Loved Francine Bistro. So much that it motivated me to write my first Yelp review. Food was innovative and delicious. Despite the modest length of the menu, we had difficulty deciding what to enjoy. Corn soup was amazing. Disappointed that we have reservations elsewhere tonight and can't go back. Will be back next time we are in town, no doubt.

Francine on my birthday was a huge surprise and a delightful evening which unfolded like a well made movie drawing us in and building in tasty, sensuous layer after layer. This restaurant is one of the 3 best I've ever been to and certainly a must-try in the state of Maine if you like real food. It's priced at the high end for this area but worth it and so wonderful. In an area where most restaurants offer a night where you don't have to cook though you could do better yourself in your own kitchen, Francine stands as a shining beacon of hope.

I must say, I agree with every review of this place. It is divine! I also fell that the wait staff is so glad you are there and they taste the food and know all about it and are honest and are just jazzed to tell you all about it. It isn't a job for them...it is a lifestyle of good food and perhaps a learning oppurtunity! I loved our waitress. Her name was Anna!! Hopefully, she will stay. It is ok if the menu changes but let's hope Francine and Anna remain together! As I said, the menu changes often but they have some "regular" stand bys such as Steak Frites. My husband was thrilled he could cut his steak with a fork and the fries, with garlic...excellent.They could have gone down a couple of "stories" of the garlic fry pile but otherwise, ok. The wine list was very nice and we had a lovely Merlot. One reviewer on yelp has her slogan as "shut up and eat " Let me say, do that at Francines no matter what the menu has to offer. I had beet salad with spicey soprasseta. I also had the special appetizer...are you ready? Chicken Liver Mousse. With toast points and pomegranite salad. IT WAS SO GREAT. The mousse came in a ramikin and it had carmelized onions, pepper and brown sugar on it. The mousse itself, below the crispy topping, was a tad peppery but oh so good. I will be dreaming about it. Hey, Chicken Livers may be fattening, but they have loads of iron in them and are good for you. Especially served in this fashion so SHUT UP AND EAT! The cocktail of the day sounded so crazy and good, but I would only have it if it was snowy outside. Sounds like a snowy cocktail. But, here is the recipe it was Gosling's Dark Rum, with Ginger Liquer and giner beer and cider. I think they called it Dark Storm. WOW! It would most likely knock your socks off. (it did snow, the next day! Who would have thought!) Anyhoo, we were too full for dessert, but we will be back another day!

Fun atmosphere. Casual elegance. My favorite place in town. Prices are eminently reasonable for what you are served. I like how the menu changes with time and there is always something new to try. The bar is lively and the cocktails are always interesting. The wine list is short but I appreciate the active curation and have always found something that I enjoy. I get excited about eating here and you will too if you try it.

Just had dinner this evening. Had the chicken liver bruschetta, interesting but awkward to eat, and shared the same day, line caught halibut, with baby clams, which was excellent. However I've had more relaxing meals in a fast food drive thru. Waiter was in a hurry, spouting off evening specials before I had my napkin in my lap, never asked if we were okay, clearly disinterested in our dining experience with sole purpose of flipping the table. Made special, out of the way, trip to go back since had great experience the first time, but tonight was a joke. Will not be back.

Dave and I were conducting some wedding reconnaissance in Camden last weekend and we were surprised to find this establishment tucked away from busy Commercial Street. Outdoor seating, white lights, and the delicious smells emanating from the front door were what pulled us to it. And the menu: small, full of fresh local ingredients, and a peak through the window are what finally forced us through the door. It was 9:00 and the kitchen, open to the wide bar top area, was still cranking out plates of steak frites, Pemaquid oysters, thick chops, lamb riblets, and rope-farmed mussels. The seating area is small, but nice for a romantic dinner, or a relaxing snack with a cocktail (pricey 'tails though, $11 ea). The atmosphere is cozy and warm with rustic decor, but contemporary ambient (and kind of loud) background music. Chip, at the bar, did a great job keeping us in there despite us not ordering any food. God, did I want to! The mussels looked divine, piled high, steamed from the direct heat of a cast iron pan, and flavored with lime, about 5 T of butter, and no garlic or covering to speak of. Chip stirred me up his daily infusion: blueberry gin. It was sweet and refreshing for a warm summer night. The menu, very short, is changed on a DAILY basis; so you always know it must come from the freshest available and local ingredients. The pricing for apps is in the teens with the entrees running upwards in 20s and 30s, but appear to be very worth each penny!

Having read numerous favorable reviews of this restaurant, my wife and I were looking forward to having dinner here. Unfortunately, when we arrived we were told our reservation did not exist. We were then told we were welcome to sit at the bar which we were happy to do. My wife sat down to a tower of fruit directly in front of her...lemons, limes, etc intended for use by the bartender. When we politely asked for the fruit to be moved, the bartender curtly replied, "no, I can't do that". When we explained that there was no room for a dish to be set in front of my wife he replied that he could move the fruit a few inches but no more. No apology was offered and at this point we got up and left. It may be unfair to give this restaurant one star but we would never go back.

We came to franciens bistro after my brothers graduation. Food was OK. Lots of garlic and butter! And small portions. Loved the atmosphere and our watered put up with the difficult members of our party really well. This place has a lot of unique food options... Fiddle head, ramp, dandelion salad. But it was so expensive and it wasn't awesome. I don't mind paying for a great meal but.. But I expected a bit better. Next time I'm in the area I won't go back. Beautiful place, nice atmosphere, nice people, but the food just didn't win me over

There hasn't been any reviews written since 2010, so I felt that there needed to be an updated one for folks to consider. I actually agree with both positive and negative reviews of this restaurant because i experienced both last evening with my wife. We had a reservation at 8pm, which we showed up five minutes before our reservation and were immediately seated. 15 minutes went by and we didn't even see wait staff. There was a couple that was seated 10 minutes after we were, and they were seen and their drink orders were taken. It's now 810pm, and I stopped a waitress and mentioned we would like to see someone so we can place an order. She was nice enough to put in a drink order and told our actual waitress that we were waiting for a while. My wife got her wine immediately, but we still didn't see our waitress until 820 to take our order. She told us that she didn't know this was her table, which was not true since the other waitress we stopped told her that we were waiting at 810. I didn't get my cocktail until 825pm. By that time, I was fuming, but I tried to be optimistic and blame this confusion all on miscommunication. My wife had the duck, which was wonderful. I had the steak frites, which I've had better. For their prices, you would hope you would have a fine dining experience, but unfortunately for me, this was not the case. At any rate, we did tip the waitress exactly 15%, which was generous in my opinion for such bad service. My hope is that the owner sees this and decides to hire someone who can manage the front end of the restaurant. This is their major pitfall, and if they want to continue to say they offer a $$$$ dining experience, all aspects of the experience must be taken into consideration. The food is fine. The service was terrible.

When I stopped by in the afternoon to inquire about a reservation that evening the place seemed very "cool". I was wary of how the evening would turn out. When we arrived for dinner they had the specific table we requested for our reservation waiting. A great beginning to a great meal. It has been about a month since we ate there so I do not remember each of the specific things that we had but I do remember that each dish, from the appetizers to the main course to the sides were great. I do remember that the fried chicken and the pickled Herring were excellent. The wine list had lots of fairly priced interesting wines. This restaurant is probably the gem of Camden.

Everything about this place was amazing from the hospitality to the desserts. It's a small comfortable bistro with a garden on the side and chickensin the back. We wanted lighter, healthier fare without going all health foody and we got exactly that for very reasonable prices. Fresh oysters with an indescribable exotic garnish and salmon tartare with avocado and tomato vinagraite, herbed frites, green beans with basil pesto and tiny potatos. And the desserts! We sampled three and almost teared up with pleasure. We've become jaded about eating out same-old food but wow!
(5)Jasmine K.
Lovely little restaurant. I can see why it is such a staple in the area. I had the carrot soup that was insanely good and my husband ordered the duck that was amazing. Loved the steak frites and mussels as well. Oh, and their cocktails were great too. I ordered the "Ginger Gin" and I would recommend it. My only complaint was it was very hot and buggy in the restaurant but I guess that comes with the territory.

We happened across this restaurant as we were searching for a fancy place to close out our stay and lucked out coming here. We sat at the bar as we didn't think to get a reservation, but I think that actually made the experience better. The bar service was great and we got to watch everyone else's food be prepared which was wonderful entertainment. Everything from drink list to apps to entrees to dessert were top notch in flavor and presentation. A bit on the pricey side but if you're looking for a fine dining experience in Camden, be sure to come here.
(5)Olga P.
The place is a way overrated. The wait is too long. We came on Tuesday night, around 8pm. After waiting for about 20-30 mins we were sitted at the bar. The bartender was the slowest. Had to wait for drinks, then - for bread basket. Then, the wait for food was so ridiculously long, we finally got it at 9pm, which more then an hour, taking in account we wanted to sit at the bar. we had to skip the desert coz we thought it would taje another hour to get it. Water had 0 ice cubes. We had 0 of water refils. The food was good, but its not worth waiting & treating like that. I believe, they need more people to work, like bas boys, who clean the tables & cut the bread, 2 bar tenders... For now, only 1 star for good food, otherwise it would be 0

Arriving late in Camden, we stumbled upon Francine Bistro entirely by chance as it was the only place that was still serving. If only we were always so lucky. From the fresh wildflowers adorning the tables, to the refreshing and perfectly mixed cocktails, to the savory meals made using local produce, it was easily one of the very best meals of the trip and the year.
(4)Addy T.
Amazing! I went here with my parent when we were on vacation. WOW! The food was fantastic. One of the best meals I have ever had. I had sweet pea risotto and grilled shrimp, and we shared an order of the garlic frites. The risotto was cheesy and hot and delicious. And the shrimp was also amazing. It was so good that, even though we were very full, we stayed for dessert. Very pricey but definitely worth every penny. I ABSOLUTELY want to go back!
(5)Rick S.
The drinks were very good, wine list needs a little work, menu was unique however my duck was over cooked and dry. The steak frites were greasy.

I'm a "local". I live in Camden and have eaten at Francine's Bistro A LOT. Last night we were a party of 6 with a reservation for 6:00pm, the first seating, just after the restaurant opens. I don't know what was wrong with the staff and kitchen yesterday but I can honestly say we had one of the worst restaurant experiences imaginable. For openers we had been seated for about 10 minutes before anyone even came over to the table. No water, no bread, no "hi glad to see you", just a number of waitresses scurrying around doing god knows what. When someone finally came by with water and the menus we hurried to place our drink orders. Again nothing. After about another 20 minutes the drinks started arriving one at a time over a period of another 15 minutes or so. Sensing something might be wrong we pressed the waitress to take our dinner orders and again settled down to wait. Bread finally came. Hallelujah! More waiting. About an hour into the ordeal the appetizers arrived with more bread. Again we wait. We finally got served 1 HOUR and 40 MINUTES after sitting down. The food was passable...just. It was clearly not up to the standards of Francine's in earlier days. The owner of Francine's has opened another restaurant in the town next door and spends a lot of time there. If someone doesn't get the service and food quality of Francine's back on track SOON it is in real danger of loosing its, for the moment undeserved, reputation as a fine place to eat. The locals are getting restless.

Wow what an amazing meal. The chef really knows what he is doing. The place is adorable, the staff very well trained and the food is AMAZING. Don't miss the calamari, Steak Frites, and the dates. The sauces are perfection and the ingredients all local. We asked the chef the secret to making such amazing food and we found that he catches some of his own fish and grows much of the food. This is a food lovers destination . Also try Shepard's Pie their sister restaurant. We loved it as well. I can't wait to go back next year for more.
(5)Eric H.
From the prompt and happy young waitress, to a perfect dinner that included a calamari salad, halibut for the main dish along with three unique veggie sides. They did not miss a beat. We also loved the small garden on the side and chickens in the back.
(5)Jim M.
Great but really needs Jim H managing full time again. He brings the atmosphere and the dining experience to "top notch". Food is great, atmosphere is adequate, service was robotic. They don't pamper their guests as in the past.
(2)Susan W.
only 3 stars because the poor service and insanely loud noise level takes away from the wonderful food they serve. so much so, we will not go back.
(3)Susan M.
Great food and drinks. Obnoxiously loud music. Left tonight because it was deafening.

Stayed at the fantastic Camden Harbour Inn, where we had fabulous lodgings, impeccable service and some great meals. However....in a boxy little 'storefront'-type building 2 or 3 streets away, we stumbled upon the wonder that is Francine. Felt as wondrous as Alice must have, when she fell down the rabbit hole. Stunningly fresh, absolutely local, definitely simple but also incredibly creative & subtle flavors and textures. Chefs that cook in a sparkling open kitchen right across the friendly bar where you might be lucky enough to score a ringside seat (there are tables, too...but not many in this small gem). Cozy little chocolate-colored dining room with 25 seats and simple decor. Genuinely warm and friendly service from people who you actually believe are glad you have come in, and know a lot about not only the local area, but also the craft of their food, wine and classic cocktails. So....miles away from the center of my midtown Manhattan universe, is a quietly twinkling little star called Francine. Aaaah, Francine... I go to sleep dreaming of this place, where I had the best 2 meals (went back twice!) & among the most enjoyable overall dining experiences that I have ever had in my life. As another NYC reviewer laments, the drive is a HAUL...so buy a ticket to Portland, ME on JetBlue during their fare sale, already!!! Take the 1-hr flight, stay a night in Portland, then rent a car, & drive to Camden. Plenty of great food, beauty and art (be sure to visit the Rockland Art Museum) all along the Portand - Camden route, by the way. Do NOT miss Francine when you get to cinematically picturesque Camden (the setting for the movie "Peyton Place"). I hope you'll dream of it, too.

I have eaten here a number of times and it is always very very good. Some food may be a bit salty for my taste but overall, no complaints. The chef has mad talent and creativity evident in not only the flavors but presentation as well. Waitstaff are pleasant and effective, though some may need a break, (from the entire restaurant biz) one can sense burnout just under the surface. Make a rez but they usually have room at the bar without one and Chip is awesome. Meticulous, but sweet, he has a magic touch with the libations. Ask him anything about wine, but make sure you have time for the answer. When I am ready for that creative cuisine and not just a meal out, this is where I go, and where you should too.

Very disappointing. Had reservations for 7. Arrived and asked if we would like to wait at bar. Said we would just wait. Next couple of 2 arrived and were seated immediately. We then looked at hostess and she seated us next to other couple. Three tables for two were all set. Service terrible. Food tasty and large portions. Bread did not appear and then was burned. Server told us chef likes it that way. Lamb riblets tough and had to be returned. Was comped but told by server that they are tough. Very long wait. Both other tables finished their entrees before we were served. Too many other good places in Midcoast to spend your money and time here

We drove up to Camden from NYC last Fourth of July and the hotel staff we stayed in (Inn at Ocean's Edge) suggested we eat at Francine's. It was the best meal we've had in a long time. It was a year ago so I don't remember much but I think I had pollock fritters and they were to die for. We chatted to a very nice couple sitting next to us who happened to be local - they couldn't have been bigger fans of the bistro. We just got back from Camden yesterday and we just had to eat at Francine's again. We reached out to the couple from last year and had dinner together on the 4th - it was amazing. This time, I remember that I had the farmer's salad (so clean and so fresh and oh-so-flavorful!) and the halibut (ah-mah-zing!). My boyfriend had the duck and he seriously could not stop eating it - it was the biggest duck breast I have seen. We shared the rhubarb crumble and it was delicious, too. The drive to Camden is quite a haul and we'd like to think we're coming back again next 4th of July weekend and if we do, you can bet that we're at Francine's for more than one dinner this time around.

In a word, "Superb" Cocktail, Superb! Raw Oysters with Smoked Crema, Champagne & Lime, Superb! Diver Scallops, Superb Garlicky Herb Frites, Superb Watercress Soup, Superb Belgian Endive, Red Pear Salad, Superb Chocolate Cake, Superb The staff, Superb! One of the best dining experiences I have ever had. When you combine great ingredients with attention to detail and focus, great things happen. Francine's is a great restaurant.
(5)Matt W.
Very good and creative food that could be excellent upon proper execution. Good beer and wine selection. Friendly and nice staff. Would be five stars except that they didn't ask us to leave and rather turned up the music full blast when we were the last people in the restaurant.

Let's begin at the end: what was with the waitress delivering the check in a NYC Greek diner paper coffee cup? The owner's idea of hip? Francine Bistro is many things--pleasantly furnished, popular, even roundly praised as one of the two best eateries on the midcoast--but hip it's not. It was a tacky close to a very good meal. The better news: My pork chop, at a reasonable $19, was the thickest I have seen and just pink enough, though empty and alone on the plate. Milady's roasted lobster dish hit the spot. The appetizers and the main courses came to the table as quickly as a tuna sandwich and Coke at a NYC diner. The waitresses tear around the room and the lower outdoor deck as if on speed, and ours finally showed some wear and tear, looking to me like Helen Hunt at the beginning and more like Harried Helen when she brought the paper cup. We never did figure out the band of frosted window glass at eye level preventing you from seeing out, but there must be a reason, and who's to argue with Francine Bistro's success.

This is another of Camden's serious restaurants, and it excels. Great care is evident in the kitchen, in the selection of the ingredients, and the careful service. The restaurant has been recognized in numerous writeups, and this reputation means that reservations would be a good idea, at least in the high season. The menu each night is only a few selections, chosen presumably by what can be done well given available options. The steak frites, a regular specialty, are wonderful, but a roasted chicken with an odd but wonderfully matched set of vegetables was just exemplary. Sadly, the portions were too large and our discipline inadequate to reserve room for what looked like wonderful desserts. The noise level was something younger patrons might relish, but for us it was almost too much ... diners at tables near us were almost shouting at each other to be heard, but probably we were the only ones who were bothered in this youngish crowd. Go for the food, be willing to wait while the staff manages at the peak time, and you will enjoy Francine.

All i can say is Steak Frites. LOVE

As always we based our visit on Yelp reviews and enjoyed an excellent meal. This was our first visit to Camden and we had no knowledge of restaurants. Solution whip out iPhone and check Yelp. The restaurant is on a quiet residential street. Reservations were booked solid, but outdoor seating was completely open which was surprising as it was such a beautiful evening. We started with a spinach soup and crab fritter appetizer which were both excellent. Same goes for the meal superb sauces accompanied the meal and wait staff was attentive and extremely knowledgeable. The only negative about the evening is the outdoor seating area is just average nothing special. The menu choices were limited , but multiple specials were available.
(5)barbara c.
The best meal I've had in a long time. So much care and talent put into this beautiful meal. My father wouldn't stop raving about the lamb riblet appetizer and halibut main course. I had the most wonderful roast lobster with fiddleheads, morel mushrooms, cous cous and pea tendrils. The lobster just melted in your mouth. For dessert a pucker inducing lime tart and melt in your mouth pot de creme. The bill was not cheap but it was worth it. I rate it higher than Primos.

After reading about Francine on tripadvisor and other review sites - my boyfriend and I were looking forward to our meal with great anticipation. We were not let down! We were running 20 minutes late and called to tell the restaurant - no problem. It is a small restaurant in 2 rooms - the first is the entry with a few tables and the bar the second room has about 12 more tables. There is also outdoor seating - we sat inside because it was HOT and HUMID that evening. The featured cocktail was awesome - something with grapefruit juice, rum, and home made raspberry sour mix. perfect on a hot night. our waitress was darling - very energetic, accommodating and provided GREAT suggestions. We started with the corn chowder and chanterelle mushroom soup and the lobster and green bean salad. both were exceptional and probably two of the culinary highlights of our week long visit to Maine. We had the halibut with fresh maine crab and stripped bass with eggplant for our main courses. We were pretty much full but the halibut with the cucumber relish and crab meat was so delicious we had to finish it. the downside was the bass - the dish was a complete miss. but we really didn't care because we were so full and the staff was so apologetic they removed it from our bill. We finished up with the butterscotch pot de creme - that did not suck. it was perfectly sweet with a touch of saltiness. Our amazing waitress gave it to us gratis along with both Armagnac and the Calvados because we couldn't decide which we preferred. Oh, the wine list was good too. Not too many options but a good variety with reasonable prices. Our waitress gave the perfect recommendation for our food choices. The atmosphere was friendly and mellow, some tourists, some locals. All around a wonderful experience. I give 5 stars even with the one strange entree because the staff response was so generous. Francine Bistro is a delight!
(5)Michal G.
My friends and I ate there on Sep 18, 2010 and it was a great experience!!! Food was so inventive and unique at the same time served in generous portions. Each of us ordered a different main course and we all shared passing plates around because everybody wanted to try everything. Service was very tentative and helpful. This is an extraordinary restaurant with very talented chefs. I couldn't stop myself from going to the kitchen and thanking these guys for an unforgettable dinner.

Francine Bistro is a fancy, expensive restaurant, and I really wish I had enjoyed it more than I did. I wasnt really blown away by the dishes ( I feel like I have much tastier options across the street at home in Cambridge) or the ambience, (the general crowd is mostly local and much older than us). The food, the service, the vibe, everything was just nice, and it's a lot to pay for just nice. Plus, I got a bad stomachache afterwards.

The drinks were very good, wine list needs a little work, menu was unique however my duck was over cooked and dry. The steak frites were greasy.

Great but really needs Jim H managing full time again. He brings the atmosphere and the dining experience to "top notch". Food is great, atmosphere is adequate, service was robotic. They don't pamper their guests as in the past.

Insanely delish! Wish this place was close by because we'd be regulars. Everything is so fresh. We had the halibut, which was perfectly roasted and the sauce was amazing. The corn soup - our kids LOVED it! The lobster - best one we've had on our trip. The beets with beet greens - WOW. The sauce was phenomenal and the perfect accent to the beet sweetness. Calamari salad. I loved this. It was unique and really tasty. We will be back and look forward to trying Chef Brian's other restaurant, Sherpherd's Pie!

Very impressive food and great wine selection.

We were a big party and everything was handled deftly. They were super busy but our server warned us from the outset things might be a bit slow but her pleasant attitude and the food made up for it. Cocktails were fabulous and fun and fresh. Appetizers were all loved and eaten so fast by those whose ordered sharing was not a possibility. The corn soup was a serious stand out- essence of fresh corn in a bowl. Entrees were also loved and shared thankfully. The swordfish seemed to win the day though the chicken was praised a lot too. One tip- remember they are very busy in the summer. Make a reservation and be prepared to enjoy your meal in a relaxing way. There is no need to rush here.

Top notch food and flavors along with a very inviting staff here at Francines. The muscles with pine browned butter were amazing! The muscles were perfectly plump--not dried out or too small like you get at a lot of seafood restaurants. They make their own bread and it's excellent as well. The greens were full of flavor perfectly cooked--a mix of swiss chard, kale, etc. The star of the show thought was the roasted parsnips with chili oil and yogurt. I've never been so excited to eat a vegetable in all my life. This dish was something special and I only wish I could eat it again...and again. We sat at the bar afterwards and the bartender, Chip, was a very cool guy. Actually we had stopped by for a drink here the previous night wanting to escape our B&B doldrums and were enticed to come back by chip. He makes excellent cocktails and was a very friendly guy to talk to--not like most bartenders who seem to busy or too cool to talk to you in Boston. The kept giving us small tastes of other foods while we sat at the bar, seeing that we were genuinely enjoying our experience there. That lead us to talk to one of the sous chefs in the open kitchen, who was extremely cool as well. Finally, we decided to go to their other restaurant the next night in Rockport (Shepherd's Pie) and we were equally impressed. They have a good thing going here at these restaurants in Camden and Maine in general. We'll be back for sure...

I didn't expect to find a restaurant of this caliber on my trip. It was actually recommended by a waiter from another restaurant. Everything we ate/drank was delicious and the service was attentive. We started with a dark & stormy (and it had an extra kick of ginger which was awesome) and the tequila/grapefruit juice cocktail. For an appetizer we had the liver bruschetta, and I can not say enough about how well it was prepared. For entrees, we ordered the duck and the ribs. Both were equally amazing. The meat was falling off the bone on the ribs, and was incredibly tender. The sauce was extremely well prepared as well. The duck was sliced breast served over grits. The grits were a tad flavorless, but that was completely made up for by the delicious sauce and impeccably prepared duck. If I am ever back in the area, I will definitely come here again. The prices were also quite reasonable for the quality of the food.

We dined there last February 2013 during the huge blizzard. I simply forgot to post my review. This place is amazing. Very creative menu. Everything we had was perfect. You will love it.

Seems like this place has excellent food, but unfortunately I didn't make it that far. As a solo diner I was seated at the bar, which was ok by me, but the spot was in their prep area and I would have preferred to wait for a full seat. I waited 25 minutes before the bartender took my drink order - the gin ginger was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, the bartender wasn't very attentive and after nearly an hour with no one to take my meal order I decided to leave. The food did look nice though. I recommend to skip this place if you're alone or without a reservation. The bar service is just too slow. Comida down the street was awesome. The waterfront was also good for a casual meal. The drink I had was great and I imagine that the food is too, but for me the service is part of the experience.

Wow if you are in the area, please don't miss Francine. I think the mood of the restaurant and the evening was set while I was inquiring about a reservation, I asked about the dress code. The waitress immediately replied "Just wear clothes." So the restaurant is a very nice, small and romantic place. Best to make a reservation as there is limited seating. Just a little disclaimer, the menu is a daily menu so some items I had might not be on the menu you receive. To start out, my GF and I had crab meat with sea urchin. Wow very fresh crab meat. I have never had sea urchin before and it tasted great. A lot like a clam or oyster. My main dish was Steak Frites. The steak was cooked fantastic, just melted in your mouth. The frites also had a great flavor. My GF went with rabbit. Another dish I have never had before. The rabbit was very good and tender. A very romantic place and a must visit if you are anywhere near Camden.

I love the ambiance. It's noisy and fun. The food is pretentious and poorly thought out. It's far too expensive for the quality. The service was ok but my meal came out 15 minutes before my wife's. The same happened at the next table. The server clearly did not want to know what we thought of the food. It's an ok place, fun but expensive and don't expect much of the food.

Very surprised to find a restaurant of such high caliber here... It really is a great find and if you are a bit of a foodie you should most definitely try it... We ate here 2 nights out of 3; the food was interesting, innovative and reasonably priced and the staff are friendly and courteous. Cocktails were interesting and some had local vodka/gin... and they tasted great... If we had any complaints it was that they seemed very busy and maybe a little overwhelmed (it took a while to get our drinks for example) and that the tables for 2 are too close together offering no privacy... We would highly recommend Francine and would not hesitate to return.

Hand down best seafood meal we've ever had and we eat out quite a bit at Boston's finest restaurants as well as on the Cape, amazing service (we were there on sat aug 17th, I wish I had gotten our server's name but she was just wonderful- tall pretty girl with lovely hazel eyes, in case management is reading this, perhaps this might help you identify her), exceptionally well priced- cocktails, appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, after dinner espresso, and 2 side dishes to go (because we didn't want our meal to end!) for $105. I mean c'mon. We had BBQ shrimp appetizer, my husband had lobster tail, I had the halibut (all three dishes were unbelievable, perfectly cooked, exceptional flavors, beautiful presentation),I had the peach cobbler for dessert (probably best dessert I've ever had), my husband had the dessert special (fresh berries with balsamic- so very very good), the after dinner espresso was perfectly brewed, and dinner cocktail was excellent too (vodka, st germain, citrus, etc- very very nice) we both agreed, we'd drive up 3-4 hours from boston just to have another meal like that at Francine. Bill from Castleview by the Sea Inn recommended the restaurant and we can't thank him enough. He runs a great B&B btw- a truly delightful experience!

Food was out of this world - BBQ Duck was by far my favorite. It was not BBQ like with BBQ sauce.. but a fully smoked and complex preparation that I will dream about for a looong time. Also tried a few of their sides - amazing. Out waitress was knowledgeable, friendly, and fast! I hope I make it back to Camden sometime.
(5)Jon E.
The highest point of a great trip to Camden. Casual, fun and grown up. Unusual menu. Excellent duck breast and corn soup, but the roasted corn and mushroom side dish stole the whole show. Chip, the bartender, knew his stuff and made the night perfect. Lived up to every recommendation from friends.

Never eat here if you have any type of food allergy. I have a severe allergy to fish, and the waitress and manager were completely unaccommodating. I understand that it is difficult to find places to eat on the coast with such an allergy, but the menu did not have an exorbitant amount of seafood, no more than any other restaurant, and I've never had a problem at any restaurant to this extent before. The waitress told me there was absolutely nothing they could do to make sure that my food wouldn't be contaminated with fish- absolutely nothing. She just stared at me blankly, and when I said that I couldn't eat there if they wouldn't at least try to avoid cross-contamination (since my allergy is deadly) she went to get her manager then returned without her manager (who I guess was too busy to come speak to us) and repeated the same thing. Usually a restaurant will tell me what I can and cannot eat, and I am very flexible to choose even the one item that might be cooked separate from fish (at most restaurants as nice as Francine's, though, they will often just pull out another pan to cook my food in), but she said there was absolutely nothing on the menu that would be safe. I have never had such a terrible experience, and ended up having to leave since it was not safe to eat a single item on the menu for me.

From the prompt and happy young waitress, to a perfect dinner that included a calamari salad, halibut for the main dish along with three unique veggie sides. They did not miss a beat. We also loved the small garden on the side and chickens in the back.

(2)Susan W.
only 3 stars because the poor service and insanely loud noise level takes away from the wonderful food they serve. so much so, we will not go back.
(3)Susan M.
Great food and drinks. Obnoxiously loud music. Left tonight because it was deafening.
(3)Marci C.

(5)Prachie J.
(3)Jasmine K.
(4)Petro P.
(5)Julia G.

Wow - what else can I say except that the food was delicious! Well, I guess I can say more... in the grand panoply of restaurants, there are some that are horrible, lots that can be described as somewhere on the mediocre scale, and then there are a certain few restaurants which can be described as gourmet. A cut above. The creme de la creme. The kind of restaurants that attract foodies and those with discriminating tastes. Not everyone appreciates gourmet restaurants and that's OK... if you aren't into gourmet flavors, you're on a budget, or in a hurry, then maybe mediocrity is appropriate. But if you're really into food, then you'll be looking for a gourmet-class restaurant and Francine's is definitely in this category. I don't remember details too well, so I won't attempt to describe what I ate. I'll just leave you with the impression that if you are a foodie, then you will like Francine's. Final note: So many people have issues with gluten these days that I always include a note about it in my reviews. Francine's is sensitive to the GF crowd. We did not have any trouble finding some excellent GF options. The only nit I'll pick is that some GF bread or rolls would have been nice. The waitress brought out some regular bread for our 2 daughters who are OK with gluten. The 3 of us with GF issues just stared at it, salivating...
(5)Vee J.
Service was excellent, but the food wasn't as "out of this world" as many other reviewers have noted. Don't get me wrong: the food was perfectly fine and I would absolutely go back. I think I was just expecting more from Francine based on all of the glowing reviews people have given it.
(4)Barbara H.
Disappointed - the Beef Carpaccio was Smothered in Thick Parm Shavings.. Loving the dish, I expected to taste it :/ .. Asking for help I asked for more Carpaccio & got a second helping of the same?!? Lots of cheese.. Hubby's Chicken was terrific..We ate later @ night/ service was OK.. Hmm
(2)Geoff And Jenni G.

We have been to Francine Bistro two times now. It is important to note the first time we came was in the off-season (February) and we came back again last week at the height of tourist season (August). The first time we had dinner here I was totally impressed by the food, service and atmosphere. I had the local chicken, while my boyfriend had a crab risotto. Both spectacular dishes! The service was great and we had a wonderful time. When we came back last week, I was disappointed. We had made reservations and it was busy, as expected. We had to wait a bit for our table, which was totally fine. We started out with the oysters, which were amazing! They had a wonderful smoked haddock crema and tomato mignonette, delightful! For my main course I ordered the herb roast lobster with local veggies. It was $32, which is pricey, but I assumed I would be blown away by this local down east meal. I was not. It was simply lobster with some good local veggies, but the meal itself was not substantial. I did not taste much of the "herb roast" on the lobster and the veggies along with the lobster were sparse. It was good, but not $32 good. For dessert, my brother I and decided to split the local berries with mascarpone and honey. It was $8. For $8 all we got was a tiny dish of some blueberries and a few strawberries and a dime sized dollop of mascarpone. I was expecting for $8 a little more berries and a lot more creativity with the dish, completely underwhelming. The service was average, but nothing exceptional ,which was disappointing given our previous experience. All in all, I was disappointed this time around. I appreciate the passion for local cooking, and high quality local ingredients, Francine just missed the mark this time around.

NOT up to Expectations This place was an absolute madhouse. Not only wasn't there an empty seat in the house but those with reservations, like moi, were crowding the front door sheepishly waiting to be called to the table. While waiting we ambled around back to visit with the chickens in the pen near the back door. They were plump and appeared healthy but cast a suspicious glance in our direction as if wondering what we were doing there. "Scott!" the hostess called and finally it was out turn. We responded eagerly and were soon seated at a table facing the kitchen. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful, sharing with us the restaurant's most popular dishes along with her personal favorites. We started with the corn soup which was absolutely amazing. Easily a five star offering. Amy chose the chicken and I selected the steak which was advertised as one of the restaurants signature dishes. Amy later learned that the chicken she would be dining on had, just the day before been socializing with the ones we had visited out back just minutes earlier. Life is short we agreed but at least she knew it would be fresh. Sadly the corn soup was the highlight of the evening. The chicken arrived under cooked and had to make a return trip to the kitchen. My steak was a bit average & chewy. The frittes (fries) that accompanied the steak, however, were terrific. Francine's is noisy & crowded which is typically a great sign. While I only rate this visit 3.5 stars I would definitely give it another try the next time I am in the area.

5 stars just isn't good enough- I need more stars! After eating here I am now seriously ruined for any other eating establishment. We were a party of 6 and therefore got to sample a great many of the dishes and all were superb in flavor and presentation. The flavors were amazing and indescribably good. I sampled the following: the asparagus salad, pemaquid oysters in champagne sauce, "devils on horseback" which were cheese stuffed dates with bacon (do not miss this one), garlicky herb frites, roast halibut with crab gazpacho, and roast lobster with an amazing sauce. We shared 3 desserts, all of which were fantastic. There just aren't enough superlatives to describe the meal. One of the best dining experiences ever!
(5)Franklin S.
Dinner was delicious, I had the lobster and it was amazing. My friend had the steak frites and again, amazing. Highly recommended.

Went there for dinner with friends and totally enjoyed the whole experience at Francine's Bistro. The wine selection was great and they had a few special cocktails on the drink menu that sounded great. We had the two special apps which were both great. One was frittes with foe gras and a garlic sauce & the other was a crab mix on crisps. For dinner we had the black fish dish, butternut tortellini and the signature ribs. We all loved our meals. Dessert was apple crisp and chocolate torte and they were also great. If you sit at or near the bar you can watch the chef's prepare the food and everything is made fresh with fresh ingredients. I highly recommend this place. We thoroughly enjoyed the service and eclectic atmosphere as much as the creative menu which changes daily. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food and service.

The year was 2007. A Friday evening, Francine's was closing at 9:00pm. Pouring rain. A five and one half hour drive from Comnecticut racing up an early summer-packed Route 1 to make a boat delivery. I made it in to Francine's Bistro to enjoy my maiden experience of her steak frites. The steak frites with which all others have been compared since. Fast forward to August 2012 and not much has changed. A stiff 10-15 knot breeze, 2-4 foot seas and a sun low on the horizon. Salty spray crusting on hair. The waves pounding under the hull as the vessel careens toward land. All for a two our meal at Francine's Bistro. A ridiculous journey always seems to be involved in getting there. Maybe it is the journey to get this food. Maybe it's the small house tucked away under a tree on a side street in Camden. Maybe its the farmhouse decor with large open kitchen. Maybe its the professional service. It could be the chill bar and energetic music. Maybe its the thrill of not having a reservation and hoping for the best. Just the possibility of waiting at the patio or bar for a table is mouth watering. Local halibut, pan seared atop a bed of leeks. Mussels, smoked pine, chilli pepper burned butter Rope grown mussels, pine, lime, black butter, sea salt. Sreak frites with fried fresh herbs Steak frites: pan roast of coulotte steak, garlicky herb frites. Local halibut, littlenecks, tabouli, parsley sauce. Fresh tomato, burrata and lobster salad with a lemon dressing and crisp. Corn cream soup sweet corn soup, chanterelles, basil. Who comes up with this stuff, seriously? It's all as good as it sounds and you can have it if you can get a reservation .

We are big fans of this spot. It's a once maybe twice a year occasion that we make it up to Maine, yet we always stop by Francine's at least once. Francine's is comforting and yet complex, beautiful food. Their herbed lobster is delicious and always perfectly cooked. (I have a low tolerance for overlooked foods, particularly seafood. C'mon get it right! Here, they do.) The ribs have great flavor from a spice-packed dry rub, and then they finish it with a lip-smacking honey marinade. Oh and the meat falls off the bone. The pan roasted chicken has a rich and tangy taste and comes out incredibly juicy. As for the appetizers, the chicken liver bruschetta, asparagus slivers salad, the devils on horseback, and tuna(?) tartare were all winners. And then there's dessert. Ahhhhh so good! Once you sit down, check to see if they still have the marscapone with aged balsamic over fresh strawberries left. This dish is epic and simple at the same time. Say no to sharing. ;) The parsnip cake with honey walnut(?) ice cream has a really nice balance and crunch. And then there's the sesame ice cream that comes with the chocolate torte (which looked a lil too chocolately and decadent for the moment, so I ordered the ice cream separately). Also a "do not share" dessert. The ice cream is velvety, but the star is the sesame brittle crumble--going to try to make some at home. We'll be back!
(5)Babak G.
Honestly no stars. I have never seen such a snobby service anywhere. The hostess completely ignores you, they treat you as if they are doing you a favor & they just think they are the best thing happened to eating after sliced bread. I would suggest they get out of their small enclave & go to some other places who happen to have a few Michelin stars after their name to see how they still treat everybody with minimum courtesy this business is used to. I don't even care if they serve the best food this side of the Atlantic.

We ate at Francine Bistro recently and it was fantastic! The food was great. They have a great menu with many new and unique dishes to try. The atmosphere was very "cool" and laid back, with great music in the back ground. I have to say they are also probably the cleanest restaurant I've ever been in! We stayed late, so we saw them cleaning (as you can see the kitchen from the bar where we sat) and they clean EVERYTHING! Also, Chip the bartender knows his stuff, and is super helpful!
(5)Rich D.
Every time I am up in the Camden area, I make it a point to stop in. The food is fantastic and the menu is always different. It can get busy so I recommend making a reservation, otherwise you may have a long wait.
(5)Barbara C.
Interesting meal. Went on NY Eve for a price fixed menu. The food was interesting. Even with the limited choices enjoyed most of what I had. I'm not a seafood eater so went with all the non seafood choices. Would love to go back again for the regular menu.
(5)Dee F.
Unique and delicious food from a continuously changing daily menu. We had pork ribs and black puttanesca that was wonderful. Service and atmosphere were great!
(5)Gerard S.
A new favorite. I had eaten here last year, but didn't write a review as I was uncertain of my opinion. This was perhaps influenced by the intrusive person next to me at the bar, too my taste might just have been off. Nonetheless, this time I was so impressed that I went back a second time. This was quite a compliment as the Camden - Rockland area has a number of terrific, and reputedly terrific restaurants. The preparations reminded me somewhat of Nudel in Lenox, which is my favorite (I drive fifty miles each way each week to eat there.) The owner-chef combines local ingredients in imaginative ways and cooks them to perfection. One fiddlehead dish was served with snail butter as the fiddles resemble snails. It worked, as did the stinging nettles. Pemaquid oysters were combined with smoked mussel creme and tomato (very light) mignonette. This latter violated my preference for bare oysters, but was well worth it. The local scallops served with spring dug parsnips, caramelized orange and zaatar elicited both a "Wow" and an "Oh my god". If you can splurge, the Chassagne and Meursault Dom. Terres de Velle are well worth their under double retail price. The bartender unfortunately was just filling in for the regular. I say "unfortunately" as I won't be the beneficiary of her delightful, competent service next time - which will be much sooner than I would have anticipated.

A great, cozy 4-Star restaurant (perhaps even 4.5 stars). Excellent food and great service. We were a party of six (including kids). We all had a great meal. If you are in Camden, I strongly recommend a visit. We tried: Corn soup - outstanding...truly exceptional. Mussels - very good; unusual; cooked in a skillet with pine needles; great smoky flavor. Dates - baked with cheese and chorizo; very unusual and excellent. Calamari Salad - good, tasty, not great. Steak Frites - oustanding! Sensational dish worth trying. Risotto - excellent; very flavorful. Duck - AMAZING; one of our favorite dishes; unusual and excellent. Pork Ribs - out of this world; awesome combination of flavors. Halbut - average; not great. Excellent service, and an all around great experience. One of the finest restaurants we tried in all of Maine!

(5)Cindy W.
We dined there last February 2013 during the huge blizzard. I simply forgot to post my review. This place is amazing. Very creative menu. Everything we had was perfect. You will love it.
(5)Trevor M.

(5)Greg W.
(3)Caitlin L.
(4)Janeen Y.

Every time I am up in the Camden area, I make it a point to stop in. The food is fantastic and the menu is always different. It can get busy so I recommend making a reservation, otherwise you may have a long wait.

Interesting meal. Went on NY Eve for a price fixed menu. The food was interesting. Even with the limited choices enjoyed most of what I had. I'm not a seafood eater so went with all the non seafood choices. Would love to go back again for the regular menu.

Unique and delicious food from a continuously changing daily menu. We had pork ribs and black puttanesca that was wonderful. Service and atmosphere were great!

Service was excellent, but the food wasn't as "out of this world" as many other reviewers have noted. Don't get me wrong: the food was perfectly fine and I would absolutely go back. I think I was just expecting more from Francine based on all of the glowing reviews people have given it.

Hmm

(5)Addy T.
(2)Jim M.
Great but really needs Jim H managing full time again. He brings the atmosphere and the dining experience to "top notch". Food is great, atmosphere is adequate, service was robotic. They don't pamper their guests as in the past.

Also a "do not share" dessert. The ice cream is velvety, but the star is the sesame brittle crumble--going to try to make some at home. We'll be back!

Service was excellent, but the food wasn't as "out of this world" as many other reviewers have noted. Don't get me wrong: the food was perfectly fine and I would absolutely go back. I think I was just expecting more from Francine based on all of the glowing reviews people have given it.

Hmm

Food is always great and the drinks are the best.
