India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.
Indian food has gained reputation all over the world especially in the United States. You can find many places serving the appetizing Indian food across all major cities in the US. India is a diverse country with different food culture originated from different parts of the country. While the Northern region boasts tandoori dishes and korma offering royal taste, the Western Ghats offers sea foods that is made in naturally sweet tender coconut milk. The South Indian food servers a quality of different dishes made from rice accompanied with spicy chutneys, curries and famous sambhar. Also, the Indian sweets are a delight to relish. If you ever want to have a burst of sugar syrup in mouth, don't forget to try few Bengali Sweets. Be it spicy, tangy, or sweet flavor, you can find everything in the Indian cuisine. Be assured that the melody of spices will surely bring delight to you.

A Taste of India is an authentic style Indian restaurant: The decor, staff and food are all Indian. The food is delicious with a delightful blend of spices and herbs that are unusual to the American palate. Every time I go there, I feel like I am taking a trip with my taste buds because the aromas and tastes are so exotic. They have a very good lunch buffet with a reasonable variety of options, all of which are delicious. You can also order food for take-out and it will be ready to pick up in 20 minutes or less. The only minor problem with this restaurant is the parking: As it is on the main street in downtown Bangor, it can be difficult to find a parking spot within close walking distance to the establishment without having to circle the block at least a couple of times. But, it is definitely worth the effort. I highly recommend the lamb or chicken tikki masala: the meat is marinated in a delicious creamy tomato sauce with a selection of herbs. It's simply mouth watering! Also their saag, spinach sauce with special herbs is quite delicious. And if you are a vegetarian, they make excellent selections with tofu replacing the meat, which are delicious, even to a full fledged carnivore like myself :)

Who knew Bangor, Maine had such great Indian food?! I have been pleasantly surprised every time I have eaten at Taste of India. It is owned and operated by a wonderful Indian family, a couple of which have recently become U.S. Citizens--congratulations! The service is prompt and personal, and the food is delicious! During the week a lunch buffet is available, or you may order off the menu. They will cook your dish with as much or little spice as you would like. My faves: chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, and the lamb saag. The only downside is parking. The location in downtown Bangor provides limited off-street parking, but even if you have to park down the street a bit, it is worth the walk.

Great food... One of the best Indian food I have ever had. I got paneer masala and it tasted really nice and the right level of spice. Because of downtown, parking can little difficult to find, but there is a free 2hr parking garage next street. Overall, food is totally awesome.

Service: worst Food: worst Price: overpriced This place is a total waste. I ordered a veg thali for my sister and aaloo paratha for myself. After like 45 mins of wait they gave me a veg thali and gave me a garlic naan instead of aaloo paratha. They said that aalo paratha was not available. If it was not available they should have informed me when I was ordering. And how can garlic naan replace aaloo paratha. How am I supposed to eat garlic naan without anything else. And they said that they didn't charge for aaloo paratha. But later when I checked my bill they had charged for garlic naan. The staff were really bad. I couldn't find any other Indian restaurant in this area. Maybe that's why the monopoly.

Good North Indian food around this area. Host is very kind and friendly. I will give big thumbs up.

This is one place I would never visit again, because (a) the server in both cases was very rude, and (b) for what they serve, they are overpriced. The first time we got there full 30 minutes before they were closing and she tried to chase us out and after I showed her the time, she was as rude as one could be. The second time, a year later, she started vacuuming next to us and we got up and left and she didn't even realize it. I understand that this is Bangor and they're the only Indian food in town, but this doesn't mean that you can be as rude as she was to us.

Food was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. The navratan korma was a super spicy, mixed vegetables dish with hardly any curry. The host served it as a "Mixed Veg" dish, when we ordered the Navratan korma. Upon confronting the host, she insisted that's how it is... weird, coz I've had this dish in hundreds of places during my lifetime in India and the US, and it's never tasted like this. She just refused to accept the fact that she served us the wrong dish. Service was super slow, terrible actually. My plate had 2 hairs on it, and had stale, rough unclean stains on it, had to ask for a replacement.

So delicious. So So delicious. Healthy portions so that you have yourself dinner, lunch, and dinner again the next day. It reheats very well. I came in on an odd weekday, was the only one in the restaurant, and asked for a recommendation. I went with the Chicken Tikka and an order of their coconut raisin naan. It was ready in 10 minutes. Oh I loved it!

good indian food. It's tasty! I like spicy chicken curry! Lamb curry is also good! Easy to find!

once-upon-a-time, this was a pretty darn good indian restaurant.. yes, we are talking about bangor, maine, but from what my in-laws tell me, it was delish. fast forward to now and the management has changed... and wow, we went here, wasted over $60 and didn't finish anything, it was GROSS. even the rice was crummy (wasn't real basmati and totally overcooked). my husband, who had tasted the older version was pretty bummed, as was i. even the appetizers (we got a mix of samosas, onion bhajis and the usual stuff) were quite unappetizing.. i think the frozen stuff you get at the supermarket tastes far better. also, same thing as alissa b's review: i asked for white wine and got red. bizarre. wish i could support this place, but two thumbs down!

Prior to moving to Maine (from Chicago), I'd been warned that ethnic cuisine in Maine was not only difficult to come by, but often disappointing when found. That was absolutely NOT the case when I recently tried Taste of India! A friend and I split the Chicken Tikka appetizer (generously portioned) and the Makhni Chicken (the latter recommended by our waiter when I asked if they had Butter Chicken) and both were outstanding. The spice level was right on (just spicy enough that you could tell it was authentic) and the flavors fully developed. Their rice was light and fluffy, a perfect compliment to both entrees. Not to be outdone by the entrees was the fresh-baked garlic naan. Mouth-watering doesn't begin to capture how perfectly baked and tasty this bread was. We ordered an additional order because the first was gobbled down so quickly. (The size of the naan was not particularly large, about a 6 inch round, but well worth the price of multiple orders.) Finally, their chutneys, and in particularly their cilantro offering, were delicious and well-spiced to compliment the food. The service was average, neither overly attentive nor neglectful, but the food more than made up for any wish I may have had for more frequent visits to ensure we had everything we needed. I have no doubt that Taste of India will be a regular in my eating-out rotation.

This was my first time at Taste of India, the place was small, but cozy and not cramped. The young man who seated me was polite. The menu was not as extensive as I've seen at other Indian places, but still had a good variety. I ordered a glass of chardonnay - the waiter brought me out merlot, I explained that the wine I had ordered was white, and pointed it out on the menu again. He apologized and brought me out the correct item. I ordered an appetizer, the onion bhaji - pretty tasty fried onion fritter. I smothered it in sauce and it was amazing. I ordered the chicken jal faregi for dinner a dish I had not tried before. The sauce, and the vegetables had the most flavor; I was disappointed by the bland flavor of the chicken. In fact, I did not eat most of it. I am unsure if this was normal flavor of the dish, as I am still relatively new to Indian food; however, I did not like it much. Overall the staff were nice; not terribly knowledgeable about the menu, but polite. The price was reasonable. The food was mediocre at best. I will not be visiting again of my own accord.

I would say this is a take out only place. My husband loves indian food and for his birthday we decided to give this place a try. First I felt over dressed and awkward when I entered the restaurant. The environment didn't feel warm and welcoming. The person who was or waiter obviously had better things to be doing. She filled our waters only when we said, "excuse me could I have some more water?" She gave us our food and then shortly after the bill. She didn't ask us if we would like dessert(which we would of since it was my Husband's Birthday). The food was good however and if my husband wants Indian again I would do it as take-out just to avoid the awkwardness of dinning it. If it was just me review I would of given this place 2 stars, but because my Husband loved the food I have to give it 3.
(3)Cristina G.
While the food was tasty, the service was just so-so. We stopped here on our way back from Bar Harbor. We had the Lamb VIndaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chana Masala and all was very aromatic. The Vindaloo was not as spicy as we would have liked it but it still tasted good. The one item that was very disappointing was the Gulab Jamun....those little dough balls in rose water. The Gulab was cooked a day in advanced I bet because usually they are nice and soft. These were hard as a rock.....don't get them unless you ask them to cook them real time as they should have been.

Love the food here! Finally, flavor in Bangor! Great menu, friendly service, and good prices.

Food is SOOOOOO GOOD!!! Staff was also very friendly!

The food is really good. A bit on the pricey side but delicious. The service has gotten better in the past few months. Papadum is yummy!!!

I was really looking forward to visiting here so we went on my birthday in May. I've had Indian in NYC, FL, DC, Ireland, and UK so I really wanted this to be good. First was the service was lacking. Second was the food was lacking. A party of four and nothing stood up. My wife even had hot tea and was disappointed. Only thing good was the naan. I'll give the buffet a try and see if it get's any better but I won't have company because everyone else agree's with Nancy and just says "No".
(2)Shahina S.
I don't know how the food is, but I can tell you that the hostess they have has a terrible attitude. When we arrived, she was too busy to take us to to our table, so she just pointed out the direction of the table. Then she came and literally threw the plates and silverware on the table. Greeting us was out of the question at that point. We decided that eating there will be totally unpleasant, as this was just the beginning. Where has the welcome smile and the pleasantness gone? Eating out should be a pleasant experience and there is no reason to deal with this arrogant behavior. Eat there at your own risk..
(1)Jojo W.
A bit of a whole-in-the-wall facility. The "host" had the opportunity to give us menus immediately when we walked in but instead waited a couple minutes...just odd. The server who came to take our order was just odd, showing up with a clipboard and acting like it was the first time he'd ever taken an order. But whoa!..food arrived within minutes and was pretty good. I ordered the lamb curry regular heat but it wasn't spicy at all. Hubby ordered chicken mushroom hot, and it was definitely hot. Despite the weirdness of the place, food and service was good and I'd come back.

Staff is fantastic! Food is amazing! Love it! I always love Indian food and this restaurant is no exception! Recommended by a friend, I am so glad! Will definitely be back!

Ok so I ate here a month ago and am now just writing a review. My family ate off the buffet and for their first time eating Indian food they liked it. Nothing was overly spicy but they did not really have much of a selection for vegetarians on the buffet. I ended up get the appitizer sampler platter and that was good to get a little taste of a lot of different things. The cheese on it was the best. I ordered the sag paneer off the menu with the garlic naan. YUM! It was good- as I compared it to some of the best Indian food that I have had in NYC. Also the naan was out of this world. The decor is interesting, it has an interesting mural of the Indian culture on one of the walls and the rest are fairly plain. The servers we ok. We had one that was super uninterested and we had to go up and get her on our own a few times. We ended up having another girl help us and she was very attentive. The prices were good, esp for the buffet- 9.95 for all you can eat lunch. I would do take out from here but not sure that I will go back in for food.

The service really sucks. We were the only ones in the place and I had to stand and wave to get attention. While waiting 10 minutes to order the ding dong waiter was cleaning tables and chatting with the chef. So why 4 stars?? The food was great from beginning to end. I was expecting bland and flavorless in Bangor but how how charade I was. Each dish had it's own distinct flavor, and all of it was fresh and plentiful. Fiddleheads was full for the evening, that's how we ended up here. I'm glad we came.

The food tastes outstanding but the service was so-so. The waiter was polite but seemed angry about something. I'm no authority on Indian cuisine but my wife ordered something different than I did but hers looked and tasted exactly like mine, but wasn't when a I asked. They were very busy when I was there so I can't fault them for being slow. We usually go there after the annual holiday parade and I should go there when it's not as busy to see if the service is the same. Bottom line: the food tastes authentic to me (but I'm no expert) and we were certainly stuffed when we left. The service just wasn't as good as it has been in the past.

Usually do not eat Indian Food when it is not in a Buffet setting as the spiciness preparation and quantity of food varies from location to location. However, my GF convinced me to stop by here on our way back from Acadia National Park to NJ by saying she would pick up the tab. Thus, without further delay, the positives: - Really good chutneys which we ate with the Chapati. - Lamb Vindaloo was prepared quite authentic (nice and spicy how I like it). The waitress had to confirm if "I like spicy foods". I told here "I know what this dish is". - The amount of basmati rice provided was very adequate. Most places just give you a little bit forcing you to pay more money for extra or buy naan in addition. - Overall the taste of the food was very good and I would definitely eat it again. Now the negatives: - Decorum was more to be desired. Simple decoration with a printed wall mural and a few paintings. Walls were mostly white and looked quite stained from the heat, spice, etc. - Price was a bit on the higher side given the amount of food provided for the entry. Think I counted maybe 7 or 8 pieces of lamb and 4 pieces of potato in the Lamb Vindaloo. - Chapati was super thin and they only gave one with the appetizer order. Also, usually it is eaten with the entree and it was brought to the table way before the main entree, thus, we ate it with the chutneys. In summary, the food was good tasting and authentic, however, be prepared to possibly still be hungry and spending a bit if not eating via their 'lunch buffet'. I would still come here if in the area as its much better quality food than all of the MSG laced chinese food in Maine.

This is good Indian food - I've eaten here twice, each time I've gotten the vegetarian dinner which comes with your choice of entree, sal shorba soup, one samosa (or onion bhajl), nan and desert of the day for $16.95. It's quite a good deal - recently I tried out the Karahi paneer - chunks of cottage cheese, green pepper sauteed in a Karahi (Indian wok) with onions, tomatoes, ginger and coriander. The menu proclaims it is made spicy - I found it anything but. It was quite enjoyable still - I loved the taste of the dish from it being cooked in the Karahi. The soup was really really good - perfect to fight the chilly flurries outside. The samosa was eh - it wasn't crispy and tasted like it was made hours ago, but the rest of the meal made up for this only downside.

Excellent! Authentic food. We were able to find the place easily on our way back from Acadia. Good service. Thumbs up.

I took my Dad here because he had never had Indian food. The place is definitely authentic. Start with Lassi- sweet yogurt drink with pistachios and rosewater. Lots of options for vegetarians ( I don't remember what I had, but it was good.) My dad had lamb and enjoyed it. I had Kheer (rice cooked in milk with raisins and nuts. Sounds weird, but delicious) for dessert and my dad had Kulfee (pistachio and cashew ice cream). Great prices, family owned and run. I hear the lunch buffet is great too. Here's their website: tasteofindiamaine.com

this restaurant is the standard by which i measure other indian restaurants. in other words, it's absolutely delicious. yes, the service is a little inattentive and awkward, but it's also very adequate (the food comes out fairly quickly), and i don't think i've ever had to flag anyone down, as others have mentioned. i'd much rather be left alone to my conversation and meal, anyway. if you can't find street parking, there's a parking garage behind the restaurant that offers the first two hours for free. i think the decor might've been redone since some of the other reviews, too - the walls are now filled with posters and wall hangings displaying stereotypical indian scenes ... so a little more tacky bollywood and less stately and subdued. (free) basmati rice and three chutneys - mint (almost neon green and not really so minty), tamarind (slightly sweet), and a hot red one - come with every meal, and are also included on the wednesday, thursday and friday lunch buffet from 11:30-2:30. unless your dish is normally prepared spicy (this is mentioned on the menu), they won't make the food hot unless you ask them to, so don't use that as a reason not to check this place out! my personal favorites are the samosas, nan, chana saag, aloo palak, and vegetable biryani. i don't know what they do to the creamed spinach base that makes it so much better than any other restaurant i've been to, but the creamy, perhaps slightly blended, mix is cooked and spiced to perfection in the chana saag and aloo palak. any of the entrees are great to get as takeout for multiple meals. i only eat the kheer when i go for the buffet, but it's also good - a nice subdued sweetness to top off the meal. their mango lassis are also the best i've ever had. not too thick, not too sweet, and jam-packed with ripe mango flavor.

AVOID! Stale, greasy & overpriced and possibly unhygienic (spent the whole day with a terribly upset stomach after eating there)
(1)Narendra R.
Worst indian food i ate till now. . Please dont waste ur money n taste. . Its definatly not taste of india. We ordered chicken biryani and it was like rice mixed with chicken curry. plz avoid.
(1)Rebecca R.
Get the chicken tikka masala. You won't be sorry. Then get a second order of it to take home because you will want to eat this for days!
(5)Kel N.
Pros: homemade tasty naan & kulcha. Homey Indian decor - nice tapestries on the ceiling. Good variety of vegetarian dishes. Cons: Disinterested server, small portions for the price, very salty & mild, even when spice was requested.
(3)Nisajith W.
Amazing flavorful food. A bit pricy but well worth it. If you like spicy food this is your go to place in bangor!!! Update 4/21/15: i took away 1 more star because they can be very unprofessional when it comes to notifying the customers when they close. They just close at times maybe snow or just personal reasons but they do not have the decency of updating their facebook or their generic voice mail informing the customer. It has happened a few times.
(3)Rory C.
Went for lunch today after a friend claimed it was the best Indian food he's ever had. A Taste of India did not disappoint! We started with the paneer pakora and roti and then the mango chicken, makhni chicken, and chicken tikka masala. Everything was delicious and we cannot wait to go back and try more!
(5)Jeff J.
Food was good. The Mexican waiter was engaging, but... Mexican cook also did a decent job with the authentic Indian food ha ha. I wasn't too happy that they overcharged from what the menu price said. Not the best place but okay.
(3)Scott F.
Went for lunch today with family. Just OK. Taste of food was good & memorable. Service was slow and inattentive. Portion sizes were small for price. A few of us left hungry. Would go back only if buffet was happening, which it was not when we stopped in.
(3)Banu S.
The only Indian restaurant for miles, but I would not visit it again. The rice was mushy, the chicken vindaloo tasted like yogurt chicken and the biryani was stir fried rice. On top of that, the food was totally overpriced.
(2)Erica L.
Yummy Indian food. Hits the spot and one of the best in the area.
(4)Eric S.
So thankful there's a good Indian restaurant in Bangor! I've had Indian at a lot of different cities and this place does not disappoint! My favorite dish is the Lamb Rogan Josh with a side of garlic naan. Yum!
(5)Mike M.
Last time I had Indian food was back in Berkeley. This place is just as delicious. Love the buffet.
