This place is closed now, they auctioned off the remains inside yesterday. I hear they have big plans to gut it and completely remodel and open a new restaurant. It has new ownership.

We went here for lunch one day while vacationing in Greenville. Just as we were seated we watched a group of 7-10 people get up and leave before their food was delivered because the wait was so long. At this point we could hear the wait staff and cooks having a cussing fight on who's fault it was that everything was so slow. Everyone appeared to be frustrated at the wait times. We finished our drinks and went across the street instead of ordering food.

Our family went here for Father's Day and a part of our fall trip, that we do every year, as a family tradition. We are always looking for locally owned places to visit and try out. This place is neat and right on Moosehead Lake and has a beautiful view. The day we went, it was raining so we couldn't sit outside but it didn't matter because of the enclosed glass seating inside. The place was quiet that day and it was fine with us. Oooooh but the menu!!! We loved it!! How could you not want to try this place out with entre names like this: Moose Wings, Chicken Toes, Boom Logs, I'm Not All That Hungry - and thats just the beginning.... maybe you would like Tree Hugger , Misteak on the Lake, the Chicken that didn't make it across the Road, the Moose is Loose....or maybe a burger, like Plain Old Burger, Cheesy Weasel, Skunk Breath, Fungus and the list goes on. But maybe you are a meats and potatoes kind of person, so maybe you would like to try their Looks like Steak, Smells like Steak, Must be Steak dinner!!! And of course, if you order 24 hrs in advance and pay 25% down....Mooseballs ....joking people....or are they??? ;) Either way, if you are in the Moosehead Region of Maine, you have to stop by and check this place out. The service was great, the view was spectacular, the menu is entertaining, the food was amazing and the overall experience was a blast....and not too bad on the wallet. There is something for everyone here. One last thing, if you can't make it by car, no problem, you can come by plane, boat, snowmobile or on a dogsled, your choice!!!

Thanks to Seth, Tanya, & Amanda!! Killer bar!! The poutin was amazing and the views are second to none! Come drink here immediately!

As others have mentioned before; it was below average. We visited Black Frog on recommendation from our tour guide on the Moose Safari. Were pretty hungry and thought we would get a good burger here. I had the Lobster Sandwich and my friends had the special burger. The lobster was ok; but it had no taste. The sandwich felt bland. My friends left behind 3/4 of each of their burgers; and we had to stop at a Mcdonalds to get some real food. The only thing that saves this place from a 1 star is the service which was good. If only we had data service in Greenville; I would have checked yelp before going here.

This was the first place we stopped in for dinner and we arrived just in time to see the amazing lightning show over the lake. Considering they were about to close, we ordered the hamburger and chicken sandwich. While it is hard to mess up such an easy dish, they were both delicious. We shared a house salad and fried mozzarella sticks as well. The hamburger had more of a steak consistency and was so thick we didn't eat the bun and the chicken was added to the salad. Everything we had was great and the staff was entertaining. If you have time, make sure the hostess leaves an extra menu for you! The rules and guidelines listed are hilarious! I appreciate the quick banter and random trivia as you go line by line of what you will experience and what is expected of you. Don't forget to ask your waitress the story about the people caught skinny dipping on the dock! Who knew they'd arrest the guy and not the 2 girls! HA!

This place has fallen apart.. both food and service are terrible.. rumor has it that it will be under new ownership next summer and the new owner has agood reputation. Cross your fingers as the location is fab as can be the barge tiki bar ambiance

This was the perfect place for lunch. We ate on the floating dock with the amazing view. I had the "Moose is Loose" prime rib sandwich with curly fries and it was awesome. My wife had the chicken sandwich that was just as good. The service was prompt and friendly, I would eat here again if in the area!

I stumbled upon this place while doing some hiking in the area. I visited two other places to eat in Greenville, and the Black Frog was far and away the best. I actually look forward to their food - it is consistent, tasty, and not too expensive. The place is decorated with all kinds of unique stuff, the staff was super friendly and accommodating, and they even have free wifi for patrons to use - quite an amenity when you're in the middle of nowhere! I have had the poutine, the chicken fingers, nachos with chili, and the cheeseburger with curly fries here. (Not in one sitting, of course!) They give you large portions of food, and you will not leave this place hungry. My favorite dish was the nachos - sometimes when you order nachos you get more chips than toppings, but here you might need to ask for some extra chips because they give you a large basket loaded with cheese, beans, beef chili, jalapeños, sour cream, and salsa. Really, really good stuff. The burgers are huge and come with a plateful of fries. Eat here, it is worth it!

I had the skinny dip and it was delicious. Tender and full of flavor. My fiance had a pastrami and thought it was great. Service was top notch. Very laid back and enjoyable.

7/09/12 There's not much to choose from in Greenville, ME; being that it's in the middle of nowhere there's still 3-4 restaurants to eat at in the main town. My boyfriend and I were coming back from Rockwood, ME and stopped in Greenville for lunch. We walked in and was greeted by the owner/manager and I asked if we could be seated out on the barge. He said "I'll be right behind you guys with your menus" , we walked out the door and sat down with no menus. I watched the owner sit down at another table with some friends and proceed to drink some wine (at noon, I don't judge) but I was thinking "oh he told a waitress we're here." We pretty much sat there among 2 other tables that were eating and waiting 10min+ without being acknowledged by any of the wait staff or the bar tender in his little shanty. We were pretty much being ignored. We walked out. Don't ever go here. However, do go down the street to The StressFree Moose (haha) and we were helped immediately (greeted by a hostess, then the bartender who served us and a guy outside grilling burgers) and we were eating our lobster-rolls in 15min.

The food was very good. Our waitress however was very rude. Every table had he same issue.

In a town this small, there aren't many options. The wait staff at the Black Frog were all very nice, and they had an ok selection of beer. The food was decent enough, but nothing to write home about.

Cute little place with old time photographs of the town for decor which we found interesting. Outdoor seating is on a dock where 3 mallards swim hopefully past, quacking for french fries. Our food was ok... Standard pub fare, unremarkable, but service was on the ball and we were happy with the experience. Would return.

Long story short... Greenville is very, very limited in choices and kitchens close early (Black Frog closes at 8:30) so plan accordingly. This particular restaurant fared better than average for small town grub, much better for view, and average for price. The ribs were excellent!! Very moist and meaty with tasty sauce. The mashed potatoes were perhaps the best Ive had in months and the slaw very, very good. For dessert, the carrot cake slice was HUGE and very, very flavorful. Another good dish was the pot roast sandwich (with horseradish sauce) and melted cheese on top... add curly fries on the side and you have a very filling meal. Sitting on Moosehead lake we felt it fitting to have Moosehead beer as well.. which much to our surprise was reasonably priced (under $4). This is worth a stop if you are in the area.

I was terribly disappointed with this place. It was dank and dirty feeling... even knowing that Greenville, Maine is not the cuisine capital of the world, I still expected a step higher. I made a horrible mistake of ordering the lobster roll. The lobster meat HAD to have been thawed-- there is NO WAY this was fresh lobster. It was not seasoned in the slightest. It was laid on bed of wilted lettuce. The bread was hard and tasted a bit stale. The onion rings were ok. My friend had a chicken sandwich that she didn't hate, let's say. The only thing I did like was it was on the water.

In a town that relies on tourists, the host staff acts as if customers are a pain. we were treated to an unfriendly and rude host who ignored us. Avoid this place and go across the street to Flatlanders or the Rod and Reel. The many negative reviews are an accurate reflection of the quality of the black frog.

How dare they call their sandwich a "Lobster Roll"........... Stale bread. Soggy, tasteless lobster meat. Inedible. And the service?? Would you not ask how the food was if you had a customer that didnt eat their meal? Apparently this place just doesnt care.

We almost didn't go due to some other reviews but we're glad we did! Saturday lunch was busy, the service was good, the ambience was funny & quirky, and the food itself ranged from pretty good pulled pork to great fried fish. Perfect place to grab lunch on the way through town.

It has been a while since we went, but I remember the food being decent but slightly over-priced. You have to expect that in the area it is in, though. The smoked trout was DELICIOUS as was their version of poutine (and I recall my chicken sandwich being quite good). Had a wonderful laugh at their menu. That is awesome. Of course, you can't beat the view. We sat out on the dock and the four of us had a great lunch together. Would go back next time we make it up that way.

This was my third time eating at the Black Frog. The only thing this place has going for it is it's location, located at the south point of Moosehead Lake. For being one of the bigger (if not the biggest) restaurant in "downtown" Greenville, you'd think they'd get their stuff together. Service and food quality clearly have gone down the drain. How is the owner of the place allowed to sit outside, have a cigarette (in plain sight of the customers) and then come back inside and continue to server plates out of the kitchen? Disgusting. I've been there three times since 2004. The menu is exactly the same. This place should be on Chef Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, really soon.

Lovely setting on Moosehead Lake and we kayaked over but service extremely slow (and not busy at the time.). Food very pricey for quality. Lobster Roll and fish and chips lacked flavor. The tiny ice cream parlor Dairy Bar across the street had better food for WAY less money.

Food here was OK but nothing fantastic. The menu was fun to read and view was spectacular but all in all just an average place to eat in a locale that doesn't offer much for variety.

We were here in early October (before Columbus Day weekend) for the fall foliage around Moosehead lake. Let's just say, dining options are severely limited in this part of Maine. It's small town USA, there's almost no traffic lights around, and only one or two gas stations in the area. Not a knock on the area at all, it's a typical tiny New England town. Very quaint and quiet. There's only 4 restaurants in town and all located on Pritham Ave. 2 of the 4 are your typical sports bar/pub styled restaurant and 1 is a wanna-be 'fancy' dining establishment, not fancy as in suit and jacket type, but fancy as in not a sports bar. Then, there's the Black Frog. A hybrid between sports bar/pub and the 'fancy' (again loose use of the word 'fancy'). We ended up having a late lunch and dinner there one day. For the late lunch (~2pm after driving up from Bar Harbor), we had a medium-done 'plain ole burger' with fries and a cup of french onion soup. Neither were anything special, very typical. Burger was about normal sized for a bar and quite juicy, but their fries were overdone and dry. Soup was just fine, again, nothing special. Dinner consisted of the chilli soup and teriyaki steak tips over rice. Again, soup was so-so, nothing to write home about. The steak tips were way too salty and again overdone to the point of being way too tough to chew. The rice was a joke. It was probably a packet of microwaved Uncle Ben's rice made with way too much water. Oh well, what can you really expect. In any case, both meals came to about $20, which is fine considering there really was no other dining options (all 4 places in Greenville serve the same fares), but at least this one had a great view of the lake.

The only thing good about this place is the view. Situated right on Moosehead Lake, it's worth the dreadful food. Yes, dreadful. How can you screw up a turkey club sandwich and fries. 1) Start with Wonder Bread, 2) under cook the bacon so it's a flaccid greasy mess, 3) use packaged sandwich turkey instead of the real thing, then add lettuce, tomato and mayo which were the only acceptable parts of the sandwich. The fries were soggy and greasy and had no flavor or salt. I've been here several times only because there aren't many other choices in the area. The food is consistently bad. My other peeve with this place is the service. We were waited on by a man who acted like he didn't want to be there and didn't want us to be there either. He barked out the specials and slapped the food onto the table with reckless abandon without once cracking a smile or coming to see if everything was OK. The thing I've noticed about Northern Maine service (and yes, I'm from Northern Maine) is that the servers take your order and throw food on the table like pig slop because "it's their job." They don't begin to consider atmosphere, friendliness, courtesy or the general dining experience, which in my opinion are also part of doing their job. Don't get me wrong...that part is not lost on all servers in the area, but it was definitely absent with the guy who tossed us our food. Sadly, I'll probably come back here out of hunger, desperation and for the great view.

Meh... The view was really nice, but beyond that it was just like the other places in town in terms of pub style food. They try to be quirky with oddities like Mooseballs on the menu, but when you come down to the real items on the menu it is the same pub grub stuff. I had a Burger, ordered Medium served Well done, but honestly I was just happy to eat something. I also had the Chicken Fingers (ooo, excuse me, Chicken Toes, heeheee) which were pretty standard as well.

Greenville is the gateway to Maine's massive Moosehead lake, a lake that, according to the menu at the Black Frog, is the second largest lake contained in a single state. Unlike gateway towns in the Midwest, Greenville is isolated and has a limited commercial district. There is an ice cream place, a gift shop selling fudge, and a few knick-knack shops. There are a number of pubs offering fish and bar food and there's even a local inn offering slightly more upscale grub. For food with a view, however, the Black Frog may beat 'em all. The restaurant is divided between an indoor portion and an outdoor portion, which is a floating barge. Less than a barge, however, it resembles and oversized raft, lashed to the rest of a restaurant with a few sturdy ropes and connected by a very stable foot bridge. The atmosphere is Maine via the Florida Keys - there's a bar in the middle of the barge blasting out bud light on tap and innocuous, albeit unrecognizable, tunes on a small stereo. Summer residents and locals can tie up their boats next to the barge and enjoy a lunch with a view of the mountains and their watercraft. Food is a mixed bag. There's just about everything on the menu, from burgers to fish to pizza and anything you could possibly want fried. We loved the smoked local trout. Pizza, which they'll prepare with anything they have lying around the kitchen (just ask) was only so-so. I was in a pizza mood after a 4 hour hike so against better judgment I opted for a mushroom and garlic pizza. After trying pizza at a few places in Maine, I've come to realize they like their sauce a little sweeter than I do. The lobster roll was fresh, but the mayo was a little heavy and a little sweet. Service was pleasant and prompt. Would I go back if I were in Greenville again? Absolutely. I loved dining on the barge and looking out over the mountains and the lake. Would I go out of my way to go here? No.

The pluses are the view and service - both were great. The food was average - nothing memorable. But all in all worth it.

I came for the view and drinks since we had finished lunch at about 4:30pm. We tried the lobster chowder. It was small but chock full of potatoes with a few chunks of lobster dropped in. Not bad. ... but we did end up going to the diary bar across the street for ice cream and couldn't help ordering up the lobster roll that was $5.50. That was a good roll, and the price made it even better.

I agree with all the other Yelpers here. Mostly decent food, passable service, GREAT view/location. We actually happened to head here on an overcast, rainy & chilly September day, so unfortunately the outdoor eating was a no-go. The Menu is pretty funny, especially the "top 10 answers to frequently asked questions" on the back, with one simply saying "no". I'm a fan of good humor. The food was standard pub style -- 2 people had burgers, and were happy with them, my brother got the "Mi-Steak on the Lake" steak sandwhich, which he enjoyed, and I got the Lobster Roll. I actually really enjoyed the Lobster Roll. Reasonably priced, packed with fresh lobster, and it actually was light on the mayo, which I was pleased with. So many New ENglad seafood places just DRENCH the Lobster Roll with mayo and it kills the flavor. The waitress was...ok. Halfway through the meal, it started to pour outside, and apparently the roof has a couple of leaks here and there - well, the waitstaff kind of forgot about us for a little bit there (I guess because buckets catching the water needed to be observed? I don't know) The place has some defininte local charm, and that outdoor seating looks like it's a GREAT place to be in better weather. I'd try again if we were heading this way again.

My wife and I ate dinner here on August 17. We ate on the float behind the restaurant because we had our dog with us. We had scallops wraped in bacon, steak tips and fish and chips. Everything was good, casual comfort food, just what we were after. The setting, however, is remarkable. We looked out over the lake and enjoyed a magnificent sunset and view. The only issue was service. Things are busy in August, so service was on the slow side, but friendly.

short story: $7 bottled beer and mediocre food, but a funny menu Long story: well my friends and i read the reviews on here before we tried it, and seeing that everyone else wrote mediocre reviews we weren't really expecting much. thank god because if we were, we would have been really disappointed!!! we decided to go her regardless because of the lake-front seating, which is the only great thing about this place. the food was "meh" (which is conveniently also the caption on my 2-star rating) BUT the smoked trout appetizer was DELICIOUS. my friend ordered the canadian fries (cheese with gravy) which was decent but underwhelming (cheese friends and gravy can never be awful unless its velveeta). 2 of our party had the "chish and fips" (fish and chips) which were nothing special, i tried the crab sandwich which was ok, but the only cheeses they offer are american and swiss. american is godawful and i avoid it at all costs, and swiss and crab just doesnt sound like a good combination to me. i got it with american anyway. the other girl in our party had the grilled chicken sandwich which looked OK... the part that REALLY pissed me off is they only had 2 beers that were of any interest to me.. moosehead lager (which ironically is brewed in canada, not anywhere near moosehead lake where we were) and grittys best brown. both decent beers (but i personally hate malty beers). here comes the problem: no where on the menu did it say the price. we didn't even think of it, because prices are usually pretty cheap in maine in generally. 6 beers and lunch later, we get the bill and the bottles of beer are $7 each!!! if you are going to charge more than the price of a 6 pack for a bottled beer thats brewed fairly regionally, you need to at least mention the price somewhere on the beer list. that really infuriated us. we live in boston and CT (2 couples, relocated) and even in our city and wealthy suburbs that price for a beer is absurd. one plus side, though, was that the menu was hilarious. maybe that was to distract you from the mediocre food being served? one option was moose testicles, for the price of $1,500. seeing the humor on the rest of the menu, we jokingly asked the waitress about them and she got offended! very defensively she told us they are actually very popular, actually cost $1,500. as i said, considering how humorous the rest of the menu is (they even offer a $25 cocktail cruise with cash bar and..skinny dipping? see also: above mention of chish and fips, they also offer steak tits (ie tips) etc). my friends are i were very put off by the waitresses response to our inquiry about the dish. next time i go back to greenville, i will find another restaurant with lakeside dining that at least charges a reasonable price for their beer!
