This was one of myfavorite spots to go to when I worked at the AMC - Towson theatre. I would always get the Chicken Pita with French Fries. The food was always served fresh, the fries were nice and crisp, and the chicken pita was always flavorful and dripping down my arm with pure goodness everytime i took a bite. The people who worked there was always friendly and joked around with us when we came in there. Unfortunately, AMC - Towson shut down, and I havent been there since because i dont live in the area. But I am determine to get there one day to have that Chicken Pita agin.

I'd give them 3.5 stars if possible. Sandwiches are really great. Bread is amazing (I think they steam instead of toast), fresh and delicious, cheesesteak was good ("chop the life out of their meat" style for those asking). Cheese fries had actual cheese sauce and shredded cheese melted all over it. Pretty decent. The "meh" part - were out of ham for another sandwich, not a whole lot of cheese selection for those into cheddar choices. Cook was a bit gruff, but you know, I get it. Not the end of the world. Took a minute for it to be prepped and ready, but thats what happens when you make food from (somewhat) scratch. Overall decent experience. Might try pizza fries in the future.

So the first time I came here, I remembered it being SOOO FREAKING GOOD!!! however, that could have been due to the fact I was totally under the influence of alcohol... The second time I came here, I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. The steak and bacon was overcooked (meaning it was a bit dry) and they didnt add enough american cheese. So the initial impression on my first visit was definitely influenced by my consumption of alcohol... After saying all of the above... this is still probably the best cheesesteak in maryland, however, I also have not been actively searching for it either... so I may revisit this place again once I have a better idea of the cheesesteak scene in the Maryland area. If the competition is not as hot then I may add a star... otherwise this review will remain the same.

After reading reviews I decided to try this place...well, I've definitely had better. The bread was ok, freshly pulled out of the bag, I thought maybe it would have been toasted, but not so....My husband and daughter also tried a cheese steak and no one gave raving reviews.....just didn't really taste like anything. Maybe I'll do what other reviewers did....have a few drinks then head back over. Overall, if you are walking past and are super hungry, go on in...but if you are on a mission for a delicious treat, there are other places you should try first!

Found this place on Yelp. Wasn't really looking for a sub but when I saw the pictures and red the reviews I had to try it out. I ordered the Real Thing Cheese steak and onion rings. When u arrived I was greeted by the owner who was super nice and amusing. He made me feel very welcomed in his establishment. You would be surprised that you can walk in to patriotize someone's eatery and they are aloof to you. He warned me not to eat the who thing because it would put me to sleep. Lol. Not before I do this review. The sub was huge. Definitely worth it's $10 value. All the vegetables were fresh and crunchy. The spunion sauce just enhanced the flavors of the meat and veggies. The onion rings were good too. Fresh made with real onions. Even after they went cold they we still crunchy. I'm as super pleased with this food. My treat for the week indeed.

Yes yes yes!! Go there! My boyfriend and I just left. I got the real sub and he got the hoggie with a side of fries. The meat is seasoned perfectly. After eating this sub I wanna say please disregard the reviews based on price! You get what you pay for! If you want a cheap sub with frozen meat than go to subway but the meat you'll get here is fresh and they are not stingy with it! The service was wonderful! Tony and his crew are awesome. Be aware of the area. Weekends tend to get busy during the later hours so be prepared for that! We will be back!!!!!! Best sub in town

U know how u go to Philly or to chaps pitbeef and find lines of people. Well this isn't it. I went in on a weekend and there was nobody Wasn't too sure to order their famous cheesesteak. It took about ten minutes. The bread was fresh and crispy the meat was nice and chewy definitely a good cheesesteak Just not a destination place for the money. Good for drunk college kids. Go Towson

I have to say, as a pregnant woman, this cured a major craving. After being in Towson for an appointment, I yelped the area to find the best cheesesteak, and this place had the highest ratings. The gentlemen working were surprised to learn I would be devouring this cheesesteak alone, but I had no problem proudly owning up to it. In fact, they added extra meat once they realized I was pregnant. It was delicious, the American cheese was perfectly melted, the meat was chopped well, the tomatoes were fresh and juicy, and the hoagie roll . . . oh the roll. It was simply amazing - fresh, just perfectly sweet - just wonderful. I was pleased, and would certainly return to answer a craving in the future.

Nice little spot in Towson. Staff is friendly and funny. Food is good but not great. I came to try the cheesesteak because I heard great things but was not super impressed. When people compare this to Pats and Genos in Philly I have to wonder what they were thinking. Would still recommend the place just not the best cheesesteak I have ever had by a long shot.

A little more expensive than the average carry out, but also a little more tasty. Something about the hot sauce mmmm. Solid cheesesteak joint!

I got a provolone cheesesteak and it was amazing. Nice meat, great flavor, and a good bun. I've had cheesesteaks from Jim's Steaks in Philly and they're not as good as The Real Thing. A small place but nice and clean and the owner and employees are super friendly and polite. Their homemade hot sauce was really good too. Definitely will return.

Delicious... I ate here twice in 8 days time to get the Real One. I work in Towson at least once a week, and I've never noticed the Real Thing ever until my boyfriend who lives in Montgomery County told me that his friend recommended it to him. We walked in on a Sunday morning, and it looked unimpressive. My boyfriend and I shared the Real One, a cheesesteak with the works. It was incredible. Tony, the owner, is extremely outgoing and friendly. I'm definitely coming back soon and bringing others. Also the cheese fries are really good. I think he uses melted cheese on top as well as cheese sauce. I highly recommend it. My boyfriend says it's the best in Maryland.

I ordered 'The Real Thing'. Given some of the reviews, I expected better. It was tasty (it was a cheesesteak after all) but honestly not any better than the average cheesesteak you find around DC... Given how thinly shaved/chopped the meat is, they should cut the veggies smaller, in my opinion, for a more consistent texture. That said, the owner was a super friendly and charismatic guy, and the hole-in-the-wall shop has a lot of character. Worth it if you are in the area and craving a cheesesteak.

Very clean, great customer service. I went in with my boyfriend , i didn't get anything. He got a shrimp cheese steak and it was $10 for a 9in, when it came out our eyes grew it was huge! You can a lot for the money, it's so big that's it's wrapped in foil and placed in a container. The guy was so nice that he gave me a free drink, I took a star off because they charge $1 for using your debit card.

This place is a good late night after hours spot if your in the Towson area. But the steaks were only ok nothing to brag about.

  • Antonio G.

This place sucks! Ordered delivery from them last night. The gyro in pita sandwich was disgusting. The meat was the frozen kind that comes out of a box then they throw it on the grill to heat it up. The meat smelled so nasty. We also ordered a cheesteak that was one of the worst ever. The bread was soggy and it was falling apart. Was totally disappointed. You could tell they take no pride in there food. Total garbage.

  • Tunaidi A.

The Real Thing really serves the best cheese steaks in town. The cheese steaks come in 6 and 9 inches, and I love how orders are fresh off the grill. The hours are awesome. If you're ever craving greasy food or in need of a bite after going out, The Real Thing will be available. I'm a fan of the The Real One (basically a Philly cheese steak on roids) and their pizza fries. Gyros are also available, but I haven't tried them yet. Tip: Bring cash. They charge a $1 fee if you use card.

  • Lorena D.

When it comes to cheesesteaks in general, I always find the meat to be a little on the dry side. However, The Real Thing was pretty juicy, especially since 90% of the sandwich was the meat. On the other hand, the bread was soggy in just a few minutes. It was way too thin to take on all the oil and juices from the meat. But all in all, it was a good sandwich, just change the bread!

I read reviews, searched and searched for the best in the area. Finally decided I would drive to towson. On getting there it was empty. I was happy becos i didnt have to wait at all. I tried it and it really was just ok. I didn't taste or feel the hype. I'm only being honest. Would I recommend them to someone else. Sure! Will I go back....I highly doubt it.!

Best cheesesteak I have ever had, worth every single penny. The employees are super friendly and eager to suggest different delicious topping combinations. I will absolutely be back down to eat here again don't waste your money anywhere else. The onion rings were also very crispy and perfectly cooked.

Order the real deal. Ask for the owner's homemade hot sauce. He takes real pride in his work. Amazing "guy" food. Girls ask for the chicken cheesesteak. Really great college town food near the marriott on York street

Hmmmm.......burnt oil smell coming in the door that kind of burned my eyes :-/ On this particular Tuesday, i ordered a chicken cheesesteak and cheese fries. My boyfriend got a cheese steak. Everything was made to order. Slightly expensive though in my opinion. Not a very inviting interior/decor. All other reviews say worth it. I will check by back in soon. Hopefully the food will be the star booster

My boyfriend and I are so glad we found The Real Thing on Yelp! We wanted to have a quick but yummy dinner, and our Yelp app directed us to one of the most delicious cheesesteaks we've ever had (and um, we've had quite a bit- just ask our waistlines...). We came on a quiet weeknight and were the only patrons. Don't let that fool you though; the owner said that he sells an average of 500 subs on a Friday night! Super friendly guy who knows how to please his customers' taste buds. The basic cheesesteak had wonderful flavor and texture, and you could really tell he put his best into the sub. His house-made hot sauce was awesome; we'll definitely get more of it next time we go. Yum....

The real what, exactly? Not cheesesteak, for sure. I can't remember when I've been so disappointed. I was starving after a 2 PM work session at the courthouse, and a quick Yelp scan turned up this dive. I can only conclude that the people who give this place 5 stars are a) drunk, b) uninformed or c) both. I arrived about 3:30 PM, and the place was totally empty. A nice, older woman shuffled in from the back and took my order: a 9-inch cheesesteak with fried onions. I waited while she cooked it, which took about 15 minutes (seemed a long time, but I guess with no other customers she had to start from scratch.) She wrapped up, smiled goodbye and I hightailed it to my car to eat where it was cool and didn't smell like grease. There were two good things about the sandwich. One, the meat had a nice, peppery flavor, and two, the cheese had melted perfectly. Now let's talk about the rest. The texture of the meat was awful, full of gristle and fat, and it was very salty. The bread was just a regular hoagie roll, not a high-quality chewy baguette, and the meat juices had soaked it through completely so it was a soggy mess. The onions were few and far between and didn't carry much flavor. After about 3 bites I picked out whatever tender meat I could find and threw the rest away. I actually felt a little sick. This place really deserves one star, but the woman who served me was really friendly and courteous considering I was the only reason she couldn't be watching TV in the back room. Good God. Stay away.

I've been here a few times before. Had sandwiches made by Tony. I recently went back and it's different people making sandwiches and they don't taste ANYTHING like the ones I had before. The other reviews are more than likely reviews for when Tony made sandwiches. They tasted just like Philly cheesesteaks now, not so much. This made me sad because I loved that I could get an authentic Philly cheesesteak in Towson. Looks like I'll be making a road trip soon.

Alright... I didn't know what to expect but I thought I would check it out the other day. The weather was finally better so my family and I took a walk with the kids and dog. We stopped by the place and were going to leave the dog outside and the owner came out and helped us get the stroller in and invited our dog. He asked if he could give samples to Bill (our Jack Russel) and gave our kids free bags of chips... how does this guy make any money? Well... once you try the sandwiches you'll know how. They were delicious! Its greasy, guilty and fun. We'll be back. Try the homemade hot sauce - its buffalo sauce on crack.

I love the food here. I am more a fan of the cheeseburger sub than the cheesesteak, but that is personal preference. Love the divey down home feel and the owner literally makes this place awesome. If you are looking for some late night food on the weekend or some good food for lunch during the week, this is my recommended Towson spot.

Great cheesesteak. Huge portion. Great customer service! The owner is super friendly and funny. The cheese fries were my favorite. Liquid cheese and melted slice.

I won't say its the best cheesesteak I've ever had, or even the best in Baltimore, but its a solid cheesesteak. There was no grease, it was freshly made and prepared quickly, the fries were decent and nicely crispy. The guy running the place was very nice but really seemed like he was trying too hard to make a sale. And yes, credit card charges are a buck each time, but since I was a first time customer he only charged 25 cents so my bill wasn't oddly priced. A 9 inch sub with a 20oz soda and fries is $13 and seems kind of steep but if you have the extra cash not too bad. I think everyone is too harsh on the ambiance, yeah its a hole in the wall sub shop, not very big at all, but not near the bad condition i was thinking it would be. It was actually quite tidy considering. I'd eat here again but wouldn't be my first choice either. Overall it was an OK experience with no real complaints.

I've had cheesesteaks in Philly and The Real Thing is definitely a favorite and possibly even better!! The flavors are right on and the food comes out HOT. Don't let the lack-luster decor fool you, it's not as seedy as it seems. Tony is an awesome guy, always joking and making sure you get the right thing.. I always make sure to stop by when I'm in the Towson area!

  • Shay D.

I had the cheese steak sub and it was really good packed with meat. They ran out of tomatoes so I was a bit up set about that but once I started eating the sub didn't even notice. Didn't like that fact that my onion rings were burned and instead of having full onion rings I had more crumbs. So all in all I would eat a sub there again just not any sides.

  • Sonya A.

Very very good... Greasy & cheesy- but not too much. I am a firm believer of a toasted bun, but there is no need with this place. Eating in is comfy, salt/ pepper/ ketchup/ napkins delivered without asking. Meat is flavorful and toppings are not skimpy and right on. Would not compare to a Philly cheesesteak- most GOOD PCS don't need any toppings at all- just meat and cheese...may try to order this way next time I go to really taste the real thing.

Found this place via Yelp about a year ago! My husband & I are deeply in love with Tony's cheesesteaks. My husband always orders "The Real One" & I'll get one provolone cheese, mayo, ketchup, & sweet peppers. It's amazing each & every time we go & we visit a lot! Like most that have posted a review before me... this place most definitely has the best cheesesteaks in Baltimore. Maybe the best anywhere per my experience! We always park out back. There's a parking lot out back & you can walk in using the back door to the place. And Tony, the owner, is such a great guy. Very friendly! Now, go visit & have yourself a great cheesesteak!!!

When you make a claim like "Baltimore's Best Cheese Steak" you get my attention. I love cheese steaks, I'm somewhat of a connoisseur of the B-more cheese steak. So let me just say right now.. You sir have some work to do. I had to wait till you opened for lunch after taking care of some business with my son in the area, we were your the first customers. The greeting upon entering the place was..non existent. Ok you just woke up and/or are still mulling your long day ahead I get it. After ordering we sat and waited for our cheese steaks, we played pinball while waiting, service was what you would expect at start up. The cheese steak appeared awesome, tasty meat and cheese billowing from the top, cheese melted nicely on a toasted roll. But upon closer inspection the steak/cheese was kinda placed on top of the cut roll as opposed to in it. So not quite as much as it seemed (very deceiving) and the meat was bland, the cheese wasn't amazing.. and the roll wasn't dense and lacked flavor, not the quality I expected .. just not memorable. While not terrible when you bill yourself as " The Real thing" And "Baltimore's Best Cheese Steak" I'm expecting more then hype. Disappointed.

was excellent...only take cash but the cheesteaks are the best by far you will find in the area. place is a bit dirty but i dont mind it. very small location.

They serve up some really good cheese steaks here. They are nice and juicy and the rolls are very fresh. Steaks can be cooked with chopped onions which I like. However, I was a bit disappointed w/their twist on hots which was a splash of hot sauce

The Real Thing takes the cake in the greater Baltimore area - best cheesesteaks, hands down. I literally dream of the gooey, chewy, slightly spicey deliciousness and you will too once you've tried it. First off, you're going there for the food but expect some entertainment with it. Each time I'm there, I am in awe of the one man show that is the owner. He single handedly makes all the sandwiches, grabs drinks and rings people up. Plus, he recognizes everyone that walks in the door. (He'll know if you've never been there before and ask how you heard about his place and help you choose your perfect order.) It's incredible. My suggestion - the chicken cheesesteak, provolone cheese, with mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, hots and his homemade hot sauce. It's quite generous and I can get two meals out of the smaller size, so even the owner will tell you pass on the fries if you don't have a Kobayashi sized appetite. As mentioned above, he pretty much runs the place all by himself. So during peak times, be prepared to wait. But you won't be bored and the food will be worth it. Go here now!

  • Robert H.

The BEST sub place in Towson! Huge subs packed to the brim with meat, cheese, veggies, the works! I get The Real One and it's amazing. The owner is really friendly and gives you extra meat if you ask for it. He's been here for over two decades and he knows what he's doing. I don't know why anyone would go to the Subway on York when this place is literally 20 yards away.

Should be called "The never again" worst food ever! They also charge you a dollar to use a credit card! Never again!

    (1)
  • S R.

At first "Tony," the middle eastern owner was there alone. He couldn't work the credit machine and there was a line building. He made 2 ppl leave & get cash. Luckily it worked by the time he tried me. Cause if I had to leave trust me I wouldn't be returning. It's not worth the trouble. I got a chicken cheese steak w/only provolone cheese, lettuce & tomato on whole wheat wrap. It was a full size wrap, but It was $8. Be mindful, he added salt & I don't use salt nor did I request it. It was already 2 late after I saw him do it. I noticed each additional topping is $1 each. Fries are $3.50 and bottle drinks are $2. So I think he's a little expensive. Mind you I do care cause it's the middle of the day and I'm sober and not a Towson U student! Lol I'm sure staying open right next door to the bars til 3am is what's boosting this rating. It's why I tried it. It was alright, but it's high rating least for what I got, I don't think so. I wouldn't feel a need to return and my lips are already puckering from the salt. Yikes!

A friend of mine had cheese fries from this place one night after we went out and they were really good. Awhile later I was walking past this place because I work in Towson and often look for new lunch spots, so I stopped in for a look. I already ordered lunch from another place but wanted cheese fries as well, but since I didn't have cash and there was a $7 minimum order with credit plus an extra $1 charge for credit I told the rather rude owner of the place I would simply return when I needed more food or had cash. I also told them I worked in the area and was very prone to eating lunch out. He suggested I take a menu to order delivery for my business. Today I tried to order for my coworkers and I so I was giving the guy several orders over the phone and each one he had something rude to say about like, "Why would someone order that on that?!? NO, we don't have that." And each time I said OK, well this then. The last order I was placing I tried to upgrade a special to cheese fries and the guy like lost his mind, I suggested that I would alter my order and he told me and I quote, " NO, we don't upgrade the special." I said Ok, I will change it then if it can't be done or is difficult. He says, "If it is so difficult, cancel the order then! Nevermind, I cancel it for you. I don't want your order." THEN, he hangs up on me. *click* The draw of the cheese fries is strong but I feel like I am in an episode of "Seinfeld" with the frickin' soup Nazi. Crazy, but I am also saddened...my inner fat kid wants those cheese fries and a cheesesteak and my pride is fighting with the inner fat kid because I don't want to support a business run by a rude dude.

No better chicken cheese steak in the Baltimore area! I'm a Philly native and this steak is comparable to some of the best at home. Plus the owner is a cool dude with jokes. Now if the french fries were on par with the steaks. They are not bad. Just not special. This would be a five star review if they had 5 Guys fries...

I've been coming here for years and I have to say this is the best cheese steak sub in the MD VA DE PA area. The owner is great at personalizing your order and providing great atmosphere with his personality. I will continue to come here for years and continue to enjoy their delicious food.

By far the best cheesesteak I've found in Baltimore. Well and quickly made and a true reflection of the taste of Philly

A true hole-in-the-wall sub shop. Fantastic steak subs; I've put these guys to the test... And the pepper cheese steak is to die for. The right amount of grease, cheese, steak and toppings. When you want a cheese steak (you know that hankering ;)) this is the place to go. Cheese fries are a great add on but are way too much for one person... Share them with your buddy. Oh yeah, no need for lettuce on the cheese steak, it's great with everything else though. 5 stars for everything I've tried. I could eat lunch here just about every day :-D

The Real Thing is definitely a good place to migrate to if you want a gooey Cheesesteak sub. For my first time coming to The Real Thing, I'll say that I was pretty impressed by the quality of the cheesesteak (9" for $7.50). Did The Real Thing deliver the best cheese steak that I've ever had in Maryland? Not necessarily. However, The Real Thing is a definitely a good alternate option, especially considering the short commute that I have to get there. The owner, Tony, is a pretty chill and funny person to be around. He whipped up a tasty cheesesteak (yeah, he was cooking) while at the same thing keeping up the jokes and laughter. He reminds me of that friendly neighbor in your neighbor that would invite you to dinner, weekly. There's a $1 charge if you use credit, so be prepared (as other Yelpers have already stated). I'll definitely be back, especially with the weather getting warmer. I'm pretty sure I'll be in for more laughs and more delightful food.

Stopped in here on a whim after reading the yelp review while standing outside of The Recher (too early to enter the concert). We ordered up a couple of cheese steaks with his homemade hot sauce, and all I have to say is... why are you still reading this review? Go get one now. If I lived closer I'd be eating at this place at least a few times a week. The Owner was hilarious, courteous and didn't let us down. Amazing!

Is it an authentic Philly Cheesesteak? No. Is it great? Absolutely. Hand sliced meat. Generous portions. Fresh toppings. Friendly owner who takes pride in what he makes. What more can you ask for.

The real thing no longer. I went there a few weeks ago and left infuriated. 3 friends and I were in there late night and ordered chicken cheese steaks. We waited patiently for about half hour and still no cheese steaks. It was busy at first, but at that point the place was empty. We watched for 10 more minutes as the nights stragglers walked in high fived their buddy working behind the counter and left with their cheese steak. When we asked for the last time where our cheese steaks were, the girl told us she was making all the regular cheese steak orders first and then the chicken. You have to be kidding... you can't put two different kinds of meat on the grille at once? I think she gave our cheese steaks away to people she was friends with. It was 40 minutes at that point. She didn't believe me until I pointed to the ticket with the time on it! I asked for my money back. She said, "no, no" we just have to wait a second for the microwaves. What does a microwave have to do with making the cheese steak? Then I demanded that we get refunded and went to subway. I didn't want a microwaved cheese steak. I could not believe the experience. It is a shame b/c the owner is a cool guy and I have been in there during the day. A completely different experience. Someone needs to watch those late night clowns working.

I wish i could give this place 0 stars!!!! My wife and I was looking for a place to get a good cheese steak and we ran across this place. It had good reviews so we decided to give it a shot. I ordered our food and the total came to $26.50 ($1.00 debit card fee included) for just 2 regular cheese steaks and 2 orders of fries. IMO that is way too high for what we ordered. When we got home with our food, we were further disappointed by the lack of seasoning on our sandwiches and the taste of "re-fried" fries. Overall, not a good experience. Definitely not worth the premium price they charge.

I look forward to eating at the Real Thing every week. I don't live in Towson but I wish I did just so I could eat here more often. The cheese steaks are fantastic and you have to get the homemade hot sauce. It's not a overly hot sauce, the flavor of it is just amazing! The sandwiches also have plenty of meat in them which leave you full and satisfied when you are finished. Honestly when I am done with one of these cheese steaks I wish I could eat another but am already full! To respond to Sean's comment on all the bad things... Tony the owner completely replaced the flooring by himself. He finished the project in a timely manner and it looks very nice and professional. Also, the chicken is good but Tony is a cheese steak god, why did you order chicken when everyone is praising the steak? My advice, ignore his review.

Well, since Captain Harvey's in Dundalk has changed ownership and gone downhill I needed to find the new best cheese steak in Baltimore. Folks have been mentioning this place and, although I've passed by several times I always miss it. After all, it is but a small lackluster shop in a sea of flashy Towson shops along York Rd. I walked in and the place was empty. Excellent. Saw a sign stating that they are open late 'till 2:30 on Thurs-Sat. This is not the time I wanna find myself in this place. I can just imagine Towson's finest packing this place at that hour. Anyway, after a quick chat with the owner I told him I'm here to try Baltimore's best cheese steak and he got to work creating it for me. BAM! This is a winner. Fresh steak, not frozen, provolone, hossauce and sauteed On-Yons! At $8 for a 9" sub this was exactly what I wanted. Faygo Alert! They sell Faygo products up in here! So, like any Michigan ex-pat I snatched up the Rock & Rye. You might call it strawberry soda. We call it red pop. The decor in this place is a cross between a no frills sub shop and 80's porn office (peach wall paper and 80's looking modern art). Add a poster pf Scarface and a juke box and it's on! The only down side is that when I left my coat smelled of 27 yr old steak grease. You definitely eat it and wear it at this place. But I'll be back. Best sub in Baltimore. Holler at it, hon!

I ordered the Provolone Cheesesteak and was very impressed. I use to order from this place when it was a street over and behind Burger King on Joppa Rd. That was back in 1998...so management could have changed since. Anyways, the positive reviews about this place are spot on. The cheesesteak here has been one of the better ones I have eaten here in Baltimore. Would definitely come back. It is a small place as advertised with a couple tables to eat at if you wish. They do charge a $1.00 for using a Credit or Debt card for purchasing so that was a little disappointing. So if you have cash on you, you should be okay. This place is definitely worth a try for the cheesesteak alone.

Very good cheese steak. Don't let the outside or decor give you any hesitation. Owner interaction with customers is great - very entertaining. Afraid to come here too much, but as the owner says "you'll die anyway!"

This place is awesome! I had been craving a cheesecake for days and decided to try this place. That was a wonderful decision. It's easy to find, lady that was working that day was nice and friendly. The cheesesteak is good..quality made, fresh ingredients, and a good size for the price. No it doesn't look like a 5 star restaurant in the inside but the food speak volumes! Will I return YES! Only reason I regret finding this place is because of a possible increased waistline.

  • Kevin S.

It lives up to its name! Great food, fresh ingredients, and friendly smiles; That Is how I would describe this place. Being a "foodie" I have eaten at Pats, Geno's, and Tony Luke's and this place is definitely superior. The serving sizes are generous and bigger than any of the Philly eateries I have been to. I enjoyed the owner/cook, he brings a level of energy and excitement that you will never experience at any other cheesesteak place. I will definitely return because of the friendly service and the great cheesesteak Also important to note is the homemade "hot" sauce, it is delicious. It is more on the mild side of flavor tasting more like a buffalo sauce rather than a hot sauce!

  • Scott K.

I thought I had experienced good cheese steaks in my lifetime, until I stumbled onto this place. Then I realized everything else up until now was a lie. I don't know about cheese steaks out of Philadelphia, but if they are better, then there are probably Angels nearby. It's that heavenly! Ask for the home made hot sauce.

  • Derrick P.

Bottom line...best cheese steaks you'll find in the MD area. Purely a hole in the wall location - this is a great place to come with a few friends for a casual and incredibly tasty bite. The owner/cook is quite the character - always happy and joking around. He will quickly remember you once you start going on a regular basis. Highly recommended.

  • Michael P.

Good Cheesesteaks for the MD area. Im not going to say it is anywhere as close to Philly status, but for the Maryland area it is one of the best I've tasted. I had a chicken cheesesteak with cheese whiz fries and both were delicious. Overall 5 out of 5 and a Mike P's BOMB dot COM status!

The Real Thing is owner-operated and Tony knows his stuff. Every morning he slices the meat in-house and the fresh cut meat makes all the difference in the world. Having been making Baltimore's best cheesesteaks for decades, Tony knows how to put all the ingesdients together "just right." The atmosphere is friendly, there are plenty of cold beverages in the fridge, and the service always comes with a smile, I recommend the Real Thing to anyone who is serious about Philly cheesesteaks.

    (5)
  • Scott L.

First off, they advertise the best cheesesteak in Baltimore, and that it certainly is not. They don't offer cheese whiz and the "Baltimore" roll is nowhere near as good as a Philly roll. If you want the best cheesesteak in baltimore, it can be found at MaGerks in Fed Hill. Aside from the fact that the place is a dirty, dark, hole in the wall with terrible parking (all things I can typically overlook for good food), the owner is a jerk. They charge a dollar extra for credit card and not only is this not allowed by the credit card companies, but it's a ridiculous rip off. When I told the owner that I didn't want to pay extra, he told me that if I can't afford it, I should go somewhere else. That's exactly what I'm going to do in the future, and exactly what I'd recommend you do.

Offers standard Baltimore carry-out foods: sandwiches, fries, etc. However, the main attraction is the cheesesteak sub. The sub comes in a standard Bmore sub roll. It was chewy and heavy enough to soak up the juices from the meat but not too heavy. The meat was good. Nothing too fancy, which I think is a good thing. Good meat does not need anything but salt and pepper. The toppings were standard: lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, etc. They have different cheese options as well: all the standard choices except for cheese wiz. I chose American because I think it is the perfect flavor foil to the greasy meat. The sub was topped off with homemade hot sauce that was surprisingly good. This is the kind of sauce that would taste good over anything but went particularly well with the cheesesteak because it was slightly sweet and yet full of spice and vinegar which effectively cut the heaviness of the meat and cheese. Baltimore cheesesteak subs are not like Philadelphia's, but why is that a bad thing? The Real Deal offers one of the best steak subs that I've had in Baltimore.

  • Jake B.

Was in Towson and had a taste for a nice steak sub. Whipped out Iphone and Yelp led me to this spot. Awesome tasting steak sub. The place looks like a Tony Santana carry out but your taste buds will thank you.

Best Sub shop ever! Food is always yummy. Owner is friendly. Cash is preferred method of payment.

I'm a Philly area native and I lived in the city for 6 years. I'm not going to write a very long review about this place, but I'll give you my impressions... No cheese steak is complete without cheez whiz, so they have that going right for them. The rolls they use are close, but certainly not a traditional philly style roll. The steak itself was greasy, but not in the usual good way. It was more of a wow, they need to clean that griddle kind of greasy. Anyone who says these are as good as any cheese steak from any random place in Philly has obviously never had a real steak.

    (2)
  • Josh B.

This is the best cheese steak I've ever had. The owner really knows what he's doing and his homemade spicy sauce is amazing (it's not that spicy, but it's great). I go here every time I'm near TU.

    (5)
  • Erik B.

The owner is very generous and a nice guy. Cheesesteaks are big & hot sauce is good. Fries are good and not greasy.

My expectations were high based on all the 5 star reviews, and my review must reflect that level of scrutiny. I lived in NJ for the past 12 years, I know a good hoagie. Now I didn't have a cheesesteak, but I did have a chicken cheesesteak. It was well prepared, very good, and huge. Not greasy at all. Fresh bread. A respectable sandwich. The place was cold like there was no heat. The floor was all ripped up, leaving nothing by the ragged concrete base floor. I'm OK with a hole in the wall. The chicken cheesesteak was good, not great. This might be a 5 star hoagie in MD, but not nearly as good as I've has in NJ and South Philly. If 3 stars means A-OK and 4 stars means Yay I'm a fan, then this is 3.

  • Chelsea H.

This cheesesteak was the best I have had in a long time if not ever. I got the large cheesesteak hoagie with lettuce, tomato, mayo and extra cheese. The meat was so tender and juicy. It was made with care and the meat was fresh. It is hard to find places where the food is freshly made. The owner was very nice and friendly. The only thing I would do is get extra mayo. If I want a cheesesteak, this is what i would get anytime. My dad and boyfriend also enjoyed them a lot, more than the local sandwich places in the Towson area.

    (5)
  • Josh A.

Easily the best cheese steaks I've found in the Baltimore area. The ambiance isn't much, but the service and food more than makes up for it. The owner is quite the colorful character. He should have his own show.

  • Ned C.

The food is good and the owner is great. Customer service is very important to me and I thought that the owner was awesome. He got our orders right, brought it to the table and even gave us free drinks. My sub was huge and tasted great. I will definitely go back.

A friend told me about this little place in Towson! cheesesteak subs are one of my favorite foods. I've been to Philly several times and ate a couple local spots which one was Gino's. I really don't see what is so great about Philly cheesesteaks especially that fake cheese they use (cheese wiz). That is just gross, putting nothing but chemicals in your body and it doesn't even taste good. The cheesesteaks at The Real Thing are delicious, roll lightly toasted, tender steak and gooy REAL cheese. Couldn't ask for a better cheesesteak. It's worth a visit you won't be disappointed. The owner/cook is very nice. The place is a little hole in the wall but the food is awesome!

    (5)
  • Rob N.

Dive-y little place that's been around forever, with a pretty darn good cheesesteak. The Real Thing dishes up a sandwich that's just the right amount of beef, the right amount of grease, the right amount of cheese, and the right amount of slightly toasted/slightly soggy white-bread sub roll. I got mine with fried onions and hot peppers, and it was good to the last bite.

  • Matt C.

The Real Thing is an amazing cheesesteak place located on York Road, right next to The Greene Turtle. I have been going here for months now, and always get a cheesesteak. I usually always just get a cheesesteak with american cheese, hot peppers, hot sauce, and lettuce. If you are not a fan of hot sauce, you should try Tony's (the owner) anyway. He makes it himself and it is delicious. It is not that hot, and it has a great kick to it. I have only gotten a regular cheesesteak and a chicken cheesesteak, so I can't really say how the rest of the food is. And it will probably stay that way, because everytime I go there I'm just craving one of his cheesesteaks. Tony is a great guy that always keeps you entertained. As other reviewers said, make sure to bring cash. Tony takes cards but charges an extra buck. Call ahead at 1-410-583-7211 and place an order for pickup, it usually takes about 10-15 minutes depending on how much food you get. Once again, delicious cheesesteaks! Best I've ever had! If you haven't tried one yet and love cheesesteaks, trust me, you have to go ASAP, you won't be disappointed.

  • Jonathan D.

The place is a pit but the cheese steaks are great. Screw the Philly phans with their criticisms, Philly cheese steaks are over rated. I've had better in Boston and Baltimore. And who cares about cheese wiz? Cheese wiz isn't even real cheese! Tony makes a good consistent cheese steak that I'll stop in and get whenever in the area. And I think he's funny.

    (5)
  • Eric K.

I'll echo what the others have said. Without a doubt the beat cheesesteak in Maryland (or anywhere south of the mason/dixon), served by one of Maryland's funniest, most friendly guys. I've been going to the Real Thing since it was in its old location behind where it is now. If Jim's in Philly is a 10, the Real Thing is a 9, and you don't have to drive 2 hours and wait in line for another to get it. There is a $1 charge for using a credit card, so bring cash. Tony appreciates it.

Consistent food, great service, comfortable casual dining. My coworkers and friends all agree - we each have our favorite food item at The Real Thing, and when you are craving it, it's the only thing that'll do. Tony, the owner and cook, remembers his regulars and their preferences, and makes it feel like you're visiting a family member every time you stop in. I'm partial to the gyros, always flavorful and fresh. My reviewing partner is addicted to the cheese steaks, and agrees that they are the best in the area.

I've never been to Philly before, but this is by far the best cheesesteak I ever had. Get the Real One Cheesesteak. It's pretty much the regular cheesesteak with the works. The Real One Cheesesteak Chicken was also surprisingly good (might actually be better than the regular cheesesteak). The great part is that the meat is all fresh and the owner slices and prepares it himself. You won't find processed cheesesteak meat here. He even brought out a tub of freshly sliced rib eye meat to show me that it's not processed meat. Definitely worth checking out .

  • Jonathan L.

Best cheesesteak I have ever eaten. The outside and decor don't add up to much, but 100% of the essence is in the flavor... Always stick with the provolone for these types of issues... I can honestly say I have yet to have a bad cheesesteak from here

    (5)
  • Autumn Y.

Amaaaaaazing cheesesteak. My boyfriend and I just ate there for the first time, and it was unreal. The bread was crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside; just as we like it. The meat was tender, and the cheese was stringy. The owner is funny and super friendly too. Definitely worth going. We'll be coming back whenever we crave cheesesteaks, even though we're 1.5 hours away :)

  • Alireza S.

I just Yelped my way over to this place. I'm a fan. The owner is incredibly friendly, cheesesteaks were pretty good. I am going to get it with just wiz and onions next time... sweet peppers were not for me. Again, Tony is awesome. Keeps it real. Can't wait to go back and have another!

If you for one second think that this place is all hype you are wrong. The cheese stake is far and away the best I have ever had. I have no idea why anyone would go to the subway that is on the same block this place is at least 100 times better.

  • Gaz H.

A hole in the wall dive with great cheese steak. I had the 6 inch with Provolone cheese and everything on it. Wow. Everything inside the surprisingly soft bun was delicious. The guy who must be the owner was hilarious. The dining area is basic; washrooms serviceable. A formidable lunch.

The best Philly Cheesesteak ever. Tony has been making them perfectly since his birth, and will make them well into the afterlife. In the 13 years I've been going there, I have never been disappointed by the food, the service, by anything. He even gave me a free tequila shot on my birthday! Please go here, the place is a Baltimore institution.

Lives up to the name of Baltimore's Best Cheesesteaks. I always get the real one with cheese fries on the side. Hot sauce goes great on everything. I love that he's open late. He loves his customers and what he does. He always has a nice smile on his face as well as great employees.

What a great find in the Towson area! Being from Atlanta it is hard to find a real cheese steak sandwich and I didn't expect to find such a good one in Baltimore either. Boy was I wrong! The Real One cheese steak was great. The bread is what really put it over the top. I did order the pizza fries and was a little disappointed, but that may be just me as I have never had marinara on fries before. I will definitely be back if I am ever in town again. The owner Tony seems to be a nice guy and I love helping small business owners thrive. Although by the looks of the customers, he may not be so small these days. Great guy, great food. Highly recommended.

  • Amar S.

The Cheesesteak is one of the best I have ever had. The meat is fresh and the bun is real soft and crisp at the same time. I travel to Baltimore for a couple of weeks every few months and will become a regular. Try the secret hot sauce. It is real good. The owner is very nice and is very confident on his food. He cooks all the food himself and was very sure that I would like the food. Real hole in the wall. You will love it.

  • Scott M.

I probably shouldn't break out the five star rating since I've only been here once but I feel obligated to by how good the cheesesteaks were. We both got cheesesteaks made "Tony's way" that had some great extras liked cooked peppers and onions and this delicious hot sauce. Like I said, they were fantastic. Tony was quite nice and sincere about his cheesesteaks, saying that he knows them so well from having worked at Gino's in Philly. In any case, we're definitely heading back there to try the chicken cheesesteaks on wheat. Parking on the street can be limited, so Tony instructed us to park behind the building in the lot that's back there.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE! I moved to the area in December and come here alot. I thought this place was good when I had their cheesesteaks, then I tried the chicken cheese steaks... EVEN BETTER. I always get the "Chicken Real One" peppers, mushrooms, onions, sauce and cheese and its amazingggg. His hot sauce is delicious too I always load my sandwiches up with it. Besides this place having amazing cheese steaks, Tony is the man... my friends visit me from out of state and alwayssss request that we come here at some point of their trip. You will not be disappointed if you come here.. delicious food and great service

I tried the Real One Philly after reading that it was the best Philly Steak in Baltimore. It was official.....If your in the area and want a good Philly for a decent price. Check this place out. The Guy working behind the counter was real friendly too.

  • Amy B.

The cheesesteak was delicious and it was heavy on the meat. The fries were also very generous! The owner was funny and made sure I was enjoying my food. I will definitely go again. Gets crowded but they work fast and get through the line in no time!

Still the best place in Baltimore, Baltimore County (Towson) to get a Cheesesteak. This place has been in business for over 15 years and the quality has not changed. Tony the owner is always there, and he runs his business like a true professional. Always friendly and nice when you walk in. Never even Advertises; just depends on word-of-mouth. I hope his place never goes out of business. And forget about the lousy chains Subway & Jerrys next door. They never have and never will hold a candle to Real Thing. 412 York Road. Towson MD

A great little place to get a cheesesteak! I'm a huge fan of the chicken cheesesteak here! Best I've ever tasted. Everything is prepared for you once you order it, so you don't have to worry about it being cold. The place can get a bit loud with the clanking of the spatulas on the grill, but it just adds to the decor as does the owner. He's got a great sense of humor but if you take his words as literal, you'll misinterpret. Definitely try it and I'm sure you'll like the place.

Amazing! I don't know how I have missed this GEM in all these years. The sandwich was incredible, an Tony made the experience even better.

My wife and I found our way here via Yelp. As the other reviews pointed out the owner was very friendly and kidded around while taking our order and preparing it. Of course we ordered the Cheese-steak subs with fries and were extremely pleased with the meal. We came and went through the back door (plenty of public parking back there), but I can see how one would miss this place from the front. All in all, a great place to grab a sandwich at a reasonable price. I'll be back.

If you're looking for good quick food, this is the place. I've been going to The Real Thing for years and I have never had a bad meal. Everything is clean, and the owner is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Go and grab a cheese steak, what's stopping you.

I would fly to Towson just to have this cheese-steak. I can't say enough about The Real thing. Freshman year, I went there every Friday. They cut their meat off of one of those spinning rotisserie deals, toast the bun perfectly, my mouth is just watering thinking about it. Fries are cooked to order, so they always come out piping-hot and crispy. Additionally, the family that runs this place are really nice folks. I can't praise this place enough.

I have been eating at the real thing since i was 12. Im now 24. Tony the owner and one and only cook has been working there since the late 80s. He used to work at Ginos and decided to make his own cheese steak that was better then philli steaks. And thats what you get here. The best damn cheese steak in md. Some people argue about this cheese steak place and that, but in the end the real thing is the real thing. The chicken cheese steaks are mouth watering.

The best cheesesteak ever! The real thing was amazing along with the special hot sauce~ Drove from NJ to eat there and was worth the trip, the owner Tony, was great too :) Friendly and attentive to all the customers that were there...Wish him longevity and great success~~ I will def go back someday!

BEST CHEESE STEAK IN MARYLAND! By far! I've been going here for years and it's incredible. The service is always great. The owner/chef is one of the funniest people I've ever met and has a really great sense of humor. And his steaks are just incredible! They're nice and juicy, but not so much as to be really runny. They're absolutely perfect! If you're looking for a great cheese steak and you're in the Baltimore area, this is the best place to go. Haven't found anywhere in Maryland yet that has better cheese steaks.

The best cheesesteak I've ever had. Provolone, toasted bun, fresh meat (which Tony who owns the place said is the 'secret'), a bit of mushroom, onion and some spicy oil drizzled on top...a foodgasm. I happened to be staying in Towson rather than downtown and I needed some good food so I went to Chowhound and up came this place. God bless the Internet. PLEASURE.
