Very well prepared menu!! We got he tater tots with 3 different dipping sauces which was my favorite! Then tried the cream of crab soup which was creamy and full of crab. For our meals we got crab cakes and asparagus, prepared perfectly! My man got the angus burger and sweet potato fries also great! The service was outstanding! Highly recommend!!

I took my coworkers here for a few drinks. The place has a classy, trendy decor. The bar is large and has enough seating, especially because the place is always empty. The staff was polite, friendly and attentive. So why would we leave after one round? THE PRICES $$$. It would not be a big deal if we were in a more expensive neighborhood, but it doesn't make sense to spend around $28 less tip for a round between 4 of us when you can go anywhere else in Towson and spend about $10. I get that the place is trying to be upscale and cater to an older crowd. The problem is that crowd simply does not exist in that area of Towson and the place is empty. If the Towson Tavern was packed, we may have stayed. They need to try and draw in a crowd with better drink specials. Maybe they can try specials that appeal more to an older crowd, like wine, or martini specials. Another idea and I am not sure if it is allowed in MD, but there was a bar back in NJ that only allowed 25 year old+ in that was in a college neighborhood and they did alright. Bottom line is with those kind of drink prices, people will go else where, especially with all the options with in walking distance. Like another reviewer stated, it is only a matter of time before this becomes another college bar if they don't do something to get people in the door and keep them there. After the first round when people leave, no longer wonder why, I just threw it out there.

A welcome addition to the uptown Towson area! Very affordable for a nice upper scale meal. I was very pleased today when my mom and I stopped in for lunch. Very cozy interior for a sit down meal with a nice bar area as well. We both enjoyed our sandwiches and the side salads that came with them. Good coffee too!

Towson Tavern is a great place to go for a casual fun meal. I would recommend eating at the bar, super attentive bar staff, great ambience and you can watch a game if so inclined. We had their crab bisque, which is probably the best any where. More crab in that than you can imagine. Make sure you get a loaf of their fresh bread to go with it. The arugala salad is also great, and has the world's best goat cheese, that will just melt in your mouth.

Foodie meets picky eater.. A menu that even a picky eater would be able to find something on. Full bar with great happy hour prices. The tavern was very minimal, but I think that adds to its charm.

Where's the love from yelpers for this place? Wife and I enjoyed a great meal on a recent Friday night. For appetizers, we had crab soup and stuffed zucchini. The creamy crab soup was fantastic. Full of crab, cream and delicious. Zucchini was very well prepared. I had the special which was halibut. Very well cooked, nice grapefruit sauce. Wife had short ribs. They were fantastic. Melt in your path. Reminiscent of grandmom's cook all day pot roast. Two issues that prevent 5 stars. One is the noise. It is a loud happy hour. Two, very slight service issue. After clearing our apps, the waitress did not bring new silverware.

Been here twice, a year-plus apart. First time was memorable because I had just had a collision with a deer and needed a stiff drink and a meal and happened to be in Towson. Bingo. Excellent steak and wine. Fast forward to this past weekend. My wife and I opened the bar at 5 p.m. and were sort of between hungry and not so. Hence my choice of two appetizers, cream of crab soup and rubbed steak. The soup had more lump crab than most crab cakes and was perfect. The steak appetizer was perfect sliced and rubbed loin of some kind and was also outstanding. Have to figure if the kitchen cares that much about $8 starters it's not too shabby with the rest of the food. Fine place and trumps all the chain competition big time in Towson, which to be honest, is a little behind the curve for dining. But this grade is on merit.

I went with high hopes - the valet parking is a nice touch - and we arrived early for a reservation - and to our surprise we were seated. Then it took 20 minutes and a trip to the hostess to get someone to actually wait on us with the excuse that no one knew who should wait on us, which prepared us for the service that continued to be bad the rest of the evening. When a kitchen is shared you need to be careful about food service - food is brought to the main dinning area by a runner who stands there with the food until he can get the waiter to take the food from him - since we sat directly across from the location to bring the food i got to see this all night. So it was no surprise that our food arrived not hot since it sat wating for the misterious waiter to show back up - a hint to management pagers could really avoid this Towson really needs a good place to eat, and everyone i talk to about this place gives the Towson Tavern credit for just opening and getting it right - well its long past the time that excuse can be used any more they just are not being managed correctly and a manager was no where to be found on the Saturday night when we looked for one. People have said they have better experienes for lunch so maybe if you are in the area take a chnace for lunch but beware of the dinner since you will more than likely be disappoined - we were and would not go back

I grew up going to the rec room, and played pool where the Towson Tavern is now, so I was pretty surpised to see a "nice" restaurant was going in there. My company had their christmas party there two years ago before the restaurant went in so I put it on my radar. We went there to watch the Kentucky Derby later that year and had some food. Honestly it was so-so. So fast-forward 1 year later and we found ourselves in there again because all the other spots on the strip were packed. We were actually blown away by the two apps we got (the cream of crab soup, and the scallops) They were the best cream of crab and scallops I think I've ever had, and I grew up in Baltimore. We had ordered wine and H, the bartender, recommended a better and cheaper bottle. So a week or so later we decided to try Towson Tavern again and H recommended we get the Pork Chop. Again, this was one of if not the best pork chops I ever had. Finally I had to ask H what had happened to this place. I was here a couple months ago and it was whatever. He told me that they had replaced the chefs a couple of months ago. So I went there again this last week, as usual H grabbed us a great bottle of wine that was on special. We got the soup and the short rib, and again, one of the best short ribs I've ever had. Towson Tavern is seriously one of the best restaurants in the city right now. Sure it's loud, and it's in college town, but for straight food enjoyment it's as good or better than woodberry, waterfront, clementines, food market, and all the trendy spots, and I've been to all of them quite a few times.

I was really looking forward to trying out Towson Tavern because a) I had seen it while walking through Towson and it looked inviting and promising and b) it was just featured in the latest edition of "Best of Baltimore" in the Baltimore magazine. Unfortunately the experience did no where near meet expectations. To begin with the decor; Dark wood adorns the restaurant and bar and gives it a dark but sophisticated vibe that I really liked. The bar is huge and being a former bartender I really appreciated the layout. There was a section in the back with huge and comfy sofas that ads an excellent sense of style to the already stylish and well planned layout of the whole place. Based on the decor alone this place would get a four stars. We sat at the tables near the bar but by the windows which was lovely considering it was a beautiful evening in Towson. The main dining room was packed for Restaurant Week but over by us and in the bar it was sparse. The bartender who greeted us and served us throughout the evening was polite, attentive, offered suggestions and overall provided excellent service. I wish I could say the meal was equal in terms of the decor and the service but it was not. It was, in a word, unexceptional. We started with three appetizers, the pork lollipops, gazpacho soup with shrimp, and the heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella. The mozz and tomatoes where very good and the pesto dressing was not overwhelming and by far this were the better of the three apps. I appreciated the fact the mozz is made fresh in-house. The gazpacho was good but the shrimp has a burnt taste that I didn't care for and that was something that was unfortunately repeated throughout the meal. The soup itself was good but not great. The pork lollies were a disappointment. Very dry, fatty and the ginger that came with did not add to the flavor. For the main courses we had the tenderloin with fingerlings and asparagus and the short rip with garlic mash and asparagus. The tenderloin was cooked to temp but was extremely dry and lack a ton of flavor other then that burntness mentioned earlier. The potatoes were potatoes. Nothing crazy. The short rib looked big at first inspection but when it came off the bone, I would say 70 percent was fat leaving just a small amount of meat. I'm not sure if that is typical or not, I know short ribs are fatty but this seemed overboard. The rib itself was fine, tastier then the tenderloin, but not amazing and again had the burnt quality. The mash potatoes were thick and dry. The asparagus on both our plates were flavorless except, once again for the burnt flavor. I'm not sure if this was done on purpose or not by the chef and I'm only assuming it was because it was so often repeated throughout the meal. However it didn't add to the food and if anything it took away from the possibilities of other flavors emerging. We didn't stay for dessert because at the end of the meal we were stuffed, which means the portions were substantial. I wish this review was better because with the decor and location it has amazing potential and was hoping to be blown away because, as others have said, Towson needs something like this. I'm sorry to say, other then a drink at the bar, I won't be back.

Arrived with party of 4 at 5:30 on a Saturday night without reservations. The place was empty except for one couple at the bar. I asked for a booth rather than a table and the waitress said that all of the booths were reserved. However by the time we left at 7PM, there were still plenty of empty booths. The valet parking was a great. The food was mixed. The pork chop special was over-cooked, tough, and dry. The mashed potatoes were good. The broccoli with cheeze sauce tasted like it was made with either cheese-whiz or velveeta but I guess it conformed to the theme of comfort food. My wife had the ahi tuna which was OK. Overall, I would return because it is better than bar food but not quite fine-dining. The prices were a little higher than they should be.

Nice atmosphere, great service, excellent cocktails, well-prepared food. Not sure why the place wasn't full on a Friday night but we had a great experience. Really hope this place makes it because Towson needs it.

Just one more place trying to be something it's not. This is the heart of Towson. There is no room for semi-fine dining. That's what they are trying to do here. The place is beautiful but the menu is really lackluster. Instead of the familiar appetizer/entree we all understand this menu must have been thought up by the snotty sorority girl whose daddy has too much money. Written as small medium and large you really have no idea what your getting until it arrives. That's where the excitement ends. The food was bland and uninspired. I don't even remember what I had. They do have a nice bar but wait for later in the night and all the "better then drink specials" college kids come strolling in and ruin the nice atmosphere. Dont get me wrong, I like to get loud but place is not designed for parting. This is just another Vin waiting to be turned into a bar like it should have been from the start. You could throw a napkin in this block and hit a drunk college kid. I know. I used to be one. Stupid developers.

Although it can be pricey, some of the food that comes out of this kitchen is amazing. Service is usually good when I go (it's always great at the bar). Drinks are good (I'd recommend happy hour since they are pricey and aren't huge). The menu has some consistently excellent choices. The caprese is wonderful-amazing pesto and balsamic sauces on fresh mozzarella with beautiful heirloom tomatoes. I don't eat meat, but my friend and boyfriend consistently rave about the burger and the short rib. Apparently the burger has multiple cuts of meat and some bacon..sounds like a custom experience. The short rib is reportedly unbelievably tender. For me- I can't leave without the cream of crab. Seriously people. It is the best money you will ever spend on cream of crab, ever, anywhere. I can't tell you how rich it is, or how packed with crab.. Literally, expect every bite to be packed with crab; there are also usually several jumbo lumps in each bowl. Get it.. I've tried a couple of their different iterations of various fish and scallops. All well cooked with generally nice and interesting accompaniments. Don't think they always have oysters but when they do, those are good too. Give it try- the ambiance is very inviting, comfortable, classy.

Good but not great and that's a shame. We went here on a Saturday night and was surprised that it was not crowded at all. We sat at the bar for drinks and appetizers but decided to have dinner instead. The bartenders were great, drinks were great and atmosphere was better than I expected. The selection of beers was interesting and had plenty that I had never seen before, which is unusual. We started with a couple appetizers of crab gratin and fried dumplings. The crab, while not cheap was loaded with large lumps of crab and had a great mustardy flavor and perfect golden toast points. The dumplings were sort of plain looking and lacking a good presentation but were interesting and flavorful so we did enjoy them. Then came entrees. My wife had the scallops and they were very nice. Perfectly cooked, well seasoned and served with crisp greens and a flavorful dressing. Now for the down side. I had the pork tenderloin and leeks. It was way overcooked, the leeks tasted slightly burnt and although the portion was huge, it was cut too thick and just over all was a failure. It seemed the kitchen staff was just afraid to serve it undercooked so they overcompensated. It was quite a shame but I couldn't get past it. I would go back for appetizers and the pleasant bar experience, but would surely skip the dinner.

This a friendly "middle of the road" restaurant with a nice decor, friendly waitresses and complimentary valet parking. The ambience is surprisingly quiet, given that the place was pretty full on a recent Saturday night. The clientele is primarily middle aged and up--although I did spot one family with children. Bread is served beforehand. Each entree comes with one very large side dish or salad. However, you do not get to choose your side. It would have been nicer to have been given a choice, or to have been served two smaller sized sides to add to the variety of the meal. Just as a parenthetical comment, my meal came with "wood grilled leeks."-- a dish which I had never eaten before. Let's just say that leeks are probably an acquired taste.

Great new addition to Towson dining. Not to pretentious but with great food and super friendly and attentive service (Nick will take great careof you). It wasnt that busy when we came in on saturday night, but we were treated to a really good evening, had the chicken and the filet, both great, and the tiramisu for dessert was awesome. Apparently there menu changes often too so we look forward to coming back soon.

The Towson Tavern is a much needed breath of fresh air and a great addition to the Towson area. My wife and I stopped by for a late dinner and some drinks on a Thursday evening. We were impressed with the ambiance (very upscale, gastro pub type of environment) and were greeted immediately upon walking in the door. We chose to sit at the bar, which spans the length of the restaurant and is a beautiful, dark marble. The bartender was pleasant and greeted us promptly. We were served drinks within moments of taking our seats. A few minutes later, we met the General Manager, Michael Velleggia, who recently came to the Towson Tavern after spending several years as a manager at the Capital Grille. Mr. Velleggia spent several minutes chatting with us, and shared that the Tavern is in the process of expanding its menu and building an enhanced kitchen. At this time they are only open for dinner, but apparently there are plans to launch lunch offerings later this year. We asked Mr. Velleggia for recommendations in terms of the food, and he suggested the black truffle salted popcorn (which my wife believes she is now addicted to!) and the pork dumplings. We also tried a truffle panini, which was served with a sweet and tangy heirloom tomato dipping sauce- unique and very tasty. For our entrees I chose the short ribs, which were very flavorful and tender, and my wife had the striped seabass served over a corn chutney, which she enjoyed very much. The price points were decent, especially if you are looking a combination of food, ambiance, and service. This would also be a great place for happy hour, or a place to plan a client dinner after work. I'm looking forward to the menu additions, and I commend the GM and owners on bringing a fresh alternative to the Towson area. We will certainly be visiting the Towson Tavern again and in fact are planning a dinner with friends there next month. I am giving it 4 stars for now but I expect it will earn 5 stars once they expand the menu.
