After having breakfast numerous times at Joseph's by the Sea, I finally got there for dinner. The waitstaff at breakfast tends to be young, though very polite and attentive. The waitstaff at night is more of the same, only more mature and polished. I was a woman dining alone and, rather than tuck me away in a corner, I was seated window side where the view overlooking Saco Bay and the islands was lovely. The spinach arugula salad with sliced strawberries was excellent. The entree, pan-seared haddock, was creatively prepared and delicious. Serving sizes were perfect: not too large and not too small. The menu descriptions did not fully articulate the flavors and presentation of the entree and dessert, so if you have food sensitivities or strong preferences, you should ask the server in advance for a detailed description. For example, the menu indicated the haddock would be served atop braised greens while it was actually served atop wild rice with a vegetable mix on the side. The dessert was described as cheesecake with blueberries but turned out to be lemon-flavored cheesecake with fresh blueberries (and I'm not very big on lemon). Despite these surprises, the food was perfectly prepared and delicious.

I have to say I have very low expectations going to Joseph's in OOB, but had a lovely time. The space is beautiful and we sat right next to the open large windows looking out to the ocean. You would never even know you where right in the middle of the hustle and bustle that is OOB in the summer. The staff was fun and we enjoyed the experience... However, the food just wasn't that great. Not terrible by any means, but in comparison to similarly priced restaurants in Portland, a step below. BUT, we were able to have a couple glasses of Prosecco and walk back to our beach house. If you don't want to go very far, it's certainly the best restaurant in OOB!

Stayed next door and tried this place for brunch on a weekend morning. They sat us at a lovely table facing the ocean. All the windows were wide open, so we felt like we were outside but did not have the sun beating down on us. Our server was great. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Would have given them a five if they would have had a better bagel selection and low fat cream cheese. Not much in the way of healthy food options, but otherwise worth a visit. We would go back.

In Maine on vacation we went to Joseph's for dinner on Tuesday evening. Not extremely busy. Dinner was good, Caesar salad, Steamed & baked lobsters, drinks, dessert. Waitress did a fair but she seemed annoyed when we asked her for water & bread. I've never had a waitress tell me to "can you wait a moment" when I asked for water & bread. We are generous tippers but will tip accordingly.

Great place for breakfast. The room we ate in faced the beach and was nice and open with the sun shining in. Service was relatively fast compared to a few other places I had been to nearby and the waitress was nice. I got the veggie omelet and was very happy with it. Prices were a little expensive for a breakfast place, but compared to all the other options nearby it was definitely worth it. I would highly recommend.

We've been coming here for breakfast every day of our Maine stay last year and this - always a great experience. Delicious breakfast choices, good coffee, friendly and attentive service. We take terrace sitting and the view of the water and fresh air make every breakfast pleasant and relaxing.

My husband and I dined here passing through OOB, as it looked like the only decent non-fried seafood place. The parking lot was nearly full at 8pm on a Sunday night but we found a spot very close to the door. Yay for free parking! We walked in and were seated right away by a pleasant hostess. Our server came over promptly, introduced herself and dropped ice waters. She returned a few minutes later with a bread basket and regular whipped butter as well as delicious kalamata olive butter. Nice touch with the olive butter, never had that before and it was great! The menu wasn't huge but there was plenty to chose from. Hubs and I split the steamed mussels appetizer and it was super fresh and DELICIOUS! We also split a side garden salad (loaded with veggies, they even cut up some onions for me on request) and the Saco Bay soup. This. Soup. Was. Awesome. Seriously, go eat the Saco Bay soup right now. A large porcelain bowl filled to the brim with scallops, mussels, fish, and seaweed in a fennel tomato broth, served with some cheesy crostini croutons on the side. YUMMY! The server provided sharing plates and was attentive without being overbearing. By this time, the other patrons had since left so we had the dining room to ourselves. We would have normally had a view of the ocean front but it was dark out and very foggy. The muzak was less than desirable but it wasn't offensive or too loud. Our entrees arrived, perfectly timed, cooked to order. My husband got the Swordfish and he said it was good flavor, presentation and size. I got the Orecchiette Pasta Maison and DEVOURED it. The seafood was all super duper fresh, and the server said all but the mussels were caught locally. (I think she said they were PEI mussels, not sure) Portion sizes were adequate, certainly big enough to bring home leftovers. Prices were about what you'd expect for a fine dining seafood experience, but not outrageous. The server was super nice considering we got there just before closing (unintentionally) and kept her there well past closing time. We did not feel rushed at all. Bottom line: Top notch customer service, delicious, fresh, cooked to order seafood, and a clean inviting intimate atmosphere with safe ample free parking. We would definitely come back here again!

We went back to Joseph's and while the food was very good, the hostess managed to seat us and another party, and then not assign a server to either of our tables. After over 20 minutes of being completely invisible and ignored by everyone including the young woman refilling everyone else's coffee, I finally said something. Someone from the other table also went up at about the same time to express their displeasure. After looking over my last review, it's clear that the weak link at Joseph's is the front of the house. And as much as the food is tasty, the coffee is surprisingly good, and the portions are decent, I sort of hope that my father in law wants to go somewhere else for Father's Day next year. It's just insulting to be ignored while so many people around us were being treated well.

Absolute worst dinner we have ever had!! When we asked to place an order for an appetizer the waitress said she could not do that unless she takes our entire order because the kitchen likes it that way - ha??? LONG piece of hair in the 9.00 salad which was only romaine lettuce and a piece of bacon, waitress said she had no idea how that happened - really?? Manager came over and provided us with the most insincere apology but said she would take it off the bill - thank you very much!! Brought out 1 appetizer for 1 person, when asked five minutes later where my appetizer was the waitress said she will bring it out when the other appetizer comes (which was a salad - didn't realize that was an app) - HA???? So I sat and watched them eat their appetizer. Finally received my app, cold as ice - lobster fried pancake, had two tiny pieces of lobster and was sitting in a pile of grease. Never refilled water glasses, had to ask for refills on all drinks. Olive butter was disgusting!! Waitress never removed dirty dishes or bread basket. Finally received our meal, ordered lobster and tenderloin medallions. Asked for medium well, received medium rare. Told the waitress, she couldn't care less. She walked away and came back five minute later and asked if we wanted them to cook it longer. UMMM no, we're all set. One of the pieces of lobster was not cooked, it was raw. When we showed the waitress, she said oh, that's because it's a soft shell lobster. WHAT??? Like I said, worst dinner ever, wait staff needs a lot of improvement. Oh and it this place is so high class and upscale why did we only get 1 fork?? Spent almost $200 bucks for the worst dinner I've ever had. Stick with the pier fries for 2.00, way better!!!

Was VERY disappointed... We had a party of 11 for a birthday celebration thinking this would be a top notch place to go... 5 out 11 of us were UNHAPPY with our meals; haddock was frozen versus fresh, shrimp and scallops were tiny as if out of a can, and the pasta was overcooked. As for the beef selection, the steak was like "rubber". Given these meals are all over the price point of $20, the portions were of "tapa's" size. I'm sorry to say that I'll most likely never visit this restaurant again; last two visits weren't that much better. Also, do NOT plan on bringing your own birthday cake; even though they don't offer one, as it's a $2.00 per person cake cutting fee!

Yikes. The chowder was indistinguishable from a Progresso canned soup. And that's basically how everything else went down. You'd be better off with fried clams or something of the sort from one of the many Maine seafood shacks. Oh, and Yelp's advertised vegetarian risotto is a thing of the past -- veg heads beware.

Best restaurant in OOB. My husband and I were married this past year in there courtyard and it was perfect!! Louise and the staff were very accomodating to us and our guests. We had dinner after on the second floor over looking the water and had access to a patio where we had our first dance. Waitstaff was supurb and the food was excellent. Could not ask for more. We went to Joseph's last night for the first time to celebrate our 7th Anniversary! We've been wanting to go here for so long and kept putting it off. We will be going here a lot more now. We're just sorry we haven't been going here more often! What a spectacular dinner we both had. We made reservations for two around 4:00 p.m. for 6:30 with no problem..and they sat us upstairs in front of a window with beautiful views. Our waitress was very nice! We were served waters and rolls immediately with two kinds of butter. One was an olive based butter. Which I really don't like olives and it was really good! We ordered Lobster potato pancake and fresh mozzarella it had olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Both were very delicious. The Lobster potato was filled with lobster chunks!! For dinner I had peppercorn filet mignon and my husband had Rib Eye steak. My Peppercorn steak melted in your mouth. The only bad thing I can actually say is my husband asked for medium rare and it was really rare..and he had to send it back and they had to cook it more. But, it came back and it was delicious. That was the only problem we really had...BUT, I'm still giving 5 stars because everything was fantastic. Usually I would not. But, this place is THAT GOOD. We will be back for brunch for sure. I'm adding some pictures of our meals and views.

I would have rated it 3 stars, if it werent so pricey. Came here for dinner on a Sunday night, had reservations, so was seated in the patio area with a GREAT view of the ocean. Sadly, probably the best part of the meal. First, our waitress. Though nice, and was never nasty or anything, did the BARE MINIMUM for us. I was surprised when she took our order and werent read any specials. A little while later, we heard another waitress reading off the specials to another table. The only times she came by was to either take our order, bring our food, or take plates away. Never came by to check on us. Never asked if we needed anything. Just gave us our food and left. And we didnt see her again until we were done. So like i said, the BARE MINIMUM. The food- it as okay. we ordered the shrimp cocktail as an app. It was pretty good, probably the best food item we ordered. 3 large shrimp is all we got though. I ordered the Lobster Sautee and the wife ordered the Seafood Medley. The lobster in the sautee was very small. I'd say a 1 lb lobster. it was over fregola pasta (which is kinda like rice), which was very bland. My wife's seafood medley was better, but seafood didnt seem as fresh as it should have (being in Maine). The bread basket in the beginning was good and warm, and was given almond butter, which was good. Overall, the experience didnt match the price. Probably would not visit again.

We have been going to this restaurant for dinner and breakfast every year for the last 8 years, during our vacation. This year will be the last. 8 years ago, the meals were fantastic, with a great wine list and wonderful fresh seafood. The chef's creativity shone through, and made the meals and experience worth the high prices. However, this year was a different story. The menu choices were under-whelming. The fresh catch was tilapia! Tell me where you catch tilapia in Maine! The lobster dinners were well over $30, with lobster at $3 a pound at the lobster shacks. I chose a pork tenderloin rouladen, which was made with ham, cheese, pickles, and pork - it tasted like a cuban sandwich. Not the flavor profile I was expecting from a fine dining restaurant. The wine list was less exciting than a stroll down the wine aisle at Food Lion. The location is beautiful, with water views, and a nice deck outside of the upstairs dining room. However, there are many new restaurants in town that simply out-shine good old Joseph's these days. Sorry!

We came here for dinner and ending up staying for breakfast...well, we made reservations for breakfast every day that we were here! I had amazing crepes on Sunday that brought me back to my childhood in Europe, and the Strawberry Pavlova on the dessert menu at dinnertime is still drool-inducing. Don't skip the semolina crusted calamari appetizer. It was a delightful, lighter spin that was a good-sized portion for sharing. Waitstaff are very polite and capable; the hostess ended up remembering our names for the second (and third) visits!! :)

This was definetly the best dinner we had during our long weekend in Maine. Dinner started off with the most amazing olive butter and rolls. I just wish they sold it...I would've taken some home. We had calamari and the lobster potato pancakes for apps. The calamari melted in our mouths...not rubbery at all and so fresh. The pancakes were amazing with big chunks of lobster throughout. For dinner we had the lobster saute with orzo pasta which was delicious but I did come across 2 pieces of shell/cartilage while eating it and there may have been a bit too much butter on the dish but still great. My husband had the haddock pan fried which was also really moist and buttery...very good. I would definitely recommend it for a special night out and a break from the boardwalk junk.

Excellent! Without question, the best dining in Old Orchard Beach. My wife had the traditional Maine lobster. For apps, we recommend the Saco soup and the lobster pancakes - neither will dissapoint. I had the maison pasta and it was fantastic! I recommend Joseph's by the sea for anyone downeast looking for a romantic evening with great food and a great view.

We stopped here for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised by reasonable prices and a great al fresco patio on which to sit. Most of old Orchard Beach may have seen better days, but this restaurant is not most of old Orchard Beach. This place is in its prime and the food is outstanding. The view, the ambiance,service, and food were more than I had anticipated. The seafood was cooked to perfection, and the chowder was easily one of the best I've had in New England. I was so impressed with my dinner that I returned the following morning for their Sunday brunch. And as Shakespeare once said therein lies the rub. I would have easily rated this restaurant five stars had it not been for the mediocre, or possibly sub-par breakfast, and service that I experienced the following morning. The sausage and the toast were ice cold. It is as if they had been precooked and were warmed to be placed upon my plate. unfortunately, the warming did not work. I would have returned my meal but my waitress was nowhere to be found. I got up and started wandering around looking for my waitress so that I could get a second cup of coffee and have my ice cold sausage replaced. I found her sitting in another room with all the other waitstaff talking and joking and having a good time paying no attention whatsoever to her patrons. It seems that they were waiting for the restaurant to close its brunch so that COULD be divvied up and handed out. Believe me, after having to hunt down my waitperson, she didn't have to hang around waiting for my tip. It's amazing that I could be served so well, with such an outstanding meal, in the evening, and then the following morning be so utterly disappointed. When I complained to the maître d' she did remove my breakfast from the bill. although I appreciated her removing the breakfast from the bill, a free breakfast is not the reason that one travels hundreds of miles to partake any particular restaurant.

Ambiance and attentive service elevates this establishment during the breakfast hours to a level usually not reached by standard fare. There's a few jazzy items but for the most its eggs, bacon and pancakes. I like the ocean view patio and the super fresh coffee. Sometimes I get an omelet but if I'm extra hungry the Mariners Breakfast is where its at. Eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, toast and pancakes. Yum! And unlike IHOP where its slapped on a plate this food is carefully presented, nothing unseemly escapes the kitchen. The dinner menu looks pretty impressive, I'll have to try and sample it the week after labor day.

The view is five stars--ocean, dune grass, sea birds, a pretty backyard garden. Gorgeous. The service is also very good, attentive and friendly without being overbearing. I agree that this would be a lovely place to host a wedding, anniversary party, or other special occasion. The food, at least at dinner this summer, is more like three stars. My daughter and I went here in 2009 and had a wonderful, memorable meal: scallops in a super citrus beurre blanc and a mixed seafood pasta that just tasted like Provence. This year, things were considerably flatter. Not terrible, mind you, just...ordinary. The seafood remains impeccably fresh, but the seasoning of several dishes (that same seafood pasta, a "southwestern" clam chowder that seemed straight-up New England to me, and a sauteed haddock with tomato and severely undercooked leeks) was one-dimensional. I suspect turnover in the kitchen. The upshot is that Joseph's now serves a slightly prettier, slightly more expensive version of the surf and turf classics available at many southern Maine "fancy" restaurants. Yes, this is a tourist area, so higher prices may go with the territory, but entrees at this price point ($18-30) can and should show a little more pizzazz. Bringing back the kind of cooking we saw at dinner in 2009 would make this a destination in every sense.

This has to be the nicest restaurant in this area. People think it's expensive, maybe for the area, but not compared to other places of this quality. The entire back window faces the ocean, so the view is beautiful. There is outside seating, the weather was not cooperating the week we were there, outside patio was not even used. We requested and got a table facing the water. The service was excellent, the time between courses was just right, we were not rushed, and did not wait too long. There was a water girl that kept our glasses full and never went below halfway. We were served warm rolls with regular and flavored butter. Most entrees were in the mid $20's and did not include salad..............that is reasonable for a nice restaurant in a resort area. No appetizer, but we got a salad to split with a great citrus dressing. My mom got seared scallops with a rhubarb sauce (the server brought her a sample of the sauce to try) , my husband got a seafood medley over pasta, I got the special-scallops with tomatoes in a garlic wine sauce over pasta..............all came with a seasonal vegetable medley. All were delicious. My mom & I shared an excellent chocolate torte (plenty for 2) served with REAL (not canned) whipped cream. This was our big night out for our vacation week and we were all extremely pleased with our choice.

I have a soft spot for Joseph's. When we started vacationing here, and then as summer residents, we would bring our kids here for breakfast. The breakfast menu is solid, if a bit static - a change-up would be nice once a season - but their standards are very, very good. Our kids go crazy over the cinnamon frenchtoast (which is very good), and we really enjoy the omelettes, which are at once generous and creative. Their Tuscan omelet brings together capicola, basil and sundried tomatoes for a truly unique take. The special weekend brunch menu adds some creative crepes and a delicious cream cheese and strawberry stuffed frenchtoast. And on a nice summer morning, it's hard to beat the sunny and open-air atmosphere of their patio, surrounded by large glass windows and a big screen door overlooking the beach. They really shine at dinner though. The mushroom stack and lobster potato pancake appetizers are amazing, and the dinner menu shines with a selection of meat, fish and pasta dishes, always bolstered by a few creative specials. I find their seafood dishes to be particularly tasty. I would say my favorite part of this place is the cozy bar. We always make sure to make time for a drink or two at the bar, and sometimes just eat right there. Creative, strong drinks and friendly faces, plus cozy decor. We are glad to have this place just one mile from our house!

Finding quality food off season in a beach town can be tricky. The only reason I went to Joseph's rather than Landmark was because it was closer to my house and I'd never been but read and heard great things. Upon entering the hostess warmly greeted me and my lady and allowed us to pick any table. Our waitress received the cabernet order and then the calamari appetizer. Bread came and we both ordered the pepper crusted filet mignon. Bread: Served in a basket, sourdough rolls and then a basic sliced white bread with traditional and olive butter. Meh. Appetizer: The calamari was soggy and lacking flavor. The chunks of roasted garlic was more enticing than the calamari itself. Served with the sliced white bread with a marinara sauce and melted cheese (?) Huh? Wine: The cabernet was a bit peppery and bitter but it didn't stop us from finishing the bottle. Entree: "Pepper crusted filet mignon- On a bed of fresh greens and a mild gorgonzola cream" ordered medium rare. First off, I understand "pepper crusted" could be terms for a bit of "texture" on the exterior of a steak however both our steaks came out charred, black. Medium rare was more of a medium cook and it was difficult to enjoy the steak while trying not to gag on the charred edges of the meat. The chef either presumed we hadn't read the menu or just needed to unload some excess ingredients but the "bed of fresh greens" was about 6 spinach leaves, broccoli, roasted potatoes, and cubed beets. What?! I was expecting this beautiful ($30) piece of meat with a nice mesclun or spinach accompanying it but instead I got this burnt anticlimactic beef with the chef's random assortment of veggies... Seriously spinach, broccoli, potatoes, and BEETS?!?! beauty in simplicity folks, y'all went way overboard. I can get past the weak calamari with makeshift pizza bread adorning the dish, the overpriced underpar steak with unannounced sides, and the cabernet which just didn't do it for me but the waitress jumped ship at this point and tarnished the entire experience. While we were waiting for the waitress to pick up the check and process the credit card, our table was overrun with flies... 3 large black flies and a few little gnats or fruit flies. OK... we were about to leave so no big deal. My lady friend then notices a fly in her wine glass... I told the waitress that the meal was great but that there was a fly in the wine. "Its fruit fly season" was her immediate response. No apology, no attempt to remove the glass from the table, just a quick dismissal of the observation. The waitress deserved no tip considering her concluding performance however she received $10 out of pity for her situation. Our amiable hostess asked how the meal was and I bypassed venting about the food and nonchalantly noted that there was a fly in the wine glass. She asked if the waitress had removed the glass and apologized and I told her that she replied with "its fruit fly season". I said if its rainy season does that justify a leaky roof, no. She apologized then as we were walking out the door we could hear the waitress bitching to the hostess that she cannot control the flies. The issue was not necessarily with the fly, the issue came with her effortless dismissal of a fly in the wine after we had been polite and friendly with her the entire evening. Josephs is a nice place with potential to be better and perhaps the end of the season blues was hitting the waitress however customer service is what guarantees a future with service related businesses and other than the flawless hostess, this place lacks greatly in this department.

I can't write this review fast enough... that is, after I finished vomitting. I had the Pasta Maison. the mussels were diner grade but tasted ok. The shrimp were frozen and not fresh. Ate a couple that tasted off, but thought it might be the ridiculous 80 's parsley and basil sprinkle. as soo as I smelled one that I knew was off, I stopped eating the bland dish entirely. took a shot of Jack in case it was microbial. a trick I learned from being a geijin eating train station sushi in Japan. didn't settle the stomach. first time in josephs and my last. we just moved 3 miles away and thought we'd try it since yelp gave it four stars. 8 minutes after leaving the place we arrived home. I asked my wife which one of our three bathrooms she'd prefer I would vomit in. after see tin was made the games began. the first round draft was relatively brief but relieved me of what Pasta Maison I did eat. ten minutes later came round two which relieved me of my breakfast at the Bad Dog Deli, and the light sensible lunch I ate hours before. I am writing this review not because they served me garbage that made me out violently. I am writing get it because of their reaction. as soon as round one was done, I called them to warn them they may have some bad seafood to keep them from serving it to anyone else, or perhaps killing them. their response? 'This has never happened before'... 'most likely when this happens it is food allergies' the service was crap... sitting at the bar we got to listen the the bartender talk to person after person about golf... while we had empty glasses. just avoid it. my experience won't shut this.place down, but please don't be the person who eats the spoiled mussel or shrimp that causes them to die.
While vacationing in Maine, we found this restaurant on this site. Much to our satisfaction, we were able to get in without a reservation AND they accommodated our infant daughter as well. In order to keep the ambiance for the rest of the patrons, the hostess graciously set up a table for us in a quieter semi-private room. However it had an excellent veiw of the ocean! The food: Pasta Maison - the pasta was a little overdone for this dish. They used angel hair pasta which doesnt hold up in a dish like ths. However, the concept and flavors were very good Jamaican Salmon - the flavors were straight out of the Caribbean. The salmon was moist and very flavorful Filet Mignon - cooked to PERFECTION! Fork tender and exceptionally seasoned. Best of both Worlds - This is their take on lobster topped filet. 2 center loin cuts - one topped with a claw and the other topped with half a tail. Again the meat was fork tender and had a perfect balanced seasoning to the lobster. The smashed potatoes were also an excellent consistency. Each dish came with a steamed medley of summer veggies. The wine list was short, but they accommodate several different varietals. The prices are a little high for the portions being served, but you're here in Vacationland. A meal like this in Boston or NYC would cost double! We enjoyed our dining experience here and will be returning.

The interior's rear dining room is beautiful w garage style glass doors that open wide to a spectacular view of sea grass, dunes & the Atlantic- beautiful! The breakfast was wholly disappointing. Out of our group of six only two were pleased & they both ordered the fresh berry waffles w fresh strawberry sauce. Out server was young, sweet & pleasant yet not quick & forgot ordered things a few times. Cold flavorless (except for the old oil taste) home fries- server tried again w a new batch which were just the same thing all over again. We were told a new cook was in training. Yikes! Big touristy summer Saterday in August - perhaps NOT the best time to train a new cook?! Salsa had green olives & celery in it- whoa- i didnt get it! Over all it was a poor excuse for breakfast. Perhaps if you stick to pancakes or waffles you may be safe. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I'm not sure if we had an off experience or not, but we were unimpressed. Came very early one evening so we wouldn't disturb other diners since my 18 month old was with us. No one else in the restaurant around 5 or 5:30 (it was late May so not high tourist season yet). The only other diner to come in was seated right next to us which we were hoping to avoid because while my daughter is well behaved, she is only 18 months old. It is not a great place for small children. Nothing on the menu for them and no small cups. But that's not what bothered me at all. I would never expect a nicer restaurant to cater to the young ones...no, what became a huge problem was the food. The Calamari appetizer was good. No complaints there. Dinner is the problem, and mine was terrible. I got lobster in a sherry sauce. First off, my lobster was so overcooked, I couldn't bite through several pieces. It was chewy and overall not good. But that's not the worst of it. The dish came with a sherry sauce. And the sherry sauce was just that. Sherry. No cream, no flavor, just straight up sherry and let me tell you, it was strong and not in an appetizing way. The dish came with this pearl like pasta which could have been good but it soaked up the sherry flavor and was not edible. I tried the lobster first and wasn't impressed but had only gotten a bite in before the waitress came back to check on how things were. I couldn't really give a true answer since I'd only had one bite so I didn't say anything then (I was also trying to feed my daughter so my attention wasn't solely on my food at the moment). She didn't come back for a bit and by the time she did I had decided it was not good. All in all I had about 4 bites of a large plate of food. I tried two bites of lobster, one bite of pasta and one combined bite of both to see if maybe I was wrong. When she returned to take our plates away, I mentioned that my dish was not good. She sort of apologized. You know the 'I'm sorry you didn't like it' apology. She asked what was wrong and I told her the alcohol flavor was overwhelming and not appetizing so she said she'd see if the chef would let her take it off our bill. She returned a few minutes later to say the chef said he wouldn't do anything because I waited until the end of the meal to say something. Seriously!?! She asked why I didn't say anything sooner and I explained that I hadn't really tried it when she stopped by the first time and I wanted to give it a fair shot. She also said that "I did order a dish with a sherry sauce so it will taste like sherry". I realize that and I've had plenty of sherry sauces in my life to know that they can be delicious....this was not one of those. She offered a free dessert but we were ready to go and declined. In the end, I paid over $25 for four bites of a terrible dish. Oh, that's not all, in all fairness we didn't mention this at the restaurant so they didn't have a chance to right this wrong because my dad said his meal was still ok. But he had a surf and turf that was ordered medium rare but cooked to well done. His lobster was also over cooked but he's a very forgiving guy...I usually am too, but I don't think we'll be back even though we live 5 minutes away.

Wonderful meal. I decided to just have appetizers. The Saco Bay soup and then calamari dipped in its broth were great. The lobster potato pancake had a good amount of lobster. My husband had the salmon. He usually does not like mango cream but on the side, he loved it. We are going back tomorrow for breakfast. The waitress was a little slow. The decor was beautiful and we sat by a window overlooking the water. We would definitely recommend this establishment!

We chose this restaurant as our "adult night" dinner place during our family vacation. We were seated on the terrace which was very nice. The view is great! The food was good, but didn't totally knock my socks off. It was a little pricey, $600 for 6 of us (that included two bottles of wine, appetizers and desserts in addition to our entrees). We shared a couple of appetizers and the mozzarella/tomato/salad was really tasty. My sister enjoyed her swordfish also. I ordered "The Best of Both Worlds", beef tenderloin and a lobster tail. The lobster was delicious! The steak was a disappointment. I ordered it medium and it came medium well. I flagged down a passing waitress and let her know it was over cooked and she took it away. A few minutes later, our waitress returned with my original plate and told me it was not over cooked and it's just the lighting that made it appear that way. I was kind astounded that they'd tell a customer that they were incorrect. I hardly ever send food back at a restaurant, but any time I've done it, they've graciously replaced the meal. In this case, I was told they could do it over if I really wanted it, although it was cooked medium according to their standards. I opted for it to be cooked medium rare this time, and we all agreed it came back even more well done. I couldn't send it back again so my brother-in-law ate it. That was a bit of a bummer from a customer service standpoint. The rest of the meal was really good and we enjoyed it. But service could definitely have been better, especially with those prices.

Joseph's was a nice surprise in a land populated by "fish camp" like seafood restaurants who pump several hundred of diners through each meal, and fast food places. Quiet, relaxed, and refined, located just a couple of block from the pier, Joseph's dinning room is nicely decorated and enjoys a spectacular view of the ocean. We stopped in for breakfast and completely enjoyed it. I had a sinful dish ; caramelized stuffed French toast. French toast, stuffed with cream cheese, sliced bananas, and strawberries topped with a Caramel syrup. Wow, it was great. Service was attentive and relaxed. The staff, though young, was on the ball. Stop by if you're in the area and ready for a change...

After having breakfast numerous times at Joseph's by the Sea, I finally got there for dinner. The waitstaff at breakfast tends to be young, though very polite and attentive. The waitstaff at night is more of the same, only more mature and polished. I was a woman dining alone and, rather than tuck me away in a corner, I was seated window side where the view overlooking Saco Bay and the islands was lovely. The spinach arugula salad with sliced strawberries was excellent. The entree, pan-seared haddock, was creatively prepared and delicious. Serving sizes were perfect: not too large and not too small. The menu descriptions did not fully articulate the flavors and presentation of the entree and dessert, so if you have food sensitivities or strong preferences, you should ask the server in advance for a detailed description. For example, the menu indicated the haddock would be served atop braised greens while it was actually served atop wild rice with a vegetable mix on the side. The dessert was described as cheesecake with blueberries but turned out to be lemon-flavored cheesecake with fresh blueberries (and I'm not very big on lemon). Despite these surprises, the food was perfectly prepared and delicious.

I have to say I have very low expectations going to Joseph's in OOB, but had a lovely time. The space is beautiful and we sat right next to the open large windows looking out to the ocean. You would never even know you where right in the middle of the hustle and bustle that is OOB in the summer. The staff was fun and we enjoyed the experience... However, the food just wasn't that great. Not terrible by any means, but in comparison to similarly priced restaurants in Portland, a step below. BUT, we were able to have a couple glasses of Prosecco and walk back to our beach house. If you don't want to go very far, it's certainly the best restaurant in OOB!

Stayed next door and tried this place for brunch on a weekend morning. They sat us at a lovely table facing the ocean. All the windows were wide open, so we felt like we were outside but did not have the sun beating down on us. Our server was great. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Would have given them a five if they would have had a better bagel selection and low fat cream cheese. Not much in the way of healthy food options, but otherwise worth a visit. We would go back.

In Maine on vacation we went to Joseph's for dinner on Tuesday evening. Not extremely busy. Dinner was good, Caesar salad, Steamed & baked lobsters, drinks, dessert. Waitress did a fair but she seemed annoyed when we asked her for water & bread. I've never had a waitress tell me to "can you wait a moment" when I asked for water & bread. We are generous tippers but will tip accordingly.

Great place for breakfast. The room we ate in faced the beach and was nice and open with the sun shining in. Service was relatively fast compared to a few other places I had been to nearby and the waitress was nice. I got the veggie omelet and was very happy with it. Prices were a little expensive for a breakfast place, but compared to all the other options nearby it was definitely worth it. I would highly recommend.

They claim to have looked up my credit card bill to contradict my review (they claim my credit card was charged at 9:20). This is inaccurate, as my party paid cash. Upscale restaurant relative to the Old Orchard Beach surroundings. Food is very good and the ambiance is great. Most tables have a view of the ocean. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food: The lobster bisque is a great starter. No pieces of lobster in it, but still a great bisque. I ordered the Lobster sauté special over angel hair pasta and it was very good. I have also tried the Lobster pie which comes served in the full lobster (very cool) and has amazing stuffing. If I'm looking for a good (but somewhat pricey) dining experience in the area, Joseph's is near the top of my list.

The restaurant is really impressive. It has a great ambiance, great location, and a very well trained and friendly staff. The food was outstanding. The appetizers we excellent (home made mozzarella!!) and the lobster scallop sauté over angel hair pasta was the best I have ever had. My husband and I dined here passing through OOB, as it looked like the only decent non-fried seafood place. The parking lot was nearly full at 8pm on a Sunday night but we found a spot very close to the door. Yay for free parking! We walked in and were seated right away by a pleasant hostess. Our server came over promptly, introduced herself and dropped ice waters. She returned a few minutes later with a bread basket and regular whipped butter as well as delicious kalamata olive butter. Nice touch with the olive butter, never had that before and it was great! The menu wasn't huge but there was plenty to chose from. Hubs and I split the steamed mussels appetizer and it was super fresh and DELICIOUS! We also split a side garden salad (loaded with veggies, they even cut up some onions for me on request) and the Saco Bay soup. This. Soup. Was. Awesome. Seriously, go eat the Saco Bay soup right now. A large porcelain bowl filled to the brim with scallops, mussels, fish, and seaweed in a fennel tomato broth, served with some cheesy crostini croutons on the side. YUMMY! The server provided sharing plates and was attentive without being overbearing. By this time, the other patrons had since left so we had the dining room to ourselves. We would have normally had a view of the ocean front but it was dark out and very foggy. The muzak was less than desirable but it wasn't offensive or too loud. Our entrees arrived, perfectly timed, cooked to order. My husband got the Swordfish and he said it was good flavor, presentation and size. I got the Orecchiette Pasta Maison and DEVOURED it. The seafood was all super duper fresh, and the server said all but the mussels were caught locally. (I think she said they were PEI mussels, not sure) Portion sizes were adequate, certainly big enough to bring home leftovers. Prices were about what you'd expect for a fine dining seafood experience, but not outrageous. The server was super nice considering we got there just before closing (unintentionally) and kept her there well past closing time. We did not feel rushed at all. Bottom line: Top notch customer service, delicious, fresh, cooked to order seafood, and a clean inviting intimate atmosphere with safe ample free parking. We would definitely come back here again!

We went back to Joseph's and while the food was very good, the hostess managed to seat us and another party, and then not assign a server to either of our tables. After over 20 minutes of being completely invisible and ignored by everyone including the young woman refilling everyone else's coffee, I finally said something. Someone from the other table also went up at about the same time to express their displeasure. After looking over my last review, it's clear that the weak link at Joseph's is the front of the house. And as much as the food is tasty, the coffee is surprisingly good, and the portions are decent, I sort of hope that my father in law wants to go somewhere else for Father's Day next year. It's just insulting to be ignored while so many people around us were being treated well.

The lobster was steamed so much it shrunk to half its size. The haddock was a fairly small portion. The corn and clam chowder had a nice flavor but could have been thicker. Their Oliver butter and bread was pretty good. The view was impeccable on the patio.

I went for breakfast and I have to say we sat in the terrace and it was opened up to the outside. It was the most amazing view of the ocean and I totally felt as if I were on vacation. I wasn't as impressed with the food, but I only had eggs, sausage and an english muffin. I gave it four stars simply because of the overall experience and the fact that they seemed to have a classier feel than anything else in Old Orchard Beach.

On our first visit, Erika, at the bar, a fellow Vermonter,was very helpful helping us plan our day trip to Maine's local breweries. The next night we went back for dinner and had a great dinner experience, good food, good service,good wine. Absolute worst dinner we have ever had!! When we asked to place an order for an appetizer the waitress said she could not do that unless she takes our entire order because the kitchen likes it that way - ha??? LONG piece of hair in the 9.00 salad which was only romaine lettuce and a piece of bacon, waitress said she had no idea how that happened - really?? Manager came over and provided us with the most insincere apology but said she would take it off the bill - thank you very much!! Brought out 1 appetizer for 1 person, when asked five minutes later where my appetizer was the waitress said she will bring it out when the other appetizer comes (which was a salad - didn't realize that was an app) - HA???? So I sat and watched them eat their appetizer. Finally received my app, cold as ice - lobster fried pancake, had two tiny pieces of lobster and was sitting in a pile of grease. Never refilled water glasses, had to ask for refills on all drinks. Olive butter was disgusting!! Waitress never removed dirty dishes or bread basket. Finally received our meal, ordered lobster and tenderloin medallions. Asked for medium well, received medium rare. Told the waitress, she couldn't care less. She walked away and came back five minute later and asked if we wanted them to cook it longer. UMMM no, we're all set. One of the pieces of lobster was not cooked, it was raw. When we showed the waitress, she said oh, that's because it's a soft shell lobster. WHAT??? Like I said, worst dinner ever, wait staff needs a lot of improvement. Oh and it this place is so high class and upscale why did we only get 1 fork?? Spent almost $200 bucks for the worst dinner I've ever had. Stick with the pier fries for 2.00, way better!!!

Was VERY disappointed... We had a party of 11 for a birthday celebration thinking this would be a top notch place to go... 5 out 11 of us were UNHAPPY with our meals; haddock was frozen versus fresh, shrimp and scallops were tiny as if out of a can, and the pasta was overcooked. As for the beef selection, the steak was like "rubber". Given these meals are all over the price point of $20, the portions were of "tapa's" size. I'm sorry to say that I'll most likely never visit this restaurant again; last two visits weren't that much better. Also, do NOT plan on bringing your own birthday cake; even though they don't offer one, as it's a $2.00 per person cake cutting fee!

Made reservations last night at Joseph's. It's a nice looking place. Very modern ad fresh looking. We went at night so we couldn't see the sea. The waitress we had was extremely nice and personable. I had the mushroom torte and the lobster special which was made with cream sauce, big chunks of lobster, veggies, and angel hair pasta. My friend got the calamari appetizer and their lobster and veggie sauté. We shared an amazing dessert - saffron creme brûlée with lavender-lemon cookies. The only reason I docked a star was because I didn't particularly enjoy their mixed drinks. It was too strong but once our waitress realized I barely drank my lemon drop martini, she excluded from the bill so that was extremely nice of her. All in all, good food, good people, and great views. A little pricey but treat yourself once in a while!

Yikes. The chowder was indistinguishable from a Progresso canned soup. And that's basically how everything else went down. You'd be better off with fried clams or something of the sort from one of the many Maine seafood shacks. Oh, and Yelp's advertised vegetarian risotto is a thing of the past -- veg heads beware.

You cannot advertise an 'out of the ordinary' dining experience and then serve pre-packaged ultra-pasteurized milk for the coffee, and plastic tubs of Smuckers jelly at brunch. This is not 'out of the ordinary'. It is exactly the same as any motel chain. The restaurant was clean though.

Had dinner here for the second time in 2 years. Very good food with wonderful views of the ocean. We sat upstairs both times and loved the view out the windows. Great seafood and everyone in our party of 8 loved their food. If you are looking for good dinners this is highly recommended.

Best restaurant in OOB. My husband and I were married this past year in there courtyard and it was perfect!! Louise and the staff were very accomodating to us and our guests. We had dinner after on the second floor over looking the water and had access to a patio where we had our first dance. Waitstaff was supurb and the food was excellent. Could not ask for more. My family and I also frequent here for breakfast when in the area - which is also wonderful.

We went to Joseph's last night for the first time to celebrate our 7th Anniversary! We've been wanting to go here for so long and kept putting it off. We will be going here a lot more now. We're just sorry we haven't been going here more often! What a spectacular dinner we both had. We made reservations for two around 4:00 p.m. for 6:30 with no problem..and they sat us upstairs in front of a window with beautiful views. Our waitress was very nice! We were served waters and rolls immediately with two kinds of butter. One was an olive based butter. Which I really don't like olives and it was really good! We ordered Lobster potato pancake and fresh mozzarella it had olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Both were very delicious. The Lobster potato was filled with lobster chunks!! For dinner I had peppercorn filet mignon and my husband had Rib Eye steak. My Peppercorn steak melted in your mouth. The only bad thing I can actually say is my husband asked for medium rare and it was really rare..and he had to send it back and they had to cook it more. But, it came back and it was delicious. That was the only problem we really had...BUT, I'm still giving 5 stars because everything was fantastic. Usually I would not. But, this place is THAT GOOD. We will be back for brunch for sure. I would have rated it 3 stars, if it werent so pricey. Came here for dinner on a Sunday night, had reservations, so was seated in the patio area with a GREAT view of the ocean. Sadly, probably the best part of the meal. First, our waitress. Though nice, and was never nasty or anything, did the BARE MINIMUM for us. I was surprised when she took our order and werent read any specials. A little while later, we heard another waitress reading off the specials to another table. The only times she came by was to either take our order, bring our food, or take plates away. Never came by to check on us. Never asked if we needed anything. Just gave us our food and left. And we didnt see her again until we were done. So like i said, the BARE MINIMUM. The food- it as okay. we ordered the shrimp cocktail as an app. It was pretty good, probably the best food item we ordered. 3 large shrimp is all we got though. I ordered the Lobster Sautee and the wife ordered the Seafood Medley. The lobster in the sautee was very small. I'd say a 1 lb lobster. it was over fregola pasta (which is kinda like rice), which was very bland. My wife's seafood medley was better, but seafood didnt seem as fresh as it should have (being in Maine). The bread basket in the beginning was good and warm, and was given almond butter, which was good. Overall, the experience didnt match the price. Probably would not visit again.

We have been going to this restaurant for dinner and breakfast every year for the last 8 years, during our vacation. This year will be the last. 8 years ago, the meals were fantastic, with a great wine list and wonderful fresh seafood. The chef's creativity shone through, and made the meals and experience worth the high prices. However, this year was a different story. The menu choices were under-whelming. The fresh catch was tilapia! Tell me where you catch tilapia in Maine! The lobster dinners were well over $30, with lobster at $3 a pound at the lobster shacks. I chose a pork tenderloin rouladen, which was made with ham, cheese, pickles, and pork - it tasted like a cuban sandwich. Not the flavor profile I was expecting from a fine dining restaurant. The wine list was less exciting than a stroll down the wine aisle at Food Lion. The location is beautiful, with water views, and a nice deck outside of the upstairs dining room. However, there are many new restaurants in town that simply out-shine good old Joseph's these days. Sorry!

We came here for dinner and ending up staying for breakfast...well, we made reservations for breakfast every day that we were here! I had amazing crepes on Sunday that brought me back to my childhood in Europe, and the Strawberry Pavlova on the dessert menu at dinnertime is still drool-inducing. Don't skip the semolina crusted calamari appetizer. It was a delightful, lighter spin that was a good-sized portion for sharing. Waitstaff are very polite and capable; the hostess ended up remembering our names for the second (and third) visits!! :)

This was definetly the best dinner we had during our long weekend in Maine. Dinner started off with the most amazing olive butter and rolls. I just wish they sold it...I would've taken some home. We had calamari and the lobster potato pancakes for apps. The calamari melted in our mouths...not rubbery at all and so fresh. The pancakes were amazing with big chunks of lobster throughout. For dinner we had the lobster saute with orzo pasta which was delicious but I did come across 2 pieces of shell/cartilage while eating it and there may have been a bit too much butter on the dish but still great. My husband had the haddock pan fried which was also really moist and buttery...very good. I would definitely recommend it for a special night out and a break from the boardwalk junk.

Excellent! Without question, the best dining in Old Orchard Beach. My wife had the traditional Maine lobster. For apps, we recommend the Saco soup and the lobster pancakes - neither will dissapoint. I had the maison pasta and it was fantastic! I recommend Joseph's by the sea for anyone downeast looking for a romantic evening with great food and a great view.

Josephs is a favorite of mine to go to any time I go home to Maine. I had my rehearsal dinner here this summer and it was beyond fantastic. Highlights are the Pasta Maison which is to die for and my husband loves the baked stuffed lobster. Everything is good here - and I love the olive butter upon arrival. Highly recommend!

The view from this spot alone merits it three stars but the food was soild too. We stopped here for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised by reasonable prices and a great al fresco patio on which to sit. We got simple breakfasts of eggs toast and meat for two plus coffee for under twenty dollars. The dinner menu also looked promising though more pricy, arround twenty an entre. It would be a lovely spot if the food is excicuted as well as it sounds. I will definatly return on my next Maine trip.

We had dinner here, first time, and it was wonderful. We shared the apple & Gorgonzola appetizer, which was a perfect combination of flavors. We intended to pick 2 different dishes, but both wanted the Acadian stew and did not reqret our choice! We also enjoyed the after dinner "flavored" coffees, the timely service and knowledgeable wait staff and the ambiance. Will be back the next time we're on our way to Ferry Beach.

Most of old Orchard Beach may have seen better days, but this restaurant is not most of old Orchard Beach. This place is in its prime and the food is outstanding. The view, the ambiance,service, and food were more than I had anticipated. The seafood was cooked to perfection, and the chowder was easily one of the best I've had in New England. I was so impressed with my dinner that I returned the following morning for their Sunday brunch. And as Shakespeare once said therein lies the rub. I would have easily rated this restaurant five stars had it not been for the mediocre, or possibly sub-par breakfast, and service that I experienced the following morning. The sausage and the toast were ice cold. It is as if they had been precooked and were warmed to be placed upon my plate. unfortunately, the warming did not work. I would have returned my meal but my waitress was nowhere to be found. I got up and started wandering around looking for my waitress so that I could get a second cup of coffee and have my ice cold sausage replaced. I found her sitting in another room with all the other waitstaff talking and joking and having a good time paying no attention whatsoever to her patrons. It seems that they were waiting for the restaurant to close its brunch so that COULD be divvied up and handed out. Believe me, after having to hunt down my waitperson, she didn't have to hang around waiting for my tip. It's amazing that I could be served so well, with such an outstanding meal, in the evening, and then the following morning be so utterly disappointed. When I complained to the maître d' she did remove my breakfast from the bill. although I appreciated her removing the breakfast from the bill, a free breakfast is not the reason that one travels hundreds of miles to partake any particular restaurant.

We are originally from NH and have lived in Oregon for 20 years. On one of our visits we ate here. I had the baked stuffed lobster and it was wonderful, best ever! Hubby had a steak and it was tender you could cut it with a folk and it melted in your mouth. Can't wait to come back!

Went away to old orchard beach for the weekend. First night out went to Joseph's for dinner. Got there about 8:45 not knowing what time they closed, which is 9, but sat and served us anyways. Food was excellent and wine was good. Not a very large wine by the glass list. Service was great and fast. Would drfintely go back if I visited again. Only complaint is the early closing hours.

Ambiance and attentive service elevates this establishment during the breakfast hours to a level usually not reached by standard fare. There's a few jazzy items but for the most its eggs, bacon and pancakes. I like the ocean view patio and the super fresh coffee. Sometimes I get an omelet but if I'm extra hungry the Mariners Breakfast is where its at. Eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, toast and pancakes. Yum! And unlike IHOP where its slapped on a plate this food is carefully presented, nothing unseemly escapes the kitchen. The dinner menu looks pretty impressive, I'll have to try and sample it the week after labor day.

The view is five stars--ocean, dune grass, sea birds, a pretty backyard garden. Gorgeous. The service is also very good, attentive and friendly without being overbearing. I agree that this would be a lovely place to host a wedding, anniversary party, or other special occasion. The food, at least at dinner this summer, is more like three stars. My daughter and I went here in 2009 and had a wonderful, memorable meal: scallops in a super citrus beurre blanc and a mixed seafood pasta that just tasted like Provence. This year, things were considerably flatter. Not terrible, mind you, just...ordinary. The seafood remains impeccably fresh, but the seasoning of several dishes (that same seafood pasta, a "southwestern" clam chowder that seemed straight-up New England to me, and a sauteed haddock with tomato and severely undercooked leeks) was one-dimensional. I suspect turnover in the kitchen. The upshot is that Joseph's now serves a slightly prettier, slightly more expensive version of the surf and turf classics available at many southern Maine "fancy" restaurants. Yes, this is a tourist area, so higher prices may go with the territory, but entrees at this price point ($18-30) can and should show a little more pizzazz. Bringing back the kind of cooking we saw at dinner in 2009 would make this a destination in every sense.

This has to be the nicest restaurant in this area. People think it's expensive, maybe for the area, but not compared to other places of this quality. The entire back window faces the ocean, so the view is beautiful. There is outside seating, the weather was not cooperating the week we were there, outside patio was not even used. We requested and got a table facing the water. The service was excellent, the time between courses was just right, we were not rushed, and did not wait too long. There was a water girl that kept our glasses full and never went below halfway. We were served warm rolls with regular and flavored butter. Most entrees were in the mid $20's and did not include salad..............that is reasonable for a nice restaurant in a resort area. No appetizer, but we got a salad to split with a great citrus dressing. My mom got seared scallops with a rhubarb sauce (the server brought her a sample of the sauce to try) , my husband got a seafood medley over pasta, I got the special-scallops with tomatoes in a garlic wine sauce over pasta..............all came with a seasonal vegetable medley. All were delicious. My mom & I shared an excellent chocolate torte (plenty for 2) served with REAL (not canned) whipped cream. This was our big night out for our vacation week and we were all extremely pleased with our choice.

I have a soft spot for Joseph's. When we started vacationing here, and then as summer residents, we would bring our kids here for breakfast. The breakfast menu is solid, if a bit static - a change-up would be nice once a season - but their standards are very, very good. Our kids go crazy over the cinnamon frenchtoast (which is very good), and we really enjoy the omelettes, which are at once generous and creative. Their Tuscan omelet brings together capicola, basil and sundried tomatoes for a truly unique take. The special weekend brunch menu adds some creative crepes and a delicious cream cheese and strawberry stuffed frenchtoast. And on a nice summer morning, it's hard to beat the sunny and open-air atmosphere of their patio, surrounded by large glass windows and a big screen door overlooking the beach. They really shine at dinner though. The mushroom stack and lobster potato pancake appetizers are amazing, and the dinner menu shines with a selection of meat, fish and pasta dishes, always bolstered by a few creative specials. I find their seafood dishes to be particularly tasty. I would say my favorite part of this place is the cozy bar. We always make sure to make time for a drink or two at the bar, and sometimes just eat right there. Creative, strong drinks and friendly faces, plus cozy decor. We are glad to have this place just one mile from our house!

Finding quality food off season in a beach town can be tricky. The only reason I went to Joseph's rather than Landmark was because it was closer to my house and I'd never been but read and heard great things. Upon entering the hostess warmly greeted me and my lady and allowed us to pick any table. Our waitress received the cabernet order and then the calamari appetizer. Bread came and we both ordered the pepper crusted filet mignon. Bread: Served in a basket, sourdough rolls and then a basic sliced white bread with traditional and olive butter. Meh. Appetizer: The calamari was soggy and lacking flavor. The chunks of roasted garlic was more enticing than the calamari itself. Served with the sliced white bread with a marinara sauce and melted cheese (?) Huh? Wine: The cabernet was a bit peppery and bitter but it didn't stop us from finishing the bottle. Entree: "Pepper crusted filet mignon- On a bed of fresh greens and a mild gorgonzola cream" ordered medium rare. First off, I understand "pepper crusted" could be terms for a bit of "texture" on the exterior of a steak however both our steaks came out charred, black. Medium rare was more of a medium cook and it was difficult to enjoy the steak while trying not to gag on the charred edges of the meat. The chef either presumed we hadn't read the menu or just needed to unload some excess ingredients but the "bed of fresh greens" was about 6 spinach leaves, broccoli, roasted potatoes, and cubed beets. What?! I was expecting this beautiful ($30) piece of meat with a nice mesclun or spinach accompanying it but instead I got this burnt anticlimactic beef with the chef's random assortment of veggies... Seriously spinach, broccoli, potatoes, and BEETS?!?! beauty in simplicity folks, y'all went way overboard. I can get past the weak calamari with makeshift pizza bread adorning the dish, the overpriced underpar steak with unannounced sides, and the cabernet which just didn't do it for me but the waitress jumped ship at this point and tarnished the entire experience. While we were waiting for the waitress to pick up the check and process the credit card, our table was overrun with flies... 3 large black flies and a few little gnats or fruit flies. OK... we were about to leave so no big deal. My lady friend then notices a fly in her wine glass... I told the waitress that the meal was great but that there was a fly in the wine. "Its fruit fly season" was her immediate response. No apology, no attempt to remove the glass from the table, just a quick dismissal of the observation. The waitress deserved no tip considering her concluding performance however she received $10 out of pity for her situation. Our amiable hostess asked how the meal was and I bypassed venting about the food and nonchalantly noted that there was a fly in the wine glass. She asked if the waitress had removed the glass and apologized and I told her that she replied with "its fruit fly season". I said if its rainy season does that justify a leaky roof, no. She apologized then as we were walking out the door we could hear the waitress bitching to the hostess that she cannot control the flies. The issue was not necessarily with the fly, the issue came with her effortless dismissal of a fly in the wine after we had been polite and friendly with her the entire evening. Josephs is a nice place with potential to be better and perhaps the end of the season blues was hitting the waitress however customer service is what guarantees a future with service related businesses and other than the flawless hostess, this place lacks greatly in this department.

I can't write this review fast enough... that is, after I finished vomitting. I had the Pasta Maison. the mussels were diner grade but tasted ok. The shrimp were frozen and not fresh. Ate a couple that tasted off, but thought it might be the ridiculous 80 's parsley and basil sprinkle. as soo as I smelled one that I knew was off, I stopped eating the bland dish entirely. took a shot of Jack in case it was microbial. a trick I learned from being a geijin eating train station sushi in Japan. didn't settle the stomach. first time in josephs and my last. we just moved 3 miles away and thought we'd try it since yelp gave it four stars. 8 minutes after leaving the place we arrived home. I asked my wife which one of our three bathrooms she'd prefer I would vomit in. after see tin was made the games began. the first round draft was relatively brief but relieved me of what Pasta Maison I did eat. ten minutes later came round two which relieved me of my breakfast at the Bad Dog Deli, and the light sensible lunch I ate hours before. I am writing this review not because they served me garbage that made me out violently. I am writing get it because of their reaction. as soon as round one was done, I called them to warn them they may have some bad seafood to keep them from serving it to anyone else, or perhaps killing them. their response? 'This has never happened before'... 'most likely when this happens it is food allergies' the service was crap... sitting at the bar we got to listen the the bartender talk to person after person about golf... while we had empty glasses. just avoid it. my experience won't shut this.place down, but please don't be the person who eats the spoiled mussel or shrimp that causes them to die.

The restaurant is good, we asked for a romantic table and got a ocean view one. It was 4th of July and we were able to get a reservation a day before. The atmosphere is very nice and very comfortable for a nice dinner, but not high-end so you would feel uncomfortable wearing casual dress. Service was good. The food was over average. We had lobster sauté. It was delicious. It is a little more expensive but I would say the price-performance ratio is good.

While vacationing in Maine, we found this restaurant on this site. Much to our satisfaction, we were able to get in without a reservation AND they accommodated our infant daughter as well. In order to keep the ambiance for the rest of the patrons, the hostess graciously set up a table for us in a quieter semi-private room. However it had an excellent veiw of the ocean! The food: Pasta Maison - the pasta was a little overdone for this dish. They used angel hair pasta which doesnt hold up in a dish like ths. However, the concept and flavors were very good Jamaican Salmon - the flavors were straight out of the Caribbean. The salmon was moist and very flavorful Filet Mignon - cooked to PERFECTION! Fork tender and exceptionally seasoned. Best of both Worlds - This is their take on lobster topped filet. 2 center loin cuts - one topped with a claw and the other topped with half a tail. Again the meat was fork tender and had a perfect balanced seasoning to the lobster. The smashed potatoes were also an excellent consistency. Each dish came with a steamed medley of summer veggies. The wine list was short, but they accommodate several different varietals. The prices are a little high for the portions being served, but you're here in Vacationland. A meal like this in Boston or NYC would cost double! We enjoyed our dining experience here and will be returning.

The interior's rear dining room is beautiful w garage style glass doors that open wide to a spectacular view of sea grass, dunes & the Atlantic- beautiful! The breakfast was wholly disappointing. Out of our group of six only two were pleased & they both ordered the fresh berry waffles w fresh strawberry sauce. Out server was young, sweet & pleasant yet not quick & forgot ordered things a few times. Cold flavorless (except for the old oil taste) home fries- server tried again w a new batch which were just the same thing all over again. We were told a new cook was in training. Yikes! Big touristy summer Saterday in August - perhaps NOT the best time to train a new cook?! Salsa had green olives & celery in it- whoa- i didnt get it! Over all it was a poor excuse for breakfast. Perhaps if you stick to pancakes or waffles you may be safe. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Lobster Potato Cake was filled with Lobster Claw Meat the shredded potato mixture that encased the Lobster was undercooked and flavorless. Had the Lobster Sauté with Sea Scallops Roasted Garlic, Angel Hair Pasta needed a little seasoning. Sea Dog Blueberry Ale was tasty. The Butternut Crusted Haddock was a good choice pairs with the Spinach and Arugula Salad. Tossed with Strawberry, roasted Shallots and pistachios with a white balsamic honey dressing.

We had visited this restaurant before for breakfast (the dinners are very expensive), and It was next door to our hotel, so we had breakfast there again. It did not disappoint. I'm not sure if we had an off experience or not, but we were unimpressed. Came very early one evening so we wouldn't disturb other diners since my 18 month old was with us. No one else in the restaurant around 5 or 5:30 (it was late May so not high tourist season yet). The only other diner to come in was seated right next to us which we were hoping to avoid because while my daughter is well behaved, she is only 18 months old. It is not a great place for small children. Nothing on the menu for them and no small cups. But that's not what bothered me at all. I would never expect a nicer restaurant to cater to the young ones...no, what became a huge problem was the food. The Calamari appetizer was good. No complaints there. Dinner is the problem, and mine was terrible. I got lobster in a sherry sauce. First off, my lobster was so overcooked, I couldn't bite through several pieces. It was chewy and overall not good. But that's not the worst of it. The dish came with a sherry sauce. And the sherry sauce was just that. Sherry. No cream, no flavor, just straight up sherry and let me tell you, it was strong and not in an appetizing way. The dish came with this pearl like pasta which could have been good but it soaked up the sherry flavor and was not edible. I tried the lobster first and wasn't impressed but had only gotten a bite in before the waitress came back to check on how things were. I couldn't really give a true answer since I'd only had one bite so I didn't say anything then (I was also trying to feed my daughter so my attention wasn't solely on my food at the moment). She didn't come back for a bit and by the time she did I had decided it was not good. All in all I had about 4 bites of a large plate of food. I tried two bites of lobster, one bite of pasta and one combined bite of both to see if maybe I was wrong. When she returned to take our plates away, I mentioned that my dish was not good. She sort of apologized. You know the 'I'm sorry you didn't like it' apology. She asked what was wrong and I told her the alcohol flavor was overwhelming and not appetizing so she said she'd see if the chef would let her take it off our bill. She returned a few minutes later to say the chef said he wouldn't do anything because I waited until the end of the meal to say something. Seriously!?! She asked why I didn't say anything sooner and I explained that I hadn't really tried it when she stopped by the first time and I wanted to give it a fair shot. She also said that "I did order a dish with a sherry sauce so it will taste like sherry". I realize that and I've had plenty of sherry sauces in my life to know that they can be delicious....this was not one of those. She offered a free dessert but we were ready to go and declined. In the end, I paid over $25 for four bites of a terrible dish. Oh, that's not all, in all fairness we didn't mention this at the restaurant so they didn't have a chance to right this wrong because my dad said his meal was still ok. But he had a surf and turf that was ordered medium rare but cooked to well done. His lobster was also over cooked but he's a very forgiving guy...I usually am too, but I don't think we'll be back even though we live 5 minutes away.

Wonderful meal. I decided to just have appetizers. The Saco Bay soup and then calamari dipped in its broth were great. The lobster potato pancake had a good amount of lobster. My husband had the salmon. He usually does not like mango cream but on the side, he loved it. We are going back tomorrow for breakfast. The waitress was a little slow. The decor was beautiful and we sat by a window overlooking the water. We would definitely recommend this establishment!

We chose this restaurant as our "adult night" dinner place during our family vacation. We were seated on the terrace which was very nice. The view is great! The food was good, but didn't totally knock my socks off. It was a little pricey, $600 for 6 of us (that included two bottles of wine, appetizers and desserts in addition to our entrees). We shared a couple of appetizers and the mozzarella/tomato/salad was really tasty. My sister enjoyed her swordfish also. I ordered "The Best of Both Worlds", beef tenderloin and a lobster tail. The lobster was delicious! The steak was a disappointment. I ordered it medium and it came medium well. I flagged down a passing waitress and let her know it was over cooked and she took it away. A few minutes later, our waitress returned with my original plate and told me it was not over cooked and it's just the lighting that made it appear that way. I was kind astounded that they'd tell a customer that they were incorrect. I hardly ever send food back at a restaurant, but any time I've done it, they've graciously replaced the meal. In this case, I was told they could do it over if I really wanted it, although it was cooked medium according to their standards. I opted for it to be cooked medium rare this time, and we all agreed it came back even more well done. I couldn't send it back again so my brother-in-law ate it. That was a bit of a bummer from a customer service standpoint. The rest of the meal was really good and we enjoyed it. But service could definitely have been better, especially with those prices.

Joseph's was a nice surprise in a land populated by "fish camp" like seafood restaurants who pump several hundred of diners through each meal, and fast food places. Quiet, relaxed, and refined, located just a couple of block from the pier, Joseph's dinning room is nicely decorated and enjoys a spectacular view of the ocean. We stopped in for breakfast and completely enjoyed it. I had a sinful dish ; caramelized stuffed French toast. French toast, stuffed with cream cheese, sliced bananas, and strawberries topped with a Caramel syrup. Wow, it was great. Service was attentive and relaxed. The staff, though young, was on the ball.
