I'm officially a Cuban food fan thanks to Cubano's! I've been on a bit of a new food rampage since discovering just how food bored I am and a friend of mine brought me here on my birthday a couple of days ago. I had the mango mojito and HAD to have another it was so yummy! I even tried his guava mojito and it was just as tasty. We enjoyed one of the for two specials -- pardon my forgetting the name -- that produced a sizzling pan overflowing with grilled meats and veggies perfectly seasoned and that's aroma was most intoxicating. Rice, black beans and plaintains accompanied and I was in my little carnivorous heaven. I definitely MUST go back and try more things on the menu.

I love this place, especially during the summer. Yes, service is kind of slow, but then we complain when we're rushed out of a restaurant on nights we'd like to take our time. Again, totally a summer restaurant. The menu is fairly meat heavy, but seriously - does anyone really go to a cuban restaurant expecting otherwise? Regardless, I didn't have a hard time working around my dietary restrictions. My only complaint is that the drinks are a little on the pricey side, for the type of restaurant it is. They tend to be a little weak also, ordering wine/beer may be a safer bet.

This is a review for lunch only. I have no complaints about Cubano's. My favorite by far is the traditional Cubano's sandwich - meaty, pickley, and cheesy goodness. Service has been consistently speedy and courteous. Highly recommended.

Okay, let me start this by saying it is snowing outside and yet I still ventured out of my warm crib to eat! Well I don't turn down a meal when someone is treating! So here I am at getting ready to get my Cuban on with an Ecuadorian! I love Cuban food! This place is pretty chill. Surprisingly, there is a nice little crowd in here despite the weather. I'm in the mood for some pollo al limon and it will be destroyed! This dish is great! So full of flavor and spice! Get it If u love chicken. The tapas for one is also a good choice. I will be back here for sure minus the sand at the beach! :) Hopefully, the next time there will be some fly cuban ladies to greet me like a prince! :)

I've been to Cubano's 4 times in the last few months. AWESOME food! My favorite dish (have had it 3 times) is the pan-fried beef. Amazing. A little cup of black beans is served with almost all the dishes - such a simple food, but so fantastic with the rice. The only thing is that I've been to Cubano's twice for lunch and twice for dinner - I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like the dinner portions are the same size as the lunch but costs 75% more. So if you're choosing between lunch and dinner, you might try lunch. Either way, I highly recommend it!

Been to Cubano's 3 times now. Two out of the three times it was excellent...one being last night. The Bandeja Cubano's (sample platter appetizer) is awesome with a lot of variety. Yuka, chicharrones, pork, empanada and a few other unidentifyable foods(!!) on it were all excellent. The Chicken Fricase was very good, but the Salteado de Pollo (chicken with red and green peppers) was excellent. The plantains and rice that come with the dinner are delish as well. Everyone loved their meal (pork chop dish & shrimp dish), though it is a heavy meal, so go there hungry! Fried plantains were very good too. One time we ordered a side of them, which we really didn't need because both dishes came with them, so check with the waiter if your dish includes them (unless of course, you want a lot of fried plantains, then you should order a side of them!) Nice atmosphere, service is good. Prices are a little higher than average (average around $19 per dish), but worth it. Parking garage right near by and this restaurant is a little bit off the beaten path so parking is not a problem.

I'm in a great mood tonight because I got some awesome records at Joe's Record Paradise and then we went to Cubano's and had an amazing meal of Sangria and Paella. Usually, when we get Paella, there is a lot of rice and not so much meat/seafood. Not so at Cubano's! Our Paella had tons of meat and seafood and was so friggin delicious! I'm such a fatass but damn, their food was great!

Been here twice, and the food is pretty good. Most recently I had a cuban sandwich which was awesome. They make really good Mojitos too. My only complaint is that it's a little too pricey in my opinion. I only went back because I had a Scoutmob deal. Lunch is a little cheaper, so maybe I'll just stick to that and not dinner.

Eh, it's ok... This is my friend's favorite restaurant, so I've ended up here numberous times. At this point I try to eat before I go and just hang out for the company, because I just have no desire to spend SO much on food that's only ok. 2 dishes are great - the Vaca Frita Cubano's (basically fried steak with onions) and the Tres Leches cake for dessert. And the hot garlic bread they bring at the beginning is nice. But other than that... I have been consistently disappointed with my orders. Everything always looks so awesome on the menu and then just doesn't live up to it when I get my food. Everything is *very* pricey, and it's just not worth it. The atmosphere is nice, bright, and our server this most recent time was very friendly, though the service is definitely quite slow. Go if you want an evening to relax and enjoy the company over a meal - except I'm sure there are places with better food for less money that you could do that.

Vaca frita is probably the best tasting dish there is in Silver Spring. At $15+ per plate, it's a little pricey for the kind of food you get, but definitely a nice setting and one of the restaurants in Silver Spring that I'm always proud to take visitors to. Their drinks are a little rough, wasn't very impressed by their Sangria or their mojitos

if you want good cuban food or just good food, Cubano's is the place to go. My partner and I travel out of DC up to Silver Spring just to eat here. Great, friendly staff, quick service, and again, wonderful tasty cuban food. A+

I can't recommend this restaurant. Both the food and service are really spotty. On my last visit, our food was really slow arriving and the waitstaff kept saying "soon". We saw a man in cook's clothes come into the dining room with a plate and sit down to eat. Yes, it was the chef. The wait staff said we'd have to wait for him to finish before he would prepare our food. We called the manager over, who acted like this was a perfectly reasonable thing to ask of us. We left and won't go back.

Great Restaurant. I am not an easy diner and this place was great. Get the owner to make you a Mojito. He doesn't crush the mint as much so you can taste the rum. Had the calamari appetizer. Pretty good but not great. Nicely crispy but not overly battered. I had the steamed snapper. Excellent flavors. My wife got the combination chicken, beef, pork dinner. All was excellent. Good sized portions. There was lots of garlic in most everything. Good for me but if you do not like garlic you should tell them ahead of time. Tres Leches cake and Cafe Cubano were also great. Service was excellent too. It's a keeper as far as I can tell. Pricey but very competitive for the quality of the food you get. Enjoy.

I'm Cuban form Miami and I can tell you that this place is great regardless of what the other dummies post about this place. Try the sampler that includes black beans/rice, masitas de puerco and fricase de pollo with sweet platains. The appetizer combo is awesome with a little bit of everything and big enough for 3 people.. The appetizers are pretty much the same as eating from the Cafeterias in Hialeah/Miami

Cubanos is LEGIT! First, the mojitos are a 10/10. Never have I had a mojito this delicious and it is because of the quality mint, sugar, lime, and rum. I'm a huge fan of chewing on the sugar cane stick too. Happy hour the Mojitos are smaller but $3.75 (or $4). Their empanadas are mediocre and authentic (I guess) but after having Julia's Empanadas in DC, nothing compares. I had Paella there for the first time and it was great. They sell it on menu as Paella for 2 but it is MORE than enough for 3 people and would make a nice appetizer if you wanted it for 4. I would definitely recommend Cubanos.

Ambiance can be small and noisy. The food is overpriced. This places may be better in the summer when you can eat outside. Mi Tierra, the dish I had, arrived to the table NOT hot and barely above room temperature. My date had Snapper Tropicana which was tasty. I don't have any particular plans to go back.

Fantastic place to get some delicious eats and strong mojitos! I was delighted to try this place for dinner last weekend with a few friends. We started with the 2 for 1 mojito special for mentioning yelp. We tried the mango, guava and traditional; all of them were refreshingly tasty and strong! There are lots of interesting options on the menu to choose from especially if you enjoy meat. We tried several things, starting with the Picadera which was exceptional and great pared with the bread. For the entree I tried the Snapper Tropicana which was truly decadent! The snapper was heavily breaded and covered in a scallop cream sauce with grilled shrimp, which to be honest was a little too intense for me. It also came with steamed vegetables, plantains and saffron rice. I would probably order something lighter next time. My friends ordered chicken and beef entrees and they seemed to be very pleased. I think this place has some delicious food but really caters to meat eaters. The staff is very friendly and the service is excellent! It is on the pricy side but definitely a nice change of pace from the usual chain restaurants in the area!

I came here for lunch and absolutely loved it. Now, I'm not a cuban food connoisseur, but I like good food and Cubano's definitely delivered. I got the lechon asado and I'll be back for some ropa vieja. They give you some great portions for the price.

Worst Cuban food ever! Went there upon recommendation of a friend. We got the assorted meats platter for 2. Thank goodness we had a Restaurant.com coupon. I will be trading in my additional coupon. I can't bear to go back.

We went to Cubano's on a Saturday afternoon and didn't have to wait for a table. The restaurant is very attractively furnished plus there is outdoor seating which is very nice. I ordered the Mi Tierra (Combo Sampler) which has Ropa Vieja, Lechón Asado, Fricasé de Pollo, Moros y Cristianos, and sweet plaintains. Every part of the dish was excellent and cooked to perfection. I would definitely recommend this restuarant to people already liking Cuban food or to people who want to try a new cuisine.

Not too impressed - came in got seated instantly - very attentive in getting us in and out ..prob because They were about to close.... Saw our waiter... A very old guy.....first time to order drinks and apps...second to order dinner and 3rd to get the check......food was good but didn't WOW me and nothing memorable was tasted tonight - the signature mojitos were not good to me, I believed they used house rum (maybe port royal or something ) which to me a signature/famous cocktail should have better quality liquor, regardless of the cost .....I would go back just to give it a second chance

I had my first visit to Cubano's last night and it will most likely be my last. Sadly, this has a lot more to do with the service than the food. Someone from our group called a few days ahead to make a reservation and asked whether we could be offered any specials; the woman on the phone stated that she would be happy to offer us the three-course prix fixe menu that they usually only offer on Tues and Wed (we were coming on a Thurs). Once we arrived and asked about the prix fixe menu, the host stated that he had no notes in the reservation and they only offer that special on slow nights. When we insisted that the person on the phone promised us that special, he was a little whiny but did bring the menu. He stated that it would cost him $10 per person out of his pocket if we were wrong about this. We had previously ordered some teas and coffees, which are supposed to be included in the prix fixe menu, but he told us that the system is computerized and he had to leave the charges on our bill. This sounded like complete bull to us. He then complained again about how this was not a prix fixe night. We finally told him to forget about the prix fixe and he took the menus back from us. He did offer to pay for dinner for the person who had made the reservation, but we declined; his complaints were just over the top and we didn't want him to feel justified or vindicated in any way. We were seriously considering leaving at this point and going across the street to Mi Rancho, but we had some people joining us later and did not want to have to go through the pain of calling them to redirect them. We were served garlic bread at the start of the meal, which was really nothing special. Soft, bland italian-style bread that didn't really taste very garlicky or buttery. Many of us ordered the camarones al ajillo, which I really did enjoy. The shrimp were maybe a little more cooked than I prefer, but they were fine. The sauce was buttery and garlicky, but also had a nice citrus note. The saffron rice and the black beans it came with was fine. The sweet plantains were fine. One person in the party ordered an appetizer portion of empanadas for her meal; the host (who took our orders) asked to make sure she wanted the appetizer, and she said yes. It's hard to describe, but he sounded a little snarky when he asked her this. Then he confirmed his general douchiness when he served her the dish, once again repeating that he was serving her the "appetizer" empanadas. I'm not sure why he had a problem with her ordering an appetizer for the dinner, as we all ordered dessert and a couple of us had alcohol. We spent about $35 per person (including tax and tip), so it's not like we were cheaping out. I had the tres leches for dessert. The cake part was nice and creamy, but the whipped cream topping was slightly rubbery. It was probably a little past its prime. I had a bite of someone's flan and that was really good, thick and rich and creamy. We had a group of seven, so we had an 18% gratuity tacked on the bill. I would have probably made it 15% if it had been my discretion. Once we paid the bill, the host made sure to grab the signed credit card slip soon after I signed it, long before we left the table, which I thought was kind of rude. It was like he knew that we were not happy and he wanted to make sure he didn't get stiffed. When we left, the host was standing at the entrance, but we didn't say anything to him, and he didn't say anything to us. While the food was pretty good (but nothing to write home about), not even the most delicious meal could have erased the terrible memories of the service here.

I went here with my girlfriend last night for dinner and we absolutely loved it. It wasn't our first time having cuban food but it was by far the best. We started with Tostones Dazon Estilo Marcos- these were so delicious. We got both beef and chicken, both were yummy but I preferred the beef. It was my first time having tostones and I loved it. For our main course we shared Pollo a Limon (chicken sauteed in lemon butter shallots and white wine). The lemon butter was the best I've had in the area and the chicken was perfectly cooked. Boliche Asado Estilo Eloisa (beef in it's own gravy with carrots and some other stuff). The beef was very tender and juicy and the gravy was thick and gooey and the flavors were amazing. Each dish came with 2 pieces of sweet plantains which were sweet and perfectly fried like my mum does it. Our waiter was so funny and friendly and he didn't shy away from telling us what he thought we may or may not enjoy. He recommended a Spanish beer which I much admit went really well with the meal. The service was excellent, the servers who attended to us were very prompt and thoughtful and we never had a cluttered table or spent a long moment waiting for service. The atmosphere was very relaxing and cozy, even though our table seemed a bit small and my elbow hit the wall every now I then it didn't take away from the overall experience. After reading the previous reviews I was very skeptical about going to Cubano's. Idk maybe we caught them on a very good day who knows but this was hands down one of the most satisfiying dinners I've had since I moved to the area. We do plan on returning to try some other dishes and maybe some mojitos. Price wise it may be a bit pricey for some people but I thought it was well worth it for what we got. We spent almost 3 times our Cubano's bill at Oya and the quality of the food we got at Oya was sadly disappointing. The quality of the food here far surpassed everything we had at Oya. I don't believe that good food has to be expensive but I think these prices were very reasonable.

I've eaten here 4 or 5 times over the last few years. Today was by far the worst. The vegetarian options are limited. I ordered what I thought was an entree salad - due to the fact that it was $11 and CALLED AN ENTREE SALAD. I would have done better with a chik-fil-A side salad. There was nothing to it, and it was a huge waste of money; hardly a sufficient meal. I would have complained or at least ordered more food but our waiter never returned until it was time to bring the check. Not only have portions gotten smaller over time but service was particularly awful. Avoid this place, especially lunch time on the weekend when they serve only the dinner menu at dinner prices but lunch time portions.

I visited this place with my wife, my father and a friend. My wife LOVES Cuban food. My father and friend were trying it for the first time. All four of us had a great time! Great food. Great service! Cancel your plans for that tied old place you were going tonight and go here instead.

I went here for the first time today for lunch with some friends and it was a mediocre experience. The restaurant is in a pretty good location just off of Georgia Ave in Downtown SS and it's nicely decorated inside but that's pretty much where the good things ended for me. Here's some things that didn't go so well: * Looking at the menu, it said "Dinner" at the top of every page but it was the only menu they had. Therefore the prices were all pretty hefty being $15-$20 per entree. However, when we got the bill, the prices were a lot cheaper and at lunch menu prices I'm guessing. Would've been nice to know that while ordering since we could've ordered without keeping cost in mind. * We ordered an appetizer of beef empanadas but then all of a sudden, all of our entrees came out instead. So we just cancelled the empanadas and the look on their face was as if we never even ordered them. * The initial wait for the drink order was waaaaaay too long. Perhaps 15 minutes and the restaurant was pretty empty. * The fancier entrees of lechon and fried pork morsels were mediocre at best. Plus side besides location and decor was the Cubano sandwich. It was very good with thinly sliced pork. Pretty good compared to others that I've had. However that's not enough to bring me back.

Food was very good, service sucked. Mentioned mojito special from yelp before the end of dinner and waiter said we had to mention it right when we ordered or no deal..... Pretty crappy since it doesn't say that anywhere. I won't be going back.

Dang, the happy hour mohitos, Chorizo Asado, Gambas al Ajillo, Mini-Cuban Sandwiches are a great after-work treat. Get off the Silver Spring metro and wonder up here by 6 for happy hour and you'll be hooked. Two of us split the above mentioned offerings, followed by the Mi Tierra (Combo Sampler) from the dinner menu and were deliciously stuffed. My only small complaint is the prices-- the food is great, but a bit overpriced.

We went here to celebrate our last "dating" anniversary before our wedding next year. We also had a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant.com We were surprised by the vibrantly painted walls and the paintings that made us long for tropical beaches. It wasn't too busy for 6 pm on a Saturday night. Of course we ordered two mojitos to go with our yuca appetizer. Yuca? Yumma! Whatever the dipping sauce was that accompanied our food was excellent. We then moved on to share the paella which was labeled for two. Three people at least could have shared it. The scallops I found in there were amongst the best I've ever had. Even with no room left, we had to order dessert. The rum cake was moist and delicious and a great way to end the meal. It was an excellent and relaxing dinner. I can't wait to go back and try the million other entrees on the menu that looked good.

Three words: Vacha Frita. Mojitos. My brother introduced me to this place about five years ago, and it instantly became a favorite. You never have to wait for a table, there's outdoor seating, live music on occasion and the food is consistently delicious. Have never understood why the Mexican spot across the street seems to do a brisker business; Cubanos to me is much more authentic and flavorful. Great spot for a large party (8+) and little kids: we brought our one-year old with us recently and without asking, they prepared a small plate of rice, black beans and plantains for her. I will be in complete dispair if they're ever chased out by some vanilla chain...

Love this place! Very lowkey reminds me of a restaurant I went to in Puerto Rico. The wait staff is so friendly, one waiter in particular remembers me every time I come which is awesome considering he usually gives me a little extra bread. I love the Milanesa and it's the best I've had in the states! Foods a little overpriced in my opinion though which is why I'm giving them a 4!

My fiance, who is Cuban, has been searching for a great Cuban restaurant in the area for over 10 years. We finally made it to Cubano's tonight, and while we both thought the food was flavorful and tasty, the service left a LOT to be desired. The pros: Again, the food was delicious. From the bread that arrived shortly after we sat down, to the beef empanadas that we split, to our individual meals -- picadillo for him, and the bistec empanizado for me -- we had no complaints at all about the food. In addition, we found the atmosphere and decor to be warm and inviting. The cons: The service was some of the worst I have had in a while. Unfortunately, we were served by someone who I'm assuming is either the owner or manager, rather than a regular server, and it was not a pleasant experience. He was incredibly heavy handed in asking us over and over again if we wanted various drinks before the meal, and again with the desserts after the meal; we had to keep telling him that we weren't interested. When we ordered soda, he forgot to bring them out; by the time the meal came out (and the appetizer came at the same time as the entrees, a personal pet peeve), we still didn't have our drinks, because he had not come back by our table. Then, when I handed him a $25 restaurant.com gift certificate, he accused me of photocopying it rather than paying for it. When I assured him that was not the case, he went out of his way to tell us that gratuity should be paid for the entire check, not just the discounted portion. I explained that I had worked in food service before, and I knew how to tip properly, but I was just completely appalled by his attitude regarding the gift certificate. And, as other people have said, the food is definitely over-priced for what you get. Our total bill came to $54 for two entrees and an appetizer. He also charged us for refills on our sodas; I don't know if that's the restaurant's normal policy, or if we got "special" treatment for using the gift certificate. Overall: We'd go back again, but most likely for lunch (which offers cheaper prices), and we'd probably do our best to avoid having that guy serve us again if at all possible, as he very nearly ruined the experience (and delicious food) for us.

This is NOT a hole-in-the-wall Cuban dive. That's what my friends i were told as we made our way there Saturday in our grubby pumpkin-picking clothes. So we were surprised to find a beautiful, white tablecloth restaurant with a full dinner menu and no Cuban sandwich in sight. (Actually it is on the lunch menu which the server happily brought us). Definitely a nice outing or special occasion place, with attentive, accomdating waitstaff . The Yucca was crispy, black bean soup velvety and rick. The Cuban beef soup came with chunk of beef, potatoes and a homely broth. The dipping slasa lacked fire, but everything else we had was rich and flavorful. Worth a trip for the Cuban coffee and Dulce de leche alone. Just leave the mud-covered sneakers at home.

Who would know that one can go to suburbia for good food? I have eaten at Cubanos many times and often crave one of their pork dishes... They have great mojitos and caipirinhas. There is a yummy appetizer platter and then - well, that is all I have ever had there - there are the pork dishes. Yum!!! They close early - 9 I think - which makes it a bit tricky making it there frequently

Finally made it to Cubanos, still feeling guilty not about not going to one of my favorite places across the street (Mi Rancho). Anyway the food was fine, a little overprice for what it is, and the services was slow as molasses. Maybe a little cuban music (outside) in the background would make a better ambiance and you wouln't notice that you even had to wait for 20 minutes even for the check.

  • Aaron E.

I was not impressed. The food was fine, but not for the price charged. The fried calamari was rather bland. The mojito did not refresh me. If this were a bargain place to eat, I would be ok with it. But at ~$20 a plate, the quality of the meal is a deal breaker.

Maybe it was because we were first timers, maybe it was the late time of day we were there (9:25pm), maybe it's because we weren't interested in alcohol. Cubano's was a big disappointment. We live so close by and have really wanted to enjoy our experience there, but it was simply impossible. The annoyed hostess walked us out to an outdoor table and slapped down two menus. No so and so will be out in a moment, no would you like something to drink. Just leaves. We quickly decide on what to order, a sample platter and a few apps. My husband stays at the table to wait for our waiter while I find my way inside to the ladies room. You have to walk through the WHOLE restaurant to find it. Anyhow, after 10 minutes I am back at our table and assume our order has been placed. Except there are no waters at our table. My husband confirms no one has come out. I stand pondering whether we should summon someone when through the window a waiter spots us and I see him move towards the door. Great, finally some service! No, he comes outside to clear off an empty table and collect the tab/tip left behind. Not a word. On his second round outside he finally looks over at us, sees our menus and otherwise bare table and asks if we've been helped. We reply no and he responds that someone should be out shortly. At this point we've been waiting 20 minutes, and are starting to eye Mi Rancho next door. A few minutes after that, he himself returns to take our order. They are out of one of the apps we wanted, whatever we'll just take something else. Please bring us some waters. I kid you not, 5 minutes later our food is on the table. Now, fast service is great.... but it's late and this seems a bit too fast at a sit down place. We realize we're eating the dregs of the day's cooking within the first few bites. SUPER salty and dry. No bread basket to combat the saltiness. We're starved. We eat. I give up and call it quits. My husband hates wasting food, he powers through it. No doggie bag for us please. After 10 minutes we pay our check and leave. I'm still queasy the following morning. Reading other reviews I can see where we went wrong, we should of ordered alcohol. That seems to make everything on the menu palatable.

If you want to get the yelp deal -- two for one mojitos -- make sure you tell them at the beginning of your meal. It doesn't say that on the offer, but they won't give it to you otherwise. The food was good, not great, and I went after reading about the tamal, which sounded delicious. Unfortunately, they didn't have it when I went. The service also left a bit to be desired. No one asked us how the meal was during the course of the dinner. They never asked us if we wanted another drink or if we needed more water. Nothing. And for the prices they charge, they should be boxing your leftovers for you.

This place was recommended to me by a friend - white table cloths and candles with good food - we believe good cuisine and ambiance feed the soul - food and service delivered and the decor with lovely Cuban paintings was on, but the linens and sparkle were sorely missed - bring back the table fabric and magic lights we associate with Cuban nights - Cubanos is a great discovery as a place to comfortably dine in place to eat in SS, a place over run by franchise good and mediocre folk cuisine! I love this place! The best dirty Mojitos around. I've spent hours trying to replicate them at home. The food is terrific and the place has a great energy. A great Cuban restaurant.

The Paella for two really should be for at least three--family style. The mojitos are delicious and the service is great. My only experiences have been sitting outside, so not sure of the indoor atmosphere, but this is a great authentic cuban place.

Just moved to silver spring and Decided to give cubano's a try. Now I have never had real Cuban food before, but everything that my two friends and myself tried was delicious - including the mojitos. The only downside is that it may be a tad over priced, but still worth a try.

Not the worst I've had but not the best. I was very disappointed when I ordered the sampler of apps at how quick it came from the kitchen (the food was sitting under a heat lamp waiting and it tasted like it). Ropa Viejo was pretty good. I might be a bit spoiled though b/c there is so much fantastic Cuban food up near NYC that I know what it is supposed to taste like.

My beautiful girlfriend and I ate here last night. We had the calamari for an appetizer. It was amazing! Definitely the best that I've ever had. She had some delicious guava berry juice as well. For out entrees, we both got the Mi Tierra combo Sampler. I've never had Cuban food before, but after this delicious meal, I would definitely have it again. Everything was great. We finished off with some Tres Leches cake that was amazing. The service was good as well. They were attentive and reasonable with the wait times for the food. I would definitely recommend dining here.

Went here for dinner this weekend, and I'm definitely a fan. Food was authentic and well prepared. My friend's grilled fish in cream sauce topped with shrimp looked delicious and I don't normally go for seafood dishes myself. I got the Ropa Vieja, which was a nice and tender & very tasty beef stew. It came with grilled plantains, which were delectable. I would have liked my stew to be a little bit more seasoned (maybe they went bland for American palates) and the service was NOT ultra slow and leisurely, maybe even the opposite, but these are little things. Would definitely go here again.

I agree with most people when they say it's a little overpriced for what it is. However if you can score one of the discounted $25 gift certicates from Restaurant.com the prices seem a little easier to deal with. The actual food is fairly good, although I wouldn't say there's a wow factor to it. Ambience is nice both inside and outside, although right now there's a large construction project going on right behind the restaurant. Service is a little slow, but I chalk that up to being part of the caribbean experience. Bottom line - it could be a little cheaper, a little tastier, and a little more attentive, but its worth a try if you have a coupon. Update: I recently made a return trip to Cubanos and have to say that while I still maintain that the prices are just a tad higher than they should be, the food is perhaps a little better than I had originally described. It really is quite tasty, and this time around the service was very attentive. I should also mention that the construction project is now essentially finished. But don't forget to look for the discounted gift certificate on Restaurant.com Second Update: Yes, another return visit and another good meal at Cubano's. I ordered the "Mi Tierra" this time, essentially a sampler of their 3 most popular dishes. This turned out to be a very good choice and also a lot of food. I would agree with my earlier comments about the food being a little expensive, but this particular dish is not a bad deal at all.

This place was great! The food was delicious, the service was a little slow, but I think the waiters were just bored because it was a slow night. The atmosphere was enjoyable and, oh yes, the food was delicious!!!!!

My husband, myself, and our 2 year old went to Cubano's for the first time and we are in LOVE. Being Cuban myself and growing up in the South Florida area, I have always known great Cuban food. It has taken me 7 years of living in this area to actually find a Cuban restaurant! We happened to go on Valentine's Day and they were offering a special menu. The menu included a beverage of either Sangria, Mimosa, or Champagne. I had the Sangria, which was good. For Appetizer you could choose ham croquetas or empanadas. My husband and I had each, but the croquetas were the best! They served them with a red sauce which really brought out the flavor. For our entrees, we each chose Mi TIerra, which is a sampling of their dishes. It included Ropa Vieja, saffron chicken, and pork. It was also served with black beans and rice and plantains. YUM. My son gobbled up the ropa vieja. Almost like my abuela makes, because nothing can beat that. For dessert, we each had flan. The flan was fantastic. Truly authentic. Service was great, despite other reviewers. They were fast and friendly. The decor is nothing special, but that's the way a good cuban restaurant should be.

I just visited Cubanos for the third time and must report mixed experiences. While I agree with other reviewers that the Mojitos were delicious, I found un-dissolved sugar at the bottom of my glass, which I do not particularly like. The food has been mixed with my visits, but the prices have always been above average. This last visit, the food was too salty; actually, I think it has always been too salty. I couldn't recommend any dish in particular, though I kept hoping for one to let folks know about. The 'ropa' was tough, though supposedly a specialty; the chicken was very average; the seafood medley thing over rice under the 'tapas' heading was very, every average. The wait staff was pretty much on it, the atmosphere was excellent, and the music and flamenco dancing on Wednesday night is a real treat. Perhaps go there for appetizers and enjoy a crunchy sugar mojito, but I think that there is better and more affordable food in the area. I will not be returning, though they deserve a 'good try' on a number of fronts.

For some of the best Cuban food in the DC area, you've got to come here. It's a bit pricey but worth it for a fancy, special-occasion dinner. The paella is amazing. So are the plantains. Mojito's are great. For dinner, try the tender roast pork. A bit salty but that's Cuban food for you. And be sure to save room for the tres leches cake! The decor is really nice too. A great choice for a first date or to celebrate an anniversary. Located within an easy, quick walk from the Silver Spring metro, or there's free parking on the weekends in the county public garage a few blocks down the street. I highly recommend this place!

A tasty place to dine with friends. I took a couple of friends to Cubanos and they could not stop complimenting the food, the service, and the mojitos. Of course, that could have been the mojitos talking. . . I would not call it a top-notch restaurant but more of a nice place to eat. Perfect for a leisurely casual dinner with friends and family.

You must try the Ropa Vieja if you choose to eat at this place. It is so delicious I get cravings for it. The restaurant itself is conveniently located within walking distance of the metro. It's decorated with vibrant, rich colors, which make you feel like you're in the Caribbeans away from dreary DC. The only downside is that it is pricey and perhaps best saved for special occasions or dates.

Hands down my favorite place to eat. When I moved to Silver Spring last year I was so happy that Cubano's was 2 block away so I could walk there. The service is always excellent. The food is savory, top notch and they don't skimp on the serving sizes. I have recently moved a little farther west so I will now have to driver here a few times a month instead of walking. Totally worth it!

food was not that good but I don't know what authentic Cuban food is so it may be really good authentic Cuban food. Cuban food just may not be my thing the popular dish was not NOT NOT good. The meat tastes like taco stuffing or like hamburger helper meat. It did have a lot of flavor but it just reminded me of taco stuffing meat. I did like the rice it came with cus the rice was slightly salty. people said the sampler is good but i honestly thought it wasn't that good. the chicken was really good but the rest was alright. The chicken was the best in the sampler.. Very tender :) and fell off the bone nicely The meat dish for two. I don't remember the name but it looked very good but my friends said it was a little too much meat without any distinct flavor. They said it tasted all similar and wished there were more bold flavors service was okay.. nothing was memorable. They did refill the water often. The women and men's restroom are located in different areas. there is a parking garage nearby (less than a min walk)

Best Cuban food in the DMV! The mojitos are great and the food is even better. So far I've had the Filete de Pescado a la Varadero and the Snapper Tropicana, both dishes were cooked to perfection.

I have no clue how they have bad reviews. Randomly stopped here before a concert because I've been craving papa rellenas. All I have to say is wow, I got the ropa vierja which was very tasty, the meat was tender and flavorful. We got their version of the papa rellenas made with yuca and it was fantastic. The mojito was also spot on, not too sweet, and delicious. I need to find reasons to come to silver spring more often from Virginia!

I was in the area and hungry for something different. Yelp led me to this place and boy was I pleased. I usually only get decent Cuban food when I'm in Miami, and while this place not be Versailles, it sure is close. Okay. Maybe they could put a little more butter on the bread. But hey, I'm from the south.

Came here for dinner meeting and enjoy the meal. The location I threw me off free parking in the public parking lot after six. The location is small the atmosphere is quite and romantic. This is probably the best kept secret in DTSS! Just over 200 reviews and a 3.5 star rating. I kid you not! I rushed to make a noon reservation and waited to receive my normal, "I'm running late text message" 10 minutes go by and I get a little concerned. I make a call to find out that lunch is at 1:15pm! Drink Please! The bar area is a slight disappointment. Not that much room for barstools but about 6 high tops. Lots of patio seats available and a rather large dining area. Nothing really special about the decor. It looked like something out of a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western. Huge white arched doorways accented with lime and cantaloupe walls . The place is spotless and the staff referred to the regulars by name! I ordered a Caipirinha and the bartender's eyes lit up! I guess everyone orders mojitos here. I heard that the drinks were potent here and that they are! He went traditional and added what seemed like 1/4 cup of sugar into the glass and sliced a fresh lime in half. He squeezed the juice of 1/2 of the lime into the glass an muddled the second half. He pour 2 ounces of Cachaca onto the glass and stirred it. Nobody does that anymore. He added ice and I began my downward spirlal! That sugar looked like an extremely large amount but the bitterness of the lime pith evened it out. Three drinks later she shows up! During my "down time" I scanned the menu and pretty much deceided on " Mi Terra" combo plate with Ropa Vieja, Lechón Asado, and Fricasé de Pollo. My favorite central/south American side dish Moros y Christianos was served with this! I just love the way the rice is simmered in the black beans. Scattered on the plate were a few thin slices of maduros and one small hunk of potato that was simmered in the same pot as the chicken. That potato absorbed every bit of flavor from that Fricasé. The chicken was a bit over cooked for my liking but full of flavor. The Ropa was the star of the plate. Simmered to perfection. Usually this dish tends to be a bit stringy but this was spot on! The Lechón Asado had a subtle bitter orange flavor but no fat. And slightly stringy. We ordered the Pork Masitas and they were prepared much better. Nice texture and crust and very juicy with in. This place is great! (Don't Blow Up My Spot)

The staff here are nice and the setting's nice. It gets crowded here sometimes on weekends, so you may expect a short wait. The food is ok, very over salted in our opinion. We didn't think it was anything special though we're also not experts on Cuban food. Most dishes have a lot of carbs (e.g., rice, beans).

The food here is really good - I don't think I've had something here that I didn't like. Black beans and rice, fried plantains, and um, mojito!! Also, for you veggies lovers out there (and really anyone) - the vegetable parillada is somehow amazing. The interior is nothing great, but definitely not bad. Also, the outside seating looks like it could be nice if the weather cooperates. They also participate on restaurant.com , but their vouchers sell out quickly!

I just don't get it. I have been wanting to try this place for some time and was excited to finally come by. We were very disappointed. We ordered the chicken empanadas for an appetizer and they were cold on the center. For entrees we ordered the sampler platter (with potato, shredded beef, shredded pork and plantains) and the cuban sandwich. Neither met up to expectations. The shredded meat was bland and tasted like it came from a mediocre bbq spot. The sandwich had cold ham and was topped with the same flavorless pork. Maybe we came on the wrong night? (It was a Friday) Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes? (We ordered off the chef specialties menu) The dishes are a bit pricey here and left a lot to be desired. Im just glad I ordered a mojito because that was the best thing on the table. It was strong and tasty! If I come back it will be to visit the bartender and not for a meal.

This place is a hit or a miss. The only thing consistently 5 stars here is the mojitos. The sangria gets a 4. The food can be pretty sad to decent, but never amazing. Do not get the parilla for two - it is doused in this musty, salty sauce and all the meat is cooked well-done. Calamari should be skipped too. I had what I think was a grilled NY steak Argentine style here and that was pretty ok, but it's not Argentina level amazing. The actual cuban fare is pretty average, I think I like Cuban Corner better.

I have not been pleasantly surprised by the greater DC food scene much (let's just say food in this part of the country is simply food cooked by someone else and people shouldn't expect to be wowed ever!). As I was saying, I was pleasantly surprised by This place. First of all, to use an office space and make it feel cozy and inviting isn't an easy feat for a restaurant. They pulled it off well! Second, authenticity! This place does not claim to be something it's not or tone down favors to attract people with bland palates. It is good Cuban food cooked the way you'd expect a grandparent to make it. Tasty, flavorful, good amount of grease and good portions. It's real Cuban food and the menu conveyed as much even before ordering. I tried their roast pork (succulent), their soup du jour (tasted just like mom's), their beef empanadas looked more like a mimosa but it was tasty. The shrimp I thought was cooked a bit too long but we're you getting this from Cuban grandparents they would have tasted the same, so once again authenticity. The coffee was to die for! Finally, the service was impeccable! The waiters came over to get the order and to refill the water. They checked on us and let us enjoy our dinner. It was the right amount of attention. The only thing taking a star from them is that their mojito isn't that great. Presentation and creativity (a piece of sugar cane in the drink is a nice touch) were great but it could have tasted better and I didn't need the Undissolved sugar at the bottom. If you know and or want to eat real homemade Cuban food (not Cuban alta cocina) it's a great place for that. I recommend it.

Originally came here for happy hour but we missed it by 10 minutes :( but we still got a few drinks - mojito and jack and coke. They were both pretty strong! Every table gets a side of garlic bread, which were amazing! I could eat those all night.

Cubano's is located just a few blocks from the Silver Spring metro, thus making it a very convenient meeting spot. Upon walking into the restaurant it was relatively dark, which made it difficult to see the menus (they turned the lights much brighter, later in the night, to what one would have in their kitchen). They brought bread to our table (a long roll that had been cut) that had been on what appeared to be a panini press then buttered. Nothing bad, just nothing to report. We ordered a mojito and sangria for drinks, and to my disappointment they brought the glass with canned fruit in it. From this I knew to play it safe when ordering appetizers and entrees. For our appetizers we had the chicken and beef empanadas. The chicken one had a bit more flavor than the beef one. The beef was just lightly seasoned ground beef. For entrees, we had the pork in orange marinade, the red snapper and the traditional Cuban staple ropa vieja or "old clothes" (think pulled beef). Surprisingly the pork was fairly dry with little flavor. The red snapper wasn't dry, but was extremely bland. The "old clothes" was the best choice of the three entrees, however that entree fell in line with the others in that it lacked much flavor. For the price of the entrees ($16-$25) I had higher hopes for this restaurant. Unfortunately, for the price of the food, they were not met.

I've been to Cubano's several times, and really enjoy the old world ambiance and friendly staff. I chuckled the first time I went there, at the hand-written sign near the entrance: "Best mojitos in town" (sounds like the joke from ELF). But sure enough, they are indeed fantastic and a great way to start a meal. I've only eaten a couple of their dishes, as I've fallen in love with the Mi Terra combination plate. I rarely have room for dessert, but loved their chocolate the one time I was able to indulge. I've never been to Cuba, but hope the experience and food are as good as Cubano's. Highly recommend.

I went here today for lunch with a coworker. I ordered the Boliche Asado Estilo Eloisa and it was soooooooooooo good. Boliche Asado Estilo Eloisa is a slowly roasted and tender eye-of-round, draped in a savory gravy of its own drippings, tomatoes, onions, carrots, and garlic. I will definitely be back to try other things on the menu along with the mojitos. They offer indoors and outside seating as well. It was very clean and the service was on point. All in all I would recommend this spot.

Of your into magnificently prepared Latin foods, look no further!!! This place is Heaven on earth when it comes to foodies!!! Do yourself a favor and indulge your taste buds in an eccentric delight upon delving into the food, as well as the drinks! #Cubano's has (along with the awesome food) some of the best drinks in the Washington DC area!!! A defiant diamond in the rough. Totally worth your time!!!

Great local happy hour spot tucked away off the beaten path. (I've only been for happy hour) Great Cuban drinks at a great price during happy hour(albeit a little too sweet and light on alcohol) 3.75 Mojito's and Cuba libre's are hard to mess up though. Happy hour food was authentic, full flavored and very delicious, as well as well priced. Service was just ok but I've only been twice. 4 stars.

Cuban food itself is not very exotic; lots of rice, beans, a protein, maybe some vegetables. But the atmosphere -- Grandpa invited us over for dinner that night, made some chicken dish sautéed with red and green peppers, onions, and some other vegetables. Fried plantains on the side. Black beans in a small side saucer. He welcomed us in, sat us down at the table, and entertained our needs. Strong coffee complimented the humbling meal. Aging walls unflinching, no attempts to even hide its decay. Intense atmosphere, loving staff. Classic dishes. Smell of cigars wafts up from the decks below. An ocean.

What a pleasant surprise--this place has a very humble exterior (especially during winter months when they pull in the front patio seating), but proved to be a very warm, friendly, and tasty dining experience. They continually run a Tuesday and Wednesday dinner special similar to DC's restaurant week 3-course options (thanks, Yelp), but you have to specifically ask for the special menu. It'll cut down your bill by 50%. Tostones are some of the best around, and the chicken soup (may or may not be on the menu) is another solid opening choice. Ropa Vieja was well-prepared, too. I'm steering clear of the "authentic vs Americanized" debate: it's good food, and I'll leave it up to you to decide whether it tastes like you remember it should. Drinks got progressively stronger, and I tend to think that was intentional. Not teh best in town, and I don;t see this as a happy hour spot (but they do run an early HH). No pisco on the menu, and that would be a nice addition. It was a slow night, so the Owner/Manager took our orders and ensured we enjoyed our meals. He and the rest of the staff were hospitable and quick on refills. Will def return if in the area again.

This was overall a very good choice. I sampled a few of the appetizers and liked the empanadas de pollo best. Second to that some thinly lengthwise cut and fried green plantains were tasty and delicate. The tostones on the other hand were less flavorful than I can make them. For main dish I had Mi Tierra which is sampler of pulled pork, pulled beef, and pulled chicken along with rice and black beans and deep fried sweet plantains. Excellent flavor and texture for everything but the pork, and abundant too. For dessert we shared the drunken cake and the bread pudding. Both were flavorful and innovative within their kind. They could have a better drinks menu and better choices for beer.

I have lived in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring area for my entire life, so I feel a bit silly saying I had never been to Cubano's until yesterday. I went with my mother and my husband for drinks and something light to snack on. We ended up having 2 mojitos each and dinner. I had the avocado salad and split a Cuban sandwich with my mother. Both were incredible and more than met my expectations. I meant to try some of my husband's garlic shrimp but he had inhaled it all while I was enjoying my own meal. We also split a flan at the end of the evening and it was delicious. Throughout the entire experience our server was incredibly kind, kept us entertained, and made sure we didn't want for anything. My mom took home another Cuban sandwich for my father to try and they threw in an extra flan for free. We are very likely to become regulars.

This place is amazing. Since the first time we went, I've been getting the pollo al limón. I was not expecting anything, but holy crap. It's so good. I also think I would enjoy a dip in a bathtub full of their rice and beans. If you're in a hurry, this isn't the place for you, though we've never been for lunch. It is really relaxed service and superb, consistently spot-on food, and a wonderful atmosphere. I hope cubano's is around forever, as I will never get tired of it. P.S. Make sure you top off your meal experience with a Cuban coffee.

Gimme Ropa Vieja and fried sweet plantains all day!! And flan!! Know that this is authentic Cuban, Venezuelan and Caribbean food. If you don't like it, then it isn't for you. But this feels just like home. This is the way we eat it. Cubano's needs more restaurants!

I absolutely loved this place. The food is amazing. Best part is that it's walking distance from my apartment and will definitely be coming back. The service was also excellent. I ordered the bread pudding which I did not like at all. It was hard and not edible. The waiter quickly asked if he could substitute it for something else when he noticed I hadn't eaten it. I ordered the flan and it was out of this world. I will definitely be coming back.

Surprisingly good food and service!! - Complimentary garlic toast: warm buttery garlic toast was very tasty. - Snapper tropicana: Great dish if you like friend fish and creamy sauce. Really filling but it was quite flavorful and satisfying. Black bean was well cooked so you won't miss mexican refried beans. I used scoutmop so I got 50% off and with that, it was a great deal, but honestly, I'm not sure if I would want to pay full price... The price was higher compared to similar food found in DC (e.g. Cactus cantina).

After trying 'cubano' sandwiches at 2 other cuban restaurants, and being disappointed by their versions (one had turkey, the other was very dry) I was very pleased with Cubano's cubano sandwich. The moros and christianos where pretty darn good, too. The mojitos were high octane, wow. We will return for sure.

I'm usually not a huge fan of Cuban food, but this place was pretty good. I got the ropa vieja, and the portions were HUGE! I also love plaintains, so I'm glad the dishes come with those. The mojitos were also delicious - and very strong - so be careful! Prices are a little more on the expensive side, which will probably keep me from coming here again, when there are much more affordable and better options in the area. I would definitely come back for the mojitos and maybe dessert though.

We were looking for something a bit more distinct than the usual trimvirate of Tex-Mex/Asian Fusion/Italian food. This restaurant was enjoyable and located rather conveniently to both a nearby parking deck and the Silver Spring metro stop on the Red Line. If it is operating. The restaurant has no control over this. The decor inside is cheerful and simple with colorful walls and some art. You pass through the bar area where they are usually making their highly popular Mojitos. Menu is extensive with sections of seafood, chicken, pork, beef, along with restaurant specialties, salads, appetizers, and drinks. One downside is that the resaturant is not particularly large, so if there is, say, a table of obnoxious women present for an awkward after-work happy hour, it can be noisier than it should be. This can be ameliorated by sensually eating plantains with your bare hands while staring in their direction. Lick your fingers a lot. I enjoyed this most because the food was distinct and something different than the usual: "add more cayenne". Portion size is good and prices were fine (we paid $50 for two, including tip). Those who complain about pricing need to recognize that if you want cheap, go to Olive Garden where the cooks have instructions embroidered on the back of their apron in case they forget how to operate the microwave. Screw you, Olive Garden. We're not family. My family wouldn't question who I brought with me into the bathroom. I feel Cubanos is a good restaurant for couples and small groups, especially if you want to get away from the Downtown Silver Spring noise and nonsense. Pros: Extensive menu and good pricing for the quality Convenient to metro and parking Not Olive Garden (I am aware Olive Garden pantomimes Italian food, not Cuban) Cons: Restaurant is not expansive, so can become noisy Tucked away location makes it initially difficult to find (may be good) Those expecting Tex-Mex should consult an Atlas prior to arrival.

Back again! My friends and I love this place and will continue to come for a long time. We tried to branch out this time and get some things we'd never had before. As always, we were not disappointed! This time, we had: appetizer plate: Bandeja Cubano's with Tostones, an empanada, croquettes, chicharrones, roasted pork, and fried yuca. The only one I could eat (no gluten or dairy) was the roasted pork, and it was delicious! My friends said everything else was great. - Churrasco a la brasa with chimichurri sauce: again, really good. Not my favorite, but no regrets about trying it! Still gets 4 stars. I wish there was more chimichurri sauce on the side. The steak is really thin. We ordered it medium and it was a little dry - I'd go medium rare next time. - Salteado de Pollo: sauteed with fresh cilantro, onions, and garlic with green and red peppers. Another solid dish! Not to spicy, and just the right amount of sweetness from the peppers and onions. 4 stars! Dishes I still want to try: Avocado salad, filet de pollo a la parilla, Parrillada Cubano's (for two) with grilled chicken, pork, lamb, beef, chorizo and shrimp, and shrimp dishes: Camarones al Ajillo & Pincho de Camarones. Dishes I have trouble NOT ordering every time we go: all three meats that come in the sampler that I could eat an entire plate of (Lecheon Asado, Ropa Vieja, Fricase De Pollo - in that order), Picadillo a lo Nene and the Vaca Frita. And obviously the mojitos.

This past Saturday, I went to Cubano's for lunch. I was super excited to experience the food as this was my first time eating Cuban food. I left so disappointed that I did not even want to take my leftovers. SETTING Décor was nice and clean. The tables and chairs are kept in good condition. SERVICE Slow, waiter only attended us to get our order and serve a food. So, we had to flag him down to get refills. FOOD 1) Appetizer: Chicharrones de Pollo con Yuca al mojo de ajo- Chicken on the bone cut into small pieces and served with yucca with garlic, lime an olive oil. MY EVALUATION: The Chicken was amazing and the yucca came out over cooked, but they did bring us out more that was cooked perfectly. I was excited to taste the rest of the meal. 2) Soup: Sopa de frijoles negro- black bean soup MY EVALUATION: My bf who is Haitian and loves sauce loved the soup and he said it was much like Haitian black bean sauce. I thought it was just ok. 3) Entrée: Mi Tierra (Three-Meat Combo Sampler with black beans and rice mixed togehter) ropa vieja (beef), lechon asado (pork), and fricase de pollo (chicken). MY EVALUATION: The pork dish was the best, very tasty and I would order this dish by itself. The chicken was unimpressive and the beef tasted acidic and sour. The portions are very small. I've heard others saying that the portions are good, but I disagree. It's $20 for a rice side that was less than half a cup, a small chicken leg, and half a cup each of the pork and beef. OVERALL THOUGHTS: I was so excited to try this place because of the reviews I saw on yelp, but Cubano's food was lacking. As I said earlier I was very disappointed. My first experience with Cuban food left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Lastly the bill was $42.00 which ended up being $17.00 with my coupon. I don't mind paying a higher price for good, quality food, but this place doesn't deserve it. I would never go to this restaurant without a coupon. But I doubt I will go again. And the leftovers are still in the fridge and will probably go in the trash soon.

I came here with my colleagues for lunch yesterday, and I found the service to be friendly, flexible, and quick. Our food came out soon after had we ordered it, and considering the number of customers that showed up when we did, that is quite a feat. I really liked the black beans and rice and the plantains that came with my lunch special. I didn't LOVE the crispy pork. I thought the empanaditos were good and generously stuffed with ground beef. However, the plantains as an appetizer was not my favorite. They were good about filling our glasses and checking on us. For dessert, flan was ordered, and it was popular at the table.

Kind of oily and heavy for my tastes. Pretty large portions. Food as advertised.

Saw this one day on my way to the metro and told myself I would go back and check it out. Decided to stop in at around 230 pm . It was fairly empty but that was fine with me. Was greated by an older woman at the front. She was cool but seemed to be preoccupied with a conversation she was having with a gentleman at the time. In any event I was craving Griot so since was probably going to be the closest thing I could get considering there are no Haitian restaurants in the DMV area I decided on the fried pork with white rice, black beans and plantains. I did take out , the wait wasn't too bad. When I finally Got Home and Opened the container I Was slightly disappointed. The rice was pretty good but the black beans were a little bland. They seemed to be missing some seasoning. The fried pork was good but way to greasy than what I'm used to with Griot. It was as if they didn't even drain the meat after they took it out of the oil. The plantains were delicious but they only give you two smh. Overall it was okay. I plan to go back and try something else and see how I feel.

I wish to clarify my rating up front. I gave them a two NOT for poor service or food, but because I had a gluten reaction when I was told that my meal was gluten free (more on this later). If I didn't have a gluten reaction, I would have rated Cubano's 4 stars. On suggestion from the waiter, I had Mi Tierra (Combo Sampler) and Mojito (rum type drink). The Mi Tierra consisted of Roja Vieja (shredded beef), Lechon Asado (shredded roast pork), and Fricaase de Pollo (chicken breast) with Moros y Cristianos (rice and black beans) and sweet plantains. The service was great and everyone was very friendly and truly helpful. The dinner was good but I felt that there seemed to be something missing in terms of seasoning. To be honest I never had Cuban cuisine but I am experienced with Caribbean cuisine. I thought everything was cooked properly and was tender and juicy. The Roja Vieja might have been slightly over salted. The component that really shined for me was the Moros y Cristianos which was nicely seasoned and had rich flavors. I also tried three of their soups. They are chicken soup, Crema de Platano (plantain soup), and Sopa de Frijoles Negros (black bean soup). I loved the Crema de Platano and Sopa de Frijoies Negros. When I went to the chicken soup, I noticed the soup had a scent and color that indicated to me that they are using a prepared base or stock. Before sampling the soup, I already had symptoms of my gluten allergy. So I was already "looking" for the gluten source. After a little discussion with the manager, he finally admitted that they are using a prepared beef/chicken stock (base). As most gluten sensitive folks know most of the prepared stocks are NOT gluten-free and I believed this is probably the cause of my symptoms. I, also, had the Flan for dessert (the only item on their dessert menu that is gluten-free). I found the Flan very sweet and nothing special. I would not order it again. Bottom line; I found the atmosphere and service great! The main course above average and the soup was great! BUT if you have a gluten allergy, you will need to drill them about what is actually in their food... I would talk to the manager regarding the ingredients (not the waiters). I would come back only if I can get a dish truly gluten-free....

Have been to Cubano's several times and have really enjoyed the experience. I've ordered one of the specials on each visit and haven't been disappointed (they are always changing.) The staff have always been friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed and bright. If you are new I would recommend on of the combination platters which let you try multiple main courses (beef, chicken, etc.) Also, they are on zazzco.com and scoutmob which is great if you are looking for a discount.

I absolutely love this place. I was trying to go to the restaurant across the street on 4th of July and it was closed so i thought i'd 'settle' for Cuban food. Nope. I didn't settle at all. It was DELICIOUS! I ordered to go and had a mojito while I waited for my food...the mojito was just what I needed. So good. So refreshing. 1 mojito and I was in a great mood! The waiter even taught me how to make a caipirinha if I ever wanted to. Showed me the right type of cachaca and the ingredients. He was really patient while I waited. I ordered for 3 people and all of us were satisfied. Beyond satisfied actually. Everything was amazing. I had the ropa vieja, my mom had Fricasé de Pollon and my cousin had the Pincho de Camarones. I couldn't be happier. I'm still surprised at how good it was. It was a bit steep but I wasn't ordering from a carry out so it's understandable. And I definitely got what I paid for. I will be coming back with my girlfriends in a few weeks!

The food is great. The flavors are not as strong as they are in the Cuban restaurants of PR or Miami but it is delicious and gentle to the stomach The "ropa vieja" is amazing. I loved the garlic bread and the Moros con cristianos. The yuca al mojo is great as well. Next time I will try the Cuban sandwich because a friend of mine told me it's amazing.

this place is so cute, no parking though. My friend lives around the corner, otherwise I would never have found this place. Customer service is awesome. great great great food, it's a little small, but I'll take it. We even had a coupon, yes a coupon, my friends and I don't play, we have a coupon for everything. A- for you cubanos, I'd go again!

We've lived in the vicinity of this restaurant for over 20 years, but never ventured to try it until tonight. What took us so long? The food is delicious; the portions are large; and the service is quick. We will be back (at least until we visit Cuba)!

I would eat here everyday if I could and never get sick of it. I've sampled much of the menu and I have yet to be disappointed by anything. The avocado salad was some of the freshest I've tasted in a long time. The ropa vieja was so tender. The orange chicken OMG a burst of flavor and so so oh so tender. Skip the picadera I think you get more bang for your buck ordering a LA carte. Their mojitos are better then their sangria but their sangria is a good deal as well. Not watered down at all.

I stopped by here randomly on the day of the Boston bombings a few months back, and then I saw it the other day and thought "Why didn't I give them a review!?" I ordered a few empanada-type things filled with beef and cheese to start (and a mojito), and unfortunately I ate an empanada that was too hot and I did that thing where my tongue was a bit burned and it kinda dampened my spirits. (Well, that and the whole bombing thing) But that wasn't Cubano's fault! Especially once I got that mojito with mint and a sugar cane stalk poking out the top, muddled throughout, and dispersing their flavor very effectively. I've always had mojito's and gone "Why this? You know about, like, beer and whisky, right?" This mojito was easily the best one I've had (which isn't saying much, but, hey, I liked it) For my entree I chose what the menu described as a Cuban classic - Ropa de Vieja, which is a cut of braised (or maybe boiled) beef, super tender, served with rice, beans, I think some plantains (if I remember right), and a hearty sauce. I like trying new things, and the flavors were delicious, but weirdly, I got alot of it stuck in my teeth! The service was a bit slow, but I'd love to go back and maybe order their namesake sandwich, and give them another chance to really impress.

Two visits to Cubano have left me with mixed feelings. The first time a few years ago left me wanting more; the second time, less. On my most recent stop-in, the patio was full yet the drinks a mixed blessing. Stick with the mojito and (gasp for all the wine-lovers out there!) definitely skip the sangria. My friend thoroughly enjoyed the Cuban sandwich, which looked crispy and delightful. My main, a combination of tender shredded beef and stewed veggies in a tomato sauce, was delightful also but definitely waaaaay under spiced. The main shocker came when the only approach to add any resemblance of heat was to douse the dish with a completely unspicy sauce. The yuka app was a disappointment and looked more like a baked sausage with ground who-knows-what-critter inside. Hmmmm...I remember being more thoroughly pleased with my meal last time; having said that, it was overall decent (2.7 stars).

Que sabroso! Food at Cubanos is delicious and authentic. I got the "Mi Tierra" sampler platter - it was ALL delicious and a ton of food. Highlights include the yummy sweet plantains and pulled pork. We also got the fried tomatoes appetizer with chicken and it was SO good.

Delicious Cuban cuisine, casual and authentic environment, with extremely friendly service. The plate I ordered would have been enough to get both my wife and I full - I couldn't finish (rare for me). Really enjoyed my visit!

We came to Cubanos for our first time. I had never had Cuban cuisine and was wowed by the Cuban sandwiches and blown away by the mojitos, possibly the best I've ever had. Would love to go back to try more of the menu.

Lechon Asado! Had it for lunch and it gave me that Cuban flavor I was craving, with rice & beans of course. It must be noted that they gave me a mini pork shoulder, seriously got my moneys worth there. The service was friendly and attentive. I also tried the Torta Borracha..when they say drenched in rum, they are not underestimating. After eating that cake I got really chatty with my coworkers..lol. This place always satisfied my Cuban cravings. Heads up- they charge by the glass for soft drinks. 2 Shirley Temples- $3.50. Not a big deal but if you're expecting free refills just know this isn't one of those places.

My boyfriend and I were headed to a show at the Fillmore a few months ago. Since this restaurant is nearby, we decided to get dinner. It was both our first time at this restaurant and we really enjoyed the food. We shared the Mi Tierra (Combo Sampler) and it was delicious! Highly recommended!

I have been frequenting this restaurant for about 10 years. We tend to use it as a special occasion, for birthdays or Mothers Day/Fathers Day, etc. This is the kind of place you go and sit for hours. This is not quick dining by any means. Go there in mind that the food usually takes a while, but enjoy the awesome sangria served in pitchers or carafes, while you wait! The decor is very bright, colorful, just as you might picture Cuba, Miami, and South Florida. The staff is mostly Spanish, and all very pleasant and attentive. You really never have only one single waiter...they come in teams of like 3 or 4. The service is really superb! They can also accommodate large parties, of which I usually go there for. The dishes things like flank steak, Ropa Vieja, plantains, tropical fish, tostones, various chicken dishes, Cuban sandwich, saffron rice, black beans, and flan. For those unfamiliar with Latin cooking, do not expect Mexican fare. This is not enchiladas and burritos....that would be next door at Mi Casa. Overall it is a nice experience. Most menu items do run about $16-$25, so it can be a bit pricey for families. Give it a try...it is a nice little spot in Silver Spring!

Viva Cuba y Viva Cubanos!!! Great place! Ordered vaca frita and morros y cristianos, everything was delicious! Great portions as well. The vaca frita itself is very savory, seasoned to perfection. No complains, I will definitely be back! Two thumbs up!

My fiance and I have come here frequently for happy hour, dinner, when family is in town, well for any reason, and absolutely love it! We have been at least a dozen times and have been very pleased with this place each visit. Every dish and drink is tasty and a great value for the price paid. Great choice when in Silver Spring.

Came here with some friends after on a Saturday afternoon. The free freshly baked bread with butter was delicious. I ordered one beef and one chicken empanada, and they were also delicious. I ordered the Argentinian steak with yuca and rice and beans. And my girlfriend ordered the grilled chicken. My steak tasted good, but not great. My girl's chicken was OK but not that good. I felt like those dishes were a little overpriced for the way it tasted. For desert we got a tres leches piece of cake, and it wasn't great at all, especially not for $7. The older gentleman was really nice, but he kept suggesting too many different things, and even made my friend change her order because he didn't recommend her 1st choice. He also wanted me to change my yuca for tostones, but I hate tostones. Lol. I know he was just being nice, but come on, can we just order what we want. But he really was a guy. Overall, its a nice Cuban restaurant, but we felt like we overpaid. The appetizers were great. The food was ok. We didnt like our desert. Will go back only if friends want to go.

I love eating at Cubanos when I visit my uncles in Silver Springs. It's at a convenient location next to the metro. The ambiance inside is very homey and later in the day they have a band that plays traditional Latin American songs and other stuff. The food is delicious and the drinks are very good too!!Everything is freshly made and has a lot of flavor. The mojitos are banging and made fresh to order. If it's your birthday the band will sing a custom song for you and get everyone in the restaurant to clap along. Overall Cubanos provided a great experience and if you like Latin American food it is a must. Personally I don't really like Latin American food all that much, but Cubanos is one of my few exceptions.

Yum! I enjoyed the food. We had the Parrillada Cubano's for two. The sauce was delicious and really made the dish for me. I am not usually a fan of meat-heavy dishes, but I found myself wolfing it all down. The black beans were great, too. We had the fried plantain chips as an appetizer and I thought they were a little dry and overly crunchy and just generally lacking in flavor. The garlic mojo sauce was tasty, though. We thought the server was weird. He took our orders, but wouldn't clear our dishes when we were done. After we indicated to him that we were done eating, he signaled another waiter to come over and take our dishes away. It was weird, as though he thought that task was clearly beneath him... He also really pressured me to have a drink. Almost to an uncomfortable point. At the end, he accidentally charged the wrong table to our credit card. We pointed it out to him and he had to get another waiter to come over and fix it for him. It was as if they let drunk Uncle Julio hang around the restaurant and take orders sometimes...

The food here is amazing. Their Cubano sandwich is fantastic, and heats up well the next day. If you want a selection of things, the have a combo platter, which has chicken, pork and beef, along with a couple of sides (rice and beans, and some starchy not-potato thing, both of which taste great). I've honestly not had anything here I didn't care for. They give you some garlic bread (which is, admittedly, a bit dry, but that works for some people, and I can eat a piece or two before I have to dip it in something). For those that like beer, they have a selection of beer, to include Cuban and Dominican beer. I don't like beer, so I can't comment on it. The decor in the place is nice, although there are a few cramped tables, they do their best NOT to put people in them, until the rest of the place is full. The service is fairly quick, the food has always come out hot, but not so hot that I couldn't eat it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for good Cuban, if they have the time to got to Silver Spring. Also, there is a parking structure just down the street, that is free after 7, and on weekends, and a one block walk to this place.

Their guava Mojitos are extra nice. They are on the strong side and you will need a designated driver after only two. The service is always good.

I have been here a few times over the years, the last two times I sat outside and that is what my review is based on. The food and mojitos have always been excellent, I'd give 5 stars on that alone. The service on the other hand is extremely slow and not very attentive. Just order two drinks at a time and you should be good.

    (4)
  • Natalie M.

Cubanos claims to make the best mojitos in the area. While I can't say that their mojitos are the best I've ever had, I will admit that the mojitos here are pretty strong. If you like your mojitos heavy on the rum with just a hint of mint, then this might be the drink for you. I on the other hand prefer a drink with a better balance of ingredients, so I opted for the Caribbean Blue Margarita. The service was satisfactory. My four friends and I waited only a few minutes for a table. Our waiter Conrado was attentive, but he talked so softly that it was difficult to understand anything he said. I ordered the Snapper Tropicana, which consisted of fried snapper, grilled shrimp, vegetables, saffron rice, and sweet plantains. To say the snapper was crispy would be an understatement. This dish sounded so delicious, but unfortunately wasn't well executed. I definitely should have gone with something more traditional like the Ropa Vieja. This is a small restaurant and the tables are fairly close to each other. The acoustics are terrible so if you are laughing and having a good time like my friends and I were, your voice will carry and you may be warned by the staff to quiet down. I give Cubanos a 2.5.

Super delicious food, and even better service! Their mojito's never disappoint, and I've ordered the Pollo Crema Vedado about a hundred times. My favorite restaurant in Silver Spring, hands down.

I've started coming here again since I work around the corner and so far, the food has been great! I've had the shrimp in garlic sauce and lechon asado lunch specials recently and both were delicious. If only I could bring myself to unbutton my pants so I could finish the hearty portions! Service brings a couple of hiccups, like lipstick on my water glass or not having an assigned server (seems like whoever happens to be walking by your table takes your order/gets your drink/gets the dessert menu). But regardless of who helps, all of the servers are generally pleasant and helpful. Great alternative to the downtown slop!

This place was wonderful. It seems to be family owned and everyone is gracious and polite. The food was served quickly and it tasted like heaven. I would go here again. I took off one star because my "ice water" was room temp with no ice in it.

  • Denise L.

Overpriced and bland. If I hadn't eaten Cuban several times before, I would question whether or not I would enjoy Cuban. The meat was overcooked and dry, to the point that it could be considered burnt. Definitely not worth near $20 per dish.

Used my restaurant dot com couphttp://www.yelp.com/dc#on...maybe that's what the manager didn't like. I ordered after my friend and I waited about 10 min to be attended. Then when I recv'd white rice instead of a more flavorful, colorful choice of rice. The waiter AND manager told me it was too bad that I didn't order my preference and they don't make changes.I'm a different race. Wonder if that was the reason for the extra-abysmal customer service. It was virtually empty too; that says much. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE and will tell others about the unfriendly manager.

    (1)
  • Tammy S.

Food was okay, nothing great. Overpriced for what it is. Would consider going back since there aren't many Cuban restaurants in the area but not at their prices for the average food.

  • Josh R.

It's solid, straightforward Cuban food. I grew up in Miami, and I can attest that Cubano's has just about every traditional dish in the cuisine. I recommend the lechón asado, accompanied by moros y cristianos and maduros. This is a 3.5 star review, because it is overpriced and the service is hit-or-miss. The ambiance could be cozier, but I like the art on the walls.

  • Jessica J.

The Mojitos are awesome!! My friend loved the sangria (until the ice melted). Food was fab! The rum cake is SOAKED with rum and I wasn't a fan because it overpowered the cake...personally I thought I only ordered one drink but this gave me a second round.. It can get pricey so come prepared to pay, but its worth the money. Brush up on your Spanish as most of the wait staff speaks it (truly authentic so I can't complain). All in all, I'll be back...especially since I live nearby :-)

  • Sarah R.

Upon walking in, it was truely authentic. I felt like I had to speak Spanish the whole time, like I was ACTUALLY in Cuba. Our waiter was so gracious and sweet. We had a fairly large party and ordered appetizers - Empanaditas (both chicken and beef) and the Yuca fries. By consensus the beef was better and the Yuca fries just killed everything. SO GOOD. My entree was the Bistec Empanizado-cracker crumb crusted, thinly sliced top sirloin, seasoned with adobo and gently pan fried, which always comes with rice (white or saffron) and black beans. If you've ever had schnitzel, thats what it tastes like. The portion is HUGE. I probably ate 1/4. The others in our party had the sampler (Mi Tierra) and then some more flank steak dishes. All very good. Steak seems to be the go-to. At the end of our order, we were told to wait a few minutes and they brought us out a tres leche cake! FOR FREE. It was so sweet (the offer) and the cake itself was delectable. It made our nights. Did I mention we had mojitos? Everyone loved them, but I felt it was insanely sweet for my taste. They give you the real deal here, tons of mint, sugar cane stick, and half a lime. It was a really pleasing atmosphere overall. Good experience. I gave 4 out of 5 stars because I didn't feel good afterwards. As much as I'd like to NOT attribute it to the food, it was way too close in timing to not persuade me otherwise...everyone else was fine though and some of us have been multiple times. It's a go-to in Silver Spring!

ONLY VISIT CUBANO'S IF YOU GRAB A COUPON FROM RESTAURANT.COM!!! ($25 card for $10 or $15 card for $6.) I didn't get the quality of food that I thought I was paying for. My wife and I both felt that the food was salty and less flavorful than we hoped it to be, mainly because we love Cuban food. I'm always a fan of a Cuban sandwich, but not for $15! The Mojito was very nice, and the food is definitely authentic, but the value is not great.

This place is SO. GOOD. I've never had Cuban food before, so I was excited to give it a try--and I was not let down. I ordered the Mi Tierra, which was a platter with Rope Vieja (beef), Lechon Asado (pork), and Fricasé de Pollo (chicken). The Rope Vieja and Lechon Asado were AMAZING, but the chicken was slightly dry. My favorite on the plate was the pork--the orange sauce was SO good, and the meat was moist (I hate that word, but it's the only perfect descriptor) and...so good. Just so, so good. The sangria was OK (strong), and my friends told me the mojitos are tasty and strong. My friend was full, so I stole half of her Cubano sandwich later on...super delicious. All in all, this place is a neighborhood gem I'd highly recommend.

When I worked at Mi Rancho across the street, it was positively traitorous to venture in here for dinner. Now, well over a decade later, I finally decided it was time to take the plunge. Most important takeaway of the night: order a mojito. That sucker is a worthwhile investment - not because it's so delicious, but because it's basically straight liquor with a handful of mint leaves. The hubs and I both have a pretty high tolerance, and we were both pretty sloshed after one (ONE!!) mojito each. Then we ordered another round. FTW! The food was enjoyable, but not the reason I'll be back. Their famous ropa vieja was one-note, tasting mostly of tomato sauce, and was better the next day in my scrambled eggs. Hubs's snapper would've been better if it wasn't fried; in fact, it was tastier once I peeled off the fried outer crust and could actually taste the fish meat. But let's be honest, that's largely irrelevant, because as long as the food's palatable here, I'll be back for those mojitos. I haven't had a mixed drink in a regular-sized glass that hit me that hard since the good ol' days of college, when jungle juice consisted of 1 part juice to 20 parts jungle. Oh, last thing of note - the patio tables had Nellie's Sports Bar umbrellas. That struck me as fucking hilarious when I was plowed, and actually still seems kind of funny.

  • Carrie J.

This is coming from a girl who spent some years down in Miami! The food here is consistently solid. The mojitos are as good as everyone says, and I love that they include a piece of sugar cane. Pro tip: Leave that in your drink until you are done and then chew it up to get some rum-infused sugar. Yum. I usually end up with the vaca frita, my favorite Cuban dish. It is crisp, salty, and oh so savory. Their caramelized onions are actually caramelized, which is something you don't always find with restaurants that print it on their menus. If you go for brunch, they have an amazing sandwich that has plantains with beef or pork (I can't remember which). That combination of sweet with savory is something to write home about. The only complaint I have is for the cuban espresso, because the sugar was dumped in the cup and not stirred before serving. That being said, I have yet to have an authentic one outside of Miami (full disclosure: I've never been to Cuba). From what I've seen, the proper way to make one is to put the sugar in a vessel (not the coffee cup) and as the espresso is pulled from the machine in that vessel, it is stirred to melt the sugar. And then the vessel contents are poured into the final cup. Just so you know!

The food is very good....only complaint would be that it is a little on the pricey side compared to what I was used to paying for Cuban food while living in Miami.

Wowza! My husband and I went here for our date night ... oh ... my ... goodness ... it is heaven for your mouth. We got the dinner for two platter (lamb, steak, chicken, sausage, and pork) ... let me tell you ... you know what, I have no words to describe how good it was. IT WAS SOOOO GOOD! and HUGE! It could have easily fed 4 people. We had so much meat left over. .... and we love meat! It gets pretty busy so make reservations... and you still may have to wait a little but the food is well worth it. Our waiter was very nice, ambiance is great. We loved this place. I'm all about food tasting good (well seasoned) and not overpriced. It is a little pricey but we enjoyed our evening there and loved the food so I think it was worth it.

We parked in the garage down the street and strolled the half block over. Bringing your own wanna-be Latina helps clear up any mojito mix-ups when the final LWL bills come out. Cozy decor; I felt like someone's grandma decided to put down tablecloths and converted her home into a fancy diner. Staff were very friendly to us once they saw us enter, but I'm sure Hilvic gets that reaction any time he walks into a joint with seven women in tow. These mojitos were right up my alley, and yes, I've met mojitos elsewhere that I didn't like. Just strong enough in alcohol content without being overpowering. Shredded mint leaves clung to the ice cubes, and the granulated sugar that accumulated on the bottom was easily stirred in with tiny planks of sugar cane. I let Jen tackle the pronunciation of the app we wanted to share. When the chicharrones de pollo con yuca al mojo de ajo arrived, I found that the chicken was cooked through perfectly and any bone shrapnel had been properly washed away prior to cooking. Yucca was just as fresh from the kitchen, soft comfort food that was bland on the seasoning. Chicken empanadas were flavorful, but the beef empanadas were less dry. Nibbled on Hilvic's maduros. The sweet plantains were cooked through well, but he "accidentally" added a whole sugar packet to sweeten the treat further. Olga and Noralyn were kind enough to share bites of their budin de doris with me, Elena, and Hannah, and it made me think of Panera cobblestones with less cinnamon and more syrup. The bread pudding was generous on the raisins, not too dense, but still a very sweet dessert that hit the spot. Service was okay. I think we were slightly neglected despite the size of our party. I'll be back to give this place another shot. I definitely had plate envy as I watched Kat mow through some delicious looking ropa vieja.

These guys cook so Cuban, you'd swear you're in Havana having your meal! I usually state that if one is a true aficionado of 'legitimate and traditional' Cuban food, one must come to grips with the fact that there is almost no 'real' Cuban cuisine to be found in the Metropolitan Washington Area, even if few and far between, then only can your expectations be changed - in coming to 'Cubanos' you realize that occasionally there IS Cuban Food light at the end of the tunnel for those who live in the Nation's Capitol Region! The argument that because of the assimilation of the Cuban Diaspora within most metro areas outside Miami, New York and Chicago, that the best Cuban victuals are relegated to nouveau cuisine, variations on a Caribbean theme with the restraint and homogenization is pretty much put to rest by Cubanos. Their offerings of traditional dishes with traditional styles and traditional ingredients is heartwarming. Their renditions of: Puerco Asado (Roast Pork); Pernil (Ham); Yuca con Mojo; Ensalada (Salad); Mariquitas (fresh Deep Fried Plantain Chips); Platanos Maduros (Fried Sweet Ripe Plantains); Moros y Cristanos (Cuban Black Beans mixed in White Rice); Tres Leches (three milks) flan are a Cuban Cuisine connoisseur's dream. Highly recommended - we plan on continuing to eat their victuals.

Went here with the fiance on her advice for dinner. Was right around the corner from my hotel off the strip from downtown Silver Spring. The food was great really great. I had the Mi Tierra which is a meat platter which a sampling of pork, fresh Cuban baked chicken, and beef. It was really favorable I personally liked the Chicken and pork the most. The other meats were good too but the Chicken was extra moist and tasty. It was served with beans and rice and plaintains. When the server brought the food I thought wow this is a lot of meat. I took half home for lunch the next day. I made a really tasty sandwich out of it. My fiance had some baked fish was good from the one bite or so I had. I will say that dinner was a bit pricer than I thought; most entrees were around $20 but I did make two meals out of it so it that respect it wasn't bad....and the food was good. They should maybe think about turning that Mi Tierra into a snadwich Now service wasn't 5 star.. your waiter definitely isn't going to come around every 3 minutes but I was ok with that. I go to a restaurant for great food and good service.. and thats what I got.. I'd definitely go again..The food took a little while because they really cooked it in authentic fashion. So if you wanna enjoy something different try this place. I'm Nigerian and have fallen in love with Cuban however please remember everywhere isn't McDonalds where you get your food in 90 seconds. Lay back here, relax and have a good time. The Mojitos are wonderful also.

Great neighborhood restaurant. A bit more expensive than Mi Rancho across the street but definitely more upscale. I can't wait for the weather to clear up so I can go to the sidewalk cafe without freezing! The staff is friendly, but when there is a crowd, the service is a bit slow. Good menu selection. I wish they had a better selection of beers. Cool crowd and a nice place to hang out.

While in Silverspring I asked Siri for a Cuban restaurant and Cubano's was the first choice. As we enter the restaurant we were greeted by a friendly host. The waiter, an older gentleman was very friendly. The dishes we ordered were perfect! We ordered the Vaca frita and Filete de Pescado a la Varadero. I will definitely go back for the food, the restaurant cleanliness and friendly staff.

So far, this is the best Cuban food we can find in the DC area. We visited Miami this summer and tried to recreate the magic... it's decently close to what we had in FL. We've had the Ropa Vieja and Masitas de Puerco Cuba Libre with the Moros y Cristianos rice (only fools get the plain white rice). Their happy hour is a great deal and can easily be turned into dinner. My husband and I spent $50 on 6 drinks and 5 small plates, including tip. Cocktails are $3.75 during happy hour (3-6). Their Mojito is great, but can get sweet after the first. For the second round, try a Caipirinha, which is a bit more rum heavy and the national drink of Brazil. The cocktails were strong and quickly prepared. We tried the Chorizo Asado, Mini-Cuban Sandwiches, Empanaditas, Ham croquettes, and the special of the day, the Fried Calamari. It was all quite satisfying after the strong drinks. The only think I would change is make the happy hour go until 6:30. Commuters don't ususally get home until 6. Quite a great experience, headed back for dinner with friends in a couple weeks.

I have gotten mi tierra, tres leches, the rum cake, the avocado salad (yum!!!), the mojitos and sangrias! I love the meats!!! Juicy, tender, well seasoned and in expensive. 4.5 stars The tres leches is good, moist, sweet and tasty, not super gourmet or the best thing in the world but good for the value. 4 stars The rum cake had a slightly bitter flavor due to the high rum content but its was still decent - 3 stars Drinks - the server lets the liquor flow with the mojitos!!! 4.5 Sangria 5 star!!! Super tasty and inexpensive Service - 3.5 stars, good but can be a bit slow at times ambiance 5 stars! I love the big space and the decor and warm feeling inside and the fact that cubanos is only a block away make the restaurant feel more like a home for me!!! overall 4 stars! I should go here more often for the booze and the food.

Food: 3 star Service: 3 star Atmosphere: 3 star We had the crispy chicken as appetizer. Just ok, they brined it too long and was fried for too long. Honestly it tasted like Chinese buffet wings. We also had the paella and the "tapas". Paella was not bad, but the "tapas" was just a bunch of randomly cooked meats slapped on top of a bowl with white wine gravy. shame on you. lol. mojitos, on the other hand, was not bad though :). i would not come back unless they have a good deal going on. it's too expensive for what you are getting.

I gave this place a try after reading mixed reviews. Wish I hadn't. The ropa vieja had too much tomato and was very underwhelming. My cousin agreed. She had the Mi Tierra which included ropa vieja and lechon asado (roasted pork). The pork was ridiculously salty. We told the manager about the saltiness as we left, and he replied we should've told him earlier. We would have if someone asked during our meal. The mojitos were fresh with a slice of sugar cane. That's the only reason I would return.

Haven't been here for dinner, but the lunches are indicative of this possibly being the best restaurant in Silver Spring. The tilapia filet that I had yesterday had a crisp exterior and was moist inside, with a sauce that had garlic and lemon, but wasn't overly strong on either. The chicken soup is as good as my own, and the ropa vieja sandwich is a tasty comfort. Sat outside for Salad Primavera with shrimp today, which was great, and for $9.99, an unbelievable bargain. A good salad is made up of exemplary ingredient; the artichoke and hearts of palm weren't the usual mush, and the four good-sized shrimp were tasty, tender (again not mushy) and without a hint of iodine. I've been here after work, by the way, and the mojitos are not sparkling, but they are fresh, tasty, adult drinks. Did I mention that the staff is great? I will!

Usually I've never had a problem coming here to eat some good ropa vieja. BUT coming back after so long I wonder what happened to this fine establishment. There might have been a change of owners or management because the service and food was kind of lacking for me. We asked for TWO pineapple juice which the waiter said they were out of so we got mango and guava instead. However, on the receipt I was charge for TWO pineapple and ONE mango. Thus I was charged for ONE extra drink we did not get. Also, the flan we ordered was vanilla but when it came out there was a hint of coconut which then the waiter took back and tried and talked to the manager and they TOLD us it was not coconut. He asked if we wanted a new one, if not then he wouldn't charge us for it. BUT guess what? We were charged for the flan regardless. I was very disappointed that I had to pay for an extra drink and for something that was promised not to be charged. I usually never have a problem with the check so I didn't check it over but that was my mistake. Thus, I would recommend everyone that comes here to check your receipt and make sure everything is correct. I'm sorry to say that we won't be coming back!

First, I would like to mention that in the era of "review inflation" on Yelp, my 3-star rating does not mean that Cubano's is a bad restaurant by any means. It was good; just not the best Cuban food I've ever had. The atmosphere is simple and authentic with plenty of seating. (I'm not sure how full that gets in the evening.) The garlic bread was fairly typical, but there's an additional charge for extra baskets ($0.50 per person at your table). I went with the Sandwich de Ropa Vieja with side salad and my dining companions got two of the other sandwiches: a pork one and the traditional Cuban. My sandwich was nicely grilled on a fresh baguette but it was a little light on meat. Also, there was very little cheese--I could barely decipher what type it was. Still, it had a good tomato and spice flavor, without being too hot. The salad was standard romaine/iceberg/carrots/onions/peppers/cucumbers and the dressing wasn't anything spectacular. The other sandwiches were also good--and much heavier on the meat than mine was. Everything was reasonably priced and the service was prompt and friendly. It's not a bad place if your in the mood for a fast, simple, inexpensive Cuban lunch.

The only reason to go here is for the Yuca Rellena. The chimichurri sauce I had with my steak had chunks of bay leaf in it. I have never had chimichurri sauce with bay leaves in it. I almost choked!

We are new to the Silver Spring area and this is one of the first places we tried. We loved it. I had the Cuban sandwich and my wife had some chicken on the bone dish that was slow cooked in a tomato gravy. The service was perfect.

The staff is always friendly as my office has held a few happy hours there. Our office holiday party has been there for the last several years. The beer selection is not big as the mojitos are the crowd favorite. I've only eaten there as part of the holiday party and the food was average. There has never been a crowd and the noise level is good for holding a conversation. Outside seating is available.

Went to Cubanos for lunch with several work colleagues. I can't really comment on the food because I didn't receive any. After setting for 45 minutes we finally got a drink order. When the server finally got around to taking orders he skipped over a couple of us multiple times. Two hours had past before the food came out. No drink refills during that time, no nothing. The food might be good, but that does not matter if you can't get past the horrible customer service. So, if you are unemployed, have no responsibilities, can kill several hours at lunch, and not really hungry give Cubanos a try. Oh, don't park in the street thinking you will save money just paying for the meter by avoiding the garage. You will be sinking money into that meter like feeding coins into a slot machine but with no payout.

Let's see. We had the Lechon Calle Ocho, Chicharrones de Pollo. Appetizers were so good we ordered a couple more. Then the entrees came. So, we overordered. But, it's magnificent Cuban food. I have my favorites, of course, and they're all here on the menu. Wait staff is attentive and friendly, and they've redecorated since I was last in here. Great job, Cubanos! (PS. For parking, there's a municipal garage 100 yards to the west of the restaurant. Before you pay, look at the hours of operation. It's free after a certain hour.)

If there's one thing that I hate, it's a restaurant with good food and bad service. I don't know if it's because we were Gringos or if we went on a weekday afternoon or what. The food was excellent, which made me really unhappy that the service was so bad because I really like good Cuban food. And this place has good Cuban food. I can't tell you what we had, except we both liked it. And we were both tremendously disappointed in the service. Which isn't a problem as the likelihood of us returning is extremely slim since we live a couple of thousand miles away. But if you go, I would not expect stellar service.

I had the opportunity to visit here for lunch a couple of weeks ago with my fiancee's parents, as I have heard excellent things about their lunch offerings and if they were anything like their dinner, then we were in for a treat. It was. While I recommended some of the entree dishes for company, I tried the Cubano and my fiancee had a Chicken and Plantain sandwich. The first thing to notice here was that they got the bread right. To make a *good* Cuban, it's important to have a baguette style roll that is crispy to the point of being crunch on the outside, yet fluffly and not dense on the inside. This they had. They also didn't slouch on the traditional ingredients, using a whole grain mustard as opposed to straight yellow, and pickles that had a crisp crunch to them. That, plus their always excellent meats led to one of the best Cuban sandwiches I've found on the east coast. Overall Cubanos lives up to its reputation for me now for both Lunch and Dinner.

This is a little gem hiding in Silver Spring. The restaurant is very bright on the inside with cheerful paintings. The menu has a good amount of options to choose from. I tried the fried yucca and croquetas but thought the yucca was better. The Lechon Asada was delicious pork that melted in your mouth. I have also been here for happy hour which is a great deal. The mojitos are potent and the mint is fresh. The sangria is quite tasty and also strong. Drinks for $3.75 from 3 pm to 6 pm. There are tapas for under $4 as well - try the empanaditas (chicken) and the sweet plantains. You won't leave here disappointed.

Oh Cubano's...what happened?!? Once upon a time, when my husband and I first began dating, this was one of our favorite spots. The food was delicious, the alcohol was strong, and the atmosphere romantic. Then my husband (then boyfriend) moved up to Germantown, and we never found an occasion to come back. Until the magnificent Kat S. mentioned that she was free for dinner, and remembering her review - I jumped at the chance to come back to our once beloved spot. So what happened? The chicken empanada that Kat ordered turned out to be beef, which is fine (mistakes happen), but it took until the middle of finishing our entree, before her chicken empanada made an appearence. The ropa vieja was definitely as delicious as I remembered it, savory, tangy, with a delectible punch of garlic, but the fried plantains that came with it, looked like it had been sitting in oil for too long. Eh. The mojitos were delicious (as mojitos are wont to be), and as a Yelper, there was a 2-for-1 special...as long as you mentioned the discount when you ordered. Then the service...it was sloooooooow. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a nice leisurely pace when I'm having dinner with friends...but there were times when I was wondering if my longed for ability to turn invisible was finally manifesting. All in all, it was a decent meal, and the space is still uber-cute, however it definitely has gone down a little in quality since when we first discovered the place (wow...10 years ago! Damn I'm old!).

Cubano's is not very vegetarian friendly. I believe they only have one entree dish (grilled veggies) and one appetizer (fried plantains). And they are both probably grilled in pork fat since that seems to be the main staple on their menu. I came here with my neighbor at her insistence before heading over to the Majestic to catch a Saturday night flick. I told her there would probably be nothing to my liking on the menu. I am partial to alcohol though so I agreed. Long and the short...nothing for me. I was hoping for a cheese empanada, but only chicken and beef. They had a sign out front that read 'try our tapas menu", but I guess that meant their Aperitivos (appetizers) which were all beef and ... pork. I settled on an order of calamari ($8.50) and a red wine sangria ($6.50). neither were standouts, but then I don't eat calamari on a regular basis. All I can say is that it wasn't rubbery. My friend had some kind of soup and a salad with chicken pieces. The decor is pleasant and inviting; much cozier than I expected. Too bad I won't be returning unless they revamp their menu. Eva G. mentioned that they are only open until 9 pm. That's Sunday only. Other days they stay open until 10:00 or 11:00pm. So, I guess Cubano's isn't a good choice for late night mojitos either. All in all my little meal cost about $18 with tax and tip. I think I'll stick with Chipotle's from now on.

FINALLY! CUBAN FOOD! Cue victory awesome dance!!!! I went to Miami to attend law school, and had a love affair with the local fare. For those of you who think they know Miami -- there is better Cuban food beyond Calle Ocho, I promise. Having been back in the District for a little over a year now, I'd been pretty bummed about the lack of Cuban fare here (Cuba Libre does not count whatsoever as Cuban Food and they should be ashamed to call themselves such). So, I did some research, and found Cubano's hiding in Silver Spring. Aye dios, que delicioso. We began with the appetizer platter- fried yuca, a beef empanada, some shredded pork and fried chicken, served with a tomato-garlic sauce. Not one bit of the food was over-fried or over done, and every bite was full of flavor, and the sauce, ooh boy, could've eaten it with a spoon. While the boy wasn't a fan of the fried chicken, I enjoyed the little morsels; they pretty much fell right off the bone and melted in your mouth! For entrees, the boy ordered the ropa vieja, and I had the vaca frita. Again, the frita wasn't overfried in the least, incredibly flavorful shredded beef. The ropa vieja was so moist and tender and the tomato sauce it came in was bursting with flavor. The white rice was cooked to perfection, nice and sticky, and the black beans were cooked WITH PORK (yes, that completely warranted caps lock), ohh man I could've eaten myself silly but had to stop. I had a glass of sangria which was sweet and strong, aka RIGHT ON, and the boy had a couple of mojitos which he said were made to perfection as well. Bottom line: If you're craving Cuban fare, head here. If you've never had Cuban fare, head here. You will leave with a very happy tummy and awesome leftovers!

Sorry, but I have to give my honest opinion. Growing up on and Island surrounding by Puerto Rican culture and being raised Puerto Rican is no different to Cuban or Hispanic culture. One thing is for certain, Cuban authenticity is Cuban authenticity. This is not authentic Cuban Cuisine. Maybe it was some time aback. A few years ago. But the food does not convey Cuban cooking in the cocina. Readers you will not like this review. Sorry... I zipped in here after reviewing it for four days. I have been looking for Cuban food here in the DMV area for years. Ive had Cuban cuisine, in San Juan Puerto Rico, Vieques, PR, and Miami and Orlando Florida. The reviews said authentic, garlic bread is a true statement (Somos Cubanos) however, this place is not it on Fidler Lane. The bread was good but garlic butter spread salt. I ordered the Bandeja Cubanos w/out the Yuca. I got Goya on my plate. Goya Empanadas, Goya Tostones, Goya Croquettes and the Lechon was not made fresh that day. I know, I buy the Goya products and heat at home. Shame on you Cubanos. I will return to try your Dinner Menu and hope to find a taste of Cuba in your entree. Really disappointed thus far.

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and agree with everyone else: the ropa vieja rocks. I've never had Cuban before (minus the Cubano at Fast Gourmet), but after my experience here, I am definitely keen on trying more. Great food, friendly service, and looks much nicer on the inside than outside. Only gripe is I think it is a bit pricey for what you get.

Great neighborhood Cuban food. I've lived in Silver Spring for almost 4 years and never noticed this restaurant--it's a hidden gem. A deal on Scout Mob is how I heard of the place. My bf and I planned on dining in but we got there just as the kitchen was closing. I was disappointed that we didn't get to dine in because the ambiance inside is really cute and cozy---I've never been to Cuba but I could have sat in there and pretend I was in Havana! Our waiter was really nice and very patient with us since they were just about to close. I had shrimp kabobs with black beans and rice and I really enjoyed it. Will be back again early enough to sit down and eat!

If your looking for tasteful Cuban food.... Look elsewhere because it ain't here. This place needs an over haul and a new chef. Ok, so I used to love this place. Especially the dish of tostones (green chip like plantains) and shredded chicken and my all time favorite was the vaca frita. I used to eat this all this all the time and it was flavorful, juicy, tasty and I would always stuff my face. Not this time! I just barely ate one bite. I haven't been back to this place in a year or more and I will never be going back. The food was tasteless and gross. The plantain dish tasted like it was missing flavor. My vaca frita was lacking salt and garlic. It tasted like it was over fried, dried out and as if it was cooked one earlier in the day and they reheated it. My sweet plantains were stale and old and my white rice was like eating paste or plaster. Nothing had salt or flavoring! I was sooooo disappointed. And their prices have gone up! Someone please tell me why?!?! Your food is terrible! The garlic bread had no butter or garlic on it either and now your charged for a second basket. WTF??? My dinner dates had the mi terra, and their food was pretty bad too. All the salt that was missing from the other food was found in the ropa vieja. Eeewwwhhh! Sssaaallllttty!! Obviously this chef has either fallen off or was replaced. And they need to find their old chef. And it's very obvious that everyone knows this place is terrible, bc it was DEAD! The weather was beautiful and everyone was at Mi Ranching across the street but no one was at cubanos. Which should have been red flag number one. Don't bother wasting your money or time here. Wait and eat Cuban in Miami! There are zero places here that have authentic Cuban food.

Like a lot of others, I'm in love with their ropa vieja. Let's not forget their tres leches cake and the mojitos. Delicious! My husband and I use it as a go-to place for celebrations and for visiting family. We end up dropping quite a bit when we go (it's nice that it's within walking distance, because those mojitos can do a number on you), but always feel it's worth it. My husband experiments with what he gets (I've found the ropa vieja and that's all I need), and he's always quite happy. Appetizers are the right size to share for two. And the plantains, even if they're just a small side on the main dish? Quite yummy. The waitstaff is always attentive, helpful and generous--I can't count how many times they're brought us dessert on the house. Always happy to head to Cubano's.

So their food was probably a four but the service a two. We caught the tail end of happy hour, and our server seemed annoyed that we asked for happy hour specials, but we did anyway. For $3 don't expect to get much calamari! It was a ridiculously small portion. Empanaditas were great. Mojitos were not great, too sweet and not enough alcohol - switched to Coronas after the first one. We shared the mi Tierra for an entree and were very pleased. Highly recommend. We wanted tres leches for dessert but they were out of it so we skipped. Overall I don't know if I would go back but it was ok!

  • Lakesha L.

Salt, salt, salt, and more salt!! Last night, I had the calamari, frecase de pollo, and tres leches cake. The calamari and chicken tasted like they had been marinated in salt overnight, rolled around in salt, then dipped in salt before being cooked. Oh, and just for good measure, I'm sure they sprinkled more salt on the food before it reached the table! I only got through about a quarter of my food before I had to give up. The service was fine and the place was almost empty on a Thursday night. The only saving grace of my meal was the mojito and the tres leches cake....both abosolutely delish!!! P.S. They wouldn't include the appetizer, desert or drinks on the 50% off scoutmob deal. BUMMER!

Omg the food here was awesome!! Mojitos are power packed!! Idk what the name of the dish we had was called but it was a platter of grilled steak, chicken, lamb chops, chorizo, peppers and onions. Everything was tender and juicy!! Plenty for 2 to share.

Love this place!!! My husband and I come here often. It is the best kept secret in downtown Silver Spring. The food is amazing and the drinks are NOT watered down. The drinks are actually mixed perfectly...not over-powering, but not weak. You must try the mojitos here! They have mastered it! It is in a quit neighborhood in downtown and the restaurant itself is very cute and cozy.

So, I finally made it to Cubano's! I was very excited about the menu because the list of dishes looked authentic - like made by somebody who knows Cuban food. When we got there.. we got greedy and decided to taste as much as possible - for that reason we got for appetizers La Bandeja Cubana and as an entree Mi Tierra. This was a challenge - and we gave it our all! The appetizers was good - my favorites were the empanadas, croquettes and roasted pork. The tostones were on the dry side and the chicharrones were no the classic chicharrones. They were basically fritada - small pieces of pork with skin. Not chicharron that is really only the skin. The fried yuca was fine - but i dont care for it so dont take my word on this one. Next was Mi Tierra. La ropa vieja, el asado and the chicken were good. Why just good? Because, even though the flavors were there, the quality of the pork in particular was not the best. Also, we were a bit dissapointed by the arroz con moros. This is a staple of so many latin dishes. The rice was a overdone and just not as good as it should be. The plaintains were delicious! Our ending was the flan - that was well done! The service was excellent - however, I am latina, so I cant say that the service I got will be the same that you will get. Oh! And I got my 2-for-1 mojito by saying that I came from yelp. The mojito was not only good but strong!

We went here on a whim because we wanted to try someplace local. Soon after we were seated, the waiter brought us a basket of bread that was stale and smelled of old oil. For entree, we got the combo platter and the filete de pescado a la varadero. Unfortunately both dishes were sorely disappointing. The combo platter was essentially a big pile of dry, super salty meat. The fish was drenched in a weirdly sweet slimy garlic sauce over a bed of mushy peppers. When we asked the waiter, we were told that that's "how it is in Cuba." I think not -- I don't have to be a cuban to know bad food. We left it mostly untouched. I thought this place is over priced and the slow service was frustrating. Beware.

We came here last night and absolutely loved the food, the service, and the atmosphere. We had the Yucca Rellena (stuffed yucca) which was so delicious and makes me wish I could make it at home, the Empanaditas de Pollo (Little chicken empanadas) in which the chicken was incredibly delicious and savory (not dry like other empanadas can be) and then we also shared the Churrasco a la brasa (Argentinian flank steak) which was really fantastic. The steak was tender and grilled with the perfect amount garlic. It is a bit pricey - to be fair - but I really think it was worth every penny and I hope to come back soon.

Hands down my favorite Cuban restaurant! I order the vaca frita almost every single time (and sneak tastes of whatever delicious dish my hubby orders). It is so crispy and full of flavor. I have no idea how they make the rice that comes with it but it is phenomenal. Don't forget to order a mojito, too, they are strong and delicious!

Didn't like Mi Rancho across the street? ME TOO!!! That's why I came here because I heard their Cuban dishes were awesome......drum roll on the selection and quality of food here....MAGNIFICANT!!!! Seriously, I'm coming here like a broken record, over and over and over...you get the point now. Not only are their Mojito's hands down AWESOME, but they make dishes so you can share (tapas style) which I'm a fan of, so this worked out well for me every time I'd go there. Inside is very cozy bright and vibrant, I think I'm in love. I'd take family, friends, a special someone (wooohooooo!!!), if you don't like this place, then there's something wrong with you! Pressure,...ya feeling it? Yup...just give it another chance. It's like a relationship that ended, but on a funky note, just try it out again and see if it works out this time, things have changed...you've both gone to different places to look, now you've found each other again....just give it another chance baby.....

While on a little getaway, we stumbled across this place and it did not disappoint. Being a great Cuban cook myself, I rarely go out to eat Cuban food because it usually does not measure up. This place is the exception. We started with a mixed appetizer platter. Definitely more than enough to share among friends. The croquetas were perfect. Everything tasted just as it should and there was no foul dirty oil taste to any of the fried food (a problem which plagues numerous other places). Then we had the ropa vieja and the masitas de puerco with white rice and black beans. Maduros were included and were sweet...as they should be! Both were reminiscent of a Saturday dinner at my grandmother's table. We ended our meal with cascos de guayaba (guava shells) y queso crema (cream cheese). Again, nothing high tech, but just perfectly authentic in its simplicity. The only reason I didnt give them 5 stars was because their Cuban sandwich sports mayo (as noted on the menu ... we did not order it). If you are looking for an authentic Cuban meal, give them a try. They definitely won me over.

This was my first time trying Cuban food, and thanks to Cubano's, I'm a FAN. I had the #27, I can't remember the name of it but it was GOOD, and they make a damn good mojito! Excellent service.

Whenever I want to impress someone who is looking for great food, I take them to Cubanos. The food is simply AWESOME! The atmosphere is cozy and quaint. Great for a sexy meal - and I have have some of those here too. My friends have chosen the Ropa Vieja (old clothes) and they always rave about it. I personally am in love with their Pollo Crema Vedado (Masala Chicken). it is soooooo tender and flavorful. The black beans that come with the meal are to die for. The drinks are tasty and potent too - even the Sangria. I consider this one of the best eats anywhere. Great for all ages. Come and just know that you will have a great meal.

Everything I've had here is outstanding and the mojitos are delicious. This is a perfect dinner spot after seeing a movie at AFI, although I'd make the trip to SS for dinner here alone. The restaurant itself is cute, tucked away on a side street between the metro and the shopping plaza. Inside it has nice bright colors with two dining rooms, which makes for a cozy experience. 4.5 stars just because I think the prices are a little high, but nothing unusual for DC, and it hasn't stopped me from coming back again and again.

SSHHH!! That's what the waiter Conrado told our table! I guess were a bit to loud for the ambience. Mind you we could not hear him all evening, I had to request him to repeat what he said several times. As you can see it really irked me. But Let's move on to the food no need to rehash spilled milk. I met four of my friends here for dinner. We used the ScoutMob discount (Shout out to ScoutMOB for the 50% discount!) We started with drinks. Two people order the Mojito's after the waiter stated they were the best in town. But they said that they were just ok. They have had better. One had the blue margarita. She said it was good better thtean the mojito. I had a glass of White wine. The other person had hot tea. I had the Picadillo a lo Ñeñe. Basically Ground beef with potatoes ( non-existent), green olives, capers in a tomato sauce. It was basically sloppy joes with no bun. it was just ok. I should have went with my gut and ordered the Churrasco a la Brasa. two people ordered the snapper tropicana. One person ordered the sauce on the side and the other person wish she did. The fish was drowning in the sauce. She said it was a bit much for her taste. But, both of them enjoyed the dish. One person ordered the Salteado de Pollo she really enjoyed it. The last person ordered the Chuletas de Puerco Calle Ocho. She really liked it. She said it was moist usually people overcook pork. Since I don't eat pork i really don't know what that means but hopefully the pork lovers understand For dessert the table ordered the Torta Borracha.. I didn't have any cake due to me giving up sweets for lent :( But they did say it was really good and they only left 2 bites on the plate so I will guess it was thumbs up! Overall it was a good experience. It was no wait and the food was pretty good. I would probably come back in the summer for happy hour when the outside seating is available. It's not "knock your socks cuban food" but it solid minus the noise dictator.. The prices are pretty reasonable also.

One of the best restaurants in silver spring. The waiter recommended some awesome entrees and also some very good desserts. The atmosphere is also cozy but authentic. Will go back anytime I am in silver spring.

I went here with two friends and had a great night of eating. We split two appetizers and then the paella which was enough for all three of us. The paella was delicious, which I say as even as an avowed skeptic. We either had mojitos or sangria, which was were also well done. It was surprising to have such good food so close by in an out of the way place, but it was delicious and not overly expensive for three people sharing food like this.

Solid Cuban food and longtime Silver Spring mainstay. Tried the sampler plate. Everything was excellent. It was my friend's first try of Cuban food, and he left impressed. This place seems to always deliver the goods.

Being the youngest person in an Asian family, it goes without saying that I am the last person consulted when decisions are made about anything. Therefore, when the opportunity to dine in Silver Spring was presented, my ideas of Teddy's Roti Shop and Ray's the Classics didn't even make it to the negotiation table. Instead, the family curiously eschewed the traditional South Asian selections and picked Cubano's, a Cuban restaurant apparently heavy on seafood options, for dinner. Salt levels aside, I'm glad they did. There are two components that nearly every review on Yelp captures for this restaurant: the Ropa Vieja and the mojitos. The Yelp 2 for 1 special on the mojitos is an absolute steal; if you come here and don't do it, the only excuse you have is that you do not drink. Even in that case, this is the type of place where you should reconsider your life decisions. There is ample evidence contained in this drink that your decision is incorrect. Why is it so amazing? Well, aside from the nice rum base and the fresh mint, the restaurant doesn't use a simple syrup to flavor the mojito but rather a slender reed of pure sugar cane. The best part is that the sugar cane soaks up the alcohol in a manner similar to olives in a classic martini. For those of you who enjoy tiny morsels of food soaked in alcohol, this is a good place for you to go. Let's also talk about the Ropa Vieja. The description on the menu for "Old Clothes" kind of sucks, but I'm glad I listened to Yelp reviews because this shredded beef concoction marinated in a multitude of flavors was absolutely delicious. I had a great experience with a chicken dish here as well, but the Ropa Vieja is this restaurant's specialty. Go for it. The bottom line is that this restaurant is definitely worth your time if you live in Silver Spring. In spite of having no opportunity to properly vet this restaurant, I'm glad the family made this decision without me (Cubano's was not even on my radar). I'd definitely come back again.

Great mojitos! Seriously high quality. Awesome way to pass an afternoon - sit out on their patio sipping mojitos. They also have a good menu with traditional Cuban food and tapas-like dishes. Staff in my experience has not been very friendly, but I guess that could have been the language barrier. Also not a bargain - good drink and food, but not cheap. Worth checking out once in a while!

We went to Cubanos for dinner on a Friday nite. Our first taste of cuban cuisine and it was awesome! Service was great and the mojitos were good. Thanks Yelp for the 2 for 1 mojitos! We did the 3-course route, shared the beef empanadas and pork stuffed cuban style polenta. It came to our table hot and yummy. For the entree, my boyfriend and I shared the Parrillada Cubano and it came in a sizzling plate. We tasted everything on the plate except for the pork because we were so full and still want space for dessert. The rest of the group ordered #'s 19, 27, and 33... we tried each other's dishes and everything was delish! For dessert, we shared 2 tres leches and a bread pudding. Oh yea, it was good. Good food and great service. A must try.

Excellent Cuban food. Everything was authentic and good. No complaints other than it is a bit pricey, but the quality is very high so the price is fair. They made the best Ropa Vieja I have ever tried. The picadillo was good but not as good as some other preparations I have had. The mojo was really, really good. The mojitos are very good. They are a bit on the dryer side, less sugar than other preparations I have tried but just enough sweet to be good. The rum was STRONG so be careful with this one. And they get a lot of bonus points from me for serving AUTHENTIC CAFE CUBANO. Too many cuban places claim to serve this yet serve it unsweetened. This is like claiming to serve authentic potato chips then serving unsalted chips coated in sugar. It's close, but so, so, so far. The service was super polite and professional. We were seated outside and it was pleasant other than the occasional ant crawling on your arm. At least there were no mosquitos in the evening and no ants made it to my food. Solid Cuban food! There are cheaper options for Cuban food in the area but the ambiance and presentation is not nearly as good as here.

Since everyone that gives this place a negative review feels compelled to list their 'Cuban credentials' ("I fly down to Calle Ocho and eat arroz con pollo with Castro's second cousin every day, so my standards are pretty high."), I'll throw down. My Puerto Rican fiance is an excellent Latin cook, and she and her mother love this place. Her immediate family lives in Miami now, and I can tell you from frequent trips that Cubano's is as good as most (not all, but most) Cuban places I've been down there. The croquettes and chicharrones were good, and my ropa vieja was excellent. The fiance said that they must have had an actual Cuban in the kitchen, because her pork dish (I forget which one) was great as well. She exchanged 5 seconds of dialogue with our waiter in Spanish, and he pauses, looks at her, and says "You're Puerto Rican," to which she replies, "Yep, and you're a Cuban." We had a laugh, and we were reassued that there were people working there, ya know, of the actual nationality of the food they sell. Shocking how rare that is! Full disclosure - We went to this place on our first date, so that may have colored my experience, but subsequent trips were just as good.

I've been here several times and have never been disappointed by a dish here. And the mojitos here are quite good. By far the best Latin eatery I've been to in this area. The best dishes are the ropa vieja (a traditional shredded beef dish) and the pollo crema vedado (a chicken dish with a hard-to-describe but delicious cream sauce), which was the waiter's recommendation. The tostones are perfectly done, and come with a mojo sauce which is too die for. Wait staff are usually very friendly. The decor inside is nice and bright and they have a good outdoor area that's perfect on spring days (though the noise from the tex-mex place across the street can be a little obnoxious). My big compliant though is that they allegedly have a two for one mojito special if you mention Yelp. However, the waiter claimed at first it was for happy hours then it was that it was weekday only. Nowhere in the offer does it say either happy hour or weekday only, so we were a bit miffed (and those mojitos are a little pricey, though they did make 'em strong). Only negative I've experienced there thus far.

An AMAZING Cuban restaurant in the area. The portion of ropa vieja (shredded beef stewed with tomatoes and peppers) in my sampler was tender, flavorful and overall delicious while my husband's picadillo was thick and flavorful. Meal comes with a basket of garlic bread - yummy! Their cafe con leches was strong and milky delicious, and their Cuban coffee was sweet and strong. Decor was clean and colorful reminiscing of a laid-back Cuban cabana, and the staff was very attentive. It took me three years to come here after bookmarking this place. The quality of dishes are top notch and on par with what you can find on Calle Ocho in Miami. Took off a star for the price since it was pricey for what it was ($15 for a Cuban sandwich platter?! You've go to be kidding me!) You can get more of the same quality food for less in Miami, a city just as expensive as here. I don't regret coming here though - still a solid place for Cuban food.

Best Mojito in town! OK on to the food, the food is good can't complain the atmosphere is nice and the service is good. I come here often with my girls and I really like their fried pork and fried yucca. Their rice and beans are good and so is their empanada's. I love their happy hour menu makes my 5 dollars go a long way!!!! I'm def a regular and will continue to go until I find something better.

The place sucks. If you've ever hand anything resembling decent Cuban food you will leave Cubano's feeling hungry and ripped off. i'm 99% sure no one working there is Cuban. My wife and i both gave up 1/3 into our entrees and didn't bother to take the leftovers home. (disclaimer) I've eaten Cuban in Miami's calle ocho a million times, so my standards are high, but this food sucks by anyone's expectations. Everything was...off. Cafe Cubano: -tasted like metal shavings -no esputima -seemed like it was poured from a pitcher on a warming tray instead of out of an espresso maker. Masitas de puerco- -tasted like salt and GARLIC POWDER and nothing more -not worth $19 -no lime?! Shrimp -over cooked -def. not fresh -the sauce tasted like cheap Chinese food, all salt and corn starch. -not worth $20 Yellow rice -served at room temp -gummy and stuck together like paste -tasted more like macaroni Black beans -thin sauce -tasted like minerals or dirt? -seemed to be poured from a can rather than cooked Platanos Maduros -weird unnatural sweetness -seemed to be deep fried then tossed w/ sugar instead of prepared correctly all this terrible food and a dining room that smelled like bathroom chemicals for $43. do your self a favor and go anywhere else. this place is a dump.

Cuban raised in Miami by a mom who can throw down in the kitchen. That being said, I am naturally skeptic of most "Cuban" restaurants. I can cook the stuff at home but was feeling lazy. 1) it's the priciest Cuban restaurant I have ever been to. That could be the DC but seriously I can get this stuff 1/2 off somewhere else. 2) it was nice to have toasted bread served. 3) the vaca Frita was flavorful but soaked in grease. Vaca Frita well made should not be greasy even though it's fried so ease up a bit on the oil. Overall, it's ok. But I would rather drive to Cuba de Ayer next time I want Cuban food and feeling lazy.

Still trying to shake off the potency of the mojito. I'll go here again just for that drink. We do a fair share of boozing around the area so I think I have a decent tolerance. It only cost me $7.50 (one mojito) to feel pretty well buzzed. They taste real too. Not sweet but not tough to handle at all. The food was meh. Loved the table hot garlic bread. Both our dishes (the red snapper and ropa vieja beef) were one so-so note. My fish had great side veggies and plantain but I didn't like the amount of friedness to fish. The beef needed something else to give the dish variety. The charm of the patio filled with Spanish speekers and our waiter push Cubanos into a definite repeat. We will just try two different entrees next time.

It was my last meal as a pregnant woman and what could possibly be better than some paella! I needed to carb and protein load for my induction the next morning and have been eying this place for a long time. Its not far from Holy Cross Hospital, which sent it straight to the top of my short list of places I was craving. My husband went off to get me my meal. He really enjoyed the space and was able to have a delicious Mojito at the bar while he waited for our food. My husband makes THE BEST Mojitos and he said these were just like his. I cannot wait to try them for myself! The paella for two was expensive but massive! It should be paella for four! Don't get me wrong, we ate almost all of it. The rice was cooked perfectly, there was plenty of chicken, chorizo, shrimp, scallops, squid, etc. The mussels were a little grainy and the clams had fallen out of the shells so, the shells just had rice in them. I enjoyed it big time, but it doesn't compare to Tio Pepe's in Baltimore. My hubby liked his fried plantains and I killed my garden salad. Dessert was average. My husband really liked his rum soaked cake. my chocolate cake tasted like chocolate pudding with the same consistency. I was disappointed with the one note cake, but would happily go back for some paella! and a mojito!

Pricey... but good. The reviews are spot on about the Mojitos... heavy on the sugar, and mint, but perfectly refreshing. The food was out of this world good... The app was a potato pancake that was absolutely fantastic... The bread baskets are deliciously buttered... But my sampler plate... for $10 was the steal of the night.... It had a lot of everything... not some skimpy sampler plate... each portion was absolutely delicious... And the start... was the super rich... super indulgent tres leches cake... couldn't have gotten any better than that! Highly recommend stopping by here... and the mojitos are half priced during happy hour!

M and i went with another couple for an early dinner. We're white, the other couple is African American (relevant to the review). The waiter seemed to make every effort not to speak with the other couple. Only we were asked if everything was OK, only we were asked if we liked our meal or needed anything. Three of us were drinking coffee but the cup of our friend was not filled. We felt uncomfortable with the whole scene. Sad and disturbing.

Cubanos in Silver Spring is still among my favorite South American/Caribbean Restaurant in Maryland. How can you resist the flowing sweet Mojitos, Sangrias and even Brazilian Caipirinhas. Authentico when it comes to Cuban entrees my favorite still after 7 years or more is the Ropa Vieja made of Shredded beef in Cuban-style sauce with tomato, garlic, onion and red and green peppers over a side of white, steamed rice. I typically don't order appetizers when I'm in Cubanos not unless I'm with a big group. I tend to save my tummy space for the libation and desserts. If you must have appetizers I highly suggest you try some Empanaditas Olga traditional turnovers with either ground beef (picadillo) or seasoned savory chicken and their Tamal en Hoja, Creamy Cuban style polenta studded with succulent bits of pork and red pepper served steaming on a plantain leaf. When it comes to dessert you can share with your date order two of my favorites; the Pastel Tres Leches. A famous Latin American dessert! A nostalgic, moistly enriched sponge cake and Flanes María Vanilla o Coco creamy and rich flan either traditionally flavored or with coconut.

Two words sum it up: Delicious food! Good menu, reasonable pricing, good service and setting. I've eaten here twice, and enjoyed the flavorful dishes both times. This past Friday, I had the grilled chicken entree (unfortunately, I don't recall the proper name of the dish). We also has the appetizer sampler platter. On each visit, I was with a group of 4 and I've noted that everyone loved their entrees on both visits. The service is pretty good, ambience is warm and intimate, but note that this is a not a late night spot so they start closing down for the night around 10:30pm. Also, the women's bathroom could use a little TLC, but it's not worth docking points on them. Sidenote: You can park for free after 7pm at the lot on Cameron St.

Solid dinner/drinks option in the heart of Silver Spring, but off the beaten path enough that outdoor dining is lovely and quiet. We take advantage of the prix fixe menu specials on Tuesdays and Wednesdays - soup, app and choice of 6-7 superb entrees for $23. Everything tastes like real, authentic food - nothing compared to, say, some of the other Mexican options in the area. Incredible and fresh mojitos, caipirinhas and margaritas.

I haven't written a review yet? I feel like I've been here at least 5 times. Cons- I don't speak spanish. I know I look like I could.. but I don't. And when I don't sometimes the staff looks at me like I'm crazy lol. Also, service, although really very nice, can be a bit spotty. I wouldn't be in a hurry if I were you... PROS!!! Super duper friendly service, and strong mojitos (2-for-1 Mojitos for Yelpers! Come in and enjoy our popular mojitos at half price with the purchase of food. One offer per table--just mention Yelp!) yes its true. I've had to call a cab. I get the ropas viejas and it comes out with rice, plantains, and black beans. so so so so yummy. Its the best I've had outside of little Havana. Also between the beef and chicken, the chicken empanadas take the cake. Although sometimes they do come out cold in the middle... but otherwise, they are FANTASTIC. Reasonably priced, and fairly convenient. Close to the SS metro, and 1 block from a very affordable parking garage as well as on street parking. :) go go go go!

For those of us that live downtown and do not drive, Cubano's might as well be in Canada. But, havingplanned for some many months now to get a Cuban sandwich from these guys, my time finally came and stars aligned. We rented a car for the Columbus Day weekend for a trip up north to the parents. Leaving work on a Saturday at 4 we called ahead and they had 2 Cuban sandwiches and 2 side salads waiting for us when we rolled in Silver Spring. Let's just say it was one of the best trips up I270 ever. I had no idea the sandwiches were so big so we ended up splitting the first one as we headed north up the highway. 2 hours later I tore into the first half of sandwich 2 and the other salad. I think it tasted even better after the flavors had a couplehours to gel together. Had the second half of sandwich 2 the next day for lunch after a quick warm in the oven (never the microwave). I have to say I'm impressed. The fiancee spent 6 months in Cuba for her term abroad and she was impressed, easily the best Cuban she's had in DC. We had planned on stopping here before a film at AFI in the near future and it looks like that has to happen sooner rather than later.

3.5 stars -A- ok. Went there for a lunch date today with the hubby. Saturday, cold and rainy Saturday. Parked on Cameron Street in the private parking facility which was free on Saturday. Someone said before that the service here is slow- I would say they were slow paced but, it didn't bother us too much. We ordered: 1) drinks; 2 for 1 yelp mojitos. Pretty decent cause I like my mojito sweet. 2) App: beef and chicken empanadas. (we liked the beef better than the chicken but both were good.) 3) Entree: ropa vieja (delish) and carne asada (not bad) 4) Dessert: tres leches cake. My husband loved this and he usually doesn't eat dessert. It crumbled in our mouths. 5) Total: $65 without the tip. Very reasonable. 6) Smiling waiter was a nice touch :). It wasn't spectacular dining but I would definitely go back if I was in the neighborhood or if it was a balmy summer night and I was sitting outside with a mango mojito :). Enjoy!

I wanted to find a new place for the 5 of us girls to unwind and drink. I had a sampler to get a variety of food and it was just OK. I wasn't really impressed with the food. Service was Ok too. It took awhile to get a menu and it seems it was hard for them to understand what I wanted in English (even when we paid, they had to come back to us again to ask what we wanted to do with the payments). I asked if they had a frozen pina colada (there was rum and other fruity options so I thought they would, but they said they didn't. I guess you can only order what was on the menu for the drinks. I had their mojitos, actually we all did. We had three or four rounds and they definitely affected me (not sure if it's because it was really that strong or I just didn't eat enough). You could definitely taste the alcohol, but it was tasty-- good mint, sugar cane, yummy! Def one of the best mojitos I've had. We sat in the patio, it was nice out, but mostly because it was really quiet inside (no music was playing and not many people inside) and we knew we'd be loud. The place across the street (Mi Rancho) seemed it was a bumping/louder place than we were at. But I still enjoyed it because of my friends and even though they closed at 10pm and we were still there at least 30 minutes past...they didn't kick us out. We just eventually asked what time they closed and they said "an hour ago" and so we were like "ooops, sorry" and left. Not sure if I'd come back, maybe just for the mojitos. Oh I did order the Pastel Tres Leches and that was delish! But I wouldn't be a place I'd go regularly at.

I've only had Cuban food a few times so I will not even try to front as an expert. I've mostly associated Cuban restaurants with casual lunch counters so I was pleasantly surprised by the bright and cheery interior. The menu is extensive and a bit pricey so at the suggestion of our server we settled on the Picadera for two. Basically, it's a large platter of chicken breast, beef strips, chorizo, calamari, and shrimp in a rich butter sauce with potatoes and fried yucca. Not a green vegetable in site. Not that there is anything wrong with that. The butter sauce is delicious but very heavy and a tad salty. I'd recommend ordering a side of rice and beans or asking for extra bread to compliment all that meat and to soak up all the fatty fat floating in your stomach. The plantains that I smuggled from my friend were sweet and perfectly fried. I also sneaked a bite of tres leches cake which smooth, creamy, and a light finish to a heavy meal. Although I enjoyed my food, the service was awkward. Our server was pushing our group to order more food and drinks. We ordered 2 mojitos and mentioned the "2 for-1 Mojito special on Yelp", assuming that meant one was free. Instead of bringing one free mojito, he brought 3 total. He charged for two and then brought a free one. I enjoyed my drink but I felt uneasy mentioning the miscommunication because of his aggressiveness and I let it go. I would consider coming back if I was in the area again but only if I don't have to get all Warren G and regulate.

One of my favorite lunch joints in Silver Spring. Their Cuban sandwich is fantastic and comes with thinly cut fries. They also have lunch specials on weekdays that are very well priced and delicious! My favorite is the "Boliche Asado Estilo Eloisa" which is a roasted eye-of-round with potatoes. Finish it off with some extra sweet Cuban coffee and the rest of the afternoon will fly by.

CliffsNotes: Surprisingly simple and surprisingly tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed the generous portions of the savory and garlicky ropa vieja ($10.95). However, the picadillo, which is supposed to be a house special, closely resembles a latino version of sloppy joe's. If you've craving the empanaditas ($4.25) stick with the chicken because you'll just be disappointed with the beef by comparison. Lunch prices are fairly reasonable and I recommend aiming for the daily specials. [Original Visit: April 6, 2010]

Very glad we finally came here. First off, the mojito special Yelp mentions? Get it, and love it. I was assuming it'd be some lousy 2-for-1 that had like a touch of alcohol and a lot of filler. Not at all...it was a STRONG mojito! Great start to the night! I found the service to be great. Was it speedy and fast and food on strings, whoosh whoosh whoosh? Heck no, and whenever it is I tend to assume 1 thing; reheated food. If I have to wait a little longer for higher quality food, so-freakin'-be-it. We enjoyed an app the night we went. I do not recall the name, but it was yucca wrapped around a beef filling. I'm going to remember the name as soon as I hit "post." You'll find it on the menu, and I highly recommend it. A bit pricy for the amount of food, but very, very good. I was hoping to come here and be utterly blown away by my favorite sandwich ever- the Cuban. While it was very good, it wasn't quite to the point where I'll never order anything else again when I come to Cubano's. Nonetheless, it was really good and if you like Cuban sandwiches, it won't let you down. What I *will* order next time we go is that Ropa Vieja. My wife ordered it and I couldn't stop stealing bites. That was fantastic eating. Seriously. I about ordered some to go so I could chomp on it while waiting on the train to arrive. On the strength of other reviews we tried the tres leches cake. Maybe I'm just not a dessert guy. My wife said it was pretty good, but I was just neutral on it. Overall, though, I dig this place a lot. Good, warm, homey feel to it and the staff were all very friendly and took good care of us. We'd been out on the Metro and riding around DC on day 2 of our holiday shopping epic, so coming here was a very good chance to relax, have a drink, and warm up with some good food.

I get take-out from here at least twice a month. The ropa vieja is amazing and the white rice is also very good. Everybody that works there is always very friendly. This place is way better than Cuban Corner in Rockville.

I must say this restaurant hits a home run every time I go there. The service is great. The dishes are as authentic as you can get. I believe they have the best Mojitos I have ever had. They use real sugar and real lime juice and not simple syrup or roses lime juice. If you are lucky you will see the owner Adolfo there. Tell him JR sent you! Get there or be square! :-)

Good food, everything we got was excellent. Good drinks, everything we had was delicious. There is also outside seating which is fun. DO NOT go to the Mi Ranch across the street because it is the opposite of this haha. One downside, service is not incredibly on point, but its def worth the wait.

My husband and I dined here just once and it was enough to figure out that we would not be going back a second time. The food was a bit expensive , portions where small and not all that tastey. If you want authentic , delicious, never dissapointing cuban food visit Cuba de Ayer.

braved the traffic and trekked to MD to try the food here. happy to say that I wasnt disappointed at all. the entire area is painted brightly to create a festive ambiance. Had picadera and the whole dish very tasty but was drenching in oil. Empanaditas (chicken) are filled with pulled chicken seasoned just right. service is attentively pleasant none of the annoying pushy servers. would like to try the rest of the offerings in the menu next time around.

I lived right next door to Cubano's in the Twin Towers apartment building for over six years, and can say with complete confidence that a trip to this Silver Spring gem will not disappoint you. The walls are fun and brightly painted, with colorful paintings hung in every corner. While it's not the fanciest of restaurants, nor does it have the most exceptional service, the food leaves nothing to be desired. To start, they'll provide you with a breadbasket that's generously filled with soft-in-the middle-toasty-on-the-edges garlic butter bread. (Not the bland, mushy kind you might find in a sub-par italian chain restaurant, but the kind that reminds you how delicious real garlic bread can be.) While you're deciding what to order, get a classic mojito--especially if you're sitting outside. So fresh! For appetizers, the chicharrones can't be beat. There's something rustic about eating the chicken right off the bone, and the mojo sauce is perfect. For dinner, my personal favorites are the Picadillo a lo Nene, the Ropa Vieja, and the Lechon Asado. All three are generously portioned, and flavorful. Each of these dishes (and almost all of the other entrees) comes with a cup of their rich, savory black bean soup and a side of fried plantains, with just the right amount of sticky caramelized sugar sweetness. For dessert, you absolutely must try the tres leches cake...BUT for god's sake, tell them to hold the chocolate sauce. Here's the history-- the first year or two when I moved in, the tres leches cake was nothing short of perfection. In fact, after a particularly hard day of work, I'd swing by Cubano's on my way home and order just a piece of it to go! But a few years ago, they began serving it with some sort of terrible chocolate sauce that tastes eerily like the ubiquitous squeeze-bottle Hershey's sauce. Which of course, completely ruins the smooth, creamy-sweet flavors of the tres leches cake, and makes it taste as boring as a cheap ice cream sundae. So, please do yourself a favor and make them leave it off. You'll thank me later. All in all, the meal is very reasonably priced, in a fun, festive setting. It's actually a perfect date spot for someone with an adventurous palate who's fond of lively conversation (I've had quite a few successes there myself!) Oh, and there's an incredibly cheap public parking garage a half a block away, but it's only about two and a half blocks from the Silver Spring metro, so either way, you're covered. So give Cubano's a try. It's always nice to help a small non-chain restaurant stay alive, and this is definitely one that needs to stay around for a good long while. it's one of those great little hidden gems that's a bit off the beaten path (and feels worlds away from the overly-commercialized and gentrified downtown Silver Spring).

Went to Cubano's for dinner this evening. It was our first time at this restaurant, and we enjoyed the food. Service was excellent. We got there about 6 pm or so, and the restaurant had only a few diners (figures . . . it was a Sunday night with freezing temperatures and 5 inches of snow in the forecast). We ordered the sangria, which was good. I ordered the combo plate (sweet plantains, ropa Viejo, pork, yucca, rice and beans, chicken, etc.). My partner ordered the yucca and chicharonnes (not sure of the spelling). Both dishes were great. The combo platter has a generous helping of meats. The ropa Viejo is 'rope-y' and a little more chewy than I would like, but flavorful. The plantains were excellent, as was the chicken (the chicken fell off the bone). The highlight was the pork with onions. It was wonderful. The rice and beans were initially just okay . . . but I let them sit in the juices of the meats, and after a minute or two, after absorbing the juices, the rice and beans were delicious too. Service was wonderful. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. I would definitely go back and would consider Cubano's a go-to restaurant whenever I am in the mood for Cuban food.

3.5 stars bumped to 4, because 3 would be selling this place short. This was our second time at Cubanos. We started with the shrimp cocktail appetizer -- expensive at $10, but worth every penny. Some of the best I've ever had! For entrees we ordered the Ropa Vieja (shredded beef in red sauce) and the Bistec Palomilla - a well prepared steak covered in sauteed onions and served with some black beans and rice. Both dishes were served with fried plantains, which was a nice touch. There was consensus that the Ropa Vieja was better than the Bistec Palomilla. It was more flavorful and seemed more uniquely Cuban, which we both liked. We did also try the Yelp mojito special. It was a little disappointing. The mojitos were so-so and served in a rather small glass. We'll be back at Cubano's soon! It's a good Silver Spring restaurant with a lot of character and some good food!

Totally overpriced! Plus, my food was lukewarm. I ordered the Masitas de Puerco. Pork was tender on the inside and crisp on the outside, but was lacking in flavor and swimming in a pool of grease (the so-called "mojo" sauce). The pork came with a laughably small portion of overdooked rice and beans, and a few plantains. The plantains were the highlight of this mediocre meal. Paid about $20 for this. Served with a side of scowl from the server. Absolutely criminal. If you are craving Cuban, skip this joint and head up Rt. 29 to Cuba de Ayer in Burtonsville. Cheaper, much more flavor, and friendlier service.

I made reservations for Christmas Eve dinner one day in advance, and they said the latest seating they offered was 6pm. We showed up at 5:50pm and there was a sign on the door stating "Christmas Eve Last Seating 6:00pm" The lights were off and the door was locked. I knocked on the door and an older gentleman came to the door and started turning the lights on, and speaking in Spanish to a younger guy who was wearing his coat, looking ready to go home. We told him we had a reservation, and he basically said they would seat us and honor the reservation, without any explanation for why they had closed early. We weren't interested in being the only people in the restaurant so we left. Bizarre!

This place is as close to grandma's Cuban cooking that you can get. I love this place. It is like walking into a family member's house and sitting down and having a great meal. I love the mojitos here. They don't try to add a lot of extra "flavors" to the mojitos. They stick to the pure flavor of the rum, sugar, and mint! Love the coquetas and the ropa vieja here. I have tried almost every dish here and have loved them all. I usually go here whenever I get the opportunity.

i really like this little cuban restaurant. it seems like a hidden gem, and that makes sense based on the deplorablel date i had here. you know you like a place if you want to go back to try more of the menu even after a seriously tainted experience there. dude calls me up out of the blue asking to take me to dinner to confess that the reason he'd pulled a disappearing act months earlier was b/c i was apparently - wait for it - his MISTRESS. he felt like his behavior [taking me out all over DC] was getting too risky. ugh!!! SMDH. IDK who's the bigger idiot - me for being so clueless that he was a taken man or him for, well, evrerything else. why he felt the need to resurface and confess, i'll never know, but at least i got a really tasty meal out of it! lol. i got tilapia with black beans and rice, some avocado slices, pico, and maduros. every bit was delicious. my plate went back clean. i don't remember what cheater-man got at all b/c by the time i was focusing on it (during his confession, but after they'd taken it away to box up leftovers for him), i was just irritated that it was already gone and i had nothing to throw at him (other than my fist, which i definitely thought about). i didn't have a drink [lucky for cheater-man] on this date, but have heard their mojitos are awesome. ditto for the ropa viejo. and most of the rest of the menu. it's pretty pork-heavy, though. that's not uncommon in cuban places, but i don't eat pork so i always notice/remember it when i see it. not a lot of vegetarian options either, just FYI. the servers are very nice and attentive. even moreso if you tell them in spanish that your date is a supreme jerk right in front of his face. lots of smiling and laughing and nice comments while acting like no, we're not talking about you at all, cheater-man. i hope they put something special in his doggie bag. i'll definitely go back to cubano's. most likely only with girlfriends or gay boyfriends though.

Delicious, home-cooked, and authentic. Love the garlic bread, mojitos, ropa vieja, mi tiera combo platter (a little bit of everything!), and corned beef hash. Good service, good for groups, nice patio.

I moved to the area recently and this is my new home away from home. Relaxed family environment with that air of professionalism you want from a place of business. I have been 4 or 5 times now and the staff has already remembered my name. My server/bartender Jose has always been friendly and accepting to my every request. Lee, one of the managers I assume, has treated me like an old family friend since I've been coming. I can't recommended this place highly enough. The food is to die for and don't get me started on the mojitos! They make the best ones in Maryland. And for a drink that any bartender will tell you is a pain to make, they will make it with a smile. If you have a bad time here it's because you were already in a bad mood and nothing this fine establishment could do was going to change that. Bring friends and tip heavy because this place has earned it.

Over-salted, poorly cooked, sad presentation. I ordered the Camarones a Pajila. A good size dish. It came without cilantro as I always ask. The first bite already gave me a good idea of how the whole dish was. The rice was also cold. Nobody could possibly eat that thing. I had to return it. The replacement came reasonably fast, but full of cilantro and with the same amount of salt. I've been to tons of authentic Cuban restaurants, specially in Miami and even in Europe (La Bodeguita del Medio) in Prague is one of the best. Cubano's is the worse and the most expensive.

Cubano's is my favorite restaurant in Silver Spring. The service is relaxed and the food is great. It's not haute cuisine, but that's not why you go to a place like this. It's comfort food at it's best. Sitting on the patio in the summer with friends is great way to spend an evening. The mojitos are the best around. The lechon assada is to die for, and the tres leches cake is the perfect ending (with a Cuban coffee chaser). Thank you Cubano's for keeping it real.

This was our first visit to cubanos. We chose it over mi rancho across the street which was definitely a good choice! The margaritas were good but a little weak for the price. I ordered the lechon asado, a pulled pork dish slow cooked in an orange based marinade. It was obvious that a lot of time went into cooking the pork as it was very tender but it seemed like they salted it after it was plated and the top layer of meat was way too salty. It was still good. The service was pretty good but when we didn't order dessert the waiter lost his "happy" attitude just because the check wasn't going to be 10 dollars higher. So, over all good food and not so good service.

I love Cuban food! And rum! Yay! I've been to Cubano's about three times, the pollo fricasse, paella (for 2!), and of course anything involving plantains are great! Service is very friendly, attentive, but slow. Mojitos and Sangria are greeeaaaattttt!! Meal also comes with a warm basket of toasted garlic bread, definitely a plus. Try it!
