    Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm to pick up a dozen donuts. We were greeted by an empty store, 1 friendly shopkeeper and a big selection of donuts. The pumpkin glazed donut is amazing! Lots of fall spices and that tender texture of a good donut. The chocolate glazed donut I ate the next day and was still delicious. It was definitely starting to get more dry, but that's my fault for not eating on the same day. Yum.

    I figured it out! They make the donuts the day before then put them out for sale for the next morning. I stopped in at 430pm and got a warm-from-the-oven red velvet donut. It all makes sense. This is why they are always stale in the morning. Why, tony? Why make the donuts the day before so they are stale at breakfast time? I'm not adding anymore stars because that's still really lame, even if that donut was great. Please make them the day of, in honor of breakfast being the best meal of the day.

    An old time Donut shop. We have been several times, and I like the place. They are somewhat famous for the molasses glazed donuts. They had a lemon poppy seed one on special. As well as donuts, they also make eclairs, turnovers, and many other calorie rich, sugary treats. I have never had a tough time parking, but I am not exactly an early riser. Great little mom and pop joint!

    I had heard about Tony's donuts in the past but it wasn't until I heard Michael J Fox had ventured there that I myself google maps'd myself there. I have never been let down by Tony's--amazing donuts, great people & Michael J Fox seal of approval-can you go wrong? Also they always have enough donuts when I need a bunch for the office or for the kids at camp. Keep it up. Holy Donut ain't got nothing on ya!

    Yum yum yum yummmmmmmmmm! Home of the molasses donut, hands-down the most delicious treat in the state of Maine. There are a few tables and chairs, but mostly this place is good for picking up a box (or two, or three) of donuts to go.

    I wish I could give it more stars. This is THE best donut shop you will ever experience. Good service, and INCREDIBLE tasting uniquely flavored donuts. My personal favorite is maple glazed. Second is probably chocolate glazed, or jelly filled. All the donuts are good, never tasted a bad one. I strongly recommend you buy as much as you can. It is worth it to get fat over these.

    So, I thought holy donut had the best fix in the area.... And they are great for a potato donut. However, you want straight up traditional (cake on the inside with a crust on the outside) donuts done perfectly? This is your place. No frills, no hipster-vibe, no lattes. Just amazing donuts warm out of the fryer. I got a dozen (chocolate glazed, molasses, red velvet, and blueberry glazed) for $11. The ambience is also basic and authentic. The day I went, the seats were filled with gentlemen, some wearing WWII Vet hats, all definitely with AARP membership and in no hurry at all, drinking their regular New England Coffees and shooting the sh** over some delicious donuts.

    Tony's Donuts are an old-school, classic donut. When I go to visit my parents, my mother often requests that I bring her Tony's - chocolate, sugared donuts. A former roommate would buy a dozen old fashioned donuts and carefully freeze them and enjoy them with her coffee over a couple of weeks. While I enjoy the convenience of a drive-thru donut place, or the uniqueness of a boutique, potato donut, I love the tradition and consistency of Tony's.

    Delicious jelly and glazed donuts. Had a "throw-down" against the Holy Donut . . . Tony's are half the price and twice as good. Forget Dunkies and the hipster spots like the Holy Donut ($24 a dozen!?!?!?). Tony's is what you want.

    Parking is atrocious, but that's not going to stop anyone, right? Upon entering the store, I was instantly distracted by ALL THE GOODIES. It wasn't until I finished looking at all the fun-looking Eclairs and Turnovers that I realized... hey, where are the donuts? Silly me. They were all behind the counter! My friend and I split a half dozen because *someone* wanted to try everything (*someone* isn't me, just fyi). A blueberry, molasses, molasses w/ coconut, cinnamon sugar, red velvet, and chocolate sugar donut came out to $4.50. Not too shabby! We sat down to eat, and I felt about 60 years too young to fit in. I'm definitely not complaining! Just saying that I can't wait until my Friday afternoons involve catching up w/ pals at the local donut shop. Clearly, we bit off more than we could chew bc 3 donuts each would be insane. The red velvet was tasty, the blueberry was a little dry, and unfortunately, the molasses w/ coconut was a little more dry. The donuts seemed perfect for dipping into a cup of hot coffee (that's a thing, right?) but cake donuts just aren't my thing! I'm tempted to return for those eclairs though. :) UPDATE: Upon microwaving these bad boys at home, they get kind of gooey and wonderful. Added one star!

    The yeast donuts are pretty good, but nothing special and they don't have many. Usually when a donut isn't specified, it yeast. Here, they are cake unless specified so that was a bit of a let down. The real reason for 2 stars though is that the cake donuts were very dry. Not even edible after a day.

    Simply the best donuts on the planet. Old-fashioned hand-made. Walking into Tony's feels like stepping back in time...a time before Dunkin and Tim Hortons...a time of OLD-SCHOOL AWESOME DONUTS.

    Hands down the best traditional donuts in the area. Looking for unique flavor and types, then no, they are not as good as places like lil bigs or holy donut. Do you want a fantastic, far upgraded place to get donuts instead of dunkin, here is your place! I like them better than Krispy Kreme as well.

    Donuts are sweet and hearty, but the squares are like no other. Try the fig square. They are made just like my grandma used to make them. The filling is sweet and the dough is crispy and flakey -just like they should be. Great variety of other pastries too. Try some of the jelly donuts they've got any kind you like. Such an exceptional fig filling actually someday I'll ask if they would make me some fig filled jelly donuts!

    "They're amazing when they're warm!" Jacob R had been talking up Donut Walk 2K13 since the plan to invade Portland took shape. It was the big battle: the trendy, gourmet Holy Donut in one corner, Tony's and their classic lard lads in the other. Ring the bell, sucka - it's on. "Seriously, when they're warm, they'll massage your tongue with a thousand sweet fingers." The interior is designed by Alice, with tables, chairs, wallpapers and hand-writ signs straight from a 70's cafeteria. Old world diner stylings and big honkin' 'nuts for a steal at 85¢ a pop. Heavy on the glaze, throat-coating fattiness and a good amount of crumble, the rounds range from rich chocolate to red velvet to chocolate glaze. Humor is written in contradictions; see, there is no range. Expect the classics, dense and daunting, so it may be good idea to raid the rickety cooler for a milk Chug. Wait, what's this? Strawberry Quik? People drink those? "Damien, when they're warm, you won't be able to swallow because your mouth will adopt each bite, name it and raise it as its own child. That's how amazing Tony's donuts are warm." Guess what? They weren't warm. So until the true majesty of these unholy halos comes to fruition - either from the grease or sitting on a black dash during a slow ride back to Boston - they're gonna have to settle for A-OK.

    Delicious cake donuts! Amazing variety. My favorites - Pumpkin Glazed and Molasses glazed. Bizmarks are amazing with at least 3 different flavors - of course my favorite is blueberry. Whoopie pies, a Maine staple, are fresh and can easily be shared. Many other items in the cases and I haven't been able to try everything yet, but I am trying. Staff is quick to serve. A seating area with windows, makes it a nice place to grab a quick donut and drink and chat with a friend. If you like cake donuts, I recommend stopping here...if you don't trust me, ask Michael J. Fox, he's been here! :)

    It's a Portland mainstay for a reason. You cannot beat the combination of amazing donuts and amazing price. You literally cannot chose wrong, everything is good but if you don't buy an eclair at least once then you don't deserve to own a digestive tract.

    As I walked along Bolton, the unavoidable aroma of baked goods hit me as I made my way to the bus terminal. After some cross checking with my Yelp app and while following my nose, I found myself at Tony's - a well known local spot where the pastries, with a emphasis on donuts, which are donuts done right. Some donut shops do their best to wow folks over their unique combinations, no such luck here at Tony's. Their donuts are one's classic variety from plain to chocolate to glazed. It's not fancy, it's simply legit. While I'm no donut connoisseur, I feel pretty good about this declaration. When it became time to chow down, my dining companion and I ordred a few for my dining companion and I. We hadn't had lunch yet, but this was closest thing we could find before getting on the bus. I had a glazed and chocolate donut. Both were fresh, moist, and pretty satisfying. The prices didn't break the bank ($.60 cents) and their iced coffee was surprisingly decent. The service was extra nice. Not only did they have a warm greeting for every customer that came in, but they were fast and diligent about recommending donuts from their rather large variety of donuts. If I find myself back in Maine and feening for a snack while waiting for a bus to go back home, Tony's is definitely where I'm headed.

    To walk into Tony's Donuts is to walk into the throbbing, clanging heart of the Donut-Industrial Complex. If Colonial Do-Nuts in Brockton is the sort of Wonka-esque factory in which I wish donuts were created, then Tony's is the raw, utilitarian portrayal of how most donuts are really brought to life. It feels like you're stepping into a donut factory outlet, where the retail customer is a mere afterthought. The donuts, on the other hand, are definitely not. Tony knows how to fry dough, and he knows how to glaze it. He fries everything a bit on the light side, so that the cake donuts aren't as deeply crunchy as I'd like and the raised donuts don't have the soaked-in greasy richness they deserve, but everything's still crispy, heavily glazed, and unmistakably donutty.

    Came here on a Saturday afternoon and i literally couldn't wait to get my hands on those red velvet and cinnamon sugar coated goodies! However, after my very first bites into the donuts, it reminded me of the very time i got my heart broken, when everything just tasted plain bad. Yikes. The donuts were incredibly dry and stale, but maybe they're just having an "off" day...... I would give this place one star, but the service made up for it. Willing to give this place another try though.

    It's like Russian Roulette with a day old donut. If you buy a dozen from Tony's you're guaranteed to get a bad one in the bunch. When the donuts are good, they are EXCELLENT but there is nothing worse than a stale donut. Oh Tony's, you would have gotten more stars but when I ask what's fresh, don't look me in the eye and say everything. I know you're lying.

    Love! I showed up at 5:45 on a Sunday morning, so grateful the place was open THAT early on a weekend. The woman was very helpful and patient as I marveled at the amazing-looking donuts (plain, molasses, chocolate, Bavarian cream, blueberry, blueberry filled...) and the options (plain, sugared, glazed, powdered sugar, coconut...). I took a half-dozen with me in the car and couldn't stop eating. These blow away even my favorite local chain (Honey Dew). It is now a must stop anytime I'm in the greater Portland area.

    Wow, the pastries here are soooo good! My husband and I decided to grab some after checking out of our hotel across the street (Clarion) and I'm glad we did because the chocolate muffin was so soft, so moist, and full of so many chocolate chips that I was in heaven. The raspberry and lemon bars were awesome too. Visited: October 2, 2012

    after 50 yrs of being a loyal customer, I just can't go back any more - and this is after multiple visits over the past 2 yrs, hopeful that each time I got a cold, heavy, greasy doughy glazed donut, that used to be warm, fresh, light & airy, with just the right amount of glaze - it was just a bad day. I have now resigned myself to the fact that this is how they make the donuts & run the business now. Stale products don't get discarded - they go on the shelf for sale the next day. The once revered recipe for the glazed donut must not have been part of the sale. I am off to the competitors, sorry tony.

    I've traveled all over the world tasting pastries, cakes and pies, and thus far, nothing is as wholesomely delicious and satisfying as the donuts and whoopee pies from Tony's Donut Shop. I'm from NYC and while you think we have practically everything there, I am surprised that we barely have any local bakeries that make stuff on premises and make it worth a trip from afar. The donuts are like individual cakes; they are dense and sweet without leaving a slippery feeling in the roof of your mouth like many other fried desserts. Molasses, I think, is their signature donut flavor, but you wouldn't know how good their whoopee pies and eclairs are simply by looking at the case off to your left. I have a feeling that everything here is at least good. As tasty as the goods here really are, I'm sure it would kill diabetics just to look at the fantasized cream puffs!

    Old-fashioned/rustic looking donut shop where it seems like locals have been frequenting for many years. I came to check out their selection after seeing the good review on Yelp, but sadly, was very disappointed. We got an Original Glazed ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tony… ), which was really dry and tasted on the stale side. We also got a Blueberry Bismark ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tony… ), but that also tasted dry, and was way too sweet. I took a bite of my friend's Apple Turnover, and that actually tasted fresher and a lot better then the donuts I had. After reading Gregory M's review, I'm not surprised that I ended up with a few lemons (stale donuts). Unless you're a local that knows how to pick the fresh donuts, or you don't really care about the freshness of your donut, I would suggest skipping Tony's. At least parking is fairly easy in this area.

    I was tickled pink to see a Yelp sticker on the door when we stopped in here over the holiday. I couldn't help but mention to the guy who was getting our donuts that I was the first reviewer. He was unimpressed.

    Everyone loves Tony' s donuts....except me. I did not always feel this way. There were any a weekday or weekend that I would make my pilgrimage to the shop for a honey-dipped donut...ok two. I am not sure what has happened but it seems that over the last year the donuts taste like the day olds. They are dry and stale tasting. Sometimes they are stone cold. I miss walking in and seeing them making the donuts and smiling as the smell of freshly made donuts filled the air. I have been so disappointed I have stopped eating them and stopped referring people to the shop. Tony, please bring back the fresh donuts we all used to know and love!

    zee best. Homemade, tasty, so comforting. I love Tony's. An old friend brought a box in during class in high school, and I was sold. Whenever I'm in Portland...and feel like bein' bad, I'll go here. Whoopie Pies...are good. Donuts...are definitely good. But its the ECLAIRS that do it to me, those are the ones worth fighting for...wows. So..when you want to be "bad" go here and try their eclair!

    Sorry, Tony... I know you've been around forever, and I do love old-school places like yours, but your donuts just don't do it for me. Too dry!! Not fresh enough. I've tried multiple times, early in the morning, mid-morning, in hopes of getting a donut that was fresh, but every time I went, it was just disappointing.... dry donuts. Maybe that's just what they taste like.

To be honest I was a little disappointed that Anthony Bourdain's Maine show didn't include a segment on Tony's, after all the modern donut was invented in Maine and most locals would agree that Tony's Donuts serves the best donuts in the entire state (if not the entire planet!). How can you visit Portland, Maine and not stop at Tony's? If I were to ever move away from Maine, these donuts would be one of the local treasures that I would miss the most. Between the freshly fried treats and the packed seating area full of locals (dressed in their best L.L. Bean shammy shirts and talking politics), this place makes my heart very happy. When I am at Tony's, I am surrounded by my people. I am home. The best time to hit this little shop is first thing in the morning, right around the time they open. The donuts are usually warm and fresh out of the fryer during the early hours. Even if donuts aren't your thing, Tony's also serves a lot more than just donuts. My husband loves their giant honey buns, crème horns and bismarks. Prices are extremely reasonable at $.75 cents for a single donut and $7.25 for a dozen. Most of the national chain restaurants sell their donuts for around $.85 cents or more. Really Tony's can't be beat for the price. I give this place 5/5 stars and I hope that someday when I die and go to heaven, there will be a Tony's Donuts waiting for me there.

    One of my friends had been to Tony's Donut Shop before and had highly recommended it, so I decided that I would give it a try. Tony's is a local institution offering a quality breakfast or snack at a low price. For instance, you really can't beat their doughnut and small coffee special at $1.50. They also have other baked goods for sale, so if you're not a fan of doughnuts, you can always enjoy things like creme horns, baked squares or somesuch. While one can dine in, I decided to order a blueberry filled doughnut and a lemon filled doughnut to go. I found them to be tasty, not overly sugary either like a doughnut that you'd find at the supermarket or a national chain. I'm certainly open to going to Tony's again.

    Tony's makes an excellent and hearty donut. Don't expect pretty pink frosting with sprinkles here, this is a true local joint with molasses, pumpkin and blueberry. They will put on sugar or glaze if you prefer. They make them all day long so you can get them fresh and hot while not having worry about first come first serve. They are basic coffee options including a dark roast and flavors. Service was prompt and friendly , price for a dozen was $8.50 or a donut or a "small" coffee for $1.50. Worth a stop and an extra pound when visiting Portland.

    This place opens very early. The smells are fantastic, of fresh baked pastries. A dunkin donuts is right up the street but why would anyone go there? This place is sooo good. it even has the a table filled with oldtime locals talking politics.

    Sorry, but these are only good, not great. They don't hold a candle to Donuts With a Difference in Medford, MA. Raised donuts are rather thick and bready, not airy and light. Cake donuts are definitely tasty, but about as dense as a metamorphic rock and as heavy as a lead weight. Eating them prompted feelings of profound discomfort and near regret. I would try them again, but they are not in my top 3 donuts...those would be Donuts with a Difference, the Donut Plant in NYC, and Donut Villa in Malden, MA.

    One of the few times I ever remember the Yelp aggregate rating really letting me down. The filling was very good on the two donuts I tried (jelly and cream), but I absolutely hated the donut itself. Maybe it's just a style I don't enjoy. It was thick and doughy. I guess I'm more of a melt-in-your-mouth donut kind of person.

    I'd drive up here from Boston just to while the hours away with a pile of donuts in front of me. With prices this cheap how can you beat them?! Also, I'm not normally one to rave about having to pass through the kitchen to get to the restroom in back, but having to pass through where all the "Donut Magic" happens...oh ya, bring on the coffee. Which I might add comes in the samllest cup I've ever seen; it's cute. Ya, I said cute.

    I'd only love this place more if their beverages were as well done as the doughnuts. I think the hot chocolate we ordered was instant. Still, I can't knock a star off for this because you don't go here for the bevs. It's all about the doughnut... and they've perfected them. The molasses seems to be the local favorite, but I am a chocolate freak. The chocolate glazed was great. The blueberry was good too. Really friendly staff. Amazing prices too. Dunkin is more expensive... and their doughnuts are 1/2 the size and 1/2 the flavor.

    There is no other donut I'd eat in Portland, unless my mom made it, and even then I'm not sure I could do it! I have never had a bad experience or a bad donut at Tony's. It's not a fancy spot, but it's the best in town. The family-owned business has been around for decades and it's a serious tradition for many Portlanders. My parents actually sent Tony's donuts to me once when I lived in Colorado. If you're lucky, you'll get there early enough (they open at 5 a.m.) to score a fresh, hot donut right out of the oven. And even if you have a few extra the next morning, they'll still be delicious. Don't miss it!

    I don't get the appeal of this place. Nothing tasted nearly as good as it looked. We had a few bites our of our half dozen and pitched the rest, not worth the calories.

    Although I live in San Diego now I will never find a place to replace Tony's. This is a MUST stop everytime I come home. Everything is delicious. My favorite is the toasted coconut. Hope you enjoy it too!

    after reading all these reviews and hearing all the hype, my expectations were justly towering. since moving back from the sf bay area, which has passable to exquisite donut shops all over the goddamn place, i've been wondering what our local alternatives to DD might be. and now, having sampled a variety of tony's donuts, my quest resumes. i don't know what happened. in all honesty, i'm still astonished at how middling these donuts were. i tried a bunch of them.... "maybe this one will be better" i would think... i couldn't get over it. yelp had never let me down. all but the blueberry cake were dry and boring; anemic, you might say... even the basic glazed -- that universal measure of donut shops. and while they were all improved dramatically by dipping in coffee, you could say the same for those useless little pucks at dunkin d's. i apologize to the many tony's devotees for speaking so harshly of your beloved establishment. perhaps we just seek different things in our donuts. i would agree that it's got a very appealing atmosphere, a fun place to come with friends -- donut quality notwithstanding.
