Small restaurant, but it didn't feel crammed, even though most of the tables were taken when we got there. I got an order of California (I'm a sushi noob), and it was delicious and flavorful. My girlfriend got the Veggie combo which was several pieces of vegetarian sushi and 5 veggie rolls. I was afraid I was going to have to eat it all, because while she'll try new things (sometimes), she usually doesn't go for them. She really liked the sushi, but left the rolls for me. If you're not interested in sushi, they have a large menu of non-sushi items as well. The green tea is very smoky, so we didn't care for that, but everything else gets an A from us. I look forward to going back.

Love, love this place... The food is delish, I love that its not a chain restaurant... I had a birthday dinner there once in a private room, it was set up beautifully and you could control the music you listened to in the room :) Definitely a must!!!

Sushi De Kanpai is one of my favorite sushi bars in the area, and surprisingly, we have quite a few. While small, the restaurant is well decorated and the ambiance is quite nice. You have a choice of sitting at the sushi bar to watch your order being prepared, or sitting at a table. We usually get a table when we go, especially when we're there with a larger group. The menu is large and varied, with lots of choices for those in your group who may not be so fond of sushi. Their teriyaki is tasty and light, their dumplings flavorful, and their miso soup delicious. The sushi itself is the star, however. Their fish always tastes extremely fresh and they are careful to play up the natural flavors. They have many creative and interesting choices when it comes to rolls, and they always use real blue crab in their crab rolls. I especially recommend the Downtown Roll. My only complaint would be an overuse of cucumber, of which I'm not very fond. They will leave out the cucumber is you ask, though... assuming they remember. The service is usually very good, even if the waitresses aren't always well versed in the roll ingredients or that night's specials. At least they're personable and always willing to go get the answers to your questions.

Easily the best sushi on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The wait staff is excellent as well. Extensive sake menu, house made desserts and good menu options for those who don't want sushi.

we were pondering options on this side of maryland and the range went from hardees to $35 a plate dinners- we went through the hotels menu list and found this japanese option - read the online reviews and decided that this fit the bill. Situated on e.main st - on a very very quiet saturday - the restaurant was not crowded - but we sat at the sushi bar watched a master create his beautiful creations and ate our options as they were produced - their tempura was exceptional - the soft shell crab roll amazing - the dancing eel -delicate and tasty - yes we had a wonderful dinner - please try this place - a A HIDDEN GEM

Many people don't know this but the owners are Japanese farmers who happened to use all of their own specialty produce at sushi de konpai. The fresh vegetables and fresh fish equal an amazing combination. The staff is able to provide quality device in an intimate atmosphere. Plenty of delicious kitchen dishes are made daily by the owner. I highly recommend giving them a try!

The restaurant was located on a pretty and quaint street. Excellent and fresh sushi in a relaxing and kid-friendly decor...we enjoyed the sushi plate and the daily special 'Mystery roll'. The delicious mystery roll had buttery ruby spicy tuna, green jalapeño, etc. We liked this creative roll had no cream cheese or sugary mayonnaise sauce on top. The buckwheat noodle soup came with two shrimp tempuras and three vegetable tempuras. There was just just one coil of noodle. The broth was average. The size portion was too small and we will not re-order this soup. The service was friendly and prompt. The restrooms were clean and had a changing table. We parked for free on the street.

I was traveling for work and used the yelp App on my phone to find this restaurant and I agree 100% with the reviews. The fish was amazing the service was very good the atmosphere was very friendly. We stop at Sushi de Kanpai almost every time we drive to the shore. It's my first taste of leaving the city behind--laid back, friendly, and good value. I prefer to sit at the sushi bar to watch master sushi chef Katsumi practice his craft. As with any artist, he puts as much emphasis on presentation as on ingredients. The sushi is fresh, the fancy maki are inventive (though I'm more of a traditionalist), and the setting is unpretentious. Dining at Sushi de Kanpai is time well spent.

Absolutely amazing! By far the best sushi in town. We got the house special which will set you back $100 but is well worth it! Fresh, fresh, fresh! The place is tiny and everything is made to order so don't go if you are in a hurry.

If you have to choose between the supermarket sushi and this place definitely go with the supermarket offering. The service was atrocious - slow, inattentive, and just blatantly lazy. We walked into a half-empty restaurant 45 minutes before closing and were notified that they are very busy now and it will be at least 15 minutes before we get seated. I wish we just listened at that point and walked out. If the residents of Salisbury consider the sushi here worthy of five stars, as many reviews suggest, then I am afraid to think of what they would consider mediocre sushi. Perhaps just holding chopsticks provides so much excitement to the local townsfolk that they are already all agog for the "authenticity" of this place! The fish is stale, dry, smells like fish, and the sushi rolls are just miserable. The "Chef's Special" roll for 13 dollars was nothing more than a yellow tail and rice roll with gobs of mayo smeared all over it. I always wondered who uses those 5 gallon jugs of may in Costco. Now i know. This experience carries the dubious enjoyment of an ethnographic expedition into some third world shtihole. Think of it as eating cockroaches in Thailand or chicken intestines in Vietnam. Sushi De Kanpai, in most any other city, would be 4 stars. It wins an extra star for surviving and thriving among the dreariness that is downtown Salisbury. The sushi is very good-so much so that I can only cite one other establishment in the mid-Atlantic that I have enjoyed more. Their sake selection is outstanding. I was particularly surprised to note the variety on the menu. Granted, most American Japanese restaurants, while serving sushis, are not at all the dedicated sushi-yas of Japan. But Sushi De Kanpai offered such rareties as chowan mushi and okonomiyaki. You just don't see these dishes served in many American establishments-especially in Salisbury, MD!

Definitely the best sushi I've had in Salisbury and maybe the best restaurant in town. Everything seems very fresh and beautifully presented. The bento boxes offer a ton of food. It's a little slow, but effort goes into the preparation. Service is good. A little too expensive.

The very best food anywhere!!!! Can't believe I hadn't written a review yet. The kitchen food made by kumi is awesome!! The bento boxes are always great!! Last nights special was mahi mahi and ribeye steak and crab cake and seaweed salad. Her soups are always great especially the spicy scallop soup. The sushi chef katsumi is the best anywhere!!!! We love the tuna tostada appetizer its to die for!! The fish is the highest quality for sushi!! The rolls are especially good. Our favorites are west oc and danger. Also any roll on their special board is excellent. The bar has great cocktails made by Jet! Everything there is positive. Fresh sushi takes a while so have a drink and don't be in a hurry. Love their food and atmosphere!

This is the best japanese restaurant in salisbury for food, the service is hit or miss. Seems like recently they have turned to more of a diner wait staff, it used to be fantastic. Food does take longer to make but it is understandable considering everything is made to order and fresh. This is the only raw fish I will go near, it is fresh, not fishy and palatable. The rolls are creative and even the kitchen food tastes amazing, you can tell they use authentic and fresh ingredients. The restaurant even caters to the less adventurous with multiple american "Japanese" dishes. The prices are a bit high but im guessing it is because of the ingredients they are using, like fresh high grade fish, japanese mayo (tastes better then american), great tasting seafood and organic japanese vegetables and seasonings. You can even taste a different in the seaweed and spicy mayo that is used for the sushi, it is a much better quality then other places I've been. This is definitely worth a try if you are into great food.

This is a nice sushi place for the Salisbury area. The decor is nice mix of modern and traditional, with a general clean look and feel. Located on the historic downtown plaza, it gives the restaurant a quiet and intimate feeling - not like eating in a strip-mall. There's a public parking lot less than one block away, and lots of street parking in the evening after work hours. The restauant seems to seat about 50 people, 70 at most - so it's small and comfortable, but not cramp. The menu is made of the pretty standard rolls, nigiri, and sashimi, with a few "house rolls" on special. The sushi plates and meals ranged from about $18 - $55 per person, along with an a-la-carte ordering system for rolls and nigiri. For my wife and me, our total bill came to about $75 before tip (which included one glass of wine and one beer). Oh, that reminds me - they have Kirin beer (no Sapporo as of my last visit) and a small selection of white and red wines. The sushi came out fast; but we were the only people in the restaurant. The sushi is presented a little "prettier" than other local sushi places, and the taste was defintely above average. I went a-la-carte with orders of the standard nigiri (salmon, yellow tail, red snapper, eel, tuna, etc...) along with two house-rolls (eel and tropical). The nigiri was fresh, good texture, well cut and nicely garnished. The rolls were pretty good... but nothing exceptional or notable about the rolls. My wife had a sushi platter which consisted of a mix of nigiri and some rolls, along with a salmon roe sushi. She was very satisfied with her meal. Over all... I'd definitely come back, but it's a little pricey for me to go on a regular basis, so I'll get my regular sushi fix elsewhere, and come back here when I'm feeling more special.

I normally avoid influencing a restaurant's rating with service, but this place was hands down one of the slowest places I've everrr been to. And this includes hustle and bustle, understaffed joints in Frisco, NYC & Miami. I've tried Kanpai thrice now, so it's not a fly-by judgement. Back to the food, though. The sushi could have made up for the wait in time (which btw was 2 hours to those who think I'm exaggerating) but alas. It didn't. I feel unkind even as I type this, but it just did not live up to the hype of fellow Yelpers. Really, 5 stars are handed out too freely... Portions were child sized. Fish was mediocre, really average at best -maybe it's an eastern shore thing? & although our waitress was kind, service is a collaborative effort. It was inattentive & understaffed (1 sushi chef, a negligent hostess, and 2 waitresses for a packed house). You could see our waitress was even flustered with the wait in food coming out. I can comment positively on the location- very quaint side of downtown in a historic building. But that's about it. If a friends suggests this place again, I'll oblige and hopefully I can update with a better experience. But until than, I'm avoiding this place.

This is by far my favorite restaurant!!! The food is absolutely delicious and you can taste the freshness of the food. My favorite appetizer is the spring rolls and my husband loves the Okonomiyaki. For dinner we both usually get the teriyaki chicken and it is to die for!! The Teriyaki sauce is something I have never had before and usually end up getting extra because it is so good. For dessert we usually get the mochi ice cream. Anytime my Husband lets me pick the restaurant we are going to, i always choose here :) Our 7 year old daughter also loves coming here so i find it kid friendly as well.

Had dinner with a friend on a Saturday night - made a reservation which probably wasn't necessary as they weren't full. Had a nice cozy table in the corner looking out into the plaza and a very friendly server. Their wine list is good and the food was very good! I had the NY Strip bento box which was the special and it was very good and a lot of food! They put real crab meat on the seaweed salad and the shrimp shu mai was tender and had just enough sauce. My date had a selection of sushi and it was all fresh and tasted good. I will definitley come back to this restaurant! With two glasses of wine, two saki's, an edamame app, and our meals the bill was $90 before tip which is reasonable for a good meal.

One of the best restaurants in Salisbury and by far the best sushi in town. Great for dates or groups. Yum!
Kanpai used to be one of my favorite sushi spots in Salisbury. Although the service took occasionally longer than some others in town and the rolls were smaller the food was overall pretty good. However, the one thing i could not go without was their "Crunch roll" served with a mango sauce. To my dismay my pass two visits I was told they did not have it. So on my latest sushi trip i called to check their hours and also to inquire about the availability of my beloved crunch roll. On a positive they were open but i was informed that they would no longer have this roll. I know between myself and my friends we consumed enough to make it worth keeping. Unfortunately this is kinda a deal breaker... i went to ikebana instead.

This is a really cute sushi place in Downtown Salisbury. That alone creates a quaint ambiance that can't be recreated in the newer and more sterile areas of town. Inside, the decor is very nice but quite simple. The restaurant is small, but didn't feel cramped to me... but then again I ate fairly late after peak dinner hours. The food here was really good. We got some edamame which weren't overly salty like at some places as an appetizer. For our entrees, I got a selection of sushi and an angelkiss roll and my boyfriend got a sampling of sashimi. We were both very happy with the freshness and quality of the fish we got, and my boyfriend's sashimi was especially nicely presented. My angelkiss roll was truly a work of art. The service was attentive without being overbearing. I really enjoyed my experience here, but would have liked to see a larger variety of fish offerings on the sushi and sashimi menu like they have at Ikebana.

Awesome place. We came from Baltimore and it's worth it. The seafood is fresh and the sushi is amazing, creative. The area around is kinda of down but you can't miss the great restaurant.

One of the best restaurants in Salisbury and by far the best sushi in town. Great for dates or groups. Yum!

This place is awesome! The sushi is always fresh and perfect. I went here with a lunch date, and good times were had by all; despite spending most of my time teaching my dining counterpart how to use chopsticks! Regardless of this minor character flaw, the restaurant provided an excellent setting for all that "get to know ya" conversation. The décor is the perfect mix of American and Japanese. There is plenty of room to have table conversation, and not feel right on top of each other. Staff is friendly and attentive. The master sushi chef creates a masterpiece with every single play the makes. The rolls are so good you almost don't realize exactly how much eating at the time. One of the major downsides of this restaurant is that it's in downtown Salisbury. I'm not entirely sure how comfortable I would be strolling around that neighborhood after the sun goes down. However, if you're looking for a sushi lunch this would definitely be the place to check out. I look forward to trying this place again in the near future; keep up the good work!

We ordered the Kanpai house dinner every time and love it! Their sashimi is very fresh. The service is nice. I'm willing to drive 3.5 hrs to here from Baltimore every weekend!

I thought service was great, food was outstanding.only reason I give it 4 stars is because of only eating there once. Had the Tuna tostada for app , dragon roll, angel roll... Was excellent!
