    I'd driven by this place a million times until friend suggested it for lunch. I was surprised, in a good way. The sign and the appearance of the building never made me think twice about this place. Now it's a new favorite. The décor could use some work. Think a New Orleans themed low end Chinese restaurant style. They've tried to 'jazz' it up with a few tin signs, etc. but couldn't shake that low end strip mall feel, even though it's not in a strip mall. The service has been great both times I've visited. Friendly, professional and extremely helpful. It's a counter service set up. They serve a very nice selection of regional / Mexican beers across a few styles in bottles and cans, have a few good taps and decent wines by the glass. The tap water out of the machine is great. This is not a joke. Our party gulped down cup after cup event though we also had drinks. Don't event think about bothering with the bottled stuff if you're a water drinker. How was the food? Great! My companions had BBQ sandwiches that agreed even with their discerning southern palates. I enjoyed the grilled fish salad so much that I've ordered it both times. The prices are very good for this level of cooking, a little under $10 per item. Extensive list of sandwiches and a nice selection of salads. You order at the counter and they run the food to your table. You must try the milkshakes if you're into that kind of thing. Both times our party has raved about the key lime and salted caramel milkshakes. I look very forward to making this a regular lunch spot whenever I'm in the area. It would be difficult to go wrong here. Don't let the cheap plastic signage fool you. These people know what they're doing and do it will. Atmosphere 2 stars. Service 3 stars. Food 4 stars.

    Excellent food!!! Great beer selection. I've been to New Orleans and put myself in a food coma down there, and I always come to Po' Boys to do the same thing. If you get the fried pickles, have them put their Cajun seasoning on it to kick 'em into overdrive. They definitely bring New Orleans to Portland, ME!!!!!

    So delicious! Best fried pickles in Portland if you ask me, and that red pepper mayo, yum. My go to is the Ray Nagan and it never fails. Salads are also great, I love the pickled veggies. Also, don't forget a macaroon to top it off! They melt in your mouth.

    Just got out of the airport and needed lunch. This had good reviews. It was easy to find but lot was full for lunch crowd. Limited street parking too. We had the golden shrimp and bbq sandwiches. They were good sandwiches. It was nice that the bread didn't make most of the sandwich. The bread flattened but held together so you could taste the whole sandwich and not just the bread. We didn't get adventurous with sides or anything just plain fries. Overall good. Hubby is southern, he said the sweet tea was good and sweet.

    Pulling long day and or nights at UNE down the road has lead me to eat at this establishment on numerous occasions. Most of the time I walk which is handy as it's very common for the small parking lot to be at capacity. Lets talk food. The sandwiches are overflowing with whatever delicious goodness you decide on. A regular size will fill up anyone but the hungriest of people to which you can order a large or add sides. I personally favor the falafel, but will vary it up from time to time. If you're feeling ambitious you can also order fries, shakes, or a sweet treat to which I say if you like coconut get the coconut macaroons. They are to die for. The cajun fries are delicious albeit spicy to my palate, but regular and sweet potato varieties are also available. The thai iced tea shake is wonderful although I haven't had a bad flavor yet (ie salted caramel). Po'Boys is pricey compared to other "sandwich" like shops, but the quality is worth every extra penny.

    Time of Visit: Lunch on the 21st Order: Blackened fish sandwich, and cajun fried Pros: Blackened fish was incredible Cons: Bread was just average, parking could get out of hand when very busy Thoughts: The blackened fish sandwich here is out of this world! We went here on the way to the airport with my parents and got 3 large blackened fish sandwiches. First of all when they say large, what they really mean is 2 medium sandwiches on one tray, so if you get a large, you had better be hungry. Once you get over the shock of how much you just got and bite in...holy crap this is some of the best fish I've ever eaten, and by far the best blackened fish sandwich I've ever eaten. You get a ton of fish on this thing; it isn't your normal fish sandwich where you get a little fish with your bread. This is a pile of fish between toppings sandwich and it is SO GOOD! The cajun fries were also incredible but honestly if you get a large fish sandwich you really don't need anything else. I do wish that their bread was just a bit higher quality and it might move from the best blackened fish sandwich to the best sandwich of all. Definitely check this place out if you're ever in Portland.

    You don't expect to find a restaurant that focuses on Po Boys in Portland, ME but I'm glad I did. The restaurants menu is focused so you know they are serving what they do best. Great fried shrimp and oyster po boy and sweet tea with enough sugar to stand a spoon up in. Great place for lunch.

    The beginning of this review takes place not at Po Boys, but at the legendary Fisherman's Grill down the street. So there I was, standing in front of FG at noon, waiting for it to open. Outside, a pregnant woman paced angrily back and forth. Her husband, wary, kept pushing his face against the glass, peering inside looking for signs of life. 3 other families sat around waiting patiently, then 6 Asians with cameras around their necks showed up. It is 15 minutes past the appointed opening time and you could cut the tension in the air with a knife. A chef walks out and begs for patience, says it will be at least 15 more minutes before they can open. Hands fly up into the air, sighs exhaled... it was at this point I decided this was too much negative energy to endure for a lobster roll. This, is where Po Boys entered to save the day. There was nowhere near as much angst to be found, and everyone seemed generally more content about life. My golden fried shrimp sandwich was amazing, as was the coconut macaroon I had for dessert after. I'm pretty sure pandemonium was still building over at FGs, but I was out the door, happily filled, and on my way again. Sanity. Saved.

    Two words: blackened fish. I'm obsessed with this sandwich! (Great on salad too!) The fish is always cooked well and seasoned beautifully! This was one of the first places I tried when moving to Portland, and I still eat here regularly. They are consistent, delicious, friendly and have enough variety that I'm never bored (yes, I occasionally get something other than the blackened fish. The oysters and shrimp are good too!) The sweet potato fries are devine, and a side is plenty big to share. The regular fries are not the best, so I always get sweets. Their shakes and cookies are great too - which I didn't expect at first, but was pleasantly pleased! Small parking lot, but there's usually a spot or two open. Certainly worth the trip up Forrest for these goodies!

    I eat here way too much. I mean, I try to eat lunch at other places around town, but one way or another I usually end up here. Things I love: - The food, obviously. I've probably tried 10% of their menu, and I want to try 95% of it. Take this as a HUGE compliment because I can't say that about any other menu in town. Ordering takes me forever because it ALL looks good; this is also unusual because I take a very quick and decisive 'seek and destroy' approach to ordering from menus. I want to explore all the little sides. I'm talking to you, red beans and rice (next time) and gumbo (maybe next time also). I always make the mistake of throwing on a side to a medium sandwich, and they both together end up being way more than I can tackle. The basket sides are so big, you guys. You wouldn't think, at $4/ side. My only regret is not coming here during dinner, when I can handle a bigger, deep fried meal. All the menu options feel like dinners wearing a lunch beard. - I love the New Orleans divey vibe this place has, with music posters, beads dangling from the ceiling, and other odds and ends all over the place that you can examine while you're waiting for your order to come up. I've spent some time in New Orleans and you actually start getting suspicious if a place with good food ISN'T divey. I'd rather eat here than in New Orleans any day - they have NOT ONCE asked me to do anything to earn beads, and I have a lesser chance of contracting hepatitis (if you've spent more than 2 minutes on Bourbon Street then you'll understand this). - I love the location. It seems like Morrill's corner is experiencing a culinary Renaissance, with Susan's Fish N Chips across the street and a few other good places to eat in the area, too. Keep it up, Morrill. - I love the service. I'm always greeted with a smile by the same counter staff person. She's great. It can take 5-10 minutes for my order to come up, but I'm totally fine with that. - I love the fact it's next to Goodwill. I can usually combine my love of spicy cajun food with my love of thrift. - I love that they have $2.50 pints on Mondays and Tuesdays. This is turning into a great place to hang out with friends, especially now that I've discovered there were picnic tables outside underneath the mounds of snow this whole time. Take the drive ALL THE WAY DOWN Forest Avenue and experience some great cajun food. But come for dinner on an empty stomach.

    Can't believe it took me a year to come here. I loved the vibe of the place. Definitely should have researched a little more about the proportions because I definitely ordered /ate way too much. My boyfriend had the cheeseburger po boy and I had the uptown. We also ordered both large and with sides of fried onions and cajan fries. The fries were delicious I would skip the onions. Not because they were bad but the fries are much more worth the money. I love that they have such a wide variety or beer available. Service was quick and everything looked pretty clean. We will be coming back.

    I'd like to provide this review in freestyle poetry form, as it's the only way for me to adequately express my ardor. I had a sandwich with pot roast, gravy, horseradish, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. The sandwich was bigger than my arm. I had all of that sandwich - the one with pot roast, gravy, horseradish, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. I would do it again any time. Oh yah, fried pickles.

    I was raised in The Big Easy, now living in The Big Apple. I flew into Portland to work my way up the coast for a job I'm scouting and needed to grab a bite. Yelp gave me a highly rated "Po'Boys and Pickles", and, sure, I did my eye roll at what I assumed was another feeble attempt at New Orleans joint food, among my favorite and most poorly imitated food genres. I ordered a standard, the shrimp po-boy, to see how they dealt with the two toughest elements of that fine sandwich: the shrimp (need to be decent sized and actually taste like something, unlike farmed tiger prawns) and the bread (needs to be light and crispy). Well? They nailed it!! The shrimp were probably local Maine shrimp, a little smaller and sweeter than the gulf shrimp I'm used to, but actually tasted like shrimp and were an interesting change. The bread was a real surprise, some kind of sub or hoagie bread but SO light, and they must have given it a slight toasting, which as perfect. Leave off the tartar sauce, replace with mayo, splash liberally with Crystal, and throw on the pickles and you'll be on your way to the best Shrimp Po-Boy I've had outside of my home town. Very friendly people behind counter and all-around good vibes. Bravo!

    I've been a regular here for the past few months since moving to Portland. I called in 2 sandwiches and fries tonight and was quoted 15 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later, waited in line, and was told "I'd be charged when my food was ready". I stood to the side and waited, and waited, and waited. Seven additional orders were taken and food was delivered to two of them in the time I stood there waiting. Once the line was finally gone the woman looks at me and goes "oh your food is here". I get to the car and realize my fries were cold - the food was likely ready after order #3, but she chose to let all seven happen before giving me my food. All said and done it was 45 minutes from when I called before i had my food, and no apology for the delay. Po' Boys lost a regular customer today.

    How have I not reviewed this place sooner!?!? I am IN LOVE with this little sandwich shop. I've been visiting for years -- since right after they opened -- and my love has not dwindled. In fact, it has grown, since the staff remains friendly and approachable, the owner is regularly on hand (and really gets to know his customers), and the food is GOD DAMN AMAZING. Oh, and they added outdoor seating. Does it get any better!?!? (No.)

    First time ever going. Similar to fast food - just no drive thru and takes a little longer to get your food. Tried their fried pickles (absolutely AMAZING).. don't think I can speak highly enough of them. Also had their fried onions (very yummy). The Cajun fries which I've heard alot about were actually my least favorite of what I had - the further to the bottom of the basket you got the more herby the fries got and I only ate a few. For my regular meal I ordered the cheeseburger which was great and I normally don't get burgers when I eat out.. had alot of toppings and was decent size considering it was $6. All the sides are separate averaging about $4 a piece. Can eat in or outside.

    I came here for lunch as I had read good things about the place. I ordered a classic Italian sandwich with Cajun fries. I honestly made a rookie mistake by ordering this versus something with seafood or probably an actual Po' Boy so that probably influenced my rating of the place. The sandwich was just okay and the fries were a bit salty. I'll probably come back as this place certainly has a following and everyone can't be wrong, right?

    Why don't they make Po'boys shops like this in Cali?! We been tryin to find Po'boy shops similar to those in quality to the ones found in Nawlins and this is the closest we've come to it..     Whenever my boyfriend asks for lunch choices, I always include Po' Boys & Pickles. My go-to right now is the fried oyster salad with cajun ranch, his go-to is the dirty bird no lettuce and creole mustard instead of garlic mayo with a side of fries. I am itching to try a shake and the donut holes. We usually call ahead for take out, but I've dined in before, plenty of seating and now that it's nice out the patio is open.

    The food here is fantastic! I've been twice and had the fried oyster salad and fried onions the first time and had the peacemaker sandwich the second time - both were delicious! Food is ready quick and the staff is super friendly. The only thing to keep in mind is the menu that they posted here is outdated - prices have gone up a bit.

    there's nothing I love more than an oyster po boy and cajun fries. This place has been catching my eye since I moved to portland and was so happy to hear that they knew what they were doing. It did not disappoint. And I even got a vanilla custard milkshake after...was a perfect conclusion to my guilty pleasure meal!

    I love you so much. I try to limit myself to very few visits per year because if not, I would weigh a ton from all of the gravy fries I would consume. They are my favorite part of my meal every time I come in. The fries are crispy but can get a little soggy from being slathered in gravy. I don't mind that at all, it just makes them that much better. Obviously I have a gravy fry problem and need help... As for the sandwiches...I really love the Dirty Bird. It's roasted chicken, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a sub roll. I made the mistake of ordering a large one and then I made another mistake of eating the whole thing. A large is massive and could probably be shared, but apparently I was starving. The chicken has a roasted flavor and there was no shortage of bacon. I could say there was too much bacon (is that even possible??) but that would be crazy talk. The sandwich is simple perfection all around. I don't need fancy ingredients, just give me well-prepared delicious food. Don't forget to try out the doughnut holes with chocolate sauce. My only complaint would be not enough chocolate sauce! They are perfect to share and a nice little treat at the end of your meal...if you have enough room left for them!

    Nice, casual restaurant serving New Orleans inspired food. Don't do what I did; I'm a little ashamed, frankly. I was trying for a "lighter" dish and had the Dirty Chicken. It was solid, but basic and not exciting. I don't know where the "dirty" was. If you go order something more traditionally New Orleans. That said, even a chicken sandwich can be made with interesting flavors.

    1/2 stars We found this place driving home from a trip-great for one last blow out! The shrimp po' boy was fantastic! The fried shrimp was super tasty and the whole soft roll, Cajun mayo, shredded lettuce combo was delicious. We had one misorder-the falafel sandwich. Not a worthwhile order. Stick with their specialities. The fried pickles were worth the try as well. We'd love to go back and try more, but distance and diet won't allow it any time soon! Worth a stop if you're in the area.

    I kind of can't wait to go back here. I took my mom and 2 year old son a few weekends ago and we all loved it. I had the blackened fish salad, my mom had some sort of pork sandwich, and my son had an enormous grilled cheese. We all shared the fries and fried onions. Everything was absolutely delicious and there are so many more items that I want to try! It's kind of a small place so I imagine it gets pretty busy at times. Luckily we went at a good time on a Saturday and had a late lunch and were able to get a table without waiting.

    Po' Boys is a great sandwich shop at a convenient location outside of downtown Portland. The staff is always friendly and in a fantastic mood, which makes this place even better to come to. The Louisiana-style sandwich shop has many different sandwiches to fulfill your hunger. A 6-inch sandwich will probably set you back $6-$8, but it's loaded with great food and amazing taste. I've tried many of their sandwiches and haven't come across a bad one. Plus, Po' Boys and Pickles offers fantastic Cajan fries ($3.25), Gumbo ($5.95), and a Coconut Macaroon that is to die for! The Coconut Macaroon is the ultimate combination of sweet and buttery. And at only $1, you can't go wrong. The place is decked out in New Orleans-themed decorations, with my favorite being the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl Champs front page newspaper article. This place also features Crystal Hot Sauce. For those of you who don't know, Crystal is a fantastic hot sauce and rare treat usually only found in Louisiana. It gives any Cajan-style food an extra, authentic kick! I've never heard a bad review about this place out of anyone I've talked to. I highly recommend giving this place a shot. You won't regret it.

    There sandwiches and fried pickles are amazing. I'd go back every day if it was a little cheaper. A large sandwich is expensive but will easily fill you up. However if you want a good meal get a regular size with some of their sides, it's worth it!

    I really enjoyed everything about this place. From the cute and catchy name to the delicious food! It's a small, casual place that serves New Orleans style poboys and salads. Being from the south I was happy to stumble across this gem while here in Maine. The service was friendly and quick. There was a small outdoor seating area with picnic style tables. It wasn't much of a view with the ongoing traffic but it was a sunny day so all was good. I ordered the regular size blackened fish poboy, Cajun fries, and a heineken draft. The sandwich was on a crusty bread, the fish was seasoned perfectly, topped with slaw and a spicy mayo. The fries were a large portion and had tons of Cajun seasoning. The beer was ice cold and really hit the spot. The total for my lunch was close to $20- a little expensive but enjoyable all the same. I'm positive I will be back to sample more of the menu!

    This place caught me completely by surprise and I'm so glad I found it! Having spent a few months in New Orleans, I developed a soft spot for po'boys and find myself to be on a never ending journey to satisfy my cravings for these signature sandwiches hundreds of miles away. This shop has some great traditional sandwich options as well as some creative twists. Overall, I was pleased with the quality of my fried oyster and shrimp sandwich choice, and the service was good. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the greater Portland area.

    It was the day before Christmas 2013. My husband and I were spending the day around town with my dad. We were taking their suggestions on where to eat that day. (his breakfast recommendation of "the egg and I" had gone over quite well.) He had suggested this place many times before, but we had always gone to some of our other favourite places first. This time, we listened. Much like his recommendation of El Rayo Taco, dad once again named a divine pearl. The space is kinda small, but in a cozy way. It has two unisex bathrooms and the soda machine is out to provide FREE refills while you eat. The staff are indeed friendly and our food was actually brought to our table by the lady who was at the register when we ordered. My regular sized fried shrimp Po' Boy was magnificent!! Soft bread, light tartar sauce that tasted scratch made, loaded for bear with shrimp that was breaded and fried perfectly, and using shrimp so fresh that the pallet sings. (No, I'm not exaggerating. I'm a writer and a foodie.) My husband will have to review his, because with a portion like this, I was filled to perfection with my own. We three did share an order of gravy fries, which we all agreed were much saltier than expected...tasty, but too salty. This has made the favorites list for the next summer visit!

    I went for the Crawfish event. It rained but they raged it anyways! They had a great deal on little basket of crawfish and a can of shipyard beer. Tasty little crawfish, not the spiciest I've ever had but good nonetheless. I only also tried the fried pickles and donut holes with chocolate sauce so I'm no authority on their menu. However, I really liked the fried pickles and I'm not a huge fried pickle fan. The atmosphere is sort of fast food feeling but they have beer. Thus far I'm giving them a 4 star because I enjoyed myself. I'm going to have to go back for a normal meal. So this one is TBC...

    I don't remember writing my earlier nonsense. The Po' Boys and Pickles muffaletta hasn't changed. I have. In case you were wondering, which you have not, I've spent the last few years traveling far and wide to find a great muffaletta. I can now definitively say this is by far the best and ONLY muffaletta in Portland maybe even the the whole fine state of Maine. The pickled vegetable relish is spot and the bread is damn near perfect. I would recommend getting the large and letting it set a day which I believe is part of the preferred preparation method. Two meals in one sandwich not a bad deal.

    AMAZING fried pickles! Super friendly and quick service... feels very comfortable in the restaurant. Lots of local beers available. I had "the peacemaker"... a fried shrimp and scallop sandwich. The seafood was freshly breaded and fried - the red pepper mayo was an excellent touch. I can't wait to try more!

    I went after seeing all the great reviews on Yelp and I was very disappointed. The service and atmosphere was great, but the food wasn't quite as good. I tried their Gumbo, Cajun fish Nuggets basket, and Cajun fries. The gumbo was ok, but I've definitely had better. The Cajun Nuggets were pretty bland; it really just tasted like deep-fried salted fish; there wasn't much other flavor to their cajun seasoning. Perhaps I will give it another try for their sandwiches.

    I've eaten here before and had a great time, but this time was awful. If three sandwiches are going to take thirty minutes, they should be perfect. Turns out the sandwiches were just hanging out while the fries were being made. Fries were the only thing that came out hot. Pulled pork, fried oysters, and soft shell crab were all lukewarm, sitting in soggy bread. Pretty disappointed. With so many great places to eat in Portland, I doubt I'd go back here.

    Chose this place passing through town because it looked fast, kid friendly , cheap and good - based on Yelp reviews. Fast? Not. Friendly - not really. Waited 45-50 minutes for 4 sandwiches and fries. They were tasty, but ridiculous wait totally screwed our travel time. The couple next to us came in 15 minutes after us, were served RIGHT after we were, and were given coupons and sincere apologies for the wait. We were offered nothing. Delicious sandwiches, but not a good experience.

    If there's a good Chinese restaurant in Maine, I haven't found it yet; but the one Louisianaian one I've stumbled across, Po' Boys and Pickles, is The Awesomes. Everything we tried was great, the staff and decor and stuff have significant clue... I could go on, but I will just say that praline bacon can be added to any sandwich. That says it all.

    The fried shrimp and oyster po' boy was insane. The roast beef and gravy po' boy was insane (needed pepper but whatever). The bread, I was going to ask if it was freshly baked there but I was too busy eating it and drifting off into a sandwich nirvana.     Yummy and great customer service! I had the shrimp po boy with pickles and got some cajun honey chicken wings. That po boy had the best fixings..lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, and pickles! Pickles make it worthwhile :) The wings were seasoned to perfection and the blue cheese was a nice touch.

    Outrageously good! Any place that has the option to add a fried egg or bacon to a Po' boy at $1 is ok with me ! Ordered Peacemaker sandwich (basically fried shrimp poboy). Bread was crunchy outside, fresh and flavorful in inside. Shrimp and oysters fried in corn meal. Red pepper mayo was great but didn't stop me from pouring on the Crystal brand Louisiana hot sauce. Added Cajun fries - perfectly seasoned, twice fried. Comfort food to the nth degree. The attention to detail here is off the charts without any hint of pretense. Classic Portland sandwich shop look, but the food is anything but standard. Somebody here REALLY cares about the ingredients. So much love goes into the prep it felt like eating a big hug. This will now be a regular stop for me anytime I'm in Portland. Just incredible. Btw, Monday Tuesday $2.50 draft beer all day. Dude.... Well done Po'Boys &Pickles!!

    I get very concerned when it comes to "authentic" food. For me, the word authentic is not limited to food originated from foreign countries. Po' Boys and Pickles claims that their sandwiches are like New Orleans. When a place suggests things like that, well, they better live up to it., because if not, the customer not only gets disappointed by the taste of food, but also disappointed about even the "origin" of that food. If I have ever been to New Orleans, I may have been able to write a more "accurate" review about its authenticity. Alas, I have never been to New Orleans. Fortunately, my pulled pork sandwich, fried oyster sandwich, sweet potato fries, and milk shakes were SO GOOD, that Po' Boys and Pickles made me want to go to New Orleans and thank them for creating such wonderful food. And also want me to come back for more soon. Yay!

    Righteous ! Heard the owner on the PM-JAB as I was barreling through on my way Down East. They've been on my list for 2 years and yesterday I finally made it in. I mean who even tries to make Po Boys up North? Freakin yea they nailed it. Got the Peacemaker (oysters and shrimp) regular size and devoured it. They fried it perfectly as it had the exact crunch ratio I expected. The red pepper mayo was tasty and not overpowering; there's a bottle of hots on the table so you can dial it up yourself. And the danged bread was spot on; the dude tells me they have it shipped up frozen from some bakery in N'awlins, then they complete the baking on premises. Again the right crunch on the outside, chewy goodness inside. I wish I could have downed a few beers with the Po Boy, sat on the couch and watched TV, but alas 2 more hours to go for Beantown. Ya gotta head North for some righteous southern classics. I'll be back to work my way through their menu. Thanks dude.

    My boyfriend and I were just driving through Portland on our way home from a weekend trip and wanted to have an excellent final meal in Maine. We decided on Po' Boys and Pickles because of the great reviews and we were so happy with our meal. It is close to both I-95 and I-295 making it very easy to get to. The two people working were super friendly and there was a steady stream of customers. I got the blackened fish and my boyfriend got the roast beef. We also got sides of Cajun french fries and Cajun coleslaw. Including two sodas it was only $22! The regular size sandwich is the perfect amount because there is so much packed in. The flavor combinations were awesome and I wanted to try so many other sandwiches (pulled pork, fried shrimp, meatloaf). I'm tempted to make the drive to Portland for lunch!

    Po' Boys and Pickles is a much needed addition to Portland's Cajun food scene which, until recently, has been more or less limited to the Bayou Kitchen (which is also outstanding). I've been there a couple of times and in both instances I did take-out. That said, there is a spacious and clean dining area for patrons to use. In both of my visits, I've found the counter and kitchen staff to be fast, efficient, friendly and polite. The food, for the most part, has been excellent. I've been particularly fond of the seafood offerings -- specifically, the shrimp po' boy and the blackened fish po' boy. Both sandwiches feature a spicy coleslaw that is simply out of this world. You can order sides of french fries or sweet potato fries. I prefer french fries and have found PB&P's fries to be some of the best in Portland. And at $2.50 for a huge order, its a real steal. The one area where I feel that PB&P could use a little bit of improvement is on the roast beef ("debris") and pork sandwiches. Both packed plenty of flavor, but I felt that the meat in both sandwiches could have been just a little more tender. When we tried these sandwiches, we thought the pork and beef both had a consistency of meat that had been taken out of a slow cooker about an hour too soon. Plus, the roast beef in the debris sandwich had a couple of big chunks of fat that we really couldn't chew through. This minor complaint aside, we've been delighted with every other dish that we've sampled at Po' Boys & Pickles.

    This is simply a great sandwich shop. The best pulled pork. The best Creole sausage sandwich. The Debris sandwich - great! I've tried about 6 different kinds and very much like them all - some a little more than the others but no misses. My only knock is that I wasn't too excited about the jambalaya or the fries otherwise on sandwiches alone - 5 stars! The employees are all very cool as well and provide very good, friendly service.

    A great sandwich shop off the beaten path. Its a couple miles away from Downtown Portland but worth the trip. Had the regular size muffaleta po boy while my girlfriend ordered the peacemaker. The muffaleta had ham, salami, capicola with some mozzarella cheese. The meats were grilled which added a nice touch. Thought the sandwich was going to be cold, but glad it wasn't. The peacemaker was an amazing sandwich. The shrimp and oysters were fried very well. The batter was super crunchy and just a bit sweet. But what set this sandwich apart was the red pepper mayo. Took it to another level! We saw they had milkshakes as well while we were sitting at one of the high top tables eating our sandwiches. Decided to get a key lime pie milkshake. It was also very good. Had little graham cracker crumbs mixed in to give it that authentic feel. Decently priced and they have beers to accompany your juicy sandwich!

    The service is fantastic. Wait staff is very friendly, and the food is even better. The location is very easy to find, but the restaurant is so unanimously loved that it's small parking lot is sometimes not accommodating enough for all it's patrons. While Po' Boy & Pickles does serve beer (yay!), it seems to be a place that both young and old feel comfortable in. A great lunch spot.

    Amazing pulled pork sandwich! I have had my fair share of pulled pork as it is one of my go to sandwiches. I reckon the one I had yesterday is easily in my top 2 pulled pork sandwiches of all time. So simple, yet so good. I think the bread is a main factor in the deliciousness and the pulled pork itself was spot on. I wish this place was on the street where I live! Besides the pulled pork sandwich I also tried the beet salad which was fresh and scrumptious as well. Nice, friendly people running the show and we have ourselves a fantastic lunch. A note on the atmosphere is that this is a casual joint with some outdoor seating and all high top tables on the inside.

    Po' Boys is one of those places that I never think to go to, and then someone mentions it and can't stop thinking about it until I eventually make it over there for a sandwich. My personal favorites are The Peacemaker (fried oyster and shrimp with lettuce, tomato and red pepper mayo) and the Blackened Fish, which has cajun cole slaw and red pepper mayo. A tip for those who like to spice things up - you can ask for fries (or anything that's fried) to be cajun style, or spicy - I don't know what the official terminology is, but I'm sure they'll get what you're trying to say, since it's always worked for me. If you can, go with a friend and share. Their sandwiches come in small and large sizes. The large sizes are affordable (between $11 and $13) and will save you a few bucks if you can agree on one sandwich and split it with someone. Share some fries. I'm normally all for leftovers, but I would imagine most of their sandwiches get pretty soggy if left to sit, so don't order more than you're ready to eat right away. This is not a place for vegetarians, although it looks like they have falafel if you end up here. They also have lots of fried goodies including sweet potatoes and pickles, so you'll survive. When it's nice, sit outside at the patio. There are also a few picnic tables in back. Oh, and they have $2 drafts Sunday-Tuesday, last I checked.

    Tastes just like New Orleans' Po' Boys! What a great find! Slightly outside of downtown Portland it is well worth the 10 minute drive. My husband and I ordered one shrimp and one oyster po'boy. We also ordered a basket of fried pickles, which were very good! Monday night they had $2 pints on tap. Everything was great! If we lived closer, we would visit often!

    We stopped into this restaurant for lunch on a Sunday. The place is very misleading from the outside - it is actually pretty nice inside! Very casual place - You order your food at the counter and sit down and they bring it out to you. The food was great - I had the golden fried fish po'boy and my husband had the dirty bird.     Delicious, hot foot prepared in a reasonable amount of time. I had a Debris Boy, pot roast with horseradish mayo and a side of fried pickles. The meat was tender, the roll was fresh and the pickles were a nice salty counter point. Cheap beers and a clean dining room were the cappers on a great dinner. This was the best sandwich I've had so far in Portland and I will definitely return.

    This place is fantastic. The menu has a wide variety of delicious foods at reasonable prices. I love that the sandwiches, which are all far more tasty and interesting than your traditional sub shop, come in small and large sizes. The fried pickles (a favorite of mine) are fantastic. The service is friendly, and everyone working there always looks reasonably happy (something I try to look out for). Despite living in Portland for a while, I only just started eating here, and I'm excited to try every item on the menu. A word to the wise: These guys make some fantastic food, not all of which is great for takeout/delivery. Order carefully when not eating in-house, or better yet: go eat there. A sandwich with gravy on it going to be soggy by the time it gets to your house. A milkshake will not be perfectly frosty or delicious. Your piping hot chili cheese-fries will have cooled. There are no great solutions to this (getting everything possibly soggy on the side might be one), so I don't fault the restaurant, but it is something to pay attention to in order to get the best experience possible.

    The unspoken surprise treat here? Coconut macaroon. A buck a piece for this delicious, buttery coconutty goodness is too good to be true. I really liked this place. I enjoyed my blackened fish po' boy. Though I found a TAD salty, it was cooked to perfection, great bread, perfectly sauced slaw on top and served with the tastiest pickles, and their fried pickles are also amazing (with the whole grain mustard). The breading of the fried pickles had great texture (corn meal!) and flavor which was a nice change (sweetish to counter the salty pickle) to typical battered and fried items that are typically bland. This coating was not at all bland which gives them extra brownie points. Oh, their $2 drafts are pretty darn rad, too. Yeah, I said rad. They got me at $2 drafts, macaroons and outdoor seating. Take me, I'm yours. Oh, and they're pretty darn friendly.

    Was ready to do some hatin' on this place. D'Angelo was a staple of my diet when I lost 80lbs a few years back. And Po' Boys & Pickles is certainly not the place to go to eat healthy. Mission failed - I loved it. Had the Debris Po'Boy (roast beef, lettuce, tomato, horseradish mayo) - normally they add gravy. First bite and I was ecstatic. Juicy, tangy flavor - just awesome. And the mustard pickles they serve with the sandwich... unique and kick ass. Reasonable prices. Not a bargain. Not overpriced. Some good happy hour specials from 4-6pm. Shipyard on tap is a big plus I'm sure for many. Can't wait to try some other stuff there. For now, 5 stars.

    While spending some time in Portland, I decided to grab some dinner. However, I wanted to try something a little different than what one would find around Old Port, and hopefully something that seems to be a place the locals would go to. So I fired up my trusty Yelp app and drove down Forest Avenue until I found Po' Boys and Pickles. Po' Boys and Pickles is a Cajun type of place, which serves a lot more than just po' boys. However, it was a po' boy that I ordered. I decided to order the Creole sausage sandwich, which was scrumptious, but the sausage patties had a tendency to slide out of my sandwich, so that was a minor inconvenience. I also ordered the beverage of the day, a fresh mint limeade, which was quite refreshing. I'd certainly come back here again the next time I'm in town.

    I don't get this far up into Maine often so when I do, I wanna make it worthwhile. Well Fore was out of my price range and the thought of a po' boy in Maine tickled my fancy, so it was decided. I was in a pinch because I couldn't split a sandwich (I was with Mr. Picky). It was really hard to choose just one sandwich so I ordered 2 and figured I'd eat half and take half home. That left room for some extra's as well. He got the pulled pork sans coleslaw. I got the Creole sausage and the muffaletta po' boy. All the sandwiches were good but not so good that I'm dreaming of another 1-1/2 hour drive just to get another. If I did end up back in Portland, I would go back and try some of their other sandwich offerings just to try the ones I missed this visit. We had to get an order of fried pickles (hello, the name is po' boys and PICKLES!). Strangely, these were better reheated the next day. The cajun coleslaw side was pretty darn good. The buffalo wings were small and just OK. The BF also got a shake (they had about 6 flavors the day we went. At $3.75 for a large, the price wasn't bad. He said he's had better and he's had worse. The best part overall was the dessert. I got a "world famous" coconut macaroon and a sticky toffee pudding (for later). They were both quite yummy though I'm sure travel didn't help the pudding, it may have been better eaten fresh that day.

    I never had a cooked oyster before or gumbo for that matter, but decided to be adventurous. Truly out of this world was the oysters over salad. The pickled green beans and lemon slice really balanced the cajun ranch dressing. Oysters fried to perfection. Less creepy than raw. The gumbo was smokey and nice. I tried a splash of hot sauce. I was disappointed that they no longer had "Crystal's" on the table, so I didnt end up adding any to the Gumbo. Nice place, decent booze selection, and efficient staff during the lunch crush.

    This place was amazing I got the fried shrimp and my girl got the blackened fish sandwich which were both amazing in flavor. The prices were also very reasonable for seafood. The only thing I have to say is the dining room was small but doable just push some tables together if you have a party larger than 3. The atmosphere was great everyone was friendly and the service was great as well. I would suggest making a stop here in the very near future if you get a chance.     We ate here for the first time last November when we brought the kids up to Portland for Coast City Comic Con. Our friends are NOLA natives and they found this place by pure accident. Everybody was thrilled the first time out, with the exception of my very picky daughter. We loved it so much, we decided to stop in again last week on the way back from our annual camping trip. This time we had her try the buffalo wings and she said they're the best she's ever had! I had the oyster po' boy, which was unbelievable. The oysters were as good as anything I've gotten on the North Shore. I have to say, one of my favorite things this time out was the garnish of pickled vegetables. I'd never had a pickled Brussels sprout before. So. Darn. Good! This place will definitely be an annual tradition.

    I am lucky enough to work just down the street so I get to sample the menu quite often. I have never had anything here that is a disappointment. The food is fantastic and the service is always excellent. Most specifically, the gumbo to die for (especially on a cold Maine winter day), biscuits, macaroons and the little pickles are heaven sent. The ONLY thing I'd change about the place is for them to also offer Etouffee. (Which is my all time favourite Cajun dish.) Other than that, this place is perfect.

    I came in and ordered the Fried Oyster Po Boy (regular size, about 6"), and a side of cajun fries. It was totally awesome. Oysters were fried perfectly. Their pickles are briney as hell, and totally delicious. Their fries were just right. Crispy on outside, juicy on the inside. My cohorts got fried pickles (awesome), and gravy fries (mega awesome). This place does $2 drafts on Monday and Tuesday nights. Why they aren't closer to downtown is a mystery to me, but, the retrofitted D'Angelos building really works out. Love the outside deck. Go to Po' Boys and Pickles, forget that fried food is bad for you, and just enjoy yourself damn it. I loved this place.

    Was in Maine visiting my sister-in-law, she recommended this local sandwich spot for dinner. I had the muffaletta, sweet potato fries and the Shipyard Summer Ale. The sweet potato fries were very good; above average! The muffaletta was amazing, it had a unique veggie relish and the meats were top of the line. Quite possibly the best sandwich I've ever had. Shipyard Summer Ale was a perfect compliment to the sandwich. This is a must visit spot in Portland!

    I ordered from Po' Boys and Pickles because they had fried pickles on the menu. I was expecting fried dill pickle spears, instead I got the little hamburger-style pickles which were a total disappointment. The breading lacked flavor and the pickles were so small (and so few) it really wasn't worth it. I could have just eaten pickles on saltine crackers and have gotten the same experience. In addition, I ordered the felafel sandwich. It was dry as a bone, the sauce was non-existent, it was a total fail. I hear that the main reason to come here is for the pulled pork sandwich - so if that's your thing, go for it. Otherwise, beware.

    Stopped in to Po'Boys and Pickles for lunch recently while in Portland. It looks like your typical fast food place when you go in and there are not a lot of tables inside. The menu though is much different than a typical fast food place. They had all of the New Orleans staples: gumbo, oyster and shrimp po boys, mufaletta, etc. It was hard to decide what to get because everything sounded good. I ended up getting the blackened fish sandwich, my DH got the gumbo and we split some fries. The fish was good, but I was a little disappointed with the seasoning. It didn't have a lot of flavor and was not spicy at all. I had to add quite a bit of hot sauce to it. The fries were delicious though and the DH enjoyed his gumbo. I stole one of my friends sweet potato fries and they were excellent. Bonus - you can get a beer or glass or wine with your lunch as well.

    Who doesn't love a good sandwich ? Satisfying and filling a sandwich is the ultimate comfort food. And one of the Kings of sandwiches is the New Orleans Po' Boy. On 1124 Forest Avenue in Portland Maine there is small joint that strives to give you this taste of the Bayou, and its called (of course) Po'Boys and Pickles. Simone and I went to Po' Boys and Pickles after we had an afternoon of rock wall climbing and we had built a pretty good appetite. This sandwich shop did not let us down. At Po'Boys the service is part counter and part waited table service. When you walk in you walk up to the counter, check the menu board and give them your order. You then find your seat and they find you when the food is ready. There are many sandwich options, all of them unique with toppings. All sandwiches come with sliced pickles on the side. The pickles are made in house and are delicious (this coming from me who doesn't normally enjoy them). Have them on there own, or as my wife did, stuff them into the sandwich. There also many options for sides to go with your sandwich. Fries, Rings, Slaw, Fried Pickles, etc..For our orders, Simone decided on the Dirty Bird ( because she like the way the name rolled off her tongue) and I went with the Reggie Loaf ( because I like Reggie?) We also choose to have a side of Gravy Fries and also some house made Praline Crusted Bacon (hell yea). In reverse order, the sandwiches arrived first, then the fries and then the bacon. I figured this must be what its like being in the French Quarters of New Orleans. The sandwiches were large and stuffed full. Simone's Dirty Bird had seasoned roasted chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato with pickled garlic mayo. There was more perfectly crisp Bacon in this sandwich then on most truckers breakfast plates which was fine because it tasted so good. The roasted chicken was also moist and the garlic mayo was actually very mild and added to the sandwich instead of overpowering it. The Reggie Loaf consisted of two 1/2 inch slices of house meatloaf, topped with gravy, french fries, lettuce, tomato and Horseradish mayo. The meatloaf was moist and perfectly seasoned, the fries were still crispy in the sandwich even when drizzled with the gravy, and the Horseradish mayo had just enough kick but was not overpowering. Again, another great Sandwich. The bread roll on both our sandwiches was also surprisingly light and airy on the inside and nice and crusty on the outside. A sandwich is only as good as the bread its served on and this bread was perfect to soak up all the juices from the sandwiches.On the side, our Gravy Fries were crispy ( at least at the top of the bowl) and the gravy flavorful. We finished off the entire bowl. The Praline Bacon ( which I also suggest adding to your sandwich) was decadently sweet with half melted crumbles of brown sugar coating it. Some peaces could have been crispier but that didn't stop me from finishing it all. Amazingly, we finished our entire meal but left no room for dessert. Maybe next time. Po' Boys and Pickles was a great find, and a very satisfying meal.

    This place is outstanding! We decided to give them a try tonight since we were in the area. It's always exciting when you find a restaurant with great quality food at a reasonable price, and Po' Boys definitely fits that description. My wife and I each ordered a sandwich (one oyster and one blackened fish) and they were both incredible. The buns were amazingly fresh and they were served with what seemed like homemade pickles. We also ordered a side of Cajun fries. These were nicely spiced and perfectly fried. To top it off, they had $2 drafts so we each ordered a beer. All this for around $22. Shizzah! We will definitely be returning again and again. What an incredible find!!

    This place is awesome. I am a bit partial, my husband works here, but this is coming from a pretty picky eater, so I figure the two balance each other out. My son and I (he's 11) go to eat there once a week. He LOVES the Cheeseburger Stack (when I'm not making him choose something different off the menu) and I love the dirty bird, roasted chicken salad, sweet potato fries, chili fries...pretty much everything :) Excellent pricing, even better service (duh), great atmosphere and your food is fast to come out of the kitchen. Enjoy!

    I got a Surf and Turf (fried shrimp and roast beef with gravy) with extra pickles and pickled okra. I like things that are pickled and they are darn good at pickling veggies. The sandwich was good, but I didn't think it was absolutely amazing other than the portion and quality of the ingredients. A bit bland, in my opinion. But really, they get 4 stars for the pickles and pickled okra alone. I'll try another sandwich next time, as well as the gumbo.

    I agree with all the praise being bestowed upon this restaurant. I had lunch here a couple of days ago and loved every single bite. The fried oyster po boy was fresh and delicious with perfectly fried oysters (about 7-8 on the small sub) with nice pepper mayo. The chili was hearty and tasty although not particularly spicy, it improved with about 10 shakes of hot sauce. The cajun fries were super crispy and hot, with wonderful flavor. I can't wait to get back to this place!

    Any review of Po' Boys and Pickles should start with a thought somewhere along the lines of, "I never expected a little sandwich shop on Forest Ave to be making anything even remotely similar to what I think of as an authentic New Orleans Po' Boy, but my goodness, wasn't I pleasantly surprised." Unfortunately, I can't begin our review this way for two reasons. First, anyone who has spent any time reading Portland area food writing knows, from the very beginning, that Po' Boys and Pickles is no slouch when it comes to frying up seafood and laying it on a roll. And second, I don't have any idea what "authentic" New Orleans Po' Boys are like, at all. Sure, I spent the weekend in New Orleans once, hanging off of balconies and soaking myself in sickly-sweet, syrupy Hurricanes served in comically oversized novelty cups. Why, I once even drove a U-Haul through the Southern states. But I don't know my remoulade from my tarter sauce. When I think of the sandwiches I've eaten down South that fit the "Po' Boy" description, my memory calls up ridiculously oversized sandwiches, flooded with some kind of white sauce, and three or four gigantic fried oysters, that either explode burning ocean into your mouth on first bite, or are chewy to the point of making the whole sandwich-eating experience frustrating and confusing. In spite of what I thought I knew about Po' Boys and Pickles from coverage in other local area food blogs, I was still pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere of the restaurant. There are a few tables outside, to soak up some of this last late-Summer weather. Where I expected, for whatever reason, a cold, gray, cafeteria atmosphere on the inside, we were instead greeted by a very friendly, outgoing staff, in an open kitchen working underneath several giant black chalkboards, with the menu scrawled in chalk in an appropriately New Orleans-style, wacky handwriting. We ordered two "regular" sized Po' Boys, one oyster, and one shrimp. (Okay, to be clear, I ordered "Poor Boys," which always makes me feel silly, but not as silly as I think I would feel saying "Po' Boys" out loud. Look, I don't say, "Nawlins," either. Why? Because I don't talk that way. And frankly, neither do you.) A side of fried pickles, a Brooklyn lager, and a Capt. Eli's Root Beer later, and we were in for $23.54 . After about 10 minutes, one of the staff brought our lunches to the table. Jillian's oyster Po' Boy wasn't like anything I had seen. Instead of big, wet oysters with soggy breading clinging limply to a bun, Jillian's sandwich was piled high with little round balls of fried perfection. The oysters were small enough to make the fried-batter-outside-to-soft-salty-inside ratio exactly perfect. Similarly, my shrimp were the ideal size: not big enough to need two bites, but not those sad little 70-count flavorless "cocktail" shrimp, either. Like the oysters, the shrimp were seasoned nicely, battered in cornmeal, and fried precisely the right amount, with good color and crunch. Both sandwiches were topped with cool, crunchy iceberg lettuce, and slices of ripe tomato, which was a bit of a surprise for this time of year. The bread hit a nice middle ground between the kind of soft hero rolls I am used to seeing in these parts, and the kind of baguette that would be too crusty and chewy for this kind of sandwich. These rolls had a nice bit of resistance on the outside, which gave way to just enough chew in the middle. Each sandwich was topped with a satisfying smear of sauce; red pepper mayo on Jillian's oyster sandwich, and tartar sauce on my shrimp. I would be hard pressed to describe the difference between the two sauces, however, there isn't enough to overwhelm, and I don't think of either sauce as being the star of the sandwich. The main event, here, is the fried seafood, and it's nice to see a sauce that doesn't compete with that or turn your sandwich into a big, gloppy mess. Po' Boys and Pickles also makes sure each table has a bottle of Crystal hot sauce, if you want to dial up the spiciness of your sandwich. Regarding the pickles: We weren't blown away by the basket of fried pickles, battered, fried, and served with both a whole grain mustard and some kind of mystery, creamy-cool dipping sauce. They were fried nicely, but cut into chips, which resulted in kind of a dry pickle. I prefer my fried pickles cut in spears; they stay a little burstier, and you can freak out your mouth with the unexpected sensation of warm dill spear. The small cup of pickles that accompany each Po' Boy, however, were delightful: sliced thinly, and not overly brined. Each pickle chip made my cheeks pucker with vinegary goodness, and the contrast with the salty fried shrimp was wonderful. So the big question: Is Po' Boys and Pickles serving authentic New Orleans-style fried seafood Po' boys? Miunno. Po' Boys and Pickles is, however serving unbelievably delicious, crunchy oyster and shrimp sandwiches.

    So we have been in a slump with going out to eat. We haven't tried any new local places in a long time, so after seeing "The Phoenix" voting list of best places to eat, we decided to try one yesterday. My husband and I were very happy with Po' Boys and Pickles. Friendly service, very quick with our food, and the prices were reasonable. But most importantly our tummies were HAPPY! Kale got the Dirty Bird, and I tried the Wings. Both yummy! We shared the Gumbo - YUM! Our kids shared the two items on their Kids Menu - Grilled Cheese and another sandwich with ham and swiss. We wish we tried the fries - they looked yummy! The only negative thing is that it is not as kid friendly as we would hope. They tables are high tops, so my 16 month old baby had to sit in daddy's lap. So Daddy didn't have the greatest time eating his sandwich. And if you ever had a 16 month old, all they want to do is move around. Bear does pretty good when he is strapped in a high chair, so it would of been nice to have lower tables and high chairs at this place. We will definitely go back, but we will bring a booster chair to strap our kid in! :)

    Great sandwiches. Tried the Big Chief, tasty roast beef melted in my mouth. Great bread. Recommend trying the salted carmel milkshake. Our takeout order was messed up, took the wrong order home, when we returned they had our ordered food, compted and told us to keep the other order. Great customer service!

    I can't stop eating at this place. The crew who work there are amazingly friendly, efficient, and even hilarious at times. On multiple, multiple visits, neither I, nor any of my friends or family members in various parties have ever been vaguely dissatisfied with anything we have ever ordered, and we've been all over the menu like stink on a monkey. We have come to the belief that the blackened fish sandwich and the blackened fish salad may be among the very best things that one can eat in Portland. And, the prices are great, contrary to the opinion of another reviewer. This blackened fish sandwich of which I write--the apotheosis of pollock--is priced at just $6.25 for the 'regular' size as of this writing. This for a great piece of fish, perfectly cooked, and seasoned amazingly well, with coleslaw, pickles, tomatoes, and the best sandwich roll in the city. One can order a larger size in most sandwiches for an additional amount, and one should do this if one has a giant appetite, a tapeworm, a job digging ditches, or the ability to dislocate one's jaw like a python swallowing an adolescent pig... or a yen for delicious sandwiches that one can't stop eating... This place knocks it out of the park time after time. It is consistent, clean, and serves food of the highest quality every single time. This place is, and I mean this, my favorite place to eat in Portland.

    I am a total fiend for their mufaletta sandwich. The fries with gravy or chili are awesome. The red beans are so full of flavor, although the spice level can vary which can be tricky for the kids. I am also not a fan of the pickles, which are a sweet version. I really want this place to open a branch on the peninsula. Or maybe I don't (as I look down at my waistline!)

    As an expatriate New Orleanian, one of the things I really miss is po-boys (especially fried oyster po-boys). Now if you've eaten many po-boys, there is something about the bread. New Orleans "French bread" is essential to the thing. Can't be done with a baguette or anything else. Everything else here is good, but in my book, these guys really get full marks for actually getting New Orleans style French bread. I think they have it shipped in or something. Anyway I look forward to stopping in here every time I pass by (or even get reasonably close).

    My friend and I entered Po Boys and was greeted with a smile and the food was amazing , service was amazing , the restaurant was super clean so why the 3 star rating ??? For 2 sandwiches and a side of chili-cheese fries (Water to drink ) the amount was just over $30 !!! $30 , Really ?? Who spends $30 for a 2 sandwich lunch , or even lunch for that matter ! Will return when I get my Tax return because the food is amazing but unless you have a trust fund , just be warned of the "sticker shock" ! (Oh to be fair , we ordered the full sandwich rather then the half sandwich and there are no sides included with the sandwiches except a small cup of 4 pickle chips . )

    I stopped in for the first time earlier this week with my wife. Happy to report that we were not disappointed. I had the Dirty Bird and my wife had the Big Chief. Both were fantastic as were the pickles. The staff was friendly, the food was great, what more can you ask for from a sandwich spot?

    While the gumbo leaves a bit to be desired by this child of Cajun Louisiana, the po boy style sandwiches are awesome, and a place that sells boudin balls truly has some real Cajun know-how to back it up and isn't just playing games with a name. Try the sticky toffee pudding; not Cajun and, if anything South Louisiana, maybe a little creole, but it's good nonetheless and that's what it's all about!

    So I am heading down Forest Ave this afternoon and decided to stop in here for a quick bite. After ordering a reg sandwich, gumbo and soda. That in itself was over 17 dollars which I felt was quite a bit.... I headed to the soda fountain to get my drink. As I turn I notice the most amazing site of all. There is a person eating a meal and he has a small dog sitting on the table. Yes you heard right. A dog with it's private parts sitting right there on a dinner table. First I say to myself. Hmm this is the eclectic Po boys but then I realize that does not matter it is a resturant with a dog on the table. So I decided to tell the person who helped me. Long story short; after asking to talk to the owner and told they were not there. I asked for them to call him. As I sat waiting for my food I got more and more anxious that there was nothing being done to remedy this. From my talking to the person who took my order, I was getting that this is normal operation and the owner knew about it and allows it. The workers all did nothing as well. With nothing to be done to change the situation I asked for my money back and left. Not before another person had already come and gone without buying anything when they saw the dog on the table as well. I haveceaten here before and had very good food yet I don't think I will ever eat there again.

    The service was nice. Everything is made to order so you can customize your sandwich. I got the peacemaker which came with fried oyster and shrimp. It was a little on the greasy side but I should have realized that. The large sandwich is huge. I'm pretty sure I would have been full with the regular size. Just an FYI for everyone going here for the first time.

    I'm only giving a 3 star rating today because of the service. The girl working the front was very cranky. I stood by waiting for my order and had a birds eye view. She just did not want to be there! I also witnessed one of the cooks berate a delivery guy for coming in the front door. He actually yelled "get the f**ck out of here" to the delivery guy. I think their food is amazing, but they are obviously understaffed and stressed.

    One of our lunch "go to" places that never disappoints. Friendly staff. Falafel salad is made with fresh greens and is tasty. Tell them to go light on the dressing! Ray Nagen sandwich is excellent. Get it with the fried pickles or Hell, get the fried pickles with anything. Fried oysters are good. The sandwiches and salads are made with care and attention to flavor and freshness. It's not fancy, but a great casual spot.

    I haven't had a muffaletta sandwich since New Orleans. This sandwich was just okay. I was really excited about "The Pickles" but they were soggy and unappetizing. I had such High Hopes. Maybe it's because I've eaten real New orleans food and I expect more. So I guess that I'll wait and try it again at a later date.

    I think this used to be a D'Angelo's Sandwich Shop. Nothing's changed dramatically and being that Forest Avenue at this end of town is a veritable clusterf*ck approaching Morrill's Corner, I'd forgive you for passing by--don't!! If you do, you'll be missing a really solid eating experience, one that Portland, with all its high-end restaurants could use a few more of--good, well-produced food that's not all frilly, but offers a nod to our Southern food brethren, especially the New Orleans variety. Apparently the owner moved to New Orleans after Katrina and lived there for a couple of years. He was obviously paying attention. First point--he has gumbo. If you haven't had gumbo (and we're heading into gumbo-eatin' season) it's an awesome stew filled with Maine shrimp, chicken, and sausage. I think it's been dimmed a bit on the spice side from the real N'Orleans stuff, but you can always hit it with some Frank's and you'll be fine. They even toss in a terrific biscuit, too! I've had the pulled pork (on a previous visit) and last night I opted for the fried oyster po' boy. What's a po' boy? It's a traditional submarine sandwich from Louisiana. It almost always consists of meat or seafood, usually fried, served on baguette-like Louisiana French bread. I order the regular size, which is basically a half sandwich. I go with the Cajun fries, which are spicy and make your lips burn. Oh, and they have beer on tap, too! My pumpkinhead went well with what I was munching on. I sat out front in the picnic table area, seeing all the pissed off drivers locked in traffic, glad I had exited the mess. Enjoying my meal, reading the local free papers, I was planning my next run into Portland for some culture, or "culcha," as our good "friends" from the Hub might pronounce it. Boston has nothing on Portland with Po' Boys & Pickles on the scene. The menu has lots of other attractive offerings, too-- like the fried boudin balls (pork), fried pickles, a bunch of Cajun sauces, as well as the aforementioned Frank's (all I ever need to bump things up on the heat index). They have dessert items, which I never have room for. The toffee-covered bread pudding sounded enticing, but I passed. The next time you're headed west on Forest, or better, sitting in the 5:00 pm parking lot near Morrill's, bang a left, have a Po' Boy, a beer, and chill 'til things clear out a bit. Better, bike to work, maybe? Then you can have dessert, too, and not worry.

    A real Po Boy in Portland Maine? Absolutely!, and unlike the ones in New Orleans you don't have to push your way through drunken hoards to get one. My favorite is the fried oyster and shrimp Po Boy, it's loaded with delightfully fried seafood and served on a sliced bun substantial enough to handle it. Everything comes with a side of there super tangy pickles and the have a good selection of sodas chips and beer. Other favorites of mine are the classic muffuletta and the creole sausage and pepper sandwiches. The sausage Po Boy is particularly good due to the sausage not being in a casing which allows it to be better spread about the sandwich. It also eliminates the sometimes awkward squirting of other lesser sausage sub combos.

    Best fried oysters in Portland, no joke. Excellent fries. Not super cheap, but it's really delicious food, and I love places that do one thing and do it well. I'm not a huge sandwich person, but theirs are never dry or impossibly huge. Salads are great too, very fresh. Another one of the many North Deering jems!
