I love this place. Yeah, the dining room is kind of cold, and the service can be fairly slow, but that's the only reason this isn't a 5 star review. The food is always amazing. My favorites are the pad thai, drunken noodle, thai rolls, and the chicken tempura. The portions are more than generous. I've never had a bad meal from here. The woman who runs the place is great, and her two young kids who help out are adorable. Never in a bad mood, always friendly. This is my go to place when I want to go out locally. Whether you're new to the area, here on vacation, or you've lived here all your life, for a huge portion at a small price, go to Amanda Thai.

My wife and I came here during the last night of a 5-day trip in Maine. By this point we were tired of lobster and wanted something Asian. When we entered the restaurant, there was no one there to greet us, and after waiting about 5 minutes...someone finally came out to greet us just as we were about to leave. We started off with some vegetable soup which I highly recommend (4 stars). The entrees are what brings this down to a 3 star overall rating/review. My "Famous Pad Thai" was way too sweet, and my wife's "Hot Basil Leaves" dish wasn't anything memorable either. We probably would not go back again if we were ever in Freeport again and instead would probably drive 10-15 minutes further to get some better Asian food.

Very disappointed. Very cold in dining room. Dinner 3/13/14. Heat not on according to server. Had stir fry shrimp/scallops with spicy garlic sauce. Not a hint of heat or garlic in sauce. No onions or peppers according to menu. Came loaded with onion, green pepper & red pepper. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but not what I ordered. Questioned server...she questioned cook who told her that what I got is how he makes it. Will not return or recommend.

The most delicious Thai Food. Handmade dumplings, homemade dough. Pad Thai is to kill for. Vermicelli Soup broth feels like it was made by your grandmother if she was from Bangkok! Awesome! Russ from Kauai.

My Fiance and I have tried this place 3 times to give it a good solid chance at some sort of comeback. The first 2 times I had Panang curry which is a favorite dish of mine. I don't like a huge amount of spice to my food so I asked for no stars and it was super bland. My fiance loves spicy food so he asked for the maximum amount of stars and his was incredibly bland as well. The third time we went I got pad thai and my fiance got the drunken noodle. I asked for 1-2 stars and he asked for the maximum amount of stars. Again, both dishes were very bland with no spice at all. We also got the veggie fresh spring rolls. This spring rolls themselves were not bad, but the sauce that came with them was weirdly acidic and tasted much too much like vinegar. This last time around it was also freezing in the restaurant. Two parties at two different parts of the restaurant had wheeled over the little fireplaces to have in front of their tables, and everyone (including me) had their coats on. I was so cold that as I was trying to look something up on my phone I could barely use it because my fingers were freezing! The only thing saving them from getting 1 star was the customer service. Besides walking in to no one at the counter and waiting for about 5 minutes (they seemed to only have one person working on a Saturday night; poor girl) the people we encountered were friendly. Our server was a young girl and an older lady who I assumed was the owner came and offered us tea. (I think because she knew how freezing in there it was!) both were nice and the owner was very friendly. I gave it 3 chances and will not be going back for a 4th.

We are locals. Tried this place for second time because we didn't want to drive to the good Thai food place in town after a very long weekend at a training away. Not only does the space have a unkempt feel the place was EMPTY! not a good sign. Arrived to pick up takeout. Paid but when the staff person saw I had cash, asked for that instead of card. What?! I refused and paid by card. Got home to find he forgot to put our family size soup in the to go bag ($7). Too tired to go back for it. To top it off the food is way to acidic and just plain not good... Don't go here. They will be closing soon I am sure of it. Nice people but the food is bad.

The restaurant itself is a dump. They put no effort into aesthetics. Our server was a lovely senior citizen (local white American) who was overwhelmed with a lunch time rush of four tables. She had no idea about the menu and had difficulty communicating with the native Thai chef. I overheard them bickering about a misunderstanding on an order. It took 5 minutes to be acknowledged and seated although the restaurant was empty. Between the ugliness and slowness were almost took off before ordering. However, the smell wafting out of the kitchen seduced us into staying. We ordered the Pad Thai and Penang. Both were decent considering the very reasonable lunch price. The lunches came with a bland vegetable soup that was a perfect and healthy start to the meal. If you're sick of lobster rolls and have a yen for Thai, stop on by.

Great Thai food! Wonderful Amanda fried fried is amazing, get it medium spicy! Always friendly and great service, hardworking local business. We come all the time. Be prepared sometimes it's cold if it's cold outside, the building is old and big, just get it spicy when you eat :-)

I've been coming here since they opened a few year ago. I've noticed some very good changes/improvements but the place isn't perfect. The decor is still a bit off (the place used to be a Friendly's and thus is set up as such). And it's always a bit slow. BUT. The food, is soooo gooood. We usually get take out and I've never had anything other than fresh, yummy, high quality food. If you order take out, give them a few extra minutes. It's not usually ready when I show up. In other words, don't come here if you're in a rush. But come here if you want great food.

My husband and I had dinner here a few nights ago. We came up to Freeport for the LLBean Summer Concert Series and were told by the locals that this was a unique weekend for the town since there were so many visitors coming to see that evening's performance. With that in mind, we were expecting the restaurants in the area to be busy. There was only one woman at the front who served as the hostess and the wait staff serving the entire restaurant. We were also seated by the kitchen so we could see the orders going in and out and from our vantage point, could see that there was also only one cook cooking for a packed place! The waitress took everyone's order in the order that guests arrived, and although she was stretched that evening, she was still very kind, accommodating, and friendly. After about an hour, our food finally arrived and the cook himself brought out our dishes. He was so apologetic but we completely understood given how busy Freeport and the restaurant was that weekend and how under staffed they were. We ordered the Drunken Noodle with tofu and Red Curry with chicken and we LOVED the food. We've eaten at many Thai restaurants up and down the East and West Coast and we were both very impressed by the quality and the taste of our dishes. The next time we're in town, we're definitely going to come by this place! Give this place a chance: come for the good food and the friendly service and maybe come on a less busier evening.

Delicious authentic food. I enjoy every meal every time. Family atmosphere the owners children are often present and welcoming. The Drunkin noodle is my favorite. It's the best Asian cuisine in Freeport. I don't eat here for the atmosphere, I come for the food. I lived in Hawaii and I love Thai food and this is great food.

Let me start out by saying I love Pad Thai. I don't know if I'm the world's most knowledgeable reviewer of Thai food, but I know what I like based upon what I've had in New England. That being said, to call Amanda Thai a "dump," and crack on what I found to be a serviceable Thai take-out restaurant in a tourist-y shopping town filled with outlets and one iconic outdoor retailer seems a bit unfair. After yet another power failure (this one caused by a piece of construction equipment knocking down two poles near the new bridge going in) in my hometown on Friday night at 5:00, it was time to figure out what to do for dinner. My wife suggested that I grab Thai and she suggested Amanda (vs. driving out to the Route 1 end of Freeport, where we usually do Thai, locally). I'm glad she did. If decor and all the other aesthetic kind of things are important, then great-tasting Thai food in a converted Friendly's might be off-putting. However, the small bar area was more than sufficient to wait for my order, as I walked in and ordered off the menu. The owner (?) was there and was very friendly. She offered a suggestion when I asked about something to add to my usual Pad Thai choice, and I'm glad she did. I also ordered the Amanda Lo Mein w/ calamari, and another noodle dish that had diced carrots, snow peas, and broccoli (sorry, not sure of the name). All three were outstanding, with the Pad Thai having a bit of a kick, even though I went with medium spicy, but I was fine with it. We also had crispy Thai rolls as an appetizer. Very fresh ingredients and lightly-fried. One little personal piccadillo I have. I hate going to places where, when I leave, my clothes reek of the food being prepared. Amanda Thai obviously has a good ventilation system, as my clothes didn't need to be aired-out when I got home. I have a simple rule for take-out food. If I can heat it up the morning after (usually for breakfast) in the microwave and I'm still impressed by the taste, then it's good food. My breakfast leftovers were outstanding! Freeport, for all it's retail options is a bit light on the food side. Given that it's closer to home than Brunswick or Lewiston, I'm glad to have another take-out option for those nights when I'm looking for an alternative to throwing something together at home.

My mom and I go to Amanda's almost once every other week. We absolutely love Chii the owner, she is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Her kids are there with her most times we go and they are very polite and thoughtful. Now to get down to brass tacks. The first time I visited I had the Tofu Red Curry (2 star spice level) and it was delicious. Red curry is my favorite dish but I had never had it with tomato and pineapple before. Though it was really quite good I find the pineapple isn't the taste I want with curry so I switched to the Tofu Green Curry for my next visit. I cannot stress how fantastic the Green Curry is. Every time I go I now order it with the highest level of spice. The last time I went for lunch I actually considered going back for dinner too. Some people have talked about the atmosphere in the restaurant and have been fairly unkind about it. Amanda's is a large building in a very open plot of land. It must cost a fortune to heat it to the 70/75 degree temperature that people are used too. Business slows down in the winter and those heating bills need to be paid somehow. They do have rolling electric fireplaces that they move to your table when you come in. Bottom line, I suggest you bring a warm sweater, a healthy appetite and order something spicy and delicious. You won't regret it.
