Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

This place holds a spot in my heart. When I first moved to Bangor, I came here and decided to sit at the bar. There I spoke with someone who told me about the apartment I eventually moved into. On my fist visit I was also impressed with the food and service. I believe the great service was due to sitting right in front of the bartender. For that visit we had some great bruschetta, sipped on wonderful wine and housed homemade lasagna. Each subsequent visit though left me wanting my first dining experience. Coming here several more times, I realized that the Homemade Lasagna was a special ...everyday. On one particular visit, I remember asking the waitress for a wine recommendation. I am not sure if it was the recommendation or the wine, but it was a very poor tasting wine. Their prices also struck a cord with me. I think the prices are a little high. While this place did have me coming back for more. After three visits I was done. Can anyone say Olive Garden?

I love this place. Incredibly flavorful, authentic Italian, Roman actually, food. The service is great too (Laura is my favorite). Massimo is the perfect host and knows his stuff. Simple delicious food from a team that loves what they do. You'll be shocked it's in Bangor. Try the Carbonara or Buccatini. The scota dito are great too. I would give 5 stars but that rating really needs to be reserved for an epic restaurant that leaves you on the edge of speechless. At Massimo's you'll be speechless while the food is on your table because it's irresistible.

A local friend brought me (an out-of-towner) here for dinner with another couple. We all had a great time, great meals, and the environment was at once upscale but relaxed and friendly. Meat filled Tortellini with sage butter were perfectly cooked. My date's tuna steak was delicious. Good wine list and cocktails. For decor, they even put brown paper on the tables as a nod to the authentic way you'll see in roman restaurants, where the waiters write the bill on the paper. As far as I could tell, it's about as good as it gets in Bangor!
(4)Todd S.
Best Italian in Northern Maine. started with fresh bread, with Italian butter - spiced olive oil. meat and cheese tray was very well selected. Have been there 2 times, each was worth the trip.

A treasure in Bangor!!! After several trips to the Bangor area for business the best part of the trip is Massimo's! As an Italian American who grew up with fabulous cooks, Massimo and his cuisine is as good or better(sorry, Mom!) than what I have eaten for years!! I don't have a favorite, because it's all wonderful I have yet, since they opened, ever had a bad meal. In fact, I have recommended it to many and taken clients there, as well. The food is amazing but i also had the pleasure of being greeted by Massimo who makes sure his customers are aways satisfied. It's a treasure in Bangor or anywhere for that matter!

Good spot up North!

The service was prompt kind. My family enjoyed the food although I did not get the impression that this is a family friendly restaurant. This is more like a date night place or where the women go to have a light bite to eat and a few drinks. The portions of the meals were just right and all of the items we ordered were cooked exactly as we ordered them. Descriptions of food items are spot on. I will go back again.

Lovely cute place in Maine. My boyfriend and I were brought here for dinner, we made reservations but still required to wait about 15 minutes for the table. The food is fabulous here. The mussels and caprese are a must get; caprese was something different that I never had before, it was served warm which means the mozzarella was melted on top of the warm tomato, it surprisingly worked. The mussels were tender and plump, ask for more bread and soak up all the spiced tomato-y broth. I had the Linguine alla Carbonara, extremely excellently. If you love bacon, you'll love this. The first bite was heavenly with a strong aroma of bacon and you can even taste it. The Linguine with Garlic Shrimp was good also, not as heavy as the carbonara but really flavorful. The only one bad thing about this was the amount of time it took for our food to arrive. We waited a good 30-40 minutes for the appetizers but the entrees came right as we were done with the appetizers. Sweet staff and great food. If I lived in Maine, I would come every month.

Came here for an anniversary dinner with my partner. She got a shrimp pasta dish, while I got a salmon penne dish. Both were very good and served right as they were done cooking. We got some coconut cheesecake as well and that was very good also. While it wasn't perfect, it is easily one of the best restaurants in downtown Bangor. I'd definitely come again.
(4)Norm G.
Service was very slow, salmon was mediocre and served finely chopped, not as I expected. The bread dipping oil was tasteless. A little over priced
(3)Mike A.
Northern Italian cuisine prepared properly, served graciously, superb ingredients! Massimo imports his own flour for his breads, and .... bellisimo! A jewel.
(5)John O.
I will say that being from the Tri-state I have had very good Italian food. This was right on par with the best. Food, service (Marilyn was great), and wine was awesome. I would definitely recommend this for anyone in the Bangor area.
(5)K C.
Thank you Massimo. I haven't had Italian food like this since I was a kid. My great aunts from Northern Italy would cook lunch for me every Friday, and Massimo's food reminds me of that time! The service is great, the waitresses are attentive and knowledgable about the food. They seem to have great respect for Massimo.
(5)Tami C.
We had an anniversary dinner and from start to finish it was a perfect!! Wines, appetizers, and the veal tortellini and braised lamb shank. Service was delightful. Most memorable!!!
(5)Chris R.
I read some of the negative reviews before going and was wary, especially when the hostess had us wait 15 minutes for a dining room that seemed 1/3 full, but I guess they had a lot of reservations because it was a Saturday night, and 1/2 way through my meal the place was full. Also, they may moderate the influx of customers to avoid the kitchen from being slammed all at once. But myself and my colleague had a good experience. Service was attentive, and the food was excellent. I tend to be critical because I eat out a lot for work. I really found it to be very nice. I would go back.
(4)Tony G.
We try to visit this great restaurant every time we happen to be in the Bangor area and every year after the common ground fair in Unity. The food is fantastic. We especially enjoy the carbonara, the lamb, all the soups, and the home made gelato.
(5)Paula V.
The most amazing Italian meal we have had in the U.S.! The food was consistently good from start to finish. The bread was freshly baked, the misto salad tasted like the ingredients were pulled straight from the garden. For our entree we chose a pasta special with a tomato sauce that rivaled the best restaurants in Rome.. The service was impeccable and the food and ambiance was worthy of a high Zagat rating! Highly recommend to anyone who has travelled and wants an authentic Roman experience.
(5)Kerry P.
Absolutely amazing Italian food! I had a delicious chicken dish that was stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach with mushroom sauce and bacon. It was heavenly! For dessert I had delicious blood orange gelato and my husband had cannoli , both were amazing! The only reason I am giving this place 3 stars is that we were told the salad was included in the meal but then we were charged an additional $7 for it . My chicken dish was already 21 dollars! If you eat here be aware this! Otherwise this place is great with amazing food.
(3)Terry H.
Good food but was made to wait at the bar when we saw many tables empty....like they wanted us to drink.....no reason for that
(3)Helen C.
Fantastic food, nice atmosphere and really great wine list. My family and I came in for a quick dinner before the theater and we were able to have salads and entrees and two drinks before our 7pm show. I had a great dish - linguine with shrimp. We all had pasta dishes which were super. Overall a great experience and would definitely return!
(5)Johnathan M.
Best restaurant in Bangor. I've had many of the dishes here and all have been excellent. Great ambiance and staff. Massimo's interactions and desserts that he personally brings out are a great perk to an already amazing meal. Make sure you try his bakery located right up the road!!!
(5)L O.
Husband and I were here in mid-October...what a hidden jewel in a depressed area. From the exterior one could never assume the intimacy and romance of the interior decor, the lighting, the architectural details, wall colors, even the wait staff in black, all create an escape from the outside. Our server, Savannah, was a breath of fresh energizing air and clearly felt enthusiastic about the chef and the quality of his food from the bread to the desserts. We each ordered the spinach salad which was a new and tasty interpretation on a standard-the portabella mushrooms were delicious. The lasagne was, truly, the best we have ever eaten. The meat sauce was rich with complex flavors of the meat combination, the cheese did not steal the show and cover the flavor....even the lasagne noodles melted in our mouths. An exceptional dining experience. I am confident we will recommend Massimo's to any friends traveling to Maine...and should we find ourselves in Bangor again...Massimo's will see us again.
(5)Morgan M.
I give a 2-star rating to any restaurant that does not cater to their clients wishes. Moral of the story: do not go there if you prefer your food prepared the way you like it. Actual conversation "Can I have my steak cooked medium please?" "No, the chef will only cook it (I think it was medium rare)". "Ok, but I really dislike medium rare, could he just leave it on for a few moments so that it's medium." "He will not do that." "Ok then." Get my steak, it is indeed medium rare and almost flavorless. Went once, will not be back.
(2)Eliza M.
I had a great meal at the bar the other night while I was in town. It has a pleasant ambiance, but I can see how it could feel crowded. Nice wine selection and a great menu. I had a special salad of baby arugula with shaved parmigiana and tomatoes - with a very light lemon dressing. It was superb (and huge!) Then I had an order of mussels for dinner - also DEFINITELY big enough to share as an appetizer or pair up for a dinner... All in all, the staff were friendly and I'm pretty sure the owner was sitting there greeting people the whole night. I think that's a nice touch! I'll probably be goin back! Andiamo!
(4)Lucy D.
Service was outstanding and the food was very good. Quaint spot in downtown Bangor offering many choices including fresh pasta and salads. The interior is nicely decorated but the noise level was much higher than expected- I think if they added a carpet or noise dampener, that would reduce the noise level.
(4)Sarah J.
This place is charming, the lighting is dim...I appreciate the ambiance (though it does get quite loud as tables fill up--the acoustics are a little harsh). The wine selection is very good, and their cocktails are pretty delectable. The pasta was perfectly cooked, but overall I didn't have that "wow" moment. While my friend's mussels were perfectly cooked, the shrimp in my pasta dish (Linguini con gamberi) was hard to chew and overdone, and my sauce was oily (I was hoping for more oil/acid balance with the tomato part of the sauce). Would go again, and for Bangor it is really lovely. We are lucky to have good dining downtown. Definitely call ahead for reservations on Fri/Sat.

Quaint looking location
(4)Doug J.
Best Italian food this side of Venice. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Our server had an encyclopedic knowledge of everything on the menu and the multitude of specials. Pasta carbonara was rich and smoky with the pasta cooked to a perfect al dente. Pasta with tiny clams was as delicious and memorable as a similar dish we had in Italy. From beginning to end it was the best authentic Italian meal we've had in the U.S.
(5)Matt G.
I went here with a group of 7. If I put my own experience it would be five stars...however the 4 out of 7 had to send their meals back....which is never a good thing. To the request of others....I'll add some more info.... It was strange from the start, a half full restaurant but we had to wait 20 mins at the bar to be seated. They would not shift tables to accomodate and we had to wait for the one large table to open. The server was about taking our order and leaving, to the point when someone asked if he could just order chicken parm, a staple for a italian restaurant, the server stated if its not on the menu you, the chef won't cook it. The four plates sent back where all over cooked, badly too. 2 rib eye steaks that were ordered medium came out well done and dry. Two who order a simple pasta/red sauce dish was either flashed in a oven or heat lamped to death. It's Bangor, ME....I respect that but I think it's best for small tables for 2...keeping it simple.
(2)A D.
Excellent. Perfected. Note the chef does not do substitutions. He won't change up his Italian creation... But its OK. He is great at it.
(4)Jon E.
A nice restaurant for Bangor perhaps. I felt the place pretended to be something special, but was not. It was not authentic, and I thought the food was average. The pasta was not homemade, and tasted like something that I would cook myself, and that doesn't say too much. I was hoping to get awed, and I was not.
(2)Ashley R.
This is my favorite restaurant in the Bangor area, by far. I love the atmosphere and the food and drinks are always great. We always try to go here when we are in town. It is on the expensive side, but well worth it!
(5)Rob L.
Fantastic food in a modern atmosphere. I got the herb-crusted pork they had on special...cooked to perfection! Even my salad was delicious. For desert, a fantastic pumpkin gelato! It was a bit pricey, but well worth it!
(4)Sarah E.
I have been here once before last year and LOVED it. HOWEVER, this place has sadly declined. For starters, the menu has not been changed at all! mix it up, you dont offer enough dishes to not have different selections at different times of the year. I came for an early dinner and had the salmon penne vodka. It was salty, as I had been warned, but that is not what bothered me. The fact that is was supposed to be smoked salmon and when it was put on the pasta it cooked it, giving it this weird half and half texture that did not fit right with the pasta. Fail. Sick with the carbonara- the best you will ever have. My mother had the chicken Massimo- ugh! If that dish is a reflection of the man, I am sorry! The bacon on the outside was super soggy, the "ricotta pesto" was very thick and dry and the mushrooms on it did not compliment the dish at all. WAY too much going on, on that dish, and not enough attention to the individual parts of it. Very disappointed in that dish. Bread before dinner was excellent as always, and I am wondering if the "pizza" bread is mearly the leftover pizza that they did not sell that day. I could care less cause the bread is so damn good. Specials sounded amazing and wish I had tried one now. ah well. There were A LOT to choose from as well. Nice selection of drinks, bartender makes them spot on. Service is nice- nothing to complain about and nothing to praise either. Decor- I wish it were a little more elegant. The room is almost confused as to be a nice sit down place and local trendy spot. Kind of plain inside, they need a little something and I am not quite sure what it is. Call day of to get a table about 1 hour in advance or so. If you go early there is no wait. oh and again, PLEASE CHANGE UP THE MENU!
(3)Kristin S.
I've only been here once, but it was one of the best meals I have ever had, and my husband thinks it IS the best meal he's ever had. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone. The bread basket was awesome. I tasted my husband's meal, the Pappardelle Alla Boscaiola, and it was amazing! I liked it more than my dish, the Bucatini All' Amatriciana, but my dish was still fantastic. I can't wait to go back!
(5)Renee H.
I had the most amazing Prime Rib! It melted in my mouth! The staff was so knowledgeable and friendly. We will be back!!!
(5)Kirk W.
True delicious Italian food, however I was very dissatisfied with the atmosphere. This place was very noisy for trying to be a upscale restaurant
(3)Neil J.
Ever want to relax in your hotel room in your PJs and have a good meal after running around all day? Well forget this place. They "don't do" take out. WTF? You sell more food....and don't have the hassle of a customer needing wait staff nor is space an issue. We were going to spend over 125 easily and now we won't. Can't speak for the food but the great service doesn't include just wanting some food. I just find this a bit odd.....but for you fine diners that think someone wanting take out from a nice restaurant is absurd....well I understand. And this review was from March (ish) maybe they've come to their senses by now?

My boyfriend was in Bangor doing a med school rotation last fall. We luckily tried Massimos for dinner one evening. Wow. I live in Boston and eat out probably once or twice a month. Not an expert but somewhat familiar with self-appointed delicious food. Sadly, I have not ever had food as delicious as Massimos in Boston. Nothing has come close and I've been searching since last September when I dined at Massimos! It's hard to recollect what we had at this point. I remember some meat and cheese selections and the mussels for appetizers. My entree was ravioli (?) with veal I believe. My boyfriend had something sausage-centered. Regardless, it was delicious. I would drive to Bangor right now for another meal if I had a car. I miss Massimos.
(5)Eileen B.
Food: Fettuccine Con Gamber - a little on the spicy side. Nowhere on the menu said it was going to have a kick, and the waiter didn't warn either. Rigatoni Alla Bolognese. The bolognese sauce was acidic and needed more salt, which was requested but our waiter never brought. Service: Apparently, the chef at this restaurant has an ego to match his physique! Forget about changing the pasta to go with sauce. Hubby and I both wanted Linguini to go with his bolognese and my Con Gamber, however we were told very "gently" by our waiter that we can't change a thing on the menu as the chef has spent loads of time pairing the pasta with the sauce!! Guess the chef was eating for us! We sat at the high top table/bar area, and our server was the bar tender as well, the service was extremely slow, and as we didn't order any "DRINKS", he wasn't at all attentive. Even if the best food was served, which it wasn't, I had better... the service was not up to par. Needless to say, I won't be returning.
(2)Daniel M.
Great surprise to find great Italian food in Bangor! There was a steady stream of various fresh baked italian breads with dipping oil. I had a spinach salad with roasted peppers and gorgonzola cheese. I enjoyed it and found a good ratio of greens to peppers, cheese and dressing. For my entree I chose Fettucini con Giamberi. (Shrimp with pepperocini) It was tasty. However I thought the portion was on the small side. Over all it was a great meal.

I had been wanting to try Massimo's for a while as I had heard great things about it. I had heard that making a reservation was recommended and so I called the day before but was told that I simply needed to call one hour ahead the day we planned to come, to make sure there would be a table available. This was a little unusual but turned out to be no problem and we had a table ready for our party of four when we arrived. The food, as was readily apparent from the menu, is more Northern and North Central Italian style with large hearty dishes and plenty of meats rather than simply a selection of pastas in fine sauces. Each person in our party chose a different entree and all of them were absolutely delicious. The portions were plenty and several of us took some leftovers home. Having been to Italy numerous times, I was somewhat wary of the gelato: Many places claim to serve "Gelato" and what they actually dish up is nothing remotely comparable to the real deal. But I was pleasantly surprised with Massimo's gelato: The chef has an authentic machine and makes it by hand. Again, it is the northern version which is frozen harder and a more solid consistency and slightly sweeter than the creamy southern style, but quite delicious. Overall, I would highly recommend Massimo's: The ambiance is upscale and delightful, the service is absolutely excellent, the choices of daily specials is literally mouth dropping in their variety, and the food is absolutely delicious. They also have an excellent wine list to compliment the food. Be sure to dress up, this isn't a place to show up in jeans and a tanktop, and be prepared to spend some cash, but it is worth it.

I just moved to Bangor and signed up for a Yelp account just to rate this place. This was my first night in town and I thought it seemed like a good way to start my life off here right and, let me tell you, it was. I could rave about the delightful food and wine that was well priced for what it was (linguine carbonara, portobello spinach salad, and a moderately priced bottle of Chianti) like everyone else here has so far but what moved this from a 4 to a 5 star was Massimo himself and all the wonderful cats who worked there. He wanders around with his glass of wine chatting with people (but not in an annoying when-is-this-guy-going-to-let-me-eat-my-food sort of way) and welcomed me to this little town with open arms. I think I am going to be very happy here.
(5)Lindsey J.
Massimo's Cucina Italiana is probably one of the better Italian restaurants in the US, and I have been to some five star Italian restaurants in the past. It seems really unusual that Bangor would have a restaurant like this, but I am glad that it does. The dishes are mainly salads, pasta and meat, but they also include some seafood. The fare is not straight out of Italy and does have an American bent to them, but it's done deliciously. Dessert is also worth putting the extra money out for. The wine list is well-chosen, but they also have a full bar and beer. It's located in the downtown area, but can be hard to find, so make sure you have good directions. Parking after hours is always available. I have no idea if it is open for lunch, but this would be a good option for those who want to try it out, but don't want to fork over the full price for dinner. There is a bar and lobby to wait in, and I would recommend you make reservations on a weekend night or opt to sit at the bar and eat. It's not a late night place so don't expect to eat after 9 pm. Dress and decor are upscale (someone wearing jeans would probably feel out of place here) but the service here is more casual than formal (still exceeding gracious, though). Prices are on the expensive side for Bangor, but for someone coming from NYC or Boston, this place is dirt-cheap (entrees $10-20/plate with appetizers $10/plate).
(5)Steve M.
Owner came over to table and made it a very enjoyable evening. Gave us some good advice on the food as well as the area. Nice antipasto dish was made up for us with various meats and cheeses. All had different entrees and everyone seemed to enjoy. Wine list was good and had a nice Valpolicello which was very tasty. Shared desserts all done very nicely with after dinner drinks. Very nice evening.
(4)Corey S.
Nice atmosphere and great food. Romantic lighting and cozy seating. They have an extensive wine list and GREAT bread. Next door there is a bakery that I have yet to check out, but after tasting the bread in the restaurant, I'd like to visit! This was my first time visiting Massimos and I had the gnocchi with truffle oil and the flourless chocolate torte for dessert. The gnocchi was absolutely delicious! The chocolate torte was pretty decent as well, but a little bit dry. The service was great too- our waitress was friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend!
(4)Justin S.
While the food is wonderful here, getting a table here is the biggest hassle I have faced. You either need to take reservations or not, as showing up to an empty dining room and being told it's an hour for a table is just plain irritating. Most places that do 'call ahead seating' give preference to dinners that are already there and willing to pay. Let me know when you change your system and I might consider trying again.
(2)Christi H.
Excellent fine dining!! Went wine tasting at Bangor Wine and Cheese next door, then finished off the evening here. Lovely wine and great friendly service. I ordered the Penne Salmone (smoked salmon in a vodka cream sauce). I wanted to like my plate clean. The Chef came out after dinner and asked how everything was and gave us three different gelato flavors for free! Very romantic.
(5)Jim B.
The food here is simply excellent. You will not find a better Italian restaurant in Bangor, or in Maine or maybe anywhere. The wine selection is also quite good. Beware it is quite expensive, but given the quality it remains a good value.
(5)Steve B.
Massimo's is, in a word, outstanding. I don't have any hesitation in saying this is the best restaurant in Bangor, and...dare I say it...possibly one of the best I've been to in Maine. What a pleasure to have this place open in my neighborhood. The food...oh, my, the food. This is Italian comfort food of the highest order: impeccably prepared, simply presented, confident and exquisite. The first time I was here, I had the osso bucco...it made me wish I could write poetry. The broth was fantastic, the shank was melt-in-your-mouth culinary velvet, the gremolata was great, and the vegetables were crisp and perfect. To top it all off, I got an absolutely massive portion: I ate my fill, brought the rest home, and got a second meal of it the day after. This restaurant is worth visiting for the bread basket alone. Pillowy focaccia, dense and chewy ciabatta, everything freshly baked. The chef is rightfully legendary for his pizzas. I have simply never had anything bad here. I've never had anything even ordinary. It's all stupendous. The service is friendly, swift, and attentive, and the space is gorgeous. Good selection of wines. No question: this place is as good as it gets in Bangor.
(5)Lauren R.
Cute ambiance - doesn't feel like Bangor! Expensive for the area - entrees are a little pricey and salads are separate, etc. Got tortellini w/ spaghetti sauce and it was DELICIOUS!
(4)James V.
I never been to maine or to Massimo Cuccina but I do know Massimo from jersey and I can tell he's an excellent chef. I used to go to his bakery in Montclair every morning where I enjoyed a croissant with an amazing Macchiato. I really miss his Bakery and all those chats we used to have about life in Montclair
(4)Nora S.
The most delicious food ever. The atmosphere is warm, chic, and romantic. The staff is friendly and attentive. Not to mention professional. The bread and olive oil dipping sauce is amazing, the drinks are outstanding, the salads fresh and flavorful, if they have the arugula salad special I highly recommend that. I've had the lamb, and the linguine alla carbonara, and both were really tasty. Dessert, of course, was on par with the rest of this outstanding meal. Not only the best in Bangor. Massimo could hold his own among the many zagat reviewed places in Monterey/Carmel where we used to live in Cali.
(5)Colin B.
After reading all the positive reviews about Massimo's, I just had to give it a try.. even after a 7 hour drive from the Canadian Maritimes. Unfortunately, just after our server brought the deservedly-famous bread, I started to feel really unwell. We asked if there was a chance that we could take our orders to go rather than try to stick it out and our server Christine was very obliging. I must say the food quality didn't suffer in the least from the short trip to our motel. Everything was very tasty, I especially enjoyed the mushroom sauce and the stuffing in my Pollo alla Massimo and my dining partner loved her tilapia with lemon and capers. Thanks so much to Massimo and staff for accomodating our unusual request (and on a very busy night.)
(5)Alan K.
Some of the finest Italian food I have had anywhere and the service was extremely friendly. Price was very reasonably and I will return anytime I'm in Bangor.
(5)Rebekah S.
Bustling, modern but quaint atmosphere (although a bit loud due to the acoustics). Food was basic and bland- and not in an authentic, pure and simple way. Our table had a pasta & mussels dish, tilapia, sausage and creamy sauce over pasta, and clam pasta dish. Everyone agreed the dishes were mediocre. Perhaps if someone ordered the pollo wrapped in prosciutto. etc., it would have had more flavor. Maybe the chef had an off night. Considering how $$$, I'm not inclined to try again right off.
(2)Julie W.
Best food in town, hands down! Massimo's passion for food is clear and it comes through in his dedlicious meals. This family run restaurant takes pride not only in the food, but also the front of house. Massimo's wife instantly makes you feel welcome as you walk in the front door, and her well trained staff provides exceptional service. Whatsmore, the atmosphere is vibrant - this restaurnat is a great place to go to relax, be taken care of, and enjoy outstanding food that will impress.
(5)Joe H.
Excellent! Best Italian restaurant around. Really. Lots of off-menu specials, plus fairly deep menu of classic Italian fare. Wish I had a week's worth of business in Bangor, enough time to try everything. Nice wine, and interesting beer as well. One group of lawyers seemed a bit loud, but otherwise the environment was pleasant. Service was great and attentive. Can't say enough positive about the experience. To be fair, if you're expectation of good Italian food is corporate chain variety at family prices, go somewhere else. Take somebody special to a special meal here.

My wife & I have been to Massimo's several times, including last night. As always they deliver a spectacular experience from the time you walk in 'til the time you walk out. In my opinion, it presents a "modest-but-classy" decor that accommodates anything from a cocktail at the bar to casual dinner or even a special/formal occasion. The staff is warm & inviting (especially Christine) & the food comes over the top every time. The quality shows in all the details and none is spared, beginning with the olive oil & the bread, the olives, the meat & cheese selection, the array of salads, and last, but certainly not least, the entrees. Whether it is a seemingly simple pasta dish or a rustically accented lamb shank or the richly flavored stuffed quail, any dish is sure to please your palate. As long as you feel good food is worth paying for - skip the olive garden and get a feel for high quality home-cooked Italian and go to Massimo's.
