Cozy & welcoming. Check. Great music. Check. Stellar Delivery of the burger I'd been craving for a week. Check. Traditional fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, all excellent. Highly recommend.

I've been frequently eating at Shays for the past 4 years and am pleased to say that the quality of food has always been fresh, flavorful and consistent. Shays has one of the best daily specials menu advertising reasonable discounts on food & drink. (Monday's $5 Quesadillas and Wednesday's $3 off Pub Meals are highly recommended)! Waitstaff are kind and attentive. The atmosphere is intimate (a little cramped sometimes) but outdoor seating is available during the summer months which frees up space. Shays proudly displays local artist's paintings which makes the trip all the more worthwhile. Whether you're looking for comforting pub cuisine after a long day or grabbing drinks and appetizers with friends, Shay's is where it's at.

I feel like I'm always odd man out on some places but I did not enjoy my meal at Shays. I had a buffalo chicken quesadilla which was lacking in cheese. I can't remember if this was by design or not.... But in my opinion a quesadilla needs something melty to hold it together, mine had only blue cheese, chicken, and onions. Some mozzarella would have been a great addition. My friend's French fries were good. Beer selection was average. Meh overall.

Came here blind. Fish chowder was the best I've had in Portland. Veggie burger...very good. They sure know how to melt cheese! Surprise was the veg du jour...looked to be sauteed to order. Outstanding. The only improvement I would suggest is on their Guinness pours...not proper. Will definitely be back.

Nice surprise. Was just looking for something quick and found this place. Everything we had a great and the beer was cold. Service was very good and friendly too. Thanks Shay's.

I love the entire experiences! The food is great and the drinks are amazing! I can't wait to go back and eat there ago. The service was wonderful too the waitress was super sweet and very understanding to the fact that we were in no hurry to go and loved everything.

This place was a great find. Great food, drinks, and the Gnocchi, Sausage & Fresh Mozzarella was rather amazing! We always try to stop by when we are in Portland.

I've only been to Shay's in the winter, so I can't vouch for the patio area... though I am excited to visit in the warmer months! I've been here a few times and enjoyed it! It's a little divey, and the bathroom is SERIOUSLY THE TINIEST BATHROOM EVER, but they've got pretty great food (I love the veggie burger, and the Greek nachos) and a pretty awesome selection of cocktails!

My favorite place for lunch since I moved downtown! Food is not your average bar food and rivals any nice restaurant in Portland! Service is always friendly and spot on! Great beer selection as well. Place is always packed during lunch so hit it round 1130 to avoid the rush...,

Our party of 4 decided to try to get a table on a Saturday night before a show at the Merrill. We were told it would be 25 minutes but we ended up getting seats at the bar almost immediately. The ladies behind the bar were lovely - very attentive and nice to chat with. We had the following: burger, steak bomb, steak salad and fish n chips. We all really enjoyed our meals very much. I had ordered my steak salad rare, but there was only one rare piece and the others were much more well done. The ambiance is nice and laid back. It's not a large space but we pleased to find we could hear each other well over the noise, so good acoustics in that regard. One not great thing... right at the end of our meal, a group of people who were waiting for a table were invited by the bartender to stand behind us so they could order drinks. They got their drinks and instead of going to hang out near the door where there's more space. By the way, they have double door entryway which is great so no drafts were coming in. These other patrons were practically on top of us and it became uncomfortable and awkward. They were annoyed to be bumping into us but they weren't giving us any space. I would definitely go to Shay's again and I recommend others to go there if they're looking for an easy going, casual atmosphere.

A perverted employee got his jollies at my expense. The food is pedestrian. The drink special is bait and switch. The dining experience in no way justifies the insult to dignity and intelligence. I will never return.

I like Shay's. The location on Monument Square is great. They have a few tables sectioned off in front on the square and it's perfect for people watching but there aren't many so get there early if you want to be outside. I ate inside that day. The staff was really nice and friendly. The food was pretty good too. The only issue I had was their open kitchen because the ventilation is really bad and the restaurant filled with smoke. Kinda like when I cook at home. If they get that fixed then I will definitely give them another star!

Pesto and capers on nachos, yum. A great little place with fun vibe. Good beer and food. Nice staff. Fun music went from Dolly's working 9-5 to Prince's let go crazy. Will be back.

The staff and atmosphere are super friendly. This is my go to bar in Portland, whether it's a quick drink before a wine show :) or a bite to eat on my way in town. The hot and dirty is my dirty little secret. Also the mojitos are to die for because the bar tenders look like they are going to kill me after I order my forth. Apparently muddling is a work out. Who knew? And when you walk by David's to get here please flip them off for me.

The best part about Shay's is the amazing patio overlooking part of the downtown area. I imagine that these seats are a hot commodity in the summer but we were here on a warm October day and had no problem getting seated right away. Our dog was welcome too. Our burgers were above average and the people watching was interesting. I've heard that this place has good night life but if it gets too busy you can always take a breather out on the relaxing patio.

First time here and totally impressed with everything. I had the sweet and spicy grilled chicken Cobb salad. Lettuce was fresh and chicken was great. Fun atmosphere and fast service!

Farmers burger was awesome! Ver flavorful..Ordered it medium rare and got it like that. Most places always overcook it. They have a decent kids menu on which everything is $5 .My son had the chicken fingers and fries and he gave it 5 stars.. Nice atmosphere and fast friendly service!

One of my favorite restaurants in Portland. A good place to come home too. Good food, inexpensive, and great, inexpensive drinks as well. Love their weeknight specials, esp. Sangria night...another pitcher please! Staff is friendly and fun. Try the burger w/ guac, chopped salad, and their own pineapple infused vodka martini or watermelon margarita that comes in a jelly jar.

Decent pub food. Good prices and nice atmosphere. We were there for lunch on a Friday, so it was quiet. I wouldn't make a special trip for it, but if you're on the area and looking for lunch, it would be a good choice.

Great food and and a "my hometown bar/restaurant" feel. What really got me was when I asked for my fish to be prepared a different way then presented on the menu and the waiter said no problem. I had three great beers and some Angry Orchards mixed with wiskey. Great spot.

Squeezed in at the bar on a Friday evening for a couple of drinks and dinner. I'm not really a burger eater, so it took a while for me to find something on the dinner menu that tickled my fancy. I settled in on the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. The pulled pork sandwich was up to my high bar food standards (being from small town Midwest, we know our pork). The sweet potato fries were a little over done for my preference, but we're good nonetheless for my expectations of bar food. Let's get to the real winners here: the drinks. I had a black and stormy and a Pom sidecar. Now, the black and stormy I ordered after observing someone else order one in a different establishment that came in a much smaller glass, with the ginger beer on the side. Thinking that was how I would be served here, I was worried I would feel it was over priced....Nope! That sucker came in a big ole glass with the rum all on top of the ginger beer and ice and strong but still tasty! Then, since I was so impressed and treating myself to an evening out, I decided to try another drink I had never had before: the Pom sidecar. I've never had brandy before, but I'm usually a sucker for pomegranate, so I decided to go ahead and try. Um, yes!!! It was maroon, served in a martini glass and isn't for the weak at heart. The first couple sips burned a little on the way down. The bartender said that they were about to take this little gem off the menu because it wasn't getting ordered, but that night she kept making them! So, try it before it goes away! There was also a pumpkin spice cocktail that sounded good, even though pumpkin is typically not one of my go to flavors for anything. The service here was super nice. The ladies behind the bar seem awesome and they were all helpful, prompt, and peasant.

Heard a lot of great things about this place but sadly was disappointed. I ordered the "Hot and Dirty" Martini. It was more like a "strong and salty". My friend loved hers though so it could just be me... but I was really put off by the saltiness... and I like dirty martinis. Food wise, I ordered the veg burger and that was fine. Didn't blow me away but I wasn't expecting it to. Fries were good (sweet potato). Service was awful. I had an empty water glass for over 20 minutes (after asking for a refill) and the place was empty. Our server didn't come by for a good 25 minutes at one point... we all would have ordered more drinks too. We had to flag down a food runner to grab our tabs and waited another 15 minutes to get them. The place was STILL empty. WTH?! Would definitely try somewhere else in the area out before going back.

Stopped in for a late lunch. Nice outdoor seating in the square. I had a Turkey burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was flavorful and moist. Good portion size.

I went here expecting a warm pub type atmosphere and was sadly disappointed. When we walked in at lunch time there was no one sitting at the small bar and just a couple of occupied tables. The bartender was eating her lunch at the end of the bar and was playing on her ipad and instant vibe when walking in was that we were bothering her.....My gut told me to turn around but we were hungry so we stayed. The service was lacking even though we were the only 2 people sitting at the bar. We both ordered simple wraps, my husband the grilled chicken caesar and myself the tomato, mozzarella with fresh greens. I asked to hold the onion....but clearly the bartender wasn't paying attention and I got the onion but no tomato....not the end of the world but when you only have 2 people to wait on One would think you could get a simple order correct. I will say the sandwiches were good and clearly made with fresh ingredients so I have no complaints on the quality of the lunch but the atmosphere and service do not warrant a return trip.

Been here three times over the last year. Reminds me of the classic Old Port bars/restaurants from the 1970's. Interesting mix of clientele that evolves over the course of the day. Food is well-prepared and fresh. Lot of beer options. Owner and chef have produced a strong addition to Portland foodie scene. Location right on Monument Square, one of the most historic sites in Maine. The patio on the square is a great place to drink a beer and people-watch.

Oh noz. So-so food, terrrrrrrible service. I recommend this place to people who know nothing about dining - aka people who are stuck in Portland and are used to eating at the Ninety-Nine. I can't decide if Shay's used to have better food when I was in college, or if I was just more easily impressed before having lived in Chicago. I know the Portland dining scene was not at all what it is now... so maybe Shay's just seemed better then. My mom and my friend and I had dinner here last week, and I may as well have made my own tuna melt... and I would have been infinitely better at keeping my guests liquored up. Mom ordered fish and chips, which she thought was good (but she doesn't get out much...), I had an okay tuna melt, and my friend had a buffalo chicken burger which he made no comment about. Our original server disappeared and left us with a sarcastic and weird server who rarely attended to us. Halfway through the meal, we finished our beers and my friend pushed his empty can to the edge of the table - now granted it was a can, but it was on the edge of the table, obviously waiting to be picked up and returned with a fresh can. No such luck. The server asked us as we were paying if we wanted more drinks. Fail. I used to like Shay's a lot. No longer. Too bad, because this is a prime location with a chill, sexy atmosphere (sans stupid service).

I had been to Shay's one other time, and had an overall good impression of the place, it's cute and centrally located in town. I went there last night for dinner and only had a "meh" experience. The waitstaff was very attentive (the place wasn't crowded) and friendly, so that was good. I ordered a spicy gin martini and was a bit disappointed to find it had a pepperoncini in it. I'm a gin martini drinker, a jalapeno olive? Yes. A vinegary sweet pepperoncini? Not so much. We ordered. I got the chicken Mediterranean pasta. I was not impressed actually and I'm not picky. It was luke warm, there were way too many toppings (tomato, sun dried tomato, artichoke hearts, capers) and not enough pasta. The flavor was not bad, but the sauce was I think maybe just oil? I'm not sure. The chicken was very good. My friend ordered cheese pizza and said that was tasty, but who can screw that up? I came away feeling unsatisfied and a bit disappointed. Overall, I don't hate the place, and maybe other dishes are better, but for the price, I was not overly impressed this time around.

5 dollar martini menu! yummy eats! awesome staff! i love shay's! period. i go here weekly, and never get sick of it. the staff is really flexible, they always accommodate my special requests (give me bleu cheese olives! salad instead of fries! sub portobellos for chicken! man, i'm demanding). One of the best examples of their awesomeness? Went with a friend who is allergic to mushrooms, and ordered the gnocchi. Mushrooms weren't listed on the menu, but were in the dish. Not only did the waiter immediately take the dish back and have it prepared with no 'shrooms, he removed everything from the table that may have touched them (like silverware), without blinking an eye. This is the perfect spot to meet up with friends before heading out for the eve!

Literally the worst dining experience EVER! No exaggeration. They have the absolute dirtiest kitchen ever. BEWARE! Went here with four of my friends for one of their birthdays. I found a short black hair in with my sweet potato fries. Waitress was very inattentive. While waiting for her to come back to the table to tell her about the fries (bring courteous to the other diners by not making a scene about it) my friend found a hair baked into her French onion soup. Yes. Out of the five of us, TWO OF US FOUND HAIRS IN OUR FOOD that obviously weren't ours!! Watching my friend pull the long blonde hair out of her mouth was all any of us needed to see. We promptly stopped eating. The waitress took the price of the fries and the soup off of our bill, but she did not seem surprised and did not even apologize. Sorry, but when two customers find hair in their food within 5 minutes of each other I expect more than "oh. That's gross. I'll take those off your bill." Maybe things like that are a normal occurrence at Shay's. Who knows. But I'll never be back to find out!

Best bar all around in Portland for a chill spot- if you happen to get a booth. Great music, big screen for sports, small dining area- so it's got the intimate appeal and always great service and daily deals. Can't go wrong with specialty quesadillas and the salmon! Fun seating at bar too.

When we lived close by, we were in Shay's on a weekly basis. It's still one of my favorite spots for sitting outside when the weather gets warm! Their $5 martini list is the best deal, and now includes a Manhattan which is dangerous, good news. My wife usually orders the Hot and Dirty - dirty gin martini with olive and pepperoncini. They also have daily drink specials - wine or beer specials, sangria, etc. They have a great salad with choices of chicken, steak, or salmon - beat with blackened salmon! The nachos, along with the spinach and artichoke dip, are really good starters. Basic, affordable, and filling - great for a snack or happy hour time of day. ***Edited - Earlier in the summer, the owners let me know that they're replacing the ventilation so we'll be able to enjoy Shay's all year long!*** The only downfall is that, during colder months, the inside can get smoky - due to the open kitchen. Overall, one of my favorite go-to places in Portland!

  • Monica L.

Good selection, good food, good service. It's not a huge place or a fancy place, but for a bite to eat, I liked it. I heard their Mediterranean nachos are good, so I wanted to try them. They were good, but not so good that I wouldn't try their regaular nachos next time.

The sangria was tasty. The BBQ sliders were alright. The nachos were burnt. Go for drinks and save yourself the heartache.

Now that's a bar and grill. Small, cramped, loud...friendly quick service at the bar. Had a Dead Guy Ale and half size Mediterranean nachos. Glad I didn't order the full size or add chicken (as offered). The half was more than plenty of irregular nacho goodness. Tortilla chips with tomatoes, black olives, artichoke, pesto and Too much cheese. All in all decent place.

This little pub is very down to earth. Really good pub food, beer and cocktails. Located next to David's restaurant, it's the place to go when you want unpretentious food and drinks. Everyday has a special deal. We went on $3 off pub meals day. I got the pulled pork plate. A mound of delish pork served with coleslaw and topped with onion rings. I opted to switch my regular fries to sweet potato fries. All or under $10. You can't get that at David's! My husband had the black and blue steak salad. He said ithe steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked. He just wished there was more steak! Definently going back!

What can you say about Shay's? It is inviting and comfortable, the food is great (if you haven't had the Mediterranean Nachos you are doing yourself a disservice) and the drinks are spectacular. It is one of those places that is small enough that I hope you are already there reading this because I still want to be able to get a seat! Beer selection: excellent. But I don't drink beer, so let's take a look at the cocktails. If you can't find something truly, truly amazing here there is something wrong with you. The Ginger Rye Martini is the stuff (my) dreams are made of. But there is something for everyone. But what about the prices? Again, I hope you are already there because (GET OUT OF MY BOOTH just kidding - I'll share) the prices are absurd. In a good way. I challenge anyone in this town to find a better martini at any price! ....but $5? It's absurd! And delicious! Are they small you ask? Nope. What they are is the flat-out best deal in town. I repeat, FIVE DOLLARS. Think about this. And this is not Happy Hour, where they have even better deals every weekday. Well if you are like me, you're thinking there has to be a catch. There isn't. How's the service? Impeccable. Food? Fantastic. Drinks? The best. Do yourself a favor and make this one of your stops, you'll be delighted.

Hubby and I got a Friday evening out in Portland. Found Shays and it was great! Busy and thankful we got a table right when we walked in. Friday $1.00 off drafts- yes please! Which speaking of drinks, they come at warp speed. Order it and BAM! It's in front of you! Service, selection and price were great. Fun and inviting, music choice was appropriate. For food we split their Mediterranean nachos (cool spin on the same ole thing) and their Cuban pork sandwich. Both were excellent. Nachos had a lot of cheese- too much for me, but not for my husband. Met one of the owners as she was waitressing- very nice. Would go again.

Oh my Gawwd. Just stopped in here the other night for a beer and a bite to eat while in Portland for a conference. Talk about great casual dining accompanied by friendly banter from the bartenders. A spot where the air of pretension in the current Portland culinary scene is absent but the food is spot on. Loved the spinach artichoke dip and the nachos and the spicy martinis and the pineapple infused vodka. If you're looking for great food and drinks at good prices and a great location where all walks of life can sit side by side and enjoy themselves then Shays is your place!

I've been going to Shay's since 2007 which is the place I met my husband for the very first time. This has been "our place" for the last 7 years. The few times we get to go on a date through out each year (with out our kids) is this place. 2 years ago, my husband got down on one knee and "proposed" again in Monument Square, right in front of Shay's big front window. (I say "again" because we got married very quickly to each other after meeting. And I was finally getting my own big girl ring.) I walked into there after to dine with him and the whole place was applauding and some even crying. Our super sweet and up-beat server congratulated us with free drinks! I felt bad and explained to her that we were already married and the situation. This place has been the best place I can possibly think of to dine in Portland. The food is absolutely amazing, fabulous drinks and very affordable! Perfect portions. Exquisite art. Wonderful lighting/ambiance. Friendly and polite people. Great specials! I am a hair stylist here in town and anyone who is interested in trying a new place, this is the first place I tell them. I've never had a bad trip to Shay's! I'm not kidding about the food either. It's what keeps me coming back. I love the Mediterranean Pasta w/shrimp... So good. Last time I got a panini and a salad. The horseradish mustard, I believe was what made that panini. The salad was gorgeous and perfectly put together with good -for-you ingredients. SO. Good.

A great menu with many options, tables at the side of Monument Square. Friendly server, had the grilled Salmon on greens special. Decent prices for Portland. Small inside dining room, but probably a good date place? Will likely get back there... More than just another Portland pub.
