I'm glad I came here! Live lobsters that you can buy the pound and they will steam it for you for free ! Much cheaper than any place in town. McLaughlin charges to stem them.

Oh deal lord, new owners and simply terrible food an attitudes! Captains use to have the second best lobster roll in town (second to eagles nest). Now it's among the worst. Its this skimpy thing which tastes like frozen meat and loaded with lettuce. Their prime rib also use to be yummy. Now it is so over cooked its grey and its cooked in 100% soy sauce??? Gross! I thought maybe it was just growing pains with the new owners so I went back for a second chance. Just as bad, after two decades of being a semi frequent patron I won't be going back :(. The only thing going on at this severely outdated restaurant was at the bar where you will find plumbers crack and a bunch of drunks stumbling around. Seriously?

Came up to the area for a wedding and our lovely bartender Angel at the Holiday Inn Bangor recommended we come here. We sat at the quaint little bar in the back on a Friday night around 8pm and we lucked out and got Donna, a 26 year pro behind the bar at Nick's. She was a real gem and took great care of us. Chowder was good, lobster roll was very good and the orange creamsicle cheesecake she recommended was awesome. Stop in and give Donna a high five. She deserves it

I went in for lunch. I was immediately seated and the waitress took my order. I ordered the lobster roll with fries. It was promptly delivered, I did not realize the lobster roll was served mixed with mayo; I was expecting hot butter. I did not ask specifically for butter and had never tried a lobster roll with mayo so I ate it. It was very good and the fries were hot. The price was on par for lobster; $14.99 for the roll and fries. The service was fast and courteous and the atmosphere was calm and relaxed. I would go here again.

Hesitant at first. Treasure at Captain Nick's. Seafood is what you should order. Nothing else. You would waste a trip to a very good, if not great fish joint for chicken, bawk. Service was swift and attentive. Ambience was ignored so as to better appreciate the meal. Stuffed haddock with scallops, lobster, and shrimp with very little breading. Lobster roll and fish chowder, awesome. Great menu. Value out the tail. Will stop when in town next. Go good for less, right here.

Meh. I went on my bday with my grandmother. I was craving a lobster roll but the waiter told me that it comes with a lot of mayo so I decided to get the lazy mans lobster dish. meh again. it was lobster sitting in a plate of butter which just tasted and looked oily. Lobster was ok, seemed ok but didnt have that great fresh taste that I was looking for. I think this one was picked and put in a friged over night maybe and then reheated. My grandmother had the canadian blt and the roll was HUGE. It was actually most of the sandwich and had 3 little slices of canadian bacon. She ended up taking the roll off. She also had the haddock chowder and said it was very good. The decor was the same that I remember as a child and not up to date. Also there was a fly buzzing around and it would not leave and grossed me out. Service was EXCELLENT though. Had a wonderful waiter who was great. If I go back I would try a new place.

Had a GREAT lobster roll for lunch; friendly, relaxed atmosphere; good service; have dined here many times and never disappointed.

I am giving 3 stars, but would be willing to give it 3.5. The menu is large in variety, but not everything is that great. I'm not a huge seafood fan but everyone says they have great seafood and enjoy the seafood they order when I'm with them. The ambiance is not so great - it was a real turn off to me the first time I ate there - especially the train area. I still don't like the train area, but the other parts of the restaurant are just comfortable despite not being very updated or attractive. When my uncle came to visit for a long weekend we ate here twice within 3 days - I took him the first time b/c he wanted good seafood and then he requested to go back!

A-Ok. Indoor restaurant with a large cabin-like feel to it. Price was reasonable. Don't know why the place was quiet with only a few customers on a Saturday night at 8:30pm? Ordered an entree that included a couple pieces of lobster claws, haddock, and scallops. The seafood was partially soaked in water with some butter and oil. Not too flavorful but the seafood was fresh. Positive: Our server was a Yankee fan and a good guy, lol.

The haddock chowder is awesome! Big chunks of fish with potatoes and a light sauce. We both ordered grilled haddock with crab sauce, $16. It was an amazing portion of fish and really good flavor! It came with 2 sides and a roll. The service was very attentive and efficient. The decor is nothing special, but it is clean. We'd go again!

Wife and I enjoyed the haddock chowder for lunch. There was plenty of meat but the broth was watery and unremarkable. Just a little butter/flour rue would have knocked it out of the park.

Captain Nick's is a Bangor land mark but with new ownership comes changes..........and not for the good. The location is prime, having easy access and good parking. The staff is friendly and attends to your needs. The big issue is that the place needs to be completely renovated. It is completely outdated and the new owners are not making the grade. I recommend going up the street to Nicky's. Better food and much cleaner.

They have great seafood at low prices. The lobsters are a particularly good deal, especially if you order the twin lobsters for two people. The fried seafood is really tasty. They also have some of the best french fries around, the kind that are still good even when they get cold. The dining car attached to the restaurant is a unique touch, sit out there if you can! The staff is attentive and patient. I once went there with a group of four, and did not realize that it was almost closing time. We still got attentive service and weren't really rushed even though it was well past closing when we finished. I try to visit Captain Nick's whenever I'm in Bangor.

Did I just eat in a train? I just ate in a train!!!! In all seriousness, though, huge surprise at the quality of the food. Went out for lunch with the girlfriend and her parents, did not expect to get good seafood in Bangor, and... wow! We had the fried clams appetizer to start. Sometimes clams can be prepared badly and turn sweet, but these were friend and breaded, still maintaining their salty taste. Just awesome. For a main course, I had the cajun shrimp wrap. I have no idea what was in it besides the shrimp. It started out as one of the better things I've had lately, and the deeper in I got, the more sick I was feeling. It tasted really good, but it was really rich, for some reason. Anyway, I'd get it again. This isn't helping anyone. They have free refills on soda, the menu is priced very reasonably, and it's an awesome place in Bangor to go eat that isn't a chain restaurant. That should be reason enough to check it out. PLUS - they have an old train car as a dining hall, it's awesome!

The best thing about Captain Nick's are the low low prices. The food, service and decor, however, match those prices. It is basically a seafood diner: You can go in and sit down and have a quick lunch or supper without much outlay of either time or cash. But if you are looking for delicious Maine seafood, this is NOT the place to go. It also isn't a good place to take a girl on a first date to impress her or where you want to take your in laws lol. But if you're looking for a quick bite to eat without breaking your wallet, there's nothing particularly wrong with it. *Note: During one of my visits, the soda machine wasn't working at all and when the waitress discovered that they had brought us completely flat drinks with no carbonation, she simply brought us water without apology or offering anything to make up for it.

My wife and I were passing through Bangor on a month-long trip of Eastern Canada. We were looking for a good fish place to eat after having been spoiled by delicious seafood on Prince Edward Island. After reading the positive reviews, we gave this place a try. The price for lobster is super reasonable and the lobster that I had, which was only two claws since it part of a medley, was delicious. I ordered the seafood medley. I actually expected the seafood medley to be a bit better than it was. The price was good and It was good, just not great. But the haddock chowder on the other hand was spectacular. That is definitely worth ordering. I wish I had ordered the lobster roll with a cup of chowder instead of what I ordered. Oh well. We also ordered a side dish of mussels and they were cooked very well. But for some reason I didn't care for the dipping sauce that accompanied it. It was butter but it was mixed with something else, perhaps a broth. I prefer to dip my lobster, scallops, and mussels in pure melted butter, nothing else. The mussels would have been perfect in my book with that change, but as they were it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. All in all this is a good place. I have the sense that it is better than our experience or perhaps we got the wrong menu items for our tastes. We would return.

I get to visit Bangor about 10 times a year and usually go to Captain Nicks about twice a year. Last night was my best experience ever! I had the surf and turf which consisted of a really juicy and tender 8 ounce steak, and a one and a quarter pound soft shell lobster along with two sides... All for the price of $21! What a deal! And the service was quick and efficient and the drink list was satisfactory. I will definitely be going back to Captain Nicks on my next visit to Maine!

Wife and I stopped by Captain Nick's on our way up north and I found this place on my phone when I searched for best lobster roll in Bangor. It was an easy enough drive off of I-95 and we were both hungry for some seafood. We were warmly greeted by the hostess when we walked through the door and quickly seated. The restaurant is set up like a diner with several different rooms. I ordered the lobster roll with fries and she got the crab roll with side vegetable, which was green beans. Everything tasted fresh and the seafood was excellent. Both the crab and lobster were plentiful, and the green beans were fresh and crispy, not from a can. The waitress was efficient and we were in and out quickly, as we needed to get back on the road again. While the decor is not fancy, Captain Nick's does crab and lobster very well and I would not hesitate to return anytime I am back around Bangor.

So far great! The steamer mussels were good, done in wine and garlic and the lobster stew was excellent... cream and sherry with large pieces of lobster.....Looking forward to the lobster roll and baked Haddock!

10/10/14 lunch her was very good both food and service. The lobster roll is the best bang lobster item on the menu. The single lobster and lazy mans lobster are double the price than in Bar Harbor 40 mile away.

  • Chantal G.

The haddock chowder was great, with a fist-sized lump of fish floating on top. Got the 2.5 lb lobster, and it was delicious but just a tiny bit undercooked. I had eaten all but the tail, and the waitress insisted on taking it back. 5 minutes later I had a huge platter with another lobster in front of me and 3 additional tails, all split and cleaned. The chef came out and personally apologized; no bullshit excuses, just an apology. That is old school customer service, and smart business, people. PS-parking was ample.

Came here for dinner with my fiance. The decor made me feel like I was sitting in Captain Nick's kitchen which I thought was nice and quaint. The restaurant seems huge. There were 2 other tables occupied when we arrived and 1 more came as we were eating. The service was a little slow, but after a 6 1/2 hr drive from Ct I was famished, so I may have been feeling a bit impatient. There were several specials listed on the board including a lobster dinner for $15.99. I decided to go for it sicne I had never had a whole lobster before. Luckily the place mat doubled as a "how to eat lobster" instructional manual b/c otherwise I woudl've been lost. The loster came with a choice of potato (baked or fries) and vegetable (salad, cole slaw, veggies). I went with the house salad and both me and my fiance were glad I did. It was simple yet fresh. the ranch dressing I ordered was good too! The best house salad either of us has had in a while. My baked potato was good too. Gotta love those Maine baked potatoes! My lobster was awesome! Nice big and lots of meat. My finace ordered the Haddock chowder and Crazy wings. He wasn't a huge fan of the chowder b/c the broth was watery instead of thick. I thought it was great and liked the fact that it had lots of meat, so I gave him my house salad and ate his chowder : ) The wings were good! Remidned me of a sweet and sour sticky wing. Very good and I liked the fact that they were baked not fried. All in all a gerat dining experience. Yayy Captain Nick!

The food is amazing! I ordered the fried mix plate (haddock, clams, & cup of lobster stew. First of all, the lobster stew was unbelievable. I don't I had ever seen so much lobster within lobster stew. It was full of flavor and didn't disappoint to excite the taste buds. The mixed fried plate was a choice of two out of three (haddock, shrimp, clams). I chose haddock and clams. Again, it didn't disappoint! The haddock was very flakey and light. The batter was nice and light and didn't interfere with the taste of the fish. The clams were delicious as well. I don't think there was one item that wasn't an excellent representation of New England Style seafood!

After landing in BGR, I wanted some good food, and I had intended to go downtown to find some. A bunch of buddies were all taking cabs to get to a destination downtown, but I had to find an ATM first. The ATM at the airport was broken, and the next closest one was a mile away. On foot, I found the ATM, and it also stirred a hunger inside. Upon seeing a Hannaford's, I decided to do a little shopping. I also wanted some New England-style hot-dog buns and some Moxie, so I walked from the airport to Hannafords. After purchasing my much desired loot, I spotted Captain Nick's as I was about to play a game of human Frogger crossing the road. Walking inside, the decor was exactly what you expect from a seafood joint: Lots of nautical pictures and trinkets, somewhat dating the place. I was seated immediately and my server, Emily, was on her "A" game. She gave me a menu and was perfect with regards to what you want with service. My water glass never went empty. I was checked in on regularly, and the order was perfect. I ordered the steamers (clams) for an appetizer. It was about a pound of long-neck, full belly goodness with broth and melted butter. They were perfect. For the main course, the daily special was the twin lobsters. They were about a pound a piece, served with your choice of potato, fresh veggies, or a salad. I chose cole slaw and the veggies, which was green beans. The presentation was perfect. Two beautiful lobsters cooked to perfection, and a huge cup of butter. The green beans were fresh and had a wonderful coating of melted butter. The cole slaw is exactly how I like it. Service was everything. If you read any of my reviews, I find this one of the most important aspects of dining out. The food can be great, but if you have poor service, it takes away from the meal. That did not at all happen here. I left a very large tip for her. I do not frequent New England any longer, although I am from here. I will recommend Captain Nicks. The food was great, the prices were reasonable, and the service was excellent. I'll be back and I will recommend this place to anyone!

First stop after checking in to my hotel. I was looking for seafood being I was in maine and found captain nicks close to my hotel. Inside a little out dated but the food made up for it. I ordered the lobster dinner. It was only 17.99 and was a whole lobster with bake potato and side salad. Recommend this deal to anyone who has lobster taste but on a budget.

Great pub seafood. We loved our lobster rolls with sweet potato fries. The oysters were very fresh.

This was a good experience for me and the family. I had the lazy man's lobster, it is much more expensive so you know (I did not when I ordered it, but I roll with it). I had lobster stew first and it was a little thin. My wife had chowder and it was a little thin as well, so hmmm. The lazy lobster was good and had nice flavor. It is a nice local joint.

Great...if you love mayo. The lobster roll had so much mayo I used the bread to wipe off the mayo. It was disgusting. The cole slaw was strips of plain cabbage with so much mayo on it it was completely white - no green to be found. The haddock chowder was like straight cream and water with big chunks of haddock in it. No flavor - all cream. What's up with these reviews? I'm passing through Bangor I should be able to trust yelpers but this place is filled with fake reviews. Truly disappointed in my fellow yelpers.

As we were traveling through Maine on my way to Prince Edward Island, we decided that we would sleep the night in Bangor. After some research on some good local seafood places, I wanted to give Captain Nick's a shot. We arrived with some good expectations, and the waitress greeted and seated us very nicely. I ordered a cup of the haddock chowder and the stuffed shrimp, only to become disappointed after I tried the haddock chowder. It was very watered down and tasteless, and the haddock was as if someone took some canned fish and put it in a broth. Okay, so a bad start. Maybe it was just the wrong choice to order the chowder. Then my main meal came, the stuffed shrimp. I thought it was decent, a little bland, pretty much nothing to write home about. My other friends ordered the shrimp scampi, lobster, and the greek haddock. The scampi was one of the better dishes that we ordered there. The shrimp was well-cooked, and the pasta went well with the ingredients. However, it still could've used some flavor. Since it was more of a lobster house, I still had some belief in the lobster dish. When the lobster came, it looked good, but as soon as I tasted it, it was very disappointing. It tasted as if the lobster was previously cooked, stuck in the freezer, and then warmed up to go on your plate. As for the haddock, it was so rubbery and bland that nobody could finish it. Being that this was in Maine, I had pretty high hopes for the seafood being fresh as if it just came from the boat. I guess I was wrong. It was just the opposite. One thing I can say is that the service was excellent, and one major aspect of dining in a restaurant is the service. The waitress was always checking on our food, topping off our drinks, just making sure everything was good. If the service was not as good as this, I would not even think about giving this place three stars, let alone even one. I have traveled through many states and countries trying different foods, and this place really was not expected to be this disappointing, especially for a great state such a Maine. I have to say that my local seafood restaurant in Pennsylvania had better food than this, and it is nowhere near any ocean. So if you decide to come and eat at a seafood restaurant in Bangor, I would highly advise not to go to Captain Nick's, but to go elsewhere. The service was the only excellent aspect about this place.

You really would never think that in Bangor, ME you would find a really good selection of seafood when you could take the trip to Camden or Belfast right on the water. But, if you are in the Bangor area, then you need to dine here. The Haddock chowder is simply one of the best that I have tasted ... It its light but loaded and packed with flavor. The lobster rolls are delicious and very fairly priced. Only item that I would rate less than par would be any of the steak products but, I guess if I was to order steak, then I should go to a steakhouse. The service its great here, friendly and attentive and very kid friendly. I think the only thing I would change its a slight update in the decor but this its also what gives it some charm. Very recently I sent some corporate vp's to this restaurant when they asked me for good seafood. When they first got there, they were scared by the look of the place but were very pleasantly surprised by the food and service. So, to sum up, if you are looking for some good seafood with a small town feel, Captain Nick's its the place for you.

I make an annual trek to Maine on vacation and usually spend most of it in the Bangor area. I have a very strong seafood fix that needs attending to and Captain Nicks is usually on the agenda. The food is very good. I can't say there is anything that makes it exceptional but if you're in Bangor, it's certainly convenient and there are two things you can be assured of: 1. You will NOT leave hungry. More than likely, you'll leave with a take home box. 2. You will get your money's worth. Prices are very reasonable for a nice dining experience. I have found service to be attentive and friendly. The decor is 70's and could use updating a bit but let's face it, we're not there to gawk at the furnishings now are we? As for the food, I often get whole lobster, which has always been prepared perfectly. I can also recommend the scallops and stuffed haddock. The menu has numerous offerings to choose from including things for land lovers (steak and chicken) and a child's menu. Great place to take the family and their performance very consistent! You can rely on them to produce a great meal every time.

This is the type of place where you have to know what to get and take it for what it is. If you do so you will have a great experience. I have been coming here since I was very young, and yes the decor hasn't changed much since then probobly, but who cares? It's a down home Maine family restaurant with fresh seafood and low prices. If you are expecting fine dining or a modern dining room, this isn't it. The fresh crabmeat rolls and the homemade fish chowder are the best things on the menu. Try the mini shore dinner(cup of fish chowder and lobster roll) a great deal. The shrimp cocktail(huge), french onion soup and sea scallops are all delicious as well. Stay away from the luncheon baby shrimp scampi(bland) and disappointing cuts of steak. Also, try the hole in the wall bar in the back for very cheap drinks and friendly atmosphere/bartenders. Stick with the seafood and booze.

So based on the reviews I decided to stop in and have dinner. I was with a couple of friends that were less than enthusiastic getting dining advice from the Internet. We were there early on the evening and the place was very quiet. We ordered a couple beers (of which they have a good selection). Mine arrived ice cold. The other was room temperature. Not a good start. The other guy ordered a MTN Dew. Kind of hard to screw that up. Then diner arrived. I had the lobster roll and fish chowder The fish chowder was excellent in flavor but a little thin. I would order this again with out reservation; it was that good. Then the lobster roll arrived. Oh my what a roll it was. There was no less than half a lobster stuffed into a hotdog bun. It was so fresh and very delicious. The cole slaw was okay but could have used more horseradish. The fries were hot and fresh. All in all I will go back if I'm in the area.

I like this place because everyone is so friendly. They have free wifi too and no one pressures you to move on. I love the food and I love the fact that no order is a special order. You get it the way you like it! They cater especially to travelers and have a special place in their hearts for the Air National Guard!

I stopped in for a late lunch saw the commercial for sale sign & panicked but after Sandra told me they were purchased but staying open & even being renovated. Excellent as I will be back! Single lobster for lunch. It was delicious! Even cut the claws & tail partially! Thank you! Next time I will bring the wife...!

They advertise a deli with sandwiches, lunch meats, etc., and they have Boars Head products! I tried to get a sandwich from said deli (located in the entrance of the restaurant) at 3:15PM on a Saturday only to find out that the deli isn't open at 3:15PM despite the restaurant being open until 8PM. To make this constructive criticism, I suggest that you either add a full time staff to run the deli, or just close the deli and add seating for the restaurant. I appreciate the attempt to open a deli with quality meat, but clearly the deli is not a priority if it sits there for 5 hours unoccupied while the restaurant is still open.. it's just taking up space.

I grew up in NH and know my lobster quite well and I must say that Captain Nick's has some of the best lobster I have ever had. Not only is the lobster itself fantastic but so is everyone that works there. They're kind and always making sure your meal is as perfect as possible. I recommend this restaurant to any on the lobster spectrum, from aficionado to novice. I'll definitely be coming back here on my next foray to Bangor.

This was an awesome recommendation from the front desk at the hotel we were staying at. We went in tired and hungry and left full and satisfied. We had a great waiter named Nick who was amazingly attentive and helpful . We had the fried haddock. It was fresh and perfectly tender. The breading was perfectly crisp and not greasy. The rolls and salad was an amazing compliment . The blue cheese dressing was delicious . This was a wonderful place to eat and recharge.

this is a little spot but had great food. we shared a full lobster as an appetizer, then i had the lobster roll as a meal. the lobster on both was delicious. the service was good. a lot of senior citizens filed this spot for some reason, nothing of it, just an observation haha.

Stopped in and ordered the lobster roll (butter not mayo) and a cup of haddock chowder. The lobster roll was excellent so I ordered a second. This could be the greatest roll I have had to date. The chowder was good and chunky but it was sort of bland and not very creamy. That could be how it should be and for $4, it was a great starter. I would definitely recommend this place if you want a cold beer and awesome lobster roll. I can't comment on the rest

The food was average at best. I had lasagna with sausage and a house salad. The vegetables were wilted and the ranch dressing left a lot to be desired. The lasagna was ok, not over cooked, lots of cheese, meat and sauce, but it didn't have any spices. The sausage was completely bland. My husband had the tuna melt and french fries. He was happy with it, but it was nothing special. We both had draft beers that were very good. The service was very good. From the greater to our waiter everyone was very nice, happy and helpful. The restaurant was also very clean.

My first lobster roll. And to be perfectly candid I'm not the world's biggest fan of lobster. Mindy our waitress was a delight. Lots of great information about the local community. They feature Sam Adams which is a big plus. The dried cherry salad was delicious.
