Flatlander's has great "Broasted" chicken, Sandwiches, Burgers and all the other typical pub far you'd expect. I'm not writing this review because of any of that, I'm writing this review based on the chowda'! It's not overly thick, you can't stand up a spoon in it. It's the same thin broth style chowda' my Grandmother used to make. So flavorful, so tasty, I don't care if its the Haddock, Clam, Scallop, or Seafood every chowda I've had here has been fantastic. I've told the cook many times how it's been the 2nd best chowda' I've ever had, 2nd only to my Grandmothers. FYI, I grew up in Gloucester MA, my Grandmother was cook, and she took the chowda' very seriously! My Fiancee's family has a summer camp in the area and we find ourselves in Grenville at least a half a dozen times a year. I've been seriously slacking in not writing this review sooner. The Service has been good, the place is clean, the food is good, the Chowda' is fantastic!

I will say the one good thing here was the food was descent. The service was awful... I waited way too long after I placed my order to get my food, the waitress was more interested in talking to her friend at the bar then doing her job. My 3piece order of chicken came out with only 2 pieces for some unknown reason but I did hear the cook and waitress argue but who "forgot" to put it on the plate. Will never go back especially because I hate being treated like a "tourist" while the "locals" are properly taken care of.

We were looking forward to trying this place - as my guy is all about chicken and it seemed like a local favorite. Well, he was very disappointed. The quality of the meat and the size/portion of the chicken were lame. We overheard the table next to us complaining about the same thing. I got the spaghetti dinner - thinking nobody could screw up pasta, but I was wrong. It was overcooked, nasty, and I am not even sure what the red sauce was - it had a weird tangy flavor. The rinky dink "garlic bread" was half OF A HALF of a hotdog roll and didn't seem garlicky at all. The house salad, although generic with iceberg lettuce, was the most edible part of the dinner and wasn't too bad. We realize we are used to eating in Boston and shouldn't expect much out in the middle of Maine, but come on...this place is not at all what it's cracked up to be. Save your $ and go to Kelly's Landing down in Greenville Junction - so much better! UPDATE: I originally gave this place one star, because of the food. But the waitress we had was very nice ...and if i must confess, guilt has gotten the better of me. Flatlanders has been a Greenville staple for decades...and I guess a local joint like this adds to the charm of a small community in the wilderness, even if the food isn't great. (I am tempted to keep adding stars, so am going to stop here. Sigh. I'm a sucker for nostalgia).

We had limited options for lunch on a Monday when we were in town for a "Moose Safari", and this place had a good range of items on the menu and decent service. We didn't try the broasted chicken, but were happy enough with the seafood, fries, and onion rings we had.

Fried shrimp delicious coleslaw needs work for flavor along with cut fries. Ribs were fatty barely any meat and came no where close to the hefty $18 charge. Turkey club looked good til you saw pressed turkey meat, which is always a no no. Mom and pop atmosphere which I loved and owners friendly we could hear even though didn't conversate with. Seemed like they put care into some meals while not the while menu.

Lunch time! Wasn't sure where to go, but we ended up at Flatlanders. The seating is really awkward. The menu was pretty good, and they are supposedly well known for their broasted chicken, which is clearly what we got. A whole chicken which was enough for two of us for lunch and supper for $16. Not bad! It doesn't come with sides though unless you order the dinner. The chicken was sooo crunchy and very nicely cooked, but be aware, it takes a while for it to be cooked so order this for an appetizer: Fried veggie platter. Pick three fried vegetables and the platter was huge. We got the onion rings which were so crunchy and delicious, broccoli bites and caulifower with some dipping sauces. This could have easily been the meal on its own, but was a great start. In the end, I'd come back for more chicken and veggies, it was pretty good!

Have the broasted chicken and a cold draft beer. What could be better. On last trip, KC ordered lobster cassarole and loved it! We have a place on Moosehead Lake so we visit Greenville several times a year. This is always a most stop. Owner operated and they take closing time seriously.

Grabbed the famous 'Broasted Chicken' for takeout one night. The chicken isn't really anything to write home about. It was just a really crispy fried chicken. The mashed potatoes & gravy and cole slaw were ok, but the could have used a little salt and pepper. The portions are large, but I would prefer less food with better flavor. The restaurant is small and pretty cramped, so I got my food to go. Unfortunately, they didn't include utensils or salt and pepper with my order.

Great service, but I'm going to be totally honest here. Their fried chicken has nothing on Royal Farms. Or even KFC. And it's definitely NOT healthier. It definitely isn't tastier (on the bland side). The gravy fries were...interesting. Be careful when you ask for them, as they come loaded with cheap cheddar cheese. It just wasn't what I was looking/hoping for, although it suits the area well.

Greenville is a tiny town but you can smell Flatlanders broasted chicken a block away! Broasted is a different way of cooking chicken. They roast it first and fry it to seal in the flavor while keeping it moist and let me tell you, after our 2nd day in town and crawling in daily for lunch, I can see why this place is so popular. Their salads and sandwiches are also very good. We tried the lobster roll which was seasoned perfectly with thick chunks of lobster on a buttered roll. Even their burgers and house salads are tasty but I couldn't pass up the chicken! I've never had anything like it. In a town where everyone knows everyone by name, the week we were in town, we were considered locals at Flatlanders.

Very delicious broasted chicken! We didn't think we could eat everything but we did because it was so light, crispy and not greasy at all. Cole slaw and mashed potatoes were tasty as well and at less than $12/plate, very reasonable. Friendly service, too. We would definitely return.

When I read the previous reviews I decided we had to give it a try. OMG what a wonderful place to hang out and have a great lunch. The fried chicken dinner with a few beers made for a five star experience and the award for the best fried chicken in the US. Bravo!!'

I had high hopes for this place based on previous reviews. I would recommend this restaurant for lunch but not for dinner. The fried chicken is heavily battered which I like, but my chicken wasn't cooked all the way through and it lacked flavor. I believe I came in close to closing time (8pm on a Sunday) and it seemed as though the waitress was trying to steer me away from the fried chicken because it takes 20 minutes to prepare but they also advertise it as being amazing so I wanted me chicken! Apparently they were really in a hurry because we got our food quickly but it wasn't cooked all the way through. The bf got a steak cooked medium which doesn't take long but the steak was bland and underwhelming as well. The pros: cute and cozy atmosphere. Maybe not the cleanest looking, but definitely cozy for cold, snowy nights. Other people we met in town raved about their lobster rolls. There are a lot of locals here which is always a good sign, however the wait staff does cater to the locals, so if you are a tourist...well...just make sure you get there early and don't require refills!

Fabulous and outstanding service. We were a little late in getting to our camp and needed to find somewhere to eat. Flatlanders surpassed our expectations since their food, beer and service was inviting and the entire staff stayed a bit beyond closing to let us enjoy our meal comfortably and without pressure to 'hurry up' and leave. We will return!

Very disappointed with Flatlanders. To be honest, we drove 2 1/2 hours on our motorcycles looking to hit up another place that was closed. We had been to Flatlanders before & thought it was good, so recommended it to the crowd. How very disappointing. I never order chicken when dining out, but thought some hand-breaded/battered chicken tenders would be yummy. What I got was frozen chicken that I could buy at any grocery store & prepare myself or stop at a convenience store & pick up for much less money. The fries were home-made, but very soggy. The roll was cold. Coleslaw required mixing, so I knew it wasn't fresh. $9.99 for 3 chicken tenders and some soggy fries? Was not impressed & sad to say that I don't think I'd go back. It was our best ride of the season, but the worst meal we've had....

We so wanted to love, or like, Flatlanders. It seems to be popular with local folks as well as with visitors to Moosehead Lake. We arrived around 7pm on a summer weekday eve after reading glowing reviews of the broasted chicken, etc. While it was not exceptionally busy, we stood at the entryway of the restaurant for five minutes before being noticed, and then were seated. We then watched as two parties seated after us were offered menus and served before us. This was particularly galling as a waitress had joked about us "sneaking in" after we were seated by another one. "Garden salad" consisted of iceburg lettuce and did not appear to have originated from a garden. The broasted chicken breast was dry, with minimal meat. We did appreciate the huge servings of white wine, however.

Not the best meal we've had in Greenville this trip. Steak and salmon were good but a little seasoning would have gone a long way. They seemed to be proud of their lumpy mashed potatoes which could have used salt, pepper, and butter. Steak was cooked perfectly, service was fast but not personal at all. The atmosphere in a word.....loud...we didn't talk to each other because we weren't into shouting at each other. I heard the waitress tell someone that it's always like this on Friday nights.

Probably the best place we found to eat in Greenville while up here on vacation. But still didnt blow me away. Service was good, food was pretty good. The Broasted Chicken was basically fried chicken that wasnt dried out like some other places. It was relatively cheap and a huge portion (I had the 3piece dinner). I didnt see a huge selection of beers beyond the typical Bud/Budlight/Miller/Coors/etc. Sam Adams and Shipyard were the most unique choices I was offered.

The only regret is that I didn't get to stop here a second time. The place doesn't look like much on the outside and is tiny on the inside but good service and great comfort food. My wife ordered a so-so shrimp scampi, but the real treat is the broasted chicken, recommend with mashed potato and gravy. VERY tasty and big portions. Good selection of beers too...would definitely go again.
