Being from a state that experiences a much more severe and prolonged summer, I still don't quite understand the disproportionate concentration of ice cream/froyo/custard shops in Maine. But when in Rome... In search of a mid-afternoon snack on our return from visiting the Portland Head Light, we happened upon Mainely Custard. Aside from the clever moniker, we were drawn to the seeming simplicity of the menu - 3 flavors of custard. Granted, the full menu of frozen-ness approaches a novel in length, but we put custard blinders on. Vanilla, Chocolate, and Flavor-of-the-Day (posted at the window and on their website) are your options. From there, it's no holds barred. 3 of our party of 4 got the Brownie DLite, and while the delivery of our cones was slightly sluggish, the end result was delicious. The plain waffle cone in our group got rave reviews for lightness and flavor. The chocolate coated cones were more dense and not quite as delicate, but still hit the spot.

Pretty decent custard, but our family prefers Abbots and Meadows better. It was a bit hard and not as creamy as others. The prices were decent and portions generous.

So here it is the end of August and I realize I haven't had my yearly frozen custard. As a rule of someone that lives a few towns away, during the summer Freeport is off limits, unless desperate. There are very few places I ever get desperate for in Freeport and this is one of them. Lucky for me, today is a bit cool out (freezing to the outta state-ah's that are bundled in sweatshirts and designer coats). Anyways, I figured I needed my fix and maybe I did succumb to the chill and three on a sweatshirt, but I did it in the name of frozen custard. Today they had chocolate rasp and orange. Duh! Chocolate raspberry! The young teen asked if I wanted it in a dish or cone. Bud! I'm so enthralled with my incoming chocolate custard I can't make that kind of decision! I told him to surprise me. He gave me a goofy grin and bounded off for my treat. Since it wasn't that busy, I soon was handed my cone of gold. Mmmm. So worth the calories. Screw losing weight for the wedding in 50 days! Frozen custard from this place is meant to be consumed without a care.

Such great frozen custard! Good flavor and texture. They also have standard soft serve available.

tried the vanilla and chocolate custard and the vanilla was by far my favorite, the chocolate just seemed a little too rich for me but my wife enjoyed it. I thought the prices were pretty low actually for the serving size we received.

You just have to stop by for custard. They always have chocolate and vanilla but each day of the month they have a different custard flavor. Love the hot fudge sundae with the chocolate custard. So creamy.

Frozen Custard in Maine! Woo-hoo! I pulled into the parking lot to try out the frozen custard, since it was very hot outside. Frozen custard has a slight more egg than the traditional ice cream. However, I was a bit disappointed that they only offered 3 flavors of frozen custard (chocolate, vanilla, & flavor of the day) since the other custard places I've been to (Abbott's in Rochester NY and Ted Drewe's in St. Louis, MO) offer way more flavors. For custard treats, they offer cones/dishes, sundaes, concretes, and floats. Soft serve ice cream treats with flavorburst options, smoothies, and fountain drinks are also available. Seating on the covered deck and picnic table seating on-site. I got the small Andes Candy Concrete with Chocolate Custard ($3.85 plus tax), which was very rich, dense, and sweet, an okay custard to me, but still good on a hot day. Next stop, Classic Cookout next door for a cheeseburger! NOTE: Cash only

We've always came for the delicious custard, but today decided to have lunch as well. They gave us two hotdog choices; regular and red. red was locally made and more pink than anything else. The French fries are good but the onion rings are great. The custard is fantastic and always worth the trip!

Grew up with frozen custard in New Gloucester, but when this place opened I became a huge fan. The chocolate just seemed richer than Hodgmans, and there is more variety with soft serve ice cream and other treats made with the frozen custard. Make sure you get to the shop early on favorite flavor days just to make sure the flavor hasn't run out!

Frozen custard: so decadent. This place is great, its worth a little excursion North. CASH ONLY! And check the hours and flavors available before you go. I've been disappointed to find this place closed and/or not featuring my favorite custard flavor.

Custard is good here.. Not enough different flavors though however their soft serve is awesome... The consistency is thicker than most soft serve served elsewhere. Better than DQ , Mcdees etc. This place is close to home which makes it even better. Now we know where to go for soft serve. Try the flavor burst which is soft serve vanilla ice cream with flavor twist. I tried the raspberry flavor burst and it was yummy!

Yummy custard. I love this place and stop everytime I go by on my way home from Portland. Sometimes I even make a trip just for the custard. Only one special flavor plus choc and vanilla but I am never disappointed with the chocolate if the special is not my cup of tea.

I was so excited for a yummy cone of frozen custard but I too was dissappointed when I discovered that there was only three flavors but that dissappeared when I took that first lick of the delicious chocolate custard.

Of all the ice cream and custard stands that I've eaten at over the years this is by far the best. Custard is available as soft serve or as hard custard. It's not all fluffed up with air so it's much heavier than you expect and more filling. Hard comes typically as vanilla, chocolate and one special flavor that varies. Soft serve comes in many flavors as it can be flavor infused as they dispense it. The hard custard can be combined with different flavors such as butterfingers, Reese's Peanut-butter Cup, Heath Bar, etc. and is called a "concrete." Generally I get a vanilla concrete with whatever strikes my fancy, or a soft serve. Of course they also have more traditional custards in Sundays, cones, etc. and those I've tried are great. Searching for something "bad" to say the only thing I can think of is that they are not open year round.

Creamy and delicious. True frozen custard. They always have vanilla and chocolate and then they feature a special flavor everyday (banana, mocha, mango, etc). Their flavors are scheduled a month in advance. The custard is velvety smooth and has a much creamier texture than ice cream. They have a great porch to relax on and enjoy that velvety goodness. Just a few miles south of llbean.

I went with a youth group here a few days ago. They did really well with the large crowd. It can't be easy when you see a bus roll in to your store's parking lot! The prices were actually really reasonable I'd say. Definitely check it out of you're visiting Freeport!

Nom, nom, nom. This place is scrumdiddlyumptious and a bargain for the size. We purchased a peanut butter sundae and I had the traditional hot chocolate sundae. Our total after taxes was under $10.00 and they fill us up (our dog had a taste too). I'm not kidding, who knew I could become addicted to custard ice-cream. I loved the vanilla and may even just go cone next time, since it was so good by itself. I took a picture of the price menu - super reasonable and the sizes are filling. Cash only, limited varieties. Today's custard flavors were: chocolate, vanilla, and maple. Their website lists the daily flavor. I can't wait to go back, sorry waistline, it's happening. Perfect spot with shaded tables, and close to Freeport or Yarmouth trails to walk our pup afterwards.

The blackberry custard was nice. Waffle cone was fresh. Vanilla was rich and creamy. If I am ever in the area again I will stop by.
