In a nutshell, overpriced, bland, poor atmosphere. We came to this place in July and were sorely disappointed. Partner had the special - lobster fra diavlo. It was a very small portion, especially for the high price, and the sauce seemed to be plain tomato sauce with one spice added to it. The bread that was put on the table had butter and cheese already on it. When we asked for plain bread we were told there was none. Oooookaaaay. I had crab and spinach stuffed shells. Again, for the price seemed like a small portion. Btw, we are both on the small side and don't eat a lot anyway, so when we think the portions are small.....you get my drift. The atmosphere - wow this place needs a makeover. Some of the seating was in these uncomfortable old wood booths that we were first seated in. We switched to a table and just behind my partner, in the corner, and in very visible sight, was a daddy long legs spider. I couldn't believe no staff had noticed it. Anyway, I digress, the place needs work, and a paint job, and a much better atmosphere for the prices they charged. On the upside the waitress gave my partner vegetables unexpectedly because of the bread situation. Service was friendly. I would only recommend this place as a last resort.

Food was terrible and expensive, mac and cheese was easy mac, mediterranean pasta had no taste, soup was too sweet. We wanted linguine with clam sauce that was on the menu, but was told they sold out, it was only 6:30pm at night. We waited over an hour after appetizer before our entree came. Very disappointed! the only good part was the dessert, the creme brulee was very good. the house wine was reasonable as well.

Good, solid Italian food in a town full of touristy restaurants. If I lived in Bar Harbor, I think would come here a lot. We were greeted with warm bread/foccacia fresh out of oven with a white bean spread and olive oil. My wife ordered linguine with clams which she enjoyed, and I had fresh halibut with white beans and tomato and saffron broth that was really a treat. Loved our waitress.

Having heard good things about this place, we decided to try it out while vacationing in Maine. It's true that the atmosphere in the restaurant was truly warm and inviting, but the food left A LOT to be desired. Had our food cost $30, we could have considered it an okay experience, but tossing down over $100 on a lackluster meal... eh. What a disappointment.

I don't understand why other people are raving about this place. We went after seeing all the reviews on yelp, but we completely disagree! We had the soup of the day - butternut squash and corn - and it definitely was thick with a bit of spice, but the flavors came at all the wrong times (you were left with a hot flavor, which did a complete disservice to what should have been a creamy butternut). The mac and cheese, which others had suggested, was bland at best. Hands down, I would rather eat a frozen, microwaveable box of Trader Joe's mac and cheese. It was crispy at the top (maybe a little burnt even), but lacked any depth of flavor, and seemed like they used a watery substitute for cheese. The sad garnish, a slaw with blue cheese sauce sounded good in theory, but again, you were left with a tang of cabbage quite ill matched to the dish. The crusted haddock had just as little flavor. It was well cooked, but quite bland. It was served on a bed of pasta with a watery red sauce, more fitting of a college town trough pasta place than a semi upscale italian eatery. The above could be excused if you were paying 5 dollars for a dish (even that would be a stretch), but instead entrees were $17. We didn't bother to finish our food (quite unusual for us), and lamented that we didn't just go to the local grocery store for bread, cheese and wine -- it would have been much more satisfying italian cuisine.

Mama Dimatteo's was one of the best date night experiences I had in Bar Harbor! The service was incomparable and the food was outstanding. I'm really not that big on Italian food so my SO and I opted to order items that weren't heavy on the Italian aspect. Before ordering, we received the complimentary bread basket with white bean dip & olive oil. The white bean dip was so good and different. For an appetizer, we ordered the mussels with tomato and garlic. It was delicious and had the perfect amount of garlic. For an entree, we split the crab and spinach stuffed shells. Apparently this is a seasonal local favorite and I can see why! I would definitely recommend checking out Mama Dimatteo's if you are in search of a great dinner alternative to seafood!

Not as good the second time around for some reason. Sure the staff is friendly and accommodating although the waiter was clueless about handling children. Sitting up the street from mobbed Side Street Café, this place was empty in comparison so we gave it a shot. I remembered the food as pretty good. Not sure what happened but the marinara on my pasta was so loaded down with garlic, it was almost inedible. The meatballs were okay but bland and the only good thing about the meal was the bread. For the price we paid, I would have thought Mama's sauce would have been better. I think next time I would skip this place and go down the street to Guinness and Porcellis where you always get a good meal.

Food was ok . Service got slow once another table complained they didn't get correct order. Took 15 minutes to get check. I had pasta which consisted of a meat wrapped on fig noodle and sauce was excellent but portion was very small

Delicious!!!!! We wanted a yummy Italian dinner and we searched yelp and found this restaurant. We loved that it also had the little rainbow sticker in the window (thank you) and the outside sign and twinkle lighs was very inviting! We were greeted immediatley and sat down to a friendly helpful server. I had the bucatini with tomato cream sauce and Jen had lobster with cream sauce. Delicious! We also loved that they brought a complimentary bread basket with bean and sage dip. Great Experience!

We went there based on some review on Yelp but it was a big mistake. I should have realized this as soon as we entered and the hostess seated us. The table was not clean and it took the forever to get us silverware even after we got our food. The ambiance was okay. The food too was not great. The focasia bread that we were served was cold and hard and a lot of item that were in the menu they were out of. We thought that was strange considering we were having an early dinner. After we finally found something that was available, it was quite average.. definitely not worth the $90 we paid for our meal (for 2 adults & 2 kids). The only saving grace was our waiter. He was nice and polite and the only reason we just didn't get up and walk out.

Really the worst clam linguine anywhere. Dishwater w a smattering of minced canned clams. How can a main bar harbor restaurant get away with such terrible food, is beyond me. The inside is old, uncomfortable and zero atmosphere. We should have stood in line at side street cafe next door. Good drinks and bread

If you ever find yourself in Bar Harbor up in the beautiful state of Maine, make sure you stop in for some delicious Italian food at Mama Dimatteo's. The food is fantastic and the wait staff is friendly, fast and efficient. Eric, the owner, is there most night and he is always up a a "Hello".

Just ate here...yeah..it's not prime Italian but the food was great...The friends were great...The staff was great. This is a family run business and regarding the other comments let me say this: i haven't seen a restaurant in Bar Harbor that is any better. This is a tourist town and considering most people are in jeans who cares? If you want fancy then go to New York City...or some place else.

Last night had the Tuscan New York strip. It was amazing, and the kale chips were so delicious! I decided to splurge and get the Chocorasptini it was fantastic, it tasted like a chocolate covered raspberry. Jennifer the hostess was friendly as always, and Alex our server was equally attentive. Can't wait to come back next year!

Our food took over an hour after ordering on a mostly empty night. Once it came, the food looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for 30 minutes. To say the food was mediocre is giving it too much credit. Ambiance was bleh. Like eating in your basement. Our waiter seemed extremely apathetic, but I wouldn't be proud to work there either. So many other great places to try. Avoid this spot and stand in line somewhere else.

Do not recommend dinning outside regardless of the weather. You sit basically sit in the parking lot next to the smoking area. If you enjoy stone dust and cigarette smoke the outside dinning area is for you. The food is very over rated in other Yelp reviews. Daughter had Mac and Cheese and it appeared like the noodles were cooked and some cheese from a fondue pot was poured over the top of the noodles and topped with bread crumbs. The fettuccine Alfredo was prepared in a similar manner. Noodles with a jar of sauce poured over the top. I had the Haddock special and it was under cooked. I would not recommend this restaurant

Easily the best meal we had in bar harbor. The atmosphere in Mama Di Matteo's is warm and pure "neighborhood" restaurant. Slightly off the main drag (abt 5 blocks), Mama's probably doesn't get as much traffic as some other places nearby, which is unfortunate for them (though I won't complain about the lack of crowd) because they are so good. We shared a ceasar salad: all homeade. Perfect. My husband got their homeade ravioli- perfect, perfect perfect. Thin pasta cooked perfectly, wrapped around spinach, cheese and tomato. I wish I could have brought it home. I got a side plate of spaghetti as I wasn't terribly hungry, but loved every bite. Did I say perfect yet? Our waitress was one of the best we've been served by- attentive without hovering, timing her checks perfectly (every waitperson should know to check back 2-3 minutes after the meal is served) and nice without being overbearing. My only (very minor) complaint about Mama's is that for the neighborhood feel, the prices are on par with some of the more upscale-feeling restaurants around. But none of them compare to Mama's in taste. Wish we could go back.

Kitchen is slow....being the night before the marathon you would figure they would have extra people. The waiter was good and apologetic for the food taking so long. It was busy but there wasn't a waiting list and I was by myself. The bread was the best, the salad had too much cesear dressing on it, the spaghetti was small, kinda bland and took almost an hour after ordering it. Next time I come I'll try a different place

For my birthday, I got to pick a restaurant to eat at and I'm not the biggest fan of lobster (which is unfortunate, since Bar Harbor/Maine is famous for lobster). Instead, I decided I wanted either pasta or steak. On the suggestion of one of employees at the hotel my family was staying at, we went to Mama Dimatteo's because they said it was a) good, b) not as crowded, and c) reasonably priced. Despite it being not as crowded, we made reservations anyways because we had a large group. The atmosphere of the restaurant, as everyone has commented, is really nice. It's that kind of atmosphere where you could take your date, or your grandma, or your friends. The first thing they did upon hearing that it was my birthday was hang up some Happy Birthday letters, and give me a birthday hat (with a choo-choo train). Toootally did not match the restaurant, and I looked ridiculous in it, but it was fun. :) First, let me say that the complementary bread is THE BEST bread I have ever gotten at a restaurant. The bread is five stars hands down. They give you two types of bread: toasted, and regular foccacia bread. Both are fantastic (though personally, I liked the toasted one better). As far as the food goes, I would give Mama Dimatteo's a four star, since while I thought my entree, the Tuscan Tenderloin (and the beef skewer appetizers) were fantastic and five star worthy, it seemed almost like a hit or miss on what was good. The marinara pasta we got as a side was fantastic, though a little small. My educated guess is that the marinara would have been also fantastic. If you like garlic, try the mushroom/garlic soup; it's really good and the bowl is only $1 more than the cup. If you're a little lactose intolerant though, you'll definitely want to avoid this one since, while it tastes fantastic, unless you're taking medicine, there's a decent chance you'll end up with an upset stomach from all the cream in it like my mother did. On the other hand, my sister got the Lobster Piccata and while she did eat all the lobster, the thing didn't taste like it was sauteed in wine like it said; the noodles I stole were practically swimming in wine. Even I thought the wine was a bit excessive, and I generally like wine. My mother ordered the roasted salmon, which was good, but the prosciutto required my steak knife to cut properly. The other thing was that after we finished eating our appetizer, there was no asking if we wanted dessert - they just gave us menus and expected us to order. When everyone expressed more interest in going to the ice cream place, there was a little problem with where they were going to put the candle to celebrate my birthday since they don't actually give you anything other than a hat and some decoration (which was kinda lame). So I ordered the Pot of Cream thing, which was good but much harder than I expected. And then the check took so. Freaking. Long. To come. I think I would give this restaurant one more chance, and go with a smaller group of people (like four instead of twelve). Maybe try something different like the ravioli or marinara with meatball (as much as I dislike ordering things like marinara at restaurants when I can make it at home). It was alright, but nothing to where I'd recommend it to someone unless they were going to order specific things (or for the bread!). I mean, it's a classier restaurant but I didn't actually get full or satisfied, hence the three star. I feel like I could still go and eat something else, despite having soup, entree, and a small bite of appetizer. But I'd be willing to give it a second go and see if it's more of a four star place. And I'd also go back for the toasted bread.

Against the suggestion of our bed and breakfast host, we decided to eat at Mama Dimatteo's anyways to use a gift card we received. I ordered the spinach&chicken lasagna. When the waitress set it down in front of me - I didn't see the lasagna under the mountain of Alfredo sauce. Once I pushed the sauce to the side, I uncovered 2 or 3 meager pieces of chicken, previously frozen spinach and a hard, burnt lasagna noodle. Needless to say, the food was a disappointment even when using a gift card. We give it 2 stars only because of polite wait staff.

Yipes is more like it! We typically go there every year while in Bar Harbor. Nevermore! There is no excuse ever for serving an entree that was clearly previously frozen and insufficiently nuked -- stone cold in the center! Burning cheese at the edges. And the portion was small enough that getting hit hot should not have been a problem! Then there was the waitress who, when we arrived spoke consistently in this sticky sweet high pitched voice, doting. When I answered the "and how is everything?" with "terrible, my nuked dinner is stone cold in the center" her voice dropped about 2 octaves, the sweetness evaporated. She offered my another "copy" of the same dish, which I declined. My husband said his dish was mediocre compared to prior years. We left and went down to the sub/pizza shop where I got a really good pulled pork sandwich to assuage my starvation from hiking.

After grabbing a drink at the small bar area we were quickly seated and ordered from the mouth-watering menu. Excellent appetizers I would highly recommend trying a few of them. Huge selection of wines as well. I got fettuccine alfredo with meatballs and it was delicious. A few in my party had their pasta overcooked but besides that minor setback the experience was lovely. Waitress was very nice. A great place to eat.

AWFUL! We couldn't believe we wasted our last night in Bar Harbor at this awful excuse for an Italian restaurant. Don't waste your time or money. The menu is limited, the red sauce is disgusting, tasted like dirty dish water with tomato paste. Even the waiter suggested we pass on the pasta marinara. He recommended the veal parm as the veal was fresh and they were pounding it out in the back, according to him. It looked like veiner schnitzel with a disgusting red watery red sauce. Didn't taste like anything recognizably Italian. My husband who can tolerate almost anything, ate it because he was hungry, but agreed it was poor at best. The hotel where we are staying, Bar Harbor Inn, recommended it. Read reviews before you go. How anyone could give this 4 stars, we will never know as we will never return.

I don't know why there are only two reviews of this place, though perhaps it is more of a 'locals' place and less of a 'tourists' place since it's tucked away from the main drag. Really delicious--best complimentary bread on my whole vacation! Reasonable prices (cocktail, two entrees, and dessert+tip still came to around 60 dollars), great food, and awesome service (our waitress was funny and attentive without being overbearing) made for a nice evening. Their homemade mac and cheese is worth trying--it has a little bit of a kick, too!

Allow me to add to the sea of mediocrity that Di Matteo's deservedly gets. I went against my better judgement and my reliable fellow Yelpers and came here to fix a hankering for Italian to offset several days of shore dinners and seafood. Service was fine but the atmosphere is pretty low brow. All that can be explained away if the food was good. But it wasn't. Echo the many previous reviews. Bread basket had various types in it, but the accompanying white bean dip was tasteless. I ordered the lobster picatta (think lemon and capers) with fettuccine, but it was so overwhelmed with capers that it just wasn't tasty. Mac and cheese was adequate for the kids, but my daughter's was so spicy she couldn't eat it. Very inequitable distribution of pepper perhaps. My father's filet mignon was pretty good. Wine list was very weak and my father's attempt to order the "best wine"on the menu was still pretty awful. Frankly I can't see where the positive reviews on Yelp are coming from - as usually a restaurant's reviews on Yelp are pretty consistent. Maybe Di Matteo has the occasional good day - but my guess is that these folks were so desperate for Italian food after a week of fish that they just couldn't see how disappointing this place really is!

Overwhelmed them with a group of 26 people. No problems serving us in very timely manner. Excellent food and great service. Highly recommended! Had the garlic crusted haddock which was fantastic. The Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale is very tasty.

This is a great Italian restaurant in Bar Harbor, back behind the Park. Linda had spaghetti and meatballs, I had baked halibut, the service is very personable, we ate outside on a veranda, the place was so quiet and the terrimasu was wonderful! With all the lobster places, this was a welcome change.

Wow! This a great Italian restaurant on a back street in BH. We had a delicious appetizer of mussels w/ tomato and garlic, entrees- clams and linguini, and portabella and beef ravioli. All very tasty and good portions. Their breads and bean with olive oil are equally yummy! Nice staff. Highly recommended.

My hubby and I went on a Saturday night in mid October. We still had over an hour wait. The tables are small and uncomfortable-ambiance could be much improved. I had the Mac & cheese appetizer which I couldn't resist because it said it had Gorgonzola cheese-I was expecting a bold, full flavored, unique Mac & cheese-but that's not what I got. The pasta was dry and flavorless-and worst of all greasy-a disappointment. The bread we got was not real Italian bread but crostini, which is dry and hard. There was a decent garlic butter on it. It is served with a flavorless white bean and sage spread with olive oil-again something neither of us enjoyed. My hubby had spaghetti with chicken. He said the chicken was burnt-sauce was ok-spaghetti was the sitting around drying kind of spaghetti. I had the chicken piccata-the portion size was small (so was my husbands)-the sauce had no taste, and the chicken was very dry-probably pre-cooked. For dessert we shared a creme brûlée-ok, but small and nothing to write home about. We spent $80 on the meal-& my husband said twice-"that was NOT a $80 meal". He was so right-won't be going back. The only stars come from the staff being good, and the spaghetti sauce being just ok :(
