This restaurant is such a pleasant surprise especially given the strip mall location (next to Kosher Mart!) You would never imagine such fine service to be found in some suburban neighborhood strip mall. I loved the ambience of this place and the servers- it reminded me of a few places I visited in Argentina- old school European vibes with older, seasoned male Portuguese servers. I liked the house cabernet sauvignon I ordered but did not care for the Portuguese red. The calamari I could have done without- it's actually a lot more affordable than many of the more hip, casual restaurants we go to but I didn't really care for their dipping sauce. The Steak Portuguese was excellent albeit it came off a little like gourmet salisbury steak due to the "steak in gravy" aspect. It was well cooked, very tender, and the sauce was very flavorful and rich. I was pleasantly surprised at how good my Veal Nova Europa was. It was delicate yet far from bland. I don't eat a lot of veal and don't care for it all too much but this was fantastic and really showcased veal for what it is. The server sent us off with amaretto shots "For the road" which was much appreciated. SO European. More restaurants need to do this (c'mon straight edge montgomery county!) No, this is not the fanciest, more dazzling restaurant you will go to, but I loved this place nevertheless. It's paradoxically unpretentious while being "old school formal" at the same time. The food is what it is- it's not fusion, it's not plated in some obnoxious fufu way, it's not someone's culinary school thesis. Reasonable prices, good food, good people, what's not to like??

This place is outstanding with wonderful food and excellent customer service. The place seems to have an older crowd but that is just fine with me. When I was there, I was the youngest person there by at least 15-20 years but that doesn't mean that the food is bland or bad. The food is exceptional. I loved the house salad and the shrimp entree I had. My wife had a shrimp and crab entree in which she still raves about. We haven't had the chance to go back there yet but it would be safe to say that we will be there as soon as we can. The bar is stocked with numerous spirits. Soda, beer and wine are offered as well. The decor is a little dated but over all the dining room has a warm and pleasant feel to it. If you like good service, a place where you can take your time and dine, then give this place a try. Thank you for reading my review. This review is based off of my personal experience and opinion.

Best hidden gem in Silver Spring. Far exceeded our expectations. Wonderful service and delicious food. Generous portions and fabulous house wine.

Started off with the escargo and calamari. Both dishes were decent, what you would expect from them. Definitely the best things we ordered though. My mother ordered the seafood nova europa, my father got the Steak a Portuguesa, and I got chops off the specials menu. We all tried a bit of each other's dishes. The seafood nova europa is the only item I would consider ordering again, and it was average at best. the steak a portugesa was so salty that even I couldn't eat it, let alone my father... (keep in mind that I have high blood pressure bc I LOVE salty foods). As for my chops, the sauce was okay but the meat and breading was so mushy... Boooo The lighting is dark here, and it's kind of classy. So might be good for a date? However, the restaurant just consisted of all senior citizens... Staff was very friendly.

Very solid, all the way around....bread was great, salad was very fresh, entrees were cooked right and served hot, and the deserts were fantastic. The "pastel de nata" is a must for desert. A+ service. A modest wine list but its priced very well and it had a few of the California wines I enjoy. Definitely going back.

I love this place. It's a restaurant I go to almost every time I visit my family in Maryland. The start of the meal always begins with fresh, piping hot bread. As a starter, be sure to get the house salad (full of fresh vegetables and a delicious house dressing on the side) or the French onion soup. For entrees, you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but my personal favorite is the scallops. To finish, I like to order the cheesecake with coffee. It's a delicious end to a wonderful meal. There's a great dinner special the restaurant has during the week that includes soup or salad, entree, coffee and dessert, that's not to be missed. This place serves delicious food and won't break the budget. The atmosphere is relaxed and not pretentious. Most people who go (like my family), you can tell, are regulars. Be sure and give it a try if you're in the area.

Wow! Wonderful food. Got the rack of lamb and it wasn't on the menu, per the waiter's recommendation. It was amazing. My wife got the veal parmesan and absolutely loved it. Definitely stop in. It looks closed from outside, they are open.

Being of Portuguese heritage, I'm always looking for a good Portuguese restaurant in the DC area. Nova Europa fits that bill. They do, however, prepare their food for an American audience. It isn't the most authentic Portuguese food out there but the closest you'll get in MoCo. I have been coming here since I was a child -- 16 or 17 years at least. Whenever I go, my party gets the following: Chourico, Caldo Verde, and Bifa a Portuguesa (essentially Bitoque without the ham). It is delicious. Always. Conclusion: Nova Europa makes me miss Portugal. And that's a good thing.

Live so close to this restaurant that we kind of "forget" it's there. But had lunch there with husband today and it's so nice and quiet, the service was excellent, the food good, and there is a luncheon special (salad or soup, entree, coffee or tea, ice cream) for $13.

This restaurant doesn't seem like it has changed in a long time, but that's not a bad thing! The meals are very good and with the early bird specials, very affordable too. It has a romantic, old world ambiance you would not expect from a restaurant in a strip mall. I'll be back!

I've lived near this restaurant for many years and patronized the shopping center for many years longer. Last month,we finally decided to go in and see what it was about. From the outside, you're just not sure what to expect. Upon entering, we were quite surprised. Very nice interior. Definitely has an old european look to it. Ordered a pair of caesar salads. The dressing was good but the lettuce was just a bit too wet from washing. The salmon was quite good. The filet mignon was excellent. The wait staff was excellent and attentive. Would recommend to anyone for a nice evening out.

sorta hole in the wall. heard it thru friend and went since i was told they liked it sooo much. they are italian and the deal on lunch was great they said. such as coffee + meal + dessert all under $? i forgot it was good deal - that is all you need to know anyow soon as i walked in i was somewhat skeptical it was dark and even darker rug and saw many old people not saying anything bad but i was not sure if they place had good food... just judging from the patron and the ambience the server was great. friendly and overall one of the best i have seen the food came ok portion. did not expect alot anyhow. the first byte (i forgot what i ordered) it was good very good so i ended up finishing to the plate and the dessert was ok (ice cream) i do definitely recommend this place to folks.

Cozy and charming! I was initially leery of going to this restaurant due to the lack of reviews despite living very close to its location. However my family and I decided to be daring and try it out. I am SO GLAD WE DID. I realy enjoyed it and and will go back again. This place is definitely for the nostalgic and lovers of mid-century modern. The decor is definitely dated - but in a nice, cozy way. The wood paneling and appropriately dimmer lighting make you feel like yesteryear. I went with my parents who said it reminded them a lot of Europe 30+ years ago. In fact the waiter informed us that the restaurant would be celebrating its 30th anniversary this spring. The menu is European - there is no yuzu or umami here! It featured an early bird menu that seems very popular. The restaurant itself had plenty of diners when we arrived at 7PM - but not so many that the staff couldn't find a table right away for our group of 5. The menu selection leans towards seafood and veal with some Italian pasta dishes and chicken as well. My father greatly enjoyed his sardines - the large kind you see in Portugal he said, not the small ones you get in a tin. While we did not try the soups, they had a Portguese potato and sausage one as well as French onion and a soup du jour. Their daily specials were also interesting and varied. The seafood menu featured different shrimp dishes and a frutos de mar. I was intrigued by the Caldeirada Nova Europa with clams, mussels, shrimps, scallops and calamari in a ceramic pot. In the end we all had different veal dishes since veal is hard to find these days in most restaurants. It was delicious - tender and cooked just right! The wine - I forgot to mention the wine selection. They had some lovely Portuguese red and white wines - vinho verdes and the like. Some of the domestic US wines offered were okay and they featured some French (bordeaux, Cote du Rhone etc) and Italian (Pinot Grigio and some reds) imports. The prices were decent and I would stick with the Portuguese wines myself- so crisp and delicious. We had great service and it was obvious this is a family business. I will go back to this restaurant again and am delighted that it's in my new neighborhood!
