I stayed here with my sister for the one night we were in Portland and it was absolutely wonderful. We stayed in a room on the third floor that had a shared bathroom. The room was cute and cozy and fits two as long as you are okay with sharing the bed. There's a sink in the room and they provide bathrobes for the shared bathroom across the hall. After having stayed in many KOA's and hostels, I have no issue at all with the shared bathroom. It was clean and they provided toiletries. The staff were very nice and welcoming, providing directions for the immediate area. Parking was easy, and they did indicate they have an overflow lot for parking as well. In the morning, there was a nice continental breakfast spread with coffee, juices, yogurts, and various pastries, fruit, and cereal which was a nice added touch. We walked to the Old Port area from the hotel which was maybe about 20 minutes but a nice walk to see the town, definitely doable to walk to all the touristy places if the weather was nice. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend for an affordable, cozy experience.

The Inn at St. John has some very quaint old world charm. The rooms are old fashioned, but in a pleasant way. The beds could be a bit bigger, but are at least comfortable. You even get air conditioning which is nice for humid nights or drowning out the street noise. Unfortunately it is on a busy street so can be noisy. The bathrooms are also separate, so you have to go through the hall to yours, but you can get a private one, so it isn't that bad. The staff was superb and very helpful with suggestions and directions. They have snacks and even nicer, water bottles available in the lobby all day and night, and the water bottles were great for exploring the city on a hot day. Unfortunately, the downtown is a bit of a walk through an area that feels a bit underdeveloped, though not dangerous. You have to walk past a hospital and lots of houses to get there, but there are also nice restaurants and good coffee places on the walk. A breakfast is included which includes tea and coffee, muffins, english muffins, toast, jams, and cereal. Nothing too fancy, but enough to get you filled up enough to make it to your lunch of lobster. Best of all, they are very dog friendly so it is a perfect place for bringing fido on your trip.

My partner and I just got married (!) and we dawdled on finding a place to stay right after until the last minute. The Inn at St John ended up being the only place that had a room for the correct nights - but I'm glad we ended up here! The location seems a bit sketchy, but it's very convenient. It's incredibly close to 295, it's just a block away from Hadlock Field, and the walk to downtown is very doable. My husband and I left our car in the lot and walked all over the place and loved it! You can't even get lost, because it's right on Congress St and you just walk right down that road! The interior is very quirky and fun. No elevators, as they say on the website, but the stairs are a real maze and the architecture is really really neat. Our room is quite large and has a lovely bay window. The bathroom is in the hallway, but that was less of a problem than I thought it would be. There are always cookies and coffee set out in the lobby area and there's a continental breakfast in the morning. I dont eat gluten, so I stuck to the yogurt and fruit, but the muffins looked great and we walked a couple blocks up to the Holy Donut (also highly recommend) for gluten-free donuts. All in all this has been a very pleasant stay in a fun quirky and comfotable place with everything we needed.

Stayed here for a long weekend and was more than satisfied. Got a double bed with a private bath. Seemed like the most affordable place in town. - free breakfast (pastries, fruit, coffee, tea, yogurt) til 10am everyday, 11am on Sundays - sink in your room, and bathroom/shower in the hallway outside of your room, which wasn't a problem at all. - the hotel is a maze. It was fun figuring out how to get to the lobby. - atmosphere is cute and homey. - 20 minute walk to downtown/a few minutes drive. - they provide: bathrobes, shampoo, conditioner, soaps, shower caps, lotion, and makeup remover. - parking in back, but if full, you can park at Lang's or on the street. - staff was very friendly and helpful. - Asian grocery store, Rite-Aid, and pizza place within a block. - cookies in the lobby every afternoon!

This hotel has personality and that's why I absolutely adored it! My husband and I stayed at the Inn at St. John for 2 nights this past summer as we traveled through Maine. Portland was our first stop and this Inn was by far my favorite place of the whole trip. The staff is super friendly and always acknowledged my husband and I as we came and went. There was always cold water, hot chocolate, tea, coffee, and snacks available throughout the day. The breakfast was the standard bagels, muffins, yogurt, etc. but it was still great. The little room had cute tables to sit at and it was quite comfortable. Yes it's an old hotel, and yes there is no elevator. No big deal to us. We had a room where the bathroom was separate. I thought this would annoy me, but it didn't bother me at all, everything was just so charming! The room was a nice size and super comfortable. The bathroom was clean, the water was warm, and the towels were fluffy. There is a small parking lot behind the hotel, and one night all the spots were taken so we had to park on the street (where there are parking restrictions on some days), but it was no big deal. If you don't mind walking, you can easily walk to downtown Portland and just keep your car parked in their lot. I loved this hotel and when we go visit Portland again I will be sure to stay at the Inn at St. John.

This place still has it all. I called ahead on a valentine's day weekend to see if they would help me out with some flowers. Made a call to a local florist, had the flowers delivered to the hotel, the front desk folks stealthily put them in our room before we got there and lo, there they were when we walked in! They'll do their best to accommodate any request, and will reimburse you for cab rides from the bus or the train station! The rooms are funky, the place is a carpeted labyrinth of three levels, and there's cable TV. It's a little far from the Old Port, but there's the Union Publyk House (formerly Dogfish Cafe) next door, the Pizza dive across the street, and a couple of bodegas, so if you just want to hole up for the weekend, you sure can! We love this hotel and stay here every time we come to Portland.

My partner and I stayed here for a night a few weeks ago. We booked the trip to Portland last minute, so I was surprised to find that The Inn at St. John's had availability and reasonable rates. Location: Meh. I didn't love that it was at the base of (busy) Congress St, but it wasn't too bad. We had a top floor room so street noise wasn't an issue. Parking is really limited. Room: Clean and quiet. Decent bathroom. Staff: Helpful, pleasant. Overall, my experience was good. I'd definitely stay here again.

This is not a three star hotel and any one that tells you different must have stayed at a different hotel? Must be. The rooms (minus the non-HD flatscreen) haven't been renovated in what seems to be since the building was built in the early 1900s. The bathroom was small and kind of makeshift, I actually passed on taking a shower in the AM. The bed was like cardboard with springs; really just not comfortable but I will give it up, it was real clean. The hotel front desk had zero interest who came and went and wasn't the most warm of welcomes. It's not close to downtown; about 25 minute walk, which isn't bad, but the combo of location and just unpleasantness makes this a no win. More complaints? Internet connection is weak/non existent in the rooms. There isn't an elevator making you have to lug your luggage up flights of stairs which wasn't a problem, but they could have a staff member on site at least asking to help. Act like you care, just a little. Breakfast was your generic grocery store bagels. Portland is damn pricey in the summer for lodging, hence why we chose this spot, but I'd rather of paid the extra $100 and stayed at the Westin/anyotherchain hotel for a good night's sleep. I liken this more to a hostel.

This was perfect for a one night stay. In a convenient location, with parking and a continental breakfast. The bed comfort level was okay, not exceptional. The service was excellent everyone was very nice and helpful. I will definitely being going back!

Five Stars for a hotel without an elevator? Yes! And here's why.. We searched everywhere for a decently priced hotel in Downtown Portland for the night and couldn't come up with anything under $200, so when I stumbled upon the Inn at St. John for $140, I was initially skeptical. But, I like to explore when I'm in town for a night, so I don't spend much time in my room besides showering/sleeping anyway.. so I took the chance, and man, was I impressed! First off, the parking is free. They have an attached lot to the hotel. The staff was ridiculously friendly and informative. You could tell they were proud to be operating such a fine, old fashioned place. The hotel is very ornate and beautiful, with 100 year old Guest Registrations decorating the walls. You're also a short, 10 minute walk from all of the hustle of downtown. Tons of cool restaurants, bars & shops. Many have argued on past reviews that this wasn't a "hotel" or this wasn't a true "bed and breakfast." If you're looking for the traditional bed & breakfast experience, this isn't for you. However, if you're just a hotel jumper, you'll find a better selection of breakfast food here than most places offer. Plus late night snacks! Including all of the free bottle Poland Springs water you can drink! That was just awesome. We stayed in a King, on the top floor with a balcony. There are only 4 floors in the hotel. The room was large and very clean. The attached bathroom was a little small, but very clean as well. Yes, the stairs are kind of annoying, but for us they weren't a game changer. So take into account the large, clean room, the great staff, tons of free water and food, free parking.. all for under $140.. now, that's a Five Star joint to me. Exploring Portland? Take my word for it, and stay here. And eat the late-night peanut butter cookies.. they're delicious.

I've stayed at the Inn at St John twice with my fiance and it's been perfect both times. The hotel is so quaint and inviting it is so much nicer than a corporate hotel. It's a quick cab ride ($10 with tip) to downtown Portland and you can walk from the train station if you take the train up from Boston. We're going back this summer for our friend's wedding and I can't wait!

I gave three stars but I'm not even sure how to rate this place. It's odd. Smoke free yet at times I felt like someone was chain smoking very near by. Staff friendly, yet something was up I couldn't quite put a finger on. We called last minute, they had a room. We felt saved. First floor, private bath. Clean, older but not terrible. I noticed right away there is a lot of staff. I mean, a lot. They are bustling around. Talking freely to each other. Front desk gentlemen were nice, helpful. I kept noticing slight inconsitacies in the staff. In appearance, notable lack of uniform on some, yet they were bringing food to the lobby and obviously worked there. I hate to say some had missing teeth, not that it's a crime, but I found it odd. It wasn't until I heard this conversation between employees that it all clicked. "I'm not working today, I'll be in my room, don't worry about the linens. I have a friend coming over" I'm fairly certain these people are employing homeless in trade for lodging and food. I couldn't really tell who the person in charge was unless it was the one gentleman I saw with complete teeth and good hygiene. I think it's wonderful they are helping the community, and I don't think they are trying to hide it, but it's a little odd once it becomes transparent. Maybe I'm wrong.

Loved this hotel! The staff was great, very helpful and personable. The price was bad either, especially for the charm and uniqueness this hotel offers. The location was great, easy to walk to many things in downtown Portland. The ONLY reason I leave out one star is because the room I stayed in was quite small...no real room to walk around or put bags. But, it was decorated very nicely, heat/cooling was perfect. They even folded all the tissues/toilet paper/ towels to be decorative, and everything was very clean. Couldn't hear any noises outside the room. Breakfast was free and in a nice little area, plenty to choose from.

Spent one night. Clean and tidy, and the staff was great. They reimbursed most of my cab fare from the airport. Cute and quirky decor. The bed wasn't that comfortable, which is fine, but the pillows were like big airline pillows and the sheets seemed to be a polyester blend, so I was sweating all night. Improve your bedding and you'll be a fantastic place to stay, inn at at john!

This building has a lot of character-- it's a very cool place to stay if you appreciate history. The staff is incredibly friendly and our room was beautiful. Not the place for people who can't do stairs-- there are a lot of them and they are steep!

  • Steven I.

Everything was nice, except our room was extremely cold. They have a nice continental breakfast set up in the morning from 6-10am for the guests to have before going about their day. The rooms are very nice, very cute- the inn itself is a bit out of place given its immediate surroundings, however very nice. It is not too bad of a walk from Old Port, but there is a bus (1) that goes along Congress St.

For the money this is the place to stay. No it's not on the water, yes the neighborhood is in transition, but we felt very safe and as others note it is $100 cheaper than waterfront hotels. We did laundry at the laundromat across the street, an experience, and did eat at Sae Thai which was wonderful ! Our room was clean, quite and we did not hear anything in our first floor room right by breakfast bar. Would recommend if you don't mind the water or drive to port area.

Loved this place! Has parking in the back, is located close to the center (10 mins walking) and has a lot of the old toiletries that most hotel rooms skimp on nowadays. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the staff helpful and pleasant. They also have a little area with coffee and lemonade which is free of charge, and there is free wifi. Overall, if I return to the Portland area, I will definitely be staying at the Inn again.

I loved this hotel. It has great charm and attentive staff. It was odd to learn that some rooms share bathrooms. I did _not_ do that. I would certainly stay here again. It was also at a good rate.

Odd. That's what I'll say... odd. The location is not horrible, but it's odd. It's near the Old Port District, but it's also not. It's on a one way street, and backs up to a Thai place. If you park in the rear, which all the parking is in the rear, you have about ten steps to haul your luggage up. Yes, the desk clerk offers to help.. but it would be nice to have an independent option that doesn't have you circling the building. I laughed at the yelper who compared the interior to Disney's Haunted House - but they were spot on. We had selected a room on the first floor so hubby could get a break with hauling luggage up stairs, (you see how well that worked out), and we were right beside the front desk in one of their premier or luxury or whatever rooms. I will say it's quite large, and even though we were right next to the desk I never heard a thing. These rooms were obviously an add-on, and the brick wall between us and check in softened anything. Another oddity, our bathroom was two steps down. Not ideal for middle of the night potty breaks, but OK. Lots of large antique furniture in the room, sometimes being used for slightly alternative purposes. Interesting, but odd. The room was carpeted, and I initially feared fleas or something when we first checked in, but I don't think there were any problems after overnight. The bed was comfortable, and they really load up the bathroom with free amenities. Possibly the first time an inn has ever provided complimentary toothbrush and toothpaste automatically in the room. Their breakfast area is much too small and much too narrow.. or maybe there were just really full during our visit and everyone went for a bagel at 9 AM, I don't know. It was just awkward where you couldn't wait for your bagel to toast near the toaster because then noone else could walk by or access anything. Like I said, odd. The staff was very friendly, don't misunderstand, but I can't imagine that on a future visit we'd stay here again. Just... odd.

We have found our Portland home away from home. Everything you'll read here is true. It's not the Westin. But we liked it better. Go check out the pretty bar on the top of the Westin and come home to St John and enjoy not spending a huge room rate. It's true; the staff are lovely and welcoming, and our fellow travelers quite pleasant. Our wallpaper was a bit dated. We did not care. Our bed was great -- a great night's sleep. Our room was enormous, actually, and immaculate Nice towels, no luxury linens but they were just fine. And breakfast was great. Muffins and croissants, yogurt, coffee. All good. Walk to brunch at Local 188, and be happy. Just go!!

My fiancée and I came up to Portland on an impromptu trip. We found the Inn at St. John through Yelp and decided to stay here based on all of the great reviews. The hotel was very lovely and the staff was very friendly. Our room was very clean and tastefully decorated. We will definitely be staying here again when we visit Maine.

My wife and I stayed here for a weekend getaway. It's vintage and cozy, breaking the mold of your usual luxury hotel visit. They have a number of different options for your budget and are located conveniently just outside of the downtown Portland area. The staff were supremely friendly and helpful. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

This place has charm. It also has no elevator and my bathroom with down the hall and around the corner. And on the night we stayed there the heat in our room was broken so we had a space heater instead. I'm still giving it 4 stars. Why? Because for price, being an easy $100 cheaper than the other places I looked at in Portland, it was perfect! The room was clean, staff was very friendly, they provide a continental breakfast, and it was close to everything. This will definitely be my go to place next time I'm in Portland.

You just don't see hotels like this anymore! The Inn at St. John is Portland's oldest hotel and it has been kept in great shape. Don't expect a five star luxury experience, but do expect some great history, a well-kept building, and fair prices. The Inn is very reasonable, especially in the tourist season of Portland. No doubt, I would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I stayed here earlier this week. Charming building, and the accommodations are a hybrid cross between a bed and breakfast and a hotel. Rooms were cozy, front desk staff very personable, housekeepers did an excellent job, and the continental breakfast, while not fancy, was a most welcome way to start the day. It's a bit of a walk to the hub of the commercial/retail district, but we did it without too much trouble. (But beware the slippery brick sidewalks!) One thing: The radiator in the room we were in got very hot, but after we figured out the idiosyncrasies of the heating system, all was fine. We'll definitely stay there again on our next trip to Portland.

We stayed in several more expensive hotels in Maine recently and have to say that while this is one of the least pricey hotels, it is the best-run establishment overall. We stayed in a King sized mattress room with private bathroom on the second floor. The cleanliness was great, the staff professionalism was exceptional and the general state of the hotel was impeccable. We only stayed one night and almost wished that we could stay for another night before our trip back home. This hotel is lovely, more than reasonably priced and definitely worthwhile. Perhaps the only downside is the distance of the hotel from all of the Portland 'action' but the price seems to be worth the cab fare that gets you to town. Would absolutely stay here again!

Husband an I stayed in a full size room and had our own private (still separate) bathroom. The rooms were clean and it has a nice old world charm. Staff was very nice and polite. Free wifi and free parking is a major plus since that's unusual for hotel. The place is very old so lots of creaking and the walls are thin. Overall, you can probably fine a nicer hotel for the price but if you are looking for an experience, this is it. Location is about 1.5 miles from everything, nothing really around the hotel.

2.5 rounded up to 3. The Inn at St. John is on a quiet end of Congress St away from the Old Port area of Portland. The neighborhood is a little run-down but the inn itself is well kept up and with a certain historic charm. According to the website the inn was built in 1897 and has been in continuous use as an inn since that time. First impressions mean a lot to us and I was quite disappointed by the lack of warmth or even a proper greeting upon check-in. Miles was the name of the man at the desk and he wasn't the least bit friendly or welcoming. He essentially asked us if were were checking in (no hello, no welcome) and when we said we were he got down to business, handed us a key and that was the end of it. The inn is very much in keeping with its Victorian history. Everything down to the wallpaper and furniture feels like you've take a trip back in time. The doors and moldings all seem to be original and in a good way I felt like I was in someone's great-grandmother's house. Our room had a comfortable king size bed. The pillows were a bit too soft for my husband. I wished there had been an additional blanket on the bed as the evening was a cool one even though it is June. The en suite bathroom (some rooms have a bath in the hall which would not have been to our liking) was quite large. This was one area that although very clean felt too dated for me. There also were too few towels that were not of good quality and need to be replaced. There are a couple of rooms for guests on the first floor but as the web-site points out, the remainder of the hotel is accessible only by stairs and steep ones at that. The hallways are narrow and there is a bit of navigating to do even after you've climbed the main staircase. There is free parking in the back of the hotel but not as many spots as there are rooms. Overflow parking is in the lot next door at a Chinese restaurant with which the inn has an arrangement. We spent most of our time during the day and evening in the Old Port part of Portland which is either a long walk (you're about 2 miles away) or a very short drive from this inn so consider that if you are thinking of making a reservation here. Our stay was okay for just the one night that we booked, but ultimately this location and this place are not for us. If I hadn't been here with my husband, I would not have felt so great returning back here late at night especially after parking in the closed Chinese restaurant lot. There wasn't anything or anyone in particular that unnerved me when we returned that night. It was just the general run-down aspects of other buildings and houses around this inn. I've learned to trust my intuition about these things. Enough said. As well, I'd rather spend my money at a more welcoming hotel with staff that seem happy to see guests and who are eager to be of help. That's what the hotel/inn and B and B business is about. Miles, at the concierge desk needs to go back for some customer service training or find another line of work not involving customer service. Sorry to seem so harsh but that's how strongly I feel about these kind of first impressions. Staff can make or break a hotel experience. I will say, that the woman at the desk when we were checking out was quite lovely. I'm sorry I didn't get her name.

For the atmosphere, the decor, staff, and the level of professionalism. This inn is most definitely five stars. Everything about this inn screams old timey victorian gawdiness. All in good fun and it is clearly well celebrated here on yelp. A slight complaint on the hotel itself is that the bathroom definitely needs some renovation (I had a private bathroom, not communal. My main problem is, I stayed here, by myself, and I believe in the paranormal. I sent a picture of my room to my girlfriend, and her reply was "you're not going to want to hear this. But it looks kind of haunted." And that was the seed to make me paranoid and uneasy. My room was 103, which is situated right by the rear door exit. So I'd hear a lot of people going in and out prior to the 9pm lock up. That and even after the lock up, I'd still hear traffic from the street outside. When the time came for bed, I had nothing but paranoia swirling through my mind that my room was haunted, completely based on the antique decor and that seed left by my girlfriend's text. It was not until possibly 4am that I finally passed out. Would I stay here again? Definitely, but I think I'll need someone else with me to calm that paranoia.

I stayed originally because all the hotels in the old port were booked up however I really feel like I stumbled upon something here and from now on I will be booking with them when I want to stay in Portland. Where to start. Ok so the location is not quite old port but its a short drive and of course a cab is only a few bucks. The front desk will set you up with a cab. The staff at the desk was very knowledgable about the local area. The atmosphere of the inn is quaint and comfortable. I had a room with a shared bathroom but that was not a problem because I never saw any of the other guests I was sharing with. For what I paid for one night it would have cost me double to stay at the Regency and honestly my room was just as nice. The beds were comfy and the bedding was soft and clean There is a sink in the room which was nice. Everything in the lobby is complimentary, coffee, juice, light snacks etc. It is listed as a bed and breakfast which is not really correct because I do not consider a continental breakfast, breakfast but it still was nice. So if you are looking for something reasonable and definitely nice, than this is it!

So don't expect a luxury hotel when you come here. However, do expect a very nice, quiet, "B&B-ish" experience. Inn at St. John's is conveniently located a few miles from the Old Port. Do not expect to walk to the Old Port though. The prices can't be beat for the location though. Although I didn't do much sleeping the night I stayed at the Inn (was out late with college buddies), the mattress is not super comfy like most hotels. It's obviously quite dated. That's probably the only thing holding me back from 5 stars. The service was great, it was very clean, and they have an LCD TV in every room. It's a great place to stay for a night or three.

This hotel was a great find. The staff was wonderful, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable (king size) and the private bathroom was an adequate size. However, our room was on the 1st floor room and faced the street-that was a problem because of the heavy traffic. We were not familiar with the area and when we arrived noticed that the inn is across the street from the bus station, a health care center and close to the train. It had snowed the day we were there so there was constant noise from the plows. We would consider staying here again but would request a room that did not face the street. Also didn't realize it is about a 2-3 mile car ride to Old Port .I'm not sure I would be comfortable walking back and forth especially at night.

Super friendly staff, great amenities, and we got a really nice room for dirt cheap last minute, no hassles at all. It's also really close to all the bars and things, but most importantly they give you free cookies.

Yes, it is a little odd and the decor is very "Disney's Haunted Castle" but it's great and not at all spooky. This is our second time here and we always love it. The room is immaculate. We called last minute and they put us into a great room with an air mattress for the kid and a private bathroom down the hall. It's not in a dangerous part of down but definitely not a fancy part of town. Parking is a little weird. Parking behind the Chinese restaurant was the easiest. It's cheap and nice. What more could you ask for? I would highly recommend it.

Seriously, why would you stay anywhere else? Immaculately clean, historic, quirky, best value for your money, many extras included, next to three great restaurants and the best front desk staff ever. Stop browsing and just make your reservation now.

Seriously, can this be considered a B&B? The answer is no. It is a hotel apparently with some history that lends itself to advertise as the longest continuously run inn in Portland. However, even with the historical pedigree, this hotel is at best on par or below a Country Inn and Suites....except that the interior decor eerily reminds me of Disney's Haunted House. The positives are that the rooms are clean and the service staff are friendly. Rooms are cheap, less than $100, if you can live with sharing a bathroom. (We opted to pay a premium for a private in room bath, and paid $159/ night) Reservations staff on the phone was friendly enough. Also if you plan on going to see the AAA Seadogs play, the stadium is only a block away. On the down side, if you think you are getting a real breakfast at this B&B, you would be wrong.Continental breakfast is what is served here and this simply does not satisfy the second "B" in B&B. The inn is located across from a bus terminal; along a pretty noisy street; and near a rail road crossing---not exactly a relaxing B&B atmosphere. At night, well, let's just say my wife and I did not linger too long in the parking lot or the overflow parking lot located at a neighboring fast food restaurant. As for the room, the bed was not comfortable and the room always had a damp feeling associated with it. Overall, I could not recommend staying at this place if you are expecting a B&B experience.

Not exactly what you think of when you hear "bed and breakfast". This place was more a sad hotel. Our room had a sink in it, but the bathroom was shared between us and another room. The bed was a full sized mattress which does not provide a lot of room for two. Location could be closer to the attractions of Portland but not too bad. Maybe 1.5 miles from the tourist areas. Would not stay here again.

I'm so glad we found this place in January when visiting. It was cheaper since on the off season which was great for us. A beautiful old hotel with great wallpaper and rooms. It's true they don't have an elevator and the stairs can be dangerous if you don't watch out. It's very close to all the neighborhoods, we had no problem navigating our way to and from the inn. I will probably stay here every time I visit. Staff were friendly and helpful as well.

My overnight stay at the Inn at St. John helped salvage a trip in July that started off on the wrong foot. I had trouble finding reservations and stayed at a two-star hotel my first night there, which was depressing. I noticed that the Inn at St. John had an opening the following night, so I grabbed it. From the minute I walked in the door, I knew I was in for a better experience. The employees were SO friendly. When I mentioned that I was relocating to the area, they were both eager to provide tips about the area. I was blown away by the level of service. Then I went to my room and was very happy with the room and amenities. It completely changed the vibe of my trip. I returned to Portland in September when my first lease fell through, and just went ahead and booked at the Inn at St. John again. I had another great experience. I like that most rooms have a mini refrigerator, and that you can get more channels on TV here than some other hotels. If you're looking for five-star, flawless luxury, this might not be for you. But if you like quirky places with much more personality than a traditional hotel, this could be right up your alley like it was for me. Although I personally have five-star feelings about it, I'll give it four stars since the Internet can be slow-to-non-existent at times, and some of the bathrooms could use a little updating. Overall though, it's been my favorite place to stay in Portland. Now that I've finally relocated here, this will be my go-to place for my guests--especially since they allow pets.

We really enjoyed this hotel. It was about $100 cheaper than other highly rated options in Portland, making it a very good deal. The deal is that you have to walk into town a bit from this location -- it's about a mile up the hill to the popular destinations. But a mile walk is healthy, and well worth the 100 bucks in savings. Our bed was comfortable and clean and the bathroom was very well stocked -- tons of towels and other products -- including slippers! and robes for chillin' in the room. We didn't get to check out the breakfast because we were late getting out in the morning and the coffee was empty at the exact moment we got to it, but I think that if we had had a couple of minutes, someone would have refilled it, and there was a single-cup brew system in the room. Park behind the hotel (take a left just past the front entrance), grab a free cookie in the lobby when you check-in, walk to the bodega next door for some Allagash to stock your in-room fridge, and walk into town for dinner (I do not recommend the Thai place on this street).

Remodeled from the old Westfield Inn in Portland's Libbytown neighborhood, the Westfield Inn has been offering secure, attractive, and comfortable lodgings for over 20 years. The decor is swank for a modestly priced caravansary, and the staff expert and helpful. When my aunt from Floridavisits me, she always stays at the Inn at St. John.

We stayed here after hiking and loved it. Our room was clean and nice. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. We also had two pups with us who were welcomed with cookies and pats! It is about a 20 minute walk to get to places of interests in Portland but is right near the Portland sea dogs field. We didn't mind the walk in and liked that it was easy to get to from the highway. Overall one of the best places we stayed with dogs and we really enjoyed it!

Amazing what kind of deal you can get on a place without a devoted bathroom. This is just something to throw out up front. Otherwise given the rate of $90 during the busy New England tourist season, I thought this place was a deal. The room was beautiful and spacious. The bed easily could have fit another person or me with a couple hundred more pounds on my body. There was even space for a table and there is free internet in case you need to take care of business before hitting the town. While not having a bathroom, the in-room sink complete with towels and toiletries is a really nice touch. While it was an older TV, it did have cable. The A/C unit was also a nice touch as were the provided robes for the common shower. If that laundry list of bonuses wasn't enough to make you forget about the bathroom, it's very close to a gas station and a few places to eat. It's probably a 20-30 minute walk from the bars and the downtown waterfront area but if it's nice out this definitely isn't an issue. Yeah it is kind of bummer knowing there won't a toilet to hug if you do it up big or your own bathroom if you decide on a marathon shower but with the comfort involved I could easily care less. The morning provisions while modest are better than most places and the free bottled water is awesome too. Man, I was almost sad to leave...

Loved it. Really cool old hotel with small hallways and old decor. Staff was always very friendly (even when our dogs were barking a little too much) but they were never rude or snobby about it. My one gripe is that they don't tell you you can't leave the dogs in the room when you go out for the day. Should be stated in the pet policy.

In terms of value for money, this place is 5 stars! That's 5 stars compared to what I expected and compared to other places like it. Not compared to large corporate hotels, which have more comfortable beds, elevators, and much higher prices. I stayed for business and will again. Well under a hundred bucks for a night in high season when all others were well over $200. Quirky, sweet, and interesting. Great staff, interesting other guests, and a great feel. I'm an experienced traveler and I didn't mind some of the things that others might. Walls are thin, so I used the white noise app on my phone. Shared bath, but it was clean as a whistle. No elevator, so I got a little exercise--top floor and steep stairs. I loved this place.

While visiting Portland, I stayed here at the Inn at St John. First impression, is that it was cozy enough but it's location was less than ideal for my situation. The hotel is located at the far end of Congress St, pretty much away from everything someone visiting Portland would want to see and visit. I had a room with a semi-private bath. Positives: The room was small but quite nice actually. It was accommodated with a refrigerator and a microwave, which I was worried they might not have. Free WIFI was also available, which was also a pleasant surprise. I used housekeeping one time to ask for two extra pillows and more bath wash and had a knock on my door within minutes! Negatives: The semi-private bath was the worst part of my experience, specifically the shower. As a 6'0" man, the shower was extremely small and the shower head only came to my chin. Besides having to crouch in the shower the whole time, the water stream from the shower head was incredibly weak. Essentially, they were water fountain pressured streams. The icing on the top of the cake was not being able to get warm water, my options were either scalding hot or freezing cold. Parking is a bit limited so if you drive at night time, be prepared to have to park at the Chinese restaurant behind the hotel's parking. This wasn't a big deal. And again, the location of the hotel. Overall, If in Portland again, I would stay at the Inn at St John again. Not because I'd want to but because it is the only hotel that is actually in Portland within it's price range.

for under $100 a night, i was not expecting a palace but i decided to book this hotel as the reviews were positive for the most part. the negative reviews are from people who believe in flying pigs and the spagetti monster. i like that this hotel is very near the amtrak station. maybe a $5 cab ride. even though the location is almost at the end of congress, its not such a bad walk. if youre not used to walking then yeah. pay up bitch, stay at old port. if you dont mind walking 1 1/2 miles then youre cool. you will pass their art district and other interesting places. my mission in portland was to explore so i did not spend that much time at the hotel. but the moment i checked in i felt very comfortable. the guy behind the counter was super friendly and very welcoming. he explained everything i needed to know about my stay, breakfast, parking situation and all. the room was cute. big enough for what i needed. everything was very organized and clean. the shared bathroom was also very clean. i would recommend this place for sure. but be aware that theres no elevator so if you have a ton of luggage either leave that in your car or else. checking out was easy and got to catch breakfast. i was hungover so it was just peppermint tea and a bottle of water for me.

The atmosphere was nice. The building was neat. The staff was friendly. My room was clean, but small. My only complaint is that I didn't have my own private bath, but I did know what I was getting myself into. I was on the third floor and it was quiet and peaceful. It's not far from cool bars and delicious restaurants either. I would stay again at this hotel when I come back to Portland!

This Inn sits just on the edge of town, walkable to city center but it is a bit if a hike and on a hot summer day might be just too far. However, we found the ASAP taxi service quick to respond and easy option instead of walking. I gave the Inn 2 stars because our experience was soured by one particular grey-haired woman who works the front desk. She's direct, rude, bossy and doesn't listen to customers or other staff members. When we checked in, we gave our name, she couldn't find the room--the gentleman at the front desk told her which room we were assigned to. She ignored him, takes us to a completely different room, lets us in, then realized it, calls us out of there, back to the front desk, has to reprocess the credit card transaction (lord knows how many charges there will be), and finally to our room. On Sunday, we ran the Shipyard Half Marathon in exceedingly hot weather and my friend collapsed at the finish, suffered a heat stroke and was admitted to the medical tent. He was there for 2.5 hours. I realized we would miss the 12 noon checkout, called the Inn to explain the situation and requested a late checked. The grey-haired woman flatly refused citing they needed to turn the room around for the next customer. Zero flexibility. I re-stated the situation hoping for some compassion. Nope. Her reply "we can pack up your stuff and move it to the front desk". I then indicated that we just finished a race, need to still shower and offered to pay for another night's room if it made a difference. Nope. She could move us to a room across the hall, however. Fine. When we finally for back to the Inn it was only 12:30 (one half hour past original check-out). I inquired at the front desk about where we were to be moved to. I explained the situation to the man at the front desk, and one of the house-keeping staff came out of the back room. She said she already moved our stuff but hadn't made up the original room yet. The man suggested we just go back to that room (no kidding). The house-keeper came back upstairs with us, helped us to collect out stuff (she was the sweetest of all employees there) and offered the use of a common bathroom as well to clean-up (there were 4 of us) since we had a train to catch back to Boston. We shower, pack up, come back downstairs and decide to wait in the lobby until it was time to go to our train. Funny thing, as we were waiting, I over-heard the grey-haired lady explaining to new walk-in guests about the room options available (one of them was the one we just vacated). It wasn't even booked! We won't be back!

This is where I have stayed during my yearly visits to Maine. Location - Excellent! It is close by the bus station, Concord Trailways and the Airport. Not to mention it is right in downtown. Rooms - Have a Victorian charm to them. Historic building, the history of the building is there to read in every room. Pet friendly rooms available. Rates - Can't beat their price in this area. My visits have always been off peak but have got upgraded to their best rooms without asking whenever there was availability. Staff - Not overly friendly but helpful with any questions you might have. have never seen the same staff more than once so this is a variable factor Breakfast - more of muffins and "pick-me-up-for-the-roads" than sit down breakfast items. Was never really there for the breakfast anyways.

The customer service I received here was horrendous. After booking my room online, I received a confirmation email from their server that stated my rate and room requests. I had booked my room several months before my trip because I was traveling on a weekend night during the busy summer months. When I arrived, I was told that my reservation was not valid, that there was "no way" they could give me a room at the rate I had booked (I think it was $79 for a queen bed). I produced the email confirmation, and they said that it hadn't come from their website and that it was a phoney document. The return email address was reservations@innatstjohn… and I had booked directly through their website! Eventually, they called down the manager, a crotchety old woman who confirmed that there was "no way we would ever, EVER allow a queen room to be reserved for $79." Her solution was that I could pay full-price for the last remaining room in the hotel, which was upwards of $250/night! Eventually, after I refused to pay the full-price rate and demanded that my reservation be upheld-- and stood in the lobby for well over an hour, they gave me their last room for $79. The room itself was nice enough and clean, but the fight to get there wasn't worth it at all.

These guys are awesome. The dudes working the front desk are super friendly and are willing to point you out to the action in Portland. They're real hospitable, and the place is totally clean. The breakfast is decent, but it's mostly breads, cereals, and the weird fountain juice that one would find at gas stations. Recommended if you're in town for First Friday. It's a bit of a walk into the main part of Congress St., but it's totally worth it.

I stayed here recently for a weekend getaway with my boyfriend and was very impressed!!! For the price, it was a great find! Our room was very nice. We splurged and did one of the luxury rooms, and it was very nicely decorated and very clean. It had some cool exposed brick in the room, and (my favorite part) really cool colored towels in the bathroom (not just your regular white). I don't know, it made an impression with me! The staff were pleasant, but not terribly stand out by any means. The front desk people were very helpful when you had a question, but otherwise everyone seemed to be standing outside smoking all day. Our room was near the rear entrance so this made me nervous at first, but there was no smoke smell in the room! Also, don't go with any great expectations about breakfast. It was just bagels/muffins/cereal/etc, but hey, saved you the money of eating out! Overall it was a very pleasant experience! And it is right next to the Dogfish Cafe, a definite plus!

This place is weird and neat and cozy and unique. It was well priced and pretty close to the main street areas. Our room was one with a private, but not in-suite bathroom. No big deal. But I'll say this; if you are a large person, or claustrophobic, you might not enjoy their shower, which was so tiny I had to/and could put my leg across the sink to shave (while still in the shower). It's little. You've been warned. We got there late and their parking lot was full. If this happens to you, have no fear! There is a parking lot at the Chinese restaurant adjacent where you can park. Just make sure to copy your license plate down so you don't get towed! We woke up late and they let us check out an hour later for free (very nice). They have free breakfast, but as you might've guessed from the previous sentence, we missed it. :)

We stayed in a room with a private bath which was nice but it was facing the street so it was a bit noisy. A simple continental breakfast was nice to have. The bed was stiff and a bit uncomfortable. The surrounding area isnt the nicest part of portland but close enough to the downtown area. The staff was very friendly. Overall a decent option for a short stay.

The Inn at St. John is fine - not terribly close but not terribly far to the main action (a short car ride or a long walk). It can't quite decide if it's a hotel or a B&B. The staff, especially the housekeepers, were exceptionally nice. I'd imagine there are better places to stay, though I'm sure there are worse.

Very nice stay. The inn is reminiscent of british inns i stayed downtown london. It is very clean and the staff is very polite. Most room come with private bathroom so you are not keen about sharing or walking the hall in your pj you need to pay attention to the description of the room. No elevator, but then again you are not climbing the empire state building; it is only a couple of flights of stair and they do have rooms at ground level. It is also very conveniently located in the art district of portland and within walking distance of the old port (15 minutes brisk walk or 30 minutes stroll). Breakfast is your basic continental. Plenty of parking in the back; and although the surrounding buildings are a bit run-down, the area is safe!!!! The ratio price to quality and location is very well balanced.

This was my first experience at a Bed and Breakfast and it was absolutely adorable! This B&B is quaint and cozy and a short walking distance to downtown Portland and the pier. The beds were comfortable and they offer a complimentary breakfast of simple foods such as bagels, coffee, and orange juice. We had a room with a private bathroom and that was just perfect for two girls.

This Inn is great and pretty much half the price of other hotels in the Old Port. We did have our own bathroom so I can't speak for the shared rooms but the suite was large, comfortable and clean. I am so glad I gave it a try, I will recommend to others and would stay here again!

My girlfriend and I stayed here a lot when she was living in NH and I was up in midcoast. I had my dad stay here when he came to visit recently and he had a great experience as well

I loved this place! Although I found the mismatched flowery wallpaper to be somewhat hallucinatory, I loved everything else about this hotel. The rooms and public areas were spotless. We had a top floor room which did not have its own bathroom en suite, however, we had our own private bathroom on the floor to which we alone had keys. And so that we wouldn't have to venture into the hall in our pj's, fluffy, thick, white bathrobes were provided! The bed was huge and comfy, the room was spacious, with a large fridge, AC, tv, and every other creature comfort imaginable. The staff was super friendly, and there is free coffee around the clock. We skipped the continental breakfast because there are so many great diners in Portland; we didn't want to ruin our appetites! I will definitely stay here again.

I stayed here on a Wednesday in the middle of July. I checked into my room at about 2:30 and found it to be very clean. I opted to pay an extra ten bucks to have my own private bathroom which was right across the hall. Having to actually leave my room to use the bathroom was the only drawback, but this is par for the course when staying in many "inns". The location is decent, but you're still over 1.5 miles away from Old Port.

My friend and I stayed here during our trip to Portland. The room prices are extremely affordable. We payed $60/night for our room but we did visit during peak season. I'm sure it'd be ridiculously cheap off season. We had a room with a cute private bathroom that you open with your room key. The rooms are very clean as is the bathroom. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Their breakfast is a continental breakfast that included bagels, cereal, yogurt, juice, tea and coffee. Nothing too fancy but it gets the job done. They also have juice and cookies out for the whole day until 11 PM, which was extremely exciting. The only real downside is that it's a bit of a walk to downtown Portland (~15-20 minutes) but it's not horrible. But that's barely a downside to me so I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Portland.

Really LOVELY place - very helpful staff. Gorgeous rooms and decor. Very nice breakfast. Only complaint would be the small parking lot, but it's not a big deal since they open a nearby lot if they run out of space. It's not super close to downtown and I wouldn't recommend walking through the more ahem...suburban parts of town to get there, but finding parking in downtown Portland is pretty easy. If you're going for one or two nights, I highly recommend this. Very cute place!

Once I got over the rather maddening fact that seemingly every lodging option in Portland is an antediluvian, victorian-style affair, I came to appreciate the Inn at St. John, for its reasonable prices, good (though not great) location, and clean, pleasant presentation. Our room was no-frills but perfectly nice, although having to go down the hall to get to our private bathroom proved to be a minor annoyance (spring for the in-room bathroom, if you don't feel like listening for footsteps outside your door to determine whether you can run down to the bathroom in your underwear). The building itself has its own charm, in a pre-Americans with Disabilities Act kind of way, with steep staircases and a labyrinth of corridors. All in all, a pleasant, affordable and practical choice for visiting Portland. I recommend.

This was a last minute trip. I think if I had the time to look into it more, we probably wouldn't stay here. It was a nice stay but for the price and the room, it was a bit over priced. Keep in mind that it wasn't the inn's fault for my careless research. I had googled "bed and breakfast" and this inn came up. And, looking at their website, I thought we were going to get a real bed and breakfast (you know, the hot breakfast that should accompany a "bed and breakfast") but if you look closer and click on the tab for "rooms and amenities", you'll learn that it's a continental breakfast. Also, the definitions of the room types aren't are clearly defined as it should be. The labels "luxury", "traditional" and "value" accommodations don't tell you much. When you go to book a room be sure to read the description carefully and call to ask them what each room has. *Note: One king-sized room has no windows.

We would maybe stay here again if we come back to Portland... you get what you pay for! Pros: cheap, OK location (chose not to walk because it was too cold), limited parking, good service, fridge/freezer/microwave in the room Cons: bed was uncomfortable, radiator and window unit were loud, the window heating unit made the room really stuffy and uncomfortable, bathroom was tiny, water was very unpredictable in shower, spotty and slow internet, too few (and too loose) electrical sockets Neutral: breakfast was underwhelming, blankets were not super warm or comfy, TV was small

For many years I have stayed at The Inn At Saint John and its always been a great stay, Friendly staff and great rooms. Over the years I must have stayed in each of them! Very reasonable priced and comfortable.

This is more of a Bed and Breakfast but certainly priced like a motel. We got a great room for an incredibly low price. What do you get with this hotel? Plenty. Great service and very helpful staff. A clean room (although not modern since the building is older and probably hasn't been updated in a while). We also got a fridge and sink in our room. Free wifi, continental breakfast and a good, convenient location. We had a separate private bathroom but you may get a semi-shared or shared bathroom. It's clean and modern but if you're not used to it and don't want it, this may not be the place for you. Aside from that, everything is great and easily worth the low $ ($50).

I would give it another chance . . . My experience here last weekend was more 3.5 stars but I cannot bring myself to give a 4-star review because: - They gave us the wrong room initially: we had booked and were charged for a queen bed with a private hall bath but we were put in an ugly, smelly dark double with no bath but a small sink in the room (they didn't even notice when signed in and our room card displayed the incorrect surname) - Correct room was not ready until 1.30 pm even though check-in was at 1pm and we were actually there early; this made us royally late for a tour we were planning on as we only had 36 hours in Portland - The maid, who had a key, walked in on us. Yes, as we were about to do "that". She apologised, and was embarrassed, and she just wanted to make sure the room was locked (she hadn't realised we were in yet) - but still . . . Oh, and we didn't get to "that". Kinda killed the mood, you know? - Shower took about 10 minutes to heat up and by that time, there was a pool of standing water in the unplugged tub - There was no discount or any mention of reimbursement for the troubles; it is a standard in this industry - no matter if you are a B&B, an Inn or the Four Seasons - to make a small gesture of professional courtesy by way of reimbursement/compensation for an unhappy guest However, I am not giving up entirely and would give it one second chance because: - We were early and our room wasn't ready but the front desk contacted the maid, who dropped everything to prepare our room ASAP (too bad it turned out to be the wrong room, but A for effort!) - The rates, even in the middle of peak season, were good - The breakfast was fine - nice if not home-made selections, including healthier options like yogurt in the fridge and fruit - The #1/#5 Metro bus into the city is only 1 of 2 lines that runs on Sundays and it is right outside - Front desk let us leave our bags for almost the entire day after we checked out, so we could walk around Old Port for 6 hours - One of the maids/breakfast attendants saw our map and was really helpful about where to go, what to see and how to get there - he was a local and his enthusiasm was great - also, it was nice to see that the inn hires locally and with no prejudices One more shot if we are ever back in Portland; a not-bad experience this time around.

I don't think I've been to a better hotel. I don't think a better hotel exists on the planet. Always a clean (if not always large) room. Always a nice little continental breakfast (which fills me up with enough energy to stroll down the street to the Dogfish on Sundays for brunch). Always a free local paper (I like the Press-Herald/Sunday Telegram). Always iced tea and lemonade and coffee and hot water for hot tea. Always helpful (if seemingly curt at first) staff. Always a comfortable bed. Always convenient (within a twenty minute walk of Old Port, and the neighborhood is far less sketchy than it looks). Always a great, relaxing stay. And always reasonable (though it still gets pricey during the season, hence the two dollar signs instead of one in my rating off the price range). It's tough to do much better unless you're living in Portland and keep a friendly house. And most of you aren't and don't.

My boyfriend and I stayed here while we were visiting Portland for a concert. The Inn was the perfect location for a nice walk to the State, but also close to some amazing restaurants and not too far of a drive (maybe 5 mins) from Old Port. The first night we were there was amazing. The staff was very helpful, and the Inn itself was historic and quaint, perfect for a couple. We checked out a little late, and they didn't penalize us at all, and were very accommodating. We decided to stay another night in Portland and started calling around to hotels, and decided to see if the Inn possibly had an opening. The staff not only remembered us but said that a room similar to ours was available but that if we wanted, they would upgrade us to a King size suite with a private in room bath for only 5 dollars more! The room was just as clean and comfortable as the other, plus had a much better view. When we return to Portland, we will, without a doubt, stay there again.

I stayed here for a few days in early May, on my first vacation in Portland. It's a bit removed from the city center, but was actually close to a number of other attractions (such as Portland's Western Promenade, and some great restaurants), and besides, Portland is pretty walkable generally. it's cozy, and very very clean. Bed was super comfortable, and while the breakfast wasn't anything to write home about, it served in a pinch. I have paid higher rates for fewer amenities elsewhere, so I found this a very good value. Overall, I felt very comfortable here, and intend to make it home base for future Portland vacations.

Great place, nice breakfast nook, clean, nice staff. One thing. We figured out- after a few cars honked at us, looked, and rounded the corner- that the Inn, or at least the area has a prostitute reputation. It wasn't a BAD neighborhood, just don't walk home alone at night. I felt safe enough, it's about a mile and a half or two miles from the water and we walked everywhere. I wouldn't let this discourage you, but just a warning.

This was exactly the place for us! My boyfriend was headed to Portland for business and I went along. The Inn at St. John was just what we were looking for. The rates are super low but it still has the feel of a pricier bed and breakfast. We stayed in a room with a king sized bed and the bathroom inside for around $50 a night. Definitely check their website for special deals. When my boyfriend went back by himself he stayed in a smaller room with a double bed and private hall bath for under $40. They have something for everyone. The room was surprisingly large and had a refrigerator and a freezer as well as a TV. The heating unit in our room wasn't working properly but they had an electric heater that did the trick. The room wasn't exceptionally fancy by any means...but neither was our budget. So, it worked for us. Getting around Portland from the hotel was really easy. The people at the front desk called cabs for us and gave us $5 cab vouchers which made the rides downtown practically free. If you take a cab there from the Amtrak station they will reimburse you. The hotel is about a 25 minute walk to the shopping/downtown/arts district. There are some sketchy parts along the way but nothing that would have made me think twice about walking. There is also a bus that runs right in front of the hotel and they have a private parking lot around back. The staff was very helpful and friendly and made some great suggestions about where to eat and where to visit. All in all, we've decided to make the Inn at St. John our go to spot when we visit Portland.

I found this place from a bed and breakfast website thinking that is a B&B and we will have a great breakfast. I guess it was my fault trusting the B&B website because we ended up with a continental breakfast that was disappointing. I liked the interior design of the room. It was homey and cozy. Very close to downtown and they provided parking that was great. The receptionist was polite but not too friendly. They knew ahead of time that we will be three people in the room but no arrangement was made, which was also disappointing. All together was not too bad for one night.

My husband and I just got back from a 3 night stay at the Inn. We loved it! Cozy rooms, great customer service, and wonderful location! A short walk from everywhere we wanted to go. Definitely recommend to couples ( better w/o children) for an easy get away!

Solid 4 stars! As a nice, dog friendly in, its hard to beat. It has a very old fashioned feel to it - not just from the decor, but the actual architecture. As someone mentions, the staircases are a tad windy! Tough when you are navigating with a dog crate. Service was great, amazingly someone is available at the desk 24 hours a day (at an Inn? unheard of). Rooms were very well appointed, certainly for the price. Beds were very comfortable, and everything appeared to be nice and clean. The housekeepers were really nice people as well - very into meeting all the dogs. My only real issue, and its not their fault, is parking. If you arrive too late, you have to park behind the chinese restaurant next door. The area looks (but probably isn't) a bit shady, so I was not happy to park outside of the private lot. No issues though.

This is our favorite place to stay in Portland. Crazy amounts of character, M.C. Escher-esque staircases all over the place, chandeliers in every room etc. It's all the way on the west end of town which I love, as you don't have to worry about missing anything behind you (there's nothing but a Greyhound station) - just head east. We've shown up early a few times and have had no problem with early check-ins. The one time our room wasn't ready they let us leave our stuff at the front desk while we wandered around the city. They have a variety of room types and sizes - we've stayed in a two double bed room with a private bath and a variety of rooms with the shared bath in the hallway and all were very nice and comfortable. The staff are super friendly. Last time we were there my husband got into a conversation about baseball with the woman at the front desk while we were checking out. He mentioned that we had planned to go to a Sea Dogs game but never got around to it. She called the park, asked if we could get box seats, and gave us a parking pass to stay in their lot even though we had already checked out. The rooms are very reasonably priced for what you get. I can't wait to go back.

i will most def stay here again if i'm ever back to the area. The hotel is beautiful and the staff is very accomodating. The hotel is within walking distance to the downtown area of portland.. maybe a mile? The only complaint i have is the shower in the semi provate bathroom. I dont' mind sharing a bathroom... i've stayed in hostels before... but it was reallllly tiny and kinda gross not really unclean just eehhhh.

My expectations of what this hotel wd be like for the price were far exceeded. Staff was friendly and helpful; room was lovely and clean and comfortable; location was great - unless you're on the front of the hotel, then it's on a busy street, and I'd recommend AC to drown out traffic. We didn't go for the continental breakfast, but it was food that hadn't been cooked - not a problem. They provided fresh fruit, yogurt, free water. Just can't say enough about how pleased we were. And with the money we saved on the hotel, we were able to splurge a little on our restaurant choices. Wd recommend highly and can't wait to go back.

This was the second stay at this hotel in a month. Everything was as nice as the first time I stayed. There was a snow storm in Portland so I ended up staying in town rather than driving the hour home. I stayed in a Queen room with private bath. The room was spacious and clean with a certain quaintness to it. There was a flat panel TV, a sink and refrigerator in the room, The front desk staff was very pleasant and accommodating, explaining about the continental breakfast served in the small area off the lobby. The bathroom which I had a key to was exclusively mine and just one door away from my room in the hallway. This was a slight inconvenience, but not a problem at all. There were also robes, an iron & ironing board and a coffee maker in the room. For the low rate I paid for the night, I think I got the best bargain in Portland. The rooms are warm & comfortable, and they really make you feel at home here.

I stayed at the Inn at St John because of the fantastic reviews on Yelp, which I found to be a little too generous. I though the place itself was fantastic - historic, unique, quaint - and just what I wanted in a B&B. The staff was very friendly; the gratis breakfast was more than sufficient but the location... not so good. This was my first time in Portland and when I was driving through the neighborhood that the Inn is located, I considered re-booking another room but decided against it, as soon as I was inside the property. It's definitely not the greatest part of town, in fact, it may be the worst part of town but I can't be sure. I didn't feel as though I was in immediate danger but I certainly dismissed the idea of walking downtown, for fear of having to walk back at night. I also made sure to lock up my car. When we pulled up to park in the back, three employees were outside smoking. Hey, that's fine, no worries. When we left an hour later to drive downtown, you guessed, the same three people were outside smoking again (or maybe still). I was also disappointed to find that the "happening" Old Port area was a 1.7 mile walk from the hotel and the only available transportation was a bus, that stopped service around 8:30p, or taxi. However, that is something I should've looked into beforehand, so I can't complain too much. All in all, the rooms were good, although very small. Our room had a closet that was about 6" deep. It was so shallow, the hangers had to be hung at a very sharp angle. But hey, it's an old building and the rooms were very clean and cozy overall, so that was fine. This isn't the worst or the best place in Portland but if I were to go again, I would definitely find something closer to Old Port.

I love this place for so many reasons. Stayed here for a one night stop in Portland with my bf and another couple. Staff was extremely pleasant and accomodating. Rooms were clean and the price cannot be beat. The inn itself charming with its victorian decor. They offer cookies at night and coffee, bagels, and juice in the morning. Such a good find.

Stayed here on a Thursday night. I used Yelp! to find this place. It is a great alternative to the chain and airport places in/around Portland. It is a nice walk and quick cab ride from the Old Port. Our room was very large and had a large closet. The private bathroom in the hall was no problem and kinda fun (our room key opened the bathroom). We loved our stay there and especially the price. For anyone looking to stay in Portland, I strongly suggest this place. It is a hidden jewel for sure. Also, check their website for last minute deals. Looks like you can get a room for even cheaper if you wait.

I booked a room here last minute as I was traveling down from Lovell, Maine on a Sunday on my way to Providence, Rhode Island. I had a stopover at Allagash Brewing on Monday morning before I finished my drive down to Providence, so I was looking for a place to stay in Portland. As I would be arriving fairly late and leaving reasonably early, I didn't want to spend very much on a room, and the Inn at St. John was very affordable, especially compared to everything else in the area. The only problem: SHARED BATHROOM! This absolutely terrified me, but I thought of the bargain price and figured it could not be too bad, it was only for one night. I was extremely and pleasantly surprised. My twin-bedded room was very small, but very well equipped, with a fridge, TV, sink, bath amenities, etc. It was also very clean and had a lovely light fixture. The shared bathroom was nothing to fear, either. It was spotlessly clean and there was never anyone in there when I needed to get in. The check in and check out procedure was quick and easy and the staff was extremely courteous and helpful. The breakfast area and foods and beverages provided in the morning were lovely, as is the inn itself. My only (tiny) issue was lack of parking. There were never any available spaces in the Inn's lot, but after check in I was told it was permissible to park in the lot belonging to the restaurant behind the Inn. I would absolutely stay here again!

Loved it! Beautifully-appointed rooms with delightful charm and character. Charming lobby with tea & cookies handy. The staff was ever so friendly and helpful. Can hardly wait to return! The only drawback is that it is a bit of a hike to the Old Port & Arts Districts; we walked down & cabbed it back.

We only stayed one night but recieved excellent customer service. The room was clean and beautiful (Although I am not much for victorian). The place was better than the pictures, the price was unbelievable, and the amenities were above and beyond. We usually stay at the Hilton and I believe this stay was better. Great location. I cannot say one bad thing our stay (okay, so I did not like the color combination of the towels). We did not have a car so i cannot comment on the parking and we stayed on the first floor so I am unfamilier with the stairs. I say- stay the night here.

Chill place, the price was right. If your up for a tame adventure go for it or if you just like places with history. I am about 100% sure that an old sailor ghost haunts the place just because ...why not. Staff was kind and the wall paper was fantastic !

Every single time we travel to Maine (5 - 6 times a year), we stay at the Inn at St John without even considering staying anywhere else. Not only do we love the great diversity of rooms they have to offer (each and every one is different than the next), but you can't beat the price. We just stayed there this weekend for $49, a beautiful queen bedroom with a fridge and plenty of space and a private bathroom down the hall. During the summer and peak fall season, the prices do go up, but still not over the top for the area and in comparison to the other hotels around. The service is friendly, the rooms are great and the price is right. We'll keep going back!

When we visited Portland, we stayed here and LOVED it! Not only was the room great, but the service was great. We had gone there with bedandbreakfast.com gift certificates and was told at first that we needed to use them for online booking. We realized our mistake and paid for the room without the GCs. One of the employees (sorry, didn't catch your name!) went completely out of his way to call the company and ask if the Inn at St. John could use the certificates. He eventually got the ok (about a week after our stay!) and refunded our money and honored the gift certificates. You just don't get that kind of service! When we make our way back to Portland, we will definitely be staying here again!
