I have been to EdgeWater Farm Bed and Breakfast three times in the past three years and I plan to return there again next summer. Popham Beach is nearby and between swimming at this beautiful beach and experiencing welcoming and attractive accomodations at the bed and breakfast, this place on the map has become my favorite vacation spot. I love the lush perennial gardens, apple trees, and sweet grassy paths that surround this home. Inside, there is a lively and interesting collection of art and books so if you forgot to bring reading material there is a good chance you'll find something here. The common space where breakfast is served is large, open, and full of light coming in from sliding glass doors. The bedrooms are all painted with an artful flair and with an eye for color and I found my room very comfortable. Bill and Carol are kind hosts ready with suggestions (if asked for) of places to explore whether it is beach or town. And the breakfasts? Really wonderful and fresh as in fresh from the garden. This is a place to come back to, summer after summer--an experience to be woven in with the best of summer memories.

Hubs and I were in Maine for about a week, enjoying the glorious land that is Maine. Our last two nights were supposed to be at the Edgewater Farm Bed and Breakfast. We made the reservation over the phone. I was very excited, because there were so many excellent reviews from others who had enjoyed themselves. We arrived in the late afternoon, and were shown to our room. The grounds of the farm are quite lovely, lots of flowers and veggies. Entering the home, the owner showed us the area where breakfast is served, then showed us upstairs to our quaint little room Now, I understand that B&Bs all have a personality of their very own. The decor and personality of this home was provided by someone who went to every garage sale and estate sale in a tri-county area, and bought up all of the used bedding, towels, and table linens in the 1990s, and has been using them since then. The bed was very soft, like the sort of mattress that one might find in a cheap motel. The towels in the bathroom were of mismatched colors, and rough, oh, so rough. There were signs in the bedroom, the bathroom, and by the front door that instruct you to take short showers and not waste water. I just could not get over how uncomfortable the entire home felt. The walls in the house were quite thin, as I could hear the guests in the room across the hall speaking in hissed whispers as I walked by. If I can hear whispering through the door, imagine what a regular conversation would sound like. But, we made these arrangements in advance, and, what are you going to do. So, we went back into town for dinner, and decided to go back to the farm and relax. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to relax. The bed is uncomfortable, and there isn't anywhere to hang out on a couch. The only place to go is to the main dining area, which also happens to be the only place in the house where the wifi works. The owner's wife had returned, and greeted us. In the meantime, we tried to figure out how to turn on the heat in our room. It turns out that our room is the only room in the house that did not have its own heat controls. I was freezing. We discussed this with the wife. She suggested that we turn the heat up to 60. Really? I am in a fleece, with a hat on and a puffy coat. No, I would like to turn it up higher. Now, she is irritated with me, and tells me that she likes to sleep in a room that is cool, around 55 degrees. We go back and forth on this for awhile. She agrees to let us turn the heat up, but the insists that we absolutely CANNOT open the window. Why, my husband asks. Because it is wasteful. By this time, I have had it. Between the mattress, the rough exfoliation towels, and general uncomfortable nature of the B&B, I just didn't think I could take it anymore. When I travel, I want to be comfortable. If you have a B&B where strangers book rooms and you agree to provide accommodations, I hope that you understand that these people will pay you money, and they will use the heat, use water, and want to be comfortable. The wife was just rude. And, the expectation that we would stay there, not use the heat or the water was just ridiculous. I understand that resources are precious - we are from Seattle, which is the Mothership for recycling and carbon footprint reduction. But this was just unfriendly and ungracious. So, we decided to leave. Upon our departure, the owner informed me that she would be able to evaluate any Tripadvisor review that I might leave, as if she might be able to edit it or change it. Thankfully, they do not require payment up front. I am sure that there is a market for this type of accommodation, but I am not that person. I would NEVER come back here, nor would I recommend. I wish the owners the best, and hope to never see that unpleasant lady again.
