Maybe I'm coming from a more biased perspective since Southern California was chock-full of rotating sushi bars, but I really think Kyodai wasn't really up to the standard of a rotating sushi bar. I came in around 6:30 looking for a nice dinner with friends -- it was a nice atmosphere and there were already several groups of people seated at the sushi bar. I was pretty excited since I've always had great experiences at the revolving sushi bars that I've been to before. However upon closer inspection, there was not much variety available. I would say that there were only 4-5 different kinds of rolls out and they were just circulating many plates of the same type of roll. I got the spicy tuna and a shrimp tempura roll, both of which were pretty decent, as well as another spicy tuna roll that had salmon on top. It really didn't seem like there was much else to choose from, to be honest. They put out one eel roll later and one volcano roll right before we left, but honestly, the whole time I was sitting there I was kind of waiting for something new to be put out there. Perhaps I came at a bad time, but I say skip it!

I've probably been here about 5 times now and will not be returning after my last visit. Let's just say food poisoning isn't fun... This place draws a crowd mostly because it's the only rotating sushi bar around. That's what brought me in. Depending on when you go, there isn't always a ton on the rotating bar. Meaning you have like 4 rolls to choose from, and everything else you order (this isn't true during busier hours, but it's also harder to get a seat at the bar). The prices are oookay, definitely not cheap or a bargain. They will also stamp your parking pass if you park in the garage next door. Last time I went, I was meeting a friend for lunch. We ordered a few rolls off the rotating bar and carried on with our day. Until about 30 minutes later, we texted each other with the "are you feeling what I'm feeling" message... It wasn't pretty so I won't go into details, but both of us had the same exact symptoms within 30 minutes of leaving Kyodai and ordering different things. About two weeks later, I ran into someone else who told me they got food poisoning here as well. I'm not trying to scare anyone off or give the place a bad name, but it is what it is. I will NOT be returning to Kyodai, and I would warn all of you to be weary of what you order.

Great place to go for a quick lunch! My boyfriend and I stopped in for lunch because I had a sushi craving. It's nice to be able to eat right away - just grab from the bar and eat. We had 4 different plates from the bar, which were all tasty and shared a miso soup. We spent about $20 on our meal. Definitely a quick and affordable lunch. :)

Check your bill at the end to make sure it adds up correct.. twice in one week they calculated it wrong. If I wouldn't have checked, I would have overpaid.

This should be commom sense, but, just in case: you won't get the BEST sushi in town from a conveyor belt. But, you will have the most fun eating it! I didn't order from the menu, but there looked to be a couple of interesting rolls. I chose 4 rolls from the belt....their spicy tuna and salmon were both tasty and fresh! Beware the calamari salad...I saw that thing make its rounds over and over. When you've sat there for 45 mintues, and you're seeing the same plate of something pass by the entire time, you want to tell every person just walking in "Stay away from that dish!" Solid service. College crowd. Nice decor--better than yoru typical Japanese flare.

Every time my partner and I walk into Kyodai we are greeted with large smiles escorting us to our seats. The servers are very quick, friendly and provide us with great service. The sushi is perfect. Not too cold and not too warm. Sushi is divided into 4 pieces per plate then divided by price onto different colored plates. This is a great location for a quick and delicious sushi even on a budget! It's a definite recommendation for anyone coming into the Towson area.

In a pinch this place is great if you want quick and inexpensive sushi. I've been here twice and had a good experience both times. I like the atmosphere and the staff is attentive.

We live just outside of DC, but ventured to Towson to visit our favorite conveyor-belt sushi bar, Kyodai! We arrived about an hour after its 4 PM opening time on Sunday, so the kaiten was well stocked when we arrived (all part of our plan). Everything was tasty and good, and the wait staff was kind and attentive. It was not very busy, so we had our choice of items from the conveyor. As great as it was, I wish there had been more people there just for the chatter and hustle & bustle that generally makes eating at Kyodai extra fun. Since there were so few customers during our visit, the lone sushi chef wasn't creating many new dishes while we sat at the bar -- that was a little disappointing. The same items was on the conveyor for our whole visit, and the rolls with shrimp tempura were no longer warm when we took them from the conveyor. Despite the slight decrease of amazingness due to the light customer load, I love coming here, and I wish that we lived closer, or maybe that Kyodai would move closer to us!

I discovered Kyodai over four years ago and now that I live out of state, it is one of my must go visit restaurants when I come back home for visits. It's by no means the best sushi you'll have-- but it's a great selection and a really laid back atmosphere. I'd have to say I'd disagree with the pricing mentioned above because I have rarely spent more than $15 here and always leave full. During quieter times, the rotating bar is turned off which some would find frustrating, but I actually sometimes enjoy it more that way because the sushi chefs are very friendly and interactive when they aren't too overwhelmed. During busier hours, like lunch hour during the week or weekend evenings, you may have to wait a few minutes to sit at the bar but it never takes too long and the best part is that you can eat as soon as you take a seat! I highly suggest this restaurant-- whether you're a broke college student, a couple looking for a new date night venue or anyone in between-- if you like sushi, give it a try!

I love this place. It's fun, it's fast, and there's is always something tasty going 'round. Go there when it's busy, you'll get fresher rolls, and usually more of a selection. The service is always super friendly, and attentive. I only wish there were more vegetarian rolls on the belt, but it's not really an issue since I can just order a couple.

It's okay not that great. It's not clear that you have to order certain items from the kitchen and other items from the men that are in the sushi bar. Don't make a mistake by ordering Gyoza to the men because they will have an attitude.

After a lifetime of anime for my sister and Sophia Coppola movies for me, it was long overdue that the two of us should visit a rotating sushi bar. We were pleased. Far from selling out in taste for the sake of novelty, Kyodai follows a tasteful menu that provides for variety as well as substance without breaking the bank. We had the spicy tuna, the yellowtail, and the eel; all were lovely. Sit by the corner in front of a chef so you can see the freshest options and don't be afraid to request a roll (or tip when you do). The owner is adorable and will gush with pride about the restaurant if given the chance! Oh, and they validate parking, which is great for Baltimorean student commuters!

Sushi quality is sooo mediocre. Out of all the sushi places I've tried nearby (sushi hana, san sushi, orient, towson best, Sichuan house, and even Safeway) this is definitely the worse quality. It is not cheap either. Ambiance is fairly dull. Not a good place for a date at all. The rotating sushi machine has not much variety in sushi either. And this place would get another star if it was one of those sushi boat rotating machines.

We've recently started getting our order to go and it's upped the rating! They'll make anything you request. I always get a smoked salmon and cucumber roll and a red snapper with scallion roll now! The staff start to get to know you and treat you like family. They're really good about including sauces in our order as well. We're a family of dippers so we always ask for the orange sauce, sriracha and soy. I also forgot to add that they validate parking if you're dining in. I'll always be a loyal customer!

This place is the best place to go for quick and affordable sushi. The basic most popular sushi plates go around on a conveyor belt and you get to pick from there. You're charged by plate and it's done by color depending on what you order. You get what you pay for. It's a pretty cheap place but if you're expecting 5 star sushi that's not what you're gonna find. I'm giving this place 5 stars for what you pay in comparison to the quality. The servers are very attentive. Tips: closed on Monday and make sure you park in the garage and get them to stamp your ticket that way it's free!

Concept = great.... Execution = awful I love sushi, but I write this review with a bad taste in my mouth and a queasy feeling in my stomach. The idea of a rotating/conveyer belt sushi restaurant is definitely pretty cool but not new by any means. This really only works if the fish and chef are above mediocre. The food: 1. The fish is not fresh. This means that the texture and flavor is off. The fish was too soft (not chilled properly and starting to get old) and the flavor was missing - where is that mouth coating fab flavor that comes from salmon and tuna?!? (tasted the fish in both roll and sashimi form... both were bad) 2. The soy sauce is "light" - let's be serious... Soy sauce is that amazing mix of both sweet and salty - Lite soy is achieved through just using less salt by using less soy sauce and more water- EW IF ANYTHING.. at least give me the OPTION to have regular soy sauce. 3. The pickled ginger didn't have the right flavor to it. The marinade was off and the ginger was just that.. marinated NOT pickled. 4. The rolls were a mess! The Japanese are all about the balance of delicate flavors and balance of components The rolls had a THICK, THiCK layer of rice.. NOT balanced. at all to the bad fish. 5. we ordered Shrimp Tempura just to order something different than what was on the conveyer belt.... Here is the difference between something that is MORE authentic to Japanese cooking and one that is more..... maybe Chinese? THe batter was extremely thick.. Tempura is prized for crispy, light flakes. All in all... this place is good if you dont want to wait for sushi... but if you do like sushi... DONT waste your time. Sorry, Kikumoto... but you need some serious improvements.

Kyodai, the rotating sushi bar in Towson, is fun for a handful of reasons: - if you're hungry it's great to just sit down and start eating without having to wait for your order to be made - if you're not sure how much you want to eat, you can pace yourself easily since the plates going by are four-piece half rolls - if you want to try a roll that you haven't seen before, a half roll is much less of a commitment than a whole one - if you're with a crowd that likes to eat different amounts and not try to figure out whose order is whose on one of the big sushi boats, it's super easy to manage with a group and calculate separate checks since your color-coded plates pile up in front of you - the owners are very friendly, though often the service is a little rushed when it's packed in there (understandably) - if you do takeout, you can just select a few plates off of the belt and they'll pack it right up for you - no waiting! - delicious miso soup and great fried bananas - validated parking! It may not be the best quality sushi (Sushi Hana wins for Towson) or the biggest menu (Thai One On across the street), but it's definitely fun.

I came here for a combo lunch dinner one thursday (~4pm) and starving, I was waiting for sushi to fly down the belt. Sadly to say it wasn't happening. There was only one chef since it was off hours and the same sad rolls kept going down the belt. The prices are also quite high for some of the rolls and they weren't the best quality. It was a new experience, though not as good as some rotating sushi that I've had in Asia.

Kyodai is a fun place to go with one or two friends and have some sushi. Don't expect to go with a big group of friends and have crazy and exotic rolls, though. Kyodai is a rotating sushi bar and colored plates go around the conveyor belt in front of you. All you have to do is look for a dish you want, pick it up, place it in front of you, and eat! If you go with a couple of friends, everyone can sit at the bar and easily talk to one another. If you go with more, then you'll have to sit at one of the tables and it's not as fun because you don't have any dishes rotating in front of you and that's the whole fun of going to Kyodai. The plates are different colors and the price you pay depends on the color of the plate. The yellow and green plates are less than $3 and the yellow and orange are about $4.50 and the plates with pictures of sushi rolls are less than $6. I like Kyodai because of the readiness of the sushi. The only thing is you don't know how many times it's rotated around the restaurant and if it's raw fish, then it could be iffy. You can always ask the sushi chef to make a fresh roll for you, but they will try to give you one of the dishes on the conveyor belt if it's already in rotation. It seems as though the same staff is always working and they get to know all their customers. They are very friendly and the owner seats the customers when they arrive. When you're finished, let the waitress know and she'll come over and write up the check for you. No matter how many different color plates you have, she knows the exact price of the bill and is a genius with the addition of the plates and drinks with the tax...no calculator needed!

I used to frequent this place every Friday night for about a year and a half. The food used to be really good, and they will (or would) make any sushi for you fresh--even if there was one already in rotation. However, the best chef they had left, and the quality went downhill fast. The other thing I don't like is how young the crowd is. I'm not old by any means (I'm under 30) but I simply don't want to listen to a group of high schoolers getting drunk off of sake thanks to their fake I.D's. Being young isn't a bad thing either; but it really spoils the mood. It's a decent place for a college town sushi bar, but this is not the best sushi joint in Baltimore.

Walked in, sat down, and walked out. The first problem was they did not serve alcohol. The sushi rotating in front of you even looked prepackaged and gross. The place also was hot/muggy and smelled horrendous.May have been an off night, but even the couple of people I was with thought the same thing and were glad to get out of there.

Kyodai is banginn!!! Every time I go they are very friendly and helpful. The set up is very cool with the rotating bar and plate pricing options. I crave there sushi randomly and cant stop thinking about there orange sauce its soo good. I intend to go here more often.

If you are hungry and you need to be fed immediately, this is the place to go. Kyodai is what I consider as instant gratification. Is like a McDonald's for Sushi, in and out we go. Except with way nicer food choices (unless you are a burgerphile) Kyodai is the only rotating sushi bar in Baltimore, and it is perfect for people that want to try something new by looking at it first and pulling it off the conveyor belt. Yes I said conveyor belt!! The way it works is you sit down at the counter and sushi plates are transported on conveyor belts around the table to multiple people. Put this way, is like picking up your luggage at the airport. Different color plates mean different prices. The sushi is decent, but nothing extraordinary. I noticed that the choices on the conveyor belts is mostly rolls, nice rolls, but still rolls. Crab rolls, spicy tuna roll, rainbow rolls, salmon roll, tempura roll, California roll, cucumber roll... OK you get the point. The good thing is that you can also order lets say inari roll or anything else off the menu. The taste was fairly good, but the execution and final appearance of the sushi was not as fine-tuned as other places I've been to. Everything tasted very fresh. The other cool thing about about the rotation system is that you can monitor how much you spend, as different color dishes mean different cost. With the same token it can get pricey if you pick a couple of the expensive items and you are a big eater. Only negatives are: large crowds on Friday nights, and no liquor other than sake is serve. PS: You can park in the garage for free. Early reservation is recommended during busy hours.

Great rotating sushi bar and reasonably priced. Not where I'd go if I'm in the mood for specialty rolls or lots of sashimi, but the standard fare is great.

This is probably my favorite sushi place in all of Maryland. It has super fresh sushi and it just keeps going round and round, tempting you even when you are too full to get up. Whether you just want one plate or ten plates this place is good for people of any budget. Just make sure not to eat a lot too fast or you will get full really fast! You can either sit at the bar or sit at a table, if you sit at a table you have to order the sushi rather than just plucking it off the bar though.

  • Elliott P.

Kyodai is unique to the area in that it is a rotating sushi bar. Essentially sushi plates go around on a conveyer belt in front of you and if you see something you like, you grab it. While the sushi is not the world's greatest, it is by no means bad. The best part about the experience is that if you're hungry you can just sit down and dig in. The prices are also very reasonable. Most plates contain 4 rolls and cost between 3 and 5 dollars depending on the contents and how complicated it is/looks. Kyodai is also great for single patrons because they don't take up a whole table and waste no time eating. Kyodai is a great restaurant to have in Towson!

Ehhh, not impressed with selection of sushi. Not a big fan of having my food carted around a bar of people 4-5 times before eating it.

  • Kate D.

The concept is cool but not worth it. We had never been there before and wanted to try it out. We go in and get push right to a seat, wasn't told that there was a full menu to order from. The plates are 2.95, 4.95, and 5.95. But all of the good rolls are on the more expensive plates and they are not even that special. It's not worth it because it's only 4 pieces to a roll and they were all simple rolls (California, shredded crab meat, and eel). The same rolls kept coming around the belt. The rolls were not bad just not worth it for the price. The one plus was they put spicy mayo or the belt so you can get it when you want. Its nice if you are hungry because you don't have to wait for it to be prepared but just not worth it to me.

I tried Kyodai out mainly for the novelty of a rotating sushi bar. I've seen kaiten-zushi in movies and video games and thought it could be neat to try. It was fun to try a wide variety of food in my little meal. I also appreciate the speed at which you can dine. I have a rather short lunch break, but I was able to walk here, eat, and get back to the office in my allotted time. The staff were also very kind. However, the fun of the conveyor belt wore off quickly. Even the freshest pieces didn't taste much better than supermarket sushi. The selection wasn't impressive. It's like I was dutifully filling up my fuel tank, not getting happily lost in the flavors and mouth-feel of the food. If you're new to sushi, this miiiiight be a good place for you to sample many different types of sushi in one sitting? Maybe? But it'd probably be better to go to a nicer sushi joint with a ton of friends and split 5-10 rolls among everyone.

  • Willow M.

I have been going here regularly for 3 years now. The staff is friendly and the sushi chef Jimmy will create any roll i ask for. Plus, you can walk in, sit down and start eating in under 2 minutes!

  • Amy C.

My uncle was working here as one of the sushi chefs until recently, so my review is a little biased. First off, I LOVE sushi belts because you get a good sampling of different rolls. Secondly, the roles were flavorful. And the fried banana dessert is a perfect ending. My major complaint is that the sushi doesn't taste fresh.

    (3)
  • Dan G.

Staff is friendly. The sushi is great but a little on the pricey side. What that extra money gets you is the novelty of the rotating bar.

  • Lara S.

One of the best sushi bars I've ever been too. I've just moved to NC and I can seriously say I miss this place. Their sushi was always fresh. I've never had to wait. The staff is attentive and very friendly. I recommend ordering the Salmon Imperial Roll (Crabmeat wrapped in Salmon drizzled with a tangy sauce and baked to perfection. 2 rolls per order). It's not on the menu and takes a little long to bake, but it is worth the wait. I've also enjoyed the peppered tuna roll. I can't say enough about Kyodai.

  • Liz C.

My boyfriend and I came here for the novelty factor of the rotating sushi bar. It was pretty cool, novel for us, with a relaxing atmosphere. However, the quality of the sushi was mediocre at best. It was okay, but I don't think I'd be back. I think the defining moment was when I opened the lid on what appeared to be a tuna roll of some sorts and I was just overwhelmed by a fishy smell. In general it seems that they use low quality fish and try to cover for it with sauces/other flavors. I also got some red tuna sashimi, the pan-seared type with pepper on the outside. It was cold, stiff, and didn't really melt in your mouth like that sort of tuna should, and tasted WAY too peppery. The rotating sushi bar also presents the problem of sushi being out for too long. Cold rolls warm up, and hot rolls cool down and form condensation on the inside of the lids, so you can hardly even see what's inside. Also, of course, the unpopular rolls keep on the rotation while better rolls get snapped up quickly, compounding the problem. I'm pretty spoiled when it comes to sushi quality, though. My boyfriend thought the sushi tasted fine, so I'll bump this up to 3 stars. However, in my opinion, the specialty rolls are NOT worth the list price of almost $13 (or $5.95 for a plate). I've had much better sushi elsewhere for cheaper or equivalent prices.

  • Jonathan G.

Very much the McDonald's of sushi restaurants. You walk in, plop down, ask for a drink, and take the sushi dishes you want. That's it. The quality of the sushi is the only thing to consider. For most of the dishes, the quality is about average. But then, it's a bit hard to screw up the basics. The upper crust of maki rolls, however, are a bit scary, and I'd be afraid of actually eating them. Some maki rolls are supposed to be hot, or at least warm, and that they're served cold is a bit concerning. With that in mind, I don't really see a reason to ever visit except to show someone the novelty of the rotating bar. There are many sushi restaurants nearby, all of which are higher quality.

  • Mj O.

I think the concept of a rotating sushi bar is way cooler than the actual implementation. It is a great novel way to try different sushi that you've potentially not tried before. You get a couple (it ranges from 3-6 pieces) of sushi on colored plates. Each color plate signifies a different price. Currently, maybe because there is renovations going on, and their entrance has a big fence around it, parking at the Towson Common Garage is free. But there are numerous street parking in the area that is findable. I agree with most of the others here that the quality of their sushi is so-so. Not stellar but not the pits either.. Most of the ones we ate were good/acceptable (seaweed salad, spicy tuna roll, dragonboat roll, dragon? roll, seared tuna slices, calamari salad). The volcano roll should be taken off once the sauce gets cooler--- not left on the belt, since that roll is suppose to be eaten hot/warm -- not room temp. This was the one roll that i had yesterday that i wish i could take back--- lifting the roll showed me a congealing mess of a sauce underneath-- not pretty.

Eating at Kyodai is analogous to this all but too familiar experience: You're a little dazed after your flight, you stroll thoughtlessly behind the crowd towards baggage claim [Letter, Number], and you wait impatiently for the conveyor belt to start moving. As the luggage spills down onto the rotating metal plates, your heart starts skipping beats as you envision your bag just out of sight. When it's finally spotted, you position your body for "The Snatch." Understanding the embarrassing consequences of missing "The Snatch," you hone in on the perfect grip and move in with one fell swoop that can only be described as both super smooth and undoubtedly athletic. Success! What an awesome feeling! Now imagine this same feeling, this time edible! Kyodai is fun with its lively atmosphere, its color-coded plates (each color represents a different price), and its action/impulse oriented food selection style. You have the option of regular seating but c'mon, the words "Rotating Sushi Bar" are in the title of the restaurant! I beg you to experience what you came here to experience and take a seat at the bar. The down sides of my Kyodai experience included food that wasn't necessarily fresh (too many times around the conveyor belt I suppose), bar seats that seemed cramped (maybe it's because I'm taller than most), and an experience that didn't live up to the hype. I'd also say that for the quality of food, Kyodai was a bit overpriced. Overall, the exhilaration of snatching your favorite sushi off a moving conveyor belt makes Kyodai worth visiting, but don't go expecting delicious greatness. Honestly, don't even go expecting delicious goodness.

[Too bad we can't award 0 stars. If you're giving more than 1 star for this place you need to go to NY or DC to try good sushi!!! ] The concept is fun and there's a good floating sushi place in San Fran if you're ever there. But this place is awful and generally smelly & grungy. First of all it's a run down decor and the staff is usually watching the TV. The sushi has been riding around for awhile so its not fresh. Service was terrible as well. Afterwards we went back to the parking garage and witnessed a guy pissing in the open....an appropriate ending to a bad experience. Maybe this place is great for drunken students? * The best sushi I've found in Baltimore (so far) is at Whole Foods.

This spot score points for being lightning fast. I work in Towson and am bound by the bus so when I want to leave the area I jump on the Crazy 8 and head up to Kyodai, pound some sushi and jump back on the bus. Lickity split. This is the DMT od sushi joints. Sushi is made right there and depending on how many folks are there usually doesn't sit around very long. The quality is so-so. Not bad but not stellar. It's the quickness that brings me here. I'm in and out witin a 15 minute time frame and never feel rushed. When I don't wanna lollygag around and hear about your office drama at lunch I escape to Kyodai where I sit and listen to other people's office drama. At least I can tune them out. I would never tune you out...Never. Pass the ginger.

Ah Kyodai, my go-to sushi place while I was in college. They didn't have the most extravagant rolls, but you can sit down right away and start eating! The volcano rolls, eel, and shrimp tempura were always my favorite, and the sushi was very consistent. The staff was always very friendly and attentive, and I have seen them, on multiple occasions, helping newcomers figure out what was in each roll and pick ones they might like. You can eat straight off the conveyor belt, and even order specific rolls to be made-to-order for you. And I can't even stress how inexpensive it is! Definitely the best sushi value. I've been to other rotating sushi bars in various cities, but Kyodai will always have a special place in my memories.

I just went here this weekend with my family and had such a fun time! I had never been to a rotating sushi bar and don't know of one in the dc/md area, so this was a treat. The restaurant is pretty small and obviously focuses on the rotating bar in the middle with bar seating. There are a few tables along one wall for those who want to order off the menu. The sushi was pretty good quality, although I thought some of the toppings(like shredded crab) was a little excessive which made it hard to eat. They do seem to have some different sushi combos, like spicy tuna topped with eel which was pretty cool to try and a baked volcano roll. They also offer edamame, seaweed salad, sauces and the occasional sashimi plate on the bar. The pricing is cool too bc they charge you depending on the plate color/design at the end. I had a great time and will be back on other visits!

Kirin was cold. Sushi was above above average. Liked the rotating belt. It needs some Hello Kitty toys, maybe put beers on the bar. Great lunch spot in Towson or gimmick first date.

  • Mary J.

I used to like the place. Now it is some average quality, annoying wait stuff that is in your business all the time when you are there (picking covers, asking questions etc), sushi is becoming to be too pricey and for the same price or cheaper I can just go to Wegmans, buy myself a tray of refrigerated freshly made sushi (I have no idea for how long does the food rotate on Kyodai belt), come home and have a meal with drinks (Kyodai only serves some limited variety of beer). Meh.

I have been here many times, and I really like the sushi/the atmosphere, although I wish they wouldn't always stick us right next to the door (especially when it's cold). However, if there aren't that many people there, they won't make a lot of different kinds of sushi which is disappointing. I also have seen some sushi rotate by that I can clearly tell is not fresh. I do love how the spicy mayo sits right there, and the waitresses are very good at clearing the plastic tops. However, it is way overpriced for what you get, and I wish they listed what was rotating! I've only learned from going there so many times.

Great if you are in a hurry! However, it's not the freshest sushi on the planet. I did enjoy the atmosphere and the staff were friendly.

The sushi quality here is between a nice sushi restaurant and sushi buffet. It's not great but very good. The nice thing is the large choices of sushi present with immediate gratification.

I felt that is just a novelty and not great quality of food. If you want to take a person for the idea behind the restaurant then this is a good place to go. If you want good quality sushi....this is definitely not your place to go.

I've only eaten at a few rotating sushi bars in my time, and while they are fantastic for the eat quick, get in get out mentality. I'm not too impressed with the sushi there. From what my wife and I noticed there were 5 rolls going around. Crab meat, Salmon, tempura shrimp, California, and those 4 with hot mayo sauce on the top. You can grab a plate with a sign on it for a banana milkshake or soft shelled crab as well. We were here at lunch so the whole bar was full and sushi was being added at a regular pace. In the hour that we stayed we were waiting to see if the chefs changed it up by putting out different rolls, but discovered, no. Same ones kept rollin past us. In that regard I was disappointed, however at least the rolls were fresh and we could choose the level we wanted to pay.

My first time at a rotating sushi bar so I was kinda excited. It was a unique experience and I had fun. Although the place is small, it was quick because there was really no order taking and no waiting for food. There wasn't as much selection as I would have liked, but it was fun and the food that I ate was good. They also have different sauces that you can use, i really like the spicy mayo ^_^

Its cool as a novelty and the idea of it is great. But the sushi is sub par so I try not to go

Love love LOVE rotating sushi! This is a really good place to go if you are a beginner with sushi because you can see each plate as it rotates around the bar and take the plates that look the most appetizing to you.

Fantastic atmosphere and sushi, just wish the selection were a bit more interesting on the rotation. They always seem to end up with a bunch of shrimp creations circling untouched - shrimp, bleh.

A friend and I tried this restaurant based on the few reviews on Yelp! The area that Kyodai is located is a great place to venture around since its close to a mall and theaters. We were immediately greeted by the daughter of the owner, Angie (killer smile) and served on by Jay. This is a family restaurant and they are top notch in terms of service. It was a busy Friday night but sometimes thats how you know you're at a local favorite hangout. The sushi deck is rotating and you can grab whatever you want to eat and even order a la carte. I had several of the dishes on the conveyor and also ordered some of my favorites (salmon, uni, hamachi) to compare with my other favorite sushi establishment. Not disappointed one bit and I'd definitely go again when I get a chance. The restaurant isn't know for exotic japanese dishes, but few are these days. It knows what the locals want, and they definitely deliver. Thumbs up to Angie(daughter) and Tony(owner)!

The concept is fun, even if not executed extremely well. They don't have a wide selection either, but what they had was nice. The seared white tuna and octopus salad were very good.

  • Tricia P.

Even though the sushi is pretty good, it's not the best. I love this place because it's cheap, quick, and convenient. Cool concept. If I am just picking rolls my bill usually costs 10-15 dollars.

Sad! This is the first time yelp told me wrong!!! The sushi here is disgusting. We had fun because of the rotating bar and were just laughing at the hot mess of sushi under the "mystery" domes (since they were all fogged up, you basically have to guess what is inside), but I will never come back here. $50 for two for dinner without any drinks and we just had seven different tiny plates of worse than supermarket sushi. If you do end up going here, skip the rotating bar and just order nigiri style; the fish will taste better and you'll avoid the guess-what-sushi-is-hiding-under-this-lid-FAIL.

I can't eat shellfish so I don't usually eat from the rotating bar but the sushi we ordered was pretty good. About half of the rotating dishes were really foggy but the ones I could see looked yummy.

We drive all the way from Gaithersburg, MD to have dinner here! The sushi is very good and who doesn't love a rotating sushi bar?! My fav is the shrimp tempura rolls and edemame (sometimes you need to ask the waitress to bring you an order). Also try the "special sauce" that goes around the belt... yum! Only down side is the limited seating around the bar, so you might have to wait a while during busy hours/days and their selection isn't as large as a regular sushi restaurant. Make sure you get your ticket validated if your parked in the garage = free parking :)

Kyodai can be coy - best approach is to make friendly overtures and seek recommendations. Its public face is the rotating sushi bar. It's cool eye candy but a gimmic that never does it for me. I'll look at what's up, maybe grab something to take the edge off, but that's it - variety can be nonexistent. Core content is rolls with whatever-and-cream-cheese, rolls with shrimp tempura, and tuna rolls. If the crowd is making special requests, the staff will sometimes put up selections from those orders. It's then that you'll see edamame, seeweed salad, tuna tartare, volcano rolls, etc... If you choose to wait for these items to appear, you could be waiting a long time - better to special-order what you want as soon as you sit down. Kyodai has a significant 'volcano-roll' side. I'm not into the hot-gloppy-fish-salad-wrapped-in-nori rolls, and these were so prevalent during a couple of my visits that I suspected Kyodai didn't have much more to offer - made me feel blah about the place. They started presenting us with more subtle and finely crafted rolls (one standout is wrapped in a band of cucumber instead of nori) at our request. These offer the variety and pleasant surprises that make me remember them. Now I mostly order sashimi from the menu, place a couple of special-orders, and let the chefs surprise me. The fish is quite good, but variety isn't huge. When the uni is fresh, it's a must-have. The kitchen offers cooked fish if someone doesn't do the raw fish thing. The staff makes special requests very easy - they're always circulating, friendly, and ever-eager to take requests. (Don't request the miso - not worth it.) The food comes out quickly and is exactly what's ordered. Free parking: park in the next-door garage and have Kyodai stamp your parking as you pay your bill.

I love going to this place. The atmosphere is so much fun and you can eat right away. But the sushi selection is limited and the servings are small- 4 pieces to a plate. So if you're hungry and want a selection, your bill can add up pretty quickly. But if you're happy with endless Philadelphia rolls, then have at it. I like coming here with friends and hanging out, if I'm not absolutely starving. But dessert is a must here; their green tea ice cream is awesome, as is their banana tempura with honey sauce.

This was my first time at Kyodai. I have to preface this review by saying that I recently experienced a rotating sushi bar in Philadelphia, PA that had some of the most delicious sushi I have ever had - so the bar was already set high to begin with. For presentation, the sushi gets a good score - it's the taste that I found to be lacking. I do love that I can have instant gratification and just grab whatever I wanted. This particular day, the variety was lacking as well. There were plates upon plates of shrimp tempura and California rolls. The volcano roll was decent, but not in the top 5 in Maryland. There were a lot of "Amateur Rolls" as I call it rotating on the belt. Most of the meal I think was spent staring at the belt as if something new was going to pop up - even though non of the sushi chefs were rolling. The price was okay - but I think if you venture not too far away, you can have better grade sushi. The service was great and friendly. My drink never fell past half full and as soon as you picked a plate, someone was there to take the lid away. I will return for the rotating bar, but this was not a favorite.

I headed out here this past Thursday night with some gal pals. I have walked by it a million times and finally got to go. There are 2 ways to sit down and eat: 1) Sit at the bar that has the moving conveyor belt and grab plates as they pass you by 2) sit at a table and place an order or jump and grab whatever plate you want off the conveyor belt When you arrive the staff is very welcoming and friendly. Plates are color-coded by price ranging from $2.25 to $5.50. The worst part about the belt is none of the plates are labeled. However, feel free to ask the person next to you or the staff. When your meal's over, a server totals up the stack of plates sitting on the bar in front of you. They also have a menu you can also order from a that includes the typical teriyaki, udon noodles, sushi and sashimi plates, and tempura dishes. (we ordered from the menu instead of grabbing plates) I started with a bowl of Kyodai's miso soup ($1.50)- wasn't the best I have ever had but ti also wasnt the worst. It had the broth, seaweed and tofu. I then had a Philly Roll (3-4 pieces for $2.25) and the NY Roll- smoked salmon, asparagus, fish roe and avocado (8-10 pieces for around $8.00). Overall it was good. It wasn't the best nor the worst- average and good prices! PS- Parking is free (2 hours) in the Towson Commons garage (have your ticket validated)

This place has a unique idea and its fun to try but the sushi is only fair. It reminds me of the grocery store sushi.

Rather unimpressed. The seats were uncomfortable at the Sushi bar and the food was just OK. Not enough variety on the rotating sushi, and I'm surprised it was all rolls. I expected better.

  • H T.

1 star for being unique in having a conveyor belt of sushi moving around like a train... But, the sushi fogged up the cover so you couldn't really see the sushi. There wasn't labels so you don't know what the sushi on the dish was. Most of the sushi had dry rice and dry ingredients..not too fresh You pay per dish and depending on the color of the dish, there's a diff price. Volcano roll wasn't the volcano roll I usually get... If you want to go for the experience feel free, but if you want good quality sushi go elsewhere...

Very good place to just check out. Like the rotating bar setup. Although when I'm there with 5 friends, it's kinda hard to talk to each other. The sushi was not bad. I've had better, but this was good enough for me to enjoy 6 plates. And you can also custom order stuff directly from the chefs in front of you. The place is also affordable ~ $15-20 is what I usually pay. Overall, I'd recommend to check out this place if you want to just try something different.

I have been going to Kyodai since they first opened. Great place for a first date! It can get pretty crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings, so you may have to wait for a seat. But, in the end, it's usually worth it. The staff is great--I've never felt rushed to leave to make room for other patrons.

We tend to visit this place regularly, as it's easy to get in and out of, is quick and very well priced. If you're looking for fancy, showy or more authentic, skip over Kyodai. The big draw is, of course, the rotating sushi bar. The sushi chefs are constantly making dishes and setting them out on the bar for all the patrons to grab at will. It makes things a bit easier since there is no ordering or waiting, so it satisfies that immediate gratification desire. Which is also what makes it a quick dinner if you don't have a lot of time. I also like just choosing what looks good as is passes by. I do get some regular dishes, but if something catches my eye or looks interesting, I can try it out. The sushi itself is basic, but good and fresh. They have some rolls made with fake crab, but I pass over those since I don't like them. They have one dish that is tuna and avocado served in the hollowed out avocado shell that is wonderful ($5.95). A more plain roll is the shrimp tempura ($2.95) that begs to be eaten with the mayo sauce that also goes around on the bar. The prices are excellent, and the staff is very warm and friendly. They never fail to make us feel right at home. Since the location is in Towson, and the prices are so low, expect to see a lot of college kids. Which makes for some hilarious overheard conversations. Parking is readily available in the garage and they'll validate your ticket. If you're in a larger group, it may be harder to find a spot at the bar, so you may want to be seated at a table. Less fun, for sure, but you still have the friendly staff looking after you. Sometimes there can be a wait, but it's never been for very long, maybe 5 minutes, tops. Since Kyodai has so much going for it beyond the sushi, I gave it 4 stars, and it will probably remain a simple favorite of mine for a while.

We stuck to eating sushi off of the rotating bar rather than ordering from the menu. There's about a dozen options you can pull off the bar, none of which were all that impressive. The service was very friendly, and the crowd was very college kid. I would go back if I was in a hurry as there's no waiting for your food if you can get a seat at the bar, but then again, this is about as good as you could find in the prepared food section at a grocery store.

Kyodai is one of the few rotating sushi bars around MD that I've found. Basically, you come in and sit at a bar where there is a couple asian dudes making sushi in the middle of a bar and there are seats around them with a conveyor belt that rotates the sushi around. The sushi or rolls are placed on different colored plates and depending on what color you pick, the costs vary between $3 to $7. I usually pick up all the expensive ones and if you are a fatty like me, i'm warning you to not come here starving because you will really rack up the plates and before you know it, you'll be dropping $30 on your own.... I love their salmon sushi and volcano roll the best. They have good dragon rolls and their other rolls are pretty good too. If you really don't want to sit at the bar and would rather get a table you can do that too but I like coming here and sitting at the bar plus you meet some interesting people next to you and it's nice to watch the ppl make the sushi right in front of you. It gets crowded at times but it's worth the wait for me.

I had never been to a rotating sushi bar before and was a bit apprehensive, but it turned out to be really fun. My friend and I found two seats at the "bar" and ordered japanese beers. The plates are different colors which indicates the price of the sushi. You just grab what you want and stack your plates which are tallied when you're done. I loved almost everything I tried, and the bill was lower than I expected it to be. The only downside to this place is that it can become packed with obnoxious and loud teenagers due to the proximity to bunch of schools.

The wife and I love coming to Kyodai when we're tired or in a rush and need a quick sushi fix. To be honest the sushi here isn't spectacular but its good. The appeal here is the rotating sushi bar when you can grab whatever you want as it passes by. The manager is friendly and helpful. If you need something that isn't going by or something off the menu don't hesitate to ask!

I was so hopeful when I found there was a Kaiten Sushi restaraunt in the area. I decided to try it last night (Saturday) with a couple of friends, one who lived in Japan for several years and his wife who just moved here from Japan. We're on a quest to find authentic and good Japanese restaurants in the area. If you are used to Kaiten's from Japan or even Genki Sushi in Hawaii-you will be dissappointed. It won't hit the spot. The selection was limited and consisted primarily of rolls. Rice makes or breaks good sushi-this was ok. Not bad, but my friends thought it really needed a bit more vinegar. On a positive note-the salmon nigiri was fresh and tasted fine. The service was worthy of one star, they never came back to refill tea, etc. The cashier was extremely rude and snappish. I picked up the wrong credit card receipt, she grabbed it back and proceeded to lecture me like a child on why I could not keep that receipt. Wow! Felt like I was in Beijing! So, I give it a two, because if you've not been to a Kaiten place, it's an experience and you wont' have anything to compare it to anyway. I noticed there were a bunch of restaurants and stores within 1/2 mile of this place-including two other Sushi restaurants, a Cheesecake factory and a Trader Joe's store. It looks to be a good place to spend an afternoon.

3.5 stars. Cool place because I can (or could've) just sat at the rotating sushi bar and picked up whatever plates of freshly-made sushi rolls I wanted instantly The chef is in the middle making all the rolls, and then places the plates on top of a rotating glass that surrounds him. The plates range from $2.25 for 4 pieces of California rolls to $5.50 for 4 pieces of the more special rolls, and you just pick whatever plate your heart (or stomach) desires. We also ordered sashimi (surf clam, red snapper, and yellowtail) pieces off the regular menu (since those weren't on the rotating bar). The rolls itself were pretty good, not great. Somewhat bland, but at least decent-sized. The sashimi was yummy (I don't think I've ever had "surf clam" before and rarely order red snapper sashimi). Since we couldn't find four seats in a row at the bar, we just sat at a table and walked over to the rotating bar and grabbed whatever I wanted. Decent sushi, decently-priced, cool rotating-sushi-bar aspect. I'd recommend this for anyone who comes to this area.

Sitting at a bar with a rotating conveyor belt with sushi makes for a pretty exciting meal! The sushi was surprisingly very good and fresh! It was nice to see the sushi chefs make the rolls right in front of you and serve it immediately. I got 5 rolls for $15 so you definitely get a lot of bang for your buck. However, there was something that was ten times better than the sushi... the fried oreos! They are AMAZING!

  • Zo T.

This place didn't impress me very much. I went here after a couple colleagues were raving about it. The rice to filling ratio was bad and the fish itself was bad. I also ordered the shumai which was really really disappointing. The sushi belt gets turned on and the sushi gets put on in phases. The sushi was bad and I won't be coming back. Before I left I thought I'd give their dessert a try to redeem themselves. But alas, their fried Oreo was also a big big disappointment and a total waste of money. You're really paying for the experience, so if you don't mind that then it's an alright place. But there is a sushi joint across the street that has way better sushi sans the rotating sushi belt.

Good sushi and great atmosphere. Pricing is a little confusing with each plate color equalling a different price amount. Ultimately would go back. It's a nice place to go before or after a movie.

The sushi is certainly not the most delicious in Baltimore, but it's pretty tasty and it comes fresh and immediately. As the name implies, you sit around a conveyor belt of endless sushi and choose what you want as it passes--it's pretty awesome. They will take orders as well and are very accommodating. Unfortunately, the chairs are pretty uncomfortable and crammed very close together, so it's not exactly somewhere you'd want to spend a long evening.

This isn't the best sushi I've ever had and, as others have mentioned, some of the rolls can seem a bit skimpy. However, you can get a plate for as low as $3!!! And being able to pick out whatever I want as it comes around is far too much fun to miss. I loved the novelty of the rotating sushi and the prices. Both rolls I tried were decent for the price and everything seems fresh. They also have a menu that you can order from, but I didn't opt to do so. Overall, I'd recommend it just based on the novelty factor and the price alone!

Service and flavor win again! We were taken care of by Chrissy. She was amazing!!! The rolls were really good. Then the sauce that came with the shrimp tempura was sooo delicious! Then they orangish sauce which Chrissy called "Japanese cheese" was off the chain. It's not hot at all as the bottle suggests. 2.50 for fountain soda . But the rotating sushi barade it fun and enjoyable. Then we capped it all of with a lesson on the beloved kissing fish. I won't give it away you have to go see for yourself

Stopped in the other day to try it out. The staff and owner are very friendly. Prices are similar to other sushi restaurants but the size of the rolls is about 25% small in my opinion. If you never tried rotating sushi it's a neat novelty. One thing that I didn't care for was the wasabi in the jars was old and drying out. I demand freshness through my dining experience. The fish was fresh as expected. They do have tables available and a full menu. Excellent aquarium in the front. A lot of students and young people which as an adult why I AVOID Towson like the plague. Though this is winter break so there we less in the area. Sorry Towson, your on your own. Plenty of free validated parking in the garage. A lot of commotion, lots of movement so it's not a very intimate setting but for a bite to eat it works.

I love this place! I wouldn't say that it has the best sushi. It's pretty average when it comes to that sushi, but the environment and reliability is wonderful. I started going here over 7 years ago while I was in college. I've since moved out of state, but have come back to Kyodai a few times while visiting. Even though so many years have passed, the service and experience has not declined. I enjoy the rotating sushi bar. It is a unique experience that I haven't found elsewhere. The staff are so responsive and helpful. I had a phone call and was trying to rehang my purse on the hook below the bar, but was having difficulty. Before I knew it a waitress was there assisting me. Typically my bill is inexpensive. I picked a few more expensive plates this time, but still compared to a lot of sushi restaurants the prices are good.

I think it's only fair that I share I have frequented this establishment for at least the past 7 years. At this point, being objective is difficult as one of Kyodai's greatest strengths is its service, specifically it's owner "Tony." Tony typically greats most of his guests with a welcoming handshake and directs them to their seat at the rotating sushi bar. His personalty translates to colorful conversation and sometimes a free drink. This is a summation of my experiences, good and bad, from those hundreds of visits. Things I Like: - Menu - They have everything. EVERYTHING. If it isn't rotating around you, you can grab a menu and find it for the sushi chef to make extra fresh. Aaaaaaaaand they always expend their menu, introducing more hot dishes that overlap Asian menus for the most popular warm options. They have even expanded into desserts with classics like fried green tea ice-cream and fried Oreo's. - Alcohol - They have a variety of domestic and Asian beers. They also have Saki and soda. Have you ever had a bottle of Asian soda? YOU HAVE TO ORDER ONE. It has a glass marble on the top of the bottle, and you have to push the marble into the neck of the bottle to break the seal. Fresh fizziness greats you after completing the awkward and complicated task. I was like, "Whuuuuut?" - Service - They're on you like white on rice! Had to. The staff is super attentive and eager to please. The owner sets the standard and all others follow closely. Things I Don't Like: - Decor - For those that have been in the Towson area long enough, this location used to be a Pizzeria Uno's. And it's pretty much the same place with the exception of a large rotating sushi bar slammed into the middle of it. It's mostly red brink interior with tile flooring. Cold and uninviting. They have a few large TV's, but the place is too large for all guests to really enjoy them. I don;t recall there being a presence of background music or volume from the TV's. - Parking - Like most places in Towson, it's complicated. Depending on the time of day you, will pay a few dollars or use their attached parking garage with restaurant stamped discounting. It's manageable, but there is no dedicated parking lot. The strength of Kyodai is the food. If you like unlimited sushi options, you'll be rolling in glory. If you want decor, this will be a disappointment. The scene is pretty lively on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights and the crowd is an eclectic collection of locales and college kids. When the place is packed there is a low roar, and you must be comfortable with sharing your conversations with strangers. You're sitting on top of one another. Just like any other bar. They would need to revisit and invest in the decor to soften the place up for me for their rating to improve. Ultimately the pricing and options are strong, and the energy of the place on a busy night is exciting and enjoyable. Give "Tony" a visit!

I absolutely love this place! I have been going here since college and it never disappoints. The owners are always there and they always give their 100% service. They always smile and greet you and get you seated immediately! The sushi is amazing. I love that I can get what I want from the rotating bar OR I can order anything else I want right from the chef in the middle of the bar. So quick and so so so delicous. I wish they had more wine options, but the awesome sushi makes up for the small wine list. The price is also very reasonable! Can't wait to go there again soon!

First time rotating sushi! I like this place, they do 1/2 rolls so you can try several things. Nothing is labeled so you have to guess or ask what rolls are that are rolling by, but there were several people around to identify them for me. Everything was great and fresh, if you don't find what you want on the bar they will make it for you. Was a fun and different experience. Will definitely come again!

Went here with the boyfriend and the sushi was so fresh, not to mention fresh thick and juicy salmon. Highly recommended to people that love some fresh cut salmon. Best sushi so far I had. Been coming back here at least 2-3 times a week.

Best sushi I have had in Towson. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the sushi was pretty good. Not that must selection though, but the sushi that was in rotating was good. The prices are reasonable and service was good. I would recommend this place for sushi in Towson.

I have eaten here a number of times. The quality of the sushi has always been solid, not world changing, but consistently good. The selection varies from night to night, but my husband is allergic to hard shelled seafood and avocado and he was able to find enough options that he could eat to be happy. This is a fun place to go get sushi and at a reasonable price. I will say that this is a small restaurant. During busy hours it is not the best place to go with a large group.

I LOVE kyodai! I was living in Towson for a while during an internship, and Kyodai is where I have some of my fondest memories of enjoying my time with friends. It's a very inviting and cozy sushi bar, and at least on slow days, the staff is super attentive. I never had an empty mug of tea, there was always someone to refill it. The only critique I might have is that the sushi is so-so. It's not bad at all, but it isn't stellar. All in all, Kyodai is the place to go if you want to enjoy yourself with friends, and have nice sushi for a nice price, but don't expect to have the meal of your life.

After 2 visits, I thought the place is pretty good. I found the staff friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Find from the items currently on belt or ask them to make a dish or to get a dish. Nice concept with the food on a conveyor tracks -- going around and around lol. It's better than the glass case with the desserts spinning. Be careful as the plates add up quickly -- each plate is color coded for pricing. I must've been hungry, because the bill was $40 with just me. The selections seem pretty typical. I hope to try the noodles on next visit.

Went to this restaurant last night, food was great and definitely worth trying. The owner was out in the restaurant greeting customers. He even made a dish for me free of charge. Great personality and excellent service. Recommended.

I went here Saturday night with my boyfriend. It was ok, not the best sushi bar I've had but decent. I felt like there wasn't enough variety of sushi choices. I also wish they would have label the sushi so I know what I was grabbing. My bf ordered some udon noodles, and they were decent. I think there are better places around the area for sushi. My drink stayed filled so that was a plus.

I like this place...it is a nice for a change. It is a fun lively atmosphere - albeit a little tight at the counter, still just an enjoyable experience. I stacked up piles of plates...I like to try new things, so when something tasty looking cruses by, just pick it up. Was everything successful...no - but for the things I knew and always order - I thought was good. My fish was very fresh and tasty - the waitress, chef and the host were great! As some have said - probably not the best place for large groups and extravagant rolls, which suit me fine, I prefer Nigiri and sashimi - and I was very satisfied. Not the best sushi I ever had - but it was very good, the place was fun and different - I can't wait to go back!

I can't eat shellfish so I don't usually eat from the rotating bar but the sushi we ordered was pretty good. About half of the rotating dishes were really foggy but the ones I could see looked yummy.

Fantastic atmosphere and sushi, just wish the selection were a bit more interesting on the rotation. They always seem to end up with a bunch of shrimp creations circling untouched - shrimp, bleh.

Meh.

  • Leila F.

  • Den F.
