Total transformation! The new owners have completely changed up this hotel and it's such a great addition to the town. The restaurant is gorgeous, the food is absolutely divine, and the live music is awesome. The rooms are spacious and the beds are super comfortable. Can't wait to go back for brunch by the fireplace.

This place is so underrated. I've never seen a hotel or inn with a nicer layout. They have a jacuzzi tub which you can reserve, not a lot of people seem to realize that. It also has a gym which is nicer than almost every other gym I've seen in hotels in my lifetime. It's a cute little place and their restaurant is actually really nice as well. It's a quicker drive from Boston than you'd expect and well worth it too. It's my go to place for a little winter getaway in Maine.

The Inn was spotless, beautiful and we enjoyed being there very much. The breakfast was nice as well. We attempted to dine in restaurant without success. We ordered drinks and then waited 45 minutes for appetizers and entrees that never arrived. No one checked on us during that time and when we saw other patrons who arrived after we did, being served, we decided it was time to leave. We were deeply disappointed in the service and never did get to enjoy a meal there. The guitar player/singer was fun and managed to take our minds off our hunger for a little while.

We loved this place. New, impeccably clean, tastefully done. Independently owned with a really nice fitness facility ( better than chain hotels ive been to - each cardio station w/HDTV) actual free wifi Internet and a nice included breakfast w/eggs or waffles cooked to order. We didn't eat at the restaurant (10 Water) at night but prices looked quite reasonable. Bedding was extremely comfortable and staff was friendly and well trained. We'll definitely come back and recommend. Probably really cozy in the winter too.

While I loved staying at the inn, my experience at the restaurant was not a top reason. The staff has several things to work on here, including improving the flavors on the menu. We had the brick oven pizza, which was absolutely nothing special. Also ordered several tapas, each of which was sprinkled with the same balsamic vinegar...and made with the same overly sweet pastry dough. So, the restaurant has some work to do, but the inn is fantastic!!!

Worst hotel experience of my life! My husband and I along with my in-laws had planned a week long trip to Maine that included two night stay at this hotel. We booked our room 3 mts in advance through a third party but made a change directly with the hotel a week in advance to arrive a day later and were assured there would be no problem. When it came time to check in we were told they had no record of the change and since they failed to change the arrival date we were charged for the room and told it was booked to someone else. The hotel was sold out due to it being one of the busiest weekends. Holly, at the front desk said since there was no record there was nothing they could do. They pretty much put us out on the curb and sent us to the Hampton Inn in the town of Bath. I asked to speak to a supervisor about a refund I was told no one was available because the booking manager was out camping and the GM was unavailable. Holly said someone can call me in five days. I was disappointed and we were inconveniencing our family because we only had one car rental for the week. My husband demanded to have the issue resolved and finally about an hour later Holly spoke to the clerk that changed our reservation back to the original date after I had made the change and was assured it would be no problem. Since they verified it was their error they did pay for our stay at the Hampton Inn. We specifically planned Daniel Stone because it was unique to the area and unfortunately that experience was taken from us. I will say that the Hampton Inn was wonderful and located on the river in the quaint town of Bath not far away. It was spotless and the service was wonderful. I would not recommend Daniel Stone, they seem to be very unorganized and lacking in customer service. They ruined what would have been a perfect trip. Had they researched the error from the beginning instead of Implying that I never called it would have saved a lot of heartache and stress.

Just last week, We adventured 3 hours north to the Brunswick, ME area and on day 2 of our stay I had taken advantage of a groupon deal for the Captain Daniel Stone Inn. The deal included a one night stay in a king bedroom with a $25 credit toward dinner at the Inn's Restaurant called 10 Water Street. The service at the desk was very friendly. Nicole checked us in, and what a nice personality. Check in was 3pm, but Nicole let us get in there an hour earlier, which was nice of her. The room was fantastic, and we loved it. Everything was clean, comfy bed, and it had one of those nature sounds alarm clock radio's - which we used to fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean waves. We had made a reservation for dinner at 10 Water Street at 5pm. I got their signature burger which was great in portion with good flavor. We got an order of 12 chicken wings for like $3.48 and they were scrumptious and crunchy. My wife got the whiskey and apple brined pork chop, and she really liked it. The prices - very fair, the portions good, service - very friendly. We are definately coming back - the whole scene is a great take, and we would gladly spend more money apart from a Groupon deal to come back here! I should also say in closing, that the complimentary breakfast was a nice big spread with plenty of options and the coffee was fantastic! Good looking out Captian Daniel Stone Inn!! I am giving you 4 stars easy!!

Absolutely incredible! The staff was extremely welcoming and accommodating. The rooms were luxurious - complete with bathrobes. The food was sublime - the lobster roll cut no corners, the picanté burger was amazing, and they even added a twist to the popcorn at the bar by tossing it in a pan with bacon. The breakfast - which consisted of well rounded number of options from pastries to yogurt and granola - was held in a well lit area upstairs and was a very peaceful, wonderful way to start the day. Do yourself a favor if you're heading up to Brunswick (and you should be, as it really is a lovely area) and make a reservation at The Daniel.

Loved it here. This is probably the last hotel in New England who still has actual keys to your room. Gorgeous staircase in the main lobby. Nice landscaping and lots of parking. Beautiful location, updated rooms, brand new hot tub and sauna in the private spa rooms downstairs. The bathrobes are a really nice touch. Staff is friendly and helpful....even at 3 am when you're drunk and looking for a microwave. I sure hope to come back one day.

The hotel and restaurant were absolutely superb! My husband and I stayed here for our 5 yr anniversary. I have never met such a friendly, professional staff in all of my travels. The service was impeccable. They were incredibly courteous and attentive to our needs. The staff even treated our dog as a pampered guest! The decor was perfect- upscale cottage feel with all the necessary amenities. Our wheelchair accessible room was spacious, clean. We loved the decor so much that we even took a few pics for design inspiration for our home! And oh my goodness - the restaurant was fabulous! We had room service one night and ate at the restaurant for our anniversary dinner the next. The food was seriously five star. Everything was perfectly cooked with amazing flavors. The menu includes unique dishes along with traditional ones with unique twists. The chefs, Mike and Ryan, have serious culinary expertise! I told them it was our anniversary and they prepared a wonderful meal, a special off menu main dish to suit my vegetarian tastebuds, a wonderful scallops and pork belly dish for the hubby, and a mixed dessert plate with a happy anniversary wish in chocolate writing across the plate. Our server, Darian, was incredibly sweet and attentive. We will definitely return!

I really wanted to like this place, BUT, I'm afraid I didn't have the "superb" experience that everyone seems to be raving about. The best part was the entrance into the hotel lobby and promises a grand room, but does NOT deliver. And this is all OK, if you're looking for an OK stay, but I was very much expecting a B&B experience since I was paying B&B prices. I paid $465.00 for only a two night stay in mid-September during the off season. At the very least give us poor saps a hearty breakfast and a spotless room. The breakfast was continental and had slim picking on the last hours. I've had on the par experiences or better at Hampton Inn's or Motel 6's at less the costs by hundreds. I found the other reviews to on here to be misleading, if you read these you'll be underwhelmed. If you're an out-of-towner looking for a great B&B on the East Coast skip this place, staying at a hotel chain will give you the same experience. Instead go to The Reluctant Panther in Vermont, that place was so cool and beyond my expectations. I think I paid less, but it was two years ago. That's if you get a choice of where in the Northeast you could stay. The Daniel had no outside area like a patio and the balcony in the room was locked up. There was a nice restaurant downside with a real polite and cordial crew and we did get a free appetizer since we were staying at the hotel. There are bikes available to get around town, but you're close enough to walk. Walking in the area is great - lots of fresh air and stars shining in the sky. One of the biggest pains was there never seemed to be anyone at the front desk when you needed them. When we checked in and checked out we were met by no one at the front desk. It's nice having the convenience of automatic check out at hotels, but this place only has metal keys and so we thought we had to hand them over. So we hung around long after we wanted go waited for the front desk person to take the keys. We gave up and decided they'd figure it out if we just left the keys there. However, we ran into the clerk as we were walking out and let her know we left the keys on the counter. She was really frazzled and asked us to come back so she could check up on what car we drove. I guess she so an unusual amount of cars in the parking lot and needed to get some towed. We obliged, not like we needed to wait around more, but we were just being nice. In fact, her request made absolutely no sense considering we were leaving and never coming back again so she wasn't going to see our car ever again. Then, from here it become a most unusual and awkward experience. Then, she forgot about why she asked us over and instead pulled my check-out slip saying I needed to settle my bill. I said "oh, i noticed I was charged already." I didn't say anything about it pending or being cashed because it was still the weekend so I wasn't expecting it to go through yet. Then, she went into a whole thing about, oh it's authorized not charged, blah, blah, blah, waste of our time. Then, she asked if I wanted a receipt, which is what I thought I was looking at and I said no. Then, she asked if I wanted the thing I was looking out (check-out slip, maybe) and I said no. Not once did she ask about the car. Strange bird, indeed. My husband thought that when we got there, but now he was even more sure about her awkwardness. I think I should plaster experienced travel on my forehead to spare the condensing schooling on how credit cards work. Another point about this major inconvenience is that even if you call the front desk to check to see if anyone's down there, there's no point because no one will answer and you could pretty much guess no one will be down there if you bother, but that leaves you calling like a frantic jealous bf/gf, however, if someone does answer, then, chances are you'll have to go down to get the keys for the sauna, etc., etc. Just a major waste or time. A thing about the Daniel is that they have a private sauna and hot tub that your party could use. So no one has to share this space with strangers. Overall, it was too expensive and you won't be sure what your paying for, it wasn't the cleanest, the workout room looked plentiful of machines (new ones, too), continental breakfast was o.k., great live music at Coast, free appetizer, free bikes, some strange staff members, close to town, free parking for hotel guests, no outdoor space, no B&B feel, rooms were plain and small, our bed had a bad squeak, and room balcony didn't open BOTTOM LINE: you can do much better for the price I paid almost anywhere else. Definitely not worth 5 stars hotel.

Lauren & Darien rule! Excellent food and happy specials, and the name can't be beat :)

What a nice place to stay! It's very nice, quaint and in a great location close to town but tucked away. The rooms were very nice, clean, new decor and charming. This hotel is perfect for a New England stay.
(5)Bryan D.
The worst part of this hotel is there is nothing around. You can walk to main street, which has a couple good breakfast and lunch places and then... a college? I just don't think this place is worth the money given that there is nothing around. The restaurant is OK but VERY over prices. The chicken wings were reheated, dry on the inside and soggy on the outside. While you're having a nice peaceful meal they're wheeling loud racks of sheet pans down the hallway right next to you with everything banging around. The rooms are nice but with the AC in the window, facing the highway, a lot of noise comes through the are around the AC. They did have a great fitness room. Oh and the breakfast is eh. Most disappointing part is the yogurt they have in mason jars is tart yogurt. Biggest morning letdown ever.

I loved my stay at the Daniel. The hotel staff were super nice and attentive. They gave us great advice when we checked in that we should go ahead and reserve the hot tub/sauna room (so make sure to reserve when you check in). And that was magnificent and perfect for enjoying after running a half marathon. And it's in it's own room, so it's quiet! That was fantastic. The rooms were very nice and comfortable. I didn't notice any noise from outside the room. And the included breakfast was very nice too. A good spread for a continental breakfast. I would definitely stay here again. The only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is the restaurant. Stay away from it except for happy hour. We made the mistake of eating there twice. The food itself was ok, but it took forever and was cold when it came out. For lunch on Saturday, we were only 1 of 2 tables in there. We got there at 1pm. I ordered the french dip, then 10 minutes later was told they were out. I asked how long it would take to do the pizza as we had the hot tub reservation at 2. I was told 8-10 minutes. My friend's food (steamed mussels) came out at about 140. My food finally came out at 157 so I had to ask him to box it. I didn't get a chance to eat it until 3 and it was so greasy and of course stone cold that I couldn't even stomach more than a couple of bites. All I had to eat for lunch was some of my friend's kale chips (which were awesome) and a couple of bites of her bread. Did I mention I had ran a half marathon right before that? So I was absolutely starving. I ended up drinking 3 cokes to get some calories in me so I wouldn't get sick. We wisely chose to eat out for an early dinner. For Sunday Easter brunch we went in as walk ins at 11. We got our food at 1245. Yes it was busy, and yes we were on the walk in side, but walk-ins who came in after us got their food and paid their bill before we got our food. Besides an hour and 45 minutes to get your food? I honestly think they either lost our ticket or forgot to pick it up and it sat there a long time, and it wasn't until we asked at 1230 how much longer as we had to get on the road to get to the airport that we finally got our food. It was cold. I got the french toast, and I made it through half before I couldn't stomach anymore. It was so cold and a little congealed and did not taste good. Both times the person taking care of us (I think he was the bartender) at first seemed nice but then seemed put out that we were asking about our food. Would never eat at their restaurant again (except going down and getting drinks and kale chips for happy hour), but would definitely stay at the hotel again without a hesitation.

I hate hotels. I usually find a place on VRBO just so it can feel a little more like home and a little less like a room you need to cover in plastic bags just to feel clean.* However, I was making a one day trip to Brunswick and needed a place to stay that was, at least by e-ppearances, not disgusting. Enter my new friend, Captain Daniel Stone. I don't know who he is or why he is a Captain, but he makes a pretty nice hotel. This is a true inn and feels more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. The rooms are spacious and very clean and the staff is helpful and friendly. There is free WiFi and I never once felt the need to disinfect anything inside the room.** There is plenty of parking around back and the small inn has a very nice gym that looks like it hasn't been used, ever. The bed was comfortable and the top comforter did not need to be immediately laid on the ground.*** Captain Daniel Stone Inn has a restaurant and bar inside, but is also an extremely easy walk to the town. If you are planning a trip to Bowdoin or just to Brunswick, the accommodations with my boy, Capt'n DS, are well worth the price. Did I mention it is also very clean? _________________________ * Alright, maybe this is my issue, but remote controls in hotels are really dirty. ** Again, my issue, not yours. *** Ibid.

Beautifully updated. A continental breakfast unlike any other--house made fresh breads and scones, organic cereals, fresh fruit. The restaurant was awesome as well, with live music! The staff were super friendly and helpful. I didn't want to leave!

Convenient walking distance to Maine street was our main reason for staying here. Room on river side was quiet and had some updates. Very nice linens and towels but bed and floors were creaky. After all, it is historic. Ice machine is on ground floor near very nice gym that was never in use.

Excellent rooms in a unique building within walking distance of a quaint Main Street. The food is phenomenal with a superb and charming bar staff.

Went here while travelling to our honeymoon destination and liked it so much we booked another night on the return trip! The rooms were comfortable (though nothing special), the staff was extremely friendly, and the homemade continental breakfast was amazing. They even gave us the recipe for their homemade granola when we asked! The ability to make reservations to have the hot tub / sauna all to yourselves is a huge plus as well...

I stay here once a month (for work) and I haven't been disappointed. Staff has been very nice and helpful, rooms are nice and very clean. The windows open (good for hot sleepers like me) and it's pretty quiet. Has more of an inn feel than a hotel. Bar is small but has a few local beers on tap. I've had the burger for dinner which is fine- not awesome, but decent. Breakfast is ok, fairly average. Easy parking and walkable to Maine St.

One of the better hotel stays I've had recently. Pros: great customer service, location, reasonable rates, excellent "continental" breakfast, and well-appointed rooms. The Inn is an older building with old-world charm and details, but with modern amenities such as keurig single-cup coffee maker in each room. The bathrobes were also a nice touch. The breakfast was great as well: Numi tea, chobani greek yogurt, cereals such as GoLean, and hot food items such as quiche and silver dollar pancakes. Also, fresh fruit and coffee was available 24-hours a day; cookies are available in the afternoon. As for location, you are minutes away from Main St. and a quick walk to Bowdoin. Also, you are well-situated for quick drives to Portland, Freeport (outlet shopping, if you so choose) and Bath. There is an on-site restaurant and bar, which I did not try. I'll be back again.

We went to #10 Water Street during a snowstorm the other night so we had the place pretty much to ourselves.Beautiful restaurant, nice fire going in the room-dividing fireplace and friendly service by the waitress/bartender. We tried four selections from the tapas menu (little neck clams, a hot clam dip, tenderloin crostini and a shrimp spring roll) and were very happy with all choices, esp. the littlenecks, served with sausage and spinach and steamed in wine. Enough food so that we felt fine splitting a burger (ordered medium rare but served very rare) served with nice sweet potato fries. Lovely place and we look forward to a return visit.
(4)Lloyd M.
Overpriced and there was a mistake with both orders... The ambiance was very good with he bar and fire and bar, but not a good value and the drinks were weak.
(2)Lauren L.
This is a review for the hotel only, as we did not eat at the restaurant (save for the continental breakfast) I wavered between 3 and 4 stars, and finally settled on 3. The good: - Walking distance to the Brunswick corridor of restaurants and shops - Private sauna and hot tub (you have to reserve a time, which was off putting at first but I actually loved because it meant you weren't sharing the hot tub with Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. - Cute, old time hotel atmosphere... this will show my youth but I don't recall ever staying in a hotel with, you know, metal keys. So if that's on your life to do list, come on over to Captain Daniel Stone Inn! - Friendly staff - Cozy restaurant atmosphere The bad: - Smoke detector in our room went off many times. We were not offered any sort of extras or anything beyond a brief apology even though our ears were blown out for no reason. They did send a maintenance man to fix it, but it still kept going off. I am assuming this is not a normal occurence. - The continental breakfast left much to be desired. For the nightly cost of a room I would have expected more. Bottom line: Very charming atmosphere. Pretty nice amenities. Great location. But not a flawless experience.

After being in a hotel such as this one, it is going to be very hard for me to find a hotel that will measure up to this one! The room that my family and I stayed in was a suite! There was a sitting room that contained a desk, pull out sleeper couch, chair, plasma t.v. and a wooden cabinet with draws that also held a tiny refrigerator. Then there were two swinging doors that lead you into the bedroom, where you would find a king size bed with a plush pillow top, 2 night stands with lamps, a chair, and another plasma T.V. Then there was the bathroom! I don't usually like bathrooms, but this one was amazingly spacious! A matter of fact it was divided into two sections. One held the toilet and sink, and the other held the bath-tub and stand-in shower. I have honestly NEVER been to a hotel where everything was this spacious and comfortable! Might I add, beautifully decorated! However, I rated this hotel with 4 stars because despite how much I HIGHLY recommend this place to others, I do have a few small complaints. The first complaint has to do with the free continental breakfast. They only had a small select variety that fell under the "free" category. Hence, if you wanted something more, like waffles and etc, you had to pay extra for those items. Aside from that, by the last day of our stay, I also found mold in one of their blueberry muffins. Thankfully, I haven't gotten sick from consuming them. I won't deny that I have had better continental breakfasts in my time! So for those of you who choose to stay, you might want to consider eating your meals elsewhere! The last complaint is kind of petty... But one of the locks on our door did not appear to work right. My dad had no problem with getting it to lock, but I couldn't make it work for nothing. See...I told you it was a petty complaint! Soooo...aside from the food and the lock, I had a fantastic stay! If I can ever afford to do it again, I will def consider it! =)

By far the rudest and least helpful owner/manager I have ever met. Such an asshole to our party, specifically a disabled member of the family. If it were not for him and his blatant rudeness I would give this hotel 3 stars, the rooms are nice but there is really nothing special about this place. Stay somewhere else!
(1)Richard L.
I recently stayed at this very cheerful and very comfortable hotel and had a wonderful stay. The rooms are immaculate and the staff is extremely professional, polite and helpful. There is a great exercise room and it is so close to Bowdoin College and Frosty's Donuts. Joanna and Mandy were particularly nice and helpful. This is one of my favorite hotels in America. The Choice Hotel Ascend Collection Hotels are awesome. I'm really hoping that my son will attend Bowdoin College so that I can stay here when I visit him. Plus Bowdoin is such a great school.
(5)Frank B.
The food was acceptable, but nothing special. The service staff were not well trained or personable. The wine list is very limited. This restaurant may be able to survive in Brunswick, but there are better meals for less, in Portland. We will go back to try the bar menu, but if you are looking for a place to eat in Brunswick, try Richards or Clementines before you go here.
