Holy timewarp! This place is a step back in culinary time. As well as decor time. First impressions is that it is in a quaint old New England Inn. Then you walk in and you see a restaurant in a quaint Old New England Inn... that hasn't been redecorated since about 1950. Don't get me wrong - it is clean and well-kept up, but if you like floral patterns, then this is your place. Old-fashioned pastel patterns on the tablecloths, wallpaper, electrical covers, and more. When you sit down, you'll find a crudite of celery, scallions (!?!?), radishes and olives. It is an indication of the culinary point of view here: classic preparations of classic continental European and New England dishes like shrimp scampi, veal parmesean, baked stuffed scrod with crabmeat stuffing, and a variety of chicken sautes. Options for sides include rice pilaf, baked potato and potatoes Lyonnaise. Cheese, butter and sauces. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but don't expect infused foams or fusion cuisine here. While this isn't going to be mistaken for a culinary cutting edge powerhouse, the food is fresh and well-prepared. There isn't anything here to cheer loudly about, but definitely nothing to complain about either. It is actually an interesting opportunity to experience good old fashioned continental cuisine prepared in a classic manner.

Tom's is an excellent place to spend time enjoying a leisurely dining experience. The food is always excellent. The service can't be beat.

Over a leisurely two hours four of us enjoyed cocktails followed by an appetizer of fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with ricotta accompanied by an herb sauce. Salads were basic but the dressing was homemade. They are famous for their poppyseed dressing and sell it separately. Two of us had delicious seafood jambalaya on rice with crawfish and andouille along with shrimp, chicken & scallops in a fabulous sauce. We took doggy bags home and the jambalaya was even better the next day. The veal scaloppine was tender and scrumptious. Having tasted all my companion's meals, I have to say that the scallops homestead I ordered were definitely the highlight of the entrees. Pan seared with the most delicious maple cream sauce - they melted in my mouth. The dessert was house made and yummy Please understand that if you go here, don't expect to be in and out. As other reviewers have noted it is run alone by a husband and wife who are committed to high standards & food made from scratch and to order. They strongly recommend reservations as this helps them plan and serve. Also, they are occasionally closed for private functions on nights you might expect them to be open. In order to have only fresh options they are sometimes out of menu items. I personally find it amazing that two people can pull this off six nights a week and maintain the quality they do. Although it was my first time to Toms, my dining companions had been there at least a half dozen times and said they have never been disappointed

A couple owns and runs this place. Karen the wife is shall we say eccentric. But don't be put off. She runs the place as hostess, waitress and barkeep alone. And Tom remains out of sight in the kitchen turning out cooked to order selections one after another, all presented tastefully and well worth the extended cocktail hour. The menu is broad but some items are not always available. No fear. Our party of six enjoyed everything we ordered, from zucchini blossoms to lamb chops (8 large ones to the order), to mixed seafood grill including half a lobster,to. Haddock and wondrous desserts. Alas Tom is well protected and remains unseen so one must send compliments via Karen. The couple owns the large stately home/restaurant having lovingly restored the property 34 years ago. Go there with an attitude of adventure and fun and you will enjoy the experience, the delectable cuisine and the long evening. We will certainly return if in the area.

The dinner I had was probably the finest I have eaten in the state of Maine and I have been vacationing there 2 weeks a year for 10 years. The food is cooked to order and that necessitated a wait but as I waited I couldn't help but hear all the raves about the food from all the surrounding tables. A great prime rib, wonderful stuffed clams and the standout was the white chocolate raspberry silk cake I had heard the diners raving about. The prime rib was not the typical one either it truly was delectable and cooked and seasoned to perfection awesome I hope I can get back there for my summer vacation this year A comment about your 1 star review I am sorry that the family felt insulted as they did but for this style of dining it was probably for the best

This place was better than we expected, however our expectations were set rather low due to the high number of "just serviceable" tourist traps near vacation spots in Maine. When weekend vacationing in Maine, we typically cook for ourselves since there is such an abundance of fresh seafood, meats and vegetables in the summer. Eating out usually yields overcooked seafood, poor cuts of meat and standard issue seasoning and side dishes. Being that we have two small kids with willing grandparents/babysitters, my wife and I decided to go out for our anniversary. With limited options someone mentioned Tom's. As long as it meant a quiet night out, without kids, we were more than happy to try it out. A reservation is a must since there is a limited staff and everything is cooked to order. Do not bring children, the wait would kill them (and you). We didn't mind waiting as it meant more time out of the house and fortunately we asked for a full bottle of wine which unfortunately went dry before the entrees arrived. As the waitress said "it's not fast food". While not too pleased with the somewhat boring menu selection, the special of Halibut with Corn Salsa sounded too good to pass up. Unfortunately a party of 10 arrived just before us, eight of whom got the halibut, which was all they had. This is actually refreshing that a restaurant runs out of something good, albeit disappointing for me. I wound up playing it safe with crab stuffed haddock and chicken gumbo soup. The soup was very good, had a fantastic tomato base. The haddock was also better than expected. Whenever stuffed haddock is on the menu I typically shy away because the chef overcooks the haddock to cook the stuffing right. In this case the haddock and stuffing were both cooked perfectly. For sides I had a fantastic summer squash and so-so potatoes au gratin. In hind sight I should have tried the rice pilaf. Overall we were pleased with our meal and service. The thing I appreciated the most was their use of fresh ingredients and then not screwing them up. We'll be returning again when we need a quiet night without two screaming kids!

Was told when we walked in that it was not a place for kids! "this is a fine dining establishment where all food is cooked to order. " We promptly turned and walked back out the door.
