George's is an institution in Biddeford for more than 60 years and it's because they make the classic Maine Italian (sub) with the freshest ingredients and they are inexpensive. Closed on Mondays, cash only, and sometimes they close early in summer because they run out of bread. Used to be they only offered salami or ham or salami + ham when I was growing up in Boston. (Dad's from Biddeford.) Since they "moved" around the corner a few years back onto Franklin Street, they have other offerings like turkey, roast beef, and tuna salad, but I still stick to the salami basic with extra Greek olives. Nice soft roll, split, with a chopped onion base layer, the fillings of salami, cheese, green pepper, tomato, pickles, with pitted/halved Greek olives on top, then drizzled with olive oil, and dusted with salt & pepper. It's not a "loaded" sub if you are looking for a lot of meat, but a well-balanced Maine Italian without mayo, lettuce, or ingredients that wouldn't keep for a Biddeford/Saco millworker. Did I mention that I grew up in Boston? But George's has become part of my ritual visits to Biddeford...going to Reilly's to pick up napoleons for my Dad & send some to my Connecticut aunt, check out Reny's in Saco, and of course, the beach at Fortunes Rocks. I always get one for me to eat at Fortunes Rocks, and then they offer the subs with oil on the side if you want travelers for home.

Take out only, cash only. I got a Genoa and provolone with no onions, no olives, SPO. It was very good! Fresh bread, fresh veggies, made quickly. Plenty of off street parking. I would highly recommend this place. Weird thing, I'm not sure how I didn't know this was here until today and I've lived in the area (for a while, less than a mile away) and never knew of its existence.

Never a disappointment! Bread and veggies are always fresh, staff is nice, and transactions are quick, even when they're busy! We go to NH a few times a year and always stop at George's for a meal on the road!

Growing up with the almighty Philadelphia hoagie, I have had to adjust to the Portland-style Italian sandwich. In general, I am not a fan - the rolls are usually subpar, and the whole olive and green pepper thing reminds me of Subway. There are, however, a few that I have found enjoyable. Of these, George's reigns supreme. Though the style of roll is the same - squishy and a bit bland - the rolls seems just a little fresher and more flavorful. The cold cuts seem a cut above others I have had on an Italian sandwich, especially the turkey. The sandwiches are well put together, so they don't fall apart or congeal into a paste-like texture midway through. And the price is really fair. I think my favorite aspect is the feel of the joint. It's clearly been there for years, unchanged and unaffected by interior design trends. It retains it's character, and feels like walking into 1977. That's not always a bad thing.

These are the most freshest and delicious Italian sandwiches you will ever eat. Nobody in the area even comes close. It's just the right amount of all ingredients to be perfect.

This is THE place for italians in Biddeford. Everyone else is competing for a distant second. Cash only, not that you'll need more than a few bucks. Closed on Mondays.

The BEST "Italians" (grinders) in the world. My dad has been going here since they opened and I go when I visit. In fact, I go every day that I visit. Order the regular salami Italian, you won't be sorry.

George's has been popular for over 60 years and it's because they found a good formula and have stuck to it. They make good sandwiches that aren't too expensive. The Italians are loaded with big pieces of tasty vegetables and meat. If you want more meat in your sandwich or there's a vegetable you don't like, they'll make the sandwich however you want. There's a list of ingredients so you can figure out what they're putting inside, but salt and pepper aren't on the list. I found my sandwich to be a little salty because I didn't know they were going to add salt. Now I know and I'll be back to George's soon. Next time, more meat and no salt. And I learned the hard way that they're closed on Mondays. Now you know.

The way an Italian sandwich should be.

Working in the area and hearing people talking about George's as some god send in Maine Italian sandwich heaven so I thought to myself, I have to try this. I ordered the standard, white ham loaded, pepper and oil only. The bread was fresh, soft, and the veggies fresh and newly sliced. The veggies are of very high quality, and the bread is the type that you can just sit and eat with nothing. But honestly, the ham and cheese was really nothing to talk about. It's only a single layer of American cheese (any other cheese is extra) and a single layer of ham. Overall, it is a very good sandwich. There is a good amount of veggies, but I would request more olives since they seem to skimp on them. Was it superbly, mind-blowing amazing? No. But is it good, and at $3.75 (tax included) and you're so full it hurts? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. I'd go just to taste what the fuss about, and if you do not like it. It's only 3.75, it doesn't break the bank. Oh, and cash only ladies and gents. You have been warned.

George's has been making Italians the same way for over 50 years. I work with people who grew up in Biddeford and they say that it still looks the way they remember it being when they were kids. In this day and age that may not always be perceived as a good thing. But, I can tell you, for George's, it's been a recipe for success. In addition to that, I think what has George's be such a local stand-by is that they keep things simple. If you want perhaps the best Italians in the area, this is the place to go to. I like the fact that they only accept cash, and that their Ham or Salami Italians are only $3.30!! The bread is excellent and the veggies are cut thick and fresh. I've actually only had the salami or ham italians here (may times over), but that's why I come. However they also have other sandwiches on their menu, which look good too. On a final note, one of the things that always impresses me about George's is their neatness and cleanliness. For the lunchtime rush they arrange their most common sandwiches in a partially pre-made state and cover them in wax paper. When you order they slide yours out, add the toppings you wish (go for the works, salt, pepper and oil) and wrap it up. All in about 30 seconds. I walk the half-block to my apartment and enjoy my lunch at home.

I moved away from Biddeford a decade ago, the guy i sit next to at work happens to also be from Biddeford, so we reminisce about the "back home places" a lot. George's comes up in conversation nearly every time as we reflect with nostalgia, our mouths watering and stomachs grumbling. So on a trip up to visit my mom recently, I stopped into George's to grab lunch for the family. The most bizarre thing about this place is that it is EXACTLY how i remember it looking 10 years ago. No-frills, bare-bones little shop but immaculately clean. I thought "good. it's the same. hopefully the food will taste like I remember it, too". YEP. That's a double-score for you, Ol' George. I ordered my italian (and a side-note here on the word "italian" - if you are from maine, everything is an italian. You can go up to any lunch counter and order a "turkey italian" and that seems normal to the person taking the order. In boston, only the traditional italian sandwich with the salami, genoa, cappicola, etc is ever called an italian, and everything else is a sub. I learned that one the hard way through being teased mercilessly at every deli counter in the greater boston area for ordering a "turkey italian" until i was able to break the habit! So thank you, George, for letting me call everything an "italian". I love you for that.)...but I digress. I ordered my italians, loaded, watched the staff line 'em all up and methodically but meticulously fill them each to the brim with tasty, fresh ingredients, and wrap them in that lovely white deli paper. They still carry Humpty Dumpty chips (which isn't a big deal for Mainers, but you can't get 'em down here. This town is taken over by Cape Cod chips and Utz. Ugh.) BUT no one told me that apparently they don't make ketchup-chips anymore? That was a giant disappointment but not George's fault. So why not 5 stars? The difference between "yay, i'm a fan" and "Woo Hoo as good as it gets" lies in these two words: CASH ONLY. Yes, i know these puppies are cheap, but I don't think i ever have more than $2 on me at any given moment, so I have to make an ATM trip to get money for my lunch.

Oh George's how do I love thee...let me count the ways: tuna italian loaded with extra oil; ham italian loaded with extra oil; combo italian; whoopie pies; humpty dumpty bbq potato chips -- this place is on my short list when I come home to visit. I must get an italian from George's. I recommend you go on Tuesday and Saturday -- that's when the bread is freshest and make sure to bring cash since that's all they accept and be prepared to be very very pleased! They offer some of the best sandwiches I've ever had.
