We stayed here for a recent vacation and were thoroughly pleased. Since there seem to be surprisingly few reviews for the Hodgdon Island Inn on Yelp! as of this writing, I feel compelled to add one. The innkeepers, Pamela and Richard, are lovely, down-to-earth people who bend over backwards to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. and who cheerfully provide a wealth of information about the area. We felt very at ease with them. The location is excellent: quiet and residential, but still just a short and easy drive away from Boothbay Harbor. Although the inn is not right smack on the shoreline, it is only a stone's throw away: you can easily see the water from the inn, and there's a little strip of grass that leads from the inn's driveway down to a lovely spot near the water's edge with a couple of chairs for enjoying the view. There's parking available right at the inn, and there's also a general store across the street where you can get sandwiches, which is an excellent option if you want a lunch that you can carry with you. (Incidentally, the store also sells lobster rolls; they are not the cheapest in the area, but they are very generous in terms of the amount of lobster you get.) The inn itself is lovely. The decor includes lots of antique touches, but has a modern aesthetic; it is definitely not cluttered or twee. The raspberry-colored parlor (yes, raspberry--trust me, it works) with the huge model ship framed by a bay window is to die for. Pamela and Richard, please come decorate our house! The guest rooms are charming as well, and well-appointed. I would say that they look even nicer in person than in the inn site's photos. Everything in our bedroom and en suite bath looked new and clean, and was in excellent working order. Although our room wasn't huge, it felt spacious: the small bathroom had a shower stall that was surprisingly roomy, and the bedroom included a king-sized bed, reading chairs, a mini-fridge, several lamps, and a dresser, with enough room left over for our things. The bed was quite comfortable, and I'm pretty fussy about beds. The bathroom was well-stocked with soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.--even makeup remover towelettes--and the tops of the water glasses were wrapped in plastic. Our only complaints with the room were very minor ones: first, our mini-fridge was a little noisy at night, but that was easily solved by unplugging it; and second, on the last night and morning of our stay, the room that shared a wall with ours was occupied, and I did wake up a little earlier than expected due to the normal sounds of the people in that room getting ready in the morning. The sounds were not extremely loud, nor was it extremely early--I am just a light sleeper and a late riser. If you are, too, you may want to ask whether any rooms directly next to yours will be occupied during your stay. Note also that some of the rooms do have parts with slanted ceilings, so if you are unusually tall, you may want to ask about that. The breakfasts were excellent. We were served two courses each day: the first was always some kind of fruit dish, and the second was a heavier dish, usually involving eggs. You also get coffee and/or juice. If you're a light eater, you could probably make do with just the first course, although you may want to at least taste the second. Although it's hard to pick favorites, we especially enjoyed the blackberry-ricotta parfaits and the English muffin French toast with fresh berries and cream cheese whipped cream. Breakfasts are served in the inn's dining room, which has several small tables to choose from--or, if you like, you can eat out on the porch. In the evenings after dinner, the innkeepers also put out a freshly-baked dessert in the parlor, along with coffee and tea. You can sit and enjoy it there and chat with any other guests who stop by, or you can grab a tray and bring your goodies up to your room. All in all, we had a wonderful stay. I highly recommend this inn.

Innkeepers Pamela and Richard obviously love their inn and do everything to give their guests a wonderful experience. Here is a list of things I love about this place: 1. We were greeted by the innkeepers outside right after we pulled into the parking area. A first in my experience. 2. The building is a lovely nineteenth century sea captains home that is beautifully maintained and decorated. 3. It is quiet. There was a water view from the two rooms (numbers 2 and 3) where we stayed. The beds were comfortable. Here's a great place to relax. 4. Breakfast is a gourmet delight, and every day at six p.m. a freshly baked dessert is put in the front room for the guests to eat all through the evening (another first in my experience). 5. The inn is just a mile or two from the Maine Botanical Gardens which are fabulous and worth more than one visit. 6. Pamela and Richard are gracious, friendly, helpful and treat you like family. I like variety, but I can't see myself staying anyplace else when I'm in the Boothbay area.

I loved this place, the hospitality is exceptional, never met people like Pam and Richard. They we so friendly to me and my husband as soon as we got there and we're very helpful. After few minutes of chatting with them we felt like we knew them for a long time. I would defently recommend this place and not to mention how wonderful cooks they are. Planning my next trip already.

We enjoyed a fabulous 5 nights in this beautiful B & B. If you are able to win a reservation you'll experience first hand the perfect combination of genuine hospitality, comfortable and clean accommodation, beautiful decor and scenery, and spot on advice on what to do in the area. At the end of the day, all we could do is think of what incredible breakfast we'd enjoy the next morning. We recommend you book a stay with Pamela and Richard.

If I could give it 10 stars, I would. This was one of the best vacation experiences I have ever had. We were greeted at the door by the innkeepers, Pamela and Richard, at 11:30pm and walked in with an offer to have some carrot cake and fudge cookies for a late dessert. We were taken to our room, which looked BETTER than the pictures (when does that ever happen?) and fell into one of the most comfortable beds we'd ever slept in. Breakfast was one of the highlights of our trip. Each breakfast came with at least two courses, all creatively crafted by the innkeepers (we had baked oatmeal and toast cups filled with scrambled eggs among other things) and baskets full of muffins with every meal. Pamela and Richard really made the inn feel like a home. On one of the nights, we ended up sitting in their living room for hours like we were old friends. Tea and dessert were a staple in the evenings after a long day of running around Boothbay. My boyfriend and I also went whale-watching one of the days and were sorely ill-equipped to get on a boat so at the end of breakfast, Pamela and Richard came out of the kitchen with a ziplock bag full of homemade blueberry muffins and two windbreakers! On our last day, we ended up having a three hour breakfast because we were having such a good time. I don't know how much more to express the amazing time we had here. Pamela and Richard really built a magical place.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights this past summer and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I believe I had read on the website that if one were arriving after a certain time (7 PM?) that the innkeepers appreciated a heads-up and would arrange for a 'late' check-in. Hitting a lot of weekend traffic (1 hr. to get out of Boston) and a dog sitting drop-off put us later than we'd planned so we called ahead. Half expecting the proprietors to be a little put out (of course, without showing it), by disruption to a preferred schedule, I was unprepared for the memorable welcome we received. Both Pamela and Richard came out of the inn to welcome us as we were getting out of our car. They were full of good cheer and and helped with our bags while acquainting us with the inn. I've probably stayed at 40+ B&B's over the years and their greeting was exceptional. Our first night we were in the 'loft' room which has a separate entrance, a big jetted tub and a cozy feel (I think it may have a gas 'wood' stove for use in colder months). The only downside was the room is under the eves and I hit my head (softly) a couple of times, so, if you're tall be aware (I'm 6'0). The second night of our stay (I booked late so we had to change rooms) I think we were in room #7 which was also very comfortable but may have only had a shower. The inn is located about 8 minutes from downtown Boothbay Harbor but our GPS didn't work everywhere in the area so it's probably good to print some written directions and/or pay real close attention to landmarks if trying to get back to the inn, for the first time, after dark (thank you, our two, nighttime guardian angel joggers!). The inn is very clean and updated in many ways. There is a small (heated?) pool. The breakfast and fresh baked dessert, served evenings, in the common room were delicious. The guests when we stayed tended towards 60-70 years of age which made for a pretty quiet atmosphere but the common room was active probably until at least midnight (we 'youngsters' were in bed by then). We would love to return.

I've stayed at this Inn for over a decade with its various owners, and I'll be staying here next July, but I've had the hardest time actually getting in touch with the owners to book my stay. I've been trying to talk with the innkeepers for over a week, but only get booted to their voicemail. To make it more confusing, sometimes I just get a generic machine greeting and other times I get a HII-specific voicemail. But never, ever do I get the actual innkeepers. I'm sure I'll have a great time in July, but right now I'm fairly dissatisfied with their response time to future, paying customers. I'll be happy to change this review when the owners actually call me on the phone about my reservation. Owners, just play your messages and you'll figure it out how to do this!
