Simply the best outdoor seafood dining. I enjoy the Jenny Special, a haddock sandwich topped w/ a crab cake. The tartar sauce is very good. Not quite on topic but the public address system to announce when your food order is ready for pickup is also a purely Maine experience.

An experience in and of itself. The setting is beautiful, even if it is just picnic tables on a dock. Lobsters are cheap and delicious, and there are lots of other things to order (the salmon sandwich looked great). Bring your own tablecloth, appetizers, and wine/beer. The folks yelling the order numbers gets a little tiresome, but that's a minor issue. The ice cream afterwards was also a treat, and cheap to boot. The Yellow Brick Road is yummy.

This place is as good as it gets for lobster. Sweet meat and the prices aren't horrible. Although some local people are complaining, as a New Englander, it gets a lot worse than what they're charging at Five Islands. It's the authentic Maine lobster shack experience you're paying for. Go down to Kennebunk and they're charging three times what Five Islands is at lobster shacks there. Go to any downtown Portland restaurant and forget it. This place is the real deal. It's our annual trip. The view is unbeatable, as well.

Michael Stern, who wrote 500 Places to Eat Before Its Too Late said that if he could visit only 1 restaurant in all of New England, this would be the place. After trying dozens of great restaurants and food stops, I can say he made a great choice. Its a haul to get there (isnt everyplace wonderful hard to get to though?) and its not even exactly a 'restaurant'. Five Island Lobster Company is a shack located on a dock where they serve lobster dinners as well as fried clams, fried scallops, shrimps, and various other delicious fresh seafood treats. There are picnic tables everywhere, and you place your order and wait for your number to be called. First off, this is my favorite way to eat lobster. Outside, casually dressed, at a picnic table, NOT indoors at a tablecloth and candlelit table with formal silver. Second, the food is exceptional. I dont even need to say more than that about it. Delicious lobster cooked right on the docks as the boat pulls in, simple sides like corn and coleslaw and potatos. As if that isnt enough, that dock, and those picnic tables are located in the middle of a postcard. One of the most beautiful scenes you could ever imagine. Picture sun shining on kids diving off the end of a pier while boats dock with the daily catch. Meanwhile 5 unspoiled and perfectly green islands provide the perfect contrast to the deep blue ocean waters. Its like you walked into a movie set. Places like 5 Islands make me realize that there are still places worth traveling to...places that can give you a local experience that you cannot get back home...and even better, places that have not turned into some disneyland tourist trap swarming with crazy people who spoil the experience.

This is a high-priced (read overpriced) and minimal seafood restaurant on a dock. The seafood is very fresh and high-quality, but there's not really much to the food besides the seafood. White-bread buns, some mediocre cole slaw, and greasy fries or onion rings. What do you get here for your money? Very fresh seafood and a nice view--do not expect anything else. The lobster rolls are very good here. The atmosphere is nice...beautiful view, picnic tables on the dock overlooking rocky shores and lobster boats...a cool breeze off the water. But sometimes too cool...even in the hottest part of summer, the dock usually gets very cold at night, so if you're going to eat dinner here, make it an early dinner; lunch is much more pleasant. Irritatingly, when the price of lobster dropped from well over $10/pound to well under $5/pound, the prices of the lobster rolls here did not move accordingly, which is dishonest if you ask me, and made my opinion of this place drop precipitously.

its so hard to rank lobster rolls in maine, but this little place is out of the way, has some of the best views anywhere and of course amazing food. Lobster roll is of the type with mayo mixed in, but not very much at all. Lots of tail meat in these ones, not just claw. Miranda Had eaten too many lobsters by the time we arrived here, so I can also say that their chicken fingers and french fries are good as well. But you should get the lobster roll.

A basket of fried clams here is my favorite meal of all time! This has been a summer pilgrimage of mine for going on two decades now. I never got the full story but apparently some local politics caused some kind of split a few years back (probably a lot longer ago than I'm remembering) and now there is another pier nearby that has the more local feel (and prices) I remember from when I was a kid. Its a little hard to find and not as pretty but I try to patronize them as well (like I could have too many fried clams... HERESY!). I probably wouldn't come here anymore to buy anything "market" style as it definitely seems like its turned into more of a tourist destination than anything else. But this place will always be the quintessential seafood stop in my mind and memories. It also doesn't hurt that a scoop of butter brickle ice cream can still be gotten to top everything off :-)

Have never had a bad meal down at 5 Islands. This summer I ate there three times, and I found their portions and pricing to be right on par with all the other waterside restaurants in the area. My favorite thing I had this summer was a huge bowl of delicious fish chowder for $5.95. With a soda, and the chowder, I ended up with a dinner for under $8, and with the most beautiful view in the world. How ya gonna beat that?

I love this place! Make sure you go here on a nice sunny day and hang out enjoying the view while stuffing yourself with some top shelf lobster!

  • Melinda D.

Five Islands Lobster Co has changed management and it's showing. Portion sizes are down, and prices are up. The Jenny Special is still excellent, and the fish as fresh as it gets. There's no longer any tomato (I swore there used to be), and the fries are clearly frozen and lacking. You can cut portions, but not raise prices too. Waits are incredibly long even though it's much less busy than in the best years. Nice people, but taking advantage of the tourists. My guess is because there is no competition in the Gotts Cove this year.

This is going to sound really weird. But, I've never actually had any seafood here. Whenever I go here (about 3-4 times a year), I get the double cheeseburger. It is, hands down, the best cheeseburger I have ever had, and it's consistent every time. This burger is better than any chain, pub or diner burger. Trust me on this. It's a knockout. The five stars I give this place is based on it's amazing views, great staff and fresh food.

  • Nat S.

I must have crossed paths with Melinda D. today. The weather was perfect for being down at the town landing. I took my mother here for Mother's Day, she too is a lobster roll fiend. Five Islands gets a lot of hype and is in the pantheon of most lobster lovers. With regard to their roll, as my wife would say, "My socks are still on." I wasn't that moved by the roll. It had lettuce, the bun wasn't grilled very well and they were a little skimpy on the lobster salad. Mayo ratio was fine, but the meat wasn't that sweet. They didn't split the bun open much and placed the salad in a narrow row with some height. It look to be filled much more than it really was. The pieces were a little on the smaller side- see photos. You really can't beat the location and I would have happily paid 10 bucks for a PBJ down there. I'll go again with friends that want the full package: cove-side dining, lobster boats..... It is off the beaten path too, so visitors think it is really special. On that note it is was a little pricey for being so far removed. $15.95 for a not so full roll. I know that I can get a larger, tastier roll at 3 different places in Brunswick and not break fourteen bucks. The lobster dinner with corn, boiled potatoes and a chicken lobster was $15 which seemed like a good value compared to some others I've seen. The crab roll was great, except served on a grilled hamburger bun. The onion rings were outstanding. If you want photo perfect scenery or want a special place to BYOB a few Narragansetts with your New York friends you must go to Five Islands. If you are looking for the perfect roll and could care less if it was served in a dirty parking lot in Lewiston, then head elsewhere. They take credit cards and have a little ice cream stand across the wharf that sells Annabelle's. The ice cream place takes cash only. Take a windbreaker.

Just awesome. Great views, awesome lobster, decent prices. Everything has already been said, and its no exaggeration. Worth the extra travel time from wherever you are, you won't regret it.

The quintessential Maine seafood experience. Steamers are their speciality, and they are tremendous. Great chowder too. Beautiful waterfront setting

Absolutely loved this place! Even the drive there was great. Very rustic little place with only a handful of picnic tables and a beautiful view of the water. They were out of large lobsters when we went, but what we got was sweet juicy & delicious. It was also cheaper than all the other lobster pounds. My husband said his lobster roll was one of the best he had ever eaten...believe me he's had a lot! Make sure you stop and get some Annabelle's All Natural ice cream after you eat. Delish!!!

My God the View is Beautiful, the Lobster is just right i can just sit here forever, but beware at night times you will get some bugs bite so bring insect repellen

  • Sarah W.

Great fried food plus a spectacular view. Perhaps a little pricy, but exactly what you would expect for a summer place. A plentiful portion of Fried Shrimp and fries + a Stewarts Cream Soda = one very happy me. Any person visiting Maine should make an effort to make a stop here.

  • Mary C.

Two stars for the lobster roll, four for the view, split the difference. They were out of all but 1.25 lb lobsters, so we got the lobster rolls, with a side of onion rings and slaw. The lobster was superb, but the quantity was really meager -- maybe the equivalent of half of one of their standard lobster sizes in terms of meat. Onion rings were overcooked and tasteless. Expected more, oh well...

  • SeaChi N.

Right on the water, this place is Maine. Don't expect 5 star facilities but you will get 5 star fresh food.. pick your lobster from the tank, 20 minutes later, someone screams your code word and you get incredible fresh lobster, sitting under the sun, right next to the water, with the sounds of the sea. Have a beer and it doesnt' get any better than this.

  • Matt N.

This is an amazing place to get super fresh lobster in a low-key casual atmosphere. I went to Five Islands Lobster Company a few weeks ago with a few friends on a day trip from Boston. They let us hold and take pictures with our lobsters before they cooked them and we ate them. And the price was so right - $25 for a lobster almost 2 lbs., corn on the cob, and baked potatoes. We brought our own beer and sat on the picnic tables outside with a beautiful view of the harbor while we ate our scrumptious lobsters.

  • Marc A.

One of the best places for seafood in the region. Fresh lobster right off the dock and everything prepared well. Fried food thin layer of crust, so it isn't deep fried. Keep in mind this isn't a restaurant - you're eating at picnic tables out on a dock. It can be extremely hot given most of the tables do not have shade, but there are a few under a shades overhang. Lobster rolls excellent, as are the fried haddock and scallops If you're coming by boat, there is a small dock to tie up on, but can get crowded at lunch time and tough to find a spot.

  • D. S.

Eat outside only, not open in bad weather or winter. Bring your camera, a sweatshirt, maybe some insect repellent if it isn't breezy. My daughter used to work there and the staff invented the Jenny one of those summers she was there. Take the lettuce out of the lobster roll and you will enjoy it more. The haddock basket is great, as is the salmon basket...even better than the lobster roll! Onion rings are a must have here. Choose your own lobster for a boiled lobster dinner in the building closer to the water. Listen for your number to be called when your food is ready!!!! Leave room for an Annabelle's ice cream! Please don't feed the seagulls. It's fun, but like with bears, they get very bold and you could lose your meal! Watch the lobstermen on this working community dock. Bathrooms are portapotties, so go before you go!!! You may byob, none is sold there.

Fact- lobster is just not good south of Boston. And not as good as when it is caught fresh off the side of the pier. This is one of those places, you see the lobster boats come to the side of the restaurant and deliver. I've been coming here every summer for 28 years now and the lobster is cooked to perfection. Once even treated myself to a 3lber. Life was good. The fish sandwiches are also good. It has gotten expensive over the years, sadly. Lobster in Maine is not quite the deal it once was and the tourists now swarm five islands so the prices get driven up. It used to be crazy cheap. Oh well.

  • Ian L.

By far, THE best place to get authentic Maine lobster!! I recommend this to anyone visiting Maine. The food here is fantastic, prices are cheap, and the view of the water is very "Maine." The only thing that I dislike about this place is the parking situation. Last we were here, we ended up waiting about 10 minutes for a spot to open up. That being said, the wait for food wasn't very long! Do yourself a favor, and make a side trip down here the next time you're in the area!

Great setting out on a wharf overlooking one of the many beautiful bays in this part of Maine. BYOB and enjoy a beautiful afternoon eating some of the best seafood around. I had the fried oysters and they were awesome the breading was crisp and light. I upgraded to onion rings. Worth the extra money. Our companions got fried clams and loved them as well. You can also order steamed whole lobsters and make a meal of those or buy them live and take them home to steam yourself. Overall worth the drive especially on a sunny day.

  • Adam P.

Fresh beyond belief! If you're in southern Maine you have to make the drive to this place and taste the freshest lobster you'll ever have in your life. Bring your appetite and eating clothes that you don't mind getting a bit dirty, this place is all about the food. When you arrive on the dock enter into the door labeled "Lobster" and place your order with one of the friendly staff. I got the soft shell and didn't even use the nutcracker since the shell truly was soft. Not much else to say. Like I said, it's all about the purity of food here and freshness from the sea and earth. Back to basics, awesome!

  • Matt C.

Always fresh lobster rolls ... Just a hint of mayo and smidge of lettuce. And you can't ask for a more picturesque location. Nothing like 5 Islands where is you are there at the right time you can see the lobsters coming right off the boat and into the steamer ... nothing fresher! Only open in the summer .... sunset is perfect time.

Made the trek up (finally) after reading and hearing a lot of the hype and press this has been getting. I agree with what most are saying about the view and most of the food; doesn't get much fresher. I also agree with the person that wrote to bring bug spray and something like a light jacket or sweatshirt. Temperature dropped almost instantly on what was a perfect summer afternoon and the fog rolled in..pretty typical, but caught us a bit offguard. The food was real good, but seemed to have a 'nickel and dime' feel when we asked for a little extra side of something here and there..the view, while it lasted was great..think small fishing island harbor. My only complaint (and think it's major for something claiming to be seafood at it's best, etc etc) was the clam chowder. Do yourself a favor and skip it completely..it was cool enough, where we said 'what the hell'..lets get some to go..maybe eat on the way back to NH or warm up later. They only have one size and expensive..whatever..packed it away for the trek home. Little did we know it was either unthickened milk or half and half with a few of the things that you find in authentic clam chowder (and very little I might add) with a linger scent of something spoiled. Who doesn't thicken their chowder? that's what gives it the comfort food effect that New England clam chowder is world famous for. This was watery and gross. No bacon smoke note or seasoning. Nothing. Took one bite and threw it away. Shame on these people for putting this one the menu. If this is really how they make it everyday. This was my first time there. Anyways..we'll be making the trek back, a bit more prepared and with beers and wine in tote, but at least we know what and what not order now. Make a decent chowder and it's 5 stars across the board

  • David T.

The bottom line: The best Maine lobster (and other delicious seafood) as well as unbeatable atmosphere. The deep, cold waters around the five islands create the sweetest and most delicious lobster. The fried clams and oysters are also tremendously fresh and tasty. (I'd opt away from the corn and other useless fillers when there's so much deliciousness to be had.) Sitting on a dock, overlooking the sea-swaying boats and the five islands, the atmosphere also can't be beat. But don't forget a sweatshirt and some bugspray (this is Maine people!).

As good as lobster gets right at a shack at waters edge in Maine. Rustic and hard to get to...seemed like forever winding down the road and it was worth it!

Tourist trap...Check. Overpriced Lobster Roll...Check. Haddock Sandwich...Check. Fried (everything) seafood...Check. Amazing views...Check. Double Check. Yeah I'll be back...do yourself one favor tho...don't order the burger. It's horrible! Literally McD's is better. Its really bad! It's all kids working there, so the food is only going to be marginal at best. Stick to the lobster and the grilled haddock and you'll be fine.

My boyfriend and I found Five Islands on a whim. I was really in the mood for some seafood over Memorial Day weekend, and I am pleased to say that I was VERY pleased! My boyfriend's father and I both ordered the regular lobster roll (priced at $15.95 which isn't terrible), his mother ordered the Fish 'n Chips, and Jared had the Fried Scallop basket with Onion Rings. The lobster roll was delicious. Very lightly dressed in mayo (which I prefer) and on a traditional hot dog bun with a large lettuce leaf. I would have preferred to have a most toasted bun, to give the sandwich some good crunch, but overall I was very happy. I was told the Fish & Chips were fried to perfection and that it was also quite flavorful. The scallops were delicious, as were the onion rings. I had never had fried scallops, and so I managed to steal one from Jared's plate and was so surprised as to how much I enjoyed them! I'm excited to make some scallops of my own now :D The seating is all outdoors, so in the summer be ready to wear some sunscreen. It can get pretty toasty, I'm sure. There's a few tables under a smaller awning-type area on the wharf, so look out for any available spots there! Overall, I'm very happy with Five Islands. I'd definitely be up for going again. (:

Lobster roll was very small, very disappointing... Haddock looked good. Fries are those coated extra crunchy not fresh kind. The whole lobsters looked better, should have had that instead. People brought there own drinks and little coolers, that was nice.

  • Helen L.

The whole lobsters here are wonderful. They are boiled in sea water and are perfectly cooked. We had a 4 pound lobster that was caught that day and it was so sweet and tender. (They have various sizes you can choose from). The best lobster we had on our trip to Maine. The drive to Five islands is scenic and worth the trek off the highway. The lobster roll and onion rings were good as well, but it is the whole lobsters that make the trip worthwhile.

    (5)
  • Jared W.

Uh....absolutely awesome. Best place for a summer lobster feast, where freshness is in the flavor. The lobsters are literally being hauled off the boats as you sit there and eat.

  • Sam C.

While the food is good, not great, you cannot beat the setting in Five Islands Harbor. Voted the prettiest little harbor in Maine, there's a reason Five Islands is the go-to. Having been to several wharfs in mid-coast Maine, I haven't been to one that I enjoyed more than Five Islands Lobster Company. While the fried food is ok, the lobster shack has lobster that was caught that day by local lobsterman at a reasonable price.

Worth the drive from Haverhill, MA for the lobster. Fresh out of the bay, cooked to perfection. Could have used a bigger lobster cracker, but who's going to hold that against them. My wife had the Fish & Chips, which were great. My daughter shared my lobster, and rated it excellent. Servers were excellent, helpful and courteous!

We always boat over from Boothbay, and have never driven there, but it is our favorite lunch spot on the coast. Order the Jenny Special sandwich--grilled haddock, with a crab cake. The unwritten rule is to BYOB. I used to think the dock was nuts--once saw it rafted up two deep all around, and saw this summer that the parking lot is worse. Restrooms are the cleanest port-a-potties you have ever seen--no joke, and the man who cleans them is proud of his work--just be aware. Arrive before noon from June 25-Labor Day and avoid the crowds. It is one of the best views on the coast.

The smallest place with the biggest tastiest lobster ever. A must have. Bring your own wine or beer and don't forget the glasses.

Best view and great lobster! On par with Young's lobster pound in Belfast but the view is what makes it even better!

Deeeeelicious! We came here after lounging on Reid beach for the afternoon and it was a perfect end to a great day. We got the Big Boy lobster sandwhich, crab cakes, haddock stew and onion rings. The crab cakes were actually two cakes stacked together and served as a sandwhich. The cakes were PHENOMENAL. Like melt in your mouth, where did you come from...amazing. The big boy was also an impressive sandwich with pieces of lobster overflowing from the bread halves. Is it enough for 2 people? Maybe- but not for me. I unfortunately had to share it with my bf but I will definitely order my own if we come back because it is just that good and I am that selfish. Get the pesto mayo aioli sauce because it makes the crab cakes and probably anything else you want to spread it on. Skip the soup and the onion rings (if you get your own Big Boy, you will need to). Also, I got multiple bites during the 30 min we were here so maybe spray some OFF ahead of time. Enjoy!

Five Islands used to be my go-to place for lobster rolls. The setting cannot be better; it's simply gorgeous. The lobster roll, however, was a total disappointment this year. The meat didn't seem fresh and was a small quantity. The roll was ok. The chips were soggy. I would have been better off getting a sandwich from a local deli and picnicking in Reid state park.

  • Matthew L.

I arrived at Five Islands right as a large tour bus group was getting off the bus. At first I thought I would waiting in line forever; however, the sandwich line moved ridiculously fast and the orders came out quick. The lobster roll was delicious and the lobster meat tasted so fresh. My wife and I each ordered 1.25 lb lobsters, which were just as good. In addition to eating great tasting lobster, eating on the water and enjoying the view was exactly how I imagined my first trip to a lobster shack.

This was my second visit. The first was August 2013 when I rented a house overlooking the restaurant to attend a wedding. The food was delish, the ocean-front atmosphere awesome, and the photo ops were amazing. After this visit, I recommended the restaurant to many people and then finally had the opportunity to bring some friends up for a day trip to the restaurant and to Reid State Park. Strengths: Food is delish. Atmosphere is wonderful - ocean front, able to walk to water to dip toes in, spectacular views, great picture opportunities of working boats, good sized food portions Needs improvement: Be sure that order-taker is an effective communicator & able to answer questions regarding menu. Be sure to ask very specific questions when ordering so that you get exactly what you want. You can get some things without any sides and you can get some things with side options. Be sure that menu is accurate before beginning to take orders; people wait in line and figure out what they want and should not arrive at the order taker only to be told that items are not available Provide signage for new patrons regarding what lines to be in for what foods (maybe signs were not out yet?) More . . . Parking is tight but well worth waiting for a spot (or better yet, park elsewhere and ride your bike in). There are a handful of Bed & breakfasts as well as houses and cottages available for rent. I recommend staying at least several days if you want to see more than just the restaurant. There are some small shops around here and there and Reid State Park is a great place to explore as well as to just chill on one of the several beaches. Watch the tides - if it is a really bust weekend or holiday, there isn't a lot of room on the beach at high tide. Half mile beach is more gently sloping with lower waves while Mile Beach is steeper with larger waves that break at the beach edge (at least the days that I was there). There is also a small, cozy cove between the two beaches with a very small beach area and some rocks but worth it if you like a little more privacy. If you are high maintenance, this might not be the place for you. Port-a_potties only. Seating is traditional outdoor ocean side picknik tables, and mainly in sunny areas. Check weather before going. Yes, your fingers will get messy especially if you eat the steamers and lobsters. Unfortunately, the last exchange that I had with one of the people in the order hut was a snide remark aimed at my friend (who had wanted one of the items on the menu that was unavailable and then was misinformed by the order taker about the availability of something else) and but I don't think that this is indicative of the overall culture of the place.

Absolutely amazing, spectacular setting. Make a pilgrimage if you are anywhere near this place. The food was great. Were they the best fried clams I've ever had, no, but they were great. Were they the best onion rings I've ever had, no, but they were great. The only seating is outside, so go on a nice day. Note that you can get coleslaw, red potatoes and/or corn in the lobster building to go with anything you get in the fried/grilled/lobster roll building. I missed this fact and ended up with only onion rings and French fries to go with my fried clams. Bring your own alcohol, and wet wipes (only restroom is a porta potty).

The lobster rolls were very meaty and sweet. I would definitely get their homemade onion rings and the Jenny da which with the cilantro mayo really good. I also ordered a 1lbd lobster can't beat the taste or the freshness.

Getting there is half the fun. Scenic country Maine roads that lead to the coast. From Bath head south on 127 and when you get to the end of the road you're at 5 Islands. This was my first lobster roll, and it was fantastic. The setting is perfect. A lobster shack right on the water with some picnic tables and BYO. My gf and I drove from Portland while visiting the area in October and it's well worth the trip -- a perfect Maine experience. The lobster roll was delicious. If I'm ever back in the area I will definitely make a pit stop, and seek out more gems that dot the coast. Happy eats!

we came here two years ago and came back again this week. So delicious. I had the fish and chips and it was the best I ever had ... Very light breading, but packed with a good crunch. The haddock was meaty and flaky! So delicious... I would highly recommend this. You can easily share this with a friend as well. - My friend had the lobster roll and was disappointed with the lack of lobster in the roll (guess after you have red eats you can't compare to anywhere else) - My other friends enjoyed the steamed lobster - Must buy the corn and the onion rings! Tip: Bring mosquito repellant, unless you want to be feasted on too! :( Enjoy!

  • David Y.

The lobster we ordered was over 2 lbs and it took about 20 mins for it to finish steaming but it was worth the wait! Good pricing and probably some of the sweetest lobster meat I've ever had. Sit on the wooden bench and enjoy digging into some of the best Maine lobster you can get. It was quite a hike to get here though so if you're not into the ocean view while chowing down... then there's something seriously wrong with you (jk) It's worth the visit guys and they accept credit card! Just promise me you'll go easy on the butter. The meat is sweet and tasty enough that you don't need to drown it in liquid cholesterol but hey, I'm not your physician. Do what you wanna do!

If you're a seafood lover like me and happened to be in Maine, you shouldnt pass the chance to visit this place. Place is pretty straight forward. Their place is divided into two shacks. One to order lobsters and one to order their sandwiches and fried baskets. Theres another separate shack to buy ice cream (Giffords). Lobsters are so fresh, straight from lobstermen who delivers them from their boat straight to the shacks backdoor. You can order them with potatoes, and corn. They will lend you a crab cracker for a $2 deposit. We also tried their fish and chips which is fried haddock. Fish was a good size and fresh and juicy fries is not so. Kind of soggy but I didnt came there for their fries. You can choose among their homemade dips. Lobster rolls were also great. Generous amount of lobster in it. I didnt feel I was ripped of with the price I paid for the food I ordered. Place is not touristy although you know theres a lot of people eating that are not local. Picnic tables outside, nice view of the water. Only porta toilets available but their pretty clean. Bring your baby wipes. No soap and tap water to wash your hands in. Theres a washing sink outside with faucet but only

As a visitor to Maine, this was just absolutely amazing. It appears even the locals love this place. It's a shack. With picnic tables. You go in and order lobster or clams. You find out what "soft shell lobster" is. You realize the locals throw away all the stuff you dig for because, for them, it's so available. You have a great time, talk to the employees and buy a t-shirt. It's all cool.

Having lived in Maine for 10 years, and being well-traveled since, I must say that this place is my new favorite for lobster rolls. Returning to Maine, and finding this gem, was the greatest thing to happen to me this summer. What appears to be 1/3lb (or at least 1/4lb) of lobster is slapped right onto a split-top bun, with nothing but a piece of lettuce as a bed. Now that's a lobster roll. You can ask for a side of drawn butter, if you like it CT style. But, this is ME, so you have to ask for it like that. I got the fries and soda for an extra $3, bought two coozies, too and walked out of there for $24.95. Some guys in my group had the salmon fish sticks, which were bomb. One guy had a burger, but I wouldn't ever trot all the way out to a seafood joint for anything but that. The majority of us had the lobster roll and demolished it within 2-3 minutes. Without the fries, I would have still been a bit hungry. The location is PRIME. We arrived on our boat from Trevett, which is a quick 15 minute boat-ride away. That said, be prepared for tourists that have no idea what they're doing, will hold up lines only to order chicken fingers, and then rudely bump into while shooting you a nasty glare. Technically, I was a tourist, too, but I never saw so many people bumping into each other. The tourists I've seen in Times Square paled in comparison to these ones. They take credit cards! Aka: they're in the 21st century, and put their customer's needs before theirs! If only they had beer. Luckily the extremely thoughtful and perky cashier gave word that there was a farm stand about 1/10th of a mile up the road that had beer. Perfect segue to: the staff were delightful. Everyone had a smile on their face and were almost giddy with welcoming excitement. There was PLENTY of seating for large groups and small alike. If you don't like crowds, avoid on the weekends between the hours of noon and 1:30pm. Also, if you're a tourist, please do everyone a favor and read the menu before you go, so by the time you are at the front of the line you actually know what you want. And if you want chicken fingers, there's an Applebee's for that back in Portland that would love your business. Also a McDonald's.

Maine lobster does not get any fresher than this! Literally, the food served here is pulled out from the water Five Islands is built on. I ordered the lobster roll, which was piled with large chunks of succulent lobster, along with fried oysters. OMG, the fried oysters were the best I've ever had. Also, the view is incredible. I would pay just for the drive there and the view, let alone the food being served. In my opinion this is the only true way to experience Maine lobster. Great job, Five Islands, keep it up!

Five Islands is the quintessential Maine lobster shack. Located on the water, you can enjoy a delicious lobster roll while sitting on a pier overlooking the water and boats. The lobster meat is standout and has the perfect texture and flavor. Bun is lightly buttered and everything comes together well

Best place to have lobster in the state of Maine. Great views better food. BYOB. Can't beat the atmosphere. This is a real Maine lobstering Village.

Beautiful views and excellent food! We ate here twice while staying in Georgetown. The setting really is picture perfect and staff friendly. I got steamed lobster both times and my husband lobster rolls and chowder. Onions rings were delicious! Our small kids are seafood shy so we were thankful for a chicken option for them. You can BYOB which is a bonus. Seating is all outdoors on picnic tables so bring a sweater on cooler nights. It was very crowded the second time we went but by the time our food was ready (15-20 min) a table had opened up for us. We were also able to take our pup with us. Our kids enjoyed being able to run around while us adults enjoyed our yummy seafood.

This is a great place to stop by in the summer time. Nothing like sitting on a dock eating seafood. They have one area for ordering lobsters and another for other seafood delights such as fried scallops, fish and chips, and crab cakes. Coming here with a group is a good idea because then you get to sample lots of different things. The last trip here I had lobster, a crab cake sandwich, steamers, fried oysters, and cole slaw. Everything was good. The steamers were especially delicious. There was a little hiccup in the timing of the food - I think they forgot about our lobster order, but everything worked out. They have some drinks - ice teas, sodas you can buy and you can also BYOB. Grab some friends, some wine/beer, and hop on over to Five Islands for a seafood feast overlooking the water!

I could be like everyone else and write about how gorgeous this place is, or how good the lobster rolls are. But I am going to take a different route. The vegetarian route that is. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this place had veggie burgers, and grilled cheese! We had two young kids with us, so the grilled cheese and hot dogs they offer at this place were definitely a big help. Two small things that kind of irked me. First, when the woman tells you about the window where they will call your number, it is not the window facing the ocean, in fact, just the opposite. We waited for at least a half an hour before we realized this. Also, I found the portions of fries to be small. I think next time I will get the onion rings. They looked pretty decent.

This place is pretty awesome! one if the best and freshest lobsters I had. They keep all their lobsters in their tanks which pumps the sea water to keep it really fresh. This is a cozy little place by the waters. Prices are pretty reasonable and food are very fresh.

The lobsters are consistent here, but the prices has doubled since out last trip out here. Ice cream prices are still the same!

An unrealistically realistically rustic dining experience-- Five Islands Lobster Co indulges its patrons' dream of eating seafood in what feels like a picture perfect New England train set (except, er, boat set because it's a dock and the water and lack of trains). Rounding the corner, through the rambling hills and woods, you come upon a cluster of red houses on an ageless dock. Seagulls and terns laugh in the distance (and from inside the trash cans) while people from all walks of life crack into steaming red lobsters and clams. The joyful sound of lobster boats bubbling into the harbor is rivaled only by the pleasurable screams of grubby children running after dogs while holding their dripping ice cream cones. It's almost enough to make you believe in that rural serenity you knew in your innermost thoughts simply must exist outside of storybooks......... Real talk tho- the place looks like a postcard, can be a little on the expensive side because of it but the lobster is mad tasty so whatevs.

We ate here three times during our vacation week at Indian Point, Georgetown, ME. We love the food- large-bellied fries clams are super- the batter is just the right amount and the clams are tender and sweet. The Jenny Special sandwich is grilled haddock and a crab cake on a sesame roll - so juicy and flavorful. All can be had with home made tartar sauce- the best we've ever had. And the onion rings are phenomenal- tasty batter over juicy onions. The ambience is casual - a Maine harbor as pretty as any. Very quiet - even on a Friday not too crazy. It is BYOB and the only dessert option is Annabelle's ice cream in about 6 flavors- a great option if you have room. We will definitely be back next year!

  • Elizabeth M.

BYOB (option: grab beers from the farmstand down the street). Bypass the lobster roll (it's good but the main event comes straight from the ocean floor) and grab yourself a one and a half pound (or more!) lobster. Park it at a picnic table, watch the boats, the tourists, the sunset and enjoy the best that Maine has to offer.

This is the quintessential Maine seafood shack experience. The food (we got a lobster roll and a steamed hardshell lobster) might not be the absolute best, but it's pretty darn close, and when combined with the setting, Boom! Five stars for Five Islands. Lobsters were being brought in literally the entire time we were there, so if you demand the freshest possible lobsters, this is the place for you.

Setting is gorgeous. You eat outside on the pier, with the water all around. Service was great too ... the folks in the lobster shack were super nice to my son and let him see the lobster area and even touch a few. We got a boiled lobster, which was tasty as lobster can be. We also got fish and chips, which tasted crazy fresh. The breading was awesome. The fish itself could have used seasoning though, which was my only complaint. All in all, a great evening out.

GET THE JENNY SPECIAL. Crab cake + Haddock + some yummy sauce (choose from cilantro, dill mustard, and house-made tarter sauce--all incredible). Skip on the lobster roll--the meat from the whole lobsters is much, much tastier. BYOB and you'll have yourself a beautiful dinner by the picturesque harborside.

If there is such a thing as 5-star dining on a picnic table, with disposable utensils, THIS is it!!! The steamed lobster went from frolicking with friends, to my plate in 15 minutes. I chose the "soft shell" variety for sweetness & ease of eating. Sides of corn, coleslaw & onion rings from the adjoining "fried" stand completed the quintessential Maine experience. Everything about the dinner was amazing and the view was off the charts! The only way the experience could have been more perfect, was if I'd paid more attention to earlier reviews and packed a tablecloth and bottle of wine. Next time!!!

This place is my third Maine lobster roll experience. While not the best, it's definitely good, and the scenery can't be beat. The roll starts out with your standard buttered split hot dog bun, jammed with cool, slightly mayo-y lobster. There's a little piece of prerequisite leaf lettuce at the bottom, but this is all about the lobster. I think the reason it's not at the top is because I like a really "crunchy" butter toasted bun. Price at the time was $13.50. We also tried the onion rings. It's a huge portion, coated with crispy corn-crust with salt & pepper. Being a Pittsburgh guy, I was annoyed with the "fancy catsup" offering, versus the gold-standard Heinz. The view....best I've seen from a lobster shack so far. We only hung out for 45 minutes or so, as the wind coming off the water was pretty frigid. Lastly, if you're not in a rush, stop by Reid state park on the way back. Be advised that it's $4.50-$6.50 to get in (depending if you're from Maine or not..or if she likes you and gives you the "local" price...) but it's a nice beach and has facilities.

Heading back to Boston from camping trip with two other guys and discussing our experience at this restaurant. We loved the locale and the local feel but thought the food was overpriced and mediocre. Paid $15 for jenny's special and onion rings but was still hungry. Would recommend the location for a look -see but not to eat.

One of the best seafood meals I've ever had! Lobster was fresh and delicious and the fried clams were the best I've ever had. You know you're in the right place when all the fishermen are there eating too. A must for the area.

If you've never had lobster before then this place is ok. If you're from New England this place is an overrated rip off. The lobster prices are high the fried food is mediocre and the selection lame (we did try it the weekend after Labor Day). I can think of a dozen better similar places on both the Maine & New Hampshire coast. One thing I can't understand is why lobster costs more in the heart of Maine lobster country than it does further down the coast in NH. If you want a better lobster roll for less money drive back up the road to the Georgetown Country store. I gave this place 2 stars because it has a great spot with a terrific view.

Lets get the only complaint about this place out of the way- on weekends the place gets crowded and the ideal spots to sit and eat will be taken / parking could be an issue. But otherwise its a fantastic place to enjoy a lobster. I drove 6 hrs from NYC just to have their lobster. Lobsters are priced fairly [08/01/2014- a 1.25lb lobster cost me $9.75/lb]. Their lobster rolls are good- plenty of lobster meat on the roll. Do try they cilantro mayo. Id skip the onion rings and stick with chips. Fried oysters were delicious. The best part of this place is the views. Simply beautiful. Also bring a cooler w/ some beer. BYOB. Once you finish the beer you can pack the cooler with some great [and cheap compared to nyc] lobsters. Two things will improve the experience here 1) an exhaust system for the kitchen that is a bit quieter 2) A place where families can refill a water container with fresh potable H20.

I'm spoiled. I have an annual choice between lobster rolls at 5 islands, robinsons wharf, trevett, reds, spragues, boothbay lobster co-op, etc. the 5 islands experience is unique.

This is your ideal notion of a Maine Lobster Pound. Order lobsters at the lobster shed (the building farther away from the parking lot) first as the lobsters take longer to cook. Order everything else in the building closest to the parking lot. The grilled haddock sandwich is amazingly good. Great fried clams(whole belly of course). BYOB if you like. Gorgeous views. Outdoor seating (bring a jacket in the fall). And have the best lobster you ever had (they say it's because the water is so cold).

I was here earlier this week for the first time in 24 years! The last time I was there I was 5/6 years old. It was exactly how I remembered it to be. The woman behind the register was super helpful in guiding me toward ordering what I wanted. Being from Philadelphia, it's not every day I get to pick out a lobster of my choice and eat it 15 minutes later. I didn't know the difference between a hard or soft shell lobster. She walked me back into the steam room to show me the difference and we decided on a soft shell (since I'm a novice at cracking open the beasts.) I got something between a 2-3 lb lobster and paid about $14. She was right - the soft shell was easy enough to break open with my hands and the meat was very tender. The food was great, but the entire experience of it all is what earns this place 5 stars. We were there on a gorgeous day eating lobster on a pier with a breathtaking view. It was awesome. We are planning another trip to Maine next year and we will definitely be stopping back.

I was kind of disappointed with Five Islands. I thought Red's Eats was a better. The piece of green that they added to the lobster roll didn't do much. The lobster was fresh, as is most lobster pounds/shacks, but the quantity was average. I know the sides usually aren't the main selling point, but they could do away with the chips with the lobster rolls. A coleslaw or something would've been better.

A fun place, especially when you arrive by boat. I enjoyed the picnic atmosphere, sitting in the sun right on the water so there was a cool breeze. Lobstermen bringing their daily catches right up onto the wharf right next to you. Pretty cool to see. I got the Jenny Special sandwich (grilled haddock with a crab cake on top) with the cilantro mayo. It was great! Everything was fresh and very tasty. Menu had your typical seafood baskets as well as some unique items like salmon fish and chips, which I plan on trying during my next visit! At the lobster shack next door, they offer whole lobsters, steamers, corn, potatoes, etc. if you're not into the whole fried seafood/basket or roll meals. I got a laugh out of the kid yelling the orders out the pick-up window. Great place for a quick lunch while out boating.

There are a lot of places like this in Maine - drive in (or dock in) seafood shack. And they are all fairly similar, so let me just point out what's different here. (1) View is beyond great. (2) Usual story - steamed lobster is sold at a different window, but it's sold by the pound, more like a fish market (which it is when the restaurant is not operating). (3) Portapotties. (4) More of a BYOB place than other unlicensed places - have no idea why, but I've seen wine chilling in silver ice buckets on tablecloths spread over the picnic tables, (5) The working lobster dock is not separate from the tourist area - beware of no railings and possible smelly bait barrels. (6) Onion ring batter is loaded with pepper! (It's good). (7) They have a sandwich with crab cake and not-fried haddock combined (Jenny Special) - very good. All food is very fresh and competently cooked. Watch out for huge crowds on Summer weekends. And look, Aunt Minnie and Uncle Festus from Topeka, why do you wait until you get to the front of a long line before you start arguing over what to order???

Fresh right out of the water lobsters. Try the soft shell lobsters, only $5.50 each this year. You can bring your own wine or alcohol of your choice. Most patrons eat right there on the pier at one of the picnic tables. The view is great and food is fresh in this self serve get down seafood hot spot.

Food was great. Scenery was lovely. 2 x 1.5 - 2 lb + 2 corn + 2 potatoes + cole slaw + drink was under $50. Lobster prices very greatly with location, and I was not offended by the price at this location. I would definitely recommend it and I will be back on my next trip to the area. My only knock is the shell crackers: I would have preferred a rock. Oh yes and be sure to leave room for ice cream next door.

We came here on our honeymoon and will keep coming back every time we are in Maine. The freshest lobster, clams, and fish with the most gorgeous view of the five little islands. Sit on the picnic tables and watch the boats come in as you pick apart a lobster.

I love Maine. What I love even more, is a relaxing and fun road trip with friends and lobster. Lotsa lobsta. Having just returned from a weekend getaway to Vacationland, or what I now know as summer camp, I'm thinking of making another trip back in the Fall. For the time being, let's start at the beginning. We had grand plans to go to the Maine Lobsterfest in Rockland; but while planning for our gastro road trip, we found so many other wonderful places to eat lobster as well. Thus began our very own Maine Lobster Roll Tasting. Lobster Roll #1: 5 Islands Lobster Co., $16/lobster roll - Light on the mayo - One slice of lettuce - Buttered, toasted white roll - Super fresh lobster, right from the dock; portion was decent - Ruffles potato chips on the side Overall rating: 4 lobster claws for the big chunks of fresh lobster They skimped on the lettuce, were light on the mayo, and the lobster portion was decent but not as generous as we'd hoped. For me, however, it was just enough lettuce and just enough mayo. Why deprive your taste buds of the good stuff? First bite of lobster + sitting on the dock playing travel Scrabble + views of "the prettiest harbour" in Maine, we were happy as a clam times 4. We also ordered a half pint of clam steamers ($8), served with clam brine and butter. Salty, but salty in the best way possible. It will be difficult to find steamers as fresh as these, that's for sure. One lobster roll down.

Stopped here on my way up the coast from Portland to the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland. It's a pretty drive off beaten path, and a lovely setting. And after 4 days in Maine, I can safely say it was the best lobster and steamer I had the entire time! I got a soft-shell, and it was so succulent and delicious. The steamers were equally good. I'd go back in a heart beat, and am missing them already!!!

The beautiful setting was just the beginning. We ordered at a counter from a chalkboard menu. The barebones establishment matched the simplicity of the food. Our lobster roll was fresh with piled on, chunky lobster meat and had the perfect amount of mayo. The roll was crusty and toasted in butter. Served with chips. This is exactly the no frills, honest lobster roll stand I was looking for.

Why does Lobster taste so much better in Maine than in NYC? The lobsters here were cooked to sweet perfection and the locally grown yellow corn was superbly crisp and juicy. Both were cooked in the exact same seawater from which the lobster was extracted. I also enjoyed a basket of fried clams and fries. The homemade tartar sauce was a perfect complement. The clams could have stayed in the fryer another minute or two, but this is only a minor complaint. I hightly recommend sailing here (although it's accessible by car). It's a pretty little working harbor with a lot of character.
