology applies to sodas, too, and the bar area was full of kids when we were there.

The atmosphere is very laid back with staff that is extremely friendly and willing to answer questions about their drinks. While I imagine that families with children are the target market, I think that adults may find that this place is worth stopping at for a cold afternoon treat, especially while the sun is still out.

What a gem! Not only was the fizzy drink I had delicious, the owner/concoction mixer/owner was engaging. This place puts the meaning in 'service with a smile'. My youngest son and I ventured in on a whim as we walked through the Old Port today. We both left happy that we did. Riley had the Bangladesh Express mocktail, which he chose for one of its ingredients: ghost pepper. He described it as smooth and surprisingly good, with a spicy after taste. My Blackberry Coconut was light and refreshing; completely enjoyable. Worth the $5 price tags :) Today was the first of what I hope are many visits to this unique, somewhat throwback-ish establishment.

I could not rave enough about Vena's Fizz House!! We stopped in on a whim because we heard they sold bar tools, and we've been building up quite a collection. The first half of the store is more bar tools and bitters/mixes than you could ever imagine. There were vintage glasses, ice cub trays, specialty shakers, and shelves upon shelves of bitters, syrups, and mixes. The owner was extremely helpful and even let us try some of the bitters that we were unfamiliar with. The second part of the store was a soda bar with an adorable chalkboard menu on the wall. Every drink was a mocktail or some sort, and everything sounded really good. I chose the lemon basil soda, and my fiance chose the lavender basil drink. They were served in cocktail glasses, and based on how the drinks were made, you would never know they were virgin drinks. The young bartenders were skilled in making the drinks, and were very knowledgeable about the bitters and flavors that they were serving. They were also incredibly friendly. They chatted with us the entire time, which is a rare experience at a real bar. I cannot believe this place does not exist in every major city. If this place existed in San Francisco, I would definitely go all of the time. We had so much fun hanging out at Vena's Fizz House and I recommend that EVERYONE go sit at the bar and have a delicious drink!

This is my new favorite place in Portland! I was slightly overwhelmed with their menu only because it's huge, all the drinks are customizable and most sounds amazing....which for an indecisive person, it would take me until the bar closed to finally make up my mind. After briefly chatting with the 2 super friendly women manning the bar I was steered in the right direction and chose a few drinks that were both amazing. The staff is knowledgable and is more than willing to go into detail about where each component of each drink is made, how it's made and their favorite customizable additions. I'm excited to go back and try more of their concoctions. I will also forever be dreaming about love potion #9. I got mine with grey goose, my cousin added tequila and we both added a touch of extra ghost pepper. My cousin loved it so much she bought a bottle of the ghost pepper. It's definitely going to blow the socks off of our guests at our next dinner party! Oh did I mention they also have a shop that sells all of the bitters, mixers, bar equipment and even the gorgeous eclectic glassware they use?! Yup slightly hesitant on posting this review because I really don't want it to get crowded and busy every night of the week.....but.....it's eventually gonna get out that this place is awesome. If $5 sounds expensive to you for a drink that contains no alcohol, you owe it yourself to try one of Vena's virgin creations, which run the gamut from fruity to chocolaty to herbaceous to spicy and everything in between. I promise you won't be disappointed, and even if you are, don't fret, they're getting a liquor license soon.

$5 mixed fizz drinks! The soda shop is quite a unique experience, and this one sells an awesome variety of bitters and homemade extracts. There's a fizz bar at the back and a daily selection of sodas! We ended up ordering a large ginger and aloe fizz which was delicious, super tangy, and a nice heat was provided by the ginger. They had a large variety of other drinks, but we couldnt stay longer. I would recommend trying the meadow mocktail - a lavender, grapefruit summery concoction if you have time to stick around. The barristas are super friendly and this was a sweet first experience at fizz houses. Happy eating!

Holy mackerel! This place is amazing! I have never encountered anything like it. A bar based on non-alcoholic drinks that actually taste like top notch cocktails. I loved it! I wish there were more places like this. As a former bartender, the proprietor is at the top of his game and is a genuine talent. It was fantastic to be able to have "cocktail hour" with the kids and then continue on to do other things (you can add booze after 1700.) I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland.

I first went here the summer of '14 and fell in love. Now every visit to Maine requires a stop here. Their drinks are a flavorful experience. I'm a huge fan of the blood orange cordial and the mint ginger julep. With each visit, I've found their popularity growing, which great for them, but the last time they were quiet inundated with customers. A fantastic problem for a small business to have. Hopefully they add more staff or even change the seating around a bit to accommodate customers. I love this place. Prices are great, experience and décor are outstanding.

Haters gon hate. We walked past this place and noticed the awesome barware in the window, we didn't even know they served beverages in back. They have a really vast selection of vintages glassware, unique bitters, drink mixes, and fun things (banana flask anyone?) The staff is really nice, they told us we could try any bitters in the back, we ordered a couple of drinks. The 3 Berry Strew? drink contained drinking vinegars and soda. Watching the young beverage tender make the drink I was confused when he poured maybe 2 ounces of mixture into a mason jar and filled it with ice and soda water, I was ready to taste a bland bubbly fruit essence...Instead it was a perfectly refreshing sweet and tangy soda pop! really delicious. I think this place is 1 shot of spirit away from being one of the best bars around, the concepts they learn here, could be applied to any drink menu at any bar, anywhere. It was a really cool experiences. Throw 2 bucks and get one of their utlra vinegary spicy fire shots, it'll clear you up.

First of all I love Portland and this wonderful place fits right in with this terrific city. I no longer drink alcohol and they offer mock tails which are delicious without alcohol. I enjoyed the snow ball mock tail so much I wanted to lick the glass. The folks working in the store gave us a little education concerning the use of bitters and all natural ingredients in their drinks. If anyone is planning on visiting Portland stop in for a treat and try something totally different.

Not sure which of the 50 offerings on the drink menu menu you'd like to try? Tell them and they'll throw something together for your mood. They even offer a ton of equally fun mocktails for those who are too young or chose to not imbibe. Super nice and interested in your experience, this mixology pub is not to be missed. On your way in or out enjoy their super eclectic collection of bar supplies and elixirs they sell in their store to try at home. The only ding is for this place was the '80s music. Really? This Mid-century modern vibe screams for Sinatra, not Fine Young Cannibals. Just sayin. Even so, I will be back. If for no other reason than to try more food and drinks because it's gonna take a few visits to run out of new tasty options!

She was helpful in recommending a few products upon request and you are even able to sample any of the bitters or items you are interested in purchasing at the bar. Last I checked, they were only serving alcoholic drinks on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings but make it a priority if you're after an interesting cocktail with bartenders passionate and enthusiastic about what they're making for you. The place itself is all retail related in the front, and the bar is accessed by entering and going up a small flight of stairs so it's a bit hidden from view when you're just walking past, though I guess with the amount of articles coming out recently, the secret is probably out. There has been a lot more emphasis on the craft cocktail in general in Portland lately, but what I liked so much about Vena's was that there was no pretension, no prima donna bartenders, just people that are having fun embracing the creativity and excitement of crafting interesting drinks. One of the owners, Steve, I believe, was quick to answer any questions and would give me a dash of a particular bitter or syrup to denote the difference in flavor in certain drinks. I don't claim to be an expert in mixology, but I tried some really interesting drinks here and had a blast doing it!

I was in need of a refreshing beverage after wandering through Portland. Vena's rose up out of the sidewalk as if by a miracle. The entire staff was extremely welcoming and helpful. The drinks were light and perfect! I ordered the Ginger Lime drink from the no added sugar menu. It was the perfect drink if you like the zip of lime (I do!). The boy had a Strawberry Basil Seltzer (also from the no added sugar menu). It was subtle and not at all sweet and exactly what we were looking for. We would absolutely go back!

Plus, the sodas are amazing. A perfect balance of sweet and bitter. You can get it to go. They should make pitchers for parties. I've never seen such a unique pace. I wish there were one in NYC.

I met a friend there and I enjoyed a Ginger Julep (!!) and a tasty bowl of herbed popcorn. The "bartenders" were easy to talk to and the atmosphere is very relaxed and fun. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a little whimsy or an afternoon pick me up that is all ages fun.

What a great concept! It's not only a shop that sells all kinds of cocktail and soda paraphernalia, but a non-alcoholic soda bar upstairs. Two "bartenders" helped us decide from a list of a dozen or more freshly made sodas - we tried the strawberry basil soda as well as the grapefruit agave. Both were super tasty and unique. This seems like a great place to bring kids, especially teens, to have a cold, handmade soda in a hip environment.

Here are all the drinks I can buy in Portland for $5: - Allagash White (with an orange slice) at nearly every bar in town - An incredibly thick smoothie at Maine Squeeze - Kombucha at Hannaford, Whole Foods, Urban Farm Fermentory (or anywhere that carries UFF) - A Vietnamese coffee at Yordprom - A Bloody Mary at multiple locations throughout the city (i.e. Boru's or Local 188) - 2 pints of Pumpkinhead across the street at Dock Fore Those are all SPECTACULAR beverages for a fiver. So, if your company rolls into town and also wants to join the "drinks for an Abe Lincoln" game, they have to be pretty extraordinary. And Vena's Fizz House, in my opinion, just falls flat here. We came on a Monday afternoon and there was an incredibly informative young man working the front room. He gave us samples of a new drink they were testing, and talked to us about it's health benefits. Although, once we told him we knew how awesome apple cider vinegar was for the body, he looked visibly taken aback like we had interrupted his rehearsed speech. So, instead of improvising, he continued to explain to us what apple cider vinegar is and how it's great for our systems. We thanked him and went up the stairs to the soda bar. It's definitely a gorgeous space, and I love the concept of a "happy hour" with their mocktails/soda creations being a dollar cheaper. I think if I was ten or twelve years younger, I would appreciate it! But, it just wasn't for me now. The young man working the soda bar was supremely disinterested in working. He was leaned over the bar working on a crossword or something. Now, I'm totally cool with people entertaining themselves or staying busy on slow days (heck, I used to do it when I was a brewery tour giver!), but when customers come in - you drop EVERYTHING and give them your undivided attention until it's appropriate to let them be. When we went up to the bar, the young man barely looked at us. "For here or to go?" We told him to go, then asked him to go through the menu a little bit for us. He did - and that's when he came a little more to life. Once his speech was over though, like a wind-up toy, he just sort of slumped back over. "What would you get?" I asked (I always ask this at new places). "I don't know," he responded. "You don't know what you would get if you were drinking a soda here?" I prompted him. "Oh, well, I usually get the coffee soda with mocha... that means it's with chocolate." The boyo with me started snickering. "Oh?" I said, "Guess we'll take one of those crazy mocha concotions." The young man prepared our drink, handed it to us, and went back to his crossword. "Did you want money for this?" I asked playfully since he never charged me. "Oh, yeah, right. Haha," was his lackluster response. We left a fiver on the counter top and left. When we got outside, I took a big sip of the drink... and immediately passed it off to my partner to finish. It wasn't very carbonated, and it had a bit of an awkward, unexpected sour tang to it. The coffee and chocolate flavor were pretty underwhelming, too. All in all, the drink reminded me of an iced coffee "second drink" (y'know, when you've finished your beverage but let the ice melt down so it creates a watery "second drink" within the first drink). I like Vena'z Fizz House! I do! It appeals, like I said, to the teenager in me. The girl who was spending her every weekend hanging out in the Old Port with friends spending her disposable cash on whatever she wanted. But now, when I have to pick and choose what I splurge on... my precious five dollars just seems better suited for me now somewhere else.

A unique concept executed unevenly. The owner of Vena's will likely be waiting for you with a pitcher of soda ready to give you a free sample when you walk in. You might ask her questions about the place: How she came up with the idea; if there are other places like it, and she'll happily talk to you about it. You might go up the short flight of stairs and saddle up to the ol' fashioned bar and choose on the delicious-sounding sodas from the chalkboard menu and watch the bartender go through the dance of crafting your individual drink before your eyes, and when you drink it, chances are it will be as delicious as you'd hoped. That's everything that's right about Vena's. Here's what's wrong: 1. The time between when you order that delicious-sounding drink and get it in your hands can be way, way too long. I was waiting for what felt like forever for my soda there. By the time I got mine, the other people I had come with had finished theirs. 2. Cost. A small soda there is somewhere around $5 (I'll check the exact price and update this review later). It's a premium product, but for that price I'm not becoming a regular any time soon. 3. The third problem with Vena's is not on the consumer end of things, but a concern I have for them as a business: The soda bar area takes up maybe 1/3 of the space. The other 2/3rds of it are dedicated to mixology gear, syrups, sauces, local food goods, and other stuff that, for me, confuses the aim of the business, and they're paying rent on all that space. I can't help but feel like they found a great location with a bar that was too big for them and are occupying most of it with filler so it's not empty. It also remains to be seen how it fares in the winter when the summer tourists are gone. I love the idea of a soda bar. What an innocent and fun thing! I hope they do well, but I'm worried that for all the reasons above, Vena's Fizz House will just fizzle out (I'M SORRY).

This has become a regular stop for us on Sunday after brunch. The young lady at the front is always friendly and welcoming! The boys behind the counter are equally nice and accommodating with answering questions about the beverages. The chocolate pomegranate soda is fantastic. Of the slushies, so far my favorite is the ginger citrus with blackberry! Not a super sweet flavor, more subtle. Seems like the type of place that should have a cozy nook with board games. A nice modern spin on a soda shop. I'd recommend for any age group!

This is such a cute concept that we wanted to love-- however, the delivery and product left a bit to be desired. Drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive to our table, and did not come to our specifications (the extra sweet drink arrived with half the sweetener, and the less sweet drink arrived with twice the syrup). The teenagers working in this place seemed a bit frazzled-- which may have been part of the problem. On top of all this, the bar area was blazing hot. Bring in the air conditioner already! Though the concept and delivery is a bit of a 'miss,' we found the owner and staff to be generally very pleasant and wish them very well as they tweak their concept. Consider adding sandwiches and real cocktails to the menu-- this seems like much more of a sustainable model.

I am so psyched about this place. We finally popped in and headed right up to the bar while the woman at the downstairs register chatted with customers. There was a group of maybe 4 ladies together who had already ordered drinks, but the man behind the counter (who I believe may be one of the owners?) was quick to let us know there were samples of habanero hot chocolate (which was heavenly!). After a couple minutes of perusing the menu he came over to chat with us and gave us a couple more samples of some of the syrups -- also delicious. We ordered and sat down, and the woman from the front register made a point to come up and greet us personally, and brought us a bowl of complimentary snacks. My only complaint was that the bartender was a bit more into being super showy with making the drinks and chatting with everyone which, while great, slowed down the production line like crazy. It took us at least 10 minutes to get two very basic sodas. I appreciate people taking their time and crafting something awesome, but come on now. But the sodas were DELICIOUS and the excitement and genuine kindness of the two of them was really the cherry on top. Before leaving we perused the selection of bar goodies and syrups, tonics, etc, downstairs... very cool place!

I love the concept of this place, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. I was indecisive, so they took the time to actually go through the options on the menu to explain what things were (some of the names are pretty vague). I got the raspberry mint, which was fantastic and refreshing. My husband got the blackberry cream soda, which was ok - I thought it was sort of thick, but it wasn't bad. The sodas are a little pricy, though I do understand the ingredients are fresh and they make everything from scratch, but $5 for a soda is a bit steep. Great for a fun stop on vacation, but not sure I would make a habit of frequenting this place if I lived here.

What a cute place! The front is a store selling everything from banana-shaped flasks to various drinking glasses and bitters. The bar is upstairs and offers a variety of natural sodas mixed on the spot. I tried the Bangladesh Express. It had coconut, blood orange, lime, cardamom and ghost pepper. Interesting flavors and a kick from the pepper. I love the idea of this place. Fun and flavorful drinks without alcohol. Worth checking out when in the Old Port.

Love this place! I've been here twice now with my fiancé and you never know what you might find. We first stopped here hoping to find a unique gift for my fiancé's father who enjoys a good margarita. We know he loves spicy margaritas, particularly ones filled with hot peppers or spicy seasonings. While at the Fizz House, we purchased an infuser filled with spicy peppers you could use to infuse any type of alcohol. Perfect! Another thing we bought from them was a bottle of handmade margarita mix produced in Vermont. Just recently we went back and tried out their soda bar, definitely a win-win as their all natural soda is awesome! After coming here two times now, this is a great place to come to purchase any bar related items. Their soda bar even has a happy hour so you can sip on a "mock tail" for cheap. This is the only place in Portland (that I know of) that even has a soda bar!

This soda bar was a little gem. Way better than those boring juice bars. Each concoction was clearly very well thought out. Each fizz is between $4-6, I think. What a great find in Portland! We happened upon this place while exploring the walkable historic area. My wife is pregnant and welcomed the idea of a mocktail. At first I assumed this would be a cheesy place to get artificially flavored "homeade" sodas. I could not have been more wrong. They made me an amazing ginger drink with fresh ginger, mint, ghost pepper, Jamaican bitters and more. My wife also had one of the ginger drinks and felt like it eased some of the discomfort she was having in her pregnancy. We were not there in the evening when they offer alcohol in their drinks, but I have to think they would make some of the best cocktails around.

Stopped in here for cocktails on a warm afternoon. The store is a fun combination of syrups, tonics, and bitters with lots of retro Mad Men era barware. Upstairs is the "mixology" lab. I enjoyed my Dark & Stormy but prize for most unusual/tasty went to a friend's Absinthe Frappe. Helpful staff. Alcohol-based drinks $10- $15. Be warned: mixology applies to sodas, too, and the bar area was full of kids when we were there.

This place is such a winner. The ginger fizz I had was the best ginger soda ever. The fire-cider was an interesting mix of hot and horseradishy, pretty tasty and clears out the sinuses. The bits of other drinks I tried were good, too. My dining companions were way into the ghost pepper bitters; there were a lot of sweet-and-spicy options. I didn't sample any of the cocktails, but I'll have to next time, the menu seemed impressive. Plus the store of cocktail books and accouterments out front was pretty amazing. As a visitor to Portland, this place is definitely on my list of reasons to come back.

I can't decide if I legitimately loved it or if I'm still blinded by my initial reaction to the concept / fact that it exists. The store has the biggest variety of bitters, drink mixes, etc that I've ever seen in one place. It was hard to narrow down the options to one thing I could reasonably put in my suitcase for the haul back to New York, but somehow I managed to settle on a spicy ginger syrup. Sorry, hibiscus syrups. Maybe next time. I'll admit the bar area was a bit of a head-scratcher. I don't want to sit around a bar drinking not-alcohol and, outside of Mardi Gras, it is weird to have to jockey for a bartender's attention to get a drink in a 'to go cup.' I might have minded this less if the far more interesting-sounding "mocktails" were available to go but the menu plainly said they were not, so I opted for the 'dim and stormy' - fortunately, it was super refreshing and full of zesty fresh ginger.

What a fun destination! Exciting drinks, both alcoholic and non alcoholic: perfect for kids and parents. I enjoyed the Blackberry Coconut drink: think of a tropical, frothy fruit soda. It was fun to watch them make, but very messy. This would be a great place for a kid's birthday party, or maybe a baby or bridal shower. Minus points for the disarray. Behind the bar was not organized at all. It seemed like the bartenders couldn't find a lot of things. Bonus points for the awesome vintage barware up for purchase!

The ladies at Vena's are awesome, knowledgeable and friendly. It was around 6PM when we entered so it was very quite. They greeted us very warmly and immediately start chatting. They prepared 2 delicious cocktails, one gin based and one tequila. The second round was even more cool: as they were testing some new cocktails, they prepared us something outside the menu, and it was a success. They go outside the menu with no problem and like to experiment. We ended up wondering around the lower level where they have a small shop, and bought a cocktail book and a bottle of Fire Cider, which we took back home and will keep me company during the cold winter. I really hope to go back one day soon! If only DC had a place like this..

Vena's is, hands down, one of my favorite businesses in Portland. Even though it's a pretty small shop, I could spend hours browsing the huge selection of bitters, shrubs, tinctures, shakers and other mixology accessories. I've picked up some fabulous cocktail additions here including angostora bitter sugar cubes, gin infusion sets (great for gifts!), and shrub sampler packs. Now that the upstairs soda shop has a liquor license, it's a total game changer. On my last visit, my fiance had some kind of cherry vanilla phosphate cocktail and I enjoyed a bourbon drink with mixed berry shrub. The owner (I wish I could remember his name) is absolutely fantastic. Wish it was closer but I'll gladly travel!

This has to be one of my favorite Portland finds. This place spans an awesome retail location, apothecary of sorts, and bar. The retail location features the largest (by far) selection of bitters and drink mixing agents I've seen in store. Additionally, they sell a ton of cute and hard to find mixing accessories. The upstairs features a bar that serves up homemade sodas with bitters, mashes and shrubs (tart/vinegar syrups). These are made Virgin up until 430-500 when the booze comes out. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable and he and his bartenders mix up a variety of cocktails from their boozy menu. They're great at taking requests and mixing up something special, or doctoring up a drink from the "virgin" menu. We keep coming back here for a reason, the amazing selection in their retail section, the devious drinks, the fact that they source and incorporate a large array of local goods, and the people, they're so nice and helpful!

This seems like a perfect thing to have at the perfect time, in a great city. I didn't actually drink anything while I was there, but I loved the selection of (over 100!) bitters and everything else, pretty well organized but still a little rough and tumble so you can root around and come across unexpected things... I bought a "just add alcohol" mason jar full of stuff, which could easily be made DIY but it's so well marketed here, I couldn't help myself. It also inspired me to buy my own mini silicone ice cube trays to make bitters sugar cubes!

This isn't the place to go if you're looking for a artificial or imitation soda bar. The sodas are very fresh and the staff is very knowledgeable and will help you out if you're indecisive. I had the Raspberry Bergamot Shrub, which is a fantastic way to slide into drinking vinegars if you're a little nervous!

Curiosity got the best of me one night and I headed over here during an impromtu "bar" crawl. As you enter, you are engulfed by a mixture of Portland guides and bartending staples. Heading further into the shop, you can take a left or a right. Take the right and you end up in the land of bitters, coktail mixers, recipe books and collectible glassware. Take the left and you end up at the "bar". I took both and was sufficiently satisfied with my indecision. At the bar they have a creative menu of mock-tails and sodas. All of which you can add a shot or two of the liquor of your choosing. The bartender is also happy to show you a list of alcoholic beverages on special or to guide you to one of their favorites. i always love when bartenders make suggestions because, I mean, they know their way around a drink or too. I ended up with the Bangledesh Express which boasted that it was comprised of coconut creme and ghost peppers. Both of which I am a huge fan of. The drink was interesting and fun! I'll happily return to try out many of their other drink options!

Amazing find while walking around, love the concept, and love the drinks! Stop in, take a step back in time and a step up in quality. Every drink is made to order with fresh ingredients and an almost apothecary approach to bitters. The vibe is relaxing, and my plan to grab a cool drink to go turned into a stop and unwind, chill at the bar, sip and savor moment. Perfect for roaming Old Port and stopping with the kids during the day for some fun sodas that might even be good for them. Finally stopped in! The fizz bar at the upper level is way cool and I would love to have a meeting or something there. We stopped in on the way from drinks at Bull Feeney's to dinner at Eventide. I had already walked past when I processed what I had just seen on and through the windows and we had to go back. A Fizz House?! I thought these things only existed in Dr. Suess books and maybe...just maybe --- some faraway dreamland of a nine year old; nope it's real, awesome and delicious. So glad we checked this place out. The owner owns this business with his wife and they are true craftspeople in making pop (or do they call it soda in Maine?). None of that high-fructose corn syrup junk; you get some real refreshing flavors here. You can order some of this "fizz" up at the bar and they'll make it for you, similar as if they were making a cocktail (only there's no alcohol involved). There are LOTS of choices and it can be overwhelming (my wife took a full 15 minutes to decide), but I'm convinced there's no wrong choice. Truth be told, I don't remember what I ordered exactly...but let's see: it had basil, strawberries and it was superbly refreshing. The fizz is served in a mason jar and you can also buy popcorn (we didn't, but I noticed some people had some). There's a back part to the store full of books and different gifts for the craft-making aficionado. This was a cool and well executed concept -- if you're looking for a quick refreshing drink, be sure to skip on the Coke and seek this out. Who says there's not a craft to making pop?

Stumbled upon this place last year and had to stop in again when I came back to town. Amazing sodas and mock tails that you can't find anywhere else. They mix and put things together that you would never think of and they always taste amazingly. The front of the store has amazing cocktail supplies and ingredients.
