Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

We ate there a few months ago. I love Mexican food and I was very pleased. I had grilled fish...?Mahi Mahi on a bed of greens with a mango dressing. It was was scrumptious. It was crowded and a bit loud because there was a city wide music festival that day but the service was great and the decor was very authentic. I would highly recommend.

I had a few solid meals there with good service. Nothing amazing, but certainly better than average and a good value overall. The last time I went they were out of so many basic ingredients (like burger buns) that we actually left because about half the menu was unavailable. Weird, since the grocery store is just down the road and the Co-op is across the street. The complimentary salsa changed -- it is now super spicy and kind of gross whereas it used to be fresh tasting and very good. I hope my one weird experience was just an aberration.

Had dinner last Sunday with my daughter. Echoing much of the previous comments, I feel the prices are high for the quality of flavor and preparation. I had a chicken verde chimi, it was baked rather than fried which is a nice change, but does lose the crispness, more important though is it losses the unnecessary fat which is a good thing. The chicken was just ok, cooked well which is ok by me, hate seeing pink chicken, but nothing to rave about, not as much flavor "pop" as I would expect for a higher end Mexican dish - based on pricing I expected something a little higher end than what we got. Seasoning was just not very prominent, almost bland. A bit more tomatillo sauce or maybe cilantro mixed with the chicken to pump up the flavor was more of what i had expected. The ranchero sauce was also generic. The black beans were cooked fine but bland, where as the rice was pasty but had nice seasoning. The side salad was pretty abysmal, more of a shredded lettuce garnish - not the side salad I was expecting. We started with poppers that were tasty with a nice sauce, but nothing special. My daughter felt the same way. She had tacos for lunch the day before and was not impressed at all, she said the tacos tasted like they came out of a grocery store box and she could do just as well or better at home. But she felt it was worth trying a dinner just in case it was something more memorable. We both had one basic margarita during happy hour and the bill came to just a bit over $50 before tip, no desserts. The service was good. The atmosphere was fine, a quiet Sunday afternoon, although no A/C so it was on the edge of being a bit too warm for my comfort. Frankly, I doubt that I'll return, certainly not on a hot day. I've had mexican food in a lot places including Mexico and have generally paid far less for far better.

I love their portions even if they're a bit expensive. Hard to arrive with parties larger than 4. No extra chairs out back? Come on.

Wait staff very rude, will not go back. Suggestion with tacos and all diner entrees sour cream and salsa should be free..... not .50 each extra.

La vida is a place I would think to find on an episode of "kitchen nightmares." I order only one item, Nacho Grande with chicken, and It was utterly discussing. The pulled chicken tasted like it sat around for week in a vat of old meat, It turned my stomach. Lets break it down.. Taste Was Bland and not fresh, Ground beef was an option... thats an automatic sign of poor Mexican food. I'd be ashamed of the food if I owned that restaurant. Its a bar and thats all it should be fire the kitchen staff and just push the booze because everyone else knows thats why its getting some stars from other reviewers. If you order food you'll get sick...TRUELY SICK.

Great place, love the plaintain appetizer - that's what pushed the rating to five stars. Food and service was excellent. I can't wait to go back.

Solid laid back, Mexican-Caribbean joint with decent food and above average drinks. Margaritas were well made, and the local beer (red ale on draft) was cold and flavorful. You can have smaller servings of dips/salsas for $2, including a great warm bean dip and a chunky guacamole. The salsa was thick and chunky - we really enjoyed it! The tacos - hard shells made here - were solidly good. Smoked pork taco was far and away the best. My son had the mako shark bites, which were much tastier than I expected. Three stars represents a darn good rating for a solid, above average Mexican bar and food establishment. Don't hesitate to stop in for a nice snack and a cold beverage.

Nice little spot. However it's always like I'm the only person there. Is everything okay here? Foods is fair drinks are good and they pretty cheap. Most will say going out for Mexican in one of the best areas for seafood is a stretch. I might agree. There are other places to try in town but if you need some tequila or a cold Pacifico in draft, it's worth a visit.

La Vida was opened by the owners of Delvinos, so I had high expectations as I have never had a bad meal there, but I was disappointed in my dinner at La Vida. My partner and I got the dill fries appetizer... the concept is awesome (french fries made from potatoes that have been soaked in dill pickle juice) and the dill dipping sauce was delicious, but the fries were overcooked and chewy. We were hungry and ate them all, but they could have been way better. We both ordered the special Caribbean Fish Cakes and were disappointed at how mushy they were. They were accompanied by bland, mushy black beans and rice on the plate, so neither of us finished everything. In fact, of the 2 fish cakes, we each only ate 1. We also thought the prices were a little on the high side... one of the reasons we both got the fish cakes was that it was only $13.99 - most other entrees were $15.99/$16.99+. We kind of felt like the prices should have been a couple dollars lower per entree. The interior of the restaurant is great and the location is perfect (right across from the coop). Given the great food we are used to getting at Delvinos, I am sure we will give La Vida another shot, but maybe after is has been open longer, and we'll go for lunch, which hopefully will be cheaper.

Where else in Maine can you get grilled plantains and coconut shrimp at happy hour? This restaurant is a great little find. Being from the South originally, I am picky about Latin food, but La Vida passes the test! The spices are perfect and the waitstaff is always friendly and fast. Their margaritas are pretty good and the happy hour specials can't be beat!

I had delicious delicious fish here. Cool low key atmosphere. Although I didn't have a drink while I was here- everyone else did and they said they were delicious as well. Our waiter even gave us an extra guacamole bowl to bring water to our dog in the car! So sweet! Will be going back in the future.

The atmosphere is nice and generally fun, requisite Mexican decorations and color, and regular specials that invite you to drink plenty of margaritas. The wait staff was really nice and friendly. Just don't expect (we didn't) "real" Mexican food. It's an America-Carribean-Mexican fusion, and that's fine. The margaritas were good, the rice and beans good. The fish taco was so-so. The main "not like" here is that two dishes amongst us had "jerk shrimp skewers", one as the main dish focus. The shrimp were shriveled, overcooked, tough, and even smaller than the wedges of grilled pineapple on the skewers! Since there were only about 8 shrimp total in the entree, 4 on the other person's, this was not a happy moment. I asked for a re-cook of the shrimp only, and they arrived (5 of them) just the same as before, just a bit more marinade on them. I tried one and didn't go any further. I ate what was edible, which was the pineapple, black beans and the sweet potatoes. BTW, the waitress was quite nice about it.
